Toshiba trashed by teen

Q: Toshiba trashed by teen

Toshiba 1.8Ghz laptop
4 GB RAM (recent upgrade to memory 2x1GB, machine only sees 3GB, I can't find the cause, any advice most welcome)
160 GB HDD
Windows XP Media Center sp3

I recently 'cleaned' this computer and upgraded the memory. I left it with Eset running and it seemed fine until a 14 yr old nephew spent one session on it. When I heard about it, the browser was hanging without connecting. System control soon degraded to the point where Windows loads but that is it. Task mgr, file explorer, start button, browser... nothing works. Disk activity is evident but 'it' will not release the machine even after sitting off the ethernet wire for a substantial time after loading the OS. Safe mode available but 'it' blocks the run of Malwarebytes (though the app will load into memory). The only scans I could run were from within safe mode. not sure how useful that may be but RSIT outputs attached. I have DDS scan from safe mode I will place under separate post.

Best advice about next step please. Thank you for taking this under advisement.

Preferred Solution: Toshiba trashed by teen

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

i am posting on behalf of a friend who, unfortunately, due to being to occupied with family concerns, is unable to log on and post for herself. therefore, i am trying to find out whatever i can for her. her problem (or at least the most bothersome thereof) is being constantly & frequently bombarded by pop-ups & redirects apparently associated with http://teen-biz.com

she has already downloaded, installed and regularly updated and run spybot, adaware as well as hijack this. unfortunately she is still being tormented by having her children be subjected to the extremely profane visual & text attacks that teen-biz seems to feel compelled to launch at every opportunity. as you can see from the following hijack log, teen-biz was found:

I have an almost 13 year old granddaughter that is very good with logic puzzles and loves the computer and stated an interest in learning how to program games.
While I know my way around the PC, I've never done much in the line of programming. I am considering on buying her for Christmas a beginners guide to C++. My thinking is if she's going to learn she might as well gain some real life experience she can use as opposed to getting her a book on basic or something like that.
My question is two fold to you programmers. Is C++ going to be too difficult for a kid her age? And secondly any other recommendations for a simple C++ book or other suggestions if I'm not on the right path thinking about C++. I did find the MS visual C++ compiler that I downloaded for her and a beginners video from the MS website to supplement the book.
Any help will really be a appreciated.

Hello, folks.
My teen can't get enough of MySpace, YouTube and associated activities. The more she uses them, the more I have to keep cleaning out Virtumonde, Smitfraude, etc. malware that keep repeatingly placed on my PC. I'm tired of the junk! How can she keep using her favorite sites without junking up the PC with malware? I am running Win XP, antivirus is Panda Internet Security (which I love 10x better than Norton or McAfee) plus I also clean out with Spybot often (probably need to do this more often). What guidelines can I give my teen to help prevent malware? She also IM's a lot, and I'm gonna tell her about not clicking on IM links.

A:Keep Getting Reinfected When My Teen Uses Myspace

Do you use the Firefox browser? That will definitely help. You're more likely to get infected on myspace using Internet Explorer.

Spybot is pretty ineffective these days. It was decent several years ago, but now I'd recommend Malwarebytes or SuperAntiSpyware.

It's actually over his budget... until his next paycheck, at which point it'll wipe out his savings account.
So before he blows everything he's earned this summer taking orders at a fast-food joint, thought I'd ask if this will be a great choice. It's a Lenovo Y50 laptop sold on Amazon. He looked at it in a Best Buy store where it costs nearly a hundred dollars more. He's a junior in high school this year, so use will be for any school related study/research rolleyes, facebook, Minecraft and he wants to get Skyrim/Elder Scrolls downloaded once he makes his purchase. I think the salesman said that this could be linked to his PS4 - I'm not a techie at all so I don't know that this is hugely important but my son seemed impressed.

I've read reviews dissing the screen. But we saw it in store and didn't think it looked as... unpleasant as some reviewers thought. The other negative thing I've read is something about having to press two keys on the keyboard to control the sound. Again, I don't think that that sounds like a big deal either.

I guess I'm wondering if there's something better for his money or is this actually dang good for $1250 plus tax from Best Buy? (I know Amazon's price is cheaper but hesitate to have to handle any troubles we ... Read more

Hello,
I hope you can help me.
My daughter is experiencing problems with her Windows ME machine. I've cleaned off what I could with Spybot and Adaware. I've also run Norton 2002 and the Micro trend on-line virus scan (although I'm not confident that the on-line scan made it to completion).

I'm seeing alot of modem activity, even when nothing else is running on her PC. She's getting icons on her desktop, pop-ups and spyware. Her machine is running very slowly and locks up on a regular basis.

I've run hijackthis and Hijackthis analyzer. The analyzer log is posted below:
Thanks in advance.

Hi:
Not even sure if this is the right place. My pre-teen cousin installed WINAMP on my mother's computer.
1. Is this a legal program? Is it any good? Does it cost anything monthly?

2. Now The sound on her computer doesn't work. I get an error message from NullSoft. "bad direct sound driver. PLEASE INSTALL Proper drivers OR SELECT another device in configuration." Error Code 887800A

Anything yu can tell me about this or how to fix will be deeply appreciated.

Thanks. wildbill

Hello. I am new here but have been following these forums for a couple of weeks. I think the people [??] who create viruses should be treated like any other terrorist.

I have AVG and today when I opened my e-mail, I noticed a message labeled "Teen poll results" above a couple of other entries. So I used Shift and selected all three so I could delete them all at once. However Delete didn't work.

The AVG [Griswold] screen popped up and said it detected a virus. So I pressed "n" and even enter. Meanwhile, behind the AVG box, there was another box showing a file being downloaded. So I quickly clicked the Close X button for Outlook Express. I hope that cut it off at the pass.

So I have some questions:

1) Is there some way to select and delete something from my inbox without it starting to download?

2) Why didn't AVG stop this thing from down loading?

3) Assuming part of the virus downloaded, how do I find it and get rid of it?

That's enough for now. You guys are great.

I have a couple of older Dell laptops here of the Windows 98 vintage. They have more than ample hard disks and 64 megs of RAM. I'm thinking of turning them into NetBooks for a couple of 10- and 12-year-olds. The laptops both have good batteries USB ports and PCMCIA slots so wireless will be an easy task.

Here's the question: How practical a job is this and what OS would be best?

I know just a very little about NetBooks, mostly what I've learned by looking at them on the store shelves.

Hi

I am a dad who wants to give his rebellious pre-teen daughter some control on her laptop, like update iTunes or install games, but she cannot do such as a Standard User.

I initially setup her laptop with both of us (dad and daughter) as admin users. I wanted to be an admin user to help install updates, backup, and check for viruses, etc... Dad as "Home IT guy".

However, in her rebellious attitude over the last couple of months, she removed me as an admin; so, I had no way for login. Pissed IT dad.

IT dad took her laptop away for a week, demanded her password, created IT dad as admin and changed frustrated daughter into standard user.

All fine. No. Daughter wants to upgrade iTunes (admin login required), install games (admin login required), etc... (admin login required). Non-IT mom does not want to do IT stuff (i.e. "admin login required" stuff).

Is there a way to allow my daughter (degraded to Standard User) to have some admin privileges (to perform upgrades and downloads without "admin login required"), but without having the permissions from removing other administrators (i.e. IT dad)?

In other words, IT parents as Uber-Administrators and User children as Limited-Adminstrators (i.e., cannot remove a Uber-Adminstrator but can upgrade and download software)?

IT Dad wants to know, thx

A:Windows 7 Pro: Parent adminstration control and rebellious pre-teen

Sorry, I dont have an answer for you, but I'm in exactly the same boat. because I have three sons that install programs and updates like your daughter, that required me to intervene on a multiple-times-per-days basis I gave my kids administrative accounts on their own computers.

BIG MISTAKE!!

I use OpenDNS to prevent access to undesirable web stuff, and so I can have some semblence of knowledge of what is going on. But they hack, and they crack and they circumvent every bit of security I add.

Now I am considering setting them to standard users. And that means non-stop whining, negatively charged atmosphere, and daily interventions by me to install, update, remove and configure things on their PCs.

I feel for you. I hope someone here will be able to offer some guidance to us frustrated parents.

I'm hoping someone out there can help because I am at a loss. It happened on the 19th. My PC froze up and nothing would respond. I had to power off and when I restarted it, I have no network. No adapters, no connections, nothing. Rebooted and tried again. No change. Tweaked some setting here and there, still nothing. Finally broke down and did a system restore, this did not help. I have looked through similar posts trying to find a solution, and missing icons seem to be a big problem, but the difference is that I am not able to connect to the internet. It is not just my icons that are missing but my whole network infrastructure it seems.

In Device Manager, there are no adapters being listed at all. When I click on show hidden, I am shown a bunch a bunch of WAN miniports but not my network adapter (Realtek RTL8139/810x Ethernet NIC) or my firewire adapter. I have tried re-installing the adapters and I receive a code 10. I downloaded new drivers from Realtek's website and installed those... it did not help. I cannot remove my network adapter because it is attached to the motherboard or I would have tried that. I ran "netsh int ip reset" and rebooted but this did not fix the problem either. I installed the "support tools" from the my XP disks and ran netdiag.exe and I get the following log:

"Failed to get information for a network adapter. The error occured was: The pipe is being closed. (232)[FATAL] Cannot find TCP/IP configuration from the ... Read more

Well, for starters, did you install the CPU Heatsink/Fan along with the CPU? This is mandatory. A fresh application of thermal grease for each removal of the HSF would also be great.

You have not specified any details about installing the HSF with the CPU, so most likely it is heat. If you have installed the HSF unit, make sure it is mounted correctly and applying full pressure and contact with the surface of the CPU.

Keep us posted..

A while back my room mate was using my PC and said it started acting funny. Of course I went and was checking it out and of course it had gotten a virus.

I am running stopzilla and was using malwarbytes but neither of them seem to be helping my situation. Stopzilla removed several hundred instances of viruses, but there must be still something in the background running because every time I plug the network connection back in it slows down to the speed of stupid. I tried loading system restore but it just comes up and says system restore cannot protect your computer. Now I don't know what to do but format and I really don't want to do that unless completely necessary. I do have an external hardrive and can back up stuff to that but I am afraid that the virus might latch on to that as well so would rather not.

After reading a few posts I downloaded hijack this and ran a scan for people to see. Maybe someone can help.

I have a Compaq Presario (it's an older one) and the cd-rom was not opening. I tried to insert a pin into the manual open override, but it did not work this time. So I then took a screw driver, while the pin was still inserted, and then... well, to make a long story short, I broke the cd rom drawer, and it will neither open nor close. In fact, I had to force it shut. Can I replace the the cd rom component? Is it easy? How much will it cost?

A:Solved: CD ROM is trashed...

If its a desktop, then its easy and cheap. You need a Parallel ATA(PATA or IDE) type drive, CD or DVD.

To replace it you open the case, screws or clip on the back and access the cables for the drive. Depending on the case you may have remove part of the front or the whole front to remove the drive. Check the HP site for your specific Compaq model and they sometimes have a guide.

I have tried to load explore.exe, but I get an error message that states, can not find. I browse to the windows folder and find it there, but it will not launch there either.

I was able to manually install Norton 2009 and it did remove some viruses, trojens and backdoors.

They are as follows:

trojan.srizbi
backdoor.trojan
trojan.dropper

trojan.dropper
backdoor.trojan
trojan.blusod

Backdoor and trojan.dropper was listed twice, but norton found it twice and removed it twice. At least so it states.

I upgraded from windows 7 a few months ago to windows 8. All was going great and I was happy with it. Having a desktop like before for the wife and a new windows one for me. Anyway I went on to download 8.1. This ran ok but took almost 5 hours to download and set up even on my broadband running at 14 Mbs. Anyway all was doing ok until the last group of updates from Microsoft. I could not use IE and other programs in the computer just would not load. I could get onto my home page but that was it. No links would work, my email could not be got at. I uninstalled the updates and still the computer was not right. In the end I used system restore to a date before updates and that went well making the computer usable again. That was till them updates got back in. In the end I have had to use the system disc and clean out the computer and put windows 8 back in totally. I have now knocked the automatic updates on the head opting for them to be downloaded but not installed till I make sure that 8.1 is not in there. I cannot go back to windows 7 which I would like to after all this messing about. Windows 8 is good but that's where is will stop at praising it.

A:8.1 trashed system

I agree with you I also wish today I had never installed Win8 and today really wish had not done the 8.1 IMHO degrade of the already flawed windows operating system. Right off with Win8 from Win7 my year old programs like Roxie Video Pro. could not be installed, also my Sony programs could not be installed. But some really old programs installed with WinXD they could be installed. Now with Win8.1 WiFi router a brand new Netgear Night Hawk has to be reconnected each time system is started. Also all other Win7 systems I have will connect to my new Canon G16 WiFi camera, Win8.1 won't connect does not find my camera. So Microsoft again like many past failed operating systems, you have failed your system users.

Hi, I would really appreciate a little help with what has turned into a major problem.

I am running Windows 2000, with spybot, adaware, mcafee, zonealarm - and made the big mistake of installing Kazaa (don't ask me why).

Then I made the even bigger mistake of running spybot and adaware after having used Kazaa, they found almost 100 files, folders and registry keys that would have been classed as scumware, and I removed them.

The next time I tried to open Kazaa, of course it wouldn't work. So I tried to uninstall Kazaa - wouldn't uninstall because it was missing some file (coincidentally). So I tried to “un-quarantine” all the scumware files on my machine in order to be able to uninstall Kazaa before scanning again….

The machine subsequently crashed and now will not boot up at all. Even in safe mode it will not work. I have run a windows repair but it hasn’t made any difference.

Please advise. Thanks.

Hey people, just a little hint in case this hasn't been posted here before...
Last week one of our developers installed a defunctified version of their software onto his machine which completely trashed it.
There was NO way to get into it...booting from a DOS diskette was useless because all of his partitions were NTFS.
I thought of installing NT on one of his partitions, but that would involve formatting a partition, all of which had critical info.
Then BOOM, I remembered how Win2000 installs without automatically formatting anything, so I installed w2k, transferred all his data to another machine, then wiped his computer out and reinstalled his workstation, as if nothing ever happened...well except for me working on a saturday, grrr.
Peace.

A:Salvaging data from trashed NT

Greetings

Good for you. Now let me tell you of an easier way: Download NTFSdos from www.sysinternals.com

It is an NTFS driver for DOS. Let's you mount NTFS drives in DOS 6.22 and lets you read from them (the full version that you have to pay for, allows you to read AND write to NTFS drives). So, what you could have done was put in your favourite bootdisk (or download mine from www.xperts.co.za/reuel/multiboot - it comes with NTFSdos) and save your data through good old DOS.

Also, NT4 does not need to format a HD when it installs.

Cheers

Hi - This might be slightly off topic - but this is where I came to read about how to fix my original problem based on others people's logs - but I have an after affect problem I cant fix.So - I had some sort of malware infection that caused some files/processes to spawn "17PHolmes.exe" and "mruni922.exe" crap. After reading a bunch here, and based on other people's HJT logs I ran that, and having no luck with my virus scanner or adaware - I ran Combofix. That solved the problem but seemingly created another side effect. I run Shareaza, and it will no seem to connect to any ports any more. I am behind a NAT router, and I have port forwarding set up. I have a w PC's. When I aim the port forward at that one, Shareaza responds fine and I can run the online port tester and scanners and they all are normal. When I aim my port forward at the formerly infected machine, it sees nothing. Scanners dont see it, and the Shareaza firewall/router test fails. If I go into the command prompt and do a "netstat -ano" it does indicate that the 6346 port is open under TCP and UDP and listening. Shareaza thinks it's firewalled though, and the outrside world in does as well. Because my other PC works fine, I think it's just this machine's config somehow. I've uninstalled Shareaza and reinstalled; I've reset the router and re-set up forwarded ports etc. Always the same results... is there something in here that is killing my ports? PS- net access works fi... Read more

A:Combofix Trashed My Ports?

One more tidbit of info: I'm alomost certain it's some windows network related file or process. I ran ethereal/wireshark - and I see that UDP packets on 6346 or coming and going - which probably explains why Shareaza can at least "connect". But, it wont respond on TCP packets on that port - they come in - but it said there was no destination port for them. And I see the TCP port assigned in netstat -ano, so there has to b e some middle layer in there misconfigured or gone, I just dont know what it is.

When I started up my Vista computer today, after I ran a bootup defrag (Diskeeper 2008, if it helps any), I couldn't boot into either my Vista Home Premium or my Wubi 8.10 Kubuntu install on the same partition. When I tried to use the recovery disk that came with my laptop, it said it would fix the problem, but it hasn't. In fact, when I ran chkdsk /R it would come up with an "Unspecified Error: as soon as either stage 2 or stage 3 ended, I can't remember which. When I forced a mount on my old Ubuntu 8.04 disk. It wouldn't show not even half the files but the free space matches up with the amount I had before that stupid defragmentation run. I think the MFT was trashed, but the files are still in there somewhere. Is there any way to recover the files? I would restore from backup, but ironically I was going to get me a bunch of DVD's to start backing up my computer! System restore has nothing to restore to so now I'm screwed! Is their any hope for the files I had on my hard drive? (Probably about 1000+ aren't showing up!) And is there a way for me retrieve the file stucture as well?

I recently downloaded a keygen that turned into a malicious exe file. I managed to kill it quickly, but not before it disabled some of the options on my machine. I edited my registry and managed to get the Task Manager working again, however I still can't change my wallpaper and the windows on my desktop stick.

I've tried reg repair programs and they haven't solved the problem for me. I still have the exe handy if anyone would like to take a look at it to maybe see what damage it caused.

thanks!

I was playing around when I shouldn't have been, I downloaded and installed Windows 7 Manager v2.1.7. After about 15 minutes I decided to delete it. I rebooted the system after the uninstall. Now my Desktop icons have an additional box overlayed on the highlighted icon (see attachment). When I could not find any other solution, I elected to do a System Restore. Unfortunately, none of the Restore Points prior to the installation of Windows 7 Manager will restore. Any suggestion on correcting the icons?

PS. I have already tried deleting the icon cache and cleaning the Thumbnails...

My computer was having problems so I reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled windows xp. It worked great for about a week. Then all of a sudden, I had to boot from a disk. When I clicked on "My computer", my C Drive was:

[email protected]:/

(there were a lot of squares and things I don't have on my keyboard) But this is just an example.

What happened? Is there any hope for my old friend? BTW it was a Hewlitt Packard Pavillion.

That doesn't sound good. You might try putting the HD in another computer to be sure, but it looks like you are going to need a new one.

Hey guys! So I've been trying to fix this problem for days. As soon as I updated to Win8.1, I started having problems. (Literally as soon as, I was using Skype/Mumble right before update, it was fine. Everything broke after the update, and it's happened to multiple people.) I've seen these same questions asked on Microsoft forums, usually inconclusive or unhelpful. I have an HP Envy m6-1105dx. No other major changes within the last few months. My computer detects the microphone, it is both enabled and the default device. It is visible in the "Recording Devices" tab, and I have tried opening properties and restoring everything to default. I opened the "Levels" tab of the microphone, and it is at 100 Volume, and +10.0. It is not muted. Fixes I have tried:

Uninstalling and reinstalling drivers. This fixed my Sound problems, and my speakers are working. When I try to do this for my microphone/webcam, there are no compatible drivers for Windows 8 for "Internal Mic (IDT High Definition Audio CODEC)". There are Win7 Drivers, but I have tried installing them. . . I receive an error message saying there is no compatible hardware on this PC.

Checking all sound levels, restoring mics to default settings, updating drivers/repairing drivers, checking wire connections, and multiple other fixes. I have ran audio wizard to check for problems, and none are detected. Scanned for hardware changes, nothing happened. I have also gone to device manage... Read more

I am trying to reformat the HD on my old computer (Acer Aspire, pentium 75 MGh, 1 GB HD, 32 Ram, CDRom, 1.44 FD, External ZipDrive 100) so that I can reinstall Win98 on it.

It has Free DOS and Win98 on it. The HD is compressed With Drivespace3 to about 2 GB. Windows is down (See my VKD error posting) And won't reinstall. Free Dos is Missing important components like the fdisk utility.

Can anyone help me sort this mess out?

A:Trashed Hard Drive

According to freedos.org, fdisk is included. Scan this site and see what's there to help you.
