Windows Update broke MMC (ATI driver?)

Q: Windows Update broke MMC (ATI driver?)

I fired up 7 today to be met with no sound. So I tried going into device mangaer. It wouldn't open and gave me a 'failed to create a temporary' something or other. It was a MMC error which goes back to at least Win2K.

I couldn't close several windows, access device mangaer etc, so not being in the mood to try and fix it, I opted for a restore point. I noticed that the most recent restoe point had a Windows Update Installed beside it (I had forgotten to turn off automatic updating )

I selected the next restore point where I knew everything was working and everytings back to normal.

I checked the Updates available and there was one for my Dell Monitor and one for an ATI pre-release driver. I just installed the Dell update and it seems fine. I'm not going to try the ATi driver as i prefer to get drivers from the source and not WU.

Anyone else (especially with ATI cards) have any WU troubles?

Preferred Solution: Windows Update broke MMC (ATI driver?)

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

None here, You can always uninstall the update if it causes problems...Microsft only released a patch for a serious CIFS flaw for windows 7 thats the only update available minus drivers

So i'm looking to get some help/advice. I had a recent upgrade to my windows 10 and for some reason the sound coming out of my speakers now sounds like it's coming from the other side of a long hallway. I can fix this by going into device manager and downgrading my current audio driver but windows seems to keep updating it to the new one which sounds terrible. I can downgrade it, restart my computer and be listening to music when suddenly the sound changes. Any suggestions on preventing windows form updating to the newer driver? Or is there a new driver that fixes this? Any help would be appreciated

My lab uses Active Directory SmartCard login, which is something that I set up with the help of the fine folks here.  It's worked alright, sans a relatively minor issue.

This last patch cycle, however, I discovered a major issue.  I saw an optional update called out as ActivIdentity Mini Driver (Giescke & Devrient SmartCafe Expert 114K DI v3.2).  I knew this had something to do with SmartCards, so I thought
to give it a trial on a single test machine to see if it resolved said relatively minor issue (subject for another time).
Anyways, to make a long story short, after installing this update, I find that my trial workstation will actually pull a different UPN than any machine that does not have it installed.
Typically said UPN is just a string of numbers @ our suffix.  Without the update, it's 16 digits.  After this new component is installed, the last 6 are removed.  You can see how this would cause issue - on the trial WS, I'm effectively a
different user as far as Active Directory is concerned!
Machines that I did not put this "SmartCafe" on are not impacted.  I log in just fine.  And, to my recollection, this "Optional Update" wasn't even available as something TO install at all on most of the machines in our group
(I'm still doing a one by one manual while we stand up a WSUS).
Normally if a Windows Update goes awry, you either go to "View Installed Updates", find it, and Uninst... Read more

Ladies & Gents

Recently I began to update some machines that have not been updated since 2007. They are on winxp pro sp2. At the start I did not know that the win 03 server had the ability to push updates to the clients. So I forced the first one to use the regular windows update site and brought it fully up to date with sp3. All seamed fine.

A few days later it was reported to me that they could not print to one of the printers anymore. So at my next visit I attempted to fix this printer issue. The printer is shared from another client and works just fine. It shows up in the win 03 server, and I can print a test page from it and to it.

When I try to add a printer on the client I get an error message '....unable to add the printer connection, the specified printer has lost its connection to the server.'

This post seem to indicate that the problem may be sp3

Any other thoughts?

Most of what google yields is quite dated. One post even has a big log registry hack to follow. I don't really want to go there.

This is the first time I have ever used win 03 server, so.... I am acquainted with 3.0, 95, 98, me, xp and vista. Now I use Debian Linux on every thing.

Thanks in advance

Since I know the correct link ... I can use FF to update,
But, IE 8 will not let even me paste in the correct link.

CURSE YOU MICROSOFT! few hours ago my xps 8900 is working fine then wife called me for dinner and I decided to turn off my PC. It asked me if I want to install the update and shutdown or restart. I choose shutdown. after eating dinner I went back and booted up the machine and asked me for my password. While I was typing I noticed that I was not connected to my network anymore but I still proceeded logging in. After I press enter it just hanged on the looping circle and I was cursing after that. Can't even do control, alt+ del. I have to turn off the PSU. Did the same thing more than 10 times same result. I was ready to hurt somebody.
Good thing I have a backup laptop that has the exact programs and setup as the xps 8900 and good thing my data files are in a network external drive. So I went looking at the web and saw tons of people having problems after the windows update. The dell recovery drive I made does not even want to work and I know it works before as I already did a full recovery with the USB when I did a SSD upgrade. Now I am forced to use a stock windows 10 recovery disk I have to reinstall the OS......this just stinks......so to all of you out there DO NOT UPDATE WINDOW 10 OR GO BACK TO WINDOWS 7! which I am thinking of doing. Good thing Bill Gates is not my neighbor or else I will <deleted> because of this mess.

Windows keeps thinking the printer has gone offline. When I run the troubleshooter, it says the problem is that the printer is "off". It says to turn on the printer. I do nothing to the printer and just hit "next" and the printer starts working again.

Until later, then it does it again. Have rebooted both computer and printer and still has the same issue.

ok, reasonably new vaio laptop, was working fine, but it was asking constantly if it could install some updates. the popup would say it was rebooting in 5 mins, and it would let you cancel it. eventually, my sister wasn't there to click no, and it rebooted and ran some updates, but it hung during the install of these updates. after which it will not boot past "welcome", even in safe mode.

i'd love it if someone can help me, i have a seriously busy schedule, and this laptop has become quite a problem.

i can't help but be furious, i even tried to get help from microsoft, and they say it's not their problem, and they just say to reinstall. they don't seem even the slightest bit sorry that their forced update broke this laptop.

Have you tried a plain reinstall. Uninstall from Control Panel, then delete any remneants in Program Files if there are any. Then either download an old version like 11 or 10 from a non-Microsoft site OR just re-download 12. May work.. If not I suggest a new media player like iTunes, WinDVD or VLC.

Hi there.

Back on the 9th I installed the Windows 8.1 Update 1 for my laptop (HP Envy m6-1206TX), which - to the best of my understanding - has broken my computer. Neither my computer nor WhoCrashed seems to think there's a problem, so I don't have anything better than a description for this.

After the initial mandatory restart and every restart since then, I am able to log in normally. However, within a few minutes my taskbar and desktop will both freeze and then disappear. Any windows that are open will cycle between which is the active window making them almost but not entirely unusable, and the screen will flash. After a couple of minutes of this, the flashing will increase in speed and the computer will rapidly cycle between desktop mode and the start screen. At this point the computer is completely unusable, and even "control+alt+delete -> Task Manager" is useless due to the way in which the computer quickly jumps between the start screen and desktop.
The only way to deal with the problem is to force-shut down the computer and, upon booting it again, immediately go to the task manager and terminate the Windows Explorer process, which leaves me without a start screen, windows commands, a desktop, or any of charms and other windows features.

Thus-far I've been in an online chat with the Windows 8 service team, only to find that I am ineligible for free support due to my computer being two months out of warranty and having been a Windows 8 native install ra... Read more

Hello,Let me start off and say that I own a Lenovo T410, T420, T430, T480 and several other machines, and I am very familiar with these devices, and my primary operating systems are Windows 7 and OpenSUSE linux OS. As required by my employer, I bought a new laptop, Lenovo T480 which came with W10Pro (cannot downgrade) and installed an OpenSUSE KDE. In the beginning the T480 on W10 worked smoothly, but after one of the automatic updates, my sound system isn't working properly anymore. Before the update, I could have a dual channel sound output meaning, on W7 I could use "Realtek Audio Manager" to choose that I will have different volume setting for: 1. Machine speakers.2. Headphones if/when plugged in. This would prevent my laptop for blasting sound to the room through the speakers if I accidentally unplugged the headphone. This is a crucial feature to me as I am often connected to a meeting and I sometimes like to listen to music while working. This feature is gone. I have it working on the linux side, it is definitely driver/OS problem, not hardware. First, Lenovo T480 +W10 never came with realtek audio manager support.Second, I cannot download it seperately, and I somewhat get a buggy "resolution" if I downgrade where the mute button sticks. I am wondering if someone was able to solve this.Thank you for your time.-SJLPHI

For anyone using the parallel port on their computer for a printer or other device like a lot of restaurants use the printer option, the driver has been broken on the 1511 update.

Enable Legacy PNP devices in the port properties in device manager.

disable and reable the port in device manager

create a log on script that disables and enables the port using devcon.exe from Windows Driver Kit.

The workaround lasts as long as you dont reboot, if you do the workaround has to be re-applied.

I certainly wished I had been aware of this before upgrading my father's computer to Windows 10. The upgrade implements the 1511 update now, so it has this problem. I had assumed it was a problem with the drivers for the printer. instead.

Anyway, if you want to reset the LPT port using the Device Manager each time you boot your computer, probably the easiest way to do it is to go to the "Resources" tab for the LPT port in the Device Manager and un-check, then check (or visa-versa) the "Use automatic settings" toggle, then click "OK". To make it easier on my father, I implemented the script provided by DAC324 in the page banger linked to in the previous post. In my case, the script was as follows:

@echo offcd /d %~dp0
devcon disable *PNP0400
timeout /t 1 > nul
devcon enable *PNP0400

I obtained devcon.exe by downloading and installing the Windows 10 Driver Kit (WDK). The file was saved in one of the subfolders of the "tools" folder. As DAC324 suggested, I scheduled the script to run upon Windows login. It seems to work so far.

Last Saturday, 19 July, Win Update was installing new updates and prompted me to reboot. I let it reboot and instead of starting back up as usual, it crashed and gave me the following error message:

Stop c000021a [fatal system error} the windows logon process system terminates unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system has been shut down.

I get this error whenever I boot up unless I hit f8 during start up and run in Safe Mode. I have been running in Safe Mode w/ Networking for a week now. I have been searching for a possible remedy since it happened.

Things I have tried:
Tried booting to last stable configuration- no difference
Tried restoring to last system checkpoint- no difference
Looked in Add/Remove programs for updates dated 19 July, found none more recent than 9 July
Looked in Registry H_Hey/local machine/software/microsoft/updates for same, found same
Running Chkdsk on C: from My Computer gave me no errors

I routinely have both Windows Defender and AVG anti virus running, so I doubt my issue could be malware related.

I have sent repeated emails to microsoft support regarding this problem, since they offer free assistance for update related issues. So far their help has been worth nothing. A lot of computer generated responses, and one email from an actual person who apparently knew nothing about my problem. Hey there. I had to install a forced update on my 64bit Windows 8.1 HP Pavillion PC. When the update finished, the PC no longer boots up. I can get to the HP logo before everything stops working, and its an endless spinning icon. I tried system restoring and it did not work, tried command prompt stuff and it didn't work either. The update just came out and ive seen many people online with now broken computers due to it. People have figured out that deleting 'FNTCACHE.DAT' in sys32 folder fixes it, but when I try to, it says the file doesnt exist. (CMD).
Refresh PC would probably work except that when I attempt to run it, it says my recovery drive is locked and cannot be used unless I unlock it. HP installs recovery files on a separate drive (D:) and that's how you refresh/reset. I'm not sure if there is a CMD method of bypassing or unlocking the drive so I can refresh my PC, or if I'm just out of luck.  I absolutely DO NOT want to reformat as i will lose countless files of importance that were not backed up, so any potential fix to this would be lovely.  Its worth noting that this mandatory update is brand new, not even a week old and MS has acknowledged the problem.
Any advice or ideas? I'm running out of patience and methods at this point.

So as you probably know, windows 8 users have constantly been receiving popus telling them windows 8.1 is free. You are given the option to install it or not to. The other night, I received a popup saying that my pc would restart to install windows 8.1 despite me never asking me to. I decided to postpone for 4 hours (since that was the longest option) and finished on my pc before it asked again.

When I turned my pc on today, it finished the update. This has broken my pc. I avoided updating to 8.1 because I heard about it being extremely broken, and it turns out I cant do anything.

The first time I boot/log in, the wallpaper and taskbar loads (without quicklaunch icons) and that's it. If I hover over the taskbar with the cursor, it shows the loading circle thing. The only thing I can do is hit Ctrl + Alt + Delet and either reboot or re-login. The 2nd time I log in or boot, All my icons and stuff load normaly but after about 3 seconds it will start switching between my desktop and the colour of my start menue (blank background) staying on each for about 1/2 a second. After about 5-10 seconds of this, it will return to the desktop with nothing loaded as mentioned before.

What's happening and how can I fix it?

A:Forced 8.1 Update Broke PC

As mentioned before, sometimes it loads normaly for about 10-15 secs, so I used this time to start a factory reset. I'll see what happens when it's done.

Hi, and thanks in advance...

Much of this is a repeat to other threads, until the graphic driver problem at the end...

(I also have an Ubuntu partition.)

I'd left my mp3 player plugged in overnight + an Asus Xonar DAC in a usb hub, when Windows wanted to do an update and conflict over drivers ensued. Strange, because I've selected for notification before updating. Also, have not been successful installing any new updates since the end of May. Was seemingly a common problem, I checked into it, too busy/lazy to pursue and succeed. This part is confusing...?

Woke up to blasting fans and unplugged everything peripheral. First, tried setting back to restore points prior to that night - twice. Could restart in Safe Mode and with networking. Then, could restart normally - but, shutdowns after 20 minutes or so.

Got crash logs, saw driver conflicts (not found) - saved.

Came here, read threads, did restart at Last Known Good Configuration. Restart - Nvidia Geforce driver not found. Went to Asus site, downloaded and installed driver (not lastest version, but last approved version and not much later than one that was installed).

It then went into a system cycled start/restart/etc. attempting to find driver, fix itself - forced to do shutdown to stop it.

Restarted this morning in Safe Mode, followed your instructions for posting. It's been running in safe mode for about 20 minutes now.

A:BSOD Windows 7 update mp3 player driver conflict, graphics driver

Hello welcome to SF .

Critical files are missing please run the SFDT again and let it run it's course.
Most dumps are corrupted, but the one that did survive shows

I'm a little confused by one of my update options. I was under the impression that windows 7 was using wddm 1.1, and that the wddm 1.0 drivers have been available for quite some time. I checked and the driver I have is wddm 1.0, released 10/28/2008, version number So why am I being given the option to update to 'pre-release wddm 1.0'? I tried to get more information to check the version number, but I am just redirected to Winqual Help , which doesn't help me any.

I'd like to test out the wddm 1.1 drivers, and I've read that they're available for 7, but I don't think that these are those drivers, unless there is a typo in the driver title.

yes thats right....

wddm is just a driver model...
its up to the manufacture (here intel) to release wddm 1.1 driver
so until then (most likely they wont) they have to release a wddm 1.1

Windows Display Driver Model - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
that should be a good read....

what they mean pre-release means that these drivers are beta drivers (there is a difference between pre-release drivers and pre-release wddm 1.1 drivers)

Was shutting my computer off before bed last night when it told me to get updates. So I got them. Shut it off and went to bed.

Today I can't do anything. Windows boots fine and everything, I noticed the first loading screen took quite a bit longer then usual. It boots but I can't load anything. Chrome, Firefox, Skype, everything just gets stuck on the circle loading mouse thing. I can load Windows programs like Windows Media Player or Windows Update but I can't load anything else. I work from home and I don't know what to do. I run Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

Set back to the restore point from before the updates were installed. Next time the updates arrive, hide them until we know more about this set. You are not the only one that had trouble with this set.

I got my new comp yesterday and it was working fine but during critical updates the power cord came unplugged and since then my computer won't work. When I press the power button it turns on for a second or two, then immediately turns off, then just continues doing this in an endless loop restart cycle. I cannot access bios and my monitor does not turn on during the few seconds that the computer has power. My power cord does not work in my current old desktop and the power cord from my old desktop does not work in my new pc..

is my computer broken, or is there a fix?
Might just ship it back Monday for a replacement.

I have tried inserting the windows 8 disc, but computer doesn't stay on long enough to do anything. I've also pressed f2, f8, f10, f12 all of those and nothing works or causes the computer to respond.

Sounds like something is glitched big time or you have a hardware failure.

There are ways to try a BIOS install using a USB drive in the old days. Not sure it is possible with UEFI systems though. Easiest, send it back.

A bit confused by this: " My power cord does not work in my current old desktop and the power cord from my old desktop does not work in my new pc.."

Do you have a known good power cord?

Since the latest update following the 1511 upgrade, my PC slowed to almost a standstill. After hours of detection, I found the culprit is One Drive, which seems never to stop trying upload files. The only solution was to unlink One Drive, which in effect makes it pretty useless. Is there any way anyone has found to make One Drive behave as it should?

-edit : almost forget, A few days ago I removed a startup entry in spybot that was related to the agobot worm.

I've read the advice, scanned with spybot, adaware, cwshredder in safemode, virus scanned online and locally, etc.

But I can't update windows. Autoupdate says "Downloading updates 0%" forever, and the website says "checking for new updates" forever.

One of my svchost.exe keeps creeping up to 99% and locking me up. I can end the process and I'll be safe for a while, but it will happen again and again.

I can start task manager within the first minute or so after windows starts, after that sometimes it wont come up.

I use Avast for antivirus, safety.net for firewall, and win updates are automatic, but my history shows they have been failing for at least the past month.

I use firefox to surf, but I use IE to test websites sometimes.

Here's my HJT logfile, any help is greatly appreciated

A:Win Update broke, svchost locking me up

BTW, I'm fairly certain now that the lockups only happen when Windows Update is trying to run. I've turned them off to make my computer usable, but I need to find some way of doing the updates.

Dear HP, Your BIOS update F.2E for the Pavilion dv6235nr Entertainment Notebook destroyed it.  I recently upgraded it to Windows 7 and wanted to apply the F.2E update to fix the "an incorrect message about replacing the battery during startup" error.  After your "update," the machine will no longer start.  It emits a very loud beeping sound but will not do anything else. I don't care if it's "out of warranty."  There is ZERO justification for you offering a "BIOS update" that breaks computers. You need to fix this.  I am seriously rethinking whether I want to buy anything HP ever again.  Please PM me or reply here. Thanks,A very disappointed former customer

A:HP BIOS "update" broke my computer

BUV, according to the updates that are available, the only BIOS update is for Vista; not for Win7. Therefore, it appears that you may have updated the BIOS incorrectly. It is always good to read the information that comes with the updates to assure they are for your laptop and the OS that you are using.

Ok, ever since the recent Auto Update downloaded to my Laptop nothing works right anymore. Here's a List of Problems I started having after the Auto Update downloaded ....

1.) I'm locked out from sites and online games I played regularly. Example : My Yahoo eMail account, MySpace.com, Maple Story, etc.

2.) Every time I turn on my computer I get this error that says Spooler App failed or something like that.

3.) You know how Vista has that feature where you can view multiple windows by looking at it in a Card Deck kinda view. I dont have that icon to allow you to do that.

4.) The Internet connection icon in the lower right Taskbar has a Red X in it and when I mouse over it ... it say Connection Status : Unknown - Server Execution failed. And when I click on it it says something about a DNS error ... yet, I'm still able to log onto the internet

5.) My Network and Sharing Center does not respond. My DSL service company told me how to fix that DNS error by going into the Network and Sharing Center but when I go into that it just hangs there. I'm unable to click anything on the left side and the only way to close it is by CTRL + ALT + DELETE and End Task through Task Manager.

All these problems began to occur after Auto Update and my last laptop which was XP never had any of these problems after Auto Update. I'd really appreciate any help I can get to fix these problems. Other wise I'm gonna have to save up money to take my Laptop to a compu... Read more

Have you tried adding Administrator to Local Users & Group. This fixed a friends PC that had a problem with "Server Execution Failed",but I think they were also getting a warning in event viewer - the error 7023 "The Network List Service service
terminated with the following error: Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service."
*Right click "Computer"
*Click "Manage"
*Under the "System Tools" section, Double click "Local Users and Groups"
*Click "Groups"
*Right click "Administrators"
*Click "Add to group..."
*Click "Add"
*Click "Advanced"
*Click "Find Now"
*Double click "Local Service"
*Click "Ok"
*"NT Authority\Local Service" should show up in the list now
*Click "Ok"
*Close Computer Management and reboot.

Or if you have Home Premium in Safe Mode get an admin command prompt

And then type-

net localgroup Administrators Local Service /add

hit "Enter"

Asus p7p55-m mobo, windows 7 64bit:

I updated my BIOS to attempt to fix a video issue, as suggested by XFX. Now my onboard sound isn't outputting anything. Latest drivers installed, windows recognises card, BIOS has enabled onboard sound. Green bar shows in Windows volume control when I'm playing music, but no sound on speakers. Speakers work fine on a different input source.
