Serious Problem Operating System Not Found on Computer

Q: Serious Problem Operating System Not Found on Computer

Not sure if this is the right forum for this because it seems to be an issue in a few different parts of the computer but here's the problem.
When I start my son's IBM Laptop, the IBM Logo comes up and then some sort of clicking/whirring sound comes from where the Hard Disk Drive on the computer is. AFter this occurs for a few seconds it searches the computer for something and then the following message comes up:
PXE=E6I: Media Test Failure, Check Cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent
Operating Systems Not Found

After that nothing happens. I'm pretty much a novice with computers, so I'm really not sure about any kind of hardware-related issues, which is what it seems like this probably is. Any help or suggestions that anyone has, I would be grateful. I realize there is a good possibility I will have to take this to a pro to get it fixed, but its a Saturday, so if anyone has any suggestions that I may be able to try before Monday, please let me know.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It sounds like you may need a new harddrive. To be sure, make sure all the harddrive cables are firmly connected, especially the power. If it's an ATA disk, try a different slot on the IDE cable and make sure the jumpers on the disk are set correctly.

Can this be done by using the command prompt? Start up repair ran for over 24 hours with no success.

I've had this Sony Vaio VPCEE3WFX/BJ for about a year now. It was working fine until a couple of days ago. My little sister was on it and was playing Poptropica and that was the only thing she did on there. After shutting down the computer, I didn't turn it on until the next day. After pressing the power button, I got the Vaio screen or whatever the screen is called. After that screen has loaded, Operating System Not Found appears out of nowhere. I turned the computer on and off a couple of times but I still received the "Operating System Not Found" After I tried turning it off and on, I tried turning it on again but pressing F8 so that I could get some start up options. I was able to get to the screen and select "Start Windows Normally" From that point, I can get to the login screen and my desktop. The only problem with that is that it takes around 20 minutes to get to the login screen. Once I enter my password, it takes around 10 minutes to get past the login screen. Once past the screen, I get a black screen with the cursor in the middle. If I wait around an hour or so, the desktop will finally load and I will be able to do what I please with one condition. If try and open a program or anything it takes around 10 minutes to load it up and if I try to load a page on Google Chrome, it takes around 5 minutes just for one page.I was thinking about calling Sony to see if there was any way I could send in the laptop for repair before the warranty expires whic... Done a little more digging as this seems to be a harddrive problem. In BIOS at startup, it does see my harddrive, IEO something or other, I will post in a sec with it exactly. I'm using a Ubuntu startup disk which will also see the drive in disk manager, and I have performed a benchmark speed test for it, which it seemed to do ok in. However, I cannot access the drive in ubuntu, not sure if it's just me not sure what to do, but it doesn't show up in places anywhere.

Also, I can't seem to start in safe mode. The message in my previous post, broadcom whatever, comes up before pressing f8 has any effect.

A:how can i get past the can not read Operating System Not Found Problem

First enter BIOS setup to see if HD registers there. If not it may have failed. Test it to be sure by downloading, burning to CD with Windows Image Burner then running a full scan with the HD maker's HD Diagnostic DOS scan.

You can also try accessing it through the door on back to reinstall it to see if it is failing to make contact when plugged in.

Videos for doing this and replacing the HD if necessary are available by googling your model name/number and + replace HD.

If you replace the HD you can run Factory Recovery disks you made at setup or order from Sony support, or get a superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

If HD is intact work through these steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot

I start my computer and get "No operating system found. Press Ctrl Alt Deleteto restart" I think I set my C partition so it doesn't boot on it and boots on the Z partition which has nothing in it. Or unallocated space.

I think when i was trying to create a new partition in Windows 8 setup it screwed it up..... Because that was the last thing i did before i turned it off and got the message......

A:I start my computer and get "No operating system found. Press Ctrl....

This is out of context without the previous information in your thread at Dynamic Disk conversion help (HxD hex editer shows 01C2 is a 0??) - Windows 7 Forums.]

You last reported there that after recoversion to Basic, Win8 was trying to boot on another letter. I gave you the fix for that just now.

Has this latest failure happened ever since you reconverted to Basic disk, or just since trying to create a Win8 partition? How did you attempt this exactly? Did you then proceed to install Win8 to the partition as you should to have it auto-configure a Dual Boot? If not do that now.

Please post a camera snap of the Partition Wizard CD drive map with listings so that it isn't the size of a postage stamp.

I was copying my files on a USB, then I took it out ( without safely removing) and went out. When i got back, the laptop has already shut itself. when i turn it on it goes Operatin System Not Found. I use windows 8.1 and only 1 hard drive. When the PC goes into VAIO care rescue mode everything is white with options like start BIOS steup, contact support, start from media .... etc which are not at all helpful, unlike others problems which makes the screen black. but the same thing happens to me when i change boot mode to Legacy, but back to normal when to UEFI. i don't have any disc. from what i know the product key is in the UEFI thingy in the computer.

When I start BIOS setups it still shows
System Memory : 12288mb
Hard Disk Drive : 1000gb ( so i presume the hard drive still works)

Methods that worked for others but not me :
1. Taking out the HDD, give it a blow and put it back in.
2. Changing Boot to legacy
3. Changing the boot order to every combination i could.
4. Use a program called Wondershare Liveboot.
5. Reinstall windows 8.1 using a USB boot media, which was downloaded from microsoft home page.
6. Using command promt from USB boot media /scannow

the problem also lies in my little knowledge about computer matter. I couldn't find out if the HDD still works, what version or name it has, don't know how to update the bios as well. Please help me guys

Hi My husband & I bought our son a Toshiba Satellite A215 Laptop (w/ Vista) 2 Christmases ago. He has had virtually no trouble with this machine until 2 weeks ago. He pretty much leaves it on 24/7 with no problems (to my surprise), but the other day he came back to find the "No Operating System Found" displayed. After a length of time we came to the conclusion that the Hard Drive was the issue, so we replaced it. It worked like a charm....until last night, that is. To our dismay the "No Operating System Found" display is back. So, if it isn't the hard drive, what could it be?

Some things to consider are: he has not downloaded anything new recently and has a AVG Free as his antivirus, with Advance System Care and Smart Defrag for upkeep. None of these are new and he has not experienced any compatibility issues with them.

There were no advanced warnings to the problem, but afterward, there was some clicking. We were able to get into BIOS to see that the hard drive was not showing up. We tried using the recovery disc to reinstall windows but it would only start up the process, it would not complete the action until we replaced the hard drive all together. I do not know if we have the recovery disc OR the actual Windows OS disc.

Display reads as follows:
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.

Make sure the hard disk is properly inserted in the laptop and has not come loose. You will need a screwdriver to remove the hard disk panel to check. That would be the first thing to check. Post back after you have done so and we will provide further steps if needed.

It sounds like the hard drive has failed. If you have the Windows 98 and driver installation disks that may have come with the laptop way back when, you could buy a replacement hard drive and reinstall everything and be good to go.

Hello everybody. What's a nice day, I'm glad to see you etc...
Yesterday evening : my main browser (Comodo Dragon) coudn't catch the connection to Internet in spite of the fact my laptop 'said' it was connected. I tried Internet Explorer - and there wasn't any problem.
But after using, Internet Explorer jammed so hard that I had to turn off my laptop and turn on again. After 15-30 minutes the same situation. So I turned off and turned on - and the same again. But there was a catch : I coudn't turn on it after turning off.
While I was trying to turn on it system told me about problems with Windows (and maybe with volumes). So i turned off and turned on again. There was a grey screen. And no way to reach the Windows. I took my battery of the laptop, waited 2 minutes and tried to run my laptop. Grey screen. I went to bed.
Today the same situation. So I tried with Linux (pendrive) but Linux Mint had also some problems, so the problem isn't only in Windows I guess. I took of the pendrive with Linux and turn on the computer again : grey screen. So I did what I was able to do. Because I'm a woman I started to click all the keys on keybord. Nothing special. So I retried and Windows ran.
Now Comodo Dragon is working despite not working yesterday.
I don't know why did it happen. Something like DDoS or breaking into the computer (I thought like that because of overloaded browsers)? I checked ip from which was the last logging in and It was mine. Where's the problem? I don't want t... Read more

A:Problem with turning on the computer, doesn't matter which operating system

Alright can you describe the grey screen are there words, errors , your mouse cursor on the screen or is it just a plain Grey screen. I don't think this is a ddos attack if it was you should call you local authorities as it is illegal. Now try to run malwarebytes antimalware and it should pop up with a screen saying if you want to start a trial for 14 days if you don't want to just select no (gives you the exact same scanning ability) and then update your database and run a threat scan tell me what it finds and after that run a full scan with your antivirus and tell me what it finds.

Hi everybody,

I have a 2009 Dell Studio 1737. 3 years ago I had the hard drive replaced at Best Buy. Now it went out again so I bought one and replaced it myself (under setup it shows the hard drive is there so I think I did it right). But then when I went to boot the computer I get an error that says Operating System not found? I cant find the original disks for the computer...Any ideas what I can do to get it to work?

A:Operating System Not Found

Did you replace the system drive (the one with your Windows OS)? If your PC has only one HDD, then it is certainly what you did. In that case you will need either to reinstall Windows on new HDD, or use some sort of imaging software to clone old drive to new one.

Amongst other troubles, my OS seems to be intermittent. I'll walk away from the computer, acting normally, and return to find a black screen with the message "Operating system not found".
The only option here appears to be restarting. Restart takes me to the F1/F10 choice screen, then the same black screen. It appears to get caught in the loop. The only way to get out is to manually power down the unit.

Is this damage to the disk, or do you think reformatting will solve this problem?

A:Operating system not found?

There are several things that could cause this.
Most likely Your drive is acting up, depending on the drive go to the manufactures site and download and run there diagnostic software.
Or your ribbon cable may be going bad. Also go in to your bios and enable the S.M.A.R.T for your IDE drive.

My older bro comes to town for a day, he brought his laptop (win 2000 5-6 yrs old 800mhz 400 mg ram 7 gig hd). It worked just fine here, but when he took it back to Des Moines he got a new and frightning error message. When he tried to boot the laptop he got past the compaq screen and got the error message "Operating System not found". The only thing he is able to do is get into the bios, everything ellse doesn't work. I did a little research and so far the possible problems that would cause that error messager are
1. Hard Drive defragemented beyond reconigition by the bios. (not likely)
2. Hard Drive became unplugged during the trip (bad connection) (semi-likely)
3. Bad hard drive (not likely) (diff symptoms with a bad hard drive)
4. Bad mo-bo (not likely) (If a bad mo-bo the nothing would show on the screen)
5.Virus, either uninstalled windows or messed something up. (not likely, not sure if even possible)
If anyone has any other possible reasons why the laptop would display this message, or just to reconmend which problem is actually the culprit. Granted this in an old laptop that prob should be replaced, my bro does not have the money for it as he goes into his 5th yr of college. As always any and all help is greatly appreciated.

I have a laptop that has an external CD and FLOPPY Drive. I used the partition I386 copy method to get the windows xp files on the laptop hard drive while connected to my desktop. I did the format C: /s command in order to boot my laptop to reach C Prompt. I have a Sony Vaio PCG-R505TL.

When I put the HD back in the laptop I get a NO Operating System message. The Bios says the HD is there; it just wont boot from it. I installed the HD into a different desktop computer and I get the c prompt. This leads me to believe there is an issue within the laptop that wont let the Hard Drive boot to the C prompt. I played with the Bios settings and havent had any luck.

I know the laptop HD works on my desktop. Just not my laptop.

Any ideas what might be wrong?

A:No Operating System Found! Yet everything is there.

If you are saying you "copied" a Windows i386 folder to the Lattop's HDD than it will never Boot . You HAVE to install windows on the Laptop by running the SETUP command , while the HDD is IN the Laptop.
If you are saying you installed the O/S on that HDD while it was installed on a Desktop ,that will never work either.
Windows must install to the hardware configuration where it is going to actually function.Laptop hardware is radically different from Desktop.
If you can get the External CD or floppy drive to boot the Laptop you must install Windows from there.Or if you can run Setup from the partition on the HDD that is in the Laptop your there, except you have to install to another Partition .
I had to use a small Proprietary application that I downloaded from toshiba in order to get the Laptop to recognize the external devices for Booting.I do not know if Sony utilizes the same process, but I suggest you do some investigation at their site,

I sold a computer to someone recently. It is a Pentium II 266 mhz Gateway 2000. I'm not sure about what type of HD, because I haven't taken a look at it since I sold it. Before I sold the computer, I tried reformatting the HD, and reinstalling Win98, but it didn't help. The lady I sold it to, asked if I could be able to find out, and possible fix the problem. Could you give me any advice? The computer still works, but it is, I imagine, a little inconvenience. Please help!!!

A:????Operating System not found????

I would go into the bios and double check that the boot options are set to boot up first to the floppy then second the hard drive. If it is set to look at the hard drive first, it may not be spinning up soon enough on power up. I have read that if the HD is failing, that it may not spin up fast enough to have the boot info read on the first power up of the system. On the re-power up, the drive does not hesitate and spins up fast enough to be read. Something else to look at is that the cables are securely connected on both the motherboard and the hard drive.

Hi all,
A friend just dropped off a computer that suddenly stopped booting. All she gets is "operating system not found". There is no hard drive activity at all so, I thought it was the drive and swapped it out for a known good one. But that did not work either. There was activity but it would not boot. So, I tried swapping the cable. Also no luck. A boot disk diagnostic said there is nothing on the drive ( no partitions) Is there something else I can check in the bios or is there a program that I can run from a diskette to see what the heck is going on? Tell me it's not the motherboard.
Thanks in advance

I have a Sony Vaio VPCEH laptop. Original HDD was a 320 GB SATA Western Digital Scorpio Blue. This hard drive crashed, and would not load Windows, just gave an error message saying to insert repair disc. I made a repair disk and a clean install Windows 7 ISO boot disk. Neither would work.

I purchased a new, blank Seagate 500 GB SATA HDD. (I'm not really too computer-savvy, but it wasn't difficult to remove the old hard drive and insert the new one-also there is only one HD space). Now I am trying to install Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit (which came with the computer and I have a product key for). When I power on the computer, I only get the error message "Operating System Not Found". I cannot get into BIOS or any other boot screen.

I briefly put the old hard drive back in (I can at least get to BIOS with it) to make sure the BIOS boot order was correct (optical disk drive is the default first boot option). But with the new hard drive, it sounds like it's trying to read the disk, then I just get "Operating System Not Found". I have tried all F keys (usually F2 gets me to BIOS), delete, enter, escape, ctrl+alt+del, escape, shift+ F10 and I just get a repeating "operating system not found". I downloaded the Windows 7 ISO from Digital River after finding the link on this forum. I burned it to a DVD. I have tried two different ... Read more

Sounds like you may need to clear the CMOS? Did the BIOS have a password? I found the bottom part on another site, might be worth a try?

I'm not sure if this will work for this Sony model, but try it out.

Power off the laptop completely by holding the power button for 5-10 seconds.
Then press ONLY the ASSIST button until the laptop powers on, and you should get into the BIOS.

Take a look at this as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JL9axnr-8Qk

Asif_Ahmed_Joy Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about Operating System Not found since the failed Win10 Upgrade and wanted to help. One of to things happened during the Upgrade:1) It mostly completed but failed in writing the new boot loader files2) It failed early into the Upgrade, trashing your PC as a result Lets deal with 1) first -- by recreating the boot loader files. You will need access to a working PC for this step in order to create the media needed to repair your PC boot loader.Once you have that, please download and create Win10 install media from this link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install?ocid=ms_wol_win10Note that when you go do download and build install media, the tool defaults to matching what is already installed on your PC (as in, Home for Home, 64-bit for 64-bit).  While you CAN change these settings, do NOT. If you do, the resulting media will be different and will force you to enter a NEW product code!Boot from the media you created, and follow the directions in this link: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2294-advanced-startup-options-boot-windows-10-a.htmlYou will need to go to the Advanced Options screen and click on Startup Repair.  You will probably have to run Startup Repair three times for it to fix all the boot loader problems. When done, your PC should boot OK. If that does not work, then we're on to option 2) -- which is not good news. Whi... It would freeze at the loading windows screen and id have to restart several times to get it running. I have tried to run windows repair but it never solved the problem if it even worked at all. 2 days ago i went through the usual start routine and i got a operating system not found message. Have a Sony Vaio PCG-V505BX Notebook. Every time I turn it on, I get a screen that gives me a "0200: Failure Fixed Disk 0" Message, I have the option to (F1) Resume or (F2) Setup. If I choose to resume, I get a blank screen that says "Operating System Not Found" If I choose setup, I get to the Bios screen which displays everything, but dont know what to do here anyways.
The Bios recognizes the hard drive: Hitachi_DK23EA-40-(PM) I can and have reset the default values, even tried inserting a Windows XP disk (I dont have the restore disk, and Sony doesnt either...I Called) But nothing works. When I insert the disk, it starts like it wants to boot, but wont.
I have no idea what drivers I have and am very limited in what I know about this laptop. Any Suggestions? I can give you any information you need, andwill bechecking back to this post daily....Thanks

Hello everyone

I booted my laptop up today but after a long time on the opening screen it went to a black screen with the words 'operating system not found'

I'm not sure why it's suddenly done this? It worked fine yesterday and I haven't been installing or doing anything with it other than word documents and going on the internet. I'm really worried the hard drive is fully dead and I won't be able to get music and pictures off it

I bought it in 2008 and have had no problems with it before. It has been restored once when the CD drivers weren't working due to a bug with itunes and windows vista. It's worked fine since then until today!

Is it terminal?
Thanks for any help

Hey. my dad just gave me a used computer. It works. However when I tried to swap the hard drive from my old computer and then start it up it reads "OPERATING SYSTEM NOT FOUND". When I put it back in my old computer it works fine. Also the Hard drive that came with it boots up fine. What do I do?

A:Operating System Not Found

You can not just transplant a harddisk from 1 PC to another. The installed Windows has all registry entries for the hardware of the other PC, so unless both PCs are identical in hardware, it will almost never work.
Also check for Master/Slave settings on the rear of the HD.
PCs can only boot from HD if the 'bootloader' is on the first partition of the first harddisk of the first IDE-controller (or from SATA/SCSI).

My laptop makes a weird clicking sound when i turn it off and on if that helps?

I have an acer aspire 9300 and nothing plugged into it except for the charger no USB or cds or anything. I've not had the laptop very long about 8 months.

I havn't installed anything new recently and my laptop (when it worked) hasn't picked up a virus or anything like that. i also don't have the repair CD you get that comes with windows

I have 2 questions:
1) can i fix it myself i really cannot afford to pay for a brand new one or to get it repaired.
2) If i can't fix it PLEASE can someone tell me how to get files off the computer i have 4 years worth of uni work that i really need to keep and i was going to back it up this weekend..before it broke! I just need photos and some documents, if its not fixable will someone please tell me how to get files off there!

I appreciate any help you can give me

A:No operating system found

It sounds like the drive has lost connection/power. The first thing I'd suggest is to check your warranty. If you've only had it 8 months it is likely that it is still covered.

If the warranty is void, try removing the hard drive and putting it back in then boot. It is unlikely it will solve the issue but you start at the simplest place. The hard drive on a lap top is usually pretty easy to remove. It should be behind a trap door accessible without removing the casing.

The clicking could be the drive struggling to move the head. I'd give the drive a good tap but I wouldn't tell anyone else to do it.

The connection issue could be the motherboard. Remove the hard drive, install it in an exterior USB case and see if it is accessible from a second computer. If it is, back up your files from there. External cases are pretty cheap and it is always good to keep an external drive. Make sure you get the right type for the drive.

If the drive works in the external case it is likely the computer needs repaired/replaced.

If the DVD drive is visible in the bios then it is likely going to work. Attain a UBD4W CD (Ultimate boot disk for Windows) and boot from DVD drive. You might need to set the DVD drive to boot in the bios. There will be utilities on the UBD4W disk that might resolve the hard drive issue. To get a UBD4W you can download it (just Google UBD4W or Ultimate Boot Disk...make sure it is a safe site) After you download the file you can burn the .iso to CD.... Read more

When I try to boot up my computer a black screen pops up with the words "Operating system not found". I know it has something to do with the hard drive but I wanted to know how I can get this problem resolved myself. Please help.

Have you installed a Windows operating system in that hard drive in that computer?

Is that a factory-brand or self-built computer?

I'm an idiot and now I desperately need help. My laptop was blue screening and freezing up for months. This morning when I tried to boot it said something like it couldn't find the disk. Now it's saying it can't find the operating system. It won't boot at all. I just want to get it to boot one more time so I can copy my files to a cd. Can anyone help?

I've been working with the Compaq guys via online chat this morning:
I've reset the Bios.
Taken out the HD and put it back in.
Booted from a disk to get to the "repair" section, but when I hit the R for repair it said it couldn't find a harddrive.

Please help...I'm just sick that I could've backed up my files and kept putting it off.
