Serious Problem Operating System Not Found on Computer

Q: Serious Problem Operating System Not Found on Computer

Not sure if this is the right forum for this because it seems to be an issue in a few different parts of the computer but here's the problem.
When I start my son's IBM Laptop, the IBM Logo comes up and then some sort of clicking/whirring sound comes from where the Hard Disk Drive on the computer is. AFter this occurs for a few seconds it searches the computer for something and then the following message comes up:
PXE=E6I: Media Test Failure, Check Cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent
Operating Systems Not Found

After that nothing happens. I'm pretty much a novice with computers, so I'm really not sure about any kind of hardware-related issues, which is what it seems like this probably is. Any help or suggestions that anyone has, I would be grateful. I realize there is a good possibility I will have to take this to a pro to get it fixed, but its a Saturday, so if anyone has any suggestions that I may be able to try before Monday, please let me know.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It sounds like you may need a new harddrive. To be sure, make sure all the harddrive cables are firmly connected, especially the power. If it's an ATA disk, try a different slot on the IDE cable and make sure the jumpers on the disk are set correctly.

In task manager I accidently closed an explorer process, the laptop then crashed. So I closed it down, then it now is unable to find the operating system. Can anyone offer any advice on how to help it find the files it needs to boot?

Can this be done by using the command prompt? Start up repair ran for over 24 hours with no success.

I've had this Sony Vaio VPCEE3WFX/BJ for about a year now. It was working fine until a couple of days ago. My little sister was on it and was playing Poptropica and that was the only thing she did on there. After shutting down the computer, I didn't turn it on until the next day. After pressing the power button, I got the Vaio screen or whatever the screen is called. After that screen has loaded, Operating System Not Found appears out of nowhere. I turned the computer on and off a couple of times but I still received the "Operating System Not Found" After I tried turning it off and on, I tried turning it on again but pressing F8 so that I could get some start up options. I was able to get to the screen and select "Start Windows Normally" From that point, I can get to the login screen and my desktop. The only problem with that is that it takes around 20 minutes to get to the login screen. Once I enter my password, it takes around 10 minutes to get past the login screen. Once past the screen, I get a black screen with the cursor in the middle. If I wait around an hour or so, the desktop will finally load and I will be able to do what I please with one condition. If try and open a program or anything it takes around 10 minutes to load it up and if I try to load a page on Google Chrome, it takes around 5 minutes just for one page.I was thinking about calling Sony to see if there was any way I could send in the laptop for repair before the warranty expires whic... Done a little more digging as this seems to be a harddrive problem. In BIOS at startup, it does see my harddrive, IEO something or other, I will post in a sec with it exactly. I'm using a Ubuntu startup disk which will also see the drive in disk manager, and I have performed a benchmark speed test for it, which it seemed to do ok in. However, I cannot access the drive in ubuntu, not sure if it's just me not sure what to do, but it doesn't show up in places anywhere.

Also, I can't seem to start in safe mode. The message in my previous post, broadcom whatever, comes up before pressing f8 has any effect.

A:how can i get past the can not read Operating System Not Found Problem

First enter BIOS setup to see if HD registers there. If not it may have failed. Test it to be sure by downloading, burning to CD with Windows Image Burner then running a full scan with the HD maker's HD Diagnostic DOS scan.

You can also try accessing it through the door on back to reinstall it to see if it is failing to make contact when plugged in.

Videos for doing this and replacing the HD if necessary are available by googling your model name/number and + replace HD.

If you replace the HD you can run Factory Recovery disks you made at setup or order from Sony support, or get a superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

If HD is intact work through these steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot

I start my computer and get "No operating system found. Press Ctrl Alt Deleteto restart" I think I set my C partition so it doesn't boot on it and boots on the Z partition which has nothing in it. Or unallocated space.

I think when i was trying to create a new partition in Windows 8 setup it screwed it up..... Because that was the last thing i did before i turned it off and got the message......

A:I start my computer and get "No operating system found. Press Ctrl....

This is out of context without the previous information in your thread at Dynamic Disk conversion help (HxD hex editer shows 01C2 is a 0??) - Windows 7 Forums.]

You last reported there that after recoversion to Basic, Win8 was trying to boot on another letter. I gave you the fix for that just now.

Has this latest failure happened ever since you reconverted to Basic disk, or just since trying to create a Win8 partition? How did you attempt this exactly? Did you then proceed to install Win8 to the partition as you should to have it auto-configure a Dual Boot? If not do that now.

Please post a camera snap of the Partition Wizard CD drive map with listings so that it isn't the size of a postage stamp.

I was copying my files on a USB, then I took it out ( without safely removing) and went out. When i got back, the laptop has already shut itself. when i turn it on it goes Operatin System Not Found. I use windows 8.1 and only 1 hard drive. When the PC goes into VAIO care rescue mode everything is white with options like start BIOS steup, contact support, start from media .... etc which are not at all helpful, unlike others problems which makes the screen black. but the same thing happens to me when i change boot mode to Legacy, but back to normal when to UEFI. i don't have any disc. from what i know the product key is in the UEFI thingy in the computer.

When I start BIOS setups it still shows
System Memory : 12288mb
Hard Disk Drive : 1000gb ( so i presume the hard drive still works)

Methods that worked for others but not me :
1. Taking out the HDD, give it a blow and put it back in.
2. Changing Boot to legacy
3. Changing the boot order to every combination i could.
4. Use a program called Wondershare Liveboot.
5. Reinstall windows 8.1 using a USB boot media, which was downloaded from microsoft home page.
6. Using command promt from USB boot media /scannow

the problem also lies in my little knowledge about computer matter. I couldn't find out if the HDD still works, what version or name it has, don't know how to update the bios as well. Please help me guys

Hi My husband & I bought our son a Toshiba Satellite A215 Laptop (w/ Vista) 2 Christmases ago. He has had virtually no trouble with this machine until 2 weeks ago. He pretty much leaves it on 24/7 with no problems (to my surprise), but the other day he came back to find the "No Operating System Found" displayed. After a length of time we came to the conclusion that the Hard Drive was the issue, so we replaced it. It worked like a charm....until last night, that is. To our dismay the "No Operating System Found" display is back. So, if it isn't the hard drive, what could it be?

Some things to consider are: he has not downloaded anything new recently and has a AVG Free as his antivirus, with Advance System Care and Smart Defrag for upkeep. None of these are new and he has not experienced any compatibility issues with them.

There were no advanced warnings to the problem, but afterward, there was some clicking. We were able to get into BIOS to see that the hard drive was not showing up. We tried using the recovery disc to reinstall windows but it would only start up the process, it would not complete the action until we replaced the hard drive all together. I do not know if we have the recovery disc OR the actual Windows OS disc.

Display reads as follows:
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.

Make sure the hard disk is properly inserted in the laptop and has not come loose. You will need a screwdriver to remove the hard disk panel to check. That would be the first thing to check. Post back after you have done so and we will provide further steps if needed.

It sounds like the hard drive has failed. If you have the Windows 98 and driver installation disks that may have come with the laptop way back when, you could buy a replacement hard drive and reinstall everything and be good to go.

Hello everybody. What's a nice day, I'm glad to see you etc...
Yesterday evening : my main browser (Comodo Dragon) coudn't catch the connection to Internet in spite of the fact my laptop 'said' it was connected. I tried Internet Explorer - and there wasn't any problem.
But after using, Internet Explorer jammed so hard that I had to turn off my laptop and turn on again. After 15-30 minutes the same situation. So I turned off and turned on - and the same again. But there was a catch : I coudn't turn on it after turning off.
While I was trying to turn on it system told me about problems with Windows (and maybe with volumes). So i turned off and turned on again. There was a grey screen. And no way to reach the Windows. I took my battery of the laptop, waited 2 minutes and tried to run my laptop. Grey screen. I went to bed.
Today the same situation. So I tried with Linux (pendrive) but Linux Mint had also some problems, so the problem isn't only in Windows I guess. I took of the pendrive with Linux and turn on the computer again : grey screen. So I did what I was able to do. Because I'm a woman I started to click all the keys on keybord. Nothing special. So I retried and Windows ran.
Now Comodo Dragon is working despite not working yesterday.
I don't know why did it happen. Something like DDoS or breaking into the computer (I thought like that because of overloaded browsers)? I checked ip from which was the last logging in and It was mine. Where's the problem? I don't want t... Read more

A:Problem with turning on the computer, doesn't matter which operating system

Alright can you describe the grey screen are there words, errors , your mouse cursor on the screen or is it just a plain Grey screen. I don't think this is a ddos attack if it was you should call you local authorities as it is illegal. Now try to run malwarebytes antimalware and it should pop up with a screen saying if you want to start a trial for 14 days if you don't want to just select no (gives you the exact same scanning ability) and then update your database and run a threat scan tell me what it finds and after that run a full scan with your antivirus and tell me what it finds.

My HP Omnibook VT6200 was working fine up until the point it wouldn't work at all. It went to a fatal error screen that ended with a physical memory dump. Now when I try to boot, I get the HP screen and can go to the bios, but after that it does nothing but say operating system not found. I've been told it could be a virus, power supply problem or hard drive issue. I'm thinking hard drive, but I don't know that much about them. It's been this way for a few months now, and on two occassions it actually started back up. One time I got all the way to the desktop with no problems at all before it crashed again. The second time it got through a scandisk check and then on to the welcome screen for Win XP before it ground to a halt and eventually popped up the fatal error screen again. Please let me know if you have any ideas.

A friend of mine recently made the transition from dial-up to a cable modem. I set it up for her and updated all of her software; anti-virus, windows. One of the updates was via Windows update and included the Microsoft Genuine Software checker. This checker said her copy of Windows XP was not a genuine Microsoft product. The Microsoft update shut down at that time. The computer continued to work properly and I sent an e-mail to Microsoft inquiring about message. This computer was purchased from Best-Buy and has had no alterations made to the OS made since its purchase.

All other updates went without a hitch and several re-boots were accomplished during the updates with no problem at all. She stayed up late checking e-mail, etc that night and had no other problems. The next morning when she went to boot the computer, she got an error message "No Operating System Found".

I'm no computer expert, but I seem to do pretty well with most minor issues. This one exceeds the limits of my "expertise". Does anyone have any suggestions on how to handle this? To date we have received no reply from Microsoft on our inquiry.

The victim computer is an HP Pavillion 7955 running XP.

Thank you,

A:Operating system not found

So - Windows 8 has been removed, Win 7 is still there? Unfortunate.

You MAY be able to load Windows 7 by using and old version of Hiren's Boot CD, version 13 or under. It has an option for Booting Windows 7 or XP when the Boot Sector and MBR have been compromised. Thing is, I don't know from where you can download Hiren's 13- So you can Google it, and try to find the IOS image to download.

You could also try to "repair" the OS using the Win 7 Install Disk - See if it detects your OS - If it doesn't - You will have to save any personal files from the drive, and do a fresh install.

See, the problem is, Windows 7 and Windows 8 use very different OS choosers. Windows 7 uses Boot.INI, 8 Uses something else, maybe it is Boot.INI hidden somewhere. But Windows 8 takes over the entire OS choices menu.

Windows 7 should have been chosen as the Default OS FIRST - You can do this using Windows 8 Manager by yamicsoft:

You tell it "Windows 7 is the default OS" - Then you BOOT to Win 7, from THERE you can remove all vestiges of 8.

Try the "Boot to Windows XP/Vista/7" option on Hiren's Boot CD, this has been removed from versions later than 13. If you can do that, you can use Partition Wizard Home edition to "Fix your MBR" - And from there, you reboot, and you load the Windows 7 Install disk and "Repair Startup"

I'm running Windows Vista on an HP Pavilion dv6000 that's about 2 years old, and I haven't made any changes to my laptop lately. Been using it for the internet like I"ve been for the past month, and in the past week, whenever I restart it, the error "Operating System Not Found" kept popping up, and it'd be fine when I shut it down by holding down the power button for a few sec and then turning it back on. And a couple times I left my computer on overnight, and when I looked at the screen in the morning, it'd display the same error. Is this a sign that my hard drive is probably going to crash soon?

I purchased an Acer Aspire V5 a couple of weeks ago, and every time I start up, the first time around it will display a plain black screen with "operation system not found" at the top left corner.  If I press the power button to shut down (the only way it will in this condition), wait a few seconds, then turn back on it will boot up like it should.  Any thoughts?

A:"operating system not found"

That doesn't sound good. Which model Aspire V5? What kind of hard drive are you using? What Operating System are you using? Most manufactures offer a diagnostic tool that you can download and use to troubleshoot your hard drive and any time my PC's having problems finding information it's the first thing I use to make sure the drive isn't failing. Here's a link to Speccy, which will display your system details in case you don't know exactly what you have.
Then you should probably run a SFC/Scannow to verify that your OS isn't corrupted or missing some files.
1. Open an Elevated Command Prompt by right clicking the Command Prompt shortcut and choosing Run as Administrator.
2. Type sfc /scannow into Command Prompt and press Enter.
3. SFC (System File Checker) will scan your Windows System files and repair/replace any missing or corrupted OS files.
You could also try resetting your BIOS settings. A lot of people on the ACER site are posting the same problem since January. Most suspect their HDDs are at fault, but a few recommend the following.
Reset BIOS on Acer Laptops:

1. Shut down your computer.
2. Power on the system. As soon as the first logo screen appears, immediately press F2. Sometimes Delete is the key that brings up your BIOS screen.
3. Press F9 and then Enter to load the default configuration.
4. Press F10 and then Enter to save and exit.
Good Luck.

hi there,

I have recently run into a problem with my Compaq laptop and not sure on what to do. I recently surfed the web, going to various websites, when i encountered a problem that caused my computer to freeze. When it froze i restarted it, and am unable to get back to my desktop as it prompts on a black screen. "Operating system not found", i am pretty sure this is either a virus or spyware of some sort. However it is crucial that i get my documents from the computer, is there anyway i can do this, or some sort of solution to this problem. I have no idea where to start or where to go, could i possibly get to DOS from that mode? Not sure, Confused. Any help would be great, thanks.

Does it post at all? Try tapping the F8 key and this should pull up alternative boot options such as safe mode...try selecting the Last Known Good Configuration option.

I have a HP4455 desktop. We were gone for a couple weeks, so before I left I unplugged this computer. Just in case the power went off... Anyway, after I plugged it back in and turned it on, I got message: Operating system not found. This is an older computer. I use it only for my business. I have most of the files on it saved to floppys and zip drives, but not everything. So I really need to get this up and running. I have done some research her on your site. Last night I removed the battery. I just put it back in and hooked the computer back up and turned it on. 3 error messages: One was for the time and date. the other two were: error 0251- system cmos checksum bad-default configuration used
error 0280-previous boot incomplete-default configuration used.. I went in the settings and set the date and time and exited. restarted the computer and still get operating system not found.. In the settings area and in the boot section it is as follows : 1 Removable Device, 2 [ATAP CD ROM] 3 Hard Drive 4 Network Boot Is this the right order? Please help. Thanks

I have a laptop that has an external CD and FLOPPY Drive. I used the partition I386 copy method to get the windows xp files on the laptop hard drive while connected to my desktop. I did the format C: /s command in order to boot my laptop to reach C Prompt. I have a Sony Vaio PCG-R505TL.

When I put the HD back in the laptop I get a NO Operating System message. The Bios says the HD is there; it just wont boot from it. I installed the HD into a different desktop computer and I get the c prompt. This leads me to believe there is an issue within the laptop that wont let the Hard Drive boot to the C prompt. I played with the Bios settings and havent had any luck.

I know the laptop HD works on my desktop. Just not my laptop.

Any ideas what might be wrong?

A:No Operating System Found! Yet everything is there.

If you are saying you "copied" a Windows i386 folder to the Lattop's HDD than it will never Boot . You HAVE to install windows on the Laptop by running the SETUP command , while the HDD is IN the Laptop.
If you are saying you installed the O/S on that HDD while it was installed on a Desktop ,that will never work either.
Windows must install to the hardware configuration where it is going to actually function.Laptop hardware is radically different from Desktop.
If you can get the External CD or floppy drive to boot the Laptop you must install Windows from there.Or if you can run Setup from the partition on the HDD that is in the Laptop your there, except you have to install to another Partition .
I had to use a small Proprietary application that I downloaded from toshiba in order to get the Laptop to recognize the external devices for Booting.I do not know if Sony utilizes the same process, but I suggest you do some investigation at their site,

I am trying to help a family member fix their Presario 700 Laptop using XP. When I attempt to boot up, I receive the message ?Operating System Not Found?. I am able to get into the BIOS screens. It has been suggested by my research that I first check whether the hard drive is recognized. Where in the BIOS screens do I check for this? The title is PhoenixBIOS Setup Utility. I see verbiage that says:

Parallel Port is enabled
Base I/O Address: 378
DMA Channel 3

The next screen lets you choose from where to boot up from. The Hard Drive option will yield the ?Operating System Not Found? message?

if you can get into bios, in the first section or option you should see the hard drive, and opposite it you should see auto, click on it just to make sure it is registered by bios, then press Esc and then go to the second section "advance" in there you should see boot order click on it then make sure the order set is first your hdd , you can disable other options. then click on Esc then save and exit . if prob still persit then it is likley you had partition and the boot order has been corrupted

First thing to do would be to check all your connections (especially the hard drive) to make sure they're seated okay.

Hi all,
A friend just dropped off a computer that suddenly stopped booting. All she gets is "operating system not found". There is no hard drive activity at all so, I thought it was the drive and swapped it out for a known good one. But that did not work either. There was activity but it would not boot. So, I tried swapping the cable. Also no luck. A boot disk diagnostic said there is nothing on the drive ( no partitions) Is there something else I can check in the bios or is there a program that I can run from a diskette to see what the heck is going on? Tell me it's not the motherboard.
Thanks in advance

HI, My laptop caught three viruses at the same time, a couple of weeks ago.

Antivirus picked up, and cleaned, the following:
but the laptop started to behave badly. On start-up I got multiple 'failure to write to hard drive' errors, all files are hidden and read only, nothing appears in Start Menu (except switching to Classic View).

I did a HijackThis run (but none of the others, unfortunately) intending to get some antivirus help.

Then the laptop just would not start (it crashed out first). I get the F2 F12 options, but when it tries to go into windows it says "Operating System not found" then goes into an endless loop.

I have no qualms about re-formatting/ installing, etc but there are quite a few work-related files that may not be backed up.
Any advice welcome. Thanks. Rick

Windows Vista is very outdated and is infected.

A "clean" reinstall and fresh start is probably the best option.

Hello I'm new here. I have a problem with my HP DV9700 that I need help with.

Ill start like this, when i purchased the comp it already had a volume problem that was never successfully solved lol. Over the last few months my comp has had problems waking up from sleep mode. It would freeze at the loading windows screen and id have to restart several times to get it running. I have tried to run windows repair but it never solved the problem if it even worked at all. 2 days ago i went through the usual start routine and i got a operating system not found message. What could be the cause of this?

The hp dv9700 is the worst computer i ever had.
