X1 Extreme -> Thunderbolt Dock -> External Monitor: Open Apps Resized and Moved on Resume

Q: X1 Extreme -> Thunderbolt Dock -> External Monitor: Open Apps Resized and Moved on Resume

I have a Thinkpad X1 Extreme (20MF000CUS) connected to two external 4K monitors via Lenovo Thunderbolt Workstation Dock (40AN0230US). Windows 10 desktop extends to all 3 displays.Everything works really well except for a major annoyance: normally I have a bunch of apps/windows I leave open on all 3 monitors. Whenever I put the laptop to sleep and I then resume it later on, all app/windows I left open are automatically resized, moved and stacked up on the primary (laptop) display. Is this by design? Anyway to prevent this behaviour?I noticed that the laptop display is handled by the Intel graphic card while the two external displays are handled by the nVidia graphic card. Could this be the reason?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

hi, I have setup one of my faculty with a Yoga 920131KB plus Thunderbolt 3 Dock. He has an existing monitor (Samsung Syncmaster P2450) that should support 1920x1080. Seems to be current on all drivers and patches under Win10 EDU version. (Including the CCG4 Firmware Update to v55). We are using the HDMI output from the dock. If we try to configure extended desktop to the Samsung monitor at 1920x1080, the screen extends off both sides about half an inch. Maybe also a quarter inch over at the top.  As a work-around, set at 1680x1050, video generally works as expected, but the display starts about 2" in from either side. Generally I don't like using add-on utilities (prefer to just use standard windows built-in options), but somewhere along the line this has the Intel Graphics HD Utility.  I was using that to switch resolution, the Windows settings seemed to track along with changes in the Intel utility, but still overscanned the display.  I played with some other settings in the utility about Display Scale (other than 100%), didn't seem to change anything. A second problem occurs with this setup: when the laptop is used at home, put to sleep, then plugged into the dock, the screen is displayed on the external monitor at maybe 200% (?).  That is, you only see the central portion of the image.  No fiddling with settings seems to correct it, but rebooting usually fixes it. The second problem also occurs with a similar Yoga 920 + Dock (d... Also wanted to mention something I noticed while working on this: I saved a log from the Intel Utility. There is a section in there about "Maximum Image Size". This seemed to be correct for the laptop display (12.2"x6.69") but the Samsung was listed at 6.3" x 3.54"    It is a 24" diagonal display, so that is obviously wrong, but I don't know that it is important. Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620 Report Date: Monday, February 5, 2018Report Time [hh:mm:ss]: 1:21:19 PMDriver Version: 23.20.16.4849Operating System: Windows* 10 Education (10.0.16299)Physical Memory: 16225 MBVendor ID: 8086Device ID: 5917Device Revision: 07Graphics Output Protocol (GOP) Version: 9.0.1066Current Resolution: 1680 x 1050 Display Type: DigitalDDC2 Protocol: SupportedGamma: 2.2Connector Type: DisplayPortDevice Type: DisplayPortMaximum Image SizeHorizontal Size: 6.3 inchesVertical Size: 3.54 inches

Hello Everyone, I am new here so please go easy on me.I just bought and X1 Carbon 5th Gen laptop c/w Thunderbolt 3.0 docking station. The problem that I have is that the docking station won't recognise any of the external screens that are connected.I am using two Acer screens (one is connected using HDMI port on the dock and the other one uisng Display port).I have tried by connecting just one screen but nothing.I can see that Thunderbolt software is installed and its connected to my laptop. The laptop will charge through the docking station and also the wireless mouse and keyboard will work fine through the dock.Lenovo recommended that i should update my drivers. So I installed Lenovo Companion from Windows store. But it won't update my system. After clicking on System Update, I will get an error message saying "There is a problem in reteriving new updates for your system. Please try again later".Hence I downloaded all the drivers from support website and installed them manually but my docking station is still not working with the external monitors. The monitors works fine when connected directly to the laptop using the HDMI cable. Thanks in advance for your help.

I've been experiencing general stability issues with the ThunderBolt 3 dock. I purchased Extreme X1 for work because of the impressive specs and portability of the device. Overall I've been very pleased with the performance and build quality of the device and Lenovo's software suite makes keeping everything up to date really easy. WIth that said, I've had LOTS of issues with general stability of this product. It appears to Lenovo had issues with the discrete graphics (Nvidia Geforce GTX 1050 ti) which may have mostly been resolved with the latest update. I'm on a fairly recent version of Windows 10 (1803). When using the Thunderbolt 3 dock I still experience lots of issues where the device freezes or becomes unresponsive when docking or undocking. Often times I must force power off the device completely because the device is unable to wake from sleep correctly when docked. I have not tested whether device itself is unable to wake from sleep or if it's just because it is connected from the Dock. However sometimes the device WILL wake correctly but then certain functions will not work, notable USB data will not work often but will be powered (keyboard lights are on but can't use caps lock, for example). Or sometimes the VIDEO won't display at all (thunder bolt graphics issue with discrete GPU) however I can clearly see caps lock works on my keyboard. Note all mentions of keyboard here refer to a USB keyboard wired to the TB dock.  Also worth noting ofte... Read more

I have acquired a Thunderbolt 3 dock with 100 Watts power delivery to connect to my X1 Extreme. I then ran a CPU benchmark to see how the notebook would handle the somewhat lower power supply compared to the standard 135 Watts power brick. To my disappointment I noticed that the CPU frequency stayed very far below specifications during the benchmark. Now I'm wondering why this is the case, since 100 Watts should have been enough to power a simple CPU benchmark without throttling, since GPU load was minimal. How exactly does the notebook behave if it is provided with less than the recommended power? Is it specified somewhere?

I have an X1 Extreme plugged into a Thunderbolt 3 Dock (40AN0230US).  Whenever the screen locks it cuts off audio.  I like this. Prevents sound coming from a computer that is locked.  However, when I unlock the computer, the only way to get the sound back it to restart the whole system.  This I don't like.I have 2 monitors (ThinkVision P27H's) plugged  in using Display Port and the audio is playing from one of the monitors.  The monitors are listed in the audio panel, but neither will provide any sound on unlock.  If I change the volume it lags terribly and eventually freezes.  I can switch to internal audio.I have:1) Reinstalled audio and display drivers on the computer.2) Reinstalled thunderbolt drivers on the computer3) Updated the dock's firmwareBut the problem persists.  Any ideas of what to try next besides getting a replacement?  Every item - even the cables - in the chain are supplied by Lenovo.  Should work flawlessly in my estimation.

I used the Lenovo System Update (v5.07.0074) and was prompted to download and install (was listed as Critical Update) the Firmware to my Dock.  As always, I closed all applications and sat as the Firmware downloaded. I got the expected prompt to ensure I was plugged in. I then watched as the upgraded prompted me to install. Installation completed and everything appeared to be fine.  I powered down the thinkpad and disconnected. Worked from the living room, then went back to the dock. Connected, and noticed that before I connected the White light on the power button was illuminated. Shrugged, and pushed the power button. Nothing. I un-plugged the Dock, got a cup of coffee, returned and plugged it back in. Nothing. I then noticed that none of the pass-through power was working on the dock.  So, I unplugged it again.  Unplugged everything connected to it, and held the power button down for 15 seconds in an effort. All of this at the recommendation of Lenovo Support. Who, by the way, was very nice and well spoken. Nothing we did worked. I happened to have another Thunderbolt 3 cable in my bag, and no change. I powered up my new X1 Yoga, and connected the cable. No power. This wasn't passing power at all. I confirmed the Intel Thunderbolt app was running, and confirmed that Windows was not even detecting the Dock.  Lenovo is sending me a replacement. Hiya, All. I've a W541 that's reaching the end of the warranty. I'm trying to decide whether to call the Lenovo support folks or not, because I might be experiencing a problem in a configuration the laptop doesn't support. I have an external monitor- and when I plug into the Thunderbolt port directly, everything works, is happy, &c. I have my desktop extended across both just fine. I also have a Thunderbolt dock- (Belkin) which works fine as well- providing me with a few more USB ports, &c- I really don't need to use it, but it's handy to be able to switch between a P70, W541, and MacBook Pro without having to do the Adapter dance. My trouble begins (and quickly end) when I cascade through the Belkin Thunderbolt dock- The laptop works for a while, but eventually bluescreens with a hardware failure and an NVIDIA WMI Provider (and the watchdog timeout is what's claimed on the Bluescreen). NVidia driver is the most recent- the Lenovo one behaves the same way- and won't play Factorio (hence the upgraded driver). I've the NVIDA K2100M. I can attach to the P70 as I wish without error or crashes. I can attach to the MacBook Pro as I wish without error or crashes. Does the W541 support a second monitor cascaded though a Thunderbolt dock? Because there's only one port, I can't cascade "through" a monitor (and that doesn't make much sense over a mini-DP connection, which is essentially what this becomes). I have other trouble wi... Hi, I'm having issues with my external 4k display to only be able to operate at 30Hz. I have my laptop connected to a generation 2 Thunderbolt 3 dock via the provided cable, and from there I have tried both DisplayPort and HDMI cables (several) to connect to my display. All the technical information I have seen says that my laptop plus the dock should be able to operate at 60Hz even at this resolution, but I'm unable to lock down the settings that enable me to do that. I have pulled the latest BIOS, TB3 FW, display drivers, Intel chipset drivers from the product page.My screen is: AOC U3277FWQ if that matters. I'm running Windows 10 Pro 1809. Has anyone battled with the same issue? I'm running out of ideas on how to solve this. The HDMI port on the side is apparently only 1.4 so this would only support the [email protected], but I'm not using it at the moment. If I set the screen to 1920x1080, I can set the resolution to 60Hz. Best regards,_tero

HelloI've seen postings on Solidworks forum that there can be a conflikt between the Intel® HD Graphics 630 and the Quadro P2000 when running on extern monitor: https://forum.solidworks.com/thread/233873 "I have a Lenovo ThinkPad P1 with an Intel Xeon E-2176M and an NVIDIA Quadro P2000. The integrated graphics for the Xeon processor are Intel UHD P630, which does not appear to have official support from Solidworks. When connected to a second monitor, Solidworks crashes anytime I try to open or start a part because the second monitor uses the integrated graphics. The only work-around I have is to disable the Intel graphics drivers, but this is annoying and I feel like I shouldn't have to do this. The NVIDIA control panel setting is already telling Solidworks to use the P2000 card, but this doesn't seem to matter. All my drivers are up to date with what has been validated by Lenovo. Solidworks just doesn't like UHD P630. Does anyone know if support for UHD P630 is in the works?" Is it likely to be a problem on a Thinkpad P1 gen2 with an Quadro T2000 and Intel® HD Graphics 630 when running Solidworks on ekstern monitor on Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock - EU/INA/VIE/ROK? I ask becuse this will be a dealbraker for me if I buy the Thinkpad P1, as I normally always use external monitor at home when docked!

Running Win10 AU x64 with dual monitors connected to an nVidia Quadro K2200 video card running the latest 369.09 nVidia driver. My desktop extends across the two monitors and I'm using the standard Windows 10 blank screen save after 10 minutes of inactivity. Both monitors blank ok - the problem is that when I use the mouse or keyboard to bring the monitors out of screen save, all the applications that had their windows open on the RH monitor when screen save activated have been moved to the LH (primary) monitor, and I have to shift them back to the RH monitor.

This doesn't happen every single time, but it happens about two thirds of the time. Any suggestions on what to look for or how to remedy the problem?

The LH monitor is an Eizo EV3237 connected via displayport and the RH monitor a Dell U3011 connected via DVI.

A:Screen save w/dual monitors: apps all move to LH monitor on resume

Nick, this has been a topic of discussion on several threads here. What seems to work for some people does not work for others. I run 3 monitors and really do not have a problem with them moving. What I do is right click the desktop and select view, then uncheck 'Align Icons to Grid'. I then arrange the icons where I want them. Then I go back and check the 'Align icons to grid'. that works well for me, but not for others. It will change like yours occasionally, but that is always when I have a program lock up or have to do a hard shutdown, which is very rare for me.

I know I have see third party software mentioned to resolve this problem. I have never used third party software for that, so can't tell you anything about them.

They both worked fine. I upgraded to 2 24" monitors with a 1920x1200 resolution. Fixed; was a driver issue. Problem seems exclusive to a Dell u2415 on DP port 1 only of the dock or to the laptop's DP port (at least for the couple monitors I tried). It's possible it could affect other monitors. My starting point: 9.18.13.4535 / 9.17.10.2843 (Nvidia /  Intel) The latest driver from Lenovo is 9.18.13.4535 / 8.15.10.2725. I'm not sure how i have a slightly newer Intel, but that's what it was. I couldn't install the Lenovo driver. I also couldn't install a newer driver from Intel (10.18.10.4276). In both cases Windows or the Intel installer stopped me saying the mfr provided the drivers and that the installed version was up to date. I worked around by first rolling back the Intel driver. The manual (.zip) install of the latest intel driver worked. This immediately fixed the Dell u2415 on DP port 1 and laptop's built-in DP port.

Hello everyone, I recently bought a Thinkpad X1 Extreme and I am now locking for a suitable Thunderbolt 3 dock. Although I've read a lot of posts about various docks I am still a little consfused about which one to choose. It seems like the following ones would all work with the X1 Extreme:1. Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 135W:https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/docking/universal-cable-docks-thunderbolt/Thun...2. ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock (170W):https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/docking/universal-cable-docks-thunderbolt/Thun...3. ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock (230W):https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/top-tech/Thunderbolt-WS-230W-dock-US/p/40AN023... Please correct me if I am wrong but to me it seems as if the only difference between these docks is that the workstation ones come with two AC adapters each and a special Thunderbolt/Power cable to avoid using two different cables. Or are there any other technical differences? So if I am okay with a two cable solution couldn't I just use the Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 135W and connect it via Thunderbolt while at the same time use my 135W AC adapter to charge the laptop? Thanks a lot in advance.

(1) external monitor connected via Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock/Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 - Type 40AN. External monitor set as primary. All drivers/firmwares updated to the latest versions. Following the latest (Aug-Sep 2019) updates, the following problems appeared:BSODs every now and then, reported as related to dxgmms2.sys. Always while trying to start a movie on Netflix (external monitor).External monitor randomly goes blank (only rebooting gets it back on).Thunderbolt software window pops up on every boot. Boot time considerably longer than it used to be.Only once so far, could not boot (screen stuck on red Lenovo and "Hit Enter to interrupt..." message). Shut-down and restart fixed it. Any possible fixes on these?

Hello - I wish to connect my 24" Dell monitor (it has every port imaginable) to my Lenovo Yoga 720 WITHOUT using the Thunderbolt port. Is this possible? I am a Jazz musician and I with to use the external display for (1) reading complicatedf [e.g., classical piano] sheet music and (2) for use with DAWs (digital audio workstations, such as Abelton, Pro Tools, etc., where there is LOTS of info crammed in tight and a large monitor is needed). My Yoga's TB port is used for a 500 gig Samsung external hard drive.  The Samsung houses my music programs (e.g., the DAWs, Ivory piano, Easy Drummer, etc.), and I placed them there for the fast speed (this really helps eliminate the latency on the pianos).  I don't need fast speed with the monitor; my prior Lenovo G780 worked just fine with my 24" Dell monitor; the G780 had an HDMI port. I don't find a "TB dock" that has (1) HDMI, display port, etc. AND (2) another TB port.  Does such a thing exist? I've tried the crappy "USB montitors."  They (1) suck and (2) are not 24". Am I screwed here? Thanks, - Jeff Newton (Jazz saxophonist and pianist)

Wondering if anyone has come across this problem before. I have a brand-new X1 Extreme (bought in March) and a 4-year-old Dell 27" 4K monitor. In the last few days, I've had really low fps when using the monitor, while the built-in display works fine. This is all at the Windows desktop, ie not games or anything that should be super-demanding. Some more details:Laptop is running Windows 10 Pro 1903, fully updated, and there are no problems in Device ManagerThe resolution is 4K, 60Hz refresh rate, connected to a Thunderbolt port via a DisplayPort-USBC cableI had the same problem when I tried connecting with HDMI (which only gets me a nominal 30Hz refresh rate because the monitor only supports an older HDMI spec, but the actual fps I get is way less than that ? maybe 10-15fps)Switching between TBolt ports doesn't helpSwitching to a different monitor also doesn't help, suggesting the problem is with Windows and/or the laptopInterestingly, if I duplicate the display on both laptop and monitor, then the problem goes away. It comes back when I set Windows to display on only the monitor. The monitor was mostly working fine before this. I say mostly, because it's had problems for years relating to waking up from sleep; I'll often have to unplug it from the wall and plug it back in again for Windows to see it. But once it was running, it was okay.

I have been searching for an answer to this but have not found a good answer. When I move an application over to the slide of the screen on Windows 7 x64 bit OS (Lenovo laptop), and I move my mouse back over to the application the application pops out (to the right or left of the screen the open application). Is there a way to disable this? This does not happen on my Dell Desktop only on my Lenovo laptop and I cant figure out how to disable this feature.

A:apps pop open when moved to the side of the screen.

Wait, you want to not have the application snap to the side or don't want the application to snap off from the side after you snapped it? I'm confused.

I have a window that is stuck at a certain, small size in the upper left corner of my display. It is for one application (Epson V700 scanner).

I can't use the windows key with arrows to move it. There is no option for move or maximize.

Sometimes the window is not visible when starting the application and I have to play with resolution and cascade to even see as much as described above.

The window cannot be stretched bigger.

I can close it.

I even totally uninstalled the Epson scanner software and reinstalled it. Still, at startup, the same issue. Another compute with the same software and hooked to the scanner works without issue.

I would really like to use this software on this computer, but don't know of any way to deal with this. Help is appreciated. Thank you.

A:Window cannot be resized nor moved.

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

I'm not sure why the window shows on one computer and not the other, but it looks like a window that is supposed to be hidden. There are dozens of windows that are supposed to stay hidden - like those for tray icons in the notification area See if the window goes away if you close (not just hide) the tray icon for the scanner (assuming that there is a tray icon for the scanner).

If that makes the window go away, then we know a bit more about what is making it appear.

Can you provide a link to the scanner software that you are installing? Or maybe the names of the programs.

I have an X1, fairly new, and it is connected to a OneLink docking station.  The docking station has two monitors attached via display port. When I lock the computer to leave my area and come back to unlock the computer (after as little as a minute), the external monitors have turned off to standby and it takes5-10 seconds to turn on from standby mode.  I would prefer that my external monitors stay on, while the computer is locked. I have attached a picture of the computer display/power settings.

But today 2nd monitor stopped working agian and I tried all my past actions but it sill not working. Maybe it depended on Windows or thunderbolt drivers? (Cabel and monitor are OK I checked)

My P50, 32GB i7, has an Intel(R) HD Graphics 530 and a NVIDIA Quadro M1000M. When I am using my Workstation Dock (40A5) connected to my Dell P2714Hc external monitor my laptop will freeze completely requiring a hard shutdown.I have tried:With or without the laptop monitor, dual, extended, external onlyDifferent monitorsMultiple display port cables, DVI cablesAll W10 updates; adapter updatesThis may not happen for a week or more at a time. It has happened since I've had the P50 2.5 years. I just put up with it after all the troubleshooting I've done. Sometimes it is fine after a restart; sometimes it happens repeatedly after a restart; often I can only use the laptop screen only afterwards for a period of time. This only happens when the external monitor is connected to the Dock and I am using it.Any help? Before I call Lenovo support (it's still under warranty).

Dear all, I'm new to this forum and would appreciate your advice on the following. I've always had ThinkPads. I recently got a Macbook Pro 15" 2017 for work and it's super smooth in daily operation when  connected to an external 4k monitor. I'm keen to replicate the smoothness as I hate the visual lag of the cursor etc. in my older T460s when connecting it to the 4k monitor. I like the X1 Extreme because it has longer battery life than the P1. However, I'm concerned that the X1 Extreme's graphics card won't be up to the job of a smooth display on a 4k external monitor. Am I right in saying that the X1 Extreme's GeForce GTX 1050 Ti is NOT up to the job of running on a 4k external monitor smoothly in everyday operation? If yes, will it be solved by the GTX 1650 Max-Q that's in the X1 Extreme Gen 2?If I'm wrong and the graphics cards above are actually fine, please help me understand what I need to make sure I order so that the laptop runs on a 4k external monitor smoothly. I cannot stand the lag in ordinary operation.BestNamir

A:Your advice: X1 Extreme vs P1, external 4k monitor etc.

I should have added:The 4k monitor that I will be connecting my new Thinkpad to is the BenQ PD3200U.

I recently purchased an XPS 15 9550 with i7, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, and GTX 960m dGPU that I have connected to a 27-inch QNIX qx2710 2560x1440p external monitor. I have this connected through a Cable Matters USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 to DVI-D adapter and cable.
The monitor and everything seem to work fine at 60hz, except for every time I unplug, turn on, or restart the monitor/computer the first five or ten minutes of use is plagued with constant screen flickering and flashing. After ~five minutes the monitor seems to stabilize and will only rarely have a single screen flicker.
I have read other forum threads describing similar issues with different monitors/cable setups and that there is likely an issue between the wifi card and thunderbolt port. The common recommendation is to turn down the wifi output percent to 75%, however the Killer wifi card on this computer does not have an option under advanced settings to turn down the power output. Has anyone had any luck doing this on a recently purchased XPS 15 with the Killer wifi card?
The cables and adapters are new and the BIOS and all drivers are up to date. Other than the wifi issue, does anyone have suggestions or solutions to this screen flickering problem?

I bought a Dell XPS 13 9350 in December and I wanted to connect it to an external monitor via the thunderbolt port. I bought an type c to hdmi adapter off amazon and it connects. (Actually bought 2 and the problem persists). But occasionally both my screen and laptop will turn black then back on again. This causes my video that i'm playing to either freeze/crash (netflix/youtube) which is SUPER annoying. It goes from occasional to quite often. It's really random.

My drivers are up to date, cable is new and the monitor is new from boxing day.

Any help is appreciated :)

I recently got a Dell XPS with Thunderbolt 3 technology for work, but also have a 2011 iMac with Thunderbolt.  I am wanting to use the iMac as an external monitor for the Dell, so I found a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt adapter to utilize TDM.  However, I have not had any luck making it work when pressing command-F2.  Through my research, I've found that using a pre-2011 iMac with a mini display port and a PC with a mini display port has worked no problem.  I've also found that using a post-2011 iMac as an external monitor with a PC should also work no problem if both computers have Thunderbolt technology.  In addition, I contacted Apple Support and they told me my connections should work since I have stepped the Dell's Thunderbolt 3 down to Thunderbolt, and connected the two machines via a Thunderbolt cable.  I am able to tell that my Dell recognizes the iMac, but have no way of knowing if the iMac recognizes the Dell.  Is there something that I'm missing?  Is there software that would make this work?  Has anyone had success getting this to work?  Any input would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Hi, I think it has DisplayLink sticker or DisplayLink Certified that means you can connect 2 monitors at the same time. It has DP port (6) and HDMI port (5) and you can use both             Side note: From your image, the dock price is US$149.00 + tax (says 7.5%) = around AU$210 but HP in Australia sells for AU$329              Amazing ! AU$100 more for HP Australia for a same product. May be HP has to ship the product from China to the US first then send first class air to Australia. Regards.
