Thinking of buying a new laptop, recommendations?

Q: Thinking of buying a new laptop, recommendations?

Hello, I'm currently trying to buy a laptop for college and I would like people's opinion on what a good laptop would be for a video editting. What specs would I be looking for a laptop that can edit videos smoothly? I'm currently considering on getting an Asus G73JH-A2 (http://www.amazon.com/Republic-Game...ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=pc&qid=1271822651&sr=1-1). I know this laptop is designed more for gaming, but is there any other laptops that would be render videos and edit? My main concern is that the graphics card is not as suited for video editting and more towards games. I'm opening to any suggestions to other laptops or tips. Thanks in advance!

Preferred Solution: Thinking of buying a new laptop, recommendations?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am thinking of buying a new laptop. I bought a high end gaming machine before, spent a lot of money.

Now five years later, its practically worth less than any new decent laptop I can potentially buy.

I have been looking at mostly the GPU. It's seems the technology has advanced so much that no matter what CPU you get, its going to be enough for most games.

So the main thing is the GPU. What I don't get is, you see in some reviews the GPU is classified as high-end or middle-end etc.

So doesn't it mean that at the time the GPU is released, it is the fastest most recent, high end GPU. Later when better ones come out, it gradually shifts to the mid-range category? Or are some GPU simply mid-range as soon as it comes out?

ALso, does higher model number mean better gpu, as it is getting confusing.

I haven't been checking the last tech mags lately, which I did before I bought my laptop the last time.

I'm thinking about making the leap to X64, however, I'm worried about compatibility with my existing 32bit apps. Does it stand to reason that if a program will run in a 32bit environment that it will run in a 64bit environment?

Also, is the performance that big of a leap over XP Pro 32bit version?

I was thinking about buying a new PSU for my system but I don't know if it is really necessary. I already have a 520w dual +12v rail PSU but my new 7800GS OC isn't putting out ANY video so I thought about upgrading to a 600w PSU would fix the problem.

Here is a list of things the PSU must power:

AMD Athlon XP 3200+ CPU
AU31 K7M-NF18G (nForce2) mobo
(2x) 1024MB DDR SDRAM gaming sticks
GeForce 7800GS OC 256MB (AGP 8x)
Creative Audigy4 PRO sound card
WD 120GB hard drive
WD 320GB hard drive
DVD drive
CD drive
Floppy drive

My 7800GS requires a minimum of "400w with a +12v current rating of 20A or more" to operate. I don't know the rating on my current PSU. Does anyone think a new PSU would do the trick?

A:Thinking of Buying New PSU

550W run most cards and as yours isn't the most power hungry i can't see that as being the problem. What make is the PSU? and look for its power ratings on the side of it. Maybe its the card it self thats gone.

This is my first post on this message board so I hope I'm starting this thread in the right place.

I'm thinking about buying a new PC and my main concern is that I can't afford one with a Pentium processor but that's all I'm familiar with. I've seen one I can afford but it has an AMD Athlon processor and for some reason I've always avoided them.

At the moment I have:
Pentium 4 1700MHz
Windows ME
40GB drive
Radeon 9800 Pro

The one I'm looking at has:
AMD Athlon 64 3400+
Windows XP
1024MB DDR RAM (2x 512MB)
400GB (2x200) 7200 RPM Serial ATA Drive
128Mb GeForce FX5200

I'm not a novice when it comes to computers but I'm not an expert either so although I understand pretty much all of the above, some of it does confuse me. What I'd like to know is, would it be worth my buying the new PC for what I want to use it for? I play games occasionally (Hitman, Tomb Raider etc.) but mainly I use my PC for capturing video clips and editing them.

I realise the graphics card is not as good but the one I have now I installed myself without any problems so if I found the new one unsatisfactory I could easily replace it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

A:Thinking about buying a new PC...

i know many other people might post much more detailed responses here, but from my experience, AMD is the top dog in CPU's and has been for awhile. that new comp you're looking at sounds ideal.

I'm thinking of upgrading my CRT to an LCD widescreen.

Trouble is, I'm not sure if my video card will support it. It's an ATI Radeon 9000. I went to the ATI web site and downloaded the latest drivers. Apparently my card is no longer supported; the last update was about 2 months ago. I installed it and it doesn't seem to offer support for the resolution 1440x900, which is the max resolution a widescreen monitor supports.

Would I need to buy a new card?

Hello all,

I've been thinking about buying the radeon x800 pro but I'm doubting if my current system can handle that stuff  .

First thing i'm worried about is the power supply since this thing is... big.
Right now i got 300W power supply, its from A open.
I got a P4 2.8ghz and 2 ram modules both 512mb, also got a DVD burner...

Will 300W be enough, though i doubt it.

Second thing i was thinking about was if the mobo is "competible" with the videocard:
mobo: MSI PT880 Neo, socket 478.
The videocard i have in it now is a GF FX 5600XT 128mb....

Now is suspect the power supply is going to be a problem.
but i wonder if there are any other problems that i might get, so what i'm asking
if i should buy a different mobo and/or power supply.
and if i need to buy another power supply, what would i be looking for?

thanks anyway.

A:thinking about buying x800 pro, got questions :P

I've got that very mobo right in front of me! How odd!

You should be just fine with the motherboard.

But I'd be wanting a new PS if I were you. I tried to run some serious hardware on a 300w not long ago, and the dang thing would'nt even POST most of the time until everything had power and I restarted it a few times.

The RAM is a big power sucker, and you have times 2.

Plus that PS manu isn't the best around. I'd hop onto Newegg and get a 450w or better. I'm running a 550 watt on my hardware, and I have only a FX 5700 Ultra. But the PS only cost like $60 on sale. So they aren't bad.

Incidentally, I am thinking about getting the same card, let us know how it runs will ya!

I'm thinking of buying a radeon 9600 pro and I was wondering how this card handles cs:source, dod etc. One more how much would you recomend my power supply be for this card. This is just a quick upgrade till I can afford a new computer.

With a card like the 9600 Pro, you probably won't need to buy a new power supply.

As for how it will handle games like CS:S, the game should run fairly well at medium or a little higher detail.

My hard disk has just blown and I need to replace it.

(Symptoms: BSOD, followed by "There is a fault on your hard drive" / "Cant find operating system" etc)

My old hard disk is a 500GB Barracuda (ES.2 SATA 3.0-Gb/s, Cache:32MB, running at 720RPM, Model: ST3500320NS) and I would like something at least as fast. I will also need at least c.500GB of disk space.

Two years ago when I bought my disk I was advised that SSD are slightly unreliable particularly if you read/write to the same part of the drive too much. However considering many new laptops seem to have JUST an SSD rather than a hard disk, we have to assume that these reliability problems have been solved.

Please can you advise on:

A) Is SSD is now 'reliable'?

B) Should I buy both a HD as well as a SSD?

C) And if so, what is the best way to configure the two drives? (e.g. Data on HD, but Win7 (x64) Pro on SSD??)

Many thanks

P.S. Is there any easy way to transfer the entire existing Win7 installation onto the new drive(s). e.g. by using Restore? Or would I definitely be better installing Win7 from scratch??

A:Thinking of buying SSD - (to replace 500GB HD) - any advise?

Hi there, dont think reliabilty problems of SSD are a problem

I personally have a SSD for OS & a 1TB drive for data and backup etc, this is prob the best option for you if you need min 500gb space

Size and brands are all down to how much you want to spend i have gone for a vortex SSD but i know a lot of people prefer Intel variants

Also i would always do a fresh install on a new drive, if your old drive has problems you wont know how much data your gonna get of it until you try

Hello Folks,I am new to Lenovo. Having just experienced a very frustrating experience with a top-of-the-range Dell XPS 15 computer - I sent it back for a refund the day after delivery, I have decided to look elsewhere and the Carbon X1 looks a fantastic alternative. My question is - following lots of searching on the internet - are these machines generally robust and reliable? I know this is a subjective question and that unhappy users are far more likley to broadcast their negative reviews than happy users their positive reviews. So there is always a negative bias toward negative information. You folks on this forum are here because you are users of Lenovo computers and any thoughts you may like to share, especially o the generation 5 X1, would be most welcome. I have read the various threads and accept long lead times for delivery etc., it's worth it for a great PC but not if I find I have to return it (this has happened twice for me with Dell by the way). Many thanksRobert

Hello, all.

I have been having lots of problems with my old router (~2 years old) which is the ZIO something something one that came in korean.

it's 802.11 b/g and has wpa aes encryption but the signal from the router to the bedroom is the problem

sometimes it's good and i like it (60-70 %) but sometimes especially when gaming, the signal goes to 20-30 percent and it is just annoying.

I'm planning on purchasing an American brand N router that would benefit me.
What do I look for when buying a router?

Would it reach my bedroom and stay 70%+ everytime?

One more question: If i were in the bedroom and my brother was in the living room and we were both using wi-fi (he's next to the router, im far from it), would i receive any internet at all or will the router distribute internet evenly even though im far from the router? cause thats also another problem we're having.

if one person is closer to the router than the other, then the other wont receive internet

My computer is running slowly on a regular basis, and one or two strange things are happening, so I'm concerned that I may have picked up some unwanted malware/viruses.

I run vista on a Toshiba P100/160 laptop.

The computer makes a lot of 'thinking' clicking noises when I'm doing nothing at all, something else which makes me suspect something dodgy is afoot.

When I type, it isn't unusual for me to have to wait for the text on the screen to catch up with the keys that I have pressed, and I'm no touch typist.

I don't have to have many programmes running for it to slow down. For example, it took about 3 minutes to open up a Microsoft Word file that someone sent me through MSN; I had FireFox, iTunes and a notepad document open at the time.

Microsoft Word 2007 in particular seems to take an eternity to start up.

Something else weird just happened too - the icons at the bottom right of the toolbar aren't all showing. Usually some are displayed and some are hidden (revealed by pressing a '<' icon), however this icon has disappeared. I have also had occasional problems running other programmes like iTunes.

In terms of security, I have AVG, Norton, Spyware Terminator and Spybot S&D running weekly scans with sporadic results. A friend lent me a game that he had downloaded recently; I installed it but didn't play, and he advised me that there was some kind of malware on it shortly afterwards so I deleted - but I d... Guys, maybe someone's got an idea, if I'm making the right decision here. I'm about to purchase a used, but refurbished Dell Latitude E6540 from 2014 for roundabout 700 Euros. For that kind of money I could easily afford a brand new budget laptop. Thing is, the Dell is quite a powerhouse, a dated one, but still, it's packed with OK specs (I think, or more precisely, guess - I'm not really that much of a tech freak)

It comes with:
Intel Core i7-4800MQ (4x 2,7 Ghz)
15,6'' FHD Display
512 GB SSD
1. Intel HD Graphics 4400; 2. AMD Radeon 8790MQ (2GB GDDR5)
and a 24 months assurance

I use my laptop mostly for editing and rendering (Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere and such), slight gaming and research stuff.
Would be great if anyone could help me out with a little hint.

I hope this is the right kind of platform for this sort of questions.

Ok, so here's my problem, I'm currently running a Compaq laptop (F712NR) with Windows Vista. I first noticed this problem while running windows XP after I turned on hibernation, the computer display would not come back on after I "woke" the laptop up. I figured it was a problem with the OS install and Since i wanted to try service pack 1 anyways, I installed vista, since that's what the laptop came with. Now the screen will stay off if the laptop turns off the display for any reason other then just closing the lid which i believe is just a hardware switch that's doing that. I have my power options set to "Do Nothing" when I close the lid. Also when Vista asks if you want do do something the screen will go blank for a bit but the back light stays on. I tried replacing the ram, no luck, and updated the drivers, No luck. I'm stumped, anyone got any ideas?

I have a G51J Laptop
I have a pre-installed version of windows 7 from the manufacturer. I did NOT note the windows number and the sticker wore off.

I had to replace my motherboard at some point. and since then I have an non-genuine version.

Recently I wanted to wipe out my OS and restart anew. I followed instruction from ASUS support and installed from the hidden partition. (they told me that the non-genuine problem would go away, which is totally false btw, as it's still there)

Since then, my computer will not boot properly half the time.
- I try to start the computer, the processor goes on for 1 sec, so does the fan and keyboard lights and CD. But then it's just stuck there forever with a black screen. I have tried hard reset (without the cord nor the battery holding the power button for 10-30-60 sec) and nothing will have it.

- The next day, my computer will just boot totally normally.
- rinse and repeat.

ASUS told me my HDD booting is failing and I should change my HDD

First question : Am I being played? is there another possible issue here ?

Second question implying that the answer to the first is NO :
Whats the best way to change my HDD and be able to put back Windows 7, ideally without paying for a new windows 7 # .

Thank you in advance for your help !

I'd try to retrieve that key and then call Microsoft and have them tell you if it is a valid key.

From your description, it's unclear to me if you now have a valid installation via the restore process or a non-genuine installation.

Likewise, who knows what Product Key the key retrieval application may pull out. That's why you should call MS if you can retrieve a key at all.

I wouldn't come to any conclusion about the hard drive until I knew for sure whether I had a valid key.

If you do have a valid key, you can download a valid Windows 7 ISO, burn it, and install.

I have an EasyNote E6310+WinXPhome and I need to fool it into
thinking its running on battery...
is there a registry entry i can modify to do this?

the reason is that the battery is dead and the fan is really loud and even on Max Battery setting the CPU stil runs at 100% (1.8Ghz) most times..it only stays at 800Mhz all the time when on battery power...i need it to do this to stop it getting hot as it gets really hot and it sounds like a hairdryer when the fans going which is very annoying....

Id rather have it slower, cooler & quiter as i dont use it for any performance...

Have you tried Notebook Hardware Control? Available from http://www.pbus-167.com/.

The free version is pretty much fully-functional. I think the only thing you can't do is save profiles. Very powerful little app.

Another option is SpeedFan, which is available from http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

SpeedFan did not work on my Asus (it didn't "see" any fans).

I'd also recommend a laptop cooling pad. A list (and you can buy from here too) is at http://www.hardwarecooling.com/default.php/cat/33/Laptop_Cooling

I use the Antec cooler at the top and am happy with it.

I'm experienced on home computing, but have no experience with laptops or internet while traveling, so I have a bunch of questions.

I'm going to be doing a lot of RV and auto traveling all over the U.S. So I want to purchase a good laptop and be able to have the internet as much as possible.

So the first question is: Any recommendations as far as good laptops for a person who travels a lot. (I could probably spend up to $2,000 without the DW getting too wild!) What should I make sure I have in my laptop to be able to connect with the internet wherever I am? My cellphone contract is almost due, and I've read some articles about getting a digital cellphone and using that as an access to the internet. Good idea or not? Any company have better plans and service than others? What do I need to know so I don't get talked into buying unnecessary plans, equipment, etc?

We will be staying in hotels sometimes, the RV other times. What would I want to have in my laptop so I could access any free internet available. I've read some stuff about wifi hotspots and hotels having rj45 jacks, etc, but I guess I'm at the point now where I've read so much that I am just overwhelmed with information. Any ideas like what would you do in my situation?

I am also going to be using the laptop at home (Wisconsin/Arizona), so I'd like to know a simple(if possible) way to be able to somehow use my home internet service with both my home pc and my laptop. I h... Read more

Many RV travelers have a directional antenna and a WAP (Wireless Access Point) to connect to WiFi. One of the major issues is weak signals, a good directional antenna can be aimed at the source and make a big difference. I'm led to believe that many RV parks supply WiFi connections. . Decent cellular data access is pretty expensive, $60-100/mo, probably a bit steep for your intended use.

There is no way you need to spend more than $1000-1200 for a nice laptop Any laptop will offer wired and wireless connectivity nowadays. I bought my HP DV9207US laptop through the bargain sites listed below, and I paid $800 for it. I added 2gigs of memory and an additional 120gig hard disk, and have a total of less than $1000 invested. It's certainly more than sufficient for your stated needs.

I could use some advice...

My computer recently bit the bullet and I am in the market for a new laptop. Its purpose will be solely for work use, which will include research and writing.

I was thinking about a mini notebook. I've heard some things about them - that you can hook up the computer to a larger screen when needed, though light enough for you to transport anywhere easily.

I really don't have much time on my hands at the moment to research, that is why I'm reaching out to the techspot community.

I am a new member; however, my several interactions with the techspot community have been favorable.

I'm looking to spend about 1000 dollars, maybe a LITTLE bit over on a laptop. I plan to use this for college uses ranging from essays, internet use, programming in C++ and higher, basic microsoft office things, video/audio editing, and maybe a little bit of entertainment on the side.

Also, I don't want it to be too heavy, I'll be bringing it with me to a lot of places. Also, i'll be working on it at home with my wireless network. Is there anything else I should describe?

So basically I'm just looking for a laptop within that price range that could do all of the mentioned above. ANy ideas? Show me like some links or names with prices...thanks!

Depends on what you want to use the laptop for? Gaming, word processing, etc...? Can we assume that since you are asking if it can run on 220 volts that you live somewhere in Europe?

Hello all,

I'm looking to buy a used laptop in January, after the christmas season has died down. The purpose of this laptop is singular. I want to run Ubuntu 64 bit, with the cinnamon UI. As you can probably guess, I'm going to be using it to learn Linux. That is its entire reason for existence in my life.

I'm not even thinking I'm going to be doing anything crazy with it either. Web browsing, email checking, word processing, music listening, movie watching. Its going to be a basic end-users machine. I do know I want a quad core processor, 6-8 gigs of ram, and I want the weight to be under 5lbs. But everything else I'm up in the air about.

My price ceiling is $350. Not one penny over.

I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing a website, or a place to search around on. So I came here and wanted to ask, does anyone have any suggestions on laptops with all this in mind?
