Solved: Can't access shares from second user account

Q: Solved: Can't access shares from second user account

I have a laptop with Vista plus a desktop with XP Pro x64 on a home network. Everything works fine accept the desktop can't access the shared folders on the second user account of the laptop. The administrative account on the laptop shares fine. The second account is a standard account. Nothing shows up in the shared folder list for that account.

On the desktop it shows the second user folder of the laptop as being shared but when I click on it I get an error message saying I don't have permission to access it. The other shared folders work right.

I'm still pretty inexperienced with Vista so maybe there is something I forgot to do when setting this up.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I found a fix for this. You have to add Everyone in the People to share with settings.

Under Win7 I set up an additional user account named "admin" which is member of the user group "Administrators". The predefined account "Administrator" is disabled. I did this on all four PC's in my home network. All PC's are
using Windows 7 pro except one which is already upgraded to Windows 10 pro. All PC's are members of a work group.

On one PC I set up some shares which can be accessed by all users for reading very easy because all accounts exist on each PC and the passwords for the accounts are the same on each PC.
What now happens (or better to say not happens) is the following:
A normal user on a PC can access the shares on the Win7 PC providing the shares without any problems. The user "admin" can not access. The error message tells me, that the account is not enabled. This happens on the Windows10 PC and on one Windows
7 PC. It works without any problems from the third PC.

When I enabled the account "Administrator" on the Win7 PC providing the shares it works. It seems, that Windows uses the wrong credentials to connect to the share. It is confusing that it occurs only on two of three PC's.

If someone could help I would be grateful.

A:Access to shares using account Admin instead Administrator does not work

Hi Biker,
Thank you for your question.
For troubleshooting, we could do the following steps:

Configure the share file on other PC, then use this account which has admin permission to check if the issue persistDelete this account profile on two PCs which share didn?t work, then rebuild the Windows profile to check if the issue persistTurn off Windows firewall on two PCs to check if the issue persist
If there are any questions regarding this issue, please be free to let me know.
Best Regard,
Jim

Hi all. I am using XP home and have my account only on it. I wanted to create a new account for my spouse and was able to successfully create the account, and if preferred, use a password.

However when i try to log in to the new account, the desktop wallpaper momentarily flashes in a fraction of a second and brings me back to the login. Second, third, forth and any more attempts to login have the same result.

Any ideas on what might be creating this issue an how to resolve it?
Much appreciated.

My computer crashed (motherboard - not disk) so i removed my hard disk and installed it in another computer. However, I cannot access my files in my \documents and settings\owner directory. It tells me it is not accessible - access is denied. I did have a user account set up on that drive. I remember what the password was but not the account name. Is there any way to remove the security on that directory so I can access my files? This is all on my original hard drive which I installed as my secondary drive on this machine.
Thanks

My wife's user account (set up as administrator) on our Dell laptop cannot access any internet sites via Internet Explorer. Each time it returns an error message: Access Denied (policy_denied) and a direction to contact the network administrator.... unfortunately, I guess that's me....

This looks like a Content Advisor problem, but it's not enabled on her account and it's set to the most permissive settings in any event. This message occurs for even the most basic requests, e.g. www.google.com

Other user accounts on the laptop are able to get to their home pages.

We recently converted to Comcast Cable internet access and noted this issue thereafter. I found some discussions regarding Comcast branding IE, which it did, so I removed their branding, but this didn't solve the problem. The laptop is wirelessly connected to a Linksys router and then to the Comcast modem. We also have a desktop which isn't having any internet connectivity problems. We're running Windows XP Home edition on both computers.

I can't detect any differences in her user account settings (Tools/Internet Options....) but maybe I'm missing something.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

According to the windows.microsoft.com website "Your user account prevents anyone who is using a standard account on your computer from seeing your files." My wife and I share our computer: I have an administrator account and she has a standard user account. Yet when she is logged in she can access my documents and read them via File Explorer, though she cannot delete them. This seems to contradict what Microsoft say or am I missing something? Grateful for any advice.

Since writing the above I have found that the same situation exists on the other computer that we share, but in this case she is able to delete the documents as well.

Sorry, everyone, I think I've solved this. I must have set particular sharing permissions and forgotten I'd done so.

I added a password to my Admin account on my Windows XP desktop PC; it is the only account on the computer. When I added the password (through Control Panel - User Accounts), the system asked if I also wanted to block other users from accessing files on my computer, since even if I added a user account, they still would be able to see my files. So I said yes to the question.

Then I discovered that I could no longer access any shared folders on the desktop from my networked laptop. I deleted the password on my desktop pc, but it still won't let me access the files from my laptop. In Control Panel - User Accounts there is no option to unblock access to files. I tried my computer's help, but there was nothing there.

In Windows Explorer - Sharing, all the folders that I want to share across the network have the proper boxes checked, but they are now disabled.

This is occurring on my home system.

Does anyone know how to undo the file folder blocking?

Thanks.

A:User Account File Access

Try Setting Permissions for a File or Folder

To set the permissions for a file or folder:

Use Windows Explorer to locate the file or folder for which you want to edit the permissions.
Right-click the folder, and then click Properties.
Click the Security tab.
To add a new access control setting to the folder, click Add.
Select the users, computers, or groups that this access control setting is applied to, click Add, and then click OK.
To remove an access control setting, click Remove.
To edit the permissions for any group, select the user or group, and then use the corresponding check boxes in the Permissions pane.
Click OK to accept the settings, click Cancel to cancel any changes you have made, or click Apply to apply the changes without closing the file or folder properties.

Go to Control Panel, User Accounts and see if your account type got changed. If it did, you will need to log in as an Admin to change it back.

You say you can't access programs except MSN (but Spybot and McAfee are programs, too, so you must be able to access some things). What happens when you try to run other programs?

Hi again,

As I am new to networking, I hope this isn't too noob a question. I have 4 machines on a network with a router/hub. I have various things stored on different machines, and don't really want to put them all in a central location. My question is that the way XP seems to work is that in order for one machine to log into another, each machine must have a seperate user name on each computer. Normally I foundn't find this to be a big deal, but now when you turn on the computer, you have to type a password when logging in (turning on) the machine. Before it would automatically log in that user. Is there some way to have all the permissions set for each machine but avoid this log hassle? With the exception of the kids machine, all the users would stay the same all the time. There wouldn't be a need to have so many accounts. The way I have it set up now, everything works but there are 4-5 accounts on each machine. Is there a better way?

Thanks

Hello, I hope someone can help, I booted up my PC today and it won't complete the log in process, I get to the log in, enter my password, hit enter and it just sits there with my user name and welcome with the little dots spinning around.

I have 3 other unused accounts on the PC from back in the Windows 7 days that have never been logged into, so I tried one of them and it worked fine and went through setting up the user account. All user accounts are Administrator. But I just can't access my main account. Using one of the other means that I will have to go through all the settings for my apps again and reactivating them it appears, some stuff only allows a minimum amount of activation, I really don't want to have to go down that path, this is a DAW only machine used for music production with a lot of software and literally thousands of plugins, quite possibly a lot of work if the majority require reactivating and setting up.

I do have a recent backup image with Acronis, whether or not that will work once I try to restore it who knows. But if it was possible to gain access to my login would be much prefered, so any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

This did not occur after a Windows update or anything, I have kept my PC on version 1511 of Windows 10

Thank You

Hi,

I currently Cisco VPN into the office when i'm working from home and I lose all my connection to resources at home. Is there a way I can still be on the Cisco VPN and access my home resources as well without having to disconnect from the VPN? Any help or advice would be great.

Thank you!

A:Solved: CISCO VPN into the office can't access home network shares

Nope. The way Cisco VPNs work is the network administrator sets policies and rules at the VPN server. This can be a router, firewall, or VPN concentrator. These policies and rules get pushed down to the VPN client when you connect and log in. There's no changing these policies or rules from the client side. The network admin would have to change it at the VPN server. What your network admin has done is to tunnel all traffic down the VPN tunnel therefore negating access to any of your local network resources. If you want to ask them to make an adjustment change for your connection, you'll have to ask them to allow split tunneling. Don't be surprised if they say no as allowing split tunneling will in essence provide a gaping back door into the corporate network.

It might not let you do this either.

My 15 year old son was trying to bypass Cyberpatrol and in the process of tring to change his account from an adminstrator to a standard user I've made things worse. I changed the administrator account in his name to a standard user account but there was no other administrator account on the PC other then something called CYBERPATROL_SERVICE which is an administrative account istalled automatically by Cyberpatrol. This was the first mistake. Then he guessed the password to Cyberpatrol and attemped to uninstall it...it only 'half' uninstalled it, leaving a real mess of error messages and no access to let me change anything. I can now neither reinstall cyberpatrol or unistall it, nor can I see a way to log back in as an administrator to effect any changes to put things right. Three emails to cyberpatrol have elicited no response so I'm coming to the conclusion the onlu way out is to reinstall Windows 7 and find a different web filtering program- is there any way to log back in a an administrator? I didnt delete the admin account, only changed it to a standard type. Then If I can get back in as a administrator how can I get rid of the unwanted Cyberpatrol?
Thanks for any suggestions......

Hi,
after I started up my new Dell inspiron with Vista Premium 32bit , I set up an admin account for myself and two additional user accounts for my kids. While I was logged on one of the kids messed with the account info. Now I am locked out of the admin account, but am still able to log in to my kids account.
Is there any way to recover the admin account or create a new one without having the old info?
thanks

A:lost administrator PW, still have access with one other user account

Hi Bayern, and welcome to Vista Forums.

This tutorial may be able to help you by resetting the password for that account. You may need to use Method Three.

Reset User Account Password

Hope this helps,

Hey Guys,

I'm having a fairly similar issue to this one. My boss at work (who is completely computer illiterate) decided to install Norton Internet Security on his own. And now the HotelGuest account which is a Limited User account can't access the internet at all. I have tried serveral solution on my own - uninstall NIS, delete user account and then recreate it, reinstalled NIS and triple checked NIS user settings to insure account was active and allowed Internet access, I even tried the one suggested here, which caused an odd occurence. Once the Limited account is changed to Admin the internet works and once its changed back it stops again, and since this is a public computer leaving it set to Admin(my boss's suggestion) is completely out of the question unless I want to spend 10 hours a day cleaning up Porn, P2P appz, and otherwise "Duct Taping" this POS back together.

Any ideas that may help with this issue are great appreciated and welcome.
Thanks in advance,
Arminius

I've split your post into it's own thread, since we like to have one problem per thread.

I have 5 computers on 2 networks (home and Log Me In Hamachi2 VPN) and they can all connect to eachother flawlessly as long as none of them are logged on with my user account. I have a user account on 3 of the 5 PC's and when logged on to any of the 3 with my account and I try to access any of the other 2 PC's that I also have a user account, I get the following:

\\computername is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions
The network address is invalid.

I can access the 2 boxes that I dont have a user account while logged on with my user account from any of the 3 with my user account. Its definitely a user account issue. Is there a possible name conflict? I cant figure it out and nothing similar with google.

4 boxes are win 7 pro 64 and one is vista home premium 64

Are you certain that the computer names are all different on every machine?

Are they all part of the same Workgroup?

I created a non-administrator account in Windows 8 for family members.
I want to restrict access to specific folders.
In Windows explorer, I right click properties on the folder, go into the security settings,
but it's not clear what I need to do. Highlighting "users", I attempt to deny access but I get a warning
that seems to be communicating that it would also block admin access to that particular folder.
