Preferred Solution: recover a deleted partition on external harddrive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I was installing a fresh copy of Windows, when I wasnt paying attention and accidentally deleted the wrong partition(which was my full 80g hard drive that has everything on it!!). Luckily, I noticed what I had done BEFORE I formatted it. So now the partition is an unpartitioned 80g, and I installed a fresh copy of xp on the RIGHT hard drive i meant to install it on in the first place! Can anyone help me? That hard drive is very important to me, and I know there has to be a way to get it back. For right now I am leaving the unpartitioned drive alone until I get some feedback. I have a hard drive that I keep my software on. I deleted the partition on accident and would like to recover it without having to reformat. I really don't feel like installing all my software again. Would a system restore fix this problem?

A:Deleted the partition on a harddrive

No.

You may be able to recover the partition with:

Free:

Testdisk Documentation
Testdisk Download
Diskinternals Partition Recovery
DriveRescue
Testdisk Boot Disk
Partition Find & Mount
Free DTIData NTFS Partition Repair Tool

Commercial:

Diskinternals Partition Recovery (Demo)
[email protected] Partition Recovery
Bootmaster Partition Recovery
ZAR Partition Recovery
DIY DataRecovery DiskPatch
Partition Table Doctor
Nucleus Kernel Recovery for NTFS
But you better be prepared for the worst. You will probably need to restore your backup.

Hi-

I accidentally started to install a new version of XP Home on an existing partition that had a good working XP home on it. I got to the point on the install where it highlighted the good partition and I hit "L" to erase it. At that point I stopped and tried a repair from the XP Home disk but no luck. Since it didn't overwrite it (probably just erased some pointers) is there any way to get back the good partition/OS that was on this disk?

Thanks

Hi Guys,

I have two HDs, 80 Gig primary and 120 gig secondary. I had win xp installed and running off the 80 gig and I backed up all my files onto the 120 gig. I then decided to format the 80 gig drive

I used a win 98 boot disk and formatted the 80 gig hd. then I started the win xp cd and it asked which partition I would like to choose. I chose the partitioned 120 gig drive not realizing what I had done. I confirmed the partition removal and then realized what I did. So I start flipping out and I restart my comp

I looked for my files and 120 gig drive but it was gone. I'm really going crazy. So I researched a little and I have two utilities on disk (mbrwork and testdisk) I started to run mbrwork and it has been searching for recoverable partitions for the past 2 hours. I don't know what to do and I really need the files on the 120 gig HD. I didn't install windows and I haven't done anything other than run the utility. Can someone please help me. I don't know what I'll do if I can't get my files back.

Thanks

A:recover deleted partition please HELP!

Rob, There are utilities that can rebuild a File Allocation Table. I have never used one but I understand that they work by installing the hosed drive as a slave to another bootable drive and running the software from the boot drive to fix the slave.

I can't tell you any names but a Google search should get you plenty of hits.

Good luck. There is hope.

>>I checked with one of my favorite software producers, Acronis, and found this. If it works like the other software I use from them, it'll be all you need.

Hi everyone,
I was trying to format my laptop and install a new version of Windows 8. I deleted my old Windows 8 partition and tried to install the new version, but I got an error about some GPT stuff.
I've looked for what it is and I found out that I could have just reinstalled Windows 8 using the Update and Recovery of Windows.
The problem is that I don't have the Windows 8 partition anymore. Is there a way to recover it now? Or do I have to install a new version of Windows 8?
In case, could you tell me how to go around the GPT problem?

My Laptop is a Lenovo Z580 and I haven't done anything after deleting the Windows 8 partition.

Thank you!

Boot from the Windows installation media in UEFI Boot Mode, so you can use GPT (GUID Partition Table).

Quote from this post: UEFI Boot Mode (installing using the GPT partition style) and Legacy BIOS Boot Mode (installing using the MBR partition style). -> link

   Tip
Error message when you boot from the Windows installation media in Legacy BIOS Boot Mode:

Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style. (see screenshot below)

That is because Windows can only be installed to MBR disk in Legacy BIOS Boot Mode, but you plan to install Windows on a GPT disk.

- Boot from the Windows installation media in UEFI Boot Mode, so you can use GPT (GUID Partition Table).
- But if you want to use MBR (Master Boot Record) partition table, then delete all partitions on the disk.

Ok so I apologize in advance if this story is a bit long, and horrifying (actually it's probably entertaining xD). I purchased the Lenovo y510p gaming laptop on back on July 14th 2014. I got the laptop, and it just didn't work for me. It didn't play the games I wanted it to, it had overheating issues, the keyboard had a really sharp edge making typing uncomfortable as well. After installing Sony Vegas and Avast, and just shifting some of my personal photos/music over, I made a backup of the laptop using the OneKey Recovery software. This backup was made to one of my 500GB external hard drives. So I then decided that I just didn't like the laptop, and it was time to return it. I called Newegg, and got my RMA all ready to go. Because I had lot of my personal files and programs, I decided the fastest way to delete everything would be to use the OneKey Recovery by Lenovo, and do a factory reset. At the time, I didn't think anything of this then simply putting the laptop back to exactly how I got it. I even booted it up after the factory reset, and it looked just like the first day I got it. Fast forward 2 weeks, and my RMA is denied from Newegg:   Your RMA (RMA Number: 60470880) return was received and sent to our Inspections Department for closer examination. 34-313-740 NB LENOVO IDEAPAD Y510P 59406636 RTSystem has been modified/altered original manufacturers operating system has been removed cannot access restore partition, this voids Newegg w... A:How to recover deleted "Recovery Partition"

If you only used One Key Recovery by Lenovo, it should not delete the partition. (I hope you did not format the whole system) Once you receive the laptop, you can check if this partition still exists in Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Disk Management. It should show some drives, other than the C: , D: and the SSD (if you have). Those drives are the recovery partitions. I can post a sample screenshot in the evening. Sadly, I do not know any way to recover that partition. As I have seen on this forum several people who lost that partition could not roll back their laptop to original settings without a recovery drive (which is different from a recovery backup).

I just made a terrible mistake!

I've recently set up a desktop PC after 2 years without one.

Anyway, I've been backing up all my old 3.5 Inch HD's to newer and larger drives.

I just got finished moving a heap of files to a new drive, and when done, accidentally deleted the partition of the new drive and was just about to format it thinking it was the old empty drive when I realised what I had done...

So my question is, is it possible to recover a deleted partition? I'm guessing all the information is still on the drive as I haven't actually formatted it.

Any help would be much appreciated!

A:How can I recover an accidentally deleted HD partition?

Yes.

Undelete it.

Partition recovery function on any number of partition tools will do that.

Partition wizard free is popular.

Best done from a boot disc here: Partition Wizard Bootable CD allows user to manage partition directly with partition manager bootable CD.

Thanks for your time and answer guys.

Sincerely yours,

A:DISKPART, how do I recover a deleted partition?, PLEASE HELP!!!

Hello Sam, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I hope you have a backup of that deleted partition somewhere. Since you cleaned the disk, created new partitions, and formatted, the chances of recovering that deleted partition are very slim.

You might see if an option in the tutorial below may be able to recover it for you, but it doesn't sound promising.

While trying to reinstall Windows 8 on a home PC we pulled the wrong hard drive and did a clean install on a drive that was being used to store a ton of files (videos, images, documents, etc) rather then a smaller drive that should have had the OS installed on it.

The original partition (on the storage drive) was deleted and then had 8 clean installed on it.

Is there any way to recover that deleted partition to get the files back?

Right now we're running a SuperScan with [email protected] Partition Recovery on the drive in question and it looks like it's going to take about 5 hours to complete. What's worrying us at the moment is the software is showing the deleted partition, and has folders from it in it, but there are no files. For example no videos or images yet.

I'm wondering if that just means the scan needs to complete or what. I don't know if anyone here has used [email protected] or has a better recommendation for partition recovery (if it's possible at this point) but the partition we're hoping to recover is listed as "Good".

Thanks in advance for any and all advice, if you need any more information, just let me know.

If you didn't create a new partition and installed files or a new OS over the space that was once the old partition, then there is a good chance you can recover.
Use the Free TestDisk program. I have had the best luck with GetDataBack. You will need another partition or drive of the same size or larger to restore your files to.

I have two hard disk in my computer, Disk0 (500gb) and Disk1 (150gb). Problem is with disk1. 1st it was being used for Windows 7 (EFI, one main primary partition and Windows hidden system partitions) then I formatted it as FAT32 and used for backup and data.

During Windows 8.1 installation, when I was erasing partition on Disk0, accidentally / mistakenly deleted all small partitions on Disk1, didn't touch the bigger main partition of 149gb where the data is stored, now the situation is that in Windows Storage Management it's showing that partition as healthy partition but not as FAT32 but as 'Other' and I can not assign drive latter to it as all options are grayed out.

Tried some data recovery tools, can recover data using some of them but it's messed up, no folder hierarchy, no proper file names, very difficult to sort out, would you please suggest any better option, any way to recover partition to working state, or any data recovery with proper folders hierarchy?

A:Recover deleted partition table

If a partition is deleted but not formatted then it can be recovered using Partition Wizard Partition Recovery Wizard - Video Help.

Try also using PW to assign a drive letter to the data partition. How to Change Letter with partition manager - Partition Wizard Video Help.

If that fails try using Diskpart to assign a drive letter from booted Win7 installer System Recovery Options Command Line: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...=ws.10%29.aspx

A failed partition which cannot be assigned a letter using steps above can sometimes have its table restored using DiskGenius trial.

Once you can assign a letter I'd back up your data which should have already been backed up if it has any value to it, then run Disk Check or Partition Wizard Check File System

Oh kay, I know I am dumb for doing this, but let me explain the problem. I was going to reformat and install Windows XP on my old computer. So, I had my external hard drive in and a USB wireless adapter in. Not knowing, I unplugged the USB adapter and left the external plugged in. I went to reformat and made two partitions out of my external, after notices what I have done. I freak and turned off my computer. Now, I have two partitions both in a raw format on my external. What should I do?

I do have a trial of Get Data Back (I heard it was pretty good.) I am afraid though, because it's two partiton. I will only get half of the my data back. Should I just make another reformat for the external? I don't know what to do and I am pretty scared.

I deleted a partion using the windows 7 installer disk. Unfortunately I was a bit click happy and deleted my secondary drive (one partition if you call it that, as it took up the whole disk). This is my data drive. I keep everything there including a lot of very large, multimedia files that I cannot live without. After picking my heart back up out of my shoe I started asking for help and downloading as many free tools as I can. None of them have worked satisfactorily. Find and Mount looked extremely promising, saying it would find a mark on the HDD where a partition had been made previously and then allowing me to mount a read only version, then copying all the files as though the partition had never been damaged, if I wanted. Funnily enough not only did it fail to find a visable or lost partition on this drive, it even failed to find working partitions on any other drive. Pfft.I've tried Paragon Partition Manager. It told me my drive had errors and to run chkdsk. I did this but it didn't help. The programme had the same errors when I tested it on another drive. Another pfft.I tried EASEUS Partition Manager. It found the files... but it copied all 253 gb of them as 'raw' files or something like that. This means they were completely out of order, no folders and renamed 'file001.jpg' etc. This is useless for me as a lot of my files are .RARs that need to be in a sequence to option or similar issues and also with over 25000 files I cannot be arsed o... I tried to use a restore program (restoration.exe) to try and recover them. The files came back with the correct file types and the size of files looks right but when I try to open many of the files either I get a message stating that they are not valid files for that format or the application does not recognize them. I cannot re-restore them because they are no longer in the deleted sectors. I think that some of the file locartion information ay have been overwritten or did not make it back with the restore. Could you please help me to solve the problem i faced recently. Let me explain you what happened in detail.
Initially I had 2TB Seagate Expansion Desk HDD, partitioned into 500GB, 13GB, 293GB, all three Bitlocker encrypted and 1 more 500GB unencrypted partition, the rest of the space was unallocated. Few days ago, by mistake, while I was creating Windows Recovery
Disk chose the wrong drive letter and ended up whole partitions above deleted. Here?s what I have in HDD now: 32GB Windows 8 Recovery partition and 1831GB unallocated space. After that I haven?t made any changes to the drive. I was able to restore the data
from the last unencrypted part by using Getdataback SW but with no luck in my Bitlocker encrypted partitions. I would appreciate any advice to restore the bitlockerencrypted partitions as I have the password and recovery keys to decrypt and retrieve my data
back.

Softwares I have: Recuva. Handy Recovery. R-Studio. Getdataback. M3 Bitlocker Recovery. Starus Partition Recovery. TestDisk

I can provide the snapshots of the results from recovery softwares should you need them. Thank you very much!

Does the drive have any data? If so is it possible to back it up?

If it is, then you could try the following:

Plug in the drive, switch it on etc.... Let the USB device get recognised.

Now right click Computer>>Manage>>Continue.

Now in the Computer Management window,in the pane on the left, under Storage, click Disk Management.

Right-click and delete the volumes on your external drive. MAKE SURE its the right drive.

http://www.normanbauer.com/2013/07/25/how-to-recover-data-from-a-deleted-bitlocker-enabled-partition/
Now the problem was on the step to create recover.img :
when i type "repair-bde F: E:\recover.img -rp 517253-653510-042988-665027-063393-559515-700700-268211"
I get ERROR: cannot use 517253-653510-042988-665027-063393-559515-700700-268211 (the recovery key) to unlock the input volume, please try different recovery password or recovery key

I am sure that it is the right recovery key.
I also have identifier and password for the bitlocker partition

I recently download a backup program that deleted everything off my external hard drive. There is now basically nothing on my external, so I doubt any data was overwritten. I have a Western Digital 800BB External USB 2 with FAT32. I've tried almost every program I can get a freeware/trial version of and haven't had any luck. A few of them have shown me some of the files I am interested in but are missing quite a few I want. I've also tried restoring a few .avi files that did show up and all I get is a bunch of my mp3 files oddly strung together. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Is it possible to recover deleted files from an external hard drive or flash memory? If so, can someone explain how this is possible? I thought that once you had deleted a file, that was it..?

Not with certainty. It's hit and miss. Don't count on it.

"Deleting" in effect removes the file from the drive's "index" so it can't be found by standard means.

Specialized software may still be able to locate and recover the file if that space on the hard drive has not actually been overwritten and occupied by another file.

Recuva and GetDataBack are two such programs.

Some free software will tell you if the file can be recovered, but may make you pay to actually recover it.

The original file name may be lost.

Then there are professional data recovery services that examine the drive in a laboratory for a high fee--$1000 or more. Such services may have a higher degree of success.

I've fiddled with the free software a few times, but never had much luck.

Hi,

I'm trying to recover lost partition and files from external USB hard drive (Maxtor Portable 250GB).
I'm using disk Internals sofitware and the software finds the files, but when I try to save them on the drive, each time I get a watchdog, or another BOSD error.

Here are the dumps.

Thanks in andvance.

A:BSOD, trying to recover lost partition from external hard

Sorry for the delay in responding. There just aren't that many people who do BSOD analysis, so at times we get a bit overwhelmed!

Do your still need help with this problem?
I will be notified if you reply to this topic and will respond within 48 hours.

Start with these diagnostics on the USB hard drive: Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure
If the hard drive is dead/dying, this could easily be the cause of the BSOD's

I like the GetDataBack software from Data Recovery - Data Recovery Software - RAID Recovery - NAS Data Recovery
It's free to see what you can recover, but it costs $80 (last I checked) to actually recover it.

Hi!

I accidentaly deleted the existing partition on my seagate expansion 2 TB external HDD. I have used active partition which recognises all my folders and files, and saved the scan results. However I cannot seem to restore it as the drive apperas to have bad sectors.

Also ran spinrite level 2, but nothing has come back, to my surprise.

Any advice? I seem to be missing out on a step somewhere and would not liket to proceed doing anything without advice first.

Thanks in advance.

Hi
I feel embarrassed even asking for help with this!
I hace a 250gb external usb drive, that I forgot to remove when re installing xp...and deleted the partition.
It had data on it that I would prefer not to have to tell someone I have lost 3 years of their work?
I have tried using pc recovery, test disk and bart pe...but because their were/are no partitions and no boot sector I have had a fruitless day
Any advice before I just put it all down to a lesson to be learned.....and a format!... would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Gerry

I have an external Western Digital 500 gb HDD and suddently it has stopped working. It shows up on the computer but it says 0 bytes used 0 bytes free. Ive done alot of research on the internet and found out that Testdisk should do the job. But after I've run Testdisk on the harddrive it says No partitions found when I tell it to analyze. I've tried several times and one of the times it went through a huge amount of files instead of the normal about 2 minute scan. This one time it had scanned just 2% after 4 hours so i cancelled it. What should I do now? I have also tried alot of those recovery tools, but none of them seem to be able to find the drive.

Misread the drive label and deleted the partition on an USB external 80GB SATA drive. Nothing else has been done to the drive.

I did this when using Macrium Reflect Rescue disc.

I know I've seen mention of a program that can recover the partition table but I've not found it yet.

I tried EASUS Data Recovery Wizard but that didn't do it. I thought maybe Paragon had something but I've not had any luck so far. Any help appreciated. Thanks

A:I accidently deleted the partition from my external hard drive

Unplug and re plug in the external drive while you are in Disk Management and see if an unknown device appears. You can also leave it plugged in and restart you computer. Do you get the "bing, Bong" USB connection sounds?

Hi,
It has happened to me twice...I accidentally deleted a partition and later found out that my system is dead....The only way I recover out of that is I reinstall Windows and then install grub again to recover the Linux partition. But I feel the delete partition is a very rapid process just taking seconds and in that I don't think files would be deleted, so I feel potentially I can recover the deleted partitions including the boot partition. But I don't know how to do it. Also now when the boot partition is deleted and the system is not booting up what should be done to recover the system and data?
Thanks in advance,
-pkd

i try to backup my laptop data using system image recovery.. In the process, the system told me that 'the backup could take up to 16 GB of disc space.' So, i just create another partition (17 GB) on my external hard disc as a backup location. The process went smoothly. But unfortunately, all my external hard disc partition has been deleted and there is only one partition (RECOVERY 31.9GB ) that include recovery data is created.. Is it any way that i can apply to get back my deleted partition?

A:System image recovery has deleted my external hard drive partition

Hi Fuadansari

Can you please tell us the manufacturer and the model of the hard drive that was overwritten.

I've done that process so I think that I understand what happened. Is it an Acer laptop?

The most important thing at this point is that you DO NOT WRITE ANYTHING TO THE AFFECTED DRIVE. That means do not format it or do anything that may alter the data that is currently on it.

James
