Internet Explorer Proxy Exception - Syntax format for covering subdomains?

Q: Internet Explorer Proxy Exception - Syntax format for covering subdomains?

Hi.
Can anyone tell me the right format for a Proxy Exception to cover a domain with subdomains? There are several examples covering the use of wildcards -
like this MS article:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd361953.aspx
The "Enter a wildcard at the beginning of an Internet address..." example does not cover the useage of subdomains :-(
a.b.c.microsoft.com

Do I use\ set the proxy exception to "*.*.*.microsoft.com" or is "*.microsoft.com" enough to cover all the a.b.c subdomains?

Preferred Solution: Internet Explorer Proxy Exception - Syntax format for covering subdomains?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Internet Explorer Proxy Exception - Syntax format for covering subdomains?

Hi,
As the document states, using a wildcard at the beginning of an Internet address, IP address, or domain name to bypass servers
with a common ending. For example, use "*.example.com" to bypass any entries ending in ".example.com" (such as "some.example.com" and "www.example.com").

So I think *.microsoft.com is enough to cover all the subdomains.

Here's a question I can't seem to answer. The company I work for uses a remote web site and email host. I'm not sure whether that's relevant. MS2000 OS server, XP workstations - that's what we run at the office. I have a link on the web page to the "webmaster". (No, it isn't me, I refuse to take credit for a tool-generated remote site). The link works fine from my house and from the office, I assume from anywhere EXCEPT when our portables are connected to another LAN. (We go out on job sites, disconnect our proxy and disable our firewall, and plug into theirs.) At these sites, we get a message from the link saying the server can't be reached. Can anyone explain this to me? Thank you in advance-

Says " Can send a report to development centre for further investigation". Did that but of course still can't open Internet Explorer.

What does " 3rd Party Module " mean?

How can this be fixed so that Explorer will open?

Last week my computer had a virus that I successfully removed using Malwarebytes. Since then I have been unable to access the internet using my default browser Google Chrome (instead I receive a 'This Webpage is not available.' message with the error: Error 102 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED): Unknown error.

Or with internet explorer where the following message is received: Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage.

Yet it works fine with Firefox. I then tried signing in via Windows Live Messenger where it failed and upon doing the connection troubleshooter received an exclamation mark next to the proxy and key ports sections.

Is there any way for me to fix it so that I can have normal internet access? One major problem right now is that I cannot even upload pictures via Photobucket or even e-mail where Google Chrome gives the message: Attachment failed. This may be due to a proxy or firewall.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hullo Tech Support Guy forum members!

So I've been having this issue for a while and decided that it's finally time I went and found a solution to fixing it.

A quick search in both these forums and Google in general didn't bring up anything relevant--I may have been using wrong keywords of course--but I figured I'd post here and see if anyone can readily help me out!

Here is the issue (click to view full):

As you can see, in explorer, for some reason, if I have Thumbnails chosen as my file viewing method, the Thumbnail will cover up the file name. This is rather irritating, as might be evidenced by the second screenshot. Obviously, how am I to know which file is which if I can't see the image, nor read its name?

I've attempted fixing it already by going to: "[Personalize] > [Window Color and Appearance] > [Open classic appearance properties for more color options] > [Advanced...] > [Icon Spacing (Vertical)]" and then modifying the value to something greater, but it has no effect at all; doesn't move the icons, nor get them to stop covering each other up.

Anyway, any and all assistance would be terrific, and thank-you for taking a look at this!

PS: This overlap issue occurs in Windows Explorer, [Open], [Save], and other dialog boxes. Pretty much anywhere where there is a Thumbnail viewing mode.

Hi,

See if switching to Classic theme and then back to the original theme helps. If that does not work, follow these steps:

Press WinKey+R to bring up the Run menu.
Type the following command and hit ENTER:

CMD /C REG QUERY "HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics" |CLIP

The output is copied to the clipboard. Paste the data along with your reply.

I seem to recall that when you change the proxy settings for Internet Explorer, it's not just IE you are changing. IEs proxy settings are somehow the proxy settings for other apps and the OS as well. Can anyone confirm this? What connections are affected if I add a proxy in IE?

A:Internet Explorer Proxy Setting

The proxy settings in Internet Explorer preferences are for IE and any system function that needs Internet access, such as Windows Update. In a large network going through a company proxy server is often the only way to access the Internet. Many applications choose to use these settings while others have their own configuration options. Many will use the system setting by default but provide the means to override this. Applications are free to do whatever they want regarding proxy servers.

I repaired a laptop for a friend who was missing 1 year of MS updates and had expired virus program. Computer was loaded with viruses. Using ProcessExplorer and a host of the usual virus removal tools it appears that the machine was cleaned when I worked on it and appears to be now. Problem is that a proxy keeps getting added to Internet Explorer. This was the situation before and after he used the computer for about 2 weeks, it reappeared again.

Am I wrong to suspect it having something to do with his unsecured WiFi router? Could someone with an infected computer be tapping in and re-infecting his laptop ? I have a HiJackThis file ready to post if someone is willing to assist me with this. There is an entry about a Proxyoveride that seems suspicious.

Hello,

I was wondering, is there a way to apply settings to Internet Explorer to only proxy ip's in a list. So basically if I have 123.456.1.1 and 123.456.1.2. I only want to have 123.456.1.1 and 123.456.1.2 proxied, anything else that is browsed would be unproxied and go directly to the internet. I suppose it does not have to be in Internet Explorer, it just has to be a system wide setting.

Thanks,

Hi,
We are setting up our Windows 7 PC's to use a proxy server for Internet access, as part of this we are ticking the bypass proxy for local addresses check box and entering the required server names.
What we are seeing though is if the servername has a hyphen in it's name it seems to split it over two lines., for example if the address web-mail.domainname.com is not the first in the line it gets split at the hyphen for example:
mailserver.domain.com;web-
mail.domain.com
Is this just a display issue? Or is there a problem with using hyphens in the servername?
Thanks,

No.

Each application will have it's own proxy settings. Some, such as Firefox, will have the option of using system settings but this must be manually selected. Others will require manual proxy settings.

I went on a vacation recently and came back to discover that my housesitter messed my computer up. I got rid of it, but then I could not get on the internet. I finally discovered a post about unchecking "Use a proxy server for your LAN", so I unchecked it and was able to access the internet. However, whenever I try to google anything, it takes me to different "search" websites instead of linking me directly to the site I want. Or, it will send me to a website that's trying to sell me something and I have to completely close IE down. This is getting really old, and I don't know how to fix it. Woops! I posted this in tips section. Reposting here. Sorry.

I tried to find info in forum on this but couldn't.
I started out with Internet Explorer (5.) after re-istalling Win98 which worked very well and loaded quickly. Then I downloaded Netscape but did not make it my default(?).
After that, IE became slow to load and now I get the message "detecting proxy settings" and I ususally lose patience and click on home button which works but it's still so slow. I'm on DSL. I use both Netscape and Internet Explorer to view how my html appears when working on my site.
Any suggestions for this problem and what the heck does detecting proxy settings mean.
Thanks, Marianne

A:Internet Explorer: detecting proxy settings

I don't have DSL, just regular DUN. Does DSL create a DSL folder like DUN has? Just curious.

I would check the settings in IE, Tools>Internet Options>Connections>Settings, to see if Use a proxy server is checked. If so, uncheck it, and test IE. If not, do you have a site that you can look at for the DSL FAQ's?

Which browser do you want to be your default?
To make Internet Explorer the default Tools>Internet Options>Programs>Place a checkmark at the bottom of the page for Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser otherwise, uncheck it to make another browser the default.

Hi,
I'm facing a strange problem on a lot of Windows machines at my company: the Internet Explorer proxy settings keeps changing.
The proxy settings are being set by a Domain GPO, but on several machines the proxy settings revert back do "Automatically detect settings" from time to time. I'm pretty sure that the GPO is rightly configured. I just need to run
gpupdate /force to correct the proxy settings. And all machines have a up-to-dated antivirus software installed.
Now the strange thing: while using Procmon to find out which process changed the AutoConfigURL registry key, I found that
iexplore.exe process executed by itself a RegDeleteKey command to clear this key.

I've tried disabling several add-ons, but the problem is still happening. Does anyone know if there is a way to discover "what" inside IE is removing the proxy configurations? Or if something is invoking IE to do this nasty job? :P
Tks

A:Internet Explorer keeps changing proxy settings

Actually I found out what happened.
Here in Brazil almost every bank and financial institution demand us to install a security plugin to help on protecting their internet banking access. These plugins work almost independently, they update by themselves and take any necessary action without
warning the user.
And that's what happended with us: one of the most used internet banking by the employees updated its security plugin automatically, and this new version was checking if the proxy configured in IE was suspicious. Sadly, for some reason it considered
our proxy address as a threat and removed it using the RegDeleteKey command. Just some minutes after we put back the proxy address, the plugin removed it again.
This loop lasted for almost two weeks. After figuring out what was happening, I have contacted the support personel of this bank. They knew that it was a known issue, and executed a remote action to downgrade their little monster, which
solved the problem.

Last week, I downloaded a game but it put several other "programs" on my computer which were a real pain. Using Malwarebytes, I removed the programs and my computer is now pretty much back to normal.

However, something else that found its way onto my computer are proxy settings for each browser, basically preventing me from accessing the Internet. With Firefox, this wasn't too much of a problem because I just un-checked the Proxy settings and I can now use it again (I am using Firefox to type this thread).

However, unchecking the proxy settings makes absolutely no difference with Internet Explorer because it just "checks" iself again straight away. So I go to Internet Options --> Connections --> LAN settings --> uncheck proxy server and then click "OK".

Then as soon as I go back to LAN settings, proxy server is checked again. It is an endless loop that cannot be solved simply by unchecking the proxy server box. There is something more sinister at play here.

Anyone know how I can go about finding out the cause of this problem and rectifying it?

Thanks.

So I go to Internet Options --> Connections --> LAN settings --> uncheck proxy server and then click "OK".

Do you complete this by ticking the Top Left Box (Automatically Detect Settings) then click APPLY and then OK > OK to exit the area ??

If you just untick the Proxy and click OK it will not APPLY or stay unticked.

Just an observation on the way you have written it.

If you think it is Malware related, we can also look at that ..........

Hi,
Uninstall Chrome,
Then Reset Internet explorer and see if the issue repeats,
See a tutorial here to Reset Internet explorer,

After Resetting ie9 or 10,
I would add this to the tutorials process

Hi All,
We are facing a issue with Internet Explorer Proxy exception. We are having a AD Domain for organisation with name Domain.com and lot of websites are created for intranet users with this domain name. We have configured the IE settings in all desktops to
exclude *.domain.com from proxy.
Now the problem is that there are certain external websites also created with same domain extension. The users are facing issues while accessing these websites from LAN as the domain is exempted in Proxy.
there is a possibility that we can remove *.Domain.com from proxy exception and add specific websites but that is very complicated as there are many such websites and it will take lot of time to collect that
information and configure.
As the number of Internet websites is very less, is there a way that I keep the proxy exception as it is and add configure specific websites to open via proxy.

Hi all,
Can anyone please supply me with links or information on best practice for configuring IE Proxy Exceptions? I'm thinking about the syntax and methods for the actual exceptions list, not how you get the settings to endpoints.
I have a few questions and over the years have seen some articles giving advice, but I'd like a definitive answer to queries like:

Is it better to use IP addresses/subnets or domain names?Does the syntax of wildcards matter? For example: *domain.com vs *.domain.com?
Thanks

Does anyone know what the max characters are for the proxy exception list in IE6/7? I found it for 4 and 5 but not 6 or 7. I am running into a wall with ours and need to find a different and possibly free solution.

We have too many things in our proxy exception list and it causes it not to work. I have more that I have to add in there but it stops working at a certain point. Are there any linux solutions that we could run on a VM to get rid of it in IE altogether?

Thanks,

Matt

Hi everyone,

Here is my issue, my computer is functioning ok except for internet explorer. I am able to google and search things but when I try to enter a number of different sites (such as the malwarebytes download page) I receive a message that says "the proxy server isn't responding." "Check your proxy settings 127.0.0.1:8877." When I go into internet options --> Connections----> Lan Settings, the "user proxy server for your lan" is checked and greyed out. I have run malwarebytes which did not fix the issue. Someone mentioned checking a proxy setting in regedit which was set to 1, when I change it to 0 as I was recommended, It did not fix the issue and simply reverted to 1. Im not sure if that is relevant at all but this issue is quite frustrating and any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Avast and Malwarebytes don't pick up anything, rebooted in Safe Mode and removed the proxy settings again which hasn't changed again upon reboot but would like to be sure I am clear of or don't have any other infections. I don't have an issue with Firefox which is my default browser.

This Windows 7 PC recently had an infection. I've run Malwarebytes and a few other things, and the infection seems to be gone. However, an issue remains:

When attempting to browse with Internet Explorer, any URL I request (www.google.com, www.yahoo.com) gives an error page that says, "The proxy server isn't responding." The given proxy address is pointing at localhost. I am able to browse in Firefox, but I need Internet Explorer to work as well.

I cannot disable the "Use proxy server for your LAN" setting under Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN settings.

I do not have the knowledge to resolve this problem. Please help. Thank you.

Having a strange problem with a new proxy exception that I am trying to insert on our users computers. Our Proxy exceptions are pushed out through group policy registry edit and it has been working for ages.

However I am trying to put in a new exception but noticed as soon as I add the / after the domain to try specify the subdomain it kills the internet for everything apart from that one site. so for example it is site.domain.com/portal

If I just add the site.domain.com then it doesn't work (wifi captive portal). But if I add it then it works... except it breaks all other web pages.

Any suggestions?

Hi

Some of the users on our site are experiencing a problem where the exceptions list within the Lan Connections Proxy settings is found to be empty after a restart.

At first I thought it may have been down to a profile issue (mandatory) but this is not the case. The profiles are not roaming or mandatory.

Does anyone have any idea's?

Its not something that always happens, they can happily work for 3 or 4 days with the exceptions staying stored, then suddenly they are gone.

Any help would be appreciated

Without going to some sort of CIA or 007 level, how can I do a more comprehensive cleanup of traces of internet surfing than what IExplore offers (internet/options...etc)?

I have reason to believe that someone got into some illicit stuff while browsing my computer and I'd like to make sure all traces of it are completely gone.

I've heard all the horror stories about (some say) never being able to fully delete or clean up things in a way that an expert can't resurrect them. What's the closest to that I can get?
