Q: Laptop only works with the charger inserted but the charger ...

Hi,My laptop won't hold a charge. I have replaced the battery and charger. The only time it works is when the charger is inserted into the laptop but even though it's plugged in it won't charge and will shut down immediately after the charger is removed. Please help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi! I have 4 years old Lenovo Yoga Ideapad 13.  The problems started couple weeks ago, when the computer wouldn't run or start up without being plugged in. I followed some other people's advice and got a new battery. It seemed to fix to problem for while. Now few weeks after the same problem stands with the new battery. It won't start or run, but when plugged in it says the battery is 100% and charging.   I tried checking if the charger isn't working, but it charges all fine on my other Yoga, which has the same charger model. So please note that this isn't the common problem that is seen here on the forums, that the battery doesnt charge. I'm pretty frustrated, as this problem persists even though I changed the battery. Anyone have ideas? I figured it could have something to do with the battery wire connecting battery to the motherboard, but there doesn't seem to be any defects or loose wires.  However, I tried taking off the battery connection wire when plugged in, and then I get the message "No battery detected" instead of the regular "100% Fully charged". Any help is appreciated.

Asus UX31E,x64 Windows 7 Home Premium(I also had ultimate before reformatting)

I have an ASUS UX31E. Pretty much since I first got it I have been experiencing this problem.
The problem being that occasionally when I remove or insert the charger into the laptop, it freezes. By completely freezing I mean screen freezing and the only option being to hold down the power button to force a power down.

It only happens occasionally though, not every time I remove or insert the power cable. Sometimes maybe a few times a day or even a week.
There isnt really any immediate or obvious similarity in what I am doing at the time of freezing although I have a suspicion it could be to do with the graphics card as it most happens when i am full screening something.

I have reformatted a bunch of times and this is still a problem, so i suspect its hardware. But when I phoned the ASUS customer service they said that the engineers would have to be able to recreate the problem.
I dont know what exactly triggers it! So i have to find out before sending it to get repaired!!

Dear Amishra,

I am encountering the exact same issue as you have described. I'd like to know whether you have managed to resolve this matter or is it an ongoing issue? Any advise you can give me to help me get to the bottom of the fault would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

My Dell Inspiron 17R 5720 doesn't recognize charger any more. And unfortunately my warranty expired 2 month ago.It was plugged in and working in the morning, but then in the afternoon I noticed that it was running on the battery only. It wont start without battery (just charger plugged in).
1. So here what I have done to debug. Me and my brother, we have purchased the same Dell laptops at the same time a year and a bit ago. This is why for a debugging purposes it was good.I took my charger and plugged in to his computer. And it works. Definitely not the charger issue I guess. And when I plug charger in to my computer, green light is still on the charger. And I have the original charger that came with the laptop.
2. Now, laptop works on the battery only, so this means that motherboard is working. I guess.
3. Next thing I did was unplugged charger and removed the battery from the laptop. Then I pushed and hold "Power" button for 45 seconds to discharge a flea charge. Plugged charger back in but laptop wont start.
4. Next I started laptop on the battery, went to BIOS and checked if the charger is recognized in the BIOS. No, it doesn't recognize charger. So, if it is not a charger then what else can it be?
5. Laptop doesn't have any strange smells so I'm not sure if anything happened with the motherboard, but I would assume mother board is ok because it works of the battery.
6. I was thinking updating the BIOS, but I can't, because it wont update whi... Read more

A:Dell Inspiron 17R 5720 doesn't work with charger. Charger is not recognized. Not charger problem.

Hi CJ777,
Thanks for reaching out with your query. You pretty much figured out all points of failure. Good job.
If the adapter is not detected in BIOS, it most likely is an issue with the mother board. In the BIOS set up, AC adapter should show up as 65w or 90w. If the adapter status is 'None' or 'Unknown Device Installed', it indicates that the mother board is not detecting the adapter for which the battery is not getting charged. Once the battery charge drains, I'm sure the adapter will not charge it again. Replacing the system board should resolve this issue.

A few days ago I wanted to start my laptop: nothing happened upon pushing the powerbutton. I connected the charger and tried again, got this error before Windows booted: "HP Battery Alert The system has detected the storage capacity of the battery stated below to be very low [...] Primary (internal) battery 601" I pushed enter to reboot the system and got: "The CMOS Checksum is invalid [...] CMOS reset (502)"  I pushed enter again to reboot the system (since I had no other options). The system started, but the time / date were more than a day behind. Further everything seemed fine, though the battery wasn't charging. Not a bit. After a while I got curious and pulled out the charger, after which the system died instantly. Put the charger back in, got the same errors, and can now only use my laptop when connected to a wallsocket. I didn't have any problems with the battery or the batterylife before the situation above occured. My laptop is out of warranty since the end of january, but I think this is unacceptable for a ?1400 euro machine that's 16 months old. It's not like it was used very intensely either, I use it as an internet / writing / photo-editing machine for when I'm travelling for work. Is this a known issue? I couldn't find anything that gave the same error codes on the forum, but maybe I'm not searching with the right criteria. Any help would be very much appreciated, thanks!

A:Battery failed, laptop works on charger

@CasperH Welcome to HP Support Forum. Normally the CMOS battery can "live" up to 5 years or more. Could be some internal error but why for both batteries only. This is a mystery. For main battery, please use the following instructions to check            https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c04700771 If failed, you need to replace battery. Regards.

Dear community,I have recently disassembled my laptop in order to clean the dust. As soon as I assembled it back the computer started perfectly. However, it was not charging. It isn't one of the "Plugged but not charging" issues as the computer is not detecting that the charger is plugged in.I disassembled the laptop again to check if any connections were not plugged in correctly. Everything looked fine. It's not my first time disassembling laptops. The light on the charger port does not light up when the charger is plugged in. However, it is flashing white as the battery is critically low. When I press power button it flashes amber color. I have tried to remove the battery and start the laptop but it won't start.Does anyone have any idea of what the issue could be?Thank you

When I plug the charger in the message on the battery icon on the bottom toolbar reads as "73%, plugged in, not charging". Obviously the laptop is recognising the charger (i.e "plugged in") but it is not allowing the battery to charge.
I have installed every update on the computer and I have recently searched for any outstanding BIOS updates. The system seems to suggest there is a BIOS update to be installed yet when I try to install it the system says that it cannot detect a charger, and won't complete the update, or it won't complete the update without a charger plugged in in the first place. It's a no-win situation. The computer and charger are only 14 months old so this is very unsatisfactory. When I remove the battery the computer operates on AC power only, so again the charger is working, it simply won't charge the battery and therefore once the battery runs down to 0, which it will eventually, I will be limited to using AC power only.
If I restart the laptop with the charger plugged in it diverts me to a warning page saying that the charger is not recognised and I am given the option to go to the BIOS setup, go to diagnostics or to continue. If I choose "continue" it simply returns me to this warning page every time so the only way to power up the laptop is to do so with the AC charger out, and to then plug it in once the system has started so that the battery doesn't drain completely.
Please help.

A:Inspiron 15 5559 charger not charging battery (manufacturers charger being used)

An unrecognized AC adapter will not charge the battery.
First try a new OEM Dell adapter.  If that's also not recognized, replace the DC power jack:
If neither the new adapter nor the DC jack solves the problem, you've got a bad charge circuit - replace the mainboard.

Recently I bought a charger for my HP G61-110SA which was just a replacement adapter. Now yesterday it did something weird. Basically, there are two pictures of the two indicators there are to show whether it is charging, one is on the front and one is next to the port on the side. Basicaally the charger wasnt changing the indicator on the side or the one on screen but the one on the front was working when I turned it on. By default the laptop chages brightness when plgged in but now it sort of brightens a bit (not to the full level as should do) and then goes back to normal. Today the laptop is still doing the same but the front light now only turns on for a few seconds before turning off! I dont know whether it is charging. Is this the laptop or the charger. Any help would be useful, I have attatached the side indicator and the front one

UPDATE: I found a website which said you could turn it off and start without battery but with charger and then turn off and use both. However, I turned it off and removed the battery and it wouldnt charge. Then I put the battery in and it started charging-weird. Also the light on the front doesnt last very long so I am stuck. ANY HELP?

I don't know what's the problem and I would like to fix it, if possible.

Try removing the battery and reinstalling it. it may not be connecting properly or snapped in all the way. Some components have an FRU # on them which is the field replaceable part number. I don't see why the battery cannot be shipped to you anyway. But you need to call Tech Support to process this since the forum is NOT tech support only a forum of users primarily.

I just purchased a replacement battery for my HP Pavilion dv6-7000 laptop to replace my older one. The replacement worked fine for about a week, and now when I have this battery plugged in the computer only works when the charger is plugged into the computer. When the charger is pugged in, the computer does recognize the battery and says that it is fully charged, but when the charger is unplugged the computer dies as if I had removed the battery (or the battery was not plugged in). I have run multiple diagnostic tests such as that in the HP Support Assistant which says that the battery is OK, and the computer can still boot up with the original battery (which just has a decreased capacity). So I do not believe that this is a problem with the computer, but rather with the battery. How can I determine the problem with this new battery and get it to work again?

On the power supply, at the end that plugs into the computer, the connector is cylindrical with a thin metal pin in the middle. That metal pin has broken off but the plug light still goes on when the connector is plugged in. Can I still continue to use the charger or will the computer be damaged? If not, I would appreciate an explanation as I am familiar with electronics. What is the function of the center pin? The plug end has a third prong for ground. Thanks in advance

A:Connector pin broken but charger still works, safe...

If it is still warrantied, you could likely get it replaced as a defective component.Power bricks are inexpensive to replace, and whenever you have any future issue with your ThinkPad, you're always going to wonder whether or not the glaringly missing pin contributed to it.If you live in the USA, it will be easy to replace if you look locally or even order an inexpensive aftermarket model on Amazon. If you really like living on the edge of uncertainty by using electrical devices with broken components then keep on using it.

A:Using a different charger for laptop?

When considering non-original laptop chargers, the voltage needs to match exactly while the current needs to be equal to the original or higher. In your case the current rating for the other charger is fine but the voltage is not correct. It's possible that the laptop has a voltage regulator inside to compensate for the lower voltage but since I have no knowledge of the inner workings of your Lenovo, I can't say whether the 19V is close enough.

i have a dell inspiron 1721 and i keep having the same problem with my charger. i get a new one, from dell.com, and it works great for a couple weeks to a month, but after that i get the same message of "the charger plugged in is not a dell 90wat charger, your operating system will run slower, please plug in a dell 90wat charger." When i got this message the first couple of times i just got a new one thinking i did something wrong, and the charger im using right now is not a dell charger, it's a knock-off one that i got for half the price on a discount website. This charger however did the same exact thing as my dell chargers, it worked great for a few weeks then gave me the message about it not being a dell 90wat charger although it is slighty different because this time it says it is plugged in but not charging.

any ideas what is wrong?

A:laptop charger help

...It's a Dell.
On that same screen it should say how to disable that message. Sometimes you have to update the BIOS to actual be able to get rid of that message or be able to use non-Dell adapters. Latest BIOS is here: http://support.dell.com/support/dow...-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=1&fileid=252216

But if its not charging the battery then there could actually be an issue. Possibly with the charging circuits on the mainboard, or there's possibly something damaging the adapters, like brownouts or surges. Does the jack in the laptop seem loose?

Hi, I have an HP Pavilion g6-2244sa laptop and my charger has broken down, I was looking for another charger to buy and I came across a charger that holds 18.5v but my laptop charger that I previously used was 19.5v. Would I be able to use this charger? Will there be a change in how the laptop charges? Will it damage my laptop?

A:Can I use a 18.5v charger to a 19.5v Laptop?

Some HP laptops actually specifiy a 19.5 volt and an 18.5 volt charger as alternates but the devil is in the details. First, of course, does the "new" charger actually fit in the socket? Can we have the HP part numbers of the two chargers and we can quickly say if they are interchangeable? A new 100% compatible charger can be had for maybe $15 so I can't see any need to run a risk of damaging the laptop.

Is this "newer charger" the battery charging circuit in your laptop or do you actually mean the power supply (AC power cord and AC to DC adapter)? If the former, did you have the work done and do you have a warranty? If the latter I suspect you got the wrong power supply.

I have a laptop in which the charger 'pin' (to plug into laptop) seems bad. It's a bit loose when I wiggle it and when in the laptop, the cord has to be positioned just right for it to charge (it seems to lean the pin to where it can charge). I'm not sure if it's the charger or the port.

The charger (call it #1) is 19V, 2.37a, 45w. I have another charger (#2) (same brand laptop, different, lesser model). The voltage specs are 19v, 1.75a, 33w.

Can I safely use charger #2 to verify weather the problem is the charger or the port for charger #1's laptop?

A:Laptop charger

If the connector from charger #2 fits correctly into the laptop in question, then yes, you can use it for troubleshooting the problem.

I'm a bit confused if it does because I thought this machine had a 65W charger, and the cutout space for a charger inside the box seems to match the 65W size. Can anybody help?

A:What charger originally came with this X1 laptop?

According to ThinkPad X1 Carbon_3rd Gen Platform Specifications both 45W and 65W chargers will work but the latter will recharge the system faster.
Based on the  "CPK UK Linecord45WAC" on your box I'd agree that your system originally came with a 45W charger.

my laptop charger (from dell) makes a high-pitched buzzing noise when i plug it into my laptop.
ive searched the web, but i cant find a satisfactory answer. some say its dangerous, some say its harmless.
so, is it dangerous or not?
i already ordered a new one, just to be sure, its coming tomorrow.

A:laptop charger is buzzing

If it has only recently started doing this then it might be a duff capacitor... is the laptop still under warranty? If so, Dell can be quite good at swapping these things out.

But, I think you've sorted this out now by getting the new adapter.

Should any charger with the same model number work? The model number is ADP-65JH BB

I've been looking around on ebay...I see some with a 2 prong connection and some with 3. Some have slightly different amperage ratings.

Do I need the exact numbers or should any charger with the model number ADP-65JH BB work?

A:Is there anything to I need to know when buying a laptop charger?

Better post all info you can get. Not likely, but possible that 2 chargers with same model number different enough to do harm. Small differences in amperage ratings don't matter, but voltages definitely would, of course. You need to be certain on input voltage and connector types on both ends. You need the right input for your country (which may be indicated by a single letter at the end of the model number).

I am looking to buy a universal laptop charger for my Sony Vaio Flip 14A. I just wanted to get some opinions on whether these are normally safe and if there are any risks associated with buying these?

The original spec of my charger is http://detail.tmall.com/item.htm?sp..._id=&am_id=&cm_id=140105335569ed55e27b&pm_id=

while the one I am looking to buy is here http://detail.tmall.com/item.htm?sp..._id=&am_id=&cm_id=140105335569ed55e27b&pm_id=

My main concern is that while my laptop charger shown output 19.5V = 2.3A, the universal one shows 19.5V = 4.7A. I wonder if this can be an issue?

Would appreciate some opinions.

I have a Satellite C855-21N with a charger of 19 V and 3.42, but my charger doesn't work so I decided to buy a new one, but in the shop only I found one of 19.5 V and 4.62A. So, my question is if I can use that one without danger of damaging someting or not. I read that I can use with more amperes but I'm not sure about the volts. It's only 0.5 V but I'm not sure.

I just bought a new laptop about a month ago now. I noticed the other day that the charger gets really hot. I had it plugged in lastnight charging, while charging I was playing Sims 4. When I shut down, the charger was almost too hot to hold for very long. Now I have had several laptops over the years and never had one get this hot. This can't be normal. The laptop runs great, no errors at all. What should I do?

A:Laptop battery charger getting really hot.

replace it. This is an early sign of a failing AC/DC converter.

So I just bought a used HP dv7 laptop. It came with a Dell charger and was able to charge fine. I use my laptop as my home computer so its always plugged in. Since I always keep it plugged in, I removed the battery so over time it wouldnt kill the battery life.
So everything runs good, but I also like to play games on my laptop. when I do my laptop shuts off. I thought it might be my laptop crashing, but I noticed that the small light on the charger was off. I unplugged the charger from the wall socket and plugged it back in and the light came back on and my laptop powered up. The charger was very very hot. So I pointed a fan at it and played the game again, but it shut off again.
I thought it had to do with the dell charger and the HP laptop, So I bought a brand new HP charger. But it still does the same thing, the charger shuts off.

Is there some settings I have to change? or something wrong with my laptop?
I cant figure it out.

A:My laptop charger keeps shutting off?

Normally in HP Laptops the shutting off of the charger when the battery is fully charged is quite normal. Happens with my HP also but not with Dell Laptop where the charger remains always on.
