I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Do you know if that machine is Win 7 compatible at all, drivers aside?

I wouldn't get frantic about drivers.

Your Windows install disc should have most of them; you might get a few more from Windows Update.

I would go to Dell's website and download your Ethernet (NIC) driver in case Windows doesn't install it. It's the most important driver as you need it to get on the net.

Of course, it wouldn't do any harm to download all possible drivers from Dell, but I wouldn't necessarily install them. See how Windows own drivers do for you.

After you install and get updated, inspect the functionality of your hardware and take a look in Device Manager. If anything is goofy at that time, then look around for other drivers.

My home desktop is connected to a wireless router through AT&T U-verse and it's broadcasting just fine. I can see the name and everything when I try and connect on my laptop but there is always an error that brings me to a troubleshooting screen. I've made sure the password is correct by going to Start-Run, IPCONFIG and then typing my IP address into the address bar in my browser. I dont know what else I can do, I feel like I've tried everything! Help please.

A:Laptop (Win7 Dell Inspiron 1525) won't connect to desktop (XP Dell) wireless router

Sometimes, you need to replace the router.
Sometimes, you can call your service provider and ask them to take a look on line to see if the subscription needs to be refreshed.
But often, all that is needed (despite the fact that it is a lot of work) is to uninstall your existing system, then reboot, and reinstall everything.
You might also find success by looking at your device manager in Windows to see if you have any grey, red, or yellow flags by any related device. That may show you have a permanent hardware failure if you cannot restore it, then you are off to the store or your provider for a new cable modem or router.

Hi All,

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 that has completely died. I'm not sure what happened to it exactly, as there is not evidence of a drop or a spill, but there are no signs of life whatsoever. I took the battery out, and plugged in the adapter. I know the adapter works fine as the little green light comes on when it's plugged in, and I tried it in another laptop in which it worked. When I hit the power button nothing happens. No lights turn on, or flash, no sounds are made...nothing. It's lifeless. I was thinking about just hitting eBay and ordering a new motherboard, but does anyone know if this is the right thing to do? I don't have the $100 bucks to throw down without being certain so I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction.

Thanks

Try the repair option.

There, you should find an option to run Startup Repair. Try that, maybe even more than once.

You should also see an option to open a command window. In that window, run a disk check:

chkdsk /r

Note the results, and in particular, if any bad clusters are found (Bytes in Bad Clusters).

hi everyone... my dell inspiron 1525 that's about two years old, and has had to operate (most of the time, continuously...) under terrible conditions - smothered ventilation and, oven-hot, is now beeping...

...this summer it seemed the battery went (it would not work unless it was plugged in at all times), and then the fan started running nearly constantly and it would be so hot that it would burn my fingers and often shut off (i've got a cooling fan now, but i don't think it's helping, probably too little, too late), and of late i notice that it is sometimes making a soft click-pause-click sound with occasional louder clicks (the sound of a latch being opened/closed) ...although, now i recall that it may have made that sound once in a while, even when it was new, but maybe i never realized that it could have been doing that because it was critically hot and the hard drive was being damaged...
and now finally it has started making an occasional, small but high pitched, single beep that sounds like it's coming from the hard drive. is this a warning alarm that the hard drive is about to die very soon?

i hated having to run my 'baby' under these conditions and know i'm probably fortunate that it has served me for this long

Hello, I am hoping someone can help me as my computer is out of warranty.  On Thursday, my Dell Inspiron 1525 (bought in 2008) running Vista Operating System was working perfectly.  No issues at all.  On Friday morning, I went to turn on the computer and the 2 blue lights on the bottom left (the power and the one beside it) light up, the computer sounds like it is going to boot and then it beeps once and dies.  It will continue to do this over and over every few seconds until I turn off the power manually.
I have tried the trick of taking out the battery and the cord, pressing the power button and then plugging the battery and cord back in, but it still did not work.  The computer will not boot using just the cord (and not the battery) and vice versa.  Does anyone have any ideas on what could be happening or how I could fix this?
Thank you in advance for any help you could offer.

I am helping a friend that has a 18 month old Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop running Vista Home Premium. Her hard drive is failing and it will be necessary to replace the hard drive.

I have been able to go in and use an external hard drive to save all of her picture, docements, etc.

I also saved the restoration partition that was put on the hard drive.

Here is my question. When I install a new hard drive, I assume that I should next install the Vista Home Premium from the included disk. Does it make any sense to reintroduce the restoration partition which I have saved on the hard drive. I could set up the partition when I first install Vista Home Premium.

My thinking is that I then could start the restoration process and thus have the computer installed with all the programs it originally came with.

I would need help with the following:

1) How to set up the restoration partition when I first set up Vista on the new hard drive. I can determine from the size of the files within the partition
how big it should be.

2) How to start the restoration process after I have the files for the restoration partition installed. on the computer. (I know on some computers
you would choose F10 or F11 to start the restoration process!)

3) Is it really worth the bother to go through all of this. I DO HAVE THE VISTA INSTALLATION CD AND THE DRIVERS!!!

Thanks for any and all thoguhts on this. I appreciate all your ideas.

You can run Dell diagnostics on the drive to rule out failure . . if it has failed, you will have to reinstall everything on the new drive.

If they were able to successfully extract the data, you may just need to run chkdsk on the drive to get it back

What's the 7-character service tag number on the sticker of that Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop?

-------------------------------------------------------------

If you've done a hard drive format and clean reinstall of Windows Vista, it needs to be upgraded to SP1 and then to SP2 before you download and install all the post-SP2 updates.

You've obviously done something wrong because it's impossible for the hard drive to fill up from just doing what you say you've done.

My Laptop over heated today and I removed the back plate to gain access to clean out the fan ect... Once I tried to boot the computer up, everything flashed at me like always but then turned off, the screen remained black.
I?ve done a little research via googled and I have tried .....

1) Removing the AC power lead and the battery and switched them about to see if it would resolve, but resulted in the same issue as stated above.
2) Holding the power button down for 10/20 seconds without the laptop having power and with power. Then powering up.
3) I?ve pulled the HDD and the memory as instructed by the Dell support site (When power was disconnected) and booted, switch the memory about and booted a number of time. Everything was re-connected properly.

This is driving me totally mad as I need the laptop due to work and other reasons, I paid £550 about four years ago so it?s no longer under warranty, also none of the settings where changed before the issue began.

I would be grateful for any advice or assistance,So what is the possible issue that I?m having, is my motherboard fried or is it something else?

I had to replace my ac adapter and in the process of taking my laptop apart I managed to break a cable ribbon retaining clip. It's a square shape with only three sides. One side is open. It held the ribbon cable to my multi-media bar (controlling my volume, mute, stop, play, pause, etc.). Does anybody know where I can find these tiny, obscure parts? I tried Dell and got nowhere.

Thanks,

A:Part for Dell Inspiron 1525

I doubt you will find the clip itself for sale but you might find a broken motherboard that has the same type on Ebay.

The clip pushes down on the ribbon to ensure good contact in the socket. If you still have the parts of the broken clip you may be able to glue them together or fit the largest piece and put tape over it to keep it in place.

Hi KristineP42,
Welcome to Dell community,
I am sorry to hear that the system is not working to your satisfaction. In order to help you we need to find out what is it that is causing the system to behave this way, so to isolate this issue I need you to perform a few steps and observe couple of things.
Please run the tests on the system to launch the PSA+ Diagnostics, perform one of the following actions:
Hold down the <Fn> key while pressing the power button.
Turn on the system, press <F12> at the initial Dell? logo screen, and select Diagnostics from the boot menu.
Let me know if it returns any error code.
Also, you can take the system in the BIOS by pressing the f2 key at startup and observe the system there and check if it stays there without restarting.
Let me know your findings. Glad to be of assistance.

Hello all,

I just finished wiping a friends laptop with a fresh copy of Windows XP Pro SP3. A couple days later I went to use it after it installed Microsoft Office 2007 Pro Plus. IT was extremely slow afterwards. Extremely slow means it took 15 minutes just to pull up the Start Menu. I removed all traces of Office and it was still slow so I did a clean install on Windows Vista (Which it shipped with) however the install itself is taking ages as well... Can anyone tell me what has happened??? I am at a loss and I just want this thing to start working again. I have also tried resetting the BIOS back to default settings and still nothing!

Could be a simple hardware problem..make sure everything in bios is reading correctly (amount of ram, CPU clock speed, etc).

If its not the above, IDK. new OS would be first suggestion, but apparently you did that already.

My four year old tossed my Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop across the room today, and since then, it isn't booting.

It reaches Vista's loading screen, where you see the moving bar and "© Microsoft Corporation," but it doesn't go past that point. Initially, I heard a clicking sound.

I tried booting it in Safe Mode, but the same thing happened. I also tried booting it from the Vista DVD, but got the same problem.

I took the hard drive out and looked at it, and couldn't see any visual damage.

I ran the Windows Diagnostics tool, and got the following error code:

Error code 0142

Error code 2000-0142

Hard drive 1 - self test unsuccessful status 79

I've seen reports of people having similar problems that were fixed by a replacement hard drive, but I'm wondering if I can get the data off of this one first. Is it worth trying to find an external USB drive enclosure, or is the drive too damaged?

And how can I get my laptop running again? It's not under warranty anymore.

Thanks for any help!

I would buy an external wd passport harddrive.
Take the hard drive out of your laptop...2 screws on botom of the unit.
set it down and take a picture to remember the orientation of the black plastic pull cover.
Take the wd external apart..it will slide out..its a little tricky the first time.
now switch the covers between the 2 hard drives and put the usb adapter on the old hard drive and slide evevything back in the case about 90 percent of the way.
push the hdd into the laptop...be sure to put the pull handle back on.
Use you windows dvd and put on windows
then the drivers from the drivers and utilities disk

now plug in your old had via the usb port and see if you can read the files...alot of times you can recover many of the files

Note..when booting the vista dvd
hit power start tapping f12 light and fast
then select the dvd rom from the list to boot from

Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 which has gone haywire. I was using it a few days ago when it just shut down for no reason. Upon booting it went to a black screen with a white blinking cursor.

I have tried to boot it into safe mode = not working at all.
I have tried to use recovery console = not working at all.

The only F-keys working are F2 and F12. Neither of which are helping in repairing my laptop.

I tried and tried again to reboot but nothing. I then left it overnight thinking it might have booted by the time I got back to it, but nothing.

Using my daughters laptop I downloaded Hirens boot cd, had a look through that and run an antispyware app. Rebooted and still nothing. Tried to boot from hard drive, black screen. I don't know what else I could use from the disc which might help.

A friend had a copy of spotmau bootable cd. I tried that and running the emergency kit section and then windows recovery I went through each option one by one. However it failed on the registry recovery.

I could have used the registry recovery but I have no idea where the registry file would be, so I left it at that.

There's also an option to recover from an image file. But I can't get it even though there is a Dell backup image on there.

I have the Dell recovery console built in but it ain't happening because I can't access it, it's just this black screen.

Can anyone help in getting me up and running again?

Has anyone ever experienced/solved the problem of having the machine spontaneously shut itself off, as if it were running on battery power and ran out of power, even when plugged in? It usually re-starts after a minute without much concern, but sometimes lately it won't. I eventually figured out if I remove the battery pack, unplug the machine, plug it back in, and restart it will turn back on. Then, the battery goes back in and it's fine for a while. I'm afraid at some point it won't restart at all. I'd love some advice. Thanks, TJD8

It still does the same thing. I couldn't find any diagnostic for the blinking lights (the keyboard lights do not light up). I tried re-seating the RAM and anything else I could think of, but nothing works. Does this mean my motherboard is fried? How can I tell if it is that, or something else? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hi this is from the manual

Solving Problems
Power Problems
If the power light is off — The computer is
either turned off or is not receiving power.
• Reseat the power cable into both the
power connector on the computer and the
electrical outlet.
• If the computer is plugged into a power strip,
ensure that the power strip is plugged into
an electrical outlet and that the power strip
is turned on. Also temporarily bypass power
protection devices, power strips, and power
extension cables to verify that the computer
turns on properly.
• Ensure that the electrical outlet is working
by testing it with another device, such as a
lamp.
• Check the AC adapter cable connections. If
the AC adapter has a light, ensure that the
light on the AC adapter is on.
If the power light is solid white and the
computer is not responding — The display may
not be connected or powered on. Ensure that
the display is properly connected and then turn
it off then back on.
If the power light is blinking white — The
computer is in standby mode. Press a key on the
keyboard, move the pointer on the trackpad or a
connected mouse, or press the power button to
resume normal operation.
If the power light is solid amber — The
computer has a power problem or an internal
device malfunction. For assistance contact Dell,
see “Contacting Dell” on page 50.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525. I have it connected to a samsung lcd tv through the hdmi port to watch movies. Yesterday I connected the hdmi lead but the tv didn't detect a signal. So I tried a system reboot. The screen on the laptop lights up as in you can see the back light working but thats the limit to it. The laptop sounds like it is loading fine. dvd drive running hard drive working lights flashing etc. Anyone with any clues as to what the problem could be, and a possible solution would be very much appreciated.

A:Dell inspiron 1525 screen not working HELP!!

Tony, so the problem is your laptop is turned on, but the laptop screen isn't displaying an image?

Disconnect the HDMI cable, first. Look across your top row of keys on the keyboard. Tap the key with an icon on it that looks like a computer screen, then wait a second and see if your screen lights up It may be the F8 key, not sure. On some models you have to hold down the Fn key while you tap the F8 key. That toggles your LCD screen on and off.

I cannot really give you a lot of specs & details on it, as I'm really inept about computers.

Basically it starts ok to begin with, fans working and you can tell it's working. Then it gets to the vista style welcome screen with the word 'welcome' and a small blue circle to show its loading.

Then a very alarming sort of ticking sound starts in the lower left side of the keyboard, below the fan?, and thats as far as it will go or a blue screen will appear telling me they've encountered an error and will restart my computer. Only when it restarts to get the same result.

I have the OS on a disk if I need to re-install it, and a friend who is of reasonable talent with computers (But away on holiday)

As I'm said I'm very sorry I cannot give you any more information as I'm not well gifted with computers (I'm an aspiring EMT if that helps any :S). I was on MSN when it froze, I left it for ages and then held in the power button to restart. Then na-dah.

A:Dell Inspiron 1525 will not start properly

Well, you're getting past the POST test where the BIOS checks for hardware errors. The ticking noise could be a few things, really. It could be a hard drive failure, where you have a hard drive that works to boot but can't read much farther. You could have bad RAM but I'm not sure it would account for the noise. It's also possible you just have some corrupted system files.

The easiest way to do this is to try Safe Mode. On your next reboot, tap F8 several times until you get a list of start up options. Select Safe Mode and tell us if it loads this time. We'll go from there...

Hey, computer geeks -

Someone...PLEASE help me.

Last week, I foolishly welcomed a malicious virus onto my computer. Not even Avast detected it. To make a long story short, I backed up and reinstalled Vista. Everything seems to working fine with the clean installation...except for two things that are about to make me commit homocide.

1) My cursor is jumping around the screen when I type like a crazy mofo. Never did this prior to the clean installation. How do I get this to stop?! I can't even type a basic email without having to reposition the cursor a couple of times.

2) I have Open Office installed on my computer. When I first start up my computer, I can open my various documents and spreadsheets just fine. But after my computer has been on for awhile, I then WON'T be able to open them. So the program is not launching properly. I have to restart the whole computer to be able to open the documents again. I even tried uninstalling Open Office and reinstalling it, but it doesn't seem to have helped. Again, this problem didn't start occuring until after the clean install of Vista.

Please, geeks, I know someone out there must be able to help me. I mean, you don't get paid, you sit in front of a screen all day, you're socially, a sensation. Thanks so much in advance.

I have this notebook and after three years of usage it became so slow, it would take 30 min to start.

Last week I formatted its hard drive and reinstalled Windows Vista.

As soon as I went on the Internet my computer crashed again.
Another complete reinstall and another crash after I tried to access the web. This time the crash happened while I was attempting to install Avira !

Thinking I may have a hardware problem, I did a third complete reinstall and started to use the computer off line. It works perfectly! No crashes in a whole week.

My question is, what is the antivirus software I need and how can I install it off line.

As a second question, I noticed that a group of drivers is missing under "Other device". The group includes 3 drivers. There is no way for me to figure out which this "other device" is so that I can download the drivers for it. I know I installed all recommended drivers from my resource CD.

A:Dell Inspiron 1525 and Windows 7's XP Mode

Here is a link for your notebook drivers. But unfortunately it doesn't list windows 7, hence no windows 7 drivers either.

Now about replacing CPU; I am unable to comment on it because Inspiron 1525 comes in so many flavors; you are better off consulting with Dell anyway as you commented about warranty over there. Hence, if the thing is under warranty don't void it by fiddling around with it; instead take it to dell and ask them what they can do with it; it may cost bit more; but you will retain your warranty.

Also you may have to update your notebook's bios for a new CPU (if the motherboard supports it in the first place)

However, having said that, I am not sure what is the dell's policy about replacing CPUs or memory etc. in your locality.

Lastly, download CPUZ and check motherboard type /revision / bios info etc. I believe you can upgrade to C2D easily if the Motherboard model you gave me is correct.

HI. Im looking to get a laptop and have decided to get either a Dell inspiron or Vostro (in small business section of site.) Basically I've run into this snag:

Do I get the inspiron with integrated graphics (intel X3100), or the vostro with nvidia 8400M 256mb.

At first it seems like an obvious choice to take the nvidia, but reading through some stuff im now not sure how much of an advantage it would be. I can get fairly similar spec for everything else on each, although if i get vostro i can get 3Gb ram same price. Here are the main specs, both laptops at roughly the same price

Inspiron: £449

Core 2 duo T5550 1.83GHz processor (667MHz bus, 2MB cache)
2Gb DDR2 ram
250 Gb Hard drive
15.4" widescreen with true life and integrated webcam
Intergrated graphics (X3100 i think)

or

Vostro: £469

Core 2 duo T5670 1.8GHz processor (800MHz bus, 2MB cache)
3Gb DDR2 ram
250 Gb Hard drive
15.4" widescreen
256 Mb Nvidia 8400M GS (64 bit) graphics

So Basically, vostro has superior graphics (i think??), and for only £20 more I can get an extra 1Gb ram, at expense of webcam and truelife.

What do you think?

A:Dell Inspiron 1525 or Vostro 1510?

I would go for the vostro

Hello, i recently installed a new copy of WIndows Vista 32 bit. The cd came directly from Dell so I know the program isent corrupt.
After i download Vista on the computer and the computer is running I can insert the drivers disk and all that comes up is a HUGE list of...stuff, and checkmarks by a few hundred of them it seems like.
Anyway, It seems like my computer isent even recognizing that i have a wireless card or even an ethernet port.
Because i connect to my router via Ethernet and nothing happened.
This is what the screen looks like in My Device's menu

i dont know what to do.

A:Dell Inspiron 1525 Vista-32 No Internet

You need to install those drivers specifically from the driver disk. The check marks will help you find them. It looks like you mainly need the chipset drivers, both wired and wireless network drivers and your video driver from the image.

I have purchased a new power adapter and battery, my issue is that the system continues to think that there is something wrong with it. When you bring the batt meter up it states that the sys is plugged in but not charging. Not sure if it is related but the only problems in device manager is associated to BASE SYSTEM DEVICE location PCI BUS2 device 9, function 2 & 3 w/a physical device object name:\device\NTPNP_PCI10023 & 24. I've read some have gone from a 60hz adapter to a 90hz, some say update bios, but I have tried everything that I can think of but the 90hz adapter. PLEASE IF ANYONE CAN ASSIST IN THE DIAGNOSIS WEATHER WANTED OR UNWANTED KNOWLEDGE IS GLADLY APPRECIATED

THANKS

A:dell inspiron 1525 plugged in not charging

You mean 60 watt and 90 watt?

Only thing I can suggest other than updating the bios, is to reset the cmos, but on that model requires you to totally disassemble the laptop to remove the cmos battery, thanks Dell.

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins1525/en/SM/coinbatt.htm#wp1179839

Resetting the bios with the battery and AC adapter unplugged may allow it to start charging again, a slim possibility.

Sometimes it is a defect with the motherboard.

One of my friends' laptop is being a bit temperamental. It's a relatively new Dell Inspiron 1525 with Windows Vista Home Premium (32bit) SP1 installed. Anyways, the computer turns on normally but when the OS goes to load it gets stuck at a black screen with just the mouse cursor moving around. Safe Mode doesn't work and the same thing happens if I select "Last Good Config that Worked." I've seen this problem before with updates, but my friend said it was working fine and he didn't install anything.

I popped in the Dell OS disk so I could try a repair/recovery but that was unsuccessful as well. The setup program didn't detect any problems with the OS and there were no restore points to revert back to. I have no idea what the computer is doing when it sits on the black screen. There is a little bit of HDD activity here and there but I think that's the normal behavior. Any ideas? I'm sort of at a loss here...

Thanks in advance for any help!

A:Dell Inspiron 1525 not booting (Vista)

If I get a Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 OEM disk can I perform a repair install without being able to boot the OS normally? I can't do anything with this computer at the moment--it just sits and does nothing. I slaved the HDD to another system and was able to read and write normally, so it's definitely a problem with Vista. Problem is I have no idea what is causing the computer to hang so I can't pull any errors and startup repair says there's no problems.
