I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'v carelessly reset my system (win 10 ent. LTSB, 64bits) due to some problem. But I forgot to take backup of some important files (in my desktop) & bookmarks (of chrome, firefox & srware iron browsers) . Are there anyway to recover those files+bookmarks? or Can I have a rollback to pre-reset state?

Hi everyone,

I recently came back home from a long weekend. I turn on my computer and no problems at all. I checked some emails and looked on facebook.

I have this random hard drive I wanted to check out to see if could use it. I didn't want to get a virus so I disconnected my two hard drives that are already in my tower. I was going to use a linux disc to boot up and see if the disc could even spin and if so, I would have wiped it then. Turned out I couldn't find my linux disc so I took the drive out and hooked mine back up. I went to start it and apparently I got the cables crossed and it said to reboot and use proper boot device. I switched the wires while the computer was still powered on. Probably shouldn?t have. The computer turned on like normal except one major problem..... it reset back to 2014. I lost everything from then up to now. Emails on thunderbird, bookmarks, files, etc...

Back in 2014 I had windows installed on a 60GB SSD and it was filling up quick so I got a 120GB SSD. I had transfered that 60GB partiton to the new 120GB SSD. It worked totally fine up until today. Windows now thinks it`s still in the 60GB drive. It`s not showing the correct drive size of 120GB. It only shows 60GB.

This is one strange and frustrating situation. Can anyone help with my problem? Please and thanks

You can also go into the bios and reset the time and date.
Then check and correct Windows 7 time and date.
I have had Linux play games with the time and dates.

Another possibility could be a faulty motherboard battery. Bios battery.

So, my problem started earlier this week when I tried to scan my Hard Drive using my antivirus system. Never do that.
My Vaoi laptop froze at 27% during the scan, and I had to manually shut it off (hold down the power button) and then restart it. Well, it started the scan again, and got stuck again, so I had to restart it again. The next time, I was able to read this millisecond long message about how to "cancel dskchk by pressing any key", so I did, but then it just took forever to load and opened on an error message saying that windows couldn't load, or something along those lines.

Eventually, after figuring out how to open safe mode, I tried to use a Restore point (which didn't work), Refresh the System (which couldn't complete), do a lot of maintenance scans (none of which helped), consult the internet off of my friend's computer (where I heard about the windows.old folder), and then I was finally forced to use the Vaio Recovery Tool and do an emergency backup onto my new External Hard Drive... It semi-worked, but a lot of my files weren't passed over to the external drive, and I'd like to get them back.

The files I care about are mostly image and document files (jpg, bmp, Word, and Notepad) and the folders they were in were all on my Desktop, but I don't know how to get them back. Thanks for the alert about the dup. thread. I closed it.

When you don't have a backup I don't know what can be done except for trying recovery software, as you have, or if the data has suddenly become very important there are companies who can, at least sometimes, succeed where free software fails.

All of the sudden my computer is messing up. If I just start my computer up it boots up just like it should but lets say I install something and it says it needs to restart my computer is when it messes up.

The computer try's to start up and the light on the monitor turns to yellow but the computer never turns off and the yellow light on the monitor just goes away and comes back and goes away again and comes back.

It just keeps doing that and never restarts at all. In order to get my computer to re-boot I have to push the reset button on my tower and then my computer starts right up again. No matter what I do it will not do a restart.

Any suggestions any body????

I am staying in Hanoi Vietnam and downloaded photos onto a computer at the hotel I'm staying in. The photos did go on the computer, so I erased them from my camera and then I was about to copy them onto a USB stick when I accidentally kicked the power cord and the computer shut down. When I started it again, the photos were gone. I downloaded some more photos to the computer and disconnected power and started it again and the same thing happened.

I am assuming it is in some mode that the hotel has set up so it will not store anything that guests download. Is there a way I can recover the photos. I am assuming it must be done thru administrator or something, the only problem is the hotel owners don't speak English so I have no idea how to explain this to them to get the administrator password.

Please anyone help me?

When I go to the J drive and open up the Maxtor files, I can see all the back up files there, but how do I transfer them onto this other computer since the original computer is no longer usable? I use a HP Pavilion laptop.  I was having a few issues with a couple of programs not working ccorrectly.  After reviewing my options , it gave me 2 choices.  A factory reset which wipes all personal info off the machine or according to the discription a win software reset which is supposed to allow you to keep all your personal info including photo's, doccuments, music.  Since it wasn't supposed to remove personal files I decided to use the reset (not factory reset).  When it was done most of my info was still there (photo's, documents music).  However it wiped out my financial info and also my personall contacts and emails and mmy email program (Outlook 2007) iit removed Office.  My question is, is there any way of getting that info back, especially my saved emails and ccontact info?

You will probably need to use a data recovery program. Most of these are rather expensive however, there are a few free ones around. I've used Pandora Recovery for a lot of clients and had rather positive results.

It is a free download and pretty straight forward to run

I got a external hard drive, it means it has a individual Recycle Bin in F: Drive, separate it with the Recycle Bin of the computer in C: Drive.

But my computer was installed with Windows 7 again after a reparation, and now has a new unique identifier called Security ID or SID. for example: S-1-5-21-3225745820-1949245524-1067675123-1000

When I plugin the external drive the Recycle Bin looks empty, but the hard drive has the same space in megas used in the disk.

And now the Recycle Bin folder located in the external hard drive which is linked to my previous SID number of Windows 7, is hidden. In "Folder Options" I unhide the protected files and i found the previous Recycle Bin folder with the SID number
in it, but the names of the files has changed like $I0UFUJO, $I0U9PNS, $I1I2OMR, etc. and the original path file when was erased has dissapear.

Please, let me know how to recover my previous Recycle Bin files with their original names and path location before was deleted, because I need to get some of those files and in their original location and delete the others to free space from the disk. I am
using a Virtual Machine for doing that, just in case. Thanks.

Hi support guy forum users,
Quick, question: I recently ran across scenario with a friend. His computer, during operation, randomly shuts off and the cmos resets back to factory default.

Specs:
CPU: AMD 1700 XP
MOBO: Elitegroup (ECS) K7S5A
RAM: 2.0 gig
HDD: Maxtor 80 gig w/ 8mb cache
PSU: Antec True Power 400 Watt

The only testing I performed was taking it home and set it for full operation for 3 days as a mini file server. There was no problem, seem to be only happening in his area. Could it be an outlet problem or should I just switch the PSU? Any suggestions or comments are greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!

Mark

A:Computer turns off and CMOS reset back to default

[tsg=welcome][/tsg]

As far as the CMOS reverting back to the factory defaults, it sounds like the Battery may be going dead on the motherboard. I would look into getting a replacement.

The randomly shutting of could be a multitude of things, although with it running fine at your place, I'm leaning towards a power problem, not with the PSU but with the actual power feeding the unit. It sounds like the power is spiking high or sags low... whenever it sags low it is shutting down the machine. I I would suggest a UPS (universal Power supply) also known as a battery backup... a small one would condition the power enough to regulate all of the spikes and sags.

Guess it depends on what you mean by "administrator part." If you mean that you lost your BIOS password you're pretty much out of luck. But since you mention your "guest account" I'm guessing that you mean you can boot Windows. So, boot to the Recovery partition or to your Recovery DVDs or CDs to do the "recover/reset/restore to factory defaults." You can find specifics on how to do so on the PC manufacturer's web site and/or in documentation you got with it.

Hi everybody:

I recently switched for Windows 7 to Windows 10 and when I opened WIndows Live Mail I saw it was empty. I found that the messages where in the next folder:
C:\Users\Myuser\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail
I did a copy of that folder (and the rest of the Windows Live folders), I renamed the folders and tried to reopen WLM to see if the folders wher recreated. They weren't recreated.

So I unistalled WLM. I wanted to install it again and find the new folders to replace the with the original ones. But Windows Live Essentials is not supported for WIndows 10 (apparently it works if you come from WIndows 10, but you can't install it again).

So now I have all the copies of the WL folders, but I don't know how to reover that info. Any idea?

A:Recover Windows live mail info

I do not have an answer for you.

However, I would like to clarify that one can reinstall WLM onto a Windows 10 anytime one wants.
I did that several times when I had to do a Clean Install of Windows 10. Reinstalling WLM was never an issue.

It is now simply called Windows Essentials. MS has long since ditched the word " Live".

After updates were run the laptop would not reboot or even reset. Resetting the PC won't finish and no error codes will generate.

When booting, it will generate a stop code 0xc000021a

The following (attempted) fixes that did not work:

Refresh your PC, Reset your PC (using the Windows 10 recovery from off the partition), Open a System Restore point (there was 2 restore points...1 was the "critical" update), Startup repair.

Despite this, all files are still visible on the computer using the command prompt and I was able to back them up. Now I just want the computer to run properly.

Ran each of these, which all completed successfully but did not fix the issue:

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /scanos
bootrec /rebuildbcd

Chkdsk /f runs & completes but finds no problems.

It looks like the bootloader is corrupted but the "normal" fixes aren't working. Did the Windows 10 update kill my Dad's laptop?
I've spent days trying to figure this out and now really regret doing that upgrade.

I used a "PC Mover"-type software to copy from my old desktop to my new Windows 8.1 PC. It didn't work well and left the new PC a mess, almost unusable. So I want to restore back to the way the PC was when it arrived. I have both the Windows 8.1 disk that came with my PC as well as a USB flash drive on which I created (I think) an image copy. But nothing I've tried to do the restore is working. Here's what's happening.

I hit Shift-Restart to bring up a screen that allows me to "Troubleshoot". If I choose that option I get a screen with an option to "Reset Your PC". But when I select that my screen just goes black and the computer just appears to sit there. If I select the option that says "Use a Device" it shows me a few options including the Sandisk USB flash drive on which I created my image copy. But when I select that option the same thing happens as when I do the "Troubleshooting" option - the screen turns black and the computer just sits there. Finally, when I put the Windows 8.1 disk in the disk drive and start my PC it ignores the disk and just boots normally.

Also, I wanted to get into BIOS to change the boot order so it would boot from the flash drive but it appears that the old F2 doesn't work in Windows 8.1. I've got my OS on an SSD and the PC boots from screen off to the startup screen in about 10 seconds. There's no intermediate screen where I know it's time to hit F2.

My Sony Vaio (windows 7) died last night, after I dropped it in my garage getting out of the car. I removed the hard drive and installed it in an external case. I have it connected to my work laptop (dell windows 7) and I do hear the tone when I plug in the USB that tells me the computer noticed a new device. However, I do not see the drive available in explorer so I can copy my files.

After reading other posts I tried a few things with no success.

When I go into device manager I see "generic external USB device", and I have tried uninstall / scan for hardware changes. After a few minutes it changes back to "generic external USB device" so no good.

I go into disk management and I don't see the external drive at all.

What should I do next? Not an IT guy, just hoping I can recover my files. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

The first thing which you check if you forget login password. When we install Windows, it automatically creates an account "Administrator" and sets its password to blank. So if you have forget your user account password then try this:

Start system and when you see Windows Welcome screen / Login screen, press ctrl+alt+del keys twice and it'll show Classic Login box. Now type "Administrator" (without quotes) in Username and leave Password field blank. Now press Enter and you should be able to log in Windows.

Now you can reset your account password from "Control Panel -> User Accounts".

Same thing can be done using Safe Mode. In Safe Mode Windows will show this in-built Administrator account in Login screen.

_2th Method:_

There are a lot of Windows password revealers and crackers available.

Have you tried pressing F11 at the startup HP logo?If the HP recovery partition is intact, this option will allow you to reset your PC to factory settings. Please note, Doing this will delete everything from the Hard Drive of the PC so if you saved something on the PC in the past, it will all be gone.

I have a computer with Windows 8.  I'd like to sell this computer, so I want to wipe out everything I have put in it.  If I use System Recovery I will accomplish this.  The problem is that as soon as the System Recovery has completed the computer immediately asks me to put in my name, Microsoft account information, etc.

What I'm trying to accomplish is to get the computer to the point that it was after I bought it, but before I actually turned it on.  (So that when it is turned back on it will ask for a name, Microsoft account, etc.)

How can I accomplish this?

Normally it would do that after a reboot, so if you catch that and force the machine to Power off it should work like you want.

Hello!

I initially had Windows 7 on my Toshiba Satellite laptop. I tried to factory restore, but the original partition with the manufacturer files was missing. I decided to upgrade to Windows 10 for free, as I had an activated Widows 7 OS. The upgrade was successful, but there was some mouse lag. I suspected some remnants of either viruses or malware so I thought I would do a complete recovery or reset.

I was able to create the bootable USB drive. After I started the recovery process, it took some time but it seemed to work. After it reached 100% on the progress bar, the computer automatically restarted and booted to the USB drive and started the process all over again. I tried powering off the computer from the troubleshooting screen and restarting without the USB stick, but then I got an error that there was no boot disk. I then started to get hard drive locked errors, etc. I tried all repair options available and the computer will attempt them, but other than that, I appear to be dead in the water. I'm putting my last hope in the command prompt, but I'm way to rusty at DOS to try it.

Is there anyone who can offer any suggestions on how I can fix this?

Many thanks!

Laptop Information- HP 2000 Notebook PC
Well, yesterday night, everything was going good until I tried to download League Of Legends on my laptop. I was multi-tasking on facebook, youtube, and a whole other stuff while my laptop was downloading League Of Legends, and then the whole laptop frooze and then I panicked and pressed the power button a couple times. When the laptop booted back up, it was all black and nothing happend. I was searching online and pressed the F11 button to try and restore the laptop and it did work and I also got into windows 8. It was lagging and very slow when I booted into windows 8, and so I just decided to shutdown the laptop and try to refresh and reset the laptop from boot. However the automatic recovery didn't work and couldn't repair the laptop. When I was refreshing and reseting the laptop, it wouldn't finish all the way, because it would stop at like 60% and then just stop and freeze. Now, I think I messed up a bit and now I can't boot into Windows 8 or even RESET,RESTORE,or REFRESH. Also I just dod a diagnostic check on UEFI, and my Hard Disk Short DST has failed, so I think that I need to replace my hard disk. RIGHT NOW, MY LAPTOP BOOTS THIS SCREEN DOWN HERE

In this case, Windows is 100% correct in it's statement. 0xc000000f represents file corruption of a system file and in this case, the SYSTEM registry hive. If your laptop is under warranty, I suggest having them repair it if the diagnostics are coming back with failures. It really just sounds like your hard drive's health has degraded too far and needs replacement.

dm110 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! The Win10 Upgrade is know to corrupt the Recovery partition stored there by the OEM that built the original machine. This pretty much guarantees that no HP Recovery is going to work: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Video-Display-and-Touch/HP-Recovery-Manager-Blocked-After-Windo...This means that RESET no longer works properly on your laptop due to your doing the Win10 Upgrade.  Even though it might look like the Reset worked, in fact, there is stuff behind the scenes that will not work.To actually restore your PC to its original condition, you need something known as HP Recovery Media. Additionionally, there is no way to either go back to a date earlier than that, or to retrieve apps that were in place prior to the Reset.  While it IS true that you can use data recovery apps to retrieve SOME individual files and folders, they can not be used to retrieve previously installed apps because those have pieces all over the place. If the MS Office apps were installed from individual files that you downloaded from Microsoft, you MIGHT be able to recover those files using data recovery apps:  Download and install this utility: http://www.majorgeeks.com/news/story/recover_data_in_3_steps_with_minitool_power_data_recovery_free_... Then, see what it can find in terms of previous files.  I don't know what the Office download files are named, so you would have to Google for that inf... So,

I reset my computer, it wasn't running too great and I just wanted a fresh start, now it says "Product ID: Unavailable" in the System Information section, and I can't upgrade to Windows 8.1 because I didn't see it in the store.

I don't have a Windows 8 Product Key because the computer came already activated with Windows 8. I really need this to start working and I'm screwed if it doesn't, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I am having major problems trying to get sound back on my Laptop after being forced to reset my system (maintaining personal files). Please help.
I have a HP Envy (i forget what model) its not important.
For a separate reason I ended up resetting my system, after which the sound icon appeared with a red circle which an X in the middle next to it and hovering over it gives the massage "No audio output devise is installed".
I checked the drives and the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC says that there are no devices installed. I attempted to install drivers just from the web, then through the HP Assistant, and finally through Beats (my speaker make). Each time a warning saying
there was an error installing the driver and the "Device attached to the system isn't functioning".
I've uninstalled, tried again with no difference, a friend said to roll back the driver, this option is grayed out and updating the driver gives the same result as re-installing.
Does anyone have any bright ideas?
Thanks,
Charles

So my computer has been kinda laggy and running slowly so I figured I would do a clean reset of Windows 10. It noted that it would take hours, which was fine. However about an hour into it, it said there was an error resetting. It then restarted the computer however I can't get passed the "ASUS" start up logo. It goes black and then loops. I hit F9 but none of the options work for me - automatic repair won't work because it says my computer doesn't have an administrator and when I try to reset again from there, it tells me that "a required drive partition is missing." I don't have the greatest knowledge on computers, so I really don't even know what that means.

I've read that I might have to reboot from a USB - how would I go upon doing that? Is there something I can download on the Microsoft website? I don't have a key because the computer came pre-loaded with Windows 8 and I upgraded to Windows 10 for free last year. Will I still be able to boot from a USB?

A:Windows 10 Reset Failed - Can't Boot Computer

I've done some research and I think I may have confused myself even more.

When I tried to reboot from F9, it gave me the option to refresh and reset (both did not work) or "continue to windows 8" ... so is my Windows 10 gone? Even if I boot from a USB, will it still work? I read that it will work without a key but did the failed reset remove the activation?

Once I create a USB, how does it work? When I put it into my computer, will it just start? or is there something I need to access to get it to work?

I apologize if these questions sound dumb/easy, this is very new to me and I don't want to do the wrong thing.

So I got my Windows 8 computer in 2012, later upgraded it to 8.1. I have had no major problems with it until earlier today. I have Sony Vegas Movie Studio and when I tried uploading a video into it to edit it, my computer started freezing at everything. I looked in my task manager and it was nothing major to the RAM or CPU. I tried restarting it and then upon restarting, it showed a black screen with nothing. I had to restart it 5 times to get it to actually turn on. This post is not about malware issues or freezing though.

I want to reset my computer to factory settings. So I go to Settings-->Change PC Settings-->Update and Recovery-->Remove Everything and Reinstall Windows. And it gives me this message: "Some files are missing. Your windows installation or recovery media will provide these files." So I looked it up and found this site: http://www.gizmag.com/how-to-windows-8-pc-refresh-reset/32801/

Towards the end of the page it says what to do if you get that message. So I followed the commands and waited until it was 100% completed. Then I was happy and tried resetting it again. I get the same message.

So my question is: How do I reset my computer? And pardon the long post.

A:Cannot Reset my Windows 8.1 Computer to Factory Settings

Hello, and Welcome

The problem is when a person updates 8 to 8.1 through the store, you lose the ability to do a factory reset or refresh.

http://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1183043-caution-you-may-lose-resetrefresh-if-you-upgrade-to-windows-81/

There is a work-around on the above link.

Another option:
Get the windows key using produkey. The key is embedded in the BIOS of all OEM windows 8 computers. Go here to download the 8.1 media iso and you can install Windows 8.1 or try the workaround in the above link.

Backup any important data first.
