Laptop needs mobo to be changed. How can I change it?

Q: Laptop needs mobo to be changed. How can I change it?

I have to change the mobo because the interface for the charger gives off smoke. I tried a different power cord and same thing smoke would go off. Its a hp laptop. Now if i can find the mobo and switch it out, how difficult is it? And i want to keep the hdd data. How do i keep that data once i plug the hdd to the new mobo?

Preferred Solution: Laptop needs mobo to be changed. How can I change it?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Laptop needs mobo to be changed. How can I change it?

You look up the make and model number for the motherboard in that HP and either get one from HP or somewhere else like Ebay. You will need the workshop manual for your model from HP -- download as a PDF.
If the motherboard is identical to the one you have, and you have fitted it correctly, the disk should just work as before.

It is not difficult if you follow the manual and take care not to force things, but you do need to be patient and mechanical skill is a good idea.. You should make a paper/card template for the screws and bits as you take them apart.

Hi all, How easy or hard is it for a novice to change a mobo in a laptop.

A:How easy or difficult is it to Change a mobo in a laptop?

laptop + mobo = NO

I would say extremely difficult to do it correctly and not advisable at all.
The cpu in almost all laptops is unable to come out, they solder it in.

I must be missing something fundamental. My mobo died (smoke coming out). My best guess is it shorted when I jammed some wiring inside a bay, but I'm not certain.

I purchased a new mobo - Soltek 75FRV. I am using XP 1800+, Volcano 9 HSF, 512 PC 2100 RAM, Antec True Power 430 PSU and 60GB Maxtor hdd. Only the HSF was bought at the same time as the mainboard because my old one required attachment from under the board with 4 screws and this mobo didn't come with the holes.

I powered up and all fans (including heatsink fan), lights and switches work properly. Then I brought the machine into my office and attached the monitor and connected the hard drive. The monitor works because the LED lights up and I see the test pattern. But there is no bootup, the case speaker doesn't beep, nothing. I turned over the IDE cables in all possible combinations, but that wasn't it. I then tried another hdd with the same result.

Suggestions please!!

A:Changed Mobo - Compter No-Go

Open her up and make sure the CPU or memory hasn't become loose in transit. I know a Volcano should be pretty secure, but you never know. Have you checked the power supply voltage selection switch? Maybe it got bumped to the wrong voltage. Also check all the other peripheral cards for being snugly in their slots and that all external cables are connected to the correct ports.

Hey there, I'm new to this. I purchased a computer from MDG and fried my power supply and motherboard. I found another power supply and peplaced the old one and found an identical biostar m900-m4 mobo and switched that up as well thinking it would just boot as normal. When I started up I get:

Please re-enter CPU settings in the CMOS setup and remember to save before

Press F8 to Enable system Configuration
Press F9 to Select Booting Deviceafter POST
Press F1 to continue, DEL to enter SETUP

Now I have no idea what to do. The Mobo looked to be identical and same model, but I noticed the board was blue instead of green and PCI slots were Orange instead of white but all in all looked the same. Any ideas to avoid paying a hefty sum to take it into a computer shop and dumping a whole whack of money I don't have? Plus I love learning. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you

I'm having a huge issue with my new build. I upgraded from a very outdated Intel mobo and processor to an AMD setup. I turn the machine on and everything powers up no problem but nothing boots, not even the BIOS. I can't even boot from the disk drive to reinstall windows. Could really use some help on this one.

A:Changed from Intel to AMD mobo, windows will not boot

Are you getting any beeps after power-on? Not coming out of the BIOS boot is often related to an improperly installed CPU or memory modules and/or defective parts. A little more info on your hardware might help.

I am new to working on computers, and I have an eMachines T2895 2.8 Celeron D, 512DDR that fried the mobo. I got a replacement mobo and installed it. It booted up and ran fine but after 3 times hitting the power switch. After I shut it down, it will not boot now. When you press the power switch, the led will light but then the computer will immediately lose power. Then nothing if you press the power switch again (unless I unplug and replug the computer in). Sometimes the fan and LED will stay on for about 5 seconds before losing power. What could be causing this? Power supply? power switch?

Newbie here, just getting into working on my computers.

I have an old eMachines T2895, 2.8 GHz celeron, 120 GB Hdd, 512 Mb DDR RAM, Realtek ALC655 onboard audio chip, running on XP home.

Here is my issue. The notorious eMachine power supply fried, taking the mobo with it. The old mobo is an MSI 6714 GV. I replaced the PS with a good one from newegg. I found a used mobo from a supply house, but it was a newer revision mobo. Its a MSI 6714 GVP. After installation, everything works fine, except no audio devices recognized or listed. Reloaded drivers from manu website, but nothing. Could it be that the hardware is not added? Where is the add hardware options located? Could this be because the mobo was previously using a sound card? If so, how do i change the settings back to onboard audio? Can anyone suggest why audio devices aren't being recognized, or what my problem might be?

All help would be appreciated.

A:Emachines mobo & PS fried, changed and now audio device not recognized

Hello! Welcome to TechSpot!

Un-install any audio software.
In "device manager" look for any "yellow "?" ", if none, check the bios for audio settings.
If it had a sound card previously then the onboard audio has been disabled in the bios.

I'll try to be as brief as possible.

I replaced a non-working mobo (D845GVSR) on an emachines pc with a mobo model D845GERG2

After booting the computer, when Windows got to the log in screen with the user names, it loaded in low resolution, I believe it was 600 x 480 and 256 colors. The computer would then shut down before I could even log in.

I tried doing a windows repair a couple of times with the Windows XP CD. This didn't help much, except now the computer went into hibernation instead of shutting down, still low resolution.
Also, when coming out of hibernation, I would get this error:
STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0xF72457BF, 0xF7148010, 0x00000000)

ialmnt5.sys - Address F7245BF base at F723E000, DateStamp 3fbcf8f8

Beginning dump of physical memory

What I did next was use a BartPE bootable CD, I accessed the i386 folder that was on the computer and ran winnt32.exe to repair windows xp again this time using windows oem which was in that folder.

Things went a bit better this time. The log in screen now displays in normal resolution and full color. However, it keeps going into hibernation as soon as the log in screen appears.
I no longer get blue screen errors when it comes out of hibernation. It just displays the log in screen and once again into hibernation.

I've been trying to fix this for about a week and I'm becoming very frustrated.
Please help me figure out how to fix this.

Thank you.

A:Changed mobo, can't access Windows, computer shuts down/hibernation

Possibly driver corruption.

Because you have repaired a couple of times, you could backup and re-install clean (format and remove partition too)

Otherwise, download all the updated drivers and try re-installing them

HP computer running Vista Home Premium up to date with a HP w1858 LCD monitor.

I wanted to set the screen display to make the text larger. Ended up in the DPI scaling screen. Set it to custom size 144 dpi or 150 percent of normal. Which gives me a nice size font on desktop, control panel and most web pages.

Only problem is some screens do not show the entire screen ie on doing some software installs the accept icon does not show on the bottom and I cannot get the screen to scroll down to click on accept.

Same deal now on control panel when I go to the DPI scaling to set the DPI back to normal or even set the custom DPI back to say 90 I can make the change on the screen but cannot get the screen to scroll down so I can click on apply icon to make the change on next boot.

Any help appreciated. Is there anyway I can just get the monitor to go back to basis settings before I started messing around with DPI stuff ?

A:changed DPI and now cannot change it back

Duh, I fixed the problem by restoring to a earlier version of vista. Should have thought a bit more before posting.

Hello, So I changed out my HDD for a Samsung 850 Evo SSD and everything is working fine BUT I can't change the SATA controller from I have no clue what it is now (non-raid is all I see) to AHCI. My Bios simply does not have the option for any of that. psg (dot) i (dot) lithium (dot) com/t5/image/serverpage/image-id/89722iD3E809EF25B5FBC9?v=v2 That is pretty much what my menu looks like. The boot option just tells me information of my SSD but thats it. I tried disableing legacy support and secure boot and restarted to see if that would bring up any more options but nothing. Any help is appreciated, Thank you.

A:Changed out HDD for SSD but can't change SATA controller to ...

Hi: Your screen shot did not show up. There are no options to change the sata controller setting. The default setting is what it is. I see from the product specs that your notebook has an Intel 4th generation processor. http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-ENVY-TouchSmart-14-k100-Ultrabook/6488511/model/6787673/docum... You can easily check to see what the drive controller setting is defaulted to. It will be one of these...AHCI or RAID. Go to the device manager... If the controller is set to AHCI, there should be an IDE ATA/Atapi Controllers device manager category. Click to expand that category, and there you should see the drive controller's description as an Intel something or other SATA AHCI Controller. If the controller is set to RAID, there should be a Storage Controllers device manager category. Click to expand that category, and there you should see the drive controller's description as an Intel something or other SATA RAID Controller. Either way, your SSD will perform just fine since both drive controller settings allow for TRIM support for the SSD.

A:My e-mail has changed to AOL, how do I change it back?

Did you close and then restart Internet Explorer before checking if AOL was still the email client ? Sometimes these changes dont come into effect until the browser has been closed .

Also (in XP , at least) you can go to Control Panel/Add Remove Programs . In the left-hand panel there's a button for setting Program Access and Defaults . You might want to change the default mail client in there too . In Vista I think it's Start/Default Programs/Program Access (not 100% sure but think I'm close enough that you can follow) .

(Sorry if this overlaps w my thread in Hijack This) -
I am the only admin on a laptop shared by several people including a teenager who is not very responsible. I have a user account w admin privileges as well as the Administrator account. I have noticed that when I change a program, eg upgrade Firefox, on the user/admin account that the Administrator account Firefox doesn't change. Is this normal? Does it mean effectively that things like Windows Updates are user-specific?

And when I run my antivirus, will it see everything on all users plus administrator, or not? Can I delete other users' cookies etc.

I have an HP laptop, run Win XP Pro SP2 fully up to date, Firefox 95% of the time, Kaspersky, Spybot Search and Destroy, SnoopFree, Winpatrol (but last 2 just added last few days). Thanks.

A:Admin - if I change programs are everyone's changed?

It will vary based on the program. Windows updates is a system-wide thing, but I believe this will only run for Administrators. Firefox keeps everything separate so addons and updates for one user don't affect the rest. Most antivirus programs will update for the whole system as well as scan the whole system for viruses. Some older ones, however, may not allow a full scan in a limited account.

OKay. So Today, all of a sudden, I notice that the font on EVERYTHING on this user account is completely different. I don't know exactly which font it's changed to, but I know it's different from the standard trebuchet/tahoma/lucida console that everything else is using. It's changed on my browser, any applications I run (notepad, etc) and pretty much everything else.

The fonts haven't been changed when I look in the appearance settings, nor the settings of the individual programs. Trying to set them to another font appears not to work.

Scanned with Avast! and Spybot, neither found anything. The problem only exists on this user account and not either of the other two accounts.

I checked Startuplist and nothing unusual was found on there either. What would do this? And why can't I change it back?

I'm still somewhat new to XP....Anyone have any ideas?

So I recently tried to run a new monitor, things didn't work out and I'm back to my old setup with a 20" widescreen monitor.

I got on chrome (the usual browser I use) today and noticed the font on my bookmarked tabs was different. Then as I went on various sites youtube, forums, ect, I noticed that all the fonts on these sites were changed as well. I also checked IE and saw the fonts were all changed on there. It was odd because last night everything was normal and I get on today and it is like this.

So after checking many forums I did a browser reset which didn't work. Cleared my cache and browser history, nothing. Even when I go to the chrome settings, and change the font it won't change. I even changed it to some random weird fonts and it won't change to anything else! I haven't downloaded any fonts in a long time so I know that isn't the reason. I really don't know what to do. The font it has now isn't bad or hard to read, it is just different and annoys me and I want the original one back. Anyone know what I can do?

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Your hard drive will have all the drivers on it for your old mobo and won`t work with the new mobo.

You can try doing a windows repair as per this thread HERE.

If that doesn`t work, you may have to consider a format and reinstall.

We installed 365 on my wife's machine strictly to resolve an Outlook 2010 problem with intention to later, but not yet, remove Office 2010. At the moment she's using Word and Excel 2010.

However, 365 changed the default Word from 2010 to 2016. If you visit 'Change default programs' instead of there being Word '10 and '16 there are 2 instances of Word '16 thus disabling the ability to change the Word/Excel default back to 2010. The same condition hold true for at least Excel. At that point I was too annoyed to further investigate.

Since the components were installed from the MS website I haven't even looked at uninstall to see if, as with previous versions, you could remove individual modules since I'm concerned you would have to first do something on their website.

I'm also concerned that if I make an incorrect move in this regard the process will not correctly revert her Office 2010 to its previous condition and I'll end up having to reinstall Office '10 (without Outlook).

Is my current problem a known condition, bug or whatever? Is there a 'proper' way of fixing the problem?

And I also make sure that everything in Regional and Languages are English and United States.

Here is the screenshot of the problem, the font in the software looks weird compare to the application name(on top)

A:Software's font changed, anyway to change it back?

If this is the only software that has changed have you tried re-installing Utorrent?

By the way you are only downloading legal torrents, correct?

Does anyone know of a free or trial utility that would allow me to monitor an individual file for changes and will report what software or process name changed it? It's acceptable if it only monitors all the files in a folder.

A:File change monitoring software + what changed it?

There is a program capable of monitoring file access activities within a folder and it's called process monitor.

hello, new guy here.i resently ran a memtest86 program to check my ram so i had to change my boot priority to get the program to work.now it seems i cant change it back.ive changed it and saved it but my cdrom still wants to boot up first.i even reset the bios with no luck.can someone help me out.

A:changed boot priority now cant change it back

When entering bios you should be able to access the boot menu and select which device to boot 1st/2nd/3rd, after making any changes you must select to save & exit normally F10 key

Having dvd/cd first is quite normal followed by your OS HDD

I am the only user of this computer. Starting up, it used to load all of my settings and prepare itself for use automatically. Something changed, and now it shows a screen that makes me click my user name (Administrator, I am the only one here) before it will finish booting. What happened, and can I get rid of this unnecessary feature?

I installed XP on drive Z but XP thinks it's on drive D. Drive D is what my vista recovery stuff is on (I dual boot)

A:Is it normal for XP to change the drive letter, but it's not actually changed...

A boot drive (drive with bootable operating system) will normally be assigned the letter C: in Windows, even if it is a multiboot system.

Of course, this can be changed by drives attached on an install using a MS OEM version of XP or various other things which were not necessarily done in the proper sequence. I've seen this on my system but I cannot recall the exact circumstances.

As for the Z: letter change...I don't believe that XP will assign such to a bootable drive, unless there are 25 other drive letters assigned permanently ahead of it...just speculation, never tried it.

If you installed XP after installing Vista...and with the Vista drive connected during the XP install...then that might account for the D: letter assignment.

Well, just upgraded my motherboard (from Intel DG965RY) and CPU (from C2D E6600) to EP45-UD3R and C2Q Q9550, respectively, without reinstalling the OS. This is my first time doing that. All the times I've done this right up to Vista, a major hardware upgrade has meant a complete OS reinstall.

This time my current Windows (Win7 x64 7229) install correctly detected and installed all the necessary drivers, with no user input required. The only thing that didn't install properly was the Netgear WG311v3 WLAN card, but that is a universal problem, due to Netgear not providing drivers.

That's not my real question, though.

What do you think? Should I reinstall, or leave well enough alone?

I was planning to use this upgrade as an excuse to install RTM x64, but seeing how everything went without a hassle, I feel kind of sorry to let 7229 go.

A reinstall would clear all the excess baggage ( old drivers, that kind of stuf), though.

Confused and in need of a couple of expert opinions.

I would say, if it's working, don't touch it.

Just check in device manager if the computer is installed as ACPI.
If it's not, you could get into trouble, otherwise enjoy what you have.

Btw, 7229 is rock solid.

edit: a win7 install by default carries a huge load of excess drivers, so a few more dont hurt anyone.

ok, after a long epic battle with a stuttering problem with my 6800/nforce3 combo (which took me about 9 months to find out the problem, check the forums, it's a huge widespread problem), i finally decided to switch my motherboard out for a new chipset. first i ordered an abit kv8 pro, and after i turned on the computer, all the fans worked but nothing was displayed on the monitor. the led indicator on the board told me that it was a successful boot, but for whatever reason nothing loaded. that coupled with a few minor power issues, i determined that the problem was that my power supply was not strong enough for the board (i run 18amps and the 12v rail, whereas the abit forums suggest 20a for that specific model). so i sent the board back and ordered a gigabyte k8u with a uli chipset. i put it all in, but the same thing happens (minus the power issues). fans spin, i hear the hard drive start up, but nothing happens. i know that there can be issues with booting windows when changing chipsets, but this doesn't seem to be the issue at hand. this is my first time dealing with mobo changes, so i could very well be missing something simple. if anyone knows, please reply.
ps i'm certain everything is plugged in correctly

Ok, my question is the following:
My computer is an old IBM, with a PIII running at 598Mhz, 383mb RAM, and two HD's.
I know some of you might say well... just buy a new computer, well I did, but I still want to keep this one with me, since I want it in my room, since the new computer is basicly for the whole family.
Now my quesiton is, can I go and change the mobo a P4 mobo, an Asus P4S800D-X and a Pentium Celeron "Intel Celeron(Pentium 4 based) 1.8 GHz 400MHz FSB, 128K Cache ". Of course changing this two would mean changing the PS as well which I would change for a Antec SL400 400W. And buy new RAM since this one needs DDR and the one I had was SDRAM, it would be a Kingston (don't know which one yet though).
I would be changing to that from a mobo that is a IBM 66M2, PIII 598MHZ and 383Mb SDRAM.
The whole change would be under 300 dollars, and even less than 250$.
Now the question is, is it worth it? And if it is, how do I do it?
The thing is that, i don't know if you only have to change the motherboards around and Windows, when you start your computer will notice it and make the necessary changes or you have to reinstall windows so it will work.
Thanks for your patience, I appreciate any comments and suggestions.

PS: I have WinXP Pro w/ SP1.

#1-will I have to re-install Windows XP or will it just boot up from the original install?
#2 What other dangers will be present?
Thanks for any help, this place ROCKS!

A:Questions regarding Mobo change

Windows doesn't like a massive change to hardware once it's installed. If you're only running one hard drive, you'll have to reinstall the os once you replace all the hardware.
I did find out (by accident on my daughter's computer) that if you had two hard drives (her main hd was used XP Home as the operating system with full SP2; slave drive only had XP Home with SP1), and I did an upgrade on hers. I swapped out my old IDE hard drive because it was bigger than hers and was going to use it for storage on hers as a slave. I then took her original slave drive with only XP and SP 1 on it and changed the jumpers from slave to master, hooked it up and to my surprise it booted.
I'm not going to say this will work everytime, but it did for me. If you only have one hard drive, you'd better back up everything you want to save, then upgrade and reinstall the os. It's better to do a clean install to take care of any problems which may arise later from the original os, so don't just do a Windows repair from the disk, do a complete install.
Best of luck.

Turn computer off manually (power button).
Restart in Safe Mode and see if you can run MBAM from there.

I'm really struggling with a handful of coolwwwsearch apparent infections, as well as an Igetnet one.
I'm running XP Pro, with SP2 just recently installed, but apparently POST infection.

spybot finds a handful of CWS variants, but doesn't successfully remove them. I've done the manual removal procedures, but I'm still stuck.
Adaware doesn't do it, either.
I've got hosts supposedly locked down by Spybot, but if I go look at it manually, it has this in it: for 3 domains.
I delete those lines, they reappear.
I cannot change the hosts file to read-only.
I AM full administrator.
I have System Restore turned OFF.

I've been screwing with this, with manual removal, etc. for 2 days now.
