Dell Inspiron n5050, missing options in F8 boot menu

Q: Dell Inspiron n5050, missing options in F8 boot menu

Hi, I'm trying to do a factory restore on an Inspiron N5050, and the F8 menu does not have the 'Repair Your Computer' option, nor other expected items, such as last known good config. All it shows is the 3 safe mode options, and the boot windows normally option.

Dell's F12 menu is also missing an option to repair/restore.

I can boot the laptop to normal windows 7, but it's a black screen with a movable cursor. I get the same thing in Safe Mode, black screen, cursor.

I'm trying to figure out why the F8 menu is so limited. I can boot a Hiren's CD and get to a Mini XP desktop from there, and it works fine (no black screen).

Any help would be appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi  durannehomar,
Welcome  to the Community,
The Inspiron N5050 system supports dual-channel DDR3 SDRAM with memory speeds of 1333 MHz.
It supports Minimum 1GB and you can expand upto Maximum 8GB RAM.
Thank You

YES YOU CAN! Up to an Intel Core i5-2540M Mobile Processor [email protected],3 turbo and 16GB's [email protected] and ssd drive ..Its easy to upgrade this laptop-Do a search on YouTube or download the service manual @Dell

A:Can you upgrade a Dell Inspiron N5050?

Yes you can upgrade to the intel 2540m Mobile processor, same socket..
First thing you do is go to Intel ARK and compare your processor with other processors you would like to upgrade to.. .All the info you need to upgrade is there at the ARK website. There you will find socket info  Then you get some- Coollaboratory Liquid PRO Thermal Interface Material ..And on a Mobil processor you use a micro drop making the processor look like a mirror without any excess left on the processor. If you get to much on the processor you just suck it back into the needle so its not wasted . Spread the liquid Pro with a Q tip vigorously moving it around till its covered .Then remove the excess with a q tip   Then replace the heat sink by putting it in place over the processor match the holes with the screws then place it holding it down while you tighten the crews ..You can watch Liquid Pro being applied on you tube or go to the Coollaboratory website and see it there .. Liquid Pro is the best don't use their liquid ultra .. Its not as good.

I saw in this thread

that XP drivers were found for the N5050. The author said to PM them if we need the drivers, but as a new member I can't PM anyone, so I'm asking here.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Since you're downgrading from Windows 7 to Windows XP, I have doubts that the bluetooth and webcam devices will have drivers and will work.

You're lucky there are Windows XP drivers for the graphics and audio and ethernet/wireless devices - the primary ones.

Sounds like you need to get rid of some temp files build up,
Run this and check the boxes for temp files and thumbnails at the least,

You can use this to cleanup both browsers,
Temp files delete,
Run this as administrator and Start the scanner,
Shut your machine down after it finishes,

Just got a new Dell Inspiron N5050 laptop.
Using it about 3 weeks and loving it.
Pop up window invited me to update Windows. Clicked Yes.
While  update was in progress, I accidently turned it off.
Now, It boots up, but moments afterward, it goes to Blue Screen of Death and, before I can even read the Blue Screen, it goes to Black Screen and asks how I would like to start up - Normal startup - Safe mode - Safe Mode with Prompts, etc.
So I want to restore it to an earlier time or just restore back to the beginning (factory settings).
Can I do this in one of the start up options on the Black Screen?

I had an interesting problem, and there was a previous unanswered, but CLOSED post that discussed the same issue here:

I wanted to add to this. It seems that through trial and error that the motherboard/power supply is shorting out on a screw on the base of the unit. In particular, the two screws that are NOT on the edges, but towards the center of the laptop. I left those out and the laptop runs fine. I put them in, and I have no power at all. No lights, no fan, nothing on either DC or AC.

Just wanted to add this info in case anyone else comes along with a similar issue.

Hello fellow forum users, I have a problem on my hands I haven't been able to figure out myself in anyway. When I try to connect the bluetooth on my laptop (a Dell Inspiron 15 N5050) to my family room bluetooth sound system to play music through the system, it finds it in the "add device" section. However, as soon as it tries to connect to the system it always fails in some way. It's told me many things before. If it does add it it complains about no drivers? I've got all the correct drivers (I think I got them all at least) and yet it says something like no drivers found for the speaker system. This started to happen when I wiped the HDD for the laptop to help it's performance speed (helped a lot) and after reinstalling Windows 7 Ultimate x64, this is now the only problem I have. I'll attach a few pictures... Thanks in advance. Also the WiFi+Bluetooth card is a Dell Wireless 1701 Half size card. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance(again).

A:Dell Inspiron 15 N5050 No Bluetooth Audio Drivers?

That sounds like a problem with the Vizio (no drivers) rather than a driver problem in the PC.

Have you checked Vizio to see if they have any Windows drivers?

In case it is a PC driver issue, make sure you have all the drivers installed from Dell.

BTW, avoid Windows 10 on this model. Dell has a note that they do not support Win 10 for this model.

A:dell inspiron n5050 display problem. shaky screen

Run the built-in self test on the LCD -- hold D through powerup.  If you see the same fault, it's likely a bad screen. If not, it's either a bad video cable or a bad GPU -- replace the cable first.  If that doesn't solve it, the GPU is bad -  which means a replacement mainboard (or on a system of this one's age, a new system).

My old man's best friend divorced his wife a few years ago. She left a bunch of her stuff at his house. He has repeatedly asked her to come get her stuff & she refuses everytime. Since he bought it, he has the right to do whatever he wants with it. So instead of pawning it he gave it to my daughter for school work. She was so secretive around the time she left, that he doesn't know any of her passwords. It's stuck on the gmail/microsoft password login. He does have the admin password, but that doesn't seem to help at all. Is there anyway at all for me to access the advanced boot options without F8? I've tried F2 Which takes me set up & F12 which takes me to boot options. They both do not have the options for advanced boot options. Is there any hope for us to save this laptop. Hi everyone,
I am brand new on the forum and I have signed up specifically because I am having some problems with the Samsung SSD drive in my Dell Inspiron 3847 desktop,
At the moment I have it connected to sata port 0, exactly where the original HDD was plugged in. Although I am able to boot straight to Windows on the SSD with this configuration, I am unable to choose it as my primary boot drive because it is not showing in the boot menu, in a nutshell it is not listed in the bootable devices when I enter BIOS,
I spent around half an hour talking to a Dell technician on the telephone who walked me through some steps in the bios, but it still didn't show,
I contacted Dell support again today and spoke to a rather rude Guy in technical support who told me he could not help me with this, because the Inspiron 3847 has not been tested by Dell for SSD compatibility, he was most adamant that he could not help,
I am very frustrated by this whole affair because I have read articles, on this particular Forum in fact that suggests it is possible to install an SSD in this model,
Is there anybody within the community you can offer some support and tell me where I might be going wrong with this?, in its current configuration the SSD is working really great and fast, I'm just so confused as to why I can't use it as my primary drive?. I have formatted my original HDD and was planning to use this as extra storage,
If someone could help me with this I would be really grateful,

After doing a million (feels like it) fixes from the very many articles and posts about how to fix Windows 10 update problems, I have finally got Windows 10 installed on my husband's laptop.  There is only one problem:  it won't complete a reboot after a Restart.  It will reboot after powering off and back on.  I am hoping that someone might have a fix for this.  I did read that Dell is saying this laptop is not compatible with Win 10.  My husband swears that he did not tell Microsoft to go ahead with the upgrade and we have discovered that this was true of many other users as well.
I have done the following fixes already: reinstalled an updated driver for the display adapter, uninstalled any software that generated errors in the Windows event log (like HP Support Framework), changed a number of Start up Services to be manual (like Malware Bytes, which is not the anti-virus software in use, however, I did use it to scan the computer for viruses), increased the permissions on the Windows folder, reinstalled Win 10 using CD created by Windows Media Creator, turned off the Fast Restart in Power settings,  uninstalled the IDT Audio driver, ran the sfc /scannow and the DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image Scanhealth and probably more.
So anyone have other suggestions? Thanks!

Hi again folks!
Since creating a thread on here yesterday (elder daughter laptop stuck in reboot loop) I've come across another issue with a different laptop.
This is a Dell Inspiron (Interl Celeron) with Windows 7 installed.
Being a pretty old laptop, it hasn't been used for some time (my youngest dautgher has since upgrade). However, her younger brother has spotted it and wants me to try and get it working (he's young so won't be doing anything to strenuous on it!)
When booted up, it returns the message BOOTMGR is missing: press ALT, CTRL and DEL to reboot/start.
F8 repair function will not work (possibly not installed in that Win 7 edition?).
I'm currently running all the memory tests, but can't see that helping me.
I was wondering if I can use a Windows 7 ISO disk that I'll be utilising for the other Windows Laptop issue?
Data on here is probably not worth keeping (handful of paint pics/word docs at best!).

Many thanks.

I am begging for help as this problem is driving me insane! To start the story Windows 10 asked me to upgrade last year, and God I wish I didn't. I had nothing but problems with the OS, mainly down to it being unsupported for my notebook by HP. I Decided to roll back to Windows 8 and during the rollback, the notebook has failed catastrophically! 'Luckily' the recovery option kicked in, but this also failed and crashed mid recovery.  I am now left with the boot failing immediatley and showing a BCD error 0x0000034. (press esc for UEFI). Once in UEFI the only option that doesnt bring the same BCD error is the HP System Test. This works ok and the system passes all tests (including hard drive which though a lot of searching online is often the root cause of the above error) I want to enter the BIOS settings and set it to boot from USB in order to use my windows recovery USB, but pressing F11 or F10 goes straight to the Blue screen of death with the same error above! I am fairly proficient with computers and managed quite a few repairs etc, but this loop of blue screen with no conceivable boot option is driving me insane! Someone please help! Thanks in advance, Thebgb!

This was bought as a Christmas present for my sister in 2011. About once a year I give it a "once over" to keep software up to date, and a couple of years back I swapped over the WiFi mini-board so that I could upgrade it to Windows 10.  It's been great most of the time, perfectly suiting my sister's light-user needs. However, since installing the W10 the Creator's update a few days ago, 2 of the 3 USB ports no longer work. I want to see if a BIOS and/or chipset driver upgrade will fix this but the BIOS flash update programme to install A14 will not run under Windows 10. (Gives error code 00000406). I found an old Dell Inspiron 530a in my house, it was stored because it didn’t work anymore, so I got in the job of restoring it. I found out the problem was the PSU, so I replaced it and it worked fine for about a week but 2 days ago, the computer froze for almost 2 hours, so I turned off the CPU. After that, the computer does not want to boot, I press the power button on the front of the PC, and it remains in an orange light, and in the inside, there is also another orange light in the Motherboard. The fans start very loudly and don’t stop until I unplug the CPU or I turn it off from the power button. I have tried these “solutions” for what I think is the problem:
Removing the Motherboard battery
Removing the RAM
Disconnecting the 24-pin from the motherboard
Disconnecting everything from the PSU
Switching the jumpers near the batteries
I don’t know what the problem might be, but I am almost sure that the PSU is not, since I bought it with a higher capacity than the original PSU and I have done the tests with a jumper in the 24-pin connector
The new PSU is a  “Coolmax V-500 Series 500W 120mm ATX Power Supply” and everything else are original Inspiron 530a parts.
Thanks for any assistance you can give me

I am missing right click options for recycle bin and I'm not sure how to get them back. They are associated with a program (system mechanic) so I've un and reinstalled that program and that did not help either. Any idea on how I can get options back?

so i am very use to having rightclick on desktop and create new bitmap files on desktop and now that option has gone away and i do not know why. see attached picture.

as for the reason i can probably guess and its most likely because i installed adobe paintshop as well as corel paintshop pro and now im stuck.

anything i can do to get back that create new bmp options? and no i do not wish to create new paintshop file and having to do extra steps as saving it as .bmp, too much of a hassle and i use this function daily.

please help and thanks!

A:desktop context menu, options missing

Hello M18XR2,

You might see if using step 1 in the tutorial below to restore the New -> Bitmap image option may be able to help. New Context Menu - Remove & Restore Default Menu Items
If not, then downloading and merging the .reg for the listed BMP option in the tutorial below may. It will restore the default associations for .bmp files.Default File Type Associations - Restore
Hope this helps,

I have a dual boot installation with Windows XP and Windows 7 on the same drive with two partitions. Both work just fine.

However most times that I boot from a cold boot, I get NO Boot options menu, just a blank screen and the hard drive light glows red, but it doesn't really seem to be doing anything.

If I press the reset switch, everything works just fine, the computer reboots, I get a boot options menu for selecting the operating system and either one boots up just fine.

If I shutdown the machine for any period of time, I'll get the blank screen until I do a hard reset.

It seems like the boot loader is not finding the ini file with the options, but only on a cold boot? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Long shot, but could it possibly be a dead CMOS battery?

hoping somebody can assit here.  I have an old Inspiron 530 mini tower desktop.  Not sure of the uP or MB model.
Got it new in 2007 and it has been generally a reliable PC, had one raid drive fail which I replaced and recently video card has failed so running off embedded VGA port.  Power supply has just failed and replacing that with one from ebay.
Now I know 99% are thinking buy a new one!  Finances don't allow that but I could probably afford some upgrades if cheap enough.
Replacement Video card is easy however I'd like a bit more grunt to deal with the new OS WIN10 & associated programs out now so looking at potentially a MB upgrade.
Can anyone advise suitable upgrade option for a Dell MB that that would fit the mini tower and power 300 W supply?

thanks in advance.

A:Dell Inspiron 530 upgrade options

I suggest an SSD boot drive and a Sapphire 6450 video card rather than a new motherboard. The IO shield of the 530 is non-removable, so you'd have to modify the chassis to fit a different motherboard. And, Socket 775 is long obsolete, so there are no modern choices available (with features like SATA 3 and USB 3).

Hello, just purchased a dell inspiron 660, it's great, and it boots up really fast, it's got an i5! I love it! Only problem is there are no bios options showing on startup. (Just the dell logo, and a rotating wheel, then it goes straight to the login screen)

I tap f2, and f12, but nothing happens, it just continues on to the login screen.

Maybe it's not a major problem but I always like to see if there are options I can change in the bios.

A:Dell Inspiron 660, No BIOS OPTIONS

Perhaps your method is incorrect.

Restart your computer.
At the first text on the screen or when the Dell logo appears, tap F2 until the message Entering Setup appears.

(i am also recovering from a win32.parite infection)
Note the files were to big so i will need some other way of getting them to you
