Blocking printer firmware updates.

Q: Blocking printer firmware updates.

Preferred Solution: Blocking printer firmware updates.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

If I understand this right, once a printer updates the firmware to a new version, then it is stored within the printers memory and can not be rolled back to a previous version. How do I insure that my printer can not install software updates. If I do not see the brand name, such as Cannon, listed in the items allowed through my Windows firewall is that good enough? Or could an update sneak through a program like Bonjour?
Can I just remove Bonjour? I think that I do not use it for anything?
Please advise if I have this thread in the wrong sub-forum. Thanks.

A:Firmware updates from printer not wanted.

What model printer, most will not update firmware without asking you unless its software/drivers have a component that is set to look and do it automatically and you can normally turn that off. Also you should mark your thread as unsolved unless it is.

This is an inconvenient delay, not anything serious. Running Windows 7, if it makes a difference.

Issue: Microsoft Security Essentials auto-updates block Microsoft Updates until MSE is finished.

Description: I have Microsoft Update (or Windows Update, whichever it's known as in 7) set to automatically check for updates but not download or install without my approval. I do this so I can review what's being updated, (I'm a little wary of Microsoft putting an anti-piracy app in as a "critical" update in the last year or two). Anyways, when I boot up the computer, it checks for updates and alerts me of them.

However, Microsoft Security Essentials also auto-checks for updates upon boot, and if it has an update it will automatically being downloading and installing it in the background. Which is all well and good, except whenever that's happening it causes MU to "fail" updates until it's done updating. Thus, I have to remember to wait until the MSE update is done, then run the MU update.

Question: MSE definition updates are included under "Optional" updates in MU, is there a way to make MSE stop updating independent of MU so I can queue all the updates together? I feel like this would be the easiest way to prevent this annoyance. I don't see an option, and I'd rather put up with this annoyance if the only solution is to put all updates back into Microsoft's hands completely.

A:Microsoft Security Essentials updates blocking other windows updates

My understanding of MSE is it will check several times during the to make it has the latest updates. Most GOOD VA programs will do this as there are several releases daily for AV definitions. This is the only way you and your machine will be aware of these releases.

When some of these attacks happen, a definition is released, but as the infection is refined, the the definition must also be refined and/or improved. I use F-Prot on my machines, but I install MSE on the kids and grand kids machines. I have seen as many as 12 releases in one day from F-Prot, this is what is call" being on top of things".

So I would not want to rely on ME being the one to check several times daily on all of my machines to see if a new release has been made.

I'm running a T440s with two type A02 Ultra Docks. My OS is Linux Mint (currently 18.3, shortly to be 19.3). I have one dock (manufactured 14/06) with out of date firmware that I'd like to update to see if it resolves a problem (flickering display when laptop reconnects -- I've been using a KVM switch with two laptops). The newer dock is a replacement which hasn't exhibited the problem. It may be a hardware fault but would like to try a firmware upgrade. How can I do this? (ie., without re-installing Windows just to run this) My laptop doesn't undock properly -- I get a blank screen on both laptop and monitor. I know of but haven't tried the dockd solution available from github; I'll wait until I've tried a newer Linux kernel first. It would be helpful to know from now on what minimum kernel release is required for docking station functionality to work.

Do peripheral manufacturers contract with Microsoft to deliver firmware updates via Windows updates? If not, then how are they delivered? Do people like Linksys just wait for customers to call them because their routers fail absent firmware updates?

Let's say I unplug my router for a long time and just run the data directly to my desktop from my cable modem. Wouldn't I miss firmware updates? Assuming I did, they wouldn't just load automatically when I plugged the data line back into the router, right? I would have to go to the Linksys site and download and install new firmware in the router, wouldn't I?

I hope I'm not asking too many questions, but I've rummaged around Wikipedia and run the keywords through this site and I'm still not sure about this.
Thanks for your time and consideration,

A:How are firmware updates delivered?

Firmware is not updated automatically, it has to be downloaded and only if it addresses a problem you have
Rule of thumb with firmware is if your hardware is working correctly don't update the firmware.
If you install it incorrectly you can render your hardware useless,

Well, I have a Yamaha CRW2100E CD creator (16-10-40). I was very pleased when I had purchased it, some 5 months ago. About a month ago, however, it began displaying whimsical behavior - for starters, it wouldn't recognize Samsung blank CDs. It used to, but... now I have 25 Samsung coasters on my desk. Then, it began refusing to read disks just created with it, though they could be read by other CD ROMs (this happened only with blank CDs of a particular manufacturer).

I feel this is only the beginning. I went to the shop that sold it to me (#[email protected]#*&%^@!%[email protected]#$%!!!!). The guy there suggested that I go to Yamaha's site and install a Firmware update to my CD burner from there.

Now, as I understand, the potential for causing damage with Firmware upgrades is great. Guess it would be a good idea to try reinstalling the driver first, or installing a newer version of it, but say it failes, what do you guys have to say about Firmware updates? Recommended? Any caveats I should know about?

A:Yamaha CD Writer - Firmware Updates

Iíve never had problems nor do you hear of many from installing firmware. It isnít a very chancy operation if you follow the directions. I would do that first. Acer is the only manufacturer I have ever seen recommend not flashing the firmware unless you have a problem. Most recommend you keep up with the firmware updates even if you arenít having problems Ė an indication they consider it safe.

That burner isnít Yamahaís best effort. It has a smoke and mirrors fake burn-proof, it is the only 16X burner I know of that isnít true 16X and it is so noisy your neighbors probably know when you are using it. With their 20X they went to a true burn-proof, quieted it down and everyone had to go to zone-CLV by 20X.

I donít understand how it can make a Samsung coaster if it wonít recognize the CD. Firmware often fixes the sort of problems you are having though. Get the latest update for your software as well.

In our enviornment we've had persistant issues with Thinkpad T480 and Thinkpad T490 connecting to monitors and peripherals via the Thunderbolt 3 Dock. To address this, I've been working on building reporting on the Thunderbolt Firmware version installed on all relevant computers in our enviornment. I was having sucess with this by running something like PS C:\Drivers\Win\Thunderbolt_FW> .\FwUpdateCmd.exe GetCurrentBuildID "(.\FwUpdateCmd.exe EnumControllers)"However, the GetCurrentBuild ID switch has been removed from the new version of FwUpdateCmd.exe and the packaged "Legacy" version doesn't work with the new drivers/firmware (nor does detect1810.exe which I've seen posted in a number of threads). Are there currently any comperable ways of checking what Thunderbolt firmware is installed on a given machine? This is particularly frustrating, because this was working and now we have no means of determining what firmware people are running after this update.

710-14IKB with WIndows 10 Pro.I just wanted to post back on my experience with the update mess that accompanied this laptop release. Until 15 minutes ago, I was running on BIOS v2.01 but Windows showed that something wrong with the driver for 'Lenovo UEFI System Firmware 1.28' in device manager. Following Windows' suggestion I let it search for an update. It said the one currently installed is the best. In 'Devices and Printers' I let Windows 'troubleshoot' the laptop. It said the same thing but offered to reinstall the same drivers. After a reboot, I still got the same warning about the Firmware 1.28. Then I noticed that a newer BIOS version was available (v2.03). I installed the BIOS update and rebooted (with fingers crossed). After the reboot it STILL showed an issue with the Firmware 1.28 BUT after letting it reinstall again the error went away!!! So it looks like they are tied together. the Firmware reinstall didn't work until I had BIOS v2.03 installed. What do *I* take away from all of this?Lenovo really needs to work on its QA. Just booting up any one of these laptops with v2.00 or earlier BIOS would have shown anyone who isn't deaf that it's NOT ready to ship. Then we've got this firmware-BIOS-driver dance to get everything working properly without errors. My guess is that Lenovo performed little to no time testing when the new (IKB) versions came out, relying on the same drivers and firmware that worked for the old (ISK) model. Note, for those who are... My Satellite X200 was running Vista and I installed Win7 myself. I also installed Tempro.

Now Tempro offers me 4 firmware updates dating back from 2008. The readme text warns me to check the FW version first using Toshiba disk creator.

But I don't have this program installed any more and I don't know where to find the FW version without it.

Should I install Toshiba disk creator first (but I didn't find a Win7 version for my x200) ?

Or can I go ahead and install the updates without checking the FW version ?

Thank you very much for your advice

ROCA (CVE-2017-15361) has been out for some time and yet I have not seen, unlike most all other major PC manufacturers, ANYTHING on any MS website concerning a firmware patch for ROCA.

No updates, ETAs, We're working on it, etc.  It seems to me that they hope it just stay quiet.

I did, however, open a ticket with MS Support and was told by the Escalation tech that ROCA and the Intel J-Tag vulnerabilities were considered to be LOW RISK and would be patched eventually, no ETA.  This was after the various front line staff I spoke
with had no idea what I was talking about.

I'm hoping someone on here has heard or read something from Microsoft to help restore some confidence in the brand.  I'm definitely considering a strong suggestion to stay away from MS hardware.

Let me start off by saying I did this to myself, I did not pay attention.

I rebuilt my system this week and this morning needed to scan something. So I pluged in my MP530 and downloaded the new driver for windows 7x64. I also grabbed the firmware "update" off their website. Here is the link.

So installed the drivers scanned the documents and printed out a few copies. Everything works fine. Then I remembered oh yeah that firmware update. I did read that if it was a specific model it would not be necessary, but I did not know the firmware version I was running figured it would say "Oh wait sorry but you don't need this." like most other firmware updates. So extraced the files and on I went ran the executable and set the install. Went out to lunch and forgot about it.

When I came back it had errored out, I looked in the to right corner only to then realize I was trying to upgrade from 1.10 to 1.08 and it was not compatible apparently. I figured old firmware is better than no firmware so I tried it again and of course failed again. At this point my printer is not responding at all and so I figured I'd have to call Canon to get the appropriate firmware. They proceed to tell me that they can not give it out. It's a private company firmware that they (Tech Support) can not access and yes it was a supervisors supervisor hat said this.

So what can I do ... Read more

I tried to update both Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware and both were blocked from doing so. My default browser is Firefox and it worked just fine, including Add On updates.

One of the two programs indicated my firewall might be blocking access, so I turned off the firewall with no joy. Began just looking at other stuff and stumbled across the fact IE7 was in "Working Off Line" mode. Refreshed it and got online, then closed IE. Tried updates again and both progs updated normally.

So, although I do not presently have a problem, I'm at a loss to understand why IE7 being in Off Line mode would prevent Malwarebytes and SAS from updating. Can anyone shed some light on this? Maybe even a guess?

I could be wrong about this - and probably am? But even if IE7 is not your default browser - it still controls your internet cache? It is part of a windows system file that is needed when downloading an update to any app. This would be my guess?

I thought from another thread that this was perhaps a firmware issue, and decided it was a good idea to update my firmware anyway. So I made a USB stick with Windows PE on it (I also tried Windows Recovery), booted into it, and went to run the executables I downloaded here. But when I try to run them (from the Windows command line, which is my only option) I get, for example: This version of C:\Updates\n17wn01w.exe is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information and then contact the software publisher. Only one executable ran, and it was the TPM Firmware Update utility, in particular "TpmFlash64.exe". It told me there was nothing for it to update.I get the following from running ``ver``: Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.17134.1] So I don't understand why the executables labeled Windows 10 on the Lenovo website won't run. My last idea was to build a x86 instead of amd64 Windows flash drive, in hopes that that would somehow fix things, but the X1 Tablet can't boot in Legacy mode, so I can't even get that to run. Any input would be greatly appreciated! I'm pretty disappointed that my touchscreen isn't working correctly. In any case it seems like a good idea to be able to update my firmware... Read more

this PC was great but not perfect for the longest time. It seems that suddenly any application is crazy slow and just opening windows takes 3-4 minutes if it doesn't crash first. Then the Adobe update and MS updates fail to install when attempted. In trying to just explore the drives each time I clicked either the + to expand folders or the 'folders' tab to explore side by side it would freeze and then crash. Once or twice while watching a video or listening to a file the IE would suddenly crash and restart all the while the application not noticing. I regularly scan the drives with Suprantispy and a few days ago I ran a disc check on the primary drive. I know there seems to be a lot of stuff on it and maybe too much. So I tried to eliminate a dozen or so gigs to give it more breathing room but it didn't appear to help much if at all. My past pleadings for help have been right on every time, I though wish it was a simple thing I could have done but your expertise is always the answer that humbles me. Thanks, Walrus
