Scanning and resolution issue

Q: Scanning and resolution issue

I hope this is the place to post this question. The digital photography/imaging was a possibility but was not sure.

I am running Windows XP - Home. I received an HP Scanner/Printer for Christmas and yesterday I scanned in some medical reports for my mother. I then e-mailed them to her for her records.

The problem comes in when I view them on my computer the resolution is horrible. It looks very blurry. When I printed a copy out from her computer - it came out of the printer real fuzzy and not crystal clear like the original report from the doctor.

How do I rectify this problem?

Preferred Solution: Scanning and resolution issue

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When I first bought my CanoScan 8800F and set about scanning my old slides I was a bit enthusiastic and scanned at the default resolution. The resulting images, when printed, were poor quality. I have now started re-scanning all 124 slides at 4800dpi (or is it ppi?). The trouble is that when I enhance them or change their sizes Photoshop takes ages to complete the operation. Should I scan at 4800 or 2400 then resize the images to 600 before doing any enhancing? Is there some way to scan slides so that they print at an acceptable resolution but do not involve hours of waiting? I also want to burn the scanned images to a DVD.

Hi guys,

I understand the difference between dpi and ppi. I get the concepts of digital imaging. However, getting things to work right with my scanner is another story. So let's just see if you can't walk me through this specific problem.

I have a website where I post little drawings I do in my sketchbook. Originally, I was drawing them in my sketchbook, redrawing them with in painter with me Wacom and then posting them. Well, now I have a scanner, so I want to cut out the middle man.

My problem is this: I get the scanned images to look right. They are either too big once in IE, or I shrink them down in size and the image quality goes to hell. The images are roughly 2 inches square. I want to scan them in, have them be approx. 8 inches square when displayed in IE at 1024x768 and have them still look good (not pixel-y).

There are about 10 images to a page when I scan them in, then I just crop each one. I am trying to enhance work-flow, so I want the scanned-in image (8.5 x 11) to be the right size/resolution from the beginning, so that once cropped, the images are ready to post.

There is another issue: file size. When I was drawing them in painter, they were coming out at about 14 kb. For some reason the images I'm scanning in, even when cropped down and at the same resolution are equaling 150 kb in size.

Can anyone help, I can't seem to get it.

Ok - First off Im using a 32" Dynex TV as a monitor, hooked in through a VGA port on the TV. When I start my computer the screen jumps around and it says 'detecting signal', settles on 640x480 during boot When windows 7 starts to open it jumps again for a moment and goes to 1366x768 (the right setting for it) I was playing Metro 2033 and its too slow in 1366 so I reduced it to 1024x768 which apparently the TV cant do, it just went black, so it reset to 1366. I was trying various resolutions, some were too wide too skinny etc and accidentally clicked on 1024 again, screen went black and this time didnt revert. I restarted my computer and now after the 640 phase in boot it doesnt go to 1366 like it should but at the opening to windows 7 where you put in your password it switches to 1024, after it jumps to adjust a few times it goes black like in the game.. it tells me detecting signal (normal) then no signal detected (which is what it tells me if I have it on say component 1 with my xbox 360 turned off, or video 1 with my dvd player off, or even VGA with the computer off for that matter)

What Ive tried:
I tried turning the monitor off and on to see if I could adjust the settings back while it was adjusting before going black, but it just stays black...

I started up in safe mode, which was 800x600 and it was ugly but worked, I tried resetting the resolution but it only gave the base options (640, 800, 1024, 1280) and that was only for safe mode, it didnt hold when I ... Read more

The issue is simply everytime I've used Etrust virus scan when in Internet explorer (have to be) I minimize it, and when I bring it to normal it's fine, but minimize it and bring it up when it's in the Java folder it freezes, should I do an individual scan on the Java folder to see if it has viruses or just make it a special do not scan folder and un-click it when scanning?

Hi, Often the applets stored from Java usage will trigger either a detection or an issue as you are seeing from antivirus scanners.

I'd suggest clearing the Java cache: see the attached screenshot, your version may be slightly different but you should be able to see where to look, and what to do. (The attached pic is from a slightly older version of the Java...the steps below are up to date, though)

Control Panel> (Switch to Classic View)> open Java

Find the Settings tab/button, and open that...then find the Delete Files button and click that.
It's just deleting the temporary files left from Java applet usage.

Then, after clearing the cache, run your scan again and see if it works correctly.

I'm having a problem with wireless scanning, which I think may be a wireless networking issue.

For about 18 months, I've been using Quicken with two HP Photosmart all-in-ones - a 6180 and a 7280 - in Windows 7. (Quicken allows you to scan documents and attach them to individual transactions.) I recently had to replace the older of the two, the 6180. I tried four devices - an Epson, a Canon and and two HP's - and found that none of them worked with Quicken wirelessly. With other software - PaperPort, MS Office Scanning - I had mixed results.

As they all had their problems, I decided to keep the device I liked best, the Canon Pixma MX882. One of the reasons is that it has a duplexing ADF; also, I found their tech support to be slightly more responsive than Epson's, and HUGELY more so than HP's (which should come as no surprise). In fact, one of Canon's senior tech people spent an hour and a half with me, but he couldn't get it to work.

Here's where I am now - I can only use Quicken with the device through a wired connection, and then only with the WIA driver. I can use the Canon driver (which allows me to use the duplexer) with PaperPort and MS Office, but, again, only wired.

The Canon tech felt it was most likely a Windows 7 security or permissions issue, but couldn't suggest how to get around it. The odd thing is that the older HP's have worked fine (the 7280 continues to do so). I remember when wireless scanning first... Read more

I've used Avast! for at least 2 years. Beginning 2 weeks ago, I started getting the message "Some files could not be scanned" at the end of a scan. Looking at the log revealed that all the unscanned files are in the system restore folder (C:\System VolumeInformation\_restore\. . .). The error message on each file is "Error: Archive is password protected (42056)". It repeats for EVERY file in the folder, including .png, .js and .gif files as well as the actual RP files.

I tried turning system restore off, which zaps all the restore points, rebooting, then creating a new, single restore point and running a Quick Scan. Did not solve the problem; every file in the folder is still "off limits" to Avast! EXCEPT when I do a boot-time scan (which runs before Windows loads).

Posted the problem on Avast's forum, but got no explanation. I realize it does not mean anything is infected, and it's not critical that Avast be able to scan the RPs, but the fact that it started doing this on 11/14 and now does it for every scan signals that something in the OS or in Avast has changed. Or might this have something to do with the fact that I have SpywareBlaster, a program that "immunizes" some registry items so spyware can't alter them (most HOST files)? Could the last update for that program have contained a change where it now immunizes the RPs?

Anybody have a clue as to what has happened here?

Hi, folks.

Installed the Epson WF 4740 All-in-on printer last week, added to my home wireless network and it is working fine for printing from all three laptops on the network. Copying and scanning at the printer are working as well. Also scans successfully to a USB key inserted at the printer.

Problem: Menu has option to send scan to a PC on the network. Says Document Capture Pro software must be installed to do this, which it is. But when I try to do this, menu shows "Cannot find computer". The menu has another dropdown to select a job, once the computer has been selected, and on my PC I have a couple saved jobs (scanner settings), but the printer won't detect them. I suspect if it would find my computer on the network, I could select one of my saved jobs, and the scan would end up on my computer.

I can, however, trigger a scan using the Document Capture Pro software on the laptop, and it works fine, including the scan winding up on my PC. However, if my PC is in another room, I have to go to the printer to insert the original, then go back to the PC, start the scan, than go back to the printer to grab the original.

Called Epson tech support, went through the usual steps the "tech" was reading off a script. Finally put me on hold, talked to "senior tech", said I need to make sure port 2968 is open on my wireless router, as this port is used by the printer.

We have a Canon imageRunner 1025N multifunction printer/copier/scanner in our office. Up until today, it was directly connected to one of our office computers through a USB cable. Now it's been networked. One of the functions of this printer is that it could scan in documents to the computer. But now that it's networked, the scanner feature seems to no longer be an option. As far as I could tell with the manual, the scanner will not work if it's networked. My question is that if this is true, can a printer be connected to a networked AND connected to a computer through the USB cable at the same time (without any functionality issues) so that we can scan our documents again? Any help would be much appreciated, thank you. (And if there is no one with an answer, any help directing me to where I could find an answer would be appreciated as well since I cannot find how to get help through Canon's website.)

A:Canon imageRunner 1025N Scanning Issue

You may just need to reinstall the Canon software from the CD and configure the scanner as being Network connect rather then USB. Also the brochure suggests the unit support Scan to Email and Scan to FTP, you can configure that if its network connected, that's generally how most Xerox units are setup at the sites I visit. The Canon website seems to very lacking, you may have better manuals on the installation CD.

But there should be no reason it can't be connected both ways, however the scan to email or a network drive would be better.

just wanted to find out, if there is a chance to somehow force an application - a PC game in this example - to adjust itself to a full screen mode.

I'm not really sure, how to describe that, since I've never met with a such thing before.

I start the game and when it launches, it is using only the middle part of my screen - so there is this game running and on its both sides, there are huge black stripes, which are filling the rest of the screen, so basically, it is running in a full screen, but I want to have it all over my screen, not only in a small square with black filler on left and right.

Also, I'm using a laptop for this, so there is no extra button for auto-adjust on the monitor.

Can this issue be even fixed via Windows? Or I should rather try to search for graphic card drivers or contact the manufacturer of the laptop?

Also, I though about this and it might be due to the so called wide-screen, but I had a wide-screen monitor before, bigger, but still, and there were no such resolution problems.

Also, no matter how I change the resolution in game, it still stays limited to that square with black background around it.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi everyone. I'm using Windows Media Player (ver 10) and having trouble with some .wmv files. These are Hi-Res files downloaded from a pay site, so I know the video is not the issue.
When I try to open the files in the player, they turn a purple colour and there's some flickering issues. I get no colours, just varied shades of purple. Yet, when I open these same files in version 6.4 of media player, they play just fine. No flickering, and the proper colours.
I wouldn't complain, except some of the videos are a bit dark, and need to have the brightness turned up a tad. Which ver 10 can do, but not ver 6.4 ... so I'd really like to be able to view the files in ver 10 player.

Any and all help, greatly appreciated. Thanks,

I clicked safe mode, because if you guys have seen my last thread, I had problems with Office and was told to go into safe mode. After clicking safe mode, it began booting, and the screen was huge. It told me it was configuring Windows because of the updates, but shortly after it told me it failed configuring, and that it was reverting the changes. It rebooted itself again, but didn't ask me if I wanted to go into safe mode or not. It rebooted without mentioning the configuration and I thought everything was going fine, until I got back to my desktop. The screen was huge and zoomed in. I checked the resolution, and it said it was 1920x1080 (the normal), but it sure didn't look like it. Some things stayed the normal size, however. For example, the mouse pointer is fine, but the close button in my browser is probably the size of what all three of the buttons (minimize, full window, and close) combined use to be. All of the desktop icons were huge and moved to one side (unlike they were in the first place), and the taskbar was probably double its size before this happened. Eve... Read more

A:Issue with resolution...

I would re-check the Video Drivers, make sure it doesn't say it is VGA Standard or something. I also don't believe it is really at 1920x1080 for you, but first I would definitely check the video adapter saying it is the card your system has. If it does, try playing with the resolution settings, make it go to another mode, then set it there, then try setting it back to the resolution you want.

All of a sudden my PC display has been very zoomed in with a poor resolution. I have tried and searched for every option I could to try and solve this issue.

I have checked all the obvious steps such as the Magnifier, Resolution setting (1024 x 768) and the change size of text and other objects on the display settings.

I have also completely uninstalled and re-installed the Nvidia drivers (375.95) As a note, I had this issue on the previous drivers.

I have also changed monitors and cables. The only thing I can think is the cause would be a windows 10 update?

It has previously worked fine for well over a month since I got the 1060.

Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated!

A:Windows 10 Resolution Issue

Read other 9 answers

The issue in question is this: I can't set the resolution to my LCD monitor's native resolution, which is 1680x1050 (22'' LCD monitor).

My PC specs are these:

- MS Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
- Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3.00GHz
- 8.0GB Dual-Channel DDR2 @ 398MHz
- Intel DP43TF (Motherboard)
- NVIDIA GeForce 9400 GT 1GB

I can't access any kind of NVIDIA control panel, or something of the like (it doesn't show anywhere when right-cliking on desktop).

When I try to update my GPU's drivers Windows tells me that I have the latest installed. I've also tried using PowerStrip, doesn't work either, specifically the custom resolution options.

The interesting part is that the resolution I'm currently using, which also happens to be the highest Windows' Control Panel seems to recognise for my monitor, is 1600x1200, which doesn't happen to be to far from my monitor's native resolution, actually, unless I'm mistaken, pixel by pixel 1600x1200 is a higher resolution than the native resolution of my monitor. All of these confuses me even more as to what causes these issue.

Bottom line, I've been pulling my hair out for two days now, I don't know what else to try, any help would be deeply appreciated.

A:Native Resolution Issue

Exact make and model of monitor please. We've done this before and it'll be fine. Don't pull any hair out. Most of us here like to save it and glue it back on Maybe start here: Force DVI/HDMI resolutions and refresh rates

I've seen a lot of these on the web, but still haven't found something that works.
I've got a Compaq Presario C360US with a Mobile Intel 945GM Chipset.

I've downloaded the latest driver from Intel and still can't get past the 1280 X 800 resolution
I used to get 1900 x 1600 or something like that.
And I want it back.

Any help?

So, I normally run at a 1650x1050 screen resolution.
I run windows 7, with a radeon 4350 HD video card.

I have had no issues with screen resolution, until now, It just won't go up to 1650x1050. The highest it will go is 1600x1200, which isn't what I want.

I have tried updating the drivers for my graphics card, but still, I cannot set the resolution to 1650x1050. Help?

I'm running a Nvidia 8800Ultra and an Acer Al3016W monitor, and after installing a new driver for my graphics card my screen resolution changed to a very low setting along with being in 4 bit color. After I installed the driver Windows asked if I wanted to fix the problem and when I said yes nothing happened.

roll back your driver, or get the latest update from nvidia.com, sounds like it isnt installed correctly, did you uninstall the previous ones?

I have a Windows 7 64-bit computer and a 22" LCD monitor. I downloaded updated AMD drivers. Now it recommends resolution of 1280 x 1024. However, when I accept that setting it creates a boxy image with a wife black stripe on each side (in other words, not filling the screen). The only setting that gives me a full screen image is 1280 x 800. However, that setting gives me oversized icons and text, even though the setting is "smaller - 100%."

Can someone suggest what to do to get the text in a little more manageable size?

A 22" monitor should be using 1920x1080 or something very similar. Do you not have that setting?

Next it would really help if you posted ALL of your exact system specs; ie exact video card, exact monitor, etc.

I know this isn't a graphics card issue, since my laptop was bought this year, and supports resolutions of 1600x900...

Now, I have some games that won't play in 1280z1024. It's any older game, and it's pretty annoying, I've tried windowed mode and most these games don't work on windowed. So, anyone have a suggestion? My ATI drivers are latest, 5650 Radeon with 10.10.

A:Issue with Resolution with Monitor?

Hello there DS, what games are we talking about? old games? new games? could you elaborate more?

Forget it, i just re-read the post.. hmm, could be the game not being able to play on a higher resolution than 1280x1024, which game is it?

I built my first PC in November 2014. Everything worked flawlessly. About 2 months ago I remembered I had bought a HDMI-DVI cable for my monitor so I unplugged the VGA cable and plugged in the HDMI cable and it caused red lines all around the screen (still could see the desktop but just looked awful). I figured the cable was bad so I then plugged the VGA cable back in and instantly noticed the quality of the picture wasn't crisp anymore. Like the HD was taken out completely. Before I touched any of the cables It looked amazing, even with just the VGA cable. So I ordered a new good quality DVI cable. Nothing changed. I did some research and tried different driver updates, installs and removals, tweaked settings in Nvidia Control Panel, and still nothing( I have tried this in all the different settings of resolutions offered).

So I decided to upgrade my Monitor thinking it may have been an issue with the monitor. I bought the Dell UltraSharp U2412M after some research. While it is a noticeably nicer monitor the problem still remains. Games look horrible, the lines are jagged and the screen almost tares when I move around. It doesn't have the HD pop like it should/did. I can not find any answers or even problems that are like mine. Any ideas or help would be amazing.

About a month ago I bought another gtx 970 to see if the issue went away. The result is the same. Games are also noticeably slower. This rig should be able to play anything on 1080x1200 with out any iss... Read more

Hello all, I have never, ever had this problem before. I have a Sceptre 22 inch monitor which runs at 1680X1050. Whenever I reinstall Vista it always sets it to 1920X1080, but it looks terrible so I set it to 1680X1050 (what it was made for) and its fine. With Windows7 same deal. But when I set it to 1680X1050 its really stretched out and I cant see half my screen. I installed the Nvidia beta drivers (I have an 8800GTS), and now im running with some 1152X864 with my screen in a small box in the middle left of the screen. When I set it to 1680X1050, it looks right, but its super left. I cant move it more right. What is going on here?

Are you using a VGA cable or DVI? DVI is the better choice if you have it.

This is a common problem for all kinds of high-resolution computers.  Some software is not equipped to deal with high-resolution devices and does not gather the scaling info from windows. You need to contact the software vendor for an update
