VERY SLOW Internet Explorer and Media Player Startup

Q: VERY SLOW Internet Explorer and Media Player Startup

Hello,

I have for the last few weeks, experienced an exceptionally slow startup for internet explorer and media player. When I try to start explorer, it freezes for about one minute before you can click on any links on the page. It also does this when a new window or tab is opened. Once the page has opened and the approx. minute lag has passed, it functions normally and I can browse the web. Clicking on any link which opens a new window will again cause this lag, but only on the new page. I can click back to the already opened page and browse normally. I have upgraded to IE 7 but the problem is the same.

For Windows Media player, a movie will open but no controls become available for about 30 seconds. Once the controls are available, it functions normally. If I leave the program open, I can click on different movies and they will pop up and function normally without the lag which is present on the initial startup of the program.

In addition, my on-screen ibm controls for volume have ceased to be displayed and my touchpad/trackpoint won't retain changes made so that only the trackpoint is on, with the touchpad off. It reverts back to certain settings upon computer restart.

I have run Norton, Adaware, cwshredder, AVG, ATF cleaner, Ewido, Kaspersky, Panda, fixwareout, vundofix, registry cleaner, and many others including the ones listed in the preparation section of this site, but the problem persists. A few weeks ago, I would get the occasional pop-up from drivecleaner, etc., but that hasn't happened in a while.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Here is my hijackthis log file.

Thank you very much in advance,

Tom

Preferred Solution: VERY SLOW Internet Explorer and Media Player Startup

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi Tom and welcome to TSF.

My name is Iain and I will be helping you clean your system.

There's nothing showing in your log, so let's try an online scan. Could be more of a Windows problem.

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan Click on located at the bottom of the page.
A "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click "Free Online Scan" *The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place*
Begin the scan by selecting If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
Click on then click
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Post back the Panda log.

Hello there and apologies if it has been posted before (though I couldn't find it anywhere). I have two PCs running Windows Vista Business 32-bit since the RTM version. In other words they have survived long enough to download updates via Windows Updates, install both Service Packs etc.For some time now I experience the 10 - 25 second delay when playing a MP3 file in WMP. This delay appears to happen only once per Windows boot. Now, this does sound odd so I've tried to troubleshoot myself. When playing an MP3 file WMP launches mfpmp.exe file and this is how it's meant to be even though the files aren't DRM protected. Using Process Monitor I've found that before the process launches wmplayer.exe "pokes around" %systemroot%\system32\catroot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE} folder. By "poking around" I mean querying file information (among other things) on most if not on every file. This introduces the delay during startup of playback as there are about 1400 *.cat files around. It can be clearly seen in Process Monitor summary that it takes even 25 seconds (depending on other hard disk activity) to "get through" the folder. It appears that the module responsible for file activity is CI.dll (code integrity). I would speculate that verifying the signatures (or whatever it's doing at this point) is a prerequisite to the launch of mfpmp.exe which plays the MP3 file. However WMP is checking the *.cat files that doesn't appear to be relevant to medi... Read more

hi all,

it's been a long time since I have had to post something about my problems in these forums. Well over a year as I have had my laptop for over a year now. This may seem like a similar thread to most that have been put up recently but I think it is quite different.

Ever since I have upgraded to IE8 I have noticed Vista be very slow. It could be to do with IE8 but I think that the slowness of my machine has been since before then...according to my wife. Has her facebook shennanegans broken the laptop???!

Here is a list of problems I am getting:
Long start up times. They aren't bothering me that much, just seem to be a bit longer than normal.
Very long time from when Vista has loaded and I can actually do somehting (15 minutes just now to access an mp3 on my desktop and it kept skipping for about 5 minutes before it stops skipping and playing the track normally)
Extremely slow at logging onto the internet. I mean that it takes minutes, literally minutes for IE8 to even display the very first internet page. After that it is slow, but not as bad...still frustrating though.
Changing between programs seems to take a few seconds.
Accessing my computer or my documents is like a game of russian roulette, will it let me or won't it.....£900 on it won't!!!!
On mp3 tracks, if you go back to a certain point in the track it will take a few seconds to actually complete the task

I have about 26gig free on my hard drive. But about 80 gig is used up for phot... Read more

Hi,

I've seached the forums but cannot find an answer to my problem. Until a few weeks back whenever I clicked on an MP3 in IE6, it would be opened via the IrfanView MP3 plugin, which is what I want.

Now when I click on an MP3, it gets opened by Media Player 9 in a new browser window. I've searched IE and Media Player options as well as the registry and can't find where I can stop IE using Media Player for MP3s.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

James

I had an item e-mailed to me , I went to that certain web site and the item was an audio one ..... when I clicked on it to play > I received a message that I could play it through IE and still surf at the same time ( or a similar message ),
but I clicked no and thought I would run it through Media Player. Media player came up and I received a missing codec message.
So, I thought no problem ...... I will go back to the item and this time I will run it through IE / PROBLEM being that when I click on the item it immediately opens into Media Player.
How do I get rid of this happening and go back to being asked to run it through IE ?????
Any help would be appreciated!

I recently downloaded a hidden object game from the internet. After I deleted it, using the control panel, Internet Explorer and Windows media player do not show up. They are both running, working and show up on the task bar. When I turn them on they appear to start opening then move to the right out of the screen. I have tried taking the computer to a previous time but this does not help. I downloaded firefox, which is working fine. Same with Itunes. But I am more familiar with the old programs and would like to have them back. Any suggestions?

Hello,
I have 3 accounts on my pc, 2 administrators and 1 limited. I am an administrator and the "problem user" is the other administrator. I am using Windows XP. The problem is: Whenever the "problem user" tries to open windows media player, an internet browser, or even an IM service, the "XXXX Has encountered a problem and needs to close." error pops up. The program opens for about 5 seconds and then the error comes. But when I log onto my account, everything works fine, as well as the limited account. I've tried google and even microsoft help and support and haven't found anything about this. This has just started today. I ran a System Restore, and that still didn't fix the problem. If anybody could help that would be great. Thanks in Advance.

i went to uninstall Outlook Express from Add/Remove windows components list by checking the boxand didnt realize that this was to install it and delete everything else. very confusing instructions.i then went to Microsoft Update to download IE7 and WMP10 and from what i can tellthey're still installed but hidden. there is no Internet explorer.exe to be found in the program files folderor exe in the media player folder.i know they're still there because if i click on the windows update icon it loads in IE 7and if i play a cd or dvd it loads WMP10.also they dont show up as an option when you right-click an item like an html file or an mp3 in the menu.anyone know how to correct this?

A:Can't Find Internet Explorer Or Windows Media Player

So have you looked din the directories and haven't found the executables?

Internet Explorer: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer (iexplorer.exe)
Windows Media Player: C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player (wmplayer.exe)

These are where the .exe files can be found for those programs .

So I just built this computer. It has been done for a little under a week now. I am relatively new to doing this kind of thing and I have been having this problem since the computer was finished. The problem I am having is that windows media player and internet explorer are crashing. I am running windows vista so it will pop up the little fix it messages when things like this happen. The fix it message reads...

Download latest version of NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller

This problem was caused by NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller, which was created by NVidia.

A newer version of this product is available that might solve this problem.

I have downloaded this and installed it but the problem continues to persist. The motherboard I am using is a NVIDIA NForce 780i SLI, as I said before I am running vista 64 bit, video card is a GeForce 9800 GTX, the processor is and Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 2.66GHz, and I have a 500gb sata hard drive.

I would greatly appreciate any help/advice that anyone has to give. This problem is really driving me nuts

A:Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player crashing...

Can no one help me? Would anyone maybe know any other reason something like this would be happening besides there being an issue with that driver? I have noticed those little fix it windows can sometimes be wrong. I was having an issue with Internet Explorer a while back and it was telling me it was because I didnt have a program for "smart web printing" installed. I wasnt even doing anything with printing... So I know that it can be wrong so maybe it is wrong now. I dont know where else to go though or what else may be able to cause something like this to happen...
I would really appreciate any feedback anyone has. Even if its just a thought. Anything helps!! :)

I bought a new Sony Vaio LS 25 E computer with Vista Home Premium & 2 G of RAM. I have it plugged into my DLink DI-634M router (not using the wireless capabilities). Previously, I had a Vaio with Windows XP before and had blazing fast internet and smooth Windows Media Center operation (with 1 G of RAM).

I use Firefox and the internet is painfully slow. Not only that but Windows Media Center is choppy and going through all the menus is slow/choppy/frustrating. I have not changed my ISP provider or anything else since I got the new computer. I use Norton Antivirus but have disabled the phishing filter.

Are there fixes or tweaks I can perform on this otherwise beautiful machine to make it run better? My other applications run pretty well but since I use the internet and WMP most of the time it has been a very frustrating few days...

Could it be my drivers (even though they came preinstalled)? Is it my router? Do I need a Windows Vista compatible one?

A:New computer - Internet & Win Media Player SLOW

I had internet issues with vista, the internet was working fine, and then it became really slow.
I had xp installed on the same computer, so I tried the internet through xp and it worked fine.
I tried absolutely everything in trying to find a solution. Through this forum we found that the issue was the driver for the network card. It had installed an update for this device 10 days previously, and it worked fine for the 10 days. So we didn't think that it was the network card.
Until someone saw the message posted on this forum, and had the same problem. He installed an older driver for the network card. So I justed rolled back the driver for mine, and bingo the internet was back to working fine. I don't know if this willl help, but it is worth trying. Good Luck

Windows Media Player cannot connect to the server hosting the content that you want to play. You might encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:

The name of the server hosting the content is not valid. If you typed a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) address in the Open URL dialog box, verify that the file name is spelled correctly and that the path to the file is correct, and then try again. If you clicked a link on a Web page, the link might not be valid.
The server is not available (for example, the server is busy or not online). Try again later.

I have windows XP with SP2

My PC seems to have developed, for no reason the following problems. Iv'e had my HJT log checked and cleaned but the problems still persist.

Search companion - when i go to the start menu and click on search, the search window opens. i see the little dog in the blue box to the left of the window but nothing else. there is no where for me to type anything to search for, no buttons to click to start the seach, nothing.

Windows Media Player - Whenever i try to use windows media player i get a message which says internal application error. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling. when it gets to the end of the reinstall it says internal application error.

Internet explorer - I am no longer able to open various web pages eg www.real.com and the windows update page, also pages which show calenders ie the type of ones you get when booking flights or holidays to help choose a date. I click on the link but all i get is a blank screen. Along the bottom of the screen is the message done. Also a lot of links on the windows dont work. Ive particularly noticed this when attempting to purchase items from teh internet. It can't be a web site fault because i have the problem with many unrelated sites.

Any ideas? any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

A:Various problems inc search companion, windows media player and internet explorer

1) Open your browser

Click on View--->Toolbars-->make sure what u want is clicked on in there.

If not make sure its not locked and hidden

2) What version are u using? If 9 try 10. Also try a reg cleaner like regscrubXP. You can find it on Majorgeeks.com then reinstall

3)do u have the firewall enabled in SP2? If so check it to make sure that you havent set up firewall rules to block these site.

Also make sure u have Java enabled on your webpages.

4) Get rid of SP2. Its too buggy still and cause too many problems for its own good.

My computer has been slow lately. It lags and I figure I have spyware and such on it. I have ZeroAds, The Ultimate Troubleshooter, Norton System Works, and Norton Antivirus. It's a little quicker since I installed and updated these, but still not much better. I wasn't sure if these programs got rid of spyware or anything or if I should try some different software. Also, I wasn't sure if having all these programs to try and clean up my computer would counteract eachother and slow down my computer. Also, the time it takes to boot up my computer is a lot longer than it ever has been. Finally, my Internet Explorer doesn't work right. If I use AOL, the internet usually works right, but when I try Internet Explorer (because I don't have AOL at school), I get tons of popups even though I have ZeroAds and then Explorer just freezes and eventually I have to CTRL ALT DELETE it. If anyone knows how to help me it'd be greatly appreciated.

This started happening three days ago, and happens about once every day, and now, once every few hours.

After a certain amount of time, many programs will suddenly freeze, crash, fail to show a window, etc. For example, explorer.exe will become nonresponsive, internet explorer will crash, and when restarted, will lock up and become nonresponsive, windows media player will not produce a window (although wmplayer.exe is launched), and system restore will not display a window (although rstrui.exe is launched). Before the first occurrence, the programs work fine; however, after they experience that problem once, they continue to experience the problem. Also, they seem to be somehow linked; for example, if internet explorer crashes and fails to display windows properly/becomes nonresponsive, trying to use Windows media player later will not work either. I should also note that nothing is hogging the CPU during this time. However, some programs are completely unaffected. For example, Firefox 3.5.5 works completely fine, Office 2007 works fine, Process explorer works fine, along with most of my non-Windows programs. What I’m starting to guess is that there is some problem with my graphics related to parts of the operating system and programs close to it, but I’m not sure.

Most of the time, simply restarting the computer doesn’t solve the problem. I system restore to provide a temporary fix by going into Safe Mode and starting system restore from there... Read more

I seem to have a unique problem, that I've been searching for hours for a solution on. Anytime I try to load Internet Explorer and WMP, the window will appear for a brief second then disappear entirely. I look in to the task manager and it says neither are running. The computer I'm using was riddled with viruses and malware, which I took care of, although it seems that the damage done couldn't be fixed. Windows Live Messenger is giving me error 80040154, and I've followed the solutions, none of them worked. I think that ultimately, something is preventing ActiveX from working, which is stopping all three, because I've noticed one thing in common for all three applications, that Internet Explorer is absolutely required for them to work. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling up to IE8 or 9 and it still won't start up. Games such as Anarchy Online, that have an ActiveX control on the login screen, do the exact same thing, a flicker of a window then it shuts down immedietly. I can find no work around, no repair utility, or anything. My OS is Windows Vista Home Premium x86. Also, a few things I've noticed that I think are related because they came up at the sime time, anytime I install something and it tries to make a link on the desktop, it comes up with an error. I can put one on myself, but Windows Installer can't seem to do it. On top of that, whenever I'd bring up something that would let you say, search for a file through Windows,... Read more

<My Media Player keeps opening at start-up. I believe this is a trojen related activity as there is nothing in my start-up files, nor are there any hidden files that are causing Media Player to start-up. I even tried deleting the entire windows media player directory and it keeps "starting up" at start up.

I read some earlier advice on this site regarding this and I followed it, I ran Highjackthis. Attached are the complete contents of the log....

I am soooo frustrated with this problem, if you guys can help, not only will I donate money for this site, but I'll name my first-born "Techguy".....Even if it's a "Girl!"

user561,
Method 1
Reinstalling the Windows Media Player:
1. Go to Start and in the search type "Turn Windows features On or Off".
2. Click on "Turn Windows features On or Off".
3. Browse to the Media Features and place a check mark in front of Windows Media Player.
4. Restart the Computer.
Method 2
You can try using the Windows Media Player Settings troubleshooter to automatically find and fix some common problems.
Open the Windows Media Player Settings troubleshooter by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter , and then click Troubleshooting . Click View all , and then click Windows Media Player Settings .

I am trying to run Media Player Classic - Home Cinema on Vista, and every time I start up the program, it instantly crashes. This happens both when trying to play any file and when directly opening it.

Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

Hi Wili,

Try un-installing and re-installing the program and see if that helps out at all. Hope everything works out well for you.

My laptop is running windows 8.1 (64-bit) which *is up to date. When I start my Windows Media Player,it always shows "updating library" regardless of the fact whether I've added any new music or not to*my laptop. During that process *it hangs like hell. I cannot do anything in*it. This remains for 2 minutes or so. After that, the player works perfectly. What should I do to fix this error?*
I always run CCleaner software to clean up unnecessary temporary files before shutting down my laptop at night.*

I am running Windows XP Home Edition and about a month ago the Windows Media Player started opening when any user Logs in to their desktop. I have checked all my options within the Tools...Options setting within Windows Media Player to no avail. Also I have checked "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup" and there is no shortcut there. Has anyone ever seen this before? Where else can I check to rectify this issue?

A:Windows Media Player Appears on Startup

Start/Run Type: msconfig

On the Startup tab you can uncheck anything you don't want .As a general rule,I don't allow anything to startup except my firewall and antivirus.
