DropboxUpdate.exe generating UAC requests & update error 0x800040002

Q: DropboxUpdate.exe generating UAC requests & update error 0x800040002

About 2-3 weeks ago, I started receving 5-6 UAC requests per day from DropboxUpdate.exe. See attachment UAC_message1.jpg and UAC_message2.jpg. These messages all point back to registry entries for DropboxUpdate.exe with data {49423331-2B41-4EDE-838E-F8C8F3F6BF62}. See attachments DropboxUpdate_registry_entry1.jpg, DropboxUpdate_registry_entry2.jpg and DropboxUpdate_registry_entry3.jpg.

When this UAC problem started, the Dropbox version I had was 3.14.x, Dropbox would not update itself and I received a waring from Dropbox that syncing would stop because Dropbox could not update itself. I d/l the offline Dropbox installer (3.16.1) but when I ran it, it gave me an error "Dropbox Update installation failed with error 0x800040002." Thinking this updating problem might be a firewall issue, I allowed dropbox.exe and dropboxupdate.exe through firewall, and then I disabled the firewall, but still the same DB error message and no update. Finally, after starting Windows in safe mode, the Dropbox 3.16.1 offline installer did run and the DB version is now 3.16.1. I though that the problem with UAC and DB updating was solved, but about 3 days later, the UAC messages are back. I did a trouble ticket with Dropbox, but their response is that the update error 0x800040002 is an OS problem.

Anyone seen this problem? Any thoughts on how to fix? Is this possibly a corrupt registry entry? I'm grasping for ideas here.

> Recently I am seeing these pop up's for updating.   Are they safe?> 1.  Evernote> 2.  7-Zip> 3.  Out of date driver detected> How do I know when a pop up is safe to download? They are "safe", but they are commonly called 'PUP' (Potentially Unwanted Programs). Chances are that you do NOT need any of these programs on your computer. Also, some of these 'PUPs' will ask you to "pay for a subscription".  Do not! I would access "Add/Remove Programs", click to select each program, and click "uninstall".

I am attempting to repair my brothers PC. I am not experienced in hardware at all. I have a recovery disk for his PC which is Fujutsu Siemens SCALEOT AMD Athlon64, nvidia g-force FX. Dont know the motherboard number without the PC running.
The PC started powering itself off. Even when I put a Recovery disk in. I have tried many hours till eventually it stays on long enough to load up files on PC, then after selecting new install fresh, it goes into 34mins left and a box appears. Asks me to pick Y or N to 'Software for VIA Bus master IDE controller has not passed its windows logo testing. Blah blah-it could impair system using it. I have tried accepting either Yor N and the mouse then disappears from screen. Another box appears then saying SOFTWARE for Standard dual channel pci ide controller has failed logo test also. I cant select anything without the mouse so then I have to turn off the PC via the power switch on the back. The software seems to working in the background and shows XP is moving. The minutes seem to stay at 34 though waiting for my selection.Intermittently the PCpowers itself off. How can I get some free drivers for this machine. Do I need precise information? How do I load them up? Is it through F6 when starting afresh. Could I get machine specification through exploring Recovery disk? Help! Please!

A:PC powers itself off + it requests driver update.

Sounds like an overheating problem.

Blow out any dust built up inside the chassis. Remove the chassis panels and run it. See if the system doesn't shut itself down.

When the BIOS detects the CPU or MoBo temps are too high, it cuts the power immediately.

I'm running Windows 7 on a PC and I keep getting repeated requests for Java updates via the Java Auto updater. Should I do it?

A:repeated Java update requests

If you really feel that you do want and need java then install the latest version from www.java.com press the red download java now button

If you continue to get update prompts after that, then it means the prompts are fake and malware related. Let us know

Short version of long story;
Did the WIN10 upgrade which failed. Microsoft chat, as well as DELL, recommended I go back to Win7 with the revert option, which I did. Everything works BUT, now, I get a pop-up telling me to reboot to finish installation of updates. I have literally rebooted 36 times in a row and the pop-up comes back. I ran the update troubleshooter and it found corrupt files and registry errors. Still does it after that fix. Ran Microsoft "fix-it" for the updater and no luck.

The update screen shows Last Update = Never. Most recent check for updates = never.
The installed updates screen shows dozens of updates and are up to date.

Something is not "set" somewhere as the PC thinks it needs rebooted to finish updates. I hate the thought of a total install of WIN7 or can I do some kind of overlay?

I have an include file(db.inc) which contains the following:

$input = substr($input, 0, $maxlength);
$input = EscapeShellCmd($input);
return ($input);
}

The file I am having the problem with is my view.php file. I get the following error:

Line 4 contains the following:

$file = clean($file, 4);

My view.php does have the line:

Does anybody have any idea what the issue might be?

I am troubleshooting the installation of 2 video cameras on my HP pavilion dv6 laptop. System info is attached as a text file. I was able to get the latest driver from the manufacturer and after running their driver installer, I got one of the cameras to work no problem. The other one is not working. I have been working with the manufacturer on this problem but we ran into a glitch when Windows 7 did not produce the expected error log for them to evaluate so they could see what exactly the problem is. Now both cameras have the same specs and use the same driver, one is black and white, the other color version. The color one which does not work, works fine on other machines. Apparently when the cameras are loaded, Windows produces a log file under windows>inf>setupapi.dev.log. My instructions were to delete the original log file and start fresh. Once the file was deleted I plugged in the first camera, waited for light to come on, then unplugged it, then plugged in color camera and waited for sounds of drivers loading but no light comes on there. Then I unplug that camera and open the inf directory but I do not see any log file there. The camera support folks are saying that it's a Windows 7 issue on my machine why no log file is generated??? Any ideas?

Hi all,

I have just joined this site. I work for a small company and we are currently using an external company to manage and run our Exchange server. We are experiencing problems whereby users when logging in are receiving a message to say Outlook did not close properly and if they would like to send an error report. When checking the processes in task manager it appears as if Outlook doesn't shut down properly as the their is a process called 'Outlook.exe' still running even though they have completely come out of Outlook. I suspect that it maybe something to do with the users not logging out of the Exchange server properly, but I am not certain of this. Please help, thanks.

Hi,

This all started a couple of days ago, and I feel like I'm just running in circles now what with every other site suggesting I try something that I've already done before.  Anyways, I have a pretty insanely stubborn virus right now that -- not sure what all the technical terms here are, so apologies if I sound like an idiot -- adds a ton of (obviously) fake google search results whenever I use google (normal results appear at first, then a split second later the page sort of refreshes with the bad ones), just about every website I visit has a ton of really trashy ads inserted randomly on the page (eg "This guy knows 80 languages and he's 7!", or "weird trick for losing weight", etc. etc.), as well as almost always being redirected to a really poorly mocked up "flash update" page, or a popup for some other site.

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, google chrome as my browser.  I normally run MSE, but that didn't catch it.  Malwarebytes caught some stuff... might be unrelated though, as the virus is still here, Malwarebytes root kit didn't get anything, FixTDSS didn't find anything, HitmanPro found loads of stuff, but it keeps finding loads of stuff after 2 tries, so....???  Also, AdwCleaner found a few cookies, but nothing else.  RKill doesn't find anything to stop, and RogueKiller doesn't find anything either.  (Well okay I say "didn't find anything" but that should just be read as "didn't fix the big problem"...)

Well People, Just to give you some feedback, It seems that the in-place upgrade feature offered to migrate from vista to windows 7 has some flaws. This feature imports files which are somehow corrupted or modified ,which can result in a number of small "glitches".For myself i resolved this issue by doing a clean install and this was the fix.apparently some people do not think that the in-place upgrade should be available ,for this has created a number of small but annoying problems.Best RegardsGreg

I apologize for the lengthy post--I just wanted to provide enough detail. I don't know if some of this will make sense unless you play Counter-Strike:Source, but the memory error may be a more commonly known issue.

I'm posting here because I've posted it everywhere else I can think of to get answers (SourceMod Forums, Windows server forum on Valve's site, SRCDS.com forums, etc.) and have gotten zero answers. I also think this may be a Windows error rather than a game error, but something is causing it which I cannot identify.

I run a dedicated stand-alone Counter-Strike Source game server running SRCDS on Windows (on it's own PC from a home connection). The stock Counter Strike Source game runs rock-steady, no errors. I also run two game modifications: Metamod: Source on it as well as VIP Mod (with no problems at all). Been rock steady for months and I can also switch to running CSSDM (Deathmatch Mod) also with no problems. So basically, my Metamod: Source interface is correctly installed and I can run certain mods with no problems. Just to clarify, I'm not running VIP and CSSDM at the same time, I just meant that I can run them individually through Metamod: Source.

Lately, I wanted to try running other Metamod: Source plug-ins like Mani, or Basic Admin, or Hostitron, etc.. I've tried them all individually. After installing any of them on my server (yes, I checked that it loaded in metamod and I can see it running in console) they all run... Read more

Hey all. Here's my problems
In Zune Software, I can't login to the marketplace/social
In Twhirl (a twitter client) I can't login to receive my feeds
In Picasa (A Photo Managing Software) I can't login to upload photos to a web album
When I try to sync the time server, it can't connect
When I plug in new hardware, Window's can't connect to find drivers
And Lastly, when using Windows Update, I get an infamous '80072EE2' error

So, in short, SOME of my programs keep having their outgoing requests or connections blocked. My internet works fine. When I play games it connects just fine. When I use and IM client it works fine. But for these programs...not so much.

And the worst thing about it is that it's effecting more programs. Picasa and Twhirl we're working last week shortly after I installed Windows 7

Anyways, I've tried a bunch of stuff already:
Disabling Windows Firewall, Enabling it with the specific programs allowed through, disabling anitvirus in addtion to firewall, switich the firewall programs, telling IE to auto-detect my proxy (I have none), going thru cmd prompt and resetting the proxy (still don't have one), system restoring to when I first installed the beta (when Twhirl and Picasa worked) only to have them stop working

Oh, and I connect to my network wirelessly through a Linksys USB-G receiver, which gets the signal from a Netgear router, which is hooked up to a cable modem

So, to say the least, I'm stumped. And if ANYONE could help me out here, it would... Read more

Hello, like many others I have been suffering from bluescreens on a regular basis for the past week with this error message. Almost every time it happens it's while I'm performing a different task.

The first time it occurred I was playing Warcraft III
The second time it was when I was using Azureus
The next time it was when I was using chrome to stream videos.
It even got so bad that it started giving me bluescreens when trying to open hyperlinks in the troubleshooting threads here.

I have gotten about 20-25 bluescreens in the last 3-4 days. I have concluded that something stupid had to be happening with my ram, motherboard, or drivers on my computer.

Today I ran a RAM test and windows memory diagnostic. As expected, there were no errors or fails, so this ruled out the RAM and motherboard.

I just went into my device manager toggled hidden files on.
I found TWO little alert signs:
1) Keyboards - Standard PS/2 Keyboard
2) Mice and other pointing devices - Microsoft PS/2 Mouse
Unfortunately, I have no clue what these mean because I'm not a computer expert.

I use a WIRELESS Logitech keyboard, but NOT the mouse the keyboard came with. Instead, I use a Logitech WIRED usb gaming mouse.
Any hints as to what may be the problem? What could lead to my mouse and keyboard drivers requesting the completion of the same IRP? Do I need to uninstall the windows default mouse and keyboard drivers and only leave the ones for my logitech devices?

I could be wrong here... Read more

I have Windows NT4, service pack 6. Recently, it has developed a problem. It keeps generating these exe files in the system32 folder called aaa.exe, bbb.exe, ccc.exe, etc. I think Ive seen every letter of the alphabet so far, but theyre always 3 letters of the same letter. When it does that, Dr Watson gives an error message, and then I delete the file. Once it has generated the file, I lose my ability to copy/paste, the ability to fill out some forms online, the ability to open a link in a new window, and who knows what else. I restart the computer and it is fine, until it does it again.

Heres what Ive done so far. When it first started developing the file, Norton would pop up and show it as being infected with "W32.Randex". It did it a few times, and I ran a full system scan. It showed maybe 6 or 7 files infected, including explorer.exe and winlogon.exe. I restarted in DOS and deleted then copied fresh versions of these files from the Windows CD. I also re-ran the SP6 update to make sure they were updated, since the CD has the original versions before any service packs. After that, Ive done a couple full system scans, along with making sure the virus definitions were updated, and it comes out clean.

But it is still doing it. And it no longer would show the files as being infected, but it is the same thing so it seems something is infected. Someone suggested it might be spyware, so I installed Spybot along with its updates, and it found a bunch of stuff and cleane... Read more

Under define fields, I have checked the "generate history" box for a specific field. Entry rules is "none."

When I import info from an .txt file, it does not generate the history. It does generate history only if I enter the info into a record manually.

Why would it not generate when importing from a file?

Thanks for your help!

A:Not generating history in ACT! 6.0

If using the normal ACT! import, it either creates new records or over writes all the fields. It's not updating specific fields. So what would be the point of adding a history for each field?

If you wanted to update fields within the records, you'd need to use something like OakMerge

It's a popup, usually porn videoes are associated with pop ups. You can try using Pop Up blockers, but I never try it since I never had a file with a pop-up on it.

I'm trying to generate PAL tv signals using a PIC24FJ64GB002 (datasheet:
http://www.kynix.com/uploadfiles/pdf8798/PIC24FJ64GB002-I2fSO_94644.pdf)using a similar method to the circuit described half way down this page. The only difference is that my circuit needs to run at 3v instead of 5v due to using a PIC24 so I've recalculated the necessary resistor values and the closest ones I can find seem to be 220 and 470 ohms.

I'm connecting to the TV input via a scart lead connecting the video signal to pins 17 and 20 on the diagram on this page.
But I get no picture at all on the TV. It might as well not be connected.
I'm thinking one of three things could be wrong :-

My timing is out. I've posted the diagram at the end of this post showing the timing on the two pins for my test and as far as I can tell I'm generating the correct sync timing and the other signal is just some stripes for testing. How accurate does the timing need to be? I'm using the timer interrupt on the PIC to start each line 64uS apart.
I'm using the wrong resistors to mix the signal. Can someone check if I calculated the correct values to use at 3volts? How accurate do the voltage levels need to be? I chose the closest standard values, is this accurate enough?
I'm connecting to the wrong inputs on my scart lead? Everything I've read shows this as being correct though...

I am generating what I believe to be the correct frame sync pulses too. Although again, ev... Read more

Hi Everyone,

A little while ago I was working with a 60day trial of Microsoft Office, and also had the calculator program open.

I was preforming calculations, and copying, and pasting them into the word portion of the Office program.
When I finished what I was doing I closed both programs.

It was then, that I noticed two grayed-out Icons on my desktop both named desktop - Notepad.
Properties list them both as hidden files.

When I opened them one pertained to the 60day trial, and the other to calculator.

They start with:

[.ShellClassInfo]
[email protected]%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21799
[LocalizedFileNames]
Microsoft Office - 60 Day [email protected]:\PROGRA~2\MICROS~3\mui\oaa.dll,-103
Gateway [email protected]:\Program Files (x86)\Gateway\Registration\GlobalRegistrationMUI.dll,-103

[.ShellClassInfo]
[email protected]%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21769
IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-183
[LocalizedFileNames]
[email protected]%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-22019

I thought I could just delete them, but when I try to a dialog box appears warning me that if I do neither program will work properly.

I am not that concerned about the Office program because I plan on un-installing it, but I do not want to disturb the calculator program.

Would placing them back in the "SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll" Folder make things worse than they are or is there a better solution?

Dear amazing people who are kind enough to help out the other internet users when they most need it ,

Recently I've been trying to get rid of a trojan which McAfee identified as being QLowZones-15. It generates new dialers (or what I think might be dialers) which are stored in c:/windows/temp/tempxxxx.tmp.exe which try to connect to the internet but are now blocked by my firewall.

Things I've tried so far (list is not exhaustive):

- running Ad-Aware until it couldn't find no more
- running Symantec AntiVirus
- at some point I thought I removed it but at that moment the computer wouldn't boot anymore so I was back at square one

In this post you can find my HiJackThis log as it currently is. If you need more information, don't hesitate to request it!

I hope to finally get rid of this bugger that's been on my tail for some weeks now.

I would really appreciate any help in this fight!

Best,

Joris

Hi
I am currently trying to install a program that requires the generation of a licence key to activate it.

The generation program records things like the serial numbers on my processors etc. to verify that that the licence on the computer matches the computer.

However for some reason my computer will not allow the generation program access to this information to allow it to create a licence.

Does any one knw why this is or are there are particular programs that I have already installed that might be preventing this?

thanks in advance

Hello -
A couple of simple options if it is in C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Temp

First -
Please download and run RKill by Grinler.
A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear.
This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
Please Copy / Paste the small log back here

Important: Do not reboot your computer until you complete the next step.

Now:
Download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.
• Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
• Vista / Windows 7 / 8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator
• Click on the Scan button.
• AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
• Now click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R0].txt) will open in Notepad for review.
• Look over the log especially under Files/Folders for any program you want to save.
• If there's a program you want to save, just uncheck it from AdwCleaner.
• If you're not sure, post the log for review.

• Once you're ready to clean it all up.....click the Clean button.
• Click on OK and OK to agree to a Reboot
• After rebooting, a logfile report (AdwCleaner[S0].txt) will open automatically.
• Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.

• A copy of that logfile will also be saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder.

I've got a computer that I'm servicing (Windows 98) and the system resources were extremely low. I discovered the source of this is that something in the computer is generating tons of .exe and .dll files in the c:\windows directory and running them. I've checked the registry, run spybot, cwshredder, norton and stinger, and I still can't find the root. I can delete the created files, but that doesn't fix the problem, because it doesn't stop it from creating more. All of the created files have random names of just letters and it is also hijacking the homepage. At one point, the homepage was res://mzopz.dll/index.html#37049 for example. Let me know if you have any ideas.

Hello - I run XP Home edition and IE 6.0. The system was running fine using standard Norton Antivirus 2006, Zone Alarm Basic firewall, and SpyBot Search and Destroy. I do not have SP2 patch downloaded as it messed up my system back when it first came out - I do have SP1a and the other security patch updates. No issues at all with my system for 1.5 years. This morning I noticed system running very slowly, generating Pop up screens (I had not had those in a while), and when I closed those pop ups my IE ceased to respond and had to be manually closed, taking me back to my main desktop. At times I would click on a site listed in my IE favorites folder and be switched instead to a gaming or porn site - again, when I closed that site the system became unresponsive.I do notice that many of these pop ups are for a "winantiviruspro" site and an amaena.com software site. I get a pop up screen (very official looking) saying I may have been infected by the "blackworm" virus - I "x" out of it and it tries to take me to a software site.
