Preferred Solution: does changing extension really change the file format?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have been using this same Excel file for many years. I viewed on my new home laptop 2 days ago, using a 2010 Excel Version. It was created on 2007.

I opened it on my work computer, version 2003, and now get the above error message on both machines. The file can no longer be opened.

I have tried emailing it, still won't open.

I have chenged the file type to both .xls and .xlxs neither open.

I downloaded the program on the home page of this site, and it said no file issues, no known problems for this file.

When I click Open File, it still shows where I had the file opened (the file name in lighter gray font - but cannot open.) The original file is in black, and I can open. But, get that message.

I also tried to open and fix - and I tried both options, with formulas, and without formulas, and all it opened was foreign characters.

Any other suggestions? Or is this file gone? Unfortunately, my most recent back up is 3-4 months old...

just renaming the file extension right?
not the file association (ie which program opens the file)

highlight the file in windows explorer
press F2
change the name/extension to what you want
- may get an error warning about changing extension, ignore it

btw: to change the association
hold shift key and right click

My user is trying to download an .xls file from a bank, as he has done every month for the past few years. When he downloads it, he cannot open and view it, there is no data in it.

He has contacted the bank and asked them, they say the data is there. they have logged in under his information and it downloads correctly for them.

I have downloaded it correctly from the website under his credentials on my PC.

i remoted into his system and can see the file says .xls when it downloads but when it finishes installing it installs to his PC the extention changes as .html, and won't open.

i've tried manually changing the .html back to .xls but it won't open that way. he's running our company's standard IE6, noone else seems to be having this problem. I've reinstalled all of IE6's defaults but its the same problem
i've googled everything i can think of... i'm at a loss.

i'm wondering if he's downloading something thats defaulting .xls into .html, or something? i have no idea!

Every time I change the file extension of something I get an annoying pop up warning me that it might render the file unusable. I know this. If I change the extension and it becomes unusable I'll just change it back, big deal. Is it possible to stop this warning from displaying every time I change the extension of a file? I am guessing there is probably a registry value I need to change, I just don't know what it is.

I'm researching my 'Family Tree'. Recently my hardriver gave up the ghost. Fortunately I made a backup prior to it's malfunction. Unfortunately when trying to re-enter the backup file into a new programme, it will not except the file extension.
Background: Around 2005, I downloaded a "free" version of 'Ancestry Family Tree' from their website which used the file extension .aft
After purchasing Ancestry's 'Family Tree Maker 2009 Platinum' software, I find it's file extension is .ftm and won't accept the .aft extension.
I have contacted Ancestry re problem, but they were not much help, saying Ancestry does not use the .aft extension.
Can you suggest a way which will enable me to enter my backup file with extension .aft into the new programme!!!
Will appreciate any help offered... Thanks

I have a .rar file that Explorer considers to be of type 'html', per the Explorer 'type' column.

How can I convince Windows that this is a .rar file?

A:Can't change file extension

Hello Reviewboy, and welcome to Vista Forums.

This is because by default Vista is not able to read or open a RAR file. To do so you will need to install a 3rd party program like the free 7-Zip, open it's "Options" settings, and set 7-Zip to be associated to open RAR files.

Hope this helps,

I have a music file that I am currently unable to burn onto a CD because it is not in the correct format now. I am told by a friend that I need to change it from a ".dat" file to a ".mp3" file and instructions I have been given I have been unable to follow; i.e. here's what I've been told: -Use Windows Explorer to open any folder (assuming they did NOT mean Internet Explorer, I did a search to find where Windows Explorer is located on my system, and was taken to My Documents folder, where I followed the next step in instructions given, i.e. from the Tools menu, select Folder Options and click the View tab, next I was told to check the box that says "Display Contents of Systems Folders".......this I was not able to find on the View listings! These were my only instructions given and I suspect step(s) may have been left out to proceed with the change.) Can you help me in simple step by step form to change the format of a file as I've described it?

A:How to change a file extension from .dat to .mp3

The instructions are utterly irrelevant to the issue. The only reason to go to Folder Options > View would be to ensure that "hide file extensions" is not checked.

However this really belongs in "all other software" so I will move it there.

You will have to explain just what the ".dat" file is and how it got created and why you think it is an ".mp3" file.

If it's just a matter of changing the extension, you can simply right click on it and and rename it.

If it's a matter of actually converting the format, that's something else again...

Changing the extension portion of the name never alters the contents nor changes the file size.

Hi - I been having a problem recently with folders that contain any number of my pictures in .jpg format)

When i open the main folder containing them, I now see a folder 'ghosted out' (hidden) for each and every picture.

The hidden folder has two copies of the original picture - in every folder they are named : vcm_s_k_max160_160x120.jpg and vcm_s_kf_representative_640x480.jpg

As i scroll down - beneath all the folders there are the original pictures (at full size if I open them) - BUT they have the file extension (.jpg) renamed to .jpg.files
I have tried to change the filename back it wont let me. It also does the same to .avi's

Oh.. and if i do a virus check on a single file - Mcafee reports 2 files were scanned and no virus was detected. If I do it again it says 3 files were scanned and no virus was detected!! lol!

I wonder if this is quite a new virus as I have spent quite some time on the web looking to see if anyone else is having the problem, but cant find anthing specific to this change of extension - its damn annoying cos I am a keen photographer and use my pc for images a lot!

I would really appreciate if anyone can help on this!!

Is there a way to change the properties of a file extension? As an example: I would like "all" .txt files to be hidden.

A:Is there a way to change the properties of a file extension?

Hello Rwmol,

You could use the command below to set all .txt files on say the C: drive to be hidden. It will not hide any .txt files that are considered to be Windows 7 system files due to access denied though, but it will all other .txt files found on the C: drive.

If you like, you could substitute C with any drive letter that you would like to hide .txt files in, or substitute C:\ with the full path of a specific folder that you would like to hide all .txt files in it and it's subfolders.

OK.....so this is probably hugely na?ve, but I would like to make legitimate, playable versions of music and other videos that I have downloaded as Flash Video Files [.flv] to Real Player, and copy these to a CD/DVD.

I do have NTI CD&DVD-Maker 7x. Platinum Edition, and have tried to do this, but it does not recognise the .flv format.

Is there a simple way of copying the video clip and changing the file extension of the copy so that it will be recognised by NTI CD&DVD-Maker?

I stress, that I want a legitimate way to do this. If it can't be done, then so be it, and I'll forget all about trying to do it.

A:Can I change .flv file extension, and copy a video to CD/DVD??

You can use FLV Player (free) to play flv files.

MediaCoder (MediaCoder - more than a universal audio/video transcoder) will convert flv. GUI is cludgy, but it gets the job done.

This isn't an iphone related topic, but this is what happened. I updated my iPhone to 6.0, and I deciced to downgrade back to version 5.1.1. iTunes for whatever reason kept giving me an error where it wouldn't let me downgrade, so I looked into different ways to let me downgrade.

One web site made me go into C:/Windows/System32/Drivers/etc/ and change the "hosts" file to "hosts#_______" (they said to add this little extension to the end of it). I did so, and it changed "hosts" from a "file" to an "ms-dos file". The idea didn't work, and now I wish to change the "hosts" file back from an ms-dos file back to just a regular "file" but there's no easy way to do that apparently. Any ideas?

Everyday I upload some files to my website and to simplify my website operations, I use the same filename and just upload a file with new information every day. The case of file extensions is of no consequence to Windows 7, but it matters to my website. I want to standardize on one case and it doesn't matter which as long it's the same all the time. I have one app, the snipping tool, which seems to generally make files using uppercase, but I have some existing files that are lower case. I have tried to get rid of the lower case extensions by deleting the file and then recreating it with the same name. When I do, Windows changes the case from upper to lower. If I simply create a brand new file with no previous instances of that file in existence (as far as I know), then the default case is upper. How does one go about converting all existing files of a particular type to a standard file extension case, be it upper or lower.

A:Change file extension upper/lower case

Not sure you can as Windows is case insensative, but have you tried doing it from a Command prompt, enclosing the filename.ext in double quotes as "filename.ext"?

If that doesn't work, maybe a two step process would.

ren "FileName.EXT" FileName.EX"
ren "FileName.EX" FileName.ext"

I transferred many music files from a backup drive onto a new laptop running Win8, and found most renamed as numbered files with a .ptl extension. Found out that my backup drive (Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex) doesn't like long filenames and renames them as referenced above. ("ptl" stands for "path too long"). I have been renaming them, dumping the ptl extension to get the files back as mp3's, but I get a confirmation window that I have to click "yes" to for each and every change I attempt. I'd love to kill the confirm popup for every file I change, it doubles the time involved for each file and I have enough work just renaming the files back to their original names. I've looked all over the control panel for something to uncheck to accomplish this, with no success. Can anyone point me to the appropriate location to turn this off?

Open an Elevated Command prompt then use the ren command to change the names there. You could even create a batch file with the rename commands so all you have to do is run the batch command.

Something like:

ren filea.ptl filea.mp3
ren fileb.ptl fileb.mp3

Or do a bulk rename.

ren *.ptl *.mp3

then i phoned support in the UK who told me this is weird as the printer doesnt even support BMP

i have changed the output file format on the printer itself to JPG
and throught the web interface i changed that to JPG,
but when i scan it comes out as BMP (10MB) in size.

the tech told me that win7 must be changing the file format.

i get no search results regarding the printer and this problem, and to be honest the support guy seemed pretty lame.
i would never have guessed a 1200 printer would be such a task to change file formats...Ridiculous!!!

Why am i receiving this message? On my old computer whenever i renamed an F4V file to either avi or wmv i never had this problem but on this computer it never fails to occur. I've searched the software options and cannot find a way to change the default.

I think it may be a computer default? I think I saw a flash of something like DirectX when downloading, but I can't find that software on the computer. (And even if I did, I'm not sure I would know if that is the "fix" I need or if I could figure out how to change it.)

Nothing to do with the computer, according to the manual (just looked at it using Google) its a matter of the recorder defaulting to DSS format in SP and LP mode recording, and WMA format in SHQ and HQ mode recording.

When \Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Associations\ does not know which app should open a file type, it assigns a blank-sheet-of-paper icon to the filename.  In my case, I use a popular .html editor called NoteTab (Fooke's

So, I ended up binding .udt to NoteTab 7 in \Default Programs\Set Associations\.  This might not otherwise be a big potential problem, were it not for a registry search on ".udt" yielding the following 9 keys ...

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1334085195-1259877840-... Read more

A:How can I change .udt file extension back to "Unknown application" ?

Using regedit, navigate to the merged HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT hive.
1. In the left pane scroll down to your .udt extension, highlight it and make a note of the value of (Default) in the right pane. This is the file type, so scroll further down past the extensions to this file type (it may not exist). If it does, right-click
it and choose Delete (this will also remove all sub-keys).
2. Scroll back up to the .udt extension, right-click it and delete it. Close regedit, you may have to restart the computer.
To be safe, I suggest you create a system restore point first, just in case something goes wrong.
3. To understand extensions, file types and their associated programs, an easier to understand example of the above is a .txt file, which we all use in Notepad:
Using a CMD prompt and typing assoc .txt will return txtfile (the file type).
Typing ftype txtfile will return %SystemRoot%\System32\notepad.exe %1 (The full path of the program that opens when the file is double-clicked and %1 representing a passed parameter)
Alternatively, look in the registry hive HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT for .txt and further down for txtfile.
I hope this helps.

Everytime I try and change the default program for an extension to something else, its icon gets messed up.

For example,

I am using WinCDEmu ( WinCDEmu - A free CD/DVD emulator for Win32 and Win64 ), and want to mount an .mdf, but unfortunately, the .mdf has not been automatically associated, so I manually do it in Default Program. But when I am done, the icon for the file gets messed up and looks like this:

The icon, should look like this though:

What can I do to fix the icon issue?

A:Changing default program for extension messes up the icon

It happens . The file will take load of the file icon of the default program associated . If you shift from WMP to VLC as your default music player, it will also happen .

There is no way to get back unless you get back to default default application .

Anyway, it's not an issue . It's natural .
