Forcing IE11 to open JPEG in a external program

Q: Forcing IE11 to open JPEG in a external program

Is there a way to define what program IE11 will use to open a JPEG? I know that you can download the JPEG but I would like to know if it could be defined in IE11 to open JPEGs in Paint or Photo viewer or some other external program.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have my TV connected to HDMI and a small, old monitor connected to VGA on a Radeon 4600 video card. I have Kodi (multimedia player) set to open full screen when the default user account logs in and it does so on the main monitor which is my TV. I have the smaller, older monitor set up so I can still use the computer when someone is watching a movie on the TV. I have multi-monitor set to extend the desktop. But my problem is when I open a program it wants to default to opening on the main monitor and when I open a program from the second monitor, it opens behind Kodi on the main monitor (and I have to click and drag it over to the second monitor) - so I would like to switch the old VGA monitor to be the main monitor and the TV to be the second.

Is there a way I can force Kodi to open and stay on the second monitor once I make my TV the second monitor?

A:Forcing a program to open on the second monitor rather than the main

So I figured out how to make the old computer monitor the "main" display. Then I figured out that Kodi has a setting in the program to tell it to start on monitor #1 or #2. So Kodi is good to go. But if I specifically want a program to open on the TV that is not the main monitor, is there a way to do so?

I run a couple of IP cameras on my work pc (XP Pro SP3) the viewer for which runs at startup. It always opens maximised even if I closed it previously in a modified window. As I want to shift it to a second monitor on an extended desktop I'd like it to open to a specific size window to fit the second monitor. Is there a way to do this.
Many thanks. Bob.

A:Forcing a program to open in a specific size window

Unless the specific application has some options setting to open using the previous window size and location, probably not.

Hello All,

Using OE6 on 98Se & unable to open attachements when double click on them. However, they are displayed in the text section.

Had been playing w/macromedia fireworks and my rcvd. attachment icons, in email, changed to FW. When I removed "fireworks" from system the icons reverted to default windows and when double clicked I get:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in my computer by clicking view and then clicking folder options."

Also, when I forward attachment I'm informed by recipient:

"isp quarantined your messages, they said they were virus infected."

and from my provider:

Your message has been enqueued and undeliverable for 4 days
to the following recipients:

Reason: unable to deliver this message after 4 days

The mail system will continue to try to deliver your message
for an additional 3 days.

I'm not a novice but an experimenter and I'm forever downloading, removing, deleting and tearing things apart for investigation.

I'm inclined to believe I'm just overlooking something as I have no trouble opening files, pictures on the PC, etc. with PSP or Irfan.

All suggestions appreciated.

Recently I acquired an LCD multimedia display with built in jpeg reader. I used the flash card with jpeg images on it, from my camera, to test it and the display's reader worked fine. Then I downloaded jpeg's from my computer onto the same flash card and tried to view them and could not. I then put the card into the camera and it would not recognize those jpeg's either, only the images made by the camera. Both would, however, open another jpeg image made by an earlier camera. All the images work fine when viewed on the computer and I cannot tell them apart by any means that I know of to get info on them. I have reformatted some to no avail. I also downloaded images directly from the web and tried them, same problem - once on the flash card, neither camera or the display's reader sees them. Since I have always gone the other way, viewing and reviewing photo images after loading them onto my hard-drive, this problem is perplexing and, so far, I haven't run across it in on-line resources. Any
insight on this would be appreciated.

A:external jpeg viewer won't read some jpeg's

With reverse viewing on a camera, the resolution and file naming structure and location (folder on the card) usually has to be exact or the camera will ignore the image.

Unsure about the LCD display, but could be a resolution limitation.

I have 7 email accounts on our Exchange server for different business and personal roles.  I have always used OWA instead of Outlook to segregate accounts on my desktop.  For quick logins I have been using "Keyboard Express"
Macro program  to insert USER and PASSWORD into OWA.   With some update applied in December 2015, Keyboard Express no long works on most of my Macro hotkeys because the IE hotkeys have taken precedence.  Such as ALT-H and other.
This same think happened to IE11 when I ran the Windows 10 upgrade 2 months ago, so I restored Win7 with a disk image to get rid of Window 10.
Is there a way to assign precedence between a Macro Program and IE11 Hotkeys ?

Hey whenever my computer is running I get ad popups every minute or so, that just popup from Internet Explorer, even when I'm just at my desktop. The page is called "about:blank" and the ads are just like celebrities and clothing advertisements.

Yesterday I thought I had found the problem, in the task manager I located the file to be called "xYFL87IT.exe" and ended the process. The ads went away but then about 5 minutes later I got another pop up, and it was back and running in my task manager

I then located two files, one was "xYFL87IT.exe" which was located in my C:WINDOWS/system32 folder and the other was "XYFL87IT.EXE-23DFB174.pf" which was located in my C:WINDOWS/Prefetch folder. I deleted them both which seemed to work, but then about 5 minutes later I got an ad again and both those files were re-created in both those folders.

I ran adware, spyware, virus and windows threat removal, and all of them found my computer to be clean. I'm not sure if there are more files causing the problem, or what to do in order to get rid of them. Help?

Hello all. I was hoping someone could help me out with this problem.

I have two displays. My first is 1680x1050, my second is 1920x1080. When I run an application, it always opens on my first. For some things this is a problem -- namely applications like Team Fortress 2 or XBMC, things which run in fullscreen and determine their resolution limits at launch. I want to play Team Fortress 2 in fullscreen on my secondary display, but it just doesn't want to let me.

The ideal solution would be some way to tell Windows that I want certain apps to open on Display #2, not #1. Is there some launch option that might do this, the way you can create shortcuts with "-windowed" suffixed?

A:Forcing applications to open on a second display?

Well you can tell the particular applications to open in Windowed mode and drag them to the particular display you wish to use. The Windows shortcut to move a window to the next display is Win+Shift+Right/Left

You can also change your primary display to the one which you'd like to play full screen applications on.

The more user friendly solution is to purchase or download an application which can manage dual displays a bit better than Window's native functions. Here's a list...

Realtime Soft UltraMon
Actual Multiple Monitors

As far as TF2 is concerned, you can use the launch commands "-noborder" and "-windowed". The first command will cause a windowed game not to show borders then second command simply forces the game to run in windowed mode. "-noborder" should force windowed mode.

To use these commands you can either append the commands to the end of the shortcut target line or you can add it to the launch options within the steam games window itself. Right Click Game > Properties > Launch Options

Hello All,

I use IE 7 as the default browser. And I have set the "Open links from other programs in" to "A new tab in the current window"

However, when other applications try to open a link, it always brings a new IE window, instead of a new TAB in the current window.

How can I force IE to open new links in the current window as new tabs?

We have apps that open multiple links at the same time, this causes the desktop to clutter up.

P.S. We can not use IE 8 due to some compatibility issues.

A:Forcing IE 7 to open links in the current window

Are you talking about links that you are clicking on that are opening in new windows? Because I had the same issue a while back where even though I set the settings to always open in a new tab it still opened a new window for a few different websites. If that is the case, if you have an external mouse with a scroll wheel you should be able to push down on the scroll wheel while hovering over a link and that should open the link in a new tab.

I had started a thread earlier here, called "Cannot change name of New Folder. Can't add Search Provider".

Well, I reset the system to a System Restore that was quite old, and the renaming of folders problem seems to have gone away (at least for now). However, what is really bothering me is that IE11 is keeping track of every file I open on my computer, and when I click on the entry in History, it opens the file!

I have disconnected the computer from the internet, but desperately need help in terms of what to do!!!

I have both Office 97 and 2K on my PC. Because most of our users haven't been upgraded yet, I would prefer to have 97 be the default when I double-click on a document. I know how to change the default, but if I'm not quick to hit cancel when Office2K does its install thing, my settings get overridden.

Is there a way in the Target of a shortcut to specify the program to use when I open that particular document? I use this one doc a lot, so I'd rather have its icon sitting on my desktop than have to open Word97 and then load the doc, but having the two versions can be a pain sometimes.

(I'm not sure--this might be a question better served by the Windows forum, but I'm giving it a shot here first.)

I have a Hewlett Packard Vectra desktop pc
Pentium 3, 930 Mhz, 128MB ram
Windows XP home edition upgrade
This is a very strange problem, it may have to do with my registry.
After running a registry scan and fixing errors, I noticed that all
my software programs that display any kind of html, such as
Outlook Express, my html editor, my keyword research tool, and
my webpage design software, will no longer display, but instead,
a windows screen pops up prompting me to either open the file
in my browser or save it, thus, rendering my software programs
useless. I have no idea how to fix this and I don't have the technical
knowledge for this type of problem. If need be, I will reformat
the hard drive and just start over, but would rather fix the problem.
I scanned the registry twice (mistake), so I don't think I can go back to the way it was.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I had downloaded PhotoShop Pro7 try and buy. And when I decided to uninstall it, I found that I couldn't open any JPG or JPEG files anymore. How can I fix this? How can I get the JPG format back?

A:Can't open JPG or JPEG Files

The best thing would be to reinstall Photoshop, associate it with all image files (there must be something like that in the options of PS), and reboot.

Now go back to the options of Photoshop, restore the Windows file associations again, and reboot once more.

Finally uninstall Photoshop in Add/Remove Programs, and reboot one last time.

Now you should be able to view jpegs again.

Alternatively, download and run http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Music/9899/Preview.ZIP

It should restore the Windows file associations for JPEGS and some other image file types.

Good luck,

For several weeks now, I have had trouble opening .jpg files. I had no trouble inserting them into documents, or viewing them in documents, but I had to open HP Photo and Imaging in order to open the files directly. Ever since upgrading to Office '07 I haven't even been able to insert them into documents. I am able to use .tif and .bmp files, and sometimes .gif. No matter how I try to rename or save as, I can't change the file type. The best I can do is [filename].gif.jpg.

When I try to open a .jpg, I get an error message that says:
"[filepath][filename].jpg is not a valid Win32 Application"

Files that are already .bmp open with Windows Office Picture Manager.

It doesn't matter whether I insert a .jpg or a .bmp, I still get the same tiny box without resizing handles. Office '07 does not recognize it as an image, but rather as text.

Try the free Irfanview. It can open and identify nearly any image format. It may even be able to correct errors. Download and install the plugins, too, to increase the program's functionality and the number of formats it supports.

It can convert from one type to another---just open the picture with the program, then go to File, Save As, and choose the format you would like in the dropdown box.

But, i can create a new psd/jpeg file with photoshop and they're perfectly fine.
Is this the work of some kind of virus? If there is anyone that could fix this, i would really appreciate that. Thank you very much.
Note : I have tried retrieving some psds and jpegs with recovery tools, and they fix nothing.

These images are very important to me - can anyone advise me how to open what seems to have become a corrupted disc? If you can I would be very very grateful. Thank you for reading this.

A:jpeg and bmp files won't open any more

There are several programs around that will try and recover files from a CD, the better ones probably cost a little more.

The above link would be a typical application. Many will allow you to see if a recovery is possible, but will not actually recover unless you buy the program.

If I can make a suggestion though, please consider never "adding" to a CD, when it contains such valuable images. You place the entire contents at risk when you do so, as the entire "table of contents" has to be re-written in total and any corruption then affects all files on the CD.

I am having a similar problem as someone else on here but the thread was closed before the problem was solved. I took some pictures with my digital camera and without dropping it or damaging it in any way, it said the card could not be used, even though it had just been working fine. I plugged the SD card into my laptop and it said there was an I/O error. I have Windows Vista. Anyway, I ended up finding software to get some pictures uploaded from the SD card and the images are all JPEGs but they won't open on Windows Photo Gallery or Paint. For Windows Photo Gallery it says "Photo Gallery can't open the video or picture. This file is not supported, or you don't have the latest updates to Photo Gallery." For Paint it says "Paint cannot read this file. This is not a valid bitmap file, or its format is not currently supported." I tried converting the pictures with some software I found on the internet but they didn't convert. Do you have any idea what the problem is or how I can fix it? Oh, and after I did all this, the SD card worked in my camera, but it had no pictures on it. Are the files corrupted some how?

A:Changing program default for JPeg files

Welcome to the TSG forum.

I assume you want them to open in Windows Photo Gallery as your default viewer.

Right click on a image (the file type) you want to change ...
choose Open With >> Choose Default Program >> and browse to find Windows Photo Gallery.

Personally ..
I've replaced WPG with freeware Irfanvew as my default Viewer and Basic Image Editor.

In Irfanview's options .. You can tell it to be the default for all Images.
You can also tell Irfanview to make APE 5 the "extended editor"

Irfanview and Photoshop are the only two Image programs I use.
They play together very well.

The photos were taken with various cameras and some are scanned photos; there is no correlation between this and the ones, which are missing. The file names are in tact and the file size seems consistent with the non-missing photos (2 MB for jpg and 5 MB for tif files); however, the thumbnails appear just as enlarged icons. I have Windows XP and they are simply in the my pictures files. Thank you for any help you can give me, these are of my little girl, and we all know that those cannot be replaced. KellyE

so, when you double-click on the little thumbnail versions of the pictures, they don't open properly? what program(s) have you been attempting to open them with? also, are they saved as .jpg files? (( when in windows explorer, go to the "views" menu and hit "details"; under "file type", it should say ".jpg". ))

the first thing you should do is attempt to open them using whatever program(s) came with your digital camera. most come with specific image-downloading software and viewing software. this will probably be your best bet.

you may want to try either inserting them in a microsoft word document (( on the top where the menus are: insert --> picture --> from file )) just to make sure they won't show up. or, you could right-click on the thumbnail of the picture, go to "open with" and try out some of the image programs on your computer. perhaps one can open it.

that's all i can really think of; please let me know how that works out for you. if it doesn't work, please write all the details you can (( i.e., what programs you tried, etc. ))

I have a Sony Mavica FD-90 camera. We have been having trouble with a format error message when we insert the floppy. I bypassed this message and tried to format the disk through the camera. It worked! I used the camera and the pictures recorded and played back on the camera. I assumed the problem was solved.....wrong. When I went to open them on my PC they will not open. I open the A: drive and the icons appear, it even tells me how large the file is and that they are in jpeg format but they will not open. I've tried opening them using other applications but with no success. When I try to look at the properties of each file I get an error msg and the program closes. When I put the disk back in the camera the pictures show up! Is there any way to recover these photos? Like I said, the only way to view the picture is through the camera.

Any help would be great!

Make sure the correct default is set up with the program that should open the the jpeg files.

If file does not open right click and then open with.

Hello I'm new here and here's my problem
Yesterday I took a bunch of photos with my Kodak Easy Share Z1275 (if that makes any difference). While yesterday I could see them all in the previem on my cam, today when I put the SD card in the laptop, I realized two of them do not open at all. When I try to open them with Windows Picture viewer it says there's no preview available, while when trying to open it with iPhoto Plus 4 a message appears that this is an unkown file format (although the extension of the file still is .jpg). Moreover when I put the SD card back in my cam I couldn't see the two pictures like I did the day before. I have Windows XP Service Pack 3. Does anyone have any idea how can I fix this?

Welcome to TSG,
Are you sure you have seen the pictures or just the preview on the camera and didn't click the button strong enough?
I would copy those jps's to my Photo folder anyway, do you have Irfanview or some other viewer?

OR the card is corrupted at that spot, or there was not enough battery power to right pic-info to memory.

I recently backed up all the files on my hard drive to an external drive then re-installed Vista and restored the back-up files. For the most part the files came back okay with the exception of many, many old image files. They are all jpegs. Some came back, some did not. The files that did not won't display at all - double clicking on them displays an error message in Windows Viewer to the effect that the file is not a valid image. Very strange. Several attempts to fix them using some freeware jpeg utilities have proved futile.

Any ideas out there?
