Mouse Cursor Disappears after unlock screen Windows 8.1

Q: Mouse Cursor Disappears after unlock screen Windows 8.1

Lately my pointer is disappearing after i login from sleep or locked computer.

I had this problem in the past but it got solved after i restored my PC, now it came back to haunt me.
I am guessing some updates disrupted with the mouse cursor (not an expert opinion).

I've tried many things but the issue seems to be persistent.

Here are some things I've tried with no results:

Changing the pointer options (hide while you type, pointer trails, ctrl to highlight) and combinations of them.

I tried using different pointers (Black, White, Black small, etc)

Also tried using troubleshooting the software changes, sfc /scannow, clean registry with ccleaner, rebooting (many times).

It seems to be a problem with no concrete solution.

The only solution that I found is (Clt-Alt-Del) it changes the screen and the pointer appears again, if I lock the computer it is gone once more.

If somebody can help i would appreciate it.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have had a U500v Asus touchscreen for a little over a month now. I haven't used it very much so I am still getting used to Windows 8, but have had no problems till today: I just woke my laptop from hibernation, and the mouse cursor was visible until I entered my password to login. It then disappears.

I have tried rebooting and fully powering off many times, and in both scenarios my mouse cursor is visible and useable to select the box to type in my password, and then it disappears after I hit or click enter to login. It's not just invisible, as I have tried clicking on things when I have positioned my cursor (while still visible) and then tried to select things when it disappears, so the cursor is just completely not there anymore.

I have tried updating drivers on the touchpad, but Windows tells me I have the best drivers already.

I have tried fn+f9 out of desperation, too, to no avail.

Can anyone suggest any other alternatives that might retrieve my mouse cursor?

Many thanks

A:Mouse cursor disappears on Asus laptop after logging in

I'm assuming that this is happening with the use of the touchpad, not with using a mouse.

Install the latest touchpad driver from Asus's web site. If Asus does not offer it then install the latest driver from the touchpad manufacturer's site. Then, if necessary, check the touchpad settings to see if there is some option doing that nasty deed.

As the title states, my mouse cursor disappears when I'm running something on fullscreen, but works as normal on windowed fullscreen and such. It started happening a while ago but I haven't booted something on fullscreen for some time, so I can't exactly pinpoint when (but it's around 1~2 months ago).

I've been trying to troubleshoot this issue for a while now, but nothing yet has worked for me. I've tried changing mouse control panel options (pointer trail that wasn't enabled at all in the first place; change mouse pointers, disable shadows, etc etc), screen DPI to all available and custom sizes and even tinker with application settings. None of it has worked thus far.

Does anyone else have any idea what might be the source of this issue?

Thank you so much in advance!

I have a Windows 7 mutli touch device and every time i touch the screen i get a stupid mouse graphic. Its really annoying because it has a tendency to get in the way when i am tapping around with my fingers on the screen. I have been unable to find anything

That is called the Touch Pointer, its easy to turn off once you know where to look.
Click Start, type pen in the search box or open control panel aand click Pen and touch.
Click the touch tab and uncheck Show the touch pointer... then just click ok to  close the dialog and the ghostly mouse picture will be gone.

I reinstalled Windows 7 from my Latitude E6540's factory reset, and after everything updated, now when I unlock, the screen shows normally and I start typing or clicking and the screen will just blink (like it's loaded up some special driver and refreshed the video output), sometimes a few times, and the cursor loses focus and I have to click into whatever I was just using.
I think this is something with Dell's custom software or drivers (maybe I installed them in the wrong order?) as the only time I run into these odd issues (that aren't on other Windows computers) that's usually the case.
How do I find out what's doing this, or at least fix it? It's really obnoxious.

Hi all, I haven't recently built a new pc and it was all working perfectly fine until today, I was on my desktop and noticed a small button next to my main power button on my case (Fractal design define r4). I pressed it and it reset my pc (turns out it was a reset button, lol), the issues is, when I booted my pc back up, everything seemed fine at first but then I noticed the purple 'welcome' login screen which is different from the usual blue logging in screen that you get. At the point where I should have been taken to my desktop, a black screen appears with nothing but my mouse cursor. I can move the cursor around but that's about it. I can still access my bios on boot and I can access my task manager using control, alt + delete. I managed to get my pc running on safe mode using the task manager to run my msconfig, however I do not know what to do from here as I'm completely clueless what resetting my pc actually did and am unable to make amends. I have uninstall ed my graphics card drivers but that was not of use either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am completely stuck and clueless as to what I should do next to resolve the issue. Thank you in advance.

Hi, Use the enclosed link and at that page, read the information about how to get this screen to come up on your computer....

Then, first try Using Last Known Good Configuration

You may first have to take the computer out of safe mode by undoing the msconfig work- I think you know how but here is some reference information on UN-doing the safe mode boot

Let us know if setting the Last Known Good works for you to boot normally.

Usually, a couple of restarts will get you going.... to Normal Mode

A few nights ago I came home to my Win 7 64 bit desktop frozen in a busy state. Windows was running, but the cursor was indicating busy and the computer was locked up. After 10 minutes of waiting for it to respond (hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del or Ctrl+Shift+Del had no response), I did a hard reboot (held down power button until the computer restarted). When the computer booted back up - I saw a "Resuming Windows" screen rather than "Starting Windows." Windows did load, and while everything appeared to run fine (Start menu would open and cursor was okay), no programs would open after clicking on them, and task manager would not appear. Fed up, I did another hard reboot. This time, Windows did not boot. The Windows 7 logo appears, gets very dim, and after a while a 0xed (Unmountable boot volume) BSOD appears and the computer restarts.

The fun really begins when trying to launch Windows Setup, any of the three safe modes, or last known good configuration. In the safe mode scenarios, safe mode never loads (gets hung up while loading drivers). For last known good configuration, I get the same BSOD. The really interesting part is Windows Setup. Windows setup loads (you see the loading bar), and then goes to a black screen. After a while (15-60 minutes), a cursor appears on the screen. You can move the cursor around - but that's it. Ctrl+Alt+Del has no effect. I've left the computer on for 24+ hours at this point - nothing else happens. I have a separate Windows... Read more

I am trying to install Windows 7 on my Toshiba Satelite L300D laptop from USB boot. The laptop is running Windows Vista which crashed. I changed the boot order, to boot from USB first, but after showing "Windows is loading files" and "Starting Windows" screen, when the Welcome screen should appear (that one which shows when you want to install Windows 7) only mouse cursor pointing to the middle of black screen is shown. I can only move the cursor, but nothing else works.

This same problem appears when I want to boot Windows Vista, that is installed there, when it should show "Welcome screen" to log in, only black screen, which I described above appears. I have read that this should be BSOD (black screen of death). I have tried many options, that I have read about, but nothing helped. I know that Windows Vista OS, which is installed there apparently crashed, but I have no idea, why I cannot run the setup of new Windows 7 on it?

Thx for help!

Hello guys, sorry if posted in the wrong section.
I have a problem in my dual boot machine.
I decided to remove Linux mint 17 from my dual boot with windows 8.
I used easeus partition manager to delete the partitions associated (root, home and swap).
Then I got unallocated space just before my windows partition. So I moved my windows partition to the extreme left possible. Then I merged this unallocated space with my second storage partition.
These steps required reboot (specifically the moving of windows partition). When I rebooted my PC I got an error that grub was not found. I realized that I had forgot to fix MBR and load windows boot loader. So I used windows 7 recovery disk (yes windows 7 as I don't have windows8 recovery or installation disk). I got a windows 7 style boot loader instead of windows 8's graphical one which has advanced recovery options built in. But I proceeded. Then eases did its job with the partitions. After a reboot now I am stuck at a black screen after entering my password with a movable mose cursor. I can only press Ctrl+alt+del. Selecting task manager from it does nothing.

Since I don't have windows 8 disks and windows 8 boot loader I am not able to refresh or reset my PC. Neither can I shift restart my PC to get advanced boot options.
One more thing to note, that while entering password, I noticed that the lock screen and account pictures have changed to defaults of a freshly installed windows.

Thnx for the patient hearing

In order to repair this, you will need a windows 8/8.1 installation disc, or a set of factory restore CDs from your computer manufacturer. You cannot use a windows 7 boot loader on a windows 8/8.1 only installation. They are simply not properly compatible.

Today, my computer won't boot properly. The bootup process successfully makes it past the BIOS POST, past the black Windows splash screen (with the blue progress bar), and past the blue Windows "Welcome" screen.

After the Welcome screen, my screen goes completely Black. However, the mouse cursor arrow remains visible. The only thing I can do is a Ctrl-Alt-Del to pull up the Task menu.

The same Black Screen problem also occurs when I boot into Safe Mode.

Fortunately, I am able to successfully boot into "Safe Mode with Command Prompt". From there, I can launch explorer.exe and run my anti-virus, which finds no viruses.

I loaded the Repair Console and ran MBRFIX. MBRFIX said that there appeared to be a problem with the MBR and I allowed it to re-write it. I rebooted; ran MBRFIX again, and it reported the same problem...hmm...

Within Safe Mode/Command Prompt, I can see all of my programs and data files..

Any thoughts on how I should proceed to diagnose and fix this Black Screen problem?

A:Windows XP Black Screen with active mouse cursor

If you can boot to safe mode with command prompt, then it seems to be some type of driver that is preventing you from loading windows correctly. If you didn't recently install a new device or update any drivers for installed hardware, then boot to safe mode and check the event viewer for any system errors. If you are not familiar with the viewer, you can find it in the control panel under administrative tools. It can be pretty good tool for troubleshooting errors.

You could try running sfc /scannow from the run command, once you boot to safe mode with command prompt and then load explorer. This will search the windows installation and prompt you for the cd to reinstall any missing or corrupt files.

Also, you could try the repair option with the windows install cd. You go thru the same steps as an install, but should be prompted with two options: to repair the current install or install a fresh copy.

Good luck, hope this helps solve your issue.

Hi all,

I wanted to know if anyone could help with the below.

I currently have a Windows 10 laptop that was working without issues for a while, however after a restart the laptop appears to load windows but never get to the login screen, only show a blank screen with only a mouse icon visible.

I have tried various Windows supplied options with the following outputs:

1. Boot into safe mode (with and without network) - this again only loads to a blank screen with only mouse icon visible
2. Window reset - appears to get stuck on 8% - only to show an error saying reset could not happen, reverting changes (option to reset with files saved was chosen - as current files are required)
3. Start Up Repair - issue not resolved
4. System Restore and System Image Recovery - N/A as Windows cannot find previous image or restore point
5. Booted in Low-Resolution video - again, same issue is experienced.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

just been given a pc that has the above happening.

Done a google on the subject and it seems to point to either the mobo or the HDD or the last installed driver.

But I can do a system restore to the 28th of october and it works fine for a couple of reboots then it does the same thing.

I ran the inbuilt check system the pc has and it didnt find any issues with hardware.

I have avast running, malwarebytes running and have run rkill.exe all with nothing found.

The PC is only 2 years old.

There has been no new installs of any software or drivers, and the owner says it was closed down 2 nights ago and took 15 minutes or so to shut down.

and since then it has started up once ok then locked up and started displaying the fault.

Im quite happy to back up the customers files and do a full reinstall as a last resort, but if it then happens again I need to be able to tell him what if anything is faulty.

just found a thread that says avast can cause the issue, this would make sense as it auto updates after the system restore.

im going to disable avast for now and see if it clears the issue.

So I ran safemode and disable avast as a service, and the pc booted up fine.

BUT...when it loads the desktop and the starts to load the various things in the system tray the desktop flickers and then it starts again building the system tray icons.

reenabling the avast service causes the issue to return so this is most definate the culprit.

Hi everyone, I know it's not a blue screen, and I'm sorry if it's not in the good section. But I really need some help and ideas ^^ I posted this topic on AMD forum

My computer (HD 6870 ; I5 2500k ; windows 7) is having some annoying trouble: when I boot, I get a blackscreen (but with some light switching (backlight I guess ?)) after the windows logo. I have my mouse cursor and I can BLIND type my password, then I hear the sound of windows starting. But I still have a blackscreen.

I don't know if their was any driver update, I was on holidays, my friend using my computer and he didn't notice any changes, he doesn't know if their was any auto update (he didn't do any manual update).

Anyway, I uninstalled AMD driver, got my graphic card in vga mode and it boots fine.

I did many "clean" uninstalls for AMD driver (by software menu in windows, with the clean uninstall amd software, with DDU,both in safe and normal mode)

Nothing changes, still get a black screen with mouse cursor.

I tried installing other driver version, i got a whql one for 2014 (13.2 I think), same problem. I tried with many drivers, same problem all the time.

I tried installign drivers manually (by device manager) and with amd setup. I tried custom installs and full installs.

My windows was up to date.

I tried sfc /scannow, no errors.
In the end, I tried a clean WINDOWS install. So I formated my ssd and re installed windows and ..... Still the black screen when I install the newest AM... Read more

This one truly has me confused. I started one of my computers and it started as normal I saw the Windows logo with the bar scrolling beneath it and the next thing I know I have a black screen with the cursor on it. I am able to move the cursor but can see nothing else. I have tried putting in a new video card in and am still getting the same problem. I have tried rebooting the computer in safe mode but it also does not give me a screen now safe mode does display drivers before showing blank screen with cursor. Any Suggestions on how to correct this?

Help, I have a toshiba laptop with windows 8.1. It's also a touch screen. Ever since it updated the cursor seems to disappear and I reboot. It's there for the logon screen and the next screen, but then it disappears. I know this is a windows 81 problem because I read up on it, but nothing seems to make the cursor reappear

my mouse cursor- an optical usb - is stuck in the middle of the screen. The mouse works, as I can still scroll on a webpage with it, and click on icons, but the cursor won't budge. I've also tried a PS-2 mouse, same issue, and have tested every USB port and all work fine so it is NOT a hardware issue that I can see. I've tried rebooting and doing a system restore, and I have the same issue in safe mode. When I go to device manager, it rcognizes the device and says everything is working properly. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver, nothing. Everything else seems to be fine on my PC. Any help will be most appreciated, thank you!

Is this a laptop or a desktop? What is the make and model# of your computer/motherboard?
Boot into Setup (Bios) go to Integrated Peripherals look for Legacy USB or USB mouse, if it is disabled, using the arrow key, Enable it. Save and Exit.
Go to the computer manufacturers support/download drivers site. type in your make and model # and download the Chipset driver (for USB Support)
Also, go to Start/Search and type CMD Right click the CMD results and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Command Prompt type SFC /scannow and press enter. This will replace any missing or corrupted system files.

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7. Since the upgrade I have noticed the following:

When my computer comes alive from screen saver mode, sometimes though not always all the icons are missing. The task bar is there but clicking on any item there does nothing. It's like everything just seizes up.

Any solutions please. It is frustrating.

Sounds like you have a virtual desktop that got added somehow. Click on the taskbar icon that looks like the square with two ears (next to Cortana in my screen shot. See if you have more than one desktops and close the extra one.

Hello, I have a Dell laptop 15R 2nd Gen i-5 processor running Windows 7 Home 64bit.

The problem I am having is this: Mouse disappears on right side of screen. The entire right side of screen (not just in the lower corner). If I move the mouse 6 inches to the right off screen, then I would have to move it 6 inches to the left again until it re-appears. If I moved the pointer 1 foot to the right, I would have to move it 1 foot to the left until the pointer re-appeared again.

It's as if the pointer kept going on to a hidden screen??

A:Mouse Pointer disappears RIGHT side of screen

Looks like a mismatch between physical resolution and the larger virtual desktop resolution. Should that be the case, a few users prefer the larger space to work with and can navigate and bring into view the unseen parts as needed.

Hi all:I hope that this is the right board for this problem, even though it may not be primarily a "Touch" issue.  My problem is that I keep losing my pointer/cursor on my HP laptop. Here are my specs and details of the problem based on a set of questions that I found on another thread: What make / model computer? HP Pavilion 15-n216us What operating system? Windows 10 64bit upgraded from Win 8. Does the mouse left alone disappear or are you clicking on something and then it just disappears? It only (and always) happens when I touch the screen. The cursor disappears instantaneously when I touch the screen. It happens whether I have a USB mouse plugged in or not. How do you normally resolve the issue? Except for restarting the laptop, the only way that I can get the cursor back is to go to Personalize/Themes/Mouse Pointer settings. I then have to close the Mouse Pointer settings windows (clicking OK) while shaking the mouse. How is your mouse connected to your computer? Wireless but as stated above, it also happens when the mouse is not plugged in. One screen or two screens? If one, have you ever used two? One screen, never two. More information:1) The cursor is not set to disappear when typing.2) I read that this could be a problem with the Touchpad, so I downloaded the Synaptics Pointing Device driver for my laptop from the HP website. When I attempted to install it, I got a message that I already have a newer driver than the... Read more

I have a problem with the screen of my Satellite U840T

Mouse disappears right of the screen and bottom in black bars at the top and while the left mouse can not go to the bars.

In the display settings everything is good I think.

Thank you for yours help

A:Satellite U840T - Mouse disappears right of the screen and bottom

I?m confused.
Your issue isn?t described very well.

What do you mean exactly by: ?Mouse disappears right of the screen and bottom in black bars at the top??
Do you mean the touchpad or cursor?
The notebook?s touchpad supports the Gesture control feature (Multi Touch) and this feature could be configured in touchpad settings:
+Control panel -> mouse -> Device settings tab -> Settings+

There you can find also the option called ?Edge swipes? which opens the Charms bar, app Switcher, and Application bar just by moving finger from the edge of the touchpad in towards the center.

In such case the cursor would not be visible.

My wife's Dell laptop, running Windows 7, freezes up for several minutes from time to time.  The USB ports won't read flash drives unless the computer is restarted (which only lasts for a few minutes), and the mouse cursor disappears from time to time for a few minutes.  Also unable to run Windows updates.  I need help determining if these issues are caused by a virus, or if there could be some other reason.

Hi, I have an office desktop pc (HP COMPAQ ELITE 8100) running 64-bit Windows 7. I was manually running Windows update and manually updating some of my drivers when the pc suddenly turned itself off.

I turned it back on and now it doesn't get to the login screen anymore. It just displays a black screen with a movable mouse cursor although I can't really click anything or even press any keys on the keyboard.

I tried loading into the recovery environment but it only gives me the option to restore my hard drive to factory settings, which I don't want since I have lots of important files in it.

I've searched around the forums but I can't find a problem that is EXACTLY like mine.

By the way, my pc is on a dual boot mode with an Ubuntu 11.10 and that is how I'm able to access this forum right now. The dual boot was set-up by the employee that I replaced so I have no idea how this is set-up.
Any help would be appreciated!

A:Black screen with movable mouse cursor before login screen appears

Firstly, boot into the Linux operating system, and then create a backup of all important files and data.

The issue started a few hours ago when I was playing League of Legends, specifically when the game has finished its loading and crashed to Desktop which is a common problem on my laptop. As usual I would restart the game, but before I could do that explorer.exe crashed, my entire Desktop has turned to the familiar transparent whitish filter before the "Explorer.exe has crashed" message popped out, which was peculiar at the time because this is the first time it had happened.

So I allowed the program to restart, it didn't. So I shut down via holding down the power button and rebooted the laptop. It went into Startup Repair, and did its automated repair, so I let it repair while I did my stuff. When I returned, the repair had completed and it booted the laptop into the infamous Black Screen of Death with a movable mouse cursor. This is right before I could log on to my user account, and I decided to search for solutions initially on Google using an available PC.

Most of it didn't work, for starters, booting up to Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking and Last known Good Configuration brought me to the same movable mouse cursor with black screen combo. Safe Mode with Command Prompt has the same problem, and the Command Prompt does not appear.

After which, I accessed the Repair menu with the F8 button right after the BIOS loads and tried every option. First, Repair Your Computer did not work as it couldn't find any problems after the first initial repair it did. Syste... Read more

Alright, everytime i move my mouse cursor to the right side of the screen it goes off it and i have to move it back and sometimes i loose it. This also happens with any kind of window i have up. I can move it off the screen, but it only does it on the right side of the screen. Can anyone help?

A:Mouse cursor goes off screen

Do you have your screen adjusted right? It's possible to set a monitor so the image is too big to fit on the screen, and if so, this would let the mouse "dissapear" off the edge(s). Also, do you have a second monitor connected, if your computer detects two displays it could set the image to "horizontal span," which would make one image from two monitors, letting the mouse move between them.

Hi, i ve noticed something weird with my mouse cursor, its happened on both my old CRT monitor and my new LCD monitor.

on the left side of the screen, my mouse cursor can go completely off the viewable screen, and if pushed all the way to the right, part of the cursor can be seen on the left edge of the viewable screen.

could this be a video driver problem?

I have an NVIDIA geforce4 integrated GPU, and im also trying to find a 2004 driver update for that, please help me if anybody can!

A:mouse cursor able to move of the screen, why?

Your problem seems to be that you have activated the multiple monitor feature, but there's no second monitor connected. To try this, open a program (the calculator wil be fine) and then try to move the window off the screen completely. If you can do this, then you have the multiple monitor feature on.

To disable this, rigth click a free space in the desktop, and click on properties. Go to the Configuration tab, and you'll see two monitors. Select the left one, right click it and disable it. Press Ok, and all the problems gone.

You can find all the nVidia drivers in www.nvidia.com

Someone told me that I could have picked up some malware. How can I get rid of it?

Does anyone have any idea why the pointer to my mouse falls off the screen.
I was online and sent an e-mail and then the mouse cursor fell off the left side of the screen and will not come back.
I've connected three different mouses/mice. One to the standard mouse port, didn't work.
One to the usb port, cordless, doesn't work.
One to the usb port, trackball, doesn't work. You can fling the trackball and make the cursor fly up onto the screen and it falls nearly as fast down to the bottom left and disappears.
I've run spybot search and destroy and removed all problems found.
My Norton Antivirus is expired but I can't download the new one because I can't navigate their site.
I've tried to install a disc copy and the installation stops and says that a newer version is installed and needs to be removed before I can install the 2007 version and try to run a Norton virus scan.
I've re-installed the Logitech mouse software. Nothing has worked.
Has anyone heard of this and know how to fix it?
