Can't install software on Vista, Part II

Q: Can't install software on Vista, Part II

Okay, this is the second time I've posted this, but it seems that the first message has disappeared.

I have Vista Home Premium on a Dell Inspiron E1705 (if that helps)...I CAN'T download or access any vital features because when Windows goes to ask my permission to continue, no window comes up! The screen darkens, but there is nothing there, and I have to go into task manager to regain access. I can't even do a system restore, or run things as an administrator (as suggested in previous postings) because they all seek permission for me to continue and I end up right back at the same dilemma...

Any ideas? I'm just stumped.

Preferred Solution: Can't install software on Vista, Part II

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This is a strange one,

I have a new fresh install of Vista since I reformatted at the weekend after having other PC problems with Vista. All was going OK until today when I tried to install some software to finalize getting all my usual software installed (I nearly got everything installed back to how it was) anyway, nothing will install, any install I run, the install starts...then just hangs - I have been watching the processor working on the desktop gadget and one of the two cores is working really hard and going into the red but nothing is actually happening with the install - I am able to quit the install attempts via task manger - I have tried rebooting many times and its the same - I have tried turning off my Norton 360 but the same problem is present! (BTW, I have tried to install various things to test if it was just one application and I got the same result)

I would be grateful for any help?

Hi, New to the forum, but not necessaily a newbie.
I installed ActivClient 6.1 (CAC reader sw), on a Dell Inspiron XPS Gen2 laptop running Vista Ultimate SP1. When performing the suggested restart to complete the install, I received this error ""Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause....blah, blah, blah...File: \windows\system32\Drivers\pxHelp20.sys Status: 0xc0000098 Info: Windows failed to load because a critical system driver is missing, or corrupt."
I tried the Vista Repair option multiple times and though it indicated success, I still could not start windows. I then attempted to perform a restore from three separate restore points, each time it stated to reboot as if all was well, but returned the same errors with alternating bad files PxHelp20 or winload. I went to the Vista repair utility command prompt and attempted to run sfc /scannow, but was given "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service."
I would love to fix this without a wipe and load...any ideas?

I am running vista home premium on a dell inspiron 530 that is less than a year old and every time I plug a usb device in it will not install anything. I click on "locate and install driver software" and it will try to find it, but for my data traveler flash drive it says "Windows has found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it, Microsoft WPD Filesystem volume driver, Access is denied." When I try to plug my digital camera into a usb port it also says "access denied." I have tried quite a few fixes and nothing works, I have talked to dell about it and got nothing. Can anybody help?

Trying to run installation files (setup.exe for example) and I can't get anything to install on Vista.

Got this new laptop yesterday and managed to install a fair amount of stuff before encountering problems. Sometimes I click to run the installation file and nothing happens for at least ten minutes until it suddenly starts installing. Other times nothing happens at all.

I've disabled the annoying user account control and I'm logged in as the administrator. I can't figure out what the problem is. Any ideas?

A:[SOLVED] Can't Install Software on Vista

The problem is (or may be) that some programs that are not specifically designed for Vista dont ask for administrator access when performing certain tasks. Vista doesn't like that. Try right clicking the programs and selecting "run as administrator". Then it should install ok. I had the same problem and it worked for me in all but one case (Area 51 will not install on Vista).

Here is some good advice when installing programs in Vista, # 4 is good advice even if the program was designed for Vista.

Here is how to install software or drivers on Vista that are for XP,2000,NT4,98,95

1. Right click on the setup.exe file for the software/driver you are trying to install and select properties, then the compatibility Tab

2. Tick the "run this file in compatibility mode" box and then select XP, or whatever OS the software was designed for, in the drop down box, Tick "run as Administrator" if it is available, hit OK

3. Now double click this setup.exe file to execute the install process, hopefully all will go well and install the drivers/Software you need.

4. If the exe installs software for the device, or you have installed software only, you need to navigate to the program folder where it installed, then do the compatibility thing (1 & 2) again for the program executable(s). If the program was designed for Vista skip compatibility mode, just tick "run as administrator"

I do not guarantee all drivers or software to work in Vista, but a large percentage do..

Good luck.

If the Software/ installer (exe file) is on CD, copy the entire contents of the CD to a folder in Vista, then start at #1

There is no compatibility mode for .msi installers
16 bit programs will not run on Vista

If Drivers are in INF form, go to Device manager, find the hardware you want to install a driver for and right click select "Update Driv... Read more

So I have a new computer that I just installed a new security software, CA internet security suite 2009. I had uninstalled the Norton Security that had come with it because i didn't really like it and the the CA ISS was on sale. Anyway to my problem...

Now I'm getting errors form Windows Vista that says Host Process has stop working, windows is looking for a solution.
CA has no help solution for this problem on their support website. I can't really see if this is effecting how my computer runs but I get the error all the time. I was just seeing if there was a something I could do to fix the problem.

Thanks Jen

running Vista Bus 32 SP1 on Fujitsu T4220

Every time I try to install a program-any program (Steam, PowerISO, OneNote, ect....) I receive the same error message:

"Could not write value [insert program name] to key \Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run. Verify you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel."

I've tried installing a handful of programs and it is always the same. I had this problem before I forced the SP1 installation. I was hoping SP1 would fix everything. I can't remember what I did that might have provoked this problem. Maybe something I accidentally deleted with CCleaner?

I'm posting here as a last resort. Seriously considering just doing a fresh install of Vista.

Thanks in advance,

A:Can't Install Software On Vista - Same Error Mesage Every Time

Most likely this is due to a program (such as CCleaner, SpyBot, or some other) that's restricting the ability of programs to add themselves to the Run at startup list (which is the key that you mentioned).

Hello all,

This is my first time joining a tech support forum because this issue has become THAT much of a nuisance to me. I had to uninstall World of Warcraft when the new game patch came out and when I tried to reinstall it, it was always unable to do so. I ran it on different profiles, ran as administrator, ran in safe mode, still nothing. So WoW tech support told me to run a memory scan and a registry cleaner. Memory checked out okay, registry cleaner found a few problems... but after I ran registry cleaner now whenever I log on to my profile(just mine), two windows pop up at the beginning multiple times. One says registry console tool isn't working(something like that)" and the other says " reg.exe has failed to initialize properly.
The hard part about is everything on the computer seems to be working fine... applications.. internet... everything... so I thought it was just the WoW disc. But then I tried to install discs for a japanese language program and it couldn't install either! And while it was opening the disc;s setup I got those two error messages again. Toshiba tech support says I will need to get the boot disc that came with the computer and restore factory settings because the file is corrupted, but I'm looking for any other way to do it that doesn't involve me paying for the disc, shipping and handling, tech support, blah blah blah... anyone got any ideas?

This is a clients laptop, only one month old with factory installed win 7 pro. Only updates, office 2013, outlook 2010, Avast AV and some company bespoke non-invasive software installed.

Been getting these BSODs for the whole time since active usage.

I've tried lots of google threads without success, I think it's a driver issue??

I'm really stuck here, although I'm an 'IT Guy' with 15 years in the business I've never looked into diagnosing dump files etc.

I appeal for your help, please find attached the collected sys info/dumps.

A:Win 7 x64 BSOD - I know it's software but which part?

Lets take a look.

An attempt was made to access a pageable (or completely invalid) address at an
interrupt request level (IRQL) that is too high. This is usually
caused by drivers using improper addresses.
If kernel debugger is available get stack backtrace.
Arg1: 0000000006f77320, memory referenced
Arg2: 0000000000000002, IRQL
Arg3: 0000000000000000, value 0 = read operation, 1 = write operation
Arg4: fffff880058d9b3d, address which referenced memory
So we tried to read invalid/pageable memory at an IRQL of two which is an illegal operation that will always result in a bugcheck.
Whether the memory was pageable or invalid is still unknown as the dump file hasn't saved that information.

I am posting this for a friend of mine, (hereafter referred to as "Bob").

As stated in the thread title, Bob deleted the following folder:

Bob told me that the above folder was located at the root level of the C drive, (C:\).

The above folder was approximately 19 G in size. Bob deleted said folder to free up some space on his hard drive. Thereafter he had the below problems, all of which happen consistently.

Every time Bob tries to install any new software, (application software, games, etc.), he gets the following error dialog:
Error 1606. Could not access network location %PUBLIC%\Desktop\.
When creating a new folder, Bob can not give it a name. Every time Bob tries to name a new folder, Vista keeps forcing the name of the newly created folder to be "New Folder".

Can not install any new software. The "Error 1606" dialog happens each time.

Can not uninstall most existing software, "Error 1606" dialog happens each time.

Win Explorer gets flaky sometimes. Warm boot clears this condition.

The Print Screen key, (a.k.a. screen dump key), does not work.

Exceptions To The Above:
All software that was installed prior to Bob deleting said folder works OK.

Windows Update works OK. No error messages, etc..

It should be pointed out that the only account on Bob's laptop is the top administrator account. That is why Bob was able to screw up his laptop so bad. Had he created an account for dail... Read more

I have my uncles laptop with me, an Acer Aspire S570Z, which comes with recovery DVDs. I recently removed all partitions on the hard drive and did a full system restore using these two discs.

After that I attempt to boot Vista normally and it seems to lock up completely during the boot splash screen with those animated squares. It does this every time. No discs are in the DVD drive, no external peripherals are plugged in.

Now, Vista DOES boot okay in Safe Mode, but that's about as good as it gets.

Also, before removing all the partitions there was a secondary installation of Ubuntu Linux alongside Windows which seemed to work flawlessly so I'm not sure why Vista is locking up, even after restoring the OS to it's factory defaults.

Any ideas?

Edit to add: Okay, Safe mode doesn't actually boot correctly. Once it begins to present the GUI, a pop-up explains that "The installation cannot finish in safe mode".

I've also found a separate Vista "upgrade" DVD which I've booted from and am doing a Custom install with, over-writing the OS on the hard drive right now. Maybe this will work...

Hello Everyone,

If you are not familiar with my previous post, please see 'Problems while installing software (XP)' I really don't want to waste space by repeating all of that.

I'm grasping at straws right now, I have not been able to find anything even remotely like this, and there are no response to me earlier post, the one mentioned above.

Is it possible that there is an install that is still trying to work, in the background? I have kill the process on some of the installations that appear to hang. Could the installer be hung in the middle of some other installation?

If so, any ideas how I would kill it?

I think (the jury is still out on this) I may have fixed the problem.

I was having a problem where I could not get the properties of a folder, not the file(s) but folder, would not display. Searching the web I found a solution (if you are interested in the solution look in this forum, for one of my posts, it was a problem with file folder properties. In a nutshell I had to get a service World Wide Web Publishing to start. Since fixing this, every one of my installs have completed as one would thin they should.

I had a desktop with WinXP that my Lexmark X1270 all-in-one printer was hooked up to. I have since got rid of that pc and got a laptop with Vista (I know nobody likes it, but it appeared that that's the only choice now.) that I hooked my printer up to. While it does print, a part of it is missing. It just so happens to be a crucial part to me. The All-In-One center isn't on my pc (I've tried reinstalling a couple times and updating driver/software at Lexmark's site), that being the part where you can copy and scan things. Anyone able to help?

A:Part of printer's software missing?

I like Vista for a start - I haven't had to do a fresh install once yet!

This may sound a cop out but have you asked Lexmark if this is a common issue? - you never know they may even help.

Another shot is, are you installing it as an administrator? i.e right-click on the setup.exe and Run as Administrator.

My lexmark wifi printer wasnt working so I uninstalled the software thinking re-installing would solve the problem. Now, whenever I try to re-install the Lexmark software, as soon as it installs the uninstall option (part way through loading the application and I know this as it updates as installing) it starts to uninstall itself. I have tried countless driver sites but they all have the same issue. Is this a Windows 7 issue?

A:Fresh Install of Win Pro 64 Missing part of HD

If you're wondering why your 320GB drive only shows 297-8GB, then that's normal. See this thread for an explanation why.

HDD's - the Advertized size vs the Actual size.

On top of that, system restore points and shadow copies can take a lot of space up from all the points made over time. You can delete all points except the last one from time to time, if you were so inclined to. But remember, if you delete them, you won't have them later on to fall back on.

About your ati drivers, I don't ever install my graphic card drivers from WU, from past screw ups with them, I always get the CCC, or just the drivers from the official site, AMD, and just hide the graphic card updates from WU.

Want to know the best programs both free and not free, to get rid of spyware and does any work better with VISTA or does it matter? Have used free versions of adaware, spybot, cwshredder and Microsoft's (don't remember name) not defender-have that running and still have a problem.
Posted a highjack this log for help in the spyware forum but my post got lost in the shuffle. The post there come in droves. But have decided that even if I have to pay to get it removed I will and I need to get on with it as I have been dealing with this for about a week. Have had vista home premium for about 2 weeks- just want to know which is the best or good and easy to use. I read somewhere that Aware Away works well and am probably going to try it, any suggestions? Also I have used easy cleaner as a registry cleaner in the past (old pc)and not had any problems removing the registry's that came up but I am a little concerned using Vista since not that many people are that familiar with it.

The short back story. I have a server which I just put 4 1.5TB HDD's in a RAID 5 array. When installing windows (Windows Vista Ultimate, 64bit), I created a 50gig partition for windows. Upon doing so, it automatically created 2 other partitions of ~2TB (instead of one partition of 4TB). I figured once I got into windows, I could merge them or something.

Now, in windows, I was able to format the first 2TB space into a new drive letter E:, but was unable to extend it to use the extra space: http://i.imgur.com/OgDIz.jpg (seems it might be a limitation of the MBR).

So, I was willing to just make 2 partitions and use it like that, but: http://i.imgur.com/F3Wqd.jpg it won't let me format or use it. How can I get the unallocated space into a usable format?

A:Unable to use part of HDD in Vista

There are several "2 tB limits" in Windows: http://blogs.technet.com/askcore/arc...s-storage.aspx

Okay then I can't really find the first topic I did so I'm starting another. I finally upgraded my ran to around 900 kb and the games are starting to work a bit better. I was looking for in the other topic whats was one of the sites that will scan your computer and tell you of stuff that you can downlaod to help it.

A:Getting Sick And Tried Of Vista Part 2

Are you asking for a site that tells you what hardware you need to buy to make your system run quicker? If so, I don't know a site but if you tell me your CPU, RAM, and what you want to use your PC for; I can probably tell you what's slowing you down.

Hi folks,

A few weeks ago I asked whether now that I have upgraded to Windows 10 whether I could perform a clean install after the July 29 deadline and was answered in the affirmative.

Foolishly though, I forgot to ask, how? Can I clean install via Windows Store or can it be done through the bootable USB flash drive, and should I download the bootable ISO back onto my USB drive for safekeeping?

A:Windows 10 clean install question (part 2)

Now that you have upgraded...
You can download Newest ISO and clean Install at any time..

I am running Vista SP1 32 bit version on my computer now. I have a Windows 7 X86 version I am trying to install. When I go to install it gets to the Compatibility part of the install, put up a blank box with the message that the info has been saved to my desktop. The only button to click is close. If i do that 7 starts over. The info saved on my desktop it blank also. Nothing. I also can't run the windows 7 Compatibility advisor from Microsoft when you download it. Any ideas??

A:Problems getting past Compatibility part of the install

Are you making a clean install or an update one? Updates are usually a problem. Try making a clean install...
About the advisor - are you running this from and admin user? Have you tried running it with admin rights? Does the advisor install correctly? I have tried the advisor on several rigs and it seems to work just fine...

I'm trying to instal Windows 7 Pro - 64 bit in a brand new system, when I try to choos the partition for instalatiuon I get the following error:

"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. The EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks"

How can I get around that?

My specs:
CPU: Intel Core i7-2600 3.40GHz
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H61MA-D3V GEN3
Memory: 8GB Corsair DDR3
Hard Drives: 1TB Seagate Barracuda 3.5" SATA III

A:Can't do a fresh install of Windows 7 - 64 Bit (MBR Part Table)

It sounds like you are trying to install under EFI. If that's the case, then this is the correct message - EFI installations of Windows 7 require GPT. Is this what you are trying to do?

Hi. I am having problems with vista not recognizing my Plextor IDE pata cd drives. I've already searched all over the place and tried a few things but no dice so far.

Here is everything I know:
- new computer, running vista premium (I put the computer together myself). About 3 weeks old.
- problem started just this past week (unfortunately I can't remember exactly what day or after what may have happened, but I suspect it has something to do with a bunch of windows updates that came one day).
- before that, the drives were working fine.
- my sata hard drives and dvd drive work fine.
- the drives are indeed detected by the bios
- i have verified the drives by booting with a bootable memtest86 cd and running memtest
- i think the pata drives aren't supported by the ICH9 chipset, but this motherboard has some sort of JMicron controller thingy, and it definitely detects the 2 drives because when the computer is running thru the POST messages, it says they are detected and even gives a few seconds to press any key...
- jumpers are set to master and slave right now. This worked before so I don't see any problems with that setting.
- this is the 32 bit version of vista
- right now this is the only issue I'm having.
- so to summarize, the drives don't appear in Device Manager or in My Computer. Scan for hardware changes has no effect. Manually adding new hardware doesn't work either.
Here's what I've tried:
- the registry fix found her... Read more

I'm trying to install Joomla (= revised Mambo) onto my WAMP-server environment, which includes the Apache web server.

The instructions say:
Unzip the distribution file into a directory under your web server root. If you are using the Apache web server, this is typically c:apache groupapachehtdocs on Windows.

Allowing for a typo, I have no such directory group or groupapache nor groupapachehtdocs.

Anybody have any insight?

A:How to install Joomla on an Apache server (part of WAMP)?

The webs server root is the directory where you put index.html and all the subfolders etc. By default it should be "htdocs" under Apache in Program Files.

Hi chaps and chapesses!

Very quick question......

I have been asked to provide the "part number" for a copy of Windows Vista I have. I was told I would find it on the label attached to the box.

The only problem is non of the numbers on the label tell you what they are! Does anyone know of a website (or know themselves) that has a break down of the info provided or know the format in which the part number should look like?

Mucho thanks in advance.

A:Solved: Vista Part Number (on the label???)

Hello Again

As the subject suggests, I have had to re install Windows 7 Enterprise and it seems to have lost part of the partitioned drive. As per the picture the PS3 drice and Panthro drives are part of an internal hard drive, when I click on it I get the error message?

Would be very grateful if someone would spare the time to help me.

A:Fresh Install Win 7 Enterprise- 1 part of partition access denied

Are you using Enterprise for a particular reason? You could try scf /scannow and see if it will repair corrupted files.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Soo its an Acer travelmate 4000 laptop, 1.6Ghz, 2gig ram, clean hard drive with two partitions , primary is 30 gig , secondary 120 gig.

Windows 7 home prem OEM 32 bit

It gets through the first part of the install (up to the first restart) then goes on to the screen shown in part 9 of the clean install guide, highlighting the "completing installation" message

Clean Install Windows 7

then stops with the progress bar about 3/2rds of the way. The drive light flashes occasionally, but otherwise nothing,

I formatted and partitioned the drive in another machine.

A:Laptop Install stalls part way. W7 home prem 32bit

Boot the installer and use Custom install Drive Options to delete all partitions, create new as you desire, format and install.

If this fails, try wiping the HD: SSD - HDD Optimize for Windows Reinstallation. Unplug all other HD's and peripherals.

If the installation fails at same place, try entering Device manager during install to uninstall any Device which is in error and likely stalling installation, then update driver from desktop after install finishes: Device Manager - Access During Windows 7 Installation

Next try resetting the CMOS: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS to Optimal Defaults.
While in BIOS setup, set SATA controller to AHCI to try install.

okay, I don't know if this is related to upgrade problems I've been reading about. I think I update a while back (and no, I don't remember when, it was an auto update). Tried to start laptop, got "updating part 3 of 3".
Then it shut down and rebooted. Tried to get into safe mode to get into
vista. Same messages. Next tried to use recovery disks. New message
says they are not recognized. This is HP DV 2200 about year or so old.
I do have a linux partition, but it does not have wireless capabilities. Does have internet ability. Any hints? thanks, don.

I can't even use the vista DVD as the setup gets this same error....

Thanks for any idea's...

A:I've deleted an important part of Vista Operating System..

I have no idea if this will work, but try putting in your cd, then going to start and typing CMD. Run cmd a black window should open. Once the black window opens type sfc /scannow this stands for System File checker and when you scan it verifys that core parts of the operating system are ok, if not it tries to repair them. Let us know if that works.
