Preferred Solution: Default background image appears during startup, after selected image appears

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My friends is away from home. He have asked me to fix his computer problems. The problem is: nothing appears but the background image.

However, I can use the mouse and keyboard. I don't know the reason of this phenomenon.

I wonder whether I have the same problem with this man:

I attached the HijackThis scan result.

Hello everyone. Hope everyone is having a good day. I recently ran into some issues with my user account and had to create a new one as the old one was not accessible anymore. After creating a new user account - I've ran into an issue. When I go to switch my user account, I am taken to the login screen - however it just presents a background image. The only thing present is the power options on the right hand side. No accounts appear for me to switch to. My only option is to restart and go from there. Any help would be greatly appreciated . Thank you all for taking the time out to look at this post.

Yesterday my PC was working perfect. Zero problems. I shut it off for the night, then turn it on this morning. The BIOS image appears, and then it goes to a black screen. I can't do *anything*. I've tried putting in the Windows disc to try repairing, but it won't let me boot to the disc. There's never any option to. I've tried spamming F8 for safe mode and Delete/F2 to enter the BIOS, but nothing changes. It goes straight to the black screen.
Any help in resolving this issue would be much appreciated.

Hello everyone,

First, the machines:

1. The oldest, a Getac B300; Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, running fine.
2. My main machine, a Dell Latitude E6420; Windows 7 Professional 32-bit, running fine.
3. My most recent purchase, a Toshiba Tecra R940 I bought less than a month ago.

I regularly create system images for my machines on a Toshiba external USB drive that I use only for that purpose. The drive currently contains system images for all three machines: a 64-bit image for the B300; 32-bit, 64-bit and 32-bit/64-bit dual-boot images for the Dell, and a 64-bit image for the Tecra.

Now on to the Tecra. It came with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit preinstalled and activated, along with a Windows 8 system image on two DVDs in the box, also activated.

So, after I updated the preinstalled 7 and installed all my software, I created a system image using Windows Backup and Restore like I normally do, and decided to give Windows 8/8.1 a try. After much consternation and aggravation, I realized - again - that Windows 8 just wasn't for me, so I just decided to go back to Windows 7 and be done with it.

Except, now I can't. First, it was impossible for me to restore the machine to the system image I had created before. I installed Linux and tried to restore Windows 7 again, and that didn't work either. Finally, I reinstalled Windows 7 using the genuine DVD I had purchased for the B300 more than three years ago. I proceeded to install all the Windows updates (including Service Pack 1 ... Read more

A:Restore: only one system image appears in list!

May I suggest, forget system image. Download the free Macrium Reflect, and make images of the entire hard drive and put it on an external, that is what I and many other members do. In our opinions Macrium works better than, is faster and easier to use. Give it a try, you will not be disappointed. BTW, you can store as many images as you desire.

This just happened a few hours ago. My desktop background is displaying the default XP grey colour. However, I have my background set to an image.

The image is there. When I load it up, it flashes on the desktop, but then the colour returns - almost as if the picture is hiding underneath the solid colour.

I have tried restarting my computer. Doesn't work.

And yes, the image is still on my computer. I've tried many other pictures as test, even the windows default ones, and the same thing happens - just get solid colour.

Any ideas?

A:Desktop appears as solid colour; should be image.

Not sure if this will be the cause, but try right clicking on desktop, select properties.
Click on the desktop tab then customise desktop.
Click on the 'general' tab andwhere it has 'My Current Home Page' with a tick box next to it, click it - so that if it's ticked you untick it and if it isn't ticked you tick it.

A long shot but worth a try..

First I want to point out that the "Play a slide show on the lock screen" is not the option that I'm looking for, since it remembers the original image that was set for the lock screen after I log back in, or restart the computer.

I am looking for an option that will always load a random picture from a certain folder to appear as my lock screen, every time the lock screen appears.
So for example, I turn on the computer and I see Image #1. I log into my account and after a few minutes I lock the computer. When I lock the computer, I want to see Image #7 as the lock screen. Now I restart the computer. Windows shuts down and starts up again. I am now at the lock screen again. I want to see Image #4. (The reason why those image numbers are like that is because they're random).

So does anyone know of an option in Windows that can do that, or a 3rd party program that can do that?

Thanks so much

It costs $1.99 but it sounds like exactly what you asked for:

I have been having an error pop up for the last two weeks or so each time I log in to Windows. The title is '[filename] - Bad Image' (the filename in question is not always the same). The text of the error message is: 'C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\sfc_os.DLL is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support. Error status 0xc000012f.'

On login, the filename mentioned in the title is 'rundll32.exe', but I have also had other filenames pop up there, particularly when I run Lenovo's Solution Center software (including Lenovo's system update). Then filenames like tpknrres.exe and tvsucommandlauncher.exe appear in the error message title (but the rest of the error message remains the same, including the reference to sfc_os.dll)

I believe I am up to date with Windows Updates, and ran a Lenovo software update, though the error messages went crazy during that update.

I ran a sfc /scannow, and the response was 'Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them'. Looking in the CBS log (attached) I found references to the following four files being unable to be repaired:
'cmd132.exe', 'ctfmon.exe', 'sfc_os.dll' and 'mscorsvc.dll'

I then ran a DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth command, and got error 0x800f081f 'The restore operation failed. Either the repair source was not found or the compon... Read more

I re-imaged my system hard drive the other day after getting infected with a google redirect virus, and a lot of other nasty malware that was apparently smart enough to be able to tell what you're doing and shuts your system down after making it unbootable. Seems to have been a Java exploit.

I re-imaged the drive with a system image I made when the computer was new, after I had installed all the programs I wanted, to make such things easier rather than always having to do a fresh install from discs.

However, this time, after doing the re-image, (and updating Windows, plus removing Java) I did a scan with MSE and it detected

Exploit:Java/Toniper (the same thing I had prior to the re-image) and

Both of these were detected on single files located in the Java 6 Cache, I assume from the Java SSV Helper browser plugin in IE9 since the Java 7+ cache was removed when uninstalling the actual Java program.

There aren't any symptoms of the redirect or any other infections so far, I've run TDSSkiller and it comes up with nothing, so I'm just wondering if these are false positives, or if these things can really infect a system so badly that they can just resurrect themselves even after a re-image.

There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of info out there on Java/Toniper, apparently these exploits are supposed to be old news, but MSE keeps letting stuff like this by, and by the time it does (or when a manual full scan is performed) the sy... Read more

It is a possibility that you did inadvertently copy this virus to the image file.

You might want to do a clean install and see if the same problem presents itself. Since you stated that your system had multiple infections, this would be the safest course of action.

This is really annoying, but I set my lock screen image as my own image and every time I boot up my computer or log in/log out, the default lock screen image flashes right before my image. It is a real eye-sore.

I found the image in the windows folders, it is: C:\Windows\Web\Screen\img100.jpg. Deleting or modifying the image does not prevent it from still flashing there before I log in.

I am running win 8.1 with a Solid State Drive. The SSD is really fast, I wonder if that has anything to do with it?

Anyone else run into this problem and maybe have a solution?

Hi! I apologize in advance if this is in the wrong forum and if a thread on this subject already exists, I just couldn't think of any other place to put it.

I got Windows 8 and it's working pretty much perfect after I fixed a few issues. But there's an interesting thing happening, and I don't know if it's a 'feature' or something I can correct. When I go into one of my image folders and right click on one of my pictures to set it ask my desktop background, it will work, but then the image folder will scroll all the way all the way back up to the top, and it does this every single time.

This is kind of annoying, and I'm not sure why it does this... is there anything I can do about it, or am I missing something obvious?

Hi everyone. I'm new here, and I hope I can get some good answers (or fast at least lol).

So, here's the problem that needs to be fixed ASAP. I start Windows XP, and I let everything load. I pass the log-in screen (since the only user is 'owner'). Then, it shows the desktop background, which is a pretty picture of a corvette that I put on.

Yes, a nice picture. The mouse arrow appears. Anyway, I wait...and wait...and wait. Nothing happens. After 5 mins, the icons FINALLY show up. Everything is normal.

But those 5 mins of starting up MAY have started to happen after

A. I downloaded an upgrade from Microsoft for my Intel 82845G/GL/GE/PE/PV Graphics Controller 64 MB graphics card.

B. Installed Windows XP Service Pack 2(not sure if it actualy installed or not, how can I find that out?)

I need some help. I only have a few running processes when I load up Windows XP. I need this fixed by tonight. ASAP!

Also, links to Ad-Aware/Spybot or any other virus/spyware program won't help me. I'm sure this system is clean. Thank you...

A:Hmm, so only the desktop background appears...

What i would advise is you disable all startup programs using msconfig and reboot. if it boots up properly then you know its one of those startups causing the problem

Anytime I rebooted my computer, my background graphic changed with "Warning, your computer may be infected with a virus...." Then little bugs would crawl all over my desktop and start eating the icons. I followed all the instructions for removal. This is what I done so far:

1. I have Norton 360. I did a full system scan and removed anything it found
2. Downloaded and ran Super Antispyware (please see log below)
3. Downloaded and ran SS&D and removed anything it found
4. Downloaded and ran Adware 2007 and removed anything it found
5. Downloaded and ran Hijackthis (please see log below)

It appeared these tools resolved the issue. However, I would feel more confident if someone can review the Hijackthis log and let me know if there is anything hidden.

When I start my PC up a line of red dots appears across the monitor screen at the bottom of it. The line of dots again appears but higher up the screen when the windows screen appears. Both screens are dark in colour.

Also if I have a block of dark colour anywhere with a light coloured background about 3 or 4 lines (each line directly above the other) of red dots appear across most of this block of a dark colour but none in the light coloured background. In all cases the red dots do not form a continuous line across the screen.

After this series of error popups, the desktop background loads and that's it, no icons no taskbar or anything. When I press ctrl+alt+delete, the above error message comes up for the application taskmgr.exe.

I'm currently on the same computer in safe mode. Did a couple virus scans but same thing occurred. I'm not sure what to do. Would a repair install of windows xp do the trick? because it appears my floppy drive is broken, i can't do this because in the windows xp boot cd setup, i need to install my hard drive driver with a floppy because xp boot cd setup can't detect it, as it is a SATA hard drive. If this would fix the problem I'd have no problem getting another floppy drive. In any case, any advice would be... Read more

I believe ErrorSafe is a known malware and you are still infected since it still shows in some parts of your HJT log.

You should have posted this in the HijackThis section but don't create a new post, we'll move you there where security techs will examine your log. It can take some time before they come to your thread but don't bump your post since they start with the oldest.

Hi, I hope someone can help!

My Vista laptop goes to a black screen when it boots, after the 'Microsoft Corporation' ticker thing. Oddly though, it seems to still be running windows, just not showing me anything! If I leave it to boot, then use the Windows key and arrow keys to navigate to where I know the 'sleep' or 'shut down' options are, they work!

In safe mode it appears to stop loading drivers on 'crcdisk.sys', but does the same as above (whilst still showing the frozen driver loading screen, carries on loading windows in the background).

I have scanned the HD in a dock on another computer and it is healthy.

I have tried system restore using a Vista installation CD, no change.

All the other options to repair Windows etc on the Vista CD don't fix it.

I'm at a loss! I can access my data via another computer but I really need the laptop for my job!

Any ideas? Google yields lots of black screens, but none where it keep running in the background!

Thanks in advance!

Ahh, another unexplainable thing happened on my computer. And i caused it as usual, more than likely. My XP, the 2002 version, has refused to show anything except the neutral back ground after i login. It was the administrators account by the way. There was no start menu and the control-alt-delete function froze. Basically the computer is useless. i think it might be caused by a trojan virus. The day before it start acting weird it froze up on me when i was using the internet. All the windows closed, icons and start menu disappeared and i tried the task manager but nothing appeared on it. i turned it off and the next day it's messed up..

I don't really want to reinstall xp because i have too much stuff on there. If anyone know what's going on with my pc, please help.

Hi, I am running Windows XP. I just removed an abundance of viruses and spyware from the machine. Before removal one problem was the desktop had become white and the options for backgrounds in the display properties window were greyed out.

I have used many spyware utilities to remove all (or what seems to be all) of the spyware / viruses. Including scanning the pc with Avast and Symantec. I've also deleted all the registry items listed in other forums, including the instance of wallpaper.

What is happenin now is when I boot up the machine the desktop background appears but then goes away and I get a plain blue screens with the icons. The background is a standard windows background. I am hijack this log file. Thanks for any help.

I am running Win xp sp2 with AVG and ZA free editions. I use Firefox as my browser. The hard drive is 160gb with 2.85gh pentium 4 and 512 Mb of installed memory. I run Ad aware, CCleaner, Easy Cleaner, SB S&D, Spyware Blaster, ewido anti-malware and Scan defrag regularly & keep them updated.

The problem is that the Windows 'search results' box (asking me what i want to search for - pictures, documents, files etc) pops up repeatedly even though i have not initiated a search. The results boxes appear on top of whatever i am doing so that i have to click onto my internet page to make it active again. In say half a minute 30 or 40 search results boxes can appear. I close them down by 'close group' but they just reappear again. The problem is intermitant, but occurs at least once a day. Restarting helps for a short period of time, but the problem always comes back.

I'm not sure if this is linked, but also my inbox instead of showing a list of my emails sometimes changes to the 'google search page'. Again i need to restart the pc to get my inbox back to how it should be.

This problem started around the time that i downloaded a 'google update' a week or so ago. Not sure if this is just coincidence. I tried a system restore to a point before the download, but the problem remained.

I have run Ccleaner, Windows Malicious Software removal tool, Ad aware, SB S&D, Windows Defender, Bitdefender & Panda Active scan - and my sy... Read more

Hey all

Wondered if you could help, I'm running Windows 7 32-bit Ultimate and for some reason any .html files I have on my PC are showing the Internet Explorer icon even though I have Mozilla Firefox set as my default browser, it's a bit annoying, not a huge big deal obviously but it is still irritating, how can I change the .htm / .html icon to the firefox one?

By the way, I have tried right clicking and going to "open with" and choosing firefox and ticking the box "always open with...." and it makes no difference.

Thanks in advance

A:IE Icon appears on html files when Firefox is default?

Hello Simcut,

Double check in Default Programs to make sure that the .htm and .html file extensions are set to have their "Current Default" program as Firefox as well.

Hope this helps,

Hi all,

I just received my Dell XPS 13 (Early 2015 version). I have the matte display version.
Now everything is working fine with the laptop, except the fact that whenever the laptop displays any white backgrounds (say this forum/ a word file) it seems as if the display is somewhat greasy (although this is obviously not the case). It seems as if there is some kind of grainy texture or a layer of grease on the display (at least this is the best way I can think of to describe it). Now this effect is most clearly recognizable if I put the brightness to the maximum.  If I turn down the brightness or lean the display more towards me (thereby changing the viewing angle) this effect seems to disappear.
I am not sure whether anyone else  had a similar issue. I have to say that I am changing to this laptop from my old laptop, which had a glossy display, so I might just need to get used to the new display. But I still wanted to check whether this might not be a defect with the display.
Thanks for the help!

Other people have noticed what you said including me. You learn to ignore it over time but some screens are worse than others. I also experienced issues with dark spots on 2 units I was sent before I got a good one. Well I say good in that it had no dark spots, the 2 dead motherboards in 13 months says otherwise.....

This is driving me around the bend!!
I installed MS Office Pro '97 and it worked fine with the exception of the Help files. I uninstalled Outlook. I started Windows Mail and was advised that Windows Mail is not my default email client and I selected Yes to change that.

Each time I start Windows Mail, this message is repeated.

I went to set Windows Mail as my default but it does not appear in the list of programs in the "Set Default Programs" window, nor does it appear anywhere under "Set Program Access and Computer Defaults"

Any help would be greatly appreciated. HP referred me to Microsoft. I've searched the knowledge base with no luck.

Hey everyone,

I have a problem I'm hoping you all can help me with. I'm trying to fix a computer for a friend but everytime I start the computer, NOTHING appears on the monitor. I've tried every type of check I can think of, hooking it up to another monitor, securing every part on the motherboard, checking the wires and processor for burns, etc. The fans run properly but nothing comes up, nor does the computer beep.

The computer is a Compaq Presario 6400 NX. Piece of crap if you ask me. The video card is embedded onto the motherboard. But at any rate, nothing looks wrong physically but I simply can't get anything onto the monitor. What do I do?

On bootup the mIRC32 program automatically loads. I have not installed this program and I assume that it's a malware/virus of some kind.
If I do not manually close it down, eventually the machine freezes.
I have scanned using AVG Free 8.5 with the latest definitions and also superantispyware also with the latest definitions.
I have done this both in normal and in safe mode.
I've checked the msconfig file and also searched the registry for any entries of mIRC but I cannot find anything.
I notice a couple of 'khq' and 'khr' files which have no extensions and have zero size - dunno what they are but I don't recall seeing them previously.
What can I do to remove it without formatting of course?
WinXP SP3.

I have IE7 running on XP. Through Tools/Manage Add-Ins I have disabled 4 items - Adobe PDF Reader Link (Acrobat Helper), Google Toolbar, Google Helper and Google Notifier. Yet (after a reboot) all 4 of these still appear in my startup list, as shown by an extract from my HiJackThis log:-

O3 - Toolbar: &Google - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - c:\program files\google\googletoolbar2.dll

Why do they still load after I have disabled them?

A:Disable Ie7 Add-in, Yet Still Appears In Startup

Try using AutoRuns to see if they are still set to startup, if so you can disable them from within AutoRuns. To get rid of the Google toolbar completely you can remove it using Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. I'm not sure about the Adobe PDF Reader Link Helper, but you will probably need to disable that somewhere in Adobe.

I get a folder appear each time I start my win XP laptop. It appears on the desktop and has the name of a folder I have deleted a few months ago that was full of mp3 files.

Any advice to find out what is causing it to reappear and how to stop it?

when you say it appears do you mean it is sitting on your desktop and wont go away, or it opens itself and sits there forcing you to interact with it?
and it could be a program is using those files and as a result it keeps bringing it back.
