Problem backing up to networked PC

Q: Problem backing up to networked PC

Hi

I have an irritating problem with backing up data at work. We have a Win2kserver and use Areca, an open-source backup program to create backup scripts and schedule them using windows task scheduler.

All data is backed up each day to a removable portable HDD no problem. I have also created a script that executes a backup to the HDD of a client PC running windows XP.

I have created a shared folder on the HDD of the client pc and mapped it as drive B:\ on the server. The client PC is always on, and power settings have been changed to 'always on'. The user stays logged in to the domain, and locks the workstation.

The backup seems to fail. When I check the folder on the client PC in the mornings, there is nothing in there. Any ideas?

It would be great to be able to backup data to that PC as well as the removable portable HDD. I am trying to avoid getting a network storage device if possible.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hard to say, but I'd try a sample backup in that configuration and watch what happens. What does any backup log or the event log say about the backup process?

I've added a networked printer (Brother model attached via USB to an XP home computer) and I can print a test page from the printer properties page with no problem.

But when I try to print from Word or Wordpad or IE, when I click File/Print it sits there for about 2 minutes saying Connecting to Printer in the status bar, then the print dialog finally comes, and after I click Print it waits about another 2 minutes before it prints.

When I installed the printer, it said it was getting a driver from the machine that the printer is attached to, (but I'm not sure how it could since that is an XP machine).

I tried uninstalling/re-installing, did not help.

As a test, I connected the printer directly to my computer, and Vista is able to configure it and print normally without the need for a driver disk or download. But when returned to the original configuration, it still cannot print quickly over the network.

The odd thing is that this computer used to print fine to that printer via the network, but since I restored a Ghost image from 18 months ago and had to re-install the printer, it no longer prints correctly.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I phoned the ISP and they confirmed that the smtp address is correct as well as the username and password.
Is there any other setting that must be changed to make the second pc able to send and receive on its own account?

Can someone help us? I had my pc & printer connected to ADSL broadband modem (via telephone line socket), and then a computer tech networked my laptap to my PC & printer using a wireless router,. which was somehow joined to the wireless modem.
We have now moved house, and we can't afford tech person to come so far to replicate the situation. We don't have ADSL in our new region (too remote) but we have wireless (works brilliantly too!!) using a new wireless multi-computer modem.
Hence, the PC and laptop are on wireless, ..but what of the printer in regards to the laptop??? I've asked both computers to share, the laptop says it's sharing/networking with the main, it says it's conected to printer (Canon Mp800), the network connections say all the right things. I've hooked the router in but i think I have it wrongly connected. I have the router joined to wireless modem as an extension, hoping that it will pick up the laptop signals for the printer.

Hope someone can help

One of our office printers is a HP LaserJet4000. Unfortunately, the NIC card went bad on the unit, so we went out and purchased another one and plugged it in. To get it to work on the network, we have to give it a static IP. When we try to use the little control panel on the printer, we aren't able to set it because the menu software keeps resetting when attempt to put the IP address in.

To add insult to injury, any Apple computers on our network see it just fine -- although we haven't set the IP on it. I don't understand that one at all!

Does anyone know if there is some kind of computer-based way to assign the IP to the printer without using the control panel on the printer itself? Can we connect to it via an ethernet cable and then set the IP that way? We've researched the HP web site, but can't find any other way to set it besides the control panel.

Thanks in advance for any and all replies to this request for help!

Ok, So, i have four computers one is XP Pro, two are windows 7 and one is Vista. In my XP machine i have a master drive and I also have a slave drive. I would like to share my slave drive (as i have always done) so i can access it from any computer on my LAN. Now, I can map the drive with the windows 7 machines so i know it works and i know its shared correctly with the correct permissions and double click to access it.

When I map this drive in Vista it does add the drive under "network locations" section under my computer. However, i cannot double click to open it. The only way i can open it is to right click and hit explore/open and it works. I would like to create a desktop shortcut to this. When i double click it does not give me any errors, it just sits there; helplessly.

Now, for just fun and games. I created another folder on this XP machine and shared it, and i was able to map to it AND double click to open it. So... i don't know what the difference is other than one is a folder on the C: and the other is an actual HDD.

I have done quite a bit of research and most said to look for autorun.ini (and inf, .exe) in the root folder of the slave drive. Non there. I have ran malware and viral scans on the slave drive and both primary drives. (xp and vista machine). I have disconnected and reconnected this network drive probably 200 times. I have tried to manually make a shortcut (right click > shortcut > path > etc) and it does the same. I have no othe... Read more

I am running two systems, one Windows XP and on the other computer Windows 2000. The printer on the 2000 broke, so I set it up to use the printer on the XP system.

I got it working, but now on the XP system, the first time I attempt to connect to the internet (AFTER A REBOOT)I get a WORK OFFLINE box that says: No connection to the internet is currently available. To view Internet content that has been saved on your computer, click Work offline. Click try again to attempt to connect. When I click try again it connects and then anytime I click on IE after that it will connect no problem. Until the next reboot and then same thing happens.

On the 2000 system, when I boot it up I now get a sign on to windows screen, I press ok and it finishes rebooting. It wasn't giving me that screen before.

What did I change when I was installing the printer??

Thank you for your help.

A:interesting problem with old networked computer

When you're logging on to the system, is is trying to log onto a domain? Or do you know if it used to be part of a domain? Because these (lack of internet and internet connection wizard) are Group Policy security settings.

Try removing it from the domain (if it is on one), don't forget it doesn't need to be physically connected because credentials are cached. Removing from a domain is tricky without the domain controller, however someone might know how to do it.

They can all use the same printer and DSL connection, but that is about it. As far as the internet connection goes, there is a great deal of trouble accessing email through outlook express (by the way all are Win XP). The same computer can pretty much always access Outlook, the others are rather chancey. To make things even more confusing no one id really sure which computer they are all networked through. Any ideas????????????

I have networked two computer with printers attached to each.
PC1 is “guy”, with a brother printer attached
PC2 is “Susan” with a HP 1100 attached

In the past I had no difficulty with networking the computers and have access from each computer to each of the printers.

I up graded the computer Susan and I am now having a few problems that I never had before.

After I perform the Network Setup Wizard on each of the computers (in many different methods) I am having the following problems.

First, every now and then I am getting the following message after double clicking on Entire Network then Microsoft Windows Network:

Entire Network
Not enough storage is available to process this command.

If I wait a few moments I will get the MSHOME and am allowed to click on that.
After this I do see both guy and Susan. If I double click on guy I see items pop up.
If I click on Susan I get the following message:

\\Susan is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network path is not found.

Of course I can not add the printer from Susan either. Though I have had no problem adding the printer from guy to Susan. And it prints properly.

What am I doing wrong…

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration….

History
Two days ago, I tried to print on my network printer and the computer showed that the printer was offline. After a few hours of working things out I was able to get the printer back online. Bascially I had to remove the printer from "devices and printers" and somehow it installed itself. I was happy, I was able to print I sat the pritner as default.

Here is the problem.

There are two computers on the network.

Computer A, which only has the network printer and Computer B which has a local printer connected to it. When I set the network printer to default on computer A, it becomes default on Computer B as well. I do not want this. I want Computer A to have the wifi printer default and computer B to have the local printer default.

But everytime I set the default on computer b to the local computer, it removes the default network printer on computer A.

What am I doing wrong? If you need any additional information, please let me know.

The Problem: I have a one-way problem on a home network where one desktop (A) easily shares files from its C-drive through the router with the other desktop (B), but not vice versa. In other words, it is easy to access and transfer files from desktop A to B, but not from B to A.
Other facts:
1. Desktops A and B have identical and up-to-date operating systems: Windows 7 64-bit Professional
2. The networking settings for A and B appear to be identical, and both show one another’s hard-drives in the “Computer” display, along with other devices on the home network. Care has been taken under Network Location when mapping each desktop’s hard drive by the other that drive names are unique.
3. Both A and B appear on the home network map, along with all other networked devices. All appears normal.
4. I have applied the network troubleshooters regarding connections to other computers, and it cannot see a problem. I have not been able to find any others in the community with the problem.
What could be the cause of this disparity?
Thanks,

Do you have the latest updates and service packs for IE6 on your laptop as well as your desktop? Run Windows update to be sure.

Please go to http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/, and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log as a .txt file, and copy and paste its contents into your next post.

Most of what it lists will be harmless, so do not fix anything yet. I don't know how to read it p) but others here do and may find something that could be causing this.

I've got a problem with backing up my hard drive. I'm running a Win 7 Pro, in a HP #p6720f, and normally use FireFox as my browser. I have a Seagate, 1 TB external hard drive. I use Acronis as my back up program.

I've tried three times to back up my system. Each time I use it, it takes over 12 hours to get to a problem screen that says, "E00070004 Failed to write data ti the archive file. A possible reason might be poor media quality."

The first time I got another box saying I have used up all the space on my external hd. I went and opened up and deleted all but my last back up. This gave me between 30 & 40% open. I don't know I can do next. Any help???

peteski

A:Backing up problem

If it's the Acronis software that's causing the problem, Windows 7 has it's own built-in utility for creating a system image so you may want to try that instead: Control Panel > Backup & Restore > Create system image

If you decide to use that utility you will also need to create a system disc with the Backup & Restore utility.
This is bootable and allows you to access the system image when it's required.

The only downside of using the built-in system image creator is that it insists on writing the image in the root of the selected drive (ie you can't choose a folder as the destination).

I use Microsoft Money 2004 to keep track of my household and personal expenses and I also use a flash drive to back-up my financial database in case of disaster and I am experiencing a problem that has me scratching my head.

Microsoft Money automatically backs up the database to a location on my hard drive every time I exit the program. I also do a 'manual' back-up to a flash drive about once a week and this is where the problem comes up.

I am using a San Disc 4 Gig 'Cruzer' U3 type flash drive. I have disabled the U3 function on the flash drive. Whenever I try to back-up my financial data base Microsoft Money gives me a message that the 'floppy disc in 'F' drive is full, please insert a second disc to finish the back-up'. If I simply click on 'Continue' the program supposedly finishes the back-up.

The compressed size of the database as reported by my Microsoft Money program is 600 Meg and I have 2.5 Gig free on my flash drive so I can't figure out why I would be getting this message but I am very concerned as to the security of my back-ups.

I have checked all of the settings in Microsoft Money and I can't see anything amiss.

I have several questions:

1) Why am I seeing this message?

2) What has happened to cause this message?

3) Is this a problem? IE: Do I think I have a back-up but in reality I don't have a back-up?

4) How do I fix this problem or do I just go ahead and ignore it?

Thanks!

A:Problem Backing Up To Flash Drive

Well, IMO first step would be to make sure that your flash drive indeed has the letter F. Maybe it changed from the last time you've backed up?

Also, if you don't have anything important on the flash drive, you could format it. If you have Windows Vista and up - you could format it with NTFS partition type.

Desktop in Office (Windows 7) . Wife's Laptop (Windows 7). My laptop ( Vista unfortunately). Norton Security Suite and all three. I have a network setup and a Homegroup established.

Everything was setup and working so that I could share files between all three. My wife was able to open a desktop file make changes and save it back to the desktop computer.

All of that changed. Now we get a message when trying to save the file. "You do not have permission to save in this location. Contact the administrator to obtain permission".

I have given the entire "MY Documents" sharing permission to everyone.

I have checked everything. I have looked over all kinds of forums and nothing has worked.

I am to the point of doing a complete reinstall of Windows 7 on my Desktop. I have spent tens of hours on this.

Any ideas?

A:Networked Computers - can't save files on networked Computers

Disable Norton on the Desktop, see if that fixes it. If not try disabling it on the other computers.

Do this only for testing. Re-enable when done. If it fixes the problem then you need to look at Norton to see how to allow access from the other computers.

A:Backing up files with TDL3/TDL4 problem

Should you decide to reformat or do a factory restore due to malware infection, you can back up all your important documents, personal data files, photos to a CD or DVD drive, not a flash drive or external hard drive as they may become compromised in the process. The safest practice is not to backup any executable files (*.exe), screensavers (*.scr), autorun (.ini) or script files (.php, .asp, .htm, .html, .xml ) files because they may be infected by malware. Avoid backing up compressed files (.zip, .cab, .rar) that have executables inside them as some types of malware can penetrate compressed files and infect the .exe files within them. Other types of malware may even disguise itself by hiding a file extension or adding to the existing extension as shown here (click Figure 1 to enlarge) so be sure you look closely at the full file name. If you cannot see the file extension, you may need to reconfigure Windows to show file name extensions. Then make sure you scan the backed up data with your anti-virus prior to to copying it back to your hard drive. If your CD/DVD drive is unusable, another word of caution if you are considering backing up to an external usb hard drive as your only alternative. External drives are more susceptible to infection and can become compromised in the process of backing up data. -when I start windows live mail (v2009 final version) it said this :
Windows Live Mail could not be started. The application was unable to open the Windows Live Mail message store. Windows Live Mail was unable to locate it`s message database. If you`ve moved the database filesto a new location.clik OK to resetthe database path to that location. Otherwise, click Cancel to proceed, any existing messages found will be avaible under Orphaned Accounts. (0x000000000, 2)
-if I click OK it said :

Please help me back up my email!

Thank you!

Hello leinaday & welcome to Vista Forums.
If your Anti Virus Program has an email scanning component turn it off to see if that makes a difference.
BTW What Anti Virus are you using?
Another thing to try - right click on your Windows Live Mail shortcut on your Desktop - select "Run as Administrator" - click on "Continue " if User Account Control requests it.
Hope that helps.

I back up my Outlook.pst file to an external hard drive, but when I try to recover for various dates in Windows File History, it just shows an Outlook.pst file with a few kilobytes in a white shaded out form, not like my archive.pst, etc. which gets backed up and looks like a regular yellow and white Outlook.pst file. I simultaneously back up ALL the same files (automated) to the cloud and to an attached SD card with Crashplan and when recovery is attempted, they all appear to have backed up properly. I'm using Outlook 2010.

Half of the folders are empty! Just the empy folder got copied. Any ideas/suggestions? The project covered about 2 discs. I looked at the 2nd disc and more than half of the folders were empty. Tried the first disk and each time I tried opening a file it stopped responding and eventually Windows Explorer shut itself down.

I tried the fourth time and autoplay kicked in and when I tried to click on a file to see if it was actually on the disc it asked me if I wanted to retrieve it and send it back to it's previos location. Isn't there a way to just make a DVD+R that has all the files on it so I can just open the file I want like you used to do on a diskette or a CD-R???

I might just have to say screw it and go get an external hard drive because I'm about to throw my laptop out the window because of all my problems with the stupid DVD burner! UGH!!!

A:Tried backing up files using Roxio Creator Classic- one problem

Don’t know about Creator Classic, but I’d guess that the Laptop burner is OK, it was just given bad instructions.

External HDs are the way to go. May I suggest, shopping for an External HD Enclosure - then shopping for sales on internal HDs. You can get more gigs for the buck this way.

Don’t throw the laptop out the window, you could hurt someone. Ship it to me instead.

My new Precision 3520 mobile workstation is down after only 3 days of use, OS won't start normally. I decided to return it anyway.
So I need to back up hard drive data first. But new problems prevented me from doing it...
Info on my Precision 3520:OS: Ubuntu 16.04HDD: Seagate ST500LM021, 500GB 7200RPM
What I did:Take out the Precision 3520 hard drive, and connect it as a USB device to my old Inspiron N5050 laptop (runs windows 7). The connection is done via an Insignia SATA-to-USB 3.0 converter, it worked fine with other HDD of comparable model (a Seagate Momentus 5400.6, 500GB 5400RPM).
Problem:Upon connection, the driver is successfully installed, but the HDD shows up as having only 2GB size, with only OS files inside. The rest 400+GB of disk, with user data, can't be found.
How to solve this?
Just in case if you need this -- the Precision 3520 can't enter OS desktop. After displaying the Ubuntu start up logo, it got stuck there with black screen, keyboard not responsive, but the following error message pops on and off once every 2-3 seconds:[***:*****] pcieport 0000:00:1c.0: PCIe bus error: severity=corrected, type=data link layer, id=00e0(transmitter ID)[***:*****] pcieport 0000:00:1c.0: device [8086:a111] error status/mask=00001000/00002000[***:*****] pcieport 0000:00:1c.0: [12] Replay timer timeout (Note: those *** are some random numbers)
Running the pre-boot hardware diagnosis shows all devices are normal. And it can still enter BIOS setting.

Instead of removing the hard drive I would have used another PC to create a bootable DVD of some flavor of Linux.
Anyway, I wonder if it is something to the partitioning of the hard drive.

Home network was previously all WIN 7. One PC was upgraded to WIN 10 and now I cannot access between the two. I would "assume" it is a permissions thing but cannot seem to find it.

The WIN 7 PC cannot access the WIN 10 PC and the reverse is also true.

The WIN 10 PC cannot see the WIN 7 PC.

Guidance if you please??!!

Hi,

I am a student worker and I am having a problem with a small project that I'm working on.

I have a user that wants one of our computer labs to have his networked printer added into the list of available printers. The Printer is a Brother HL-5250DN, and I already have the .inf driver. I have written a script but it does not seem to work. I am replacing the printers IP address with a generic loopback for my example.

My Script:

rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /in 127.0.0.1 /ia /f C:\Brother\BRHL5250\BROHLA5A.inf

I put the script and .inf driver file on the server and sent the job to a computer to test it, and it failed and I am receiving error "0X00000709". Basically the error is saying that the printer cannot be found, but this is the IP address that the faculty member supplied. Any ideas as to what I did wrong, and/or how to improve this script?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I've had the following continuing trouble connecting my laptop to my home network through a wireless connection. The trouble has occurred for both a Netgear router and the Linksys WRT54GS I replaced it with (for other reasons).

The trouble is that although the laptop connects quickly and reliably to the Internet through the router, its connection to other PCs on the network is unpredictable. Most of the time it does not see the other computers on the network. Sometimes it does for a while, then the connection or disappears again. The same is true from the other end. My main desktop PC sometimes sees the laptop. Sometimes it doesn't. From both ends the computers occasionally show each other as present, but attempts to connect give me a "access denied/you may not have permission..." message. On the occasions when the laptop does connect one way or the other, everything works fine: file sharing, printing, etc. 10 minutes later, no good again.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm tired of having to make file transfers during the rare harmonic convergences between computers.

When I go to add the UPS networked printer I go through the motions of setting up a printer. It then says I need to install the driver before going any further. It starts to add the driver and then I get this error message. "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Cannot creat a file when that file already exists." I go into my server properties and delete the driver it says already exists. I go back to add the printer and the same thing happens. The driver I had deleted reappears in the server properties driver tab. How can I get this working. I am totally able to network regular printers, why can't I do this one?

I have two laptops on the same desk. I am using wi-fi for both of them. How can I share files between the two? Do I need a 'switch'? Can I connect the two together? Or can I find each of the two on the wi-fi network?

A:2 Laptops Networked Together

Voice. You need to setup a HomeGroup. Go to search and type in HomeGroup. It should look something like this. From here I am not sure??? " I have not tried this with W10." My Imaging server has 6 desktops that share the Images on that server. "It is W7" All connected with a HomeGroup. REO

I have an HP Laserjet 3015 connected to an XP 32 bit PC downstairs and a Win 7 64 bit PC upstairs. I cannot seem to get the Win 7 PC to find the drivers etc for the printer. I've tried downloading vista 64 bit and all other drivers for the printer but still no joy. Any ideas guys, would be most appreciated. Thanks

A:Win 7 to networked XP printer

Welcome to the land of 64-bit, where drivers are hit or miss.

I would try connecting the printer to the Windows 7 computer and see if Windows update can find some drivers for it. Once the drivers are installed (if any), then you can move the printer back to the XP machine and it should work.

EDIT: here's another thing to try (try this first):
XP to 7 Printer sharing

Good luck.

I've recently set up my two computers for networking and haven't been able to set up the printer. I have a Windows 2000 and a Windows 98. My printer is a BJC-3000 and is hooked up to the Windows 2000. Canon tells me that this printer cannot be networked. Surely, there is some other way to sent a file for printing from the Windows 98 to the qeue in the Windows 2000. Any suggestions?

Hi there,

I have a relatively new Dell computer that was, up until recently networked wih 4 other computers. My roommate who did the networking did something to the computer so that he could control everything from his laptop (when the password screen popped up, he had to use his wireless keyboard from his laptop to enter it into the Dell).

Here is my problem - my roommate moved out (and very far away) and when I go to turn on my Dell computer now, the password screen pops up, but the mouse and keyboard that is plugged in do not work. I've tried a USB keyboard and a PS2 keyboard and neither work.

I know the password, but is there anything I can do to enable my keyboard and mouse?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kristy

A:Computer was networked, now it's not.

I would consider asking which program he used to do this to you computer, throw me reply with that information. My guess is that a driver is installed that is still in "lock-out" state... Attempt to load in safe mode for now. When you post back, I'll seek a permanent solution for you! =D Cheers!

Hi there, I’m hoping that someone here is able to give me some advice that is causing me major headaches relating to two printers on the home network that manage to offer up the combination of being able to print, sometimes print and never print (the latter when I’m generally away on business and the family are trying to print stuff!).

My network consists of:
· Netgear DG834g router
· 4 xWindows XP machines
· HP DeskJet D2460, connected to the LAN via a Netgear mini print server PS121v2
· Dell laser 1110, connected to the LAN via a Netgear mini print server PS121v2
· The print servers have their IP addresses reserved and these match in the set up of the router
· All machines run antivirus with windows firewall turned off (one machine is trialling PC tools firewall plus at the moment)
· The printers are generally powered off at the wall when the office isn’t in use, but not the servers (not sure if this is an issue..).
· I also have a Netgear Readyduo NAS which has the ability to be a print server but this doesn’t appear to work either.

I have installed the printers onto the machines when directly plugged into then to ensure that they work and then progressed with the mini print server set up and successfully installed onto the network (port settings reflect the virtual printer port in the printer properties). I can usually get a test print out them and then it appears to be pot luck if they print again....

My computer has been hijacked and my permissions have been relegated to a subservient role. It has been networked and a server has been installed and I cannot remove my machine from the network nor control who connects or runs the server. The network adapters cannot be uninstalled nor permanently disabled. I have used five different computers with different operating systems including a Mac laptop. All systems have been either rendered inoperable or taken over. I have spent hundreds of dollars taking the computers to technicians and be declared clean only to plug them in at home and immediately have the same thing happen. I have put new HD'S in and taken the CMOS' battery out reverting to default and installing a new Windows Home Edition service pack 2 OS only to have the same experience with networked controlled results. I have tried numerous firewalls and virus protections, ie.., Norton, Mcaffee, Nod32, Zone Alarm, AVG, Sygate, et., al, none could get to the core prroblem. I know this sounds like the Twilight Zone, but believe me this experience is very real and has been ongoing for four months. I downloaded HJT and could run the first scan but none of the Misc. Tools scans would scan. I booted into safe mode and scanned and fixed all 34 listings and rebooted only to have the deleted items reinstalled. If anyone has any clues as to how to eliminate this nightmare I would be very grateful.
