My video card is not working properly since I upgraded my OS from win98 to win98 SE

Q: My video card is not working properly since I upgraded my OS from win98 to win98 SE

I Have a WinFast 3D S900 video card, and I can't get it to work properly since I upgraded my OS from Win98 to Win98 SE.
I already tried to update the BIOS and the drivers from the internet and nothing worked.
Now the resolution of my screen is only 600X800 and it shows only 16 colors.
Whenever I try to change the resolution or the colors, it tells me that the addapter is incorrect or my hardware does not support my settings.
What can I do?

Preferred Solution: My video card is not working properly since I upgraded my OS from win98 to win98 SE

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Have you tried removing the adapter from the control panel, restarting and allowing windows to find it again?

Also, take a look at what is showing up under monitor.

I am really scared right now because I upgraded from Win98 to Win2000 and I understood the compatability issues, so I continued to install and I got to a point about "winnt32.exe on boot sector - press C to continue, I forgot the 2nd option, and E to exclude. Guess which one I chose? I clicked on E to exclude. I guess boot sector scared me so that's why I chose the E option. Was I incorrect in choosing that option?
In addition, now I want to uninstall Win2000 and go back to 98 - I can't seem to locate the Win2000 Folder anywhere on my hard drive. I see a folder called Winnt, but there is nothing in there for uninstalling. I put the Win2000 CD in and do not see anything about unintalling. On the CD it only has 5 options to choose from.

In addition, as it was installing, it looked like it was copying files into DOS because at the bottom of the screen I was actually seeing black text, but when Win2000 Professional starts, I get the Win2000 Professional screen, log-on etc.

In short, could someone please show me how to locate these files to uninstall or how to go into DOS to locate them. I looked in the Find Files or Folders, it listed two files for winnt32 and both are the same text document. One is located in C:\Windows and the second one is C:\Documents and Settings and my name.

Could someone please tell me what does this all mean.

Thanking you in advance.

Both text document reads the same as follows:

I am wondering if anyone has an opinion about the best way to remove windows 98 from my C drive and convert to windows 2000.

Here's the details.
I originally had win98 installed in my C drive and then installed win 2000 on my D drive. I now run in win2k solely and am running out of space on my C drive. I have also run into a few problems that look like they might be related to the dual boot configuration.

Anyway since I don't want, need, or use 98 I want to remove it and run solely with win 2k.

The options I am considering are:
- Remove win 2k from D drive, and then reinstall win 2k over 98 and reformat the C drive to be NTFS for better security etc. This looks messy and prone to error.
- Install win 2k over win 98 and reformat C drive without removing the D win 2k installation. Then reformat the D Drive to get rid of win2k. I would do this using the win2k 4 3.5 floppy installation disks and the win2k CD.

I realize I will need to reinstall all my current applications and drivers but I believe that is a fact of life when doing this type of thing.

Any suggestions as to which is better or what the best procedure is?

Before I wiped out my dual boot system last week, I had previously found a way in W2K's Control Panel to set my system to boot to Win98(which all my family uses) in a certain number of seconds unless I tell it to use W2K.

But I can't remember where it was now. And would like to set it that way again.

Can someone tell me, please?

I dont know what kind of nic this old box of mine has and I have no idea how to find out what it is or what brand it is. I used belarc advisor but I couldnt find anything it probably just looks for installed components. It used to work but I formated and did a dresh install of win98 but now my nic card doesnt work. Does anyone know if I can get a generic 10/100 driver for this nic card? I dont remember all that good but I think I might have seen its name in the device manager as Lynksys or d link but to be real Im not sure at all.

I have tried all the lynksys drivers available in win 98 (fresh install) . It is a pci adapted NIC. Should I just buy a new NIC card? I have mandrake 9.1 and I have never tried it should I use that OS instead?

I am having trouble connecting these 2 computers. My good one has xp pro on it and my bad one has 98. Xp has the modem and 98 has none. I used to be able to connect to the internet on 98 through xp but I could never connect file sharing wise at all. I have folders shared.

But now I can't even do either. I am using tcp/ip and netbeui on 98 but I did not see any netbeui on xp. . .maybe that is what I need. If not, what do you think the trouble is?

Oh, by the way, I did use the automatic setup with xp and then put it on a floppy and installed on the 98 and my firewall is down.

When I try to start Explorer, a window pops up stating that Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and must close; I have the option of notifying Microsoft, but the program does not open.
Most likely related: When I try to open "My Computer" or the Control Panel or almost any folder, I get an error message in a window titled "Explorer", and the message states, "This program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down." Persistence, however -- almost always by the 3rd time -- enables me to open the desired folder despite the error message.
Spybot, Ad Aware, Spy Doctor, and AVG are blind to whatever is going wrong with Explorer because they all report clear. Admittedly, this problem began after I found myself on a bad webpage; Spy Doctor and AVG responded to the page, though, as soon as I got there, so I thought all was well, and I didn't take notes or screen shots as I typically have done the few times I have encountered trouble. So I figure some residue must have been left undeleted by the protection programs or some element simply got through and remains hidden....
I did find and isolate an unfamiliar program called CLFMON, but I haven't found any online information on it apart from recent queries from people experiencing the same problems I've noted above.

Let's start with a look inside for malware:

Please download HijackThis. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Run a scan and save the log file. Post the whole log file here. Do not fix anything since most of them listed there are harmless (some are system required). This program will help us determine if there is any spyware/malware on your computer.

In the interim, I'll get a mod to move this over to the Hijack This forum.

Hope anyone can help...

I've just been tidying the insides of PC with some-cable ties. Took out graphics card and put back in. Now when loading computer I get all the normal loading messages, etc but as soon as computer gets as far as loading windows 98, monitor doesn't register anything. Windows definitely loads as i can hear the startup sound and i can shutdown using [windows key] [return]

I'm guessing the graphics card must have gone wrong when I took it out? Its a NVIDIA one. Not sure on any other details...

Please help me!!! Any ideas?

A:Win98 Graphics not working???

Uninstall and reinstall the the Video Card drivers. You will have to enter Safe Mode to do this. Check Add/remove programs first then remove any remaining entries in Device Manager.

You can get the latest Nvidia drivers from www.nvidia.com

You can also try changing the Refresh Rate while in Safe Mode. Its under Display Properties -> Advanced.

Greetings all,

I recently obtained a USB 6-in-1 card reader (generic, model no: CR-T3-U6S) for writing to the SD cards I use in my PDA.

As I am running Windows 98SE, it was necessary to install the provided drivers before using the unit. Unfortunately, driven by blind instinct, I first plugged the unit in, then specified the provided CD as the location of the drivers. This was before I read in the documentation that one must install the software BEFORE plugging in the unit.

Upon attempting to use the reader, I found that while new drives appeared in My Computer denoting each slot, my SD card couldn't be read. Instead, it said that the card was not formatted (which it definitely is), and asked if I wanted it to be formatted (which I definitely do not!) I don't have any other card types to try at the moment.

I tried removing the reader and installing it again (this time as per the instructions), but to no avail. Still the same problem.

Can anyone help me with this? Have I caused the problem by installing the drivers with the unit plugged in, or is there some other cause? Note that I've tried plugging the unit directly into the USB port (ie. without using a hub) and it made no difference. Other USB devices are working fine.

Thanks in anticipation.

I recently decided to convert my old Dell Inspiron 3800 laptop running Windows 98se into my on-the-go wireless internet computer to take with me to hotspots. To clean out years of accumulated junk, spyware adware and old device drivers etc. I reformatted the harddrive and reinstalled Windows 98se clean from the original Dell OEM CD-ROM that came with the computer. Next, I installed a D-Link 802.11b wireless PCMCIA card that I purchased second hand. I installed the drivers and the card is working properly according to Windows. I am able to detect and connect to two different wireless access points in my apartment building, both run by neighbors who offered to let me test my setup on their networks. My problem is that even though the card connects and gets a strong signal...Windows will not connect to the internet. I go through the Internet Connection Wizard and tell it I am connecting through a LAN and to use all automatic detection settings, but when I click finish at the end...no connection. TCP-IP protocol appears in the list of installed protocols under Control Panel - Network Settings. What else should I be doing to get Windows to recognize the wireless card as the internet connection? Thanks in advance!!

A:Win98 and Connecting through Wireless Card

I'm going to move your thread to the networking forum, where I think you will find more help with wireless problems.

For clarification, you have no problem connecting to your own ISP through a wired connection? It's just when you try to connect to the internet though the wireless, tested on a neighbors setup that, while the device is recognized, no connection is possible?

Howabout testing it at a local hotspot, perhaps a library or starbucks?

I am setting up an old IBM 300PL (Model no. 6862-110)

I have installed Win98SE, and most things now work fine.

But the graphics card isn't working correctly, and obviously has the wrong driver (it's in 16 colours and low resolution, and won't offer anything else)

I checked the archive and found instructions for downloading a Matrox driver - but having tried it, this machine obviously doesn't have a Matrox card in it, as the installation programme couldn't find one.

Any suggestions as to possible cards and/or drivers to get it up to at least 256 colours would be much appreciated.

Why not download and run this free program to see if it does not give you more information about the onboard card. Not sure it will help, but if you can find out exactly what it is, then you might be able to run down workable drivers:

Download and install this free program and it will tell you about everything about your computer.

The video card that I would like to continue to use because it fits all my gaming needs is:

Msi N260GTX-T2D896-OC

It's an oldie, but a goodie.

Is there some kind of hardware conflict? This card worked right before the switch. I would just like to get it working. This card has 2 6 pin PCI spots for power. Should I be running both of them or just 1 6 pin PCI power cord from the PSU? (I've tried both and have had no luck but knowing for sure is a better bet).

A:Win98 locks up seaching for sound card

Sound cards can be upsetting sometimes to say the least. First remove and uninstall everything, including any programs that may have installed to use the sound system. Restart the computer, install the new drivers for the sound card, turn off the computer and install the card. At boot up make sure you have disabled any internal cards if you have one then when windows restarts it should find the new hardware, just point it to the drivers you allready installed. One last thing make sure if there are any jumper setting on the sound card they are set to plug-N-play.

A:D link pci wireless network card in win98

Hey Neo,

Just so I understand...

Everyone has XP and you are having problems with 98. If you want to access network computers for file or print sharing you need to move the protocol to NetBIOS or NetBEUI over TCP/IP - this is the simplest.

Better yet - but since your dealing with other peoples computers, don't know if they would like this - Move all print and file sharing to IPX/SPX NetBEUI. Get it off TCP/IP/NetBIOS all together.

98 will not communicate with XP without some kind of NETBios/NetBEUI overlaying your BASIC protocol - Good Luck.

I got a wireless card... an "Amigo 914W" Which I've come to find out is based on the "Ralink RT2500" chipset.

Apparently this chipset is neat because it supports the ability of Win 2000 and above to emulate as a wireless access point (act like a router) and this setup is called SoftAP.

I however am not interested in this SoftAP capability. I just want a wireless card.

The card and drivers and the configuration utility that "runs" the card all install without a hitch on my Win 98 system. The device manager says the driver is good and the device is running properly. The LEDs on the card light up nicely. But when I go to run the wireless configuration utility to tell the card to connect to a signal get a "File Not Found: MPRAPI.DLL"

So I investigate and find out that this DLL is a Win NT/2000/WP DLL that has to do with SoftAP. Well. I think what the heck and download it and drop it in the application folder and run again. This time ACTIVEDS.DLL is Not Found. I find this is also a Win NT/200 DLL that has to do with SoftAP. So I get it and drop it in the app folder too. This time ADSLDPC.DLL (another NT/2000 DLL) is Not Found. When I download this and drop it in the app folder I come to a dead end because the program now complains about one of the libraries having the incorrect call structure.

When I called to upgrade to Imageware 3.0 I was told it was unavailable.
Any suggestions on what to do now?

A:{RESOLVED} Logitech PageScan Color not working Win98

Is that the program that does the actual scanning, or is that the image editing software? The actual scanning pretty much has to be done by the program that they wrote, but image editing and TWAIN acquiring can be done by lots of other programs. When you do a TWAIN acquire it will run the scanning program - so it has to be working.

If your scanner company isn't around anymore or doesn't offer any upgrades... well, there isn't much you can do.

There are some higher end applications, like Corel Draw, that have their own TWAIN source scanning in them, but they don't work with everything. My scanner (cheap Canon) doesn't work with it, for instance.

My video card just recently started malfunctioning. I first noticed when black dots would appear over videos during playback. I shrugged it off, thinking it was nothing big. Eventually I ended up playing Counter-Strike. These are some screenshots of what it looks like in game.

It's also displaying everything else incorrectly as well. There are blue pixels appearing all over the place, on the desktop and in Browser windows and such. I tried re-installing the card many times, but nothing seems to work. I think I might have damaged the card somehow, but I don't know how exactly. I put a cold pack on it for a minute or two when it first started malfunctioning, figuring it might have been overheating.

Here is information about the card from dxdiag.

Name: VisionTek XTASY 9600
Manufacturer: ATI Technologies Inc.
Chip Type: RADEON 9600 Series AGP (0x 4150)
DAC Type: Internal DAC(400MHz)
Approx. Total Memory: 256.0 MB
Current Display Mode: 1024 x 758 (32 bit) (60 Hz)
Monitor: Plug and Play Monitor
I should mention that I have an onboard Video Card as well, and when I hook the monitor up to that everything displays fine. Does anyone have any possible solutions?

1)Intel HD Graphics Driver (Video_Driver_99N14_WN32_10.18.15.4278_A03.EXE)
2)AMD Radeon R5 M240 Driver(Video_Driver_TJ5R3_WN_14.301.1002_A00.EXE)
3)AMD Radeon R7 M265/R7 M270 Driver (Video_Driver_V3RDN_WN_14.301.1002_A00.EXE)
At first i installed all 3 of them.

So the probkems that i had:
1)Windows every second or third time would not boot, after loading screen it would be plain black screen with nothing working.
2)if it loaded to windows screen would very soon start blinking, messages about amd video card  failing would start appearing. and BSOD followed in a fex moments
I figured that the cards might be conflicting, and after disabling intel video card the problems would disappear.
I tried removing all the drivers and after i installed only the hd driver and  r7 270  driver there were no such problems aswell (have to test a little bit more though). However after i try to test video card through windows rating system, it fails with error (Display driver stopped responding and has recovered) and the test does not finish. Also tried starting up dark souls 3. it also did not start and failed with the same error. On my other ... Read more

A:Just upgraded video card but!

Did you uninstall your old graphics card drivers and applications first? Thats the usual cause of the problem you describe.
If not there are several ways to fix this but it'd take a while to explain, so let me know if you think it is the cause and i will help further.

When I built my system a few months ago I had a Celeron G540 and I thought the Intel HD Graphics 1000 was pretty decent. When the i3-2105 was $25 off at Newegg I bought it because it has Intel HD Graphics 3000 and I thought it'd be better. The CPU is much better but the graphics seems to be the same.

My sis saw me leaning forward to read the text and mentioned it. I didn't realize I was doing that but I thought my 17" monitor was too small. It turned out that the text is somewhat blurry so I ordered a Sapphire HD 6670 video card and a Seasonic 550w Bronze because I wasn't sure if my Corsair CX430 will handle more wattage. I'm playing it safe.

Got the stuff today and installed them. Blew me away, good lord! The text is lot easier to see and the video's much better as I can see more detail.

So the Intel HD Graphics is that bad? Jeez.

EDIT: by the way, the resolution is 1280 x 1024.

A:Bought a video card (and upgraded the PSU)

For 2D stuff like what you're talking about, onboard video like that should be more than good enough and clear enough. Blurry text is usually a sign that the monitor is not in its Native Resolution.

Also, the CX430 would have been major overkill for this video card.

A:cant get dvd on win98!!!!

DVD problems

Which software do you have for burning? Win98 usually doesn't have problems installing DVD burning programmes. It should find your dvd burner automatically. Did you look in "device manager" to see what CDROMS are shown? You will have to emable DMA to burn anything but that is found in the CDROM properties.
We need more info to help past this point.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice that can be provided. I want to format my hard drive on a PC using Win 98. I have some files I would like to save before I do this. I have a second machine that is provided by my employer for dialing into work and working on the network that uses Win NT. Both machines have Network cards and are connected to each other with the phone looking like cable. The NT machine already has network set ups for my employers network, such as I see the work domain this machine connects to in network properties.

I just want to connect the two, copy the files I want to keep onto the NT machine, rebuild the 98 machine and restore the files. I have spent hours trying to find help and haven't found anything about networking NT to 98. Any Tips on how to do this or where to look? What if any other information can I provide to help get accurate advice?

I have 1 NIC to DSL modem, 1 NIC to LAN/switch, and 1 to another PC with cross-over cable.

I have them installed now, and my network in control panel shows they all have TCP/IP attached to them, but when I WINIPCFG only 4 adapters show up:
PPP Adapter
D-Link DFE-530TX
PPPoE Adapter
DEC 21041

The 1 missing is my LinkSys adpater. It shows correctly in my network config, and it shows no system conflicts.

The LinkSys is the one connected to my cross-over cable, so I can do everything except see my other PC that's connected through the LinkSys adapter.

I do not wish to buy a swicth or router, I just want to if this configuration is possible, and how to make it work.
