Dell Latitude E6420 screen flickers with charger plugged in?

Q: Dell Latitude E6420 screen flickers with charger plugged in?

I just bought this laptop the other day refurbished from NewEgg, it was supposed to be a basic setup ( No DVD-R/W, BlueTooth, nVidia Graphics, Camera, Fax, the better resolution screen, etc). But lucky me they sent me one with all those features for the price of the basic model, my point being I REALLY don't want to send it back for a replacement so please try not to suggest it.
When I first got it I checked the battery and charger to see if it was Dell brand but unfortunately they were replacements like I expected (but the charger is the right voltage). My problem is when I plugged it up to the charger to activate Windows and install updates, after which I started to turn down the brightness from the Fn / arrow keys and when I got to a certain level of brightness the screen went black, after unplugging it and a restart I plugged it in again and it did the same thing again without me touching anything. So for a couple days I just didn't use it while it was charging.
Today I decided to update the BIO's to the latest version incase that was the problem (from A5 to A21 or something like that) and that requires the charger to be connected so I did which gave me the same result, only this time I realized the screen wasn't off it was the backlight that was off. So having to use a flashlight to see the screen I updated the BIO's and while it was updating the screen was visible again but after it restarted the screen still stayed on but was flickering (only with the charger plugged in).
I've tried adjusting the settings in the BIO's like I read somewhere to set the battery to default before doing the update but no change, haven't tried it after as I have it charging currently. Earlier I took the bottom cover off to check it out before any of this because the charging port on the laptop wiggled a bit (the whole thing not just the prong) and I found that the bracket which holds down the port was loose and tried tightening the screw but its down as far as it can go.
So my suspicions are either I need a certain driver update, the charging port was possibly replaced with a *** one, or the charger is just cheap Chinese junk but other than that everything looks appears like it did when it was new. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing this?, I can take it apart and replace things myself.
It does have the nVidia NVS 200M if that helps
Any ideas?, Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Dell Latitude E6420 screen flickers with charger plugged in?

Good day ,
Here in this situation the issue is prominent when the charger is connected .
Try working on the system with only battery connected to see if the issue is seen only when the charger is connected then its faulty charger issue.
I would suggest you to test the system's display in safe mode with networking as safe mode uses very minimal graphics .
Else update the video drivers on this system to do so go to support site .
Kindly confirm the video card installed on your system is NVS 4200M if it is then you can install the same by clicking on this link .
Also check if the issue is seen on an external monitor with and without the charger connected (This is done to confirm if the system board is working fine ) and initiate the LCD BIST (Buit in self test ) on the system by pressing the D-KEY while turning on the system (if solid colours are seen on the screen along with flickering then its a faulty screen ).
I would request you to try these steps on the system with and without charger .
Hoping to hear from you soon .
Kindest Regards ,

There are many red/pink dot on my screen. You can see it like below. It really annoying when you have video call. If anyone know what is the problem please let me know. Thank you

A:My Dell Latitude E6420 screen problem

I do not see them in the screenshot. Because of that, I believe this is more than likely dead or stuck pixels on the LCD. Contact Dell if you are under warranty and have your LCD replaced. If you are not under warranty and want to resolve the issue you can find an LCD from either Amazon.com or partspeople.com

A:DELL E6420 screen blinks when plugged in or off the charjer

Is there any damage / liquid spillage on the system? When did the issue start?
Are you using an original Dell OEM Adapter? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Could you test with another power adapter if possible?
Update the BIOS - restart and check.
Enable the built in admin account and check.
Connect an external monitor and check if the screen flickers on both the displays when the power adapter is connected / disconnected.
Lastly, try reinstalling the video drivers from vendor site Intel.com or nvidia.com as applicable.

hello i have both these laptops well i have bought a e6420 for my girlfriend as the other one she has is crap.well i have read that these e6420 get warm and well i found out they come with one pipe heatsink well i heard u can upgrade the heatsink to a 2 pipe one.(DUAL HEATPIPE heatsink DELL P/N - TYP01) i was wondering what else do i need to do this as when i get this laptop its second hand i7 pro in it 2.8ghz im going to clean it out and put new paste on it put i hear people are on about this copper shim to put on it.can this be done and well can i upgrade my dell latitude e6430 i5 pro 2.6ghz heatsink with the double heatsink as i know that one only comes with one pipe.love you guys info if you guys can help me would be class thanks

i got this info here GPU Temperature 103C on Latitude E6420 - General Hardware - Laptop - Dell Community

A:Dell latitude e6430 and dell latitude e6420

Joseph mate best leave as is after all it was made to function as it came. Now for the compound and copper shim personally I would not bother with the copper shim I can see no good reason for it the dual pipe again if it was made to work with one pipe then leave alone.

It is better if you renew the compound using a decent cleaner and compound and I can recommend these for that job

Arctic Silver Incorporated - ArctiClean for thorough cleaning and preparation and Arctic Silver Incorporated - Arctic Silver 5 for the compound.

Now it depends on who you listen to but I always use these products and after the old compound is thoroughly cleaned off and the surfaces prepped I spread the compound very thinly and across the both entire surface of the CPU and the heatsink with my finger inside a vinyl or latex glove and then place a rice grain sized piece of compound on the CPU and replace the heatsink. If you touch the surfaces after clean and prep then redo it.

While you are in there do make sure the fan and the radiator are really spotless and I sometimes relube the fan bearings to make sure the fan is running at full tilt when needed.

So I have a Dell Latitude E6420 with the following specs :16 GB RAM
i7 2720QM @2.2-3 GHz
Nvidia Quadro NVS 4200m
According to Nvidia control panel, I have a total of 2.5 GB of graphics memory / video memory (vram).
My question is, is it possible to somehow modify the amount of dedicated memory as there's only .5 gb of dedicated vram which cannot run games. Although some benchmarks show it can run some graphical games like Grand Theft Auto V at 53 fps, I want to know how to increase the vram as they have done these benchmarks with 1 gb of Vram which I cant even reach. Im aiming to atleast go for 2 GB if I could and then overclock the card a bit.Thanks.

A:Dell Latitude E6420 VRAM

No - there is no way to manually alter the VRAM settings.

I bought Dell Latitude E6420 few months ago.
It had a severe problem of freezing (I believe it was due to too much CPU Usage since I upgraded to Windows 10 and was using chrome), and I wasn't even able to move my mouse. It happened frequently and it never unfroze
Now what's happening is that it freezes when I'm not even working on anything, and while I am able to move my mouse, nothing really happens. I press windows button yet the windows tab doesn't come out. I can't access to folders or anything.
I thought it may have been SSD problem so I bought another one, but the screws are stripped and I'm not sure how to unscrew them without damaging anything.
Any guess on what's going on and what I can do to fix my computer?

A:Dell Latitude E6420 Freezing

Hello and good afternoon
Considering that you purchased it used it is hard to determine what, if any, hardware has issues. Have you ran Diagnostics?
It is doubtful that everything will pass with your issue so write down the error codes, if any, and post them.
Another option is to restart and when you get the "splash screen" begin tapping the F8 key and your display will offer several options. Arrow down and Chose "Last Known Good" then push the Enter Key and see what happens. Last known good resets the system to when all of the settings worked.
The screws just hold a cover for the SSD so you will not damage it if you are careful. Perhaps you should reinstall the other SSD and then run Diagnostics.
The aforementioned suggestions are a "stab in the dark." However, we never know.

hi everyone,

i've buyed a laptop from internet, a Dell latitude E6420

Intel i5 2520M 3,2Ghz
320GB HDD 7200rpm

I installed a fresh copy off Windows 10 64-bit and did all updates and runs fine.
When i plugged my mouse in a usb port Windows detects it but then it freezes the whole laptop.
it power off and restart.

when i did a dell diagnostic test it says ''HDD long self test unsuccessful''
i retry it, and...again same error..
errorcode is 2000-0142

i test this hard drive with crystaldiskinfo no errors!

but system freezes as well..

Verry strange

What can i do?

A:Dell latitude e6420 FREEZES

The error code 2000-0142 means there's a issue with the hard drive, and most likely needs to be replace with a new one.

My laptop will not boot into anything, diagnostics, boot options, bios, regular boot. It turns on perfectly fine jus does not boot or let let me boot into anything else. It says i selected the options, but it jus freezes n stays that way. Ive done everything to try n fix it, been to many posts trying peoples suggestions, nothin works. I think its the motherboard or cpu. i have no idea how to fix it n get around it. I think my only solution is to purchase a new motherboard. Lemme know what you think, thanks.

A:Dell Latitude E6420 Wont Boot Into Anything

If you can a boot menu to display, I seriously doubt that the motherboard or CPU are the problem.  Can you boot from a properly prepped USB flash drive?  Do you know how to create one?  I can't remember for certain on the E6420, but I believe the Diagnostics option relies on the Diagnostics partition existing on the hard drive, so if you're only trying to boot that and the hard drive, failures in both of those cases could be explained by a dead hard drive.

RAM speed depends on the CPU installed.  If this is an i5-2520m or other i5 from that generation, the memory controller aboard the CPU can't run RAM at 1600 MHz.

Hi guys I am having an issue with my laptop. It was updated using dell drivers and apps that match the service tag and everything was working smoothly until I rebooted today and now a password is requested on the bios screen before I can go any further. I don't have a password on my OS or my bios but this Dell secure manager must have chosen a default one on my behalf. Now I can't get into anything, it won't boot to CD drive or usb it just stays on this bios password screen. I tried nearly everything I could think of. I removed the cmos battery. Tried various possible default passwords and nothing. I don't really want to try shorting the nvram chip, too much could go wrong with powering up a disassembled laptop and even then it might not work. Any help at all would really be appreciated.

A:Latitude E6420 DELL secure manager

Ok update for anyone interested. I was unable to source any help for this and conversations with Dell where non productive. The only safe option I had was to replace the motherboard. So in respect of this option I decided there was nothing to lose in attempting to reset the nvram chip.
The most irritating part is disassembly in the hope that you will detect the chip before complete disassembly is achieved. I found the chips where placed conveniently under the keyboard and are easily accessible. There are 2 x 8 pin winbond chips side by side 25Q16CVsig and 25Q64CVSIG, the one I concentrated on was the 8MB chip 25Q64CVSIG. If you look up the datasheet for the component you will see pins 5 and 6 are signals CLK and Serial Data In, these are the 2 pins we need to short. If you are unsure which pin is which, if you look at the chip you will see a circular impression on the chip face, this is indicating pin1 and the numbers increment in an anti clockwise motion.
First thing I did was reconnect drives and anything that you way have disconnected and then I tested a normal boot to make sure everything was connected correctly and you will notice the Dell secure manager is still appearing. Now reboot and whilst rebooting connect a small wire or loose piece of solder between these 2 pins and the PC should boot up bypassing this password request allowing you to boot into the OS. Delighted this worked first try I wanted to make sure it did not happen again so I opened up dell secure m... Read more

Hello everyone, I bought a dell laptop from Ebay a few weeks ago as I really wanted one but during the first week I replaced the thermal compound as their was almost none left. When I put the computer back together I got a processor error code, I checked to make sure everything was in place and indeed it was but after a few restarts the computer actually booted to my os with no issues, the computer ran perfectly fine till I shut it down and attempted to power the system on again, the same error was occurring so when I pressed the power button to shut the computer down it restarted ad booted to the os just fine. It still functions fine as I'm typing on it right now but the problem still on occasion persists.
Any help would be appreciated as I need this laptop in good working order for image processing.

There are two possibilities:  the less probable is that the CPU is bad.  More likely it's the system board that's bad.  Did you get any kind of warranty on the system?

I always put my laptop on standby and turn it off only when required. Today 4 hours after I left it on standby, I could wake him up from standby but could not see anything on screen which worked and all operating system sounds could be heard, hard drive worked as well. I tried powering it off and on, entering BIOS but I still could not see display. Here's a link to YouTube video that portrays what I see:

I later saw information here on how to access ePSA testing environment so I followed the steps: removed battery, plugged off power supply, pressed Power Button for 1 minute to drain power, held Fn key and powered laptop on until I heard funny sounds. This was ePSA probably but I still could not see anything on screen:

If I am not mistaken, my laptop was running on dedicated nVidia graphics card. What should I do now? Luckily I have customer on-site warranty still valid, but I am looking for a faster way to solve problem. Who knows, but it may be a mere problem of cable got lose which is in my abilities to fix. Thanks.

A:DELL Latitude E6420 Does No Longer Show Display

Hi Boris_yo,
I would suggest you to connect an external monitor with the system and check if you are able to get proper display on external monitor.
Here are the steps:

Shut down the system.
Connect the external monitor with the Blue VGA connector (VGA cable/connector is the normal cable that connects the monitor to the desktop system).
Restart the system and power on the external monitor, press the Fn key and hold it down and while holding it down, press the F8 key this would switch the display to the external monitor.
Check if you are getting the display on the external monitor.

Please share if you have received any error codes or beep codes when you power on the computer.
Please run the LCD built in self-test. Here are the steps:

To run the LCD BIST (Built in Self-test) Press and hold the D key on the keyboard while pressing the power button, then release both at the same time.
This will initiate a grey screen, then Red, then Blue, then Green then White, to allow you to inspect the entire LCD for color purity on each screen and to better identify defect such as cracks in the LCD or stuck pixels that may not be apparent in a normal viewing mode.

Please share the findings.
Awaiting your response.

Hello Dell community!
Yesterday I did a motherboard swap in my E6420 from the Intel HD board to the Nvidia board.
Everything seems to be working fine, except the internal speakers won't work in the OS.
I booted into the built in diagnostics, tested the audio, and it played the tones of audio through the speakers.
I have a suspicion that because I did the Motherboard swap, I can no longer use the old IO board due to it being a different size, the audio device may be on that as it has the headphone jack.
Also, I know it uses a different sound device, but the HDMI audio works just fine.
Any help would be appreciated!

My Latitude was 100% password free up to 5 minutes ago.  The hard drive is new, and I did a clean reinstall of Windows 10.  After a successful update of the Broadcom USH firmware via DOS, the computer has now locked me out.

The message is "Dell Secure Manager" - This computer system, <service tag>-6FF1, is protected by a security authentication system.  You cannot access the data on this computer without the correct password.  Please type in the system or administrator password.

I have windows 10 installed on my laptop
This is not a problem I have had before
I have to shine a flashlight at my computer screen in order to see anything. When I open the display settings, it says my brightness is already at 100%, and nothing changes when I drag the slider, or when I plug it in. The brightness won't change when using the Fn key either. I tried disabling and re-enabling the display adapter and that didn't work either. I have also tried restarting my computer but again nothing changed. I don't know what could have caused this to happen; I've had this computer for a year and have never experienced this.
Any help to fix this problem would be appreciated!

I recently updated the Intel HD Graphics driver to the latest version, but now it flickers every time I want to plug in my charger or take it out. It's really annoying and I'm not sure why this just started happening. Shouldn't new drivers help your system?
Please help.

Were you having issues? Why did you update? If you were not having issues, there would be no advantage to updating. Try rolling back the drivers. Windows key + Pause Break

recently bought a Dell latitude E6420 i5-2520M 8GB and I am experiencing a very annoying issue with the speakers.
The sound coming from the speakers worked until I plugged in the headphones jack into the computer for the first time - when I unplugged the headphones internal speakers stop to work completely.
What I have tried so far with no success:

Uninstall and reinstall windows audio/sound drivers
Tried Realtek drivers
Disabled headphones
Recovery and reinstall Windows 10

What is strange is that every time I uninstall and reinstall the sound drivers the speakers start to work again until i plug the jack of the headphones and again speakers stop to work. Any Idea?
Please let me know what you need to know about my computer to better understand the problem and I will amend the question accordingly.

A:Dell latitude E6420 - plug headphone jack in stop internal speakers to work

I resolved installing windows native audio drivers
Apparently, this is a known issue with the Realtek drivers on the Dell Latitude.

HI DELL Support
I have a DELL E6420 with a faulty LED screen (WLED 1366 x 768). I notice that the E6420 also has an anti-glare  HD+ screen option (1600 x 900). Can I replace my faulty screen with the higher resolution screen?

Yes, assuming you get a screen known to be compatible with the system (don't just buy any screen - notebooks work only with those screens they ship with from the factory!)

Hi, I bought this Ideapad 100s in April and have just recently started using it.  It works well when it is plugged in, but I can't use it when it is unplugged.  Every time it is switched on without the power, the screen flickers off and on, as though there is a loose connection between the main part of the computer and the monitor. Is it possible this could be something to do with power settings - since it only happens when it is unplugged - or does it sound like my computer is faulty? Thanks for any help you can provide.

9 days ago I was given an E6420 that was quite healthy but protected by bitlocker and I had no password.  Since then I've tried every trick to recover and all have failed.  The BIOS is locked so I could not change any settings, not even the date.  On boot up the system asked for a password before letting windows 7 run.
I figured if I formatted the HD and started over all would be OK, and after a great deal of difficulty, I did that on another computer.  But bitlocker was still there.
I looked for ways to "zeroize" or reset the BIOS and failed.  I disconnected the big and coin batteries and shorted the terminals overnight and started again.  Nothing changed.  I took an ohmeter and touched it to the battery terminals with the battery removed to force a reset.  That changed things.  Now, when I boot it, the screen is black and two LEDs flash.  I cannot find anyplace to decrypt the flashing LED error signal on start up, white battery and wireless LEDs flashing.
It now acts like an uncoordinated collection of wires and chips.  I meant to make it forget it had bitlocker protection but went far beyond.
I'd love to read any suggestions.  The dell site has not been helpful at all, unlike every other Dell I've worked on.
