X1 Carbon 3rd gen: Touchpad/trackpoint 'bricked'?

Q: X1 Carbon 3rd gen: Touchpad/trackpoint 'bricked'?

So, i'm fairly confident that my touchpad/trackpoint is 'bricked' on my X1 Carbon 3rd gen. I don't know what have triggered it but i haven't been able to make any progress in getting it to work in the last 5 hours. 1. There is no response on the trackpointer, the touchpad or its buttons2. Windows doesn't see any mouse-devices under Device Manager3. Uninstalling "Synaptic Pointing Device" results in a yellow generic PS/2 device, but still no mouse4. Bios is newest version N14ET51W (1.29) and i've done a Reset Default Settings5. Both trackpoint and touchpad is enabled in the BIOS6. Running hardware scans using Lenovo Solution Center doesn't yield any errors7. Using TouchPad-Flash Utility - TrackPointDetect yields 20 warnings and 2 errors.8. I've dissambled my laptop touchpad and keyboard connectors and making sure they are firmly connected.9. Is there something i have missed? Anyways. I've made peace with having to replace some parts - nothing lasts forever and i've had my laptop for 4 years now. The million dollar question is though; what to replace?Without knowing the inner workings of the X1 Carbon i can't get my head around how the touchpad an keyboard interacts. On other models its a single component and you replace both keyboard and touchpad together. Do i need to do that on X1 Carbon as well even though its two seperate components?

Preferred Solution: X1 Carbon 3rd gen: Touchpad/trackpoint 'bricked'?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I found a replacement part for the whole top cover, keyboard and touchpad. Is this the replacement you would all recommend?

Hello,I have an issue whith my new X1 Carbon (G7), that my touchpad does not react immediately when I click with the phisical touchpad buttons (ie. the buttons above the touchpad). It is noticable when trying to drag&drop an item, or when trying to use the scrollbar similarly (clicking and dragging). It works well when I use the lower area of the touchpad to "click". For example: I select a file in File Explorer with a click and immediately move my fingers on the touchpad to drag it somewhere else, but it only starts to move after a short moment. It feels like the touchpad does not want to react, but then it suddenly starts to work... I thought of driver update, but Synaptics driver is not available. Maybe it's an issue with the Microsoft drivers?Does anyone else have a similar issue? Thanks

Recently got a new Carbon x1, and everything was working fine, but once I closed the laptop and when I woke it up neither TrackPoint nor touchpad was working. Reboots didn't help. Tried installing Synaptics drivers - it said there was no device for update. Device manager detects the touchpad as Microsoft mouse with corresponding drivers (screenshot attached).  Also tried installing update for TrackPoint from the drivers list, it said it needed a reboot to install, after reboot there was an error window that suggested trying once again, several times I saw this message.Anyone have this? Are there any possible solutions?(Searched on the forum, but the solutions were not for my case or didn't work)P.S. It would be kinda stupid for a $1500 laptop not to work because of a touchpad

So, during the windows installer, no mouse. I couldn't see the pointer, neither the touchpad or trackpoint worked. I managed through using the keyboard, then once I got to the desktop I installed the "Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav Driver for Windows 10 (64-bit) - ThinkPad" driver and rebooted. Still not working. I installed the thinkvantage system update, it detects no updates. I installed the service bridge. No updates. I then made a linux live USB that I use to install manjaro on all my laptops, yes everything worked out of the box on my previous x1 carbon. Touchpad doesn't work, xorg doesn't even recognize any touchpad present. Anyone else have this? Any solutions? This is actually my 2nd X1 carbon; the first works well but the mouse buttons are loose so Lenovo promised waived restocking and shipping with the purchase of a new order of equal or greater value; I ordered another one with plans to return the first one, because I really needed to keep it for work while I waited for the new one. The new one is actually flawless in terms of build, mouse buttons are solid, the CMOS battery is not loose and producing a rattling noise as it is in the first one, and the bottom cover doesn't have the clicking noise that so many are afflicted with. Really I'm willing to try anything to fix the touchpad.

GreetingsFirst time posting seeing if anyone else is having issues with the X1 Carbon trackpoint/touchpad freezing up on Windows 8.For me it is freezing up every 20min while I am using it, and also when I unplug the AC power. The mouse will freeze up but the keyboard works fine. Usually I am forced to reboot.A USB mouse will work fine during this freeze. I have tried installing all windows updates, Lenovo updates and even system recovery to a date when I didn't have issues but nothing seems to work. Anyone else have this issue? Its been very frustrating owning this x1, as I am on my second one after the first one died on me.

A:X1 Carbon trackpoint/touchpad freezing

Hi, changuri

I would recommend trying to install the Synaptics base driver and see if that helps your issues. Synaptics is the company that produces the UltraNav driver for Lenovo, so there should not be any loss of functionality, but it tends to fix issues like this in my experience. This driver can be found here. Try downloading and installing that and see if it helps.

Best of luck,
Adam

I've noticed that the touchpad is unresponsive for a short period of time (~0.3s) after trackpoint button clicks (or joystick use) on my latest X1 Carbon. This makes it a pain to use the touchpad with the physical trackpoint buttons, which I would do regularly (e.g. for drag&drop). The behavior can be observed both under Windows and Linux (tested with Ubuntu 19.10), however, not in the BIOS when using the graphical interface. Is this a known issue? Can anything be done about it?

Hello, I bought a brand new X1 Carbon 20Q model and it seems at even after running all the think vantage updates, there is the Ultranav option missing in the mouse options. I want to configure the touchpad settings individually (e.g. switch primary and secondary buttons only for the touchpad but not for the USB mouse). Also right click by double clicking on the trackpoint is not working at the moment. In short, I miss all the options usually provided in thinkpad models. I tried everything, please help if you can. The drivers listed on the lenovo page seem not to work. I installed the newest touchpad driver, yet in the device manager it still shows the MS driver from 2006... Thank you!

I recently bought a refurbished Carbon X1. The trackpoint and the touchpad top buttons don't work. The touchpad and bottom button do work. Touchscreen does work. So far, everything else has been okay. The "Enable Trackpoint" checkbox is greyed out in Control Panel / Hardware / Mouse / Thinkpad tab. After searching forums and web, I have tried the following, none of which have worked:- update all drivers - ensure windows 7 updates are up to date- uninstall lenovo driver and install synaptics driver (didn't work)  then reinstall lenovo driver (didn't work)- disable and enable trackpoint in BIOS (with reboots in between)- reset, power off, and reset via the hole in the base No luck so far. Any assistance greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I am trying to find a way that the touch pad and trackpoint will disable when I connect an external mouse.  Other computers I've used have a setting for this, but I can not find one the Carbon X1. I don't want to disable them permanently (or at least not both of them) for those few times I'm not using an external mouse. My preference would be to disable one permanently, and the other only when an external mouse is present. Thanks

Dear all, I'm having trouble with both my touchpad&trackpoint not working properly. I am not sure whether there's something to do about my hardware or not, but all things started to mess up. I have been experiencing the issue that sometimes my touchpad and trackpoint didn't work. At first I solved it through disabling driver signature enforcement, but later on both the touchpad and trackpoint lost its function after I hibernate/sleep. I have to restart the system and select that advanced boot option again to use them. I don't know the exact time the issue started to deepen, but, I'm guessing that it's about the touchpad firmware update. I installed it someday and after rebooting the program told me that the attempt to update is failed. And after that the touchpad&trackpoint became completely unusable. Both the device can be seen in the device manager but they just lost their functions. I have a recently purchased X1 Extreme, with fully updated system (according to Lenovo System Update) and running Windows 10 v. 1903.  Following some lost functionality / freeze-up of the mouse pointer, I first tried deleting the Synaptics Trackpoint in Device Manager, then rebooting. This "fix" worked, but the problem repeated itself.  So I followed the usual path - look for newer drivers in Lenovo Support.  So I looked at the X1E Drivers & Software page and downloaded the TrackPoint Firmware Update Utility from:https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n20g902w.exe Running this program gave me the following error (screenshot should (?) be attached):"Fail to enter Transparent mode" And now the TrackPoint & TrackPad do not work at all.  I am using an external USB mouse ... with my ultraportable laptop.   I searched and searched online, of course, and found a solution seems to have been found for the same problem on the X1 Carbon 6th Generation.  The solution involves downloading the SYNAPTICS Touchpad Firmware from the Lenovo site at:https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/LAPTOPS-AND-NETBOOKS/THINKPAD-X-SERIES-LAPTOPS/THINKPAD-... But ... no such update for the X1 Extreme.   HELP...!!! I have a new X1 Carbon 6th generation. I have noticed that intermittently, the cursor will start drifting around the screen and the trackpad becomes unresponsive. I believe that this is the trackpoint making the cursor move. It lasts between 2-10 seconds and is very frustrating as I can't continue my work. I have tried disabling the trackpoint but I like using the top mouse buttons which get disabled as well with this settting. I have tried reinstalling the input drivers, no luck.Any suggestions? I think most users know that TrackPoint has an auto-correction mechanism to avoid permanent physical tilt. That is, when TrackPoint is pushed towards a direction with constant force for several seconds, that direction will be corrected as "zero-point". Therefore you'll observe a counter-movement when releasing TrackPoint. What I want to mention is that, back on X220, if you press middle-button when pushing TrackPoint, the above mechanism will never be triggered regardless of how long or how hard you push. This is a correct and thoughtful design, because when middle-button is pressed, such tilt should be user-generated rather than permanent physical. However, on X1 Carbon (3rd gen), the auto-correction mechanism will be triggered even when middle-button is pressed. This is NOT a correct behaviour.I guess such behaviour is coded in Synaptics driver.  If so, please kindly contact them to correct this behaviour. Thanks.

I just start using X1 Carbon Gen 2 and find that the Trackpoint is way too slow.  I have used Trackpoint for more than 10 years in various models of Thinkpad and get use to Trackpoint.  Every model of Thinkpad that I used, the default setting of Trackpoint which is in the middle, is too slow but after adjust to fastest, it work fine.  However, for this X1 Cargon Gen 2, it is still too slow after adjusting the speed to fastest. I have updated the device driver few days ago, it does not help. Any suggestion?

A:Trackpoint "too slow" proglem of X1 Carbon Gen 2

Same problem on the x240.  I set the trackpoint speed to max, mouse speed to max, and turned off the "enhance cursor precision" option (which also slows the cursor), and still feel like I'm effortfully pushing the cursor around the screen with the trackpoint.  It's completely unacceptable and basically ruins the trackpoint for me.  Last night I got on my old x201 and it was like a breath of fresh air... just tap the trackpoint and it immediately goes where I want.  The constant pressure on the trackpoint of my x240 is also making it lose it's inertia settings so that it frequently just drifts uncontrollably up or down the screen. Perhaps there's a registry setting to increase it's sensitivity? It's just terrible what they did to the trackpoint on this generation.  I can partially live with the virtual buttons, but the loss of sensitivity and the removal of the press-to-select function of the trackpoint are terribly dissapointing in the new X series.  They should take the red-dot off of the lenovo marketing.

The TrackPoint input (pointer and buttons) stopped working recently. Touchpad does still work. Both are on in OS and in the BIOS. I think it happened with the latest BIOS update to 1.11, but I was using a mouse at the time, only noticed later that day. Reinstalling the Trackpoint driver didn't solve the issue (to the contrary, first time I tried, that took out the keyboard, but reinstalling some of the chipset drivers solved that.) Right now when I use the trackpoint the touchpad is disabled while moving the cursor. The touchpad is also disabled when the trackpoint recalibrates itself. This causes problems because I often let go of the trackpoint to do gestures on the touchpad, and sometimes I then have to wait for the trackpoint to recalibrate until I can do anything. Recalibration can take several seconds so sometimes it's really frustrating.  Is my trackpoint working as it should or am I the only one experiencing recalibration for more than 2 seconds? Is there a known way to enable touchpad and trackpoint at the same time on Windows 10? That would solve my problem since I don't care about the drifting, I just want to be able to use the touchpad while it recalibrates.

So this is the second time I am experienceing a problem with my x1 trackpoint and with the debacle of shipping that happened last time, I don't want to have to go through this again. I have sent my unit into lenovo for the same problem about 2 months ago.  the problem is similar to the one outlined here (https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-erratic-trackpoint-Synaptics-19-3-4-99/td-...). the mouse finds a home in the bottom-left or top right corner.   However, I perfer the touchpad to the pointing stick, so this probably is not be a hardware problem (or it is and it's just faulty hardware from the start).   All I literally want to do is disable the trackpoint pointing stick.  but when I do, it disables clicking so that's not an option.   I really can't afford to go another 2 months without my laptop again.  not now.    Edit: I goofed my lefts and rights

When moving the mouser cursor with the trackpad, pressing or releasing any of the three TrackPoint buttons will randomly makes the trackpad unresponsive 50% of the time. The cursor will eventually resume movement if you keep moving your finger. This makes clicking and dragging fail most of the time. This does NOT apply to:1. Moving the cursor with the trackpad and pressing the lower-left or lower-right trackpad buttons instead of the trackpoint buttons.2. Moving the cursor with the trackpoint nub and pressing the trackpad or trackpoint buttons. To reieterate the problem is exclusively when using the trackpoint buttons WHILE dragging on the trackpad. I'm using Windows 10 Pro with the latest Synaptics firmware installed (n2hgc06w.exe installed firmware pr3013337-tm-p3467-010.img) and the latest Elan driver installed (n2hg404w.exe). This is on a brand new X1 Carbon Gen 7 I received yesterday (model 20R1S04100) with all BIOS updates applied. This *exact* same behavior happens with Ubuntu 19.10 so clearly it is not a Windows 10 or Windows driver issue, but a firmware one.Are there any solutions? It really does make the trackpad unusable...

Hi guys, I recently got hold of my new X1 carbon and decided to do a thorough firmware update with vantage. When the trackpoint utility firmware 1.0.0.3 was installed, my laptop flashed with an installation failure notice and rebooted. After that, the trackpoint as well as the mouse above the touchpad no longer worked. I tried the advanced setting in control panel, but the entire trackpoint configuration option was blacked out. Does anybody experience similar issues with this update and have any suggestions on how to do a home fix for this? I have been making do with the touchpad and a bluetooth mouse, but it does not feel very "thinkpad" this way.....

A:Trackpoint stopped working on X1 Carbon 6th Gen after firmware 1.0.0.3 Update

Hello and welcome,

This sounds like the issue sorted in the below linked post.

Thought this was resolved some time ago.  Please report back if it helps - or doesn't.

I have a user that has a 2nd Generation X1 Carbon (the type with virtual buttons on the Synaptics TrackPoint/TrackPad.   The user is complaining that a context sensitivie menu (of the type that a right click would initiate) intermittently is shown when she left clicks.  She normaly uses the TrackPad but does use the TrackPoint on ocassion.  Here's what I've done so far: 1) I initially thought it was the TrackPad and had Lenovo Support replace it.  The problem was reduced but is still occurs. 2) I've installed current UltraNav drivers and updated all other drivers to current levels.  The WIndows 10 is also updated to current patches.  I would try setting the UltraNave to "Click Anywhere" but that disables the TrackPoint feature that is ocassionally used.  Has anyone seen this happen before and know a fix for this?

Hi, I'm long time X / ThinkPad user and I have few issues that are making me crazy.1) I'm mostly using TrackPoint. It happens quite few times in some hours that mouse starts to slide to diagonal position. I can stop this by either having computer go to sleep or trying to move mouse on mousepad for 10-20 seconds until computer figures out that I'm on omusepad. Today it happened 3 or 4 times in an hour2) When I'm moving mouse with TrackPoint and stop it somewhere (for example on button) I often need to click a few times until mouse click is detected (using TrackPoint buttons)3) When I am using MousePad and I move fingers slow it moves in a shaking way or sometimes does not detect my finger movement4) It has always worked that when I was using MousePad (for example T460s) when I was sliding with one finger from point A to point B and then pressed with second finger it triggered Right Click. Now I need to slide from point A to B with one finger, remove finger from MousePad and tap with two fingers All the drivers are up to date and all windows updates are installed as-well.

Hey! I'm quite happy with my new P1 2nd Gen, except the pointing devices suck. Lenovo seems to have switched the TrackPoint to ALPS which comes very stiff, choppy and inaccurate. I played around with udev rules and acceleration settings which made it a bit better, but it is still far from the awesome accuracy and smoothness of the W540, my last machine. Same with the three buttons on top of the TrackPad - especially the left one doesn't react reliably when hit on the lower right corner. I have to press a second time every ten clicks or so. This definitely sucks, so my question is: Is anyone aware of other manufacturers/options of especially TrackPoints and TouchPad-buttons for the P1 apart from ALPS? BestMarkus

Hi! I have an E460 laptop, on which I'm dual booting Windows 10 Pro and Manjaro Linux (basically Arch Linux) with Linux kernel 4.5.2. Having the same problem that people discuss in the E460 Keys repeating when pressed for 3 seconds thread, I have been bumping my bios to 1.13, 1.16, and yesterday, to bios 1.17, to see if the problem had been resolved. With the 1.17 bios update, my touchpad and trackpoint stopped working in Linux (In Windows they work fine). They do not even show up in /dev/input, and there is no mention of either of them in dmesg, journalctl, /var/log/Xorg.0.log, or anywhere. The touchpad and stick worked fine in bios 1.13 and 1.16, so I'm thinking there is some regression in 1.17. Is anyone else experiencing this? Can Lenovo confirm whether there is a problem?

Good Day!I'm from the Philippines and I bought a refurbished thinkpad p50 from the US at 2016 and I extended its NBD warranty until June 1, 2018. The touchpad and trackpad suddenly stopped working a few weeks ago and it seems that the bios can't recognize them. The wifi reception seems to have also weaken, requiring me to be closer to the wifi source than before. I also tried reinstalling the drivers but it can't still identify the two pointing device. I'm actually planning to ship it to the US this week before my NBD warranty expires, but I don't know anyone from the US right now to avail the NBD service. May I know which address must I send it to, and the proper procedures to avail the repairs?I already spent $170 for the warranty extension last year, and I'll be spending another $100 for the DHL shipping to the US. May I also know if Lenovo will answer the shipping back to my country, since if not, I'll be spending another $100 for it to be shipped back to the Philippines?I also tried calling the service center from the US but I kept on having long calls with no response. Thanks!

since i've gotten my x201 i've been pretty happy with it. the only problem i've had with it is scrolling. on some applications such as itunes and AIM the program doesn't scroll. i've read a few entries saying that i have to modify the tp4table.dat file and it does work.my question is why is this necessary when other laptops don't need to do this. is this because synaptics drivers do not support scrolling in those applications yet? also how often does lenovo release new drivers to update support for more programs

A:scrolling problem with touchpad/trackpoint

Hello keviinf, modify the tp4table.dat file is the one way, updating the ultra nav drivers could help also. Please reboot your system after editing the tp4table.dat file.Otherwise it won´t work.I did some tweaks on my both systems too. Like enabling horizontal scrolling in Firefox.

Hi all Can anyone help me diagnose a problem I'm having with a friends T410. The trackpoint and touchpad buttons have stopped working (both left and right click). I am forced to use the laptop with an external mouse. The trackpad and touchpoint themselves both work just can't click anything, I have tried uninstalling drivers and re-installing but that hasn't helped, have also run Hirens boot cd - Mini XP mode and the buttons don't work there either. Sounds like a hardware issue to me but would like a second opinion before I start pulling it apart! Many thanks Chris

A:Touchpad and Trackpoint buttons not working

Hi whitehouse87,
Welcome to Lenovo Community! And happy to have you again.

As I understand that you are facing issue with Touchpad & Trackpoint buttons are not working in T410.
You have tried almost everything & I don't think so its related to software or drivers. You can check without drivers once whether clicks are working or not. Else its a hardware issue for sure

I hope the above information helped you.
Please feel free to post in Lenovo Community Forums if you have any further queries!

My touchpad and trackpoint disables after short usage. Max working time is about an hour, typically much less. Sometimes the keyboard has some delay but usually it works fine. The touchscreen works always. Occastinally the pointers come back for a while. So far I have tried:- Updated everything possible from Lenovo support page- Updated BIOS- Removed Synaptics driver 19.3.4.202. It reinstalled automatically.- Uninstalled every software I could- Disabled startup programs- Compared processes, memory and CPU from task manager when workin and during the issue- Reinstalled Windows- Checked that a bluetooth USB mouse works fine- There is no difference if running on battery or with a cord- Disabled either the touchpad or the trackpoint Seems to me like a driver issue. One anomaly in the drivers. The installed driver 19.3.4.202 date says 16.1.2018 but the support page gives the date 8.2.2018 for the same version.
