I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Is it possible to make a .reg file to optimize my visual effects for best performance for all users that sign into one PC?

I want to do this because we have many people who sign into the PC via our Active Directory through the network. If I can get a .reg file that just applies this to all users that would be awesome!

I recently ordered a Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H board from a supplier. The one I wanted was out of stock, so they sent me an alternate. A Gigabyte 970A-UD3. I was told by the customer service operative that the replacement board had PCIe slots that ran at x16 and x8. When the board arrived however, it turned out that the second PCIe slot only ran at x4. My question is as both graphics cards would be running at x4, with my two Sapphire 6870s AMD Phenom II 955 and 8Gb Corsair Vengeance DDR3, would the performance by the graphics cards be reduced too severely. The system is primarily used for 3D and Gaming, so the performance of this element is particularly important. Thank you very much for any advice you may be able to offer.

A:PCIe speeds x16 and x4 effects on 3d performance.

I don't know which Asus board you ordered but looking at the spec for what you got seems fine, supports crossfire and AMD Phenom series CPU's.

Most Asus boards have this arrangement,
1 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (blue)
1 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (x4 mode, black)
To support the same as Gigabyte does. Personally I prefer Asus, but I don't the supplier is at odds for sending you a very nearly exact part from a different manufacturer.

Now the following list is what you can choose to set on or off in the visual effects section of the performance menu, but I've NO idea what each one does. Of course it says what it does but there's no explanation, just a sentence.

* Animate windows when minimising and maximising.
* Fade or slide menus into view.
* Fade or slide ToolTips into view.
* Fade out menus after clicking.
* Show shadows under menus.
* Show shadows under mouse pointer.
* Show translucent selection rectangle.
* Show window contents while dragging.
* Slide open combo boxes.
* Slide taskbar buttons.
* Smooth edges of screen fonts.
* Smooth-scroll list boxes.
* Use a background images for each folder type.
* Use common tasks in folders.
* Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop.
* Use visual styles on windows and buttons.

If somebody could tell me what each of these do, I'd appreciate it so that I can choose which ones I want on and which I want off... Thanks! :)

First time posting here,

I recently removed a fake antispyware program, I don't remember the name of it but its like security tool.

Well after I got rid of it I scanned the computer with a bunch of different program, cleaned it all up, the usual stuff. But then I noticed I couldn't get windows firewall to start back up. There is an error message saying something like "due to an unknown problem firewall can't start" same with security center.

I've read online (probllably elsewhere in these forums) to check the services and registry. Well the services are plain missing from the list, and I can't find any way to restore them.

Looking for advice on how to get this running again, oh, and I can't. Turn on filesharing either.

Hello Exactrepair,

I can help you fix this, but first I need to see a set of logs. Kindly follow the instructions in our pre-posting topic New Instructions - Read This Before Posting for Malware Removal Help and post the requested logs in your next reply.

If you have trouble with one of the steps, simply move on to the next one, and make note of it in your reply.

I believe that my PC was/is suffering from Antivirus 2010 XP. Although Windows Defender, Spyware Doctor, and Error Nuker did not solve the problems, McAfee full scan did isolate a problem and the virus messages stopped. However many problems remain.

I am unable to remove or de-activate McAfee. When I click on the icon, nothing happens. A right click produces the options which do not respond either. When I try the add/remove program option I get the message "C:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe Application not found".

Trying to run a program is interesting. Some such as Firefox respond to a left click by asking what program should be used to open the file. A right button click followed by a click on "start" produces the message "c:\program files\java\jre6\lib\deploy\jqs\ff\..\..\..\..\bin\jqsnotify.exe Application not found." Another click to close the message and Firefox runs.

I tried to run GMER under this and another name. The result was a series of messages saying that access was not authorized. Finally the main window appears with most of the options dimmed in gray.

Please offer any guidance you can.

Thanks

First off, from what I've read just browsing this forum, you guys do a great service to help people with there computer problems. You are to be commended.
So here is my dilemma. I caught the nasty Vista Antivirus 2010 on my PC (this post is from my Mac), I ran "Rkill" and the Malwarebytes program and everything seems to be running fine, except for my internet connection and my Itunes software when my Iphone is plugged into it.

I have an HP slimline that I use as my PC (this is the infected one) and my connection is wirelessly with a Linksys WUSB100 usb adapter. When the PC is booted up there is no internet signal and no wireless networks to be found. I get the message connection status: unknown The dependency service or group failed to start. I tried to reinstall my drivers for the wireless router and adapter but it stated that i already had another wireless program installed. The Itunes issue is not recognizing the phone when plugged in but I believe that is due to bad drivers also, which could be addressed if I could get internet access on that computer. I wonder if the virus is lurking around still on the computer. Anyway, help would be appreciated. just tell me what to do and I'll follow. Thanks so much.

Hi,Do you have an anti-virus product installed? If so, update it and run a scan. Post me the logs.If not, Download and install an antivirus program, and make sure that you keep it updated
New viruses come out every minute, so it is essential that you have the latest signatures for your antivirus program to provide you with the best possible protection from malicious software. Two good antivirus programs free for non-commercial home use are Avast! and AntivirUpdate the anti-virus product you decide to install and let it run a scan. Quarantine any infections it finds.
Note: You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as impairing the performance of your PC.Casey

Hello, my computer recently was infected with the Vista 2010 "Antivirus" virus, and thanks to this website, it has been removed. However, I think that my computer is still afflicted by it, let me explain.

After the virus was removed, I ran MBAM again, as well as Microsoft Security Essentials, and nothing was found on my computer. Good news.
However, I still was getting false proxy notices via Firefox (remedied by tools->options->advanced->settings->no proxy). But! IE cannot connect, my desktop gadgets (Weatherbug specifically) cannot access the internet, and other programs like Steam cannot display things in the store, etc. I still have access to the internet, and other programs like Steam still show my online friend list, and Ventrilo can still access and connect to servers. So I have internet, but I'm not sure what the problem is.

I believe that the virus tampered with settings, or is still lurking in my system (I've heard it tends to come back, I just made a new restore point a few minutes ago). Help with this false proxy situation would be greatly appreciated.

Happy Holidays

Quick edit: I am running Vista Ultimate

More than likely your Registry Cleaner has messed up your Windows registry causing your problems.
You might try doing a System Restore to a date/time before you used your Registry Cleaner.

Hey.
Sat down at a friend's computer the other day that he says is slow. It proves to be kinda slow, so I defrag even though it's not needed, I check for spyware and viruses (ad-aware/norton), then I run HijackThis just for kicks, nothing alarming.
Not only is it slow, but when she dials up to the 'net and tries to go to, say yahoo.com, it doesn't try yahoo.com, it tries yahoo.org, .net .biz and a host of other web page extensions. It will never find the page. I thought this might be some sort of spyware or virus, but norton found nothing, and ad-aware found nothing as well. I ran microsoft anti-spyware too, nothing found.

Any suggestions,
well, i'm off to help the hijack forum questers...

Hi rive0108

Nice post, good and very Important info.
I'm a Lifetime member at VB, I was awarded a Lifetime membership for the years I worked as an Independent Unknown Variant tester (in my spare time) for the major companies a few years back.
VB100% is the AV Bible AFAIC, and any product that can't attain a VB100% is not worth a cent IMHO.

There's a few surprises in this most recent round of testing I must say...don't you think? A couple that I really didn't expect to see fail in there, and a bunch of the regulars to the Failure list as well.

Anyway, I hope some of the less security savvy members can find some use for this info and possibly drop their garbage AV if they have one, and get something worth it's weight in Gold...(like Nod32...not like I'm endorsing or anything...but NOD32 - by Eset...thats N-O-D-32...ok)

Hello there. Recently, (A couple of days ago to be exact..), I switched from Malwarebytes to Avast! Due to my Malwarebytes trial expiring. I switched to Avast! because it was the second best antivirus I knew about, at least, from what I remember. I ran a full system scan shortly after installing Avast! to find there were no threats detected.

Yesterday, I was all set to go to bed and I shut down my computer the right way, by using the "Shut down" button on the start menu in Windows 7. I turned off my screen to find it was still trying to shut down 10 minutes later, this is something that usually, doesn't even take 20 seconds for me, so I figured the PC hung and thought nothing of it, so I used the power button to hard power off.

I turned my computer on about 20-25 minutes ago to find it took 2-3 minutes (After entering password) to log on. Again, this is something that never even used to take 20 seconds. This has lead me to creating an account here and making this post, blaming Avast!.

I'd usually just get rid of the program that I thought was causing it, but since I have no other antivirus, I wanted to keep it until I got your thoughts and opinions on Avast! Could you please recommend a new (free, if possible) antivirus to me that is fast, and can run without tampering with my PC performance or other programs open?

If it helps, here is a screenshot of my Avast! information and some basic information on my PC specs, thank-you.

-Tamzin.

A:Is Avast! Antivirus Known To Effect PC Performance?

I have Avast free on a couple of systems and I don't see the performance issues you see.
I don't have any of the optional Avast "bloat" installed.
You can see what you have installed in Avast Tools.

You could try other lighter AVs such as MS Security Essentials or Panda free.
Download Microsoft Security Essentials from Official Microsoft Download Center
Best Free Antivirus Download | Panda Free Antivirus 2015

If you do want to try another AV, use the Avast uninstall utility to remove Avast before installing another AV.

Also, MalwareBytes is not an Anti-Virus, it is an Anti-Malware.

A:Having no 3rd party antivirus causes performance impact

I find the title a little misleading. When you have straight Windows 10. Windows Defender is the AV. Unless you have fully disabled it is still running in the background. Yeah I find Avast pretty light. Remember take these tests with a grain of salt!

Hello Forum
Thanks for all the answers.
On my pc there is installed AVG free antivirus, in the middle of the interface is a light blue "Fix Performance" button, I clicked on it to see what it is, then new interfase opened, started a search, in the analisis mainly it found errors in the registry, other items not so important.
Can somebody tell me if this "fixer" is reliable (I tried to right click on any item, it did not give any details about the item),
In win 7 I used "Ccleaner" (which is yet not installed). Attached here two screenshots.
Answers will be appreciated.
Thanks

Spam or scam? Even if it's from AVG. Stay away from anything called "Tune Up", "Speed Up". What you're seeing, is what is called "Scareware".

Hello everyone,

I have done a lot of research on Google as well as on this forum to find a solution to my problem. Unfortunately, people who have posted on the forums have SIMILAR but not the exact problem as I have.

I would like to take this opportunity and explain exactly whats been going on, hoping it'll make it easier for you to determine the cause of this issue.

So, I have built my computer about a year ago. It was all fine until May 2010, when my computer started to show signs of slow performance, which means running programs started not to respond and the games I was playing was getting stuck from time to time. At that exact moment, if I tried to restart my computer... It would reboot very slowly, motherboard logo will be displayed about one or two seconds delayed and finally when it comes to 'Starting Windows', It always getting stuck there for about 3 to 4 minutes and then Windows Logo comes up. It takes 20-30 minutes until Windows is completely loaded. Even so, it is still slow. It is impossible to use the computer.

This doesn't always happen, its only sometimes. That is what confuses me because It is making it extremely difficult for me to determine a real cause, I cannot make a decision whether its a software or a hardware problem, if it is the hardware problem, which component is it? It seems that If i remove a memory chip or two, it goes back to normal and everything functions well. Eventually, It makes me think that its the memory chip that at fault.. but ... Read more

A:Slow Performance, Slow Boot-up - Cause Undetermined!

I wonder if it is a heat issue. Try testing your temps with Speedfan.

SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer

You may also try a disk defragment, and make sure it has adequate free space (at least 10GB).

Hi Welcome to TSG!!

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have the Windows Recovery Console pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.
Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

Download the file & save it as it's originally named.
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.

Please note once you start ComboFix you should not click anywhere on the ComboFix window as it can cause the program to stall.

Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.

Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

At the next prompt, click 'Yes' to run the full ComboFix scan.

Hi new to these forums and I'm hoping someone can help me out here.

I formated my HDD and did a clean install (W7 7100 build) but I'm noticing slow boot times and slow performance compared to Vista x64. W7 boots at least 10secs slower and programs tend to lag (aren't as snappy compared to Vista).

The only reason I can think of that is causing this are driver issues? I didn't install any drivers manually besides my videocard driver.

Any help would be great, and please refrain from telling me your windows 7 is faster than your old OS, that's great to hear but it won't solve anything.

Thanks!

A:W7 Slow Boot Time and Overall Slow performance

The only thing that really stands out as being 'possibly' problematic is the video card you have. Drivers are available from ATI (9.4) but are experimental under Win7. Otherwise, your system should sing along quite nicely and, yes, even see an improvement over Vista.

You *could* try using the WDDM1.1 drivers from Microsoft. They're not as effecient as the 9.4 Catalysts for my HD4870x2's but they're not 'laggy', either.

It's pretty unanimous the W7 boots considerably faster than Vista. Yours should, too.

Hello all, sincere thanks to all those who take time to help people on this forum. My win7 system is acting up very very badly...

I recently ran my avast full scan and came up with the sality 32 virus, and ran the specific AVG removal tool exe which I believe (days ago..) said it was clear, then use the computer for a few days, and updated Avast before doing a system reboot, also did a malwarebytes can and an adaware scan as well which both came back clean before rebooting. Reboot took about 30 minutes, very scary. And sure enough, things are very sluggish, I have no apparent internet access (websites just load forever)I am seemingly locked out of admin access (cannot rename antivirus files so they would hopefully run), folders on desktop reliably require a double set of double-clicks to open and are sluggish, antivirus programs either fail to launch completely (mbam, Avast,  adware) or Superantispyware slowwly loading up (15 minute wait) and then constantly hanging/failing to respond at its update reminder screen.

Hijackthis does work yet gives me a message I've never seen about not being able to scan host files. When I run the command line like instructed by hijackthis it seems to just give me a stock, sample HOSTS file.

Right now I am not in safemode, should I immediatley reboot and retry antivirus programs? I am going to attach some images of my hijack this log. I have managed to actually get to the second screen of superantispyware and am hoping... Read more

A:Apparent virus, sluggish performance, antivirus programs refuse to run

very sorry to reply to my own thread, just wanted to add two additional photos of what the Hijackthis instructions generated and also my task manager. Task manager is also extremely snappy and is not running sluggishly like most things...

Exciting, bizarre updates...

Starting up a VLC file seemingly changed things.. For one, I have system sound but cannot get VLC to produce any sound, or register on the mixer. Avast suddenly loaded and I am now running a quick scan and also Superantispyware is also running a scan and is now showing me 231 detected threats FFS after only 2 and a half minutes running... And now I have internet access again with websites loading snappily yet youtube videos refusing to load...... All 231 were ad tracking cookies and I have a log.. NOw hijackthis runs normally without that additional request I've never seen.

What ze hell is going on?

Another update: was typing another response on the infected system when I decided to attempt renaming Mbam.exe to see if I had admin access... This caused the computer has seemingly locked up for five minutes now with a nice audio error (Errrrrrrr sound) and no movement of the mouse, no signs of life. I figure let it sit for at least 15 or 20 before hard reseting into safemode?

I recently upgraded to Office 2010...all was fine until recently i had this weird problem in Power Point '10.

I added an Entrance effect to a picture quite easily...but when I tried to add an Exit effect I found out that the Entrance effect was being overwritten in the "Animation Pane".
Again on re-adding the Entrance effect..the Exit effect was being overwritten.

FYI this is happening with everything (pics, text boxes, smart art).It seems you can't add two different effects to the same item.
It should be noted that I experienced no such problems with Power Point 2007...there the Entry and Exit effects were added in separate lines in the Animation Pane.

Any help would be appreciated.

Need Help....

Was burning DVD in Nero when the hardrive went crazy and couldn't burn the file. (File was an episode of TV series)... Had to manaully restart computer to stop it.

1.)After this the computer takes it's SWEEET time booting up.

2.) When ever mutitasking takes place the performance gets laggy. i.e When moving the mouse in a figure eight, every 1 sec it will jutter or Media player jutters when playing the first couple secs of a movie.

3.) Programs now take extra long to load!!! e.g Counter strike.. takes longer to load....

Ok.. this is what I have done to try and fix the problem

-Defrag computer, scandisk, diskclean up, checked for any spyware, installed other software to monitor/trace boot up of XP, minimise any autostartup services e.g winamp etc, free up more diskspace on the computer.... STILL IT DOESN't HELP!!!...

*** could be wrong with the computer???.. Please help.. Now attempting to mod my pagefile.sys to see if it helps.. *sigh*.. nothing helps..

PC Info: P4 2.0, 512RM, Partitioned 60G drive into 3 partitions, XP installed on C: (20% free), 15% free on D: and 7% free on E:

A:Slow bootup and slow PC performance

Hi and welcome to TSF. Looks like you've tried everything, but here's a few more suggestions.

Have you run scandisk in thorough mode to find any bad sectors?

Do you know where Nero keeps its temp files? Something might have got left behind when it crashed.

Which drive is your pagefile on, and what size is it? Try changing it from dynamic to static (min & max numbers set to the same value).

You might want to defrag and then free up some space on all 3 partitions. Less than 20% free space will slow things down, but probably not to the extent you're experiencing. Do you really need 3 partitions on such a small drive?

Reinstall Nero.

Good luck, and post back if you still need help.

A:very slow startup and slow performance over all

Try running the Dell diagnostic test, and download the diagnostic program from your hard drive's manufacturers web site. If it is Western Digital you can download WinDig here. You can also hold down the windows key ( the one with the flag on it) and press R key. In the box that comes up type msconfig then go to the startup tab and take as much as you can out. Mine has my anti virus and windows sidebar open at startup and nothing else. That does not mean they won't work, but only that they don't start at startup.

Edit: You should also take off all the programs and services Dell puts on your computer that you don't need or use.

Hello rawrzaur,

Please download aswMBR.exe and save it to your desktop.

Double click aswMBR.exe to start the tool. At this time, select No when prompted to download the Avast database.
Click Scan
Upon completion of the scan, click Save log and save it to your desktop, and post that log in your next reply for review. Note - do NOT attempt any Fix yet.
You will also notice another file created on the desktop named MBR.dat. Right click that file and select Send To>Compressed (zipped) file. Attach that zipped file in your next reply as well.

My pc is running xp with service pack 3 its a celeron 3.06ghz 3.07ghz /w 224mb ram (acer aspire)
With my small amount of knowledge I cant find a fix and have used techsupportguy before in a read only way as ive found similar problems to my own in the past and 9/10 times have solved my problems.however i would really like someone to personally have a look at whats holding back the performance of my machine lately please.

The problem is i have followed the instructions of your everyone must read first thing and downloaded the appropriate programs and ran them.
DDS only gave me 1 log regardless how many times i ran it and gmer crashes immediately every time so i cant get a log for that one either.
Will the logs ive gathered be enough info or does anyone have a solution for the above?
I used to use Kaspersky online scanner to find the odd virus or malware but thats been down for maintenance for 40 years so no help there.

I own a Dell Dimension 2400 PC with a Pentium 4 processor; 38 GB hard drive and 256K RAM. I use Windows XP Home Edition version 2002 with Service Pack 3 installed. The heaviest used application is Internet Explorer (connected via a wireless network) and Microsoft Outlook. I also have McAfee Security Center installed with Virus Scan, Personal Firewall and Anti-Spam installed and operational.

My computer has been "dog slow" for the past six months or so and I can't fathom why as I haven't changed anything on my computer. I have gotten a few pop-up windows recently on my task bar stating that "Virtual Memory is low. Windows will attempt to fix." However, I have not seen any improvement in my computer's performance. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can improve performance? Thank you.

I have a Gateway DX4860-UB20P desktop (Mfg date 2011). Here are the specs from Speccy:

CPU: Intel Core i3 [email protected] GHz (Temp 27 degree C)
RAM: 6G Dual Channel DDR3 @ 665MHz (9-9-9-24)
Motherboard: Gateway DX4860 (CPU 1) (Temp 31 degree C)
Storage: 931GB Western Digital WDC WD10EADX-22TDHB0 ATA (SATA) (Temp 35 degree C)

I acquired this from a friend. It did have maleware on it. Cleaned up and it seemed very slow. Decided to to a clean install and it did not make any change. No error pop ups just slow to respond. Since there are no errors, no temp issue, performed clean install, and decent hardware specs, I'm not sure where to start in finding the cause for slow response.

I just looked at task manager and noticed the following:

29 processes, CPU 0%, Memory 12%. CPU will be a 7-10% when I open Task Manager but goes directly to 0%.

Just installed IE7. Like it but things download more slowly now. Coincidence? What can I do to resolve? I have an hp742n with 1.66 GHz & 480mb of ram.

(I know I added ram after buying the computer; will the added ram show in the system information? I thought I had a gig....)
