PRINT SPOOLER SHUTS OFF

Q: PRINT SPOOLER SHUTS OFF

Running Windows 7.
Every time I shut the computer off or reboot it, the "print spooler" stop running.
I go to "control panel" and restart the print spooler. The spooler works until I shut the machine down,
then I have to restart the spooler again.

Why is the spooler shutting off? What can I do to fix it?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am unable to print with my Canon Pixma ip2600 printer. It seems that I am able to install the printer without problems, but as soon as I try to print anything, I get an error message that the "Spooler SubSystem App has encountered a problem and needs to close." I am running Windows XP on a Lenovo X60 IBM Thinkpad. I use a Magic Jack on this computer, but I have tried printing with the Magic Jack closed and that didn't help. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the printer multiple times, installing the drivers from the CD ROM, installing the drivers from the Canon website, running the Microsoft Fixit 50126, and reformatting my hard drive. I took the laptop to the tech support guys at my school and they claimed they were able to install and print using a different printer with this laptop. I tried installing and printing with my printer on a friend's identical laptop, and that worked. I simply can't figure out how this laptop will successful print with a different printer, and this printer will successfully print with a different (but identical) laptop, yet I can't get the two to work together. Any ideas? Thank you so much!

The print spooler shuts down as soon as I touch any printer. By "touch" I mean 1) try to print 2) try to look at the properties of the printer 3) try to add or delete a printer . . . etc. This problem began right after installing an upgrade to Quickbooks 2007. I don't know if there is a connection to that event but that's when the printer problem was observed. While trying to fix this, I noticed that there was a printer installed which said "Quickbooks to PDF". I was able to remove it from the list of installed printers, but it did not fix the problem.

I am able to restart the print spooler but it fails again at first touch. I get an error message which says someting like, Sorry, we have encountered a problem and are shutting down the print spooler. There is no other information provided. I have tried disabling the spooler and restarting it. I have tried both automatic and manual settings, with no effect on the problem.

Any ideas? (Thanks!)

Sorry, I forgot to mention that this is XP Pro.

How about a system restore point back to when it worked, prior to the QuickBooks install.

Actually, if you print at all in QB, you may find that QB to pdf quite handy.

In Windows 10 the print spooler has developed a problem and shuts down even when I have restarted it. I am attempting to print from either of two HP printers or a Brother, all on the LAN. In the Print Spooler Properties screen the service status is Stopped. Startup type is set to Automatic.

Recovery tab is set to Restart the Service for first and second failure, take no action on subsequent failures, Reset fail count after 1 day, Reset service after 1 minute and Enable actions for stops with errors is not checked.
Log On tab, the Local System account is checked and Allow Service To Interact With Desktop is cleared.
Dependencies shows HTTP Service and Remote Procedure Call.
It responds to Start and the Service status changes to Running but within 15 seconds it shuts down and shows Stopped.

Printers seem to function well in all functions not requiring the computer.

The way we fixed it was by checking the Properties on the Print Spooler service under services.msc.

The print spooler chokes on both of my Windows 10 machines when trying to deal with certain pdf files. For instance when I tried to print https://thebasscase.files.wordpress....01/so-what.pdf via my browser (Chrome), it printed the first 6 pages, but the printer showed an error when it came to the seventh page. When I then tried to create another job just to print the seventh page, it just hung around in the print spool and nothing happened at the printer. I tried this several times on two machines. It was also impossible either to cancel the job in the print queue manager or to stop the spooler in the services manager in order to manually clear the print queue, which meant that the only way I could clear the queue was to restart the machine. I got the same behaviour whether I was printing to my physical printer or to the MS pdf printer. I also got the same behaviour when I tried to print from a different browser (Edge). This is not the first time I have had a problem with an unprintable file like this in Windows 10. Is there a solution?

A:Print spooler chokes when attempting to print certain pdf files

Chrome has had an issue with printing PDF's from the built in PDF viewer. There is nothing wrong with your printer, Windows 10 install or Print Spooler.

Save the PDF and then print from Acrobat if you need the pdf printed.

Google refuses to fix their problem.

If you open it in Firefox, it will print.

I'm running XP Professional. Junk print jobs keep showing up on my Brother MFC 7840-W printer. When viewed in the print queue, the file has no name, but shows a size of 87 bytes.

The printer is installed on my computer. My computer is set up as a print server. I am still able to scan, make copies, and fax from the printer, and fax remotely from my computer. I have restored my system multiple times. I had AVG anti-virus on this machine installed a while before this started happening. I tried installing McAfee Security. The Tech Support at McAfee said there is no virus on my machine and that I should contact the printer manufacturer. Tech Support at Brother said to delete and reinstall the printer drivers. I have deleted and reinstalled the printer drivers multiple times.

I do not want to reinstall XP Pro because it may mess up the setup of an important business application which is no longer supported by the software creator.

Hi,

I would suggest you can try doing System Restore to a date when your system was working fine. If you successfully restored your computer to a previous state, and the computer performs as expected, then Uninstall and reinstall the printer Driver and check the functionality of the printer.

If you are using windows 7 you can connect your USB printer by following few easy steps mentioned below:Plug in the printer, and ensure that it's turned off. Also, set up the printer with ink and paper and all that other good stuff, according to the directions that came with the printer.
Connect a USB cable to the printer and to your laptop.
Turn on the printer.
Since you're using a USB printer it installs software for you on its own. After the printer has been set up and recognized by Windows, you can either print or save some energy and turn the printer off.

If you're having trouble adding your printer, open the Control Panel and double-click the Printers or Printers and Faxes icon to display the list of printers available to your computer. The Add a Printer or Add Printer task can be clicked to run the Add Printer Wizard, which helps you complete the printer setup task.

You can even refer to the HP support URL mentioned for further troubleshooting: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/support-topics/printer-installation/printer-usb-troubleshooting.html

Share your comments if it solved your problem.

I have a fairly new PC computer running Win 8 64bit. Initial setup went off without a hitch. Wireless printers and such all worked fine.

Now, I select "print" from Microsoft Word, or Notepad, or any program for that matter, nothing happens, i.e. no print que, no printer page, nada. My control panel shows several printers installed. I have tried to delete all printers to start from scratch, however, the printer icons pop back up as quickly as I delete them.

I tried to install a newly purchased printer, but a message was returned stating, "no printer spooler service running" or something to that effect. I then opened the service page and turned the print spooler "on' in automatic mode. Nothing changed. It still returns a message about "Print Spooler not running", even though it is turned on in the services page!

I might add that this computer is part of a home sharing network with two other desktop PCs. They both perform flawlessly, interfacing wirelessly with the two HP printers on-line. The other desktops are running win 7 64bit.

I am truly out of airspeed and ideas. Thank you for your help.

Welcome to TSG...What make and model is your machine? Which version and service pack is your Windows O/S? Make and model of the printer might be helpful as well.

Go to services again-double click the spooler service, click the 'dependencies' tab, and see if there are other services besides RPC which your print spooler requires. Some lexmark printers, for instance, require that a service called Lexbccs (not sure about the spelling) must also be running for the spooler service to start.

(Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, HP LaserJet CP1215)

When printing from Word (or any other normal application) the documents just sit in the print queue with Status = "Error - Printing".

If I stop, then re-start the Print Spooler service, they then print.

Strangely enough, this does not happen if I print from the HP printer diagnostic utility.

I've done complete re-install of the entire printer driver suite and I'm pretty sure everything that end is OK. So what's happening with the spooler? The error message isn't exactly very revealing .

Any help gratefully accepted!

Made sure it was set to automatic. Also found RPC stopped. Restarted. Tried all suggestions in old thread on this subject. Bought new printer. HP CP1025. Same problem. Cleaned out registry to remove all references to old printers. Still won't work. Ran automatic installation from CD before connecting the printer. It gets to 100% installed, but won't go on to connect printer. Tried plugging in the cable and it finds the printer on the usb port and runs the install from there but when it gets to the end, it says that it couldn't complete the installation as the RPC server is unavailable. But the RPC service is running.

Anyone still using XP that has run into this problem and found a more recent solution than those listed in the old thread?
Thanks.

Ok here's my situation. We have a Windows 2003 Print Server sharing 133 printers with approx. 300 users. We have 4 Terminal Servers hosting about half of all of our users, which all connect to printers on the print server. We're experiencing extremly slow spooling on some printers on some larger documents (larger meaning 50MB). Other printers receiving print jobs from the thin clients via the Terminal Servers, get stuck in que. We end up having to restart the print spooler, printer or deleting the job. We have recently upgraded our memory (to 4gb) but with no success. The CPU's do not max out at the time of the problems. There are no unusual errors in the event log. Our C drive has 28GB of free space.
I had set up the server to reboot and auto-login weekly thinking that might help, which it has minimally. We're still experiencing problems with this and I'm all out of ideas. I wouldn't mark this as urgent, but the CEO's new secretary was trying to print a page from a .pdf and it took extremely long. She made sure everyone knew about it.
Thanks in advance!

My problem seems to be so universal with Windows that I'm sure this request has been answered somewhere on this forum. I just don't know what to call it ?

What continues to plague me with MS-Windows print spooler is trying to delete a print that has already been spooled out. You go down to the task bar / open active printers / highlight the print you want deleted / Windows says it's in the process of deleteing the file.... and then just stops ! Ten minutes latter, Windows is still trying to delete the print. (And naturally, you can't print anything else in the mean time.)

Shutting off the printer doesn't help. Nor does rebooting or shutting of the computer. The pesky SOB is still there preventing anything else from being sent to the printer. And you just can't get rid of it. The only thing that's ever worked for me, was to make PrimoPDF my default printer and go in and delete the HP5500. Believe me, uninstalling and reinstalling is faster than the endless wait on the spooler as it "tries" to delete the print.

I've run into this on so many computer / printer combos I've lost count. If memory serves me correctly, this has been a problem ever since Windows 3.0 !

Any ideas of how to get rid of an unwanted print hung up in the spool ??

Thanks

Joe Ashe

Im running Windows XP and my HP printer has stopped working. I get an error message regarding the print spooler not working. I go to the 'PRINTERS" folder and it shows that the re is no printer installed. Im wondering if I did something to cause this. I use the free version of Abexo Registry Cleaner as well as Zoftspy SE (purchased version) which I use daily. I have used Ad aware but I've deleted it.
A short time ago I did have a Trojan (ad installer?) but my NAV deleted it. I still get messages from NAV that attempts to hijack were blocked by the NAV firewall.
Also, the System restore wont work, whether I turn it off and restart it......not at all.
Please help if you can.

Respect, Hubbuddy.

Hello and welcome to TSG!!

Can you start the service? Is it set to start automatically? Or is something preventing it from starting? Does it start and immediately stop again?

I have two problems that have been really bothering me the past few weeks. I am not able to print anything and an error message keeps popping up. Im not sure if the two are connected but both are very aggravating.

1.) Ok, the first problem is everytime I logon an error comes up titled acrotray.exe- Bad image. The box then says:

c:\Windows\system32\sfc.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.

I dont know what the program is to even try to reinstall it.

2.) The second problem is wayyyyyy more annoying, and I need to fix it asap because of school and writing papers and whatnot. I couldnt get it to print so I uninstalled the program and tried to reinstall but it still wont let me add the printer. Every time I try to add a printer a error comes up stating:

Windows can't open Add Printer. The local print spooler service is not running. Please restart the spooler or restart the machine.

I have already tried starting the spooler by going under services.msc but it doesnt do anything. It says its started but I still cant add a printer. I have also tried doing a command prompt but whenever I do that it just says:

System error 5 has occured. Access denied.

This is really starting to bug me and I just want to fix the problem.
Please Help!

Somehow the print spooler option on my computer is turned off. Also the Lexbce, both are dependent on each other. They were working at one time. Contacted Lexmark printer and they sent me directions to do exactly what I've already tried. That is, gone to Adm. Tools, service, found what I needed and tried to turn it on. No luck. Can anyone give me instructions on how to do this. I'm running windows XP.

Assuming you have administrator rights, Go to start, settings, Controlpanel, admin tools, services. Find Print Spooler, Right click it, select properties. Look in center for box click on down arrow select Automatic. Reboot see if it loads.

I need to know how to start my print spooler. When I try to start it I get the message 1053-could not start sprint spooler service on local printer.
This comes up when I try to download and install software and drivers for my HP 7310xi all in one printer.

A:no print spooler

Hi, could be a number of causes for this, first place to look is the spooler settings in the registry.

Go to start , search and type:-cmd, right click on the returned cmd.exe and select "run as administrator" at the prompt copy paste this:-

Code:
reg query "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Spooler" > /v /s > 0 & notepad 0
press enter. Please post the notepad outcome here.

This is perfectly safe as it only queries the registry NO changes are made.

I had that error before. Try this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/216221 to clean up the service to see if maybe it's just backlogging everything.

If not, try reinstalling the service.

Go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Component Services/Services. Scroll down to Print Spooler and be sure it is enabled. If not, double click it and set "Start up Type"to "Automatic" and reboot your computer.

Hi and Welcome to TSF

If it is a Lexmark or Dell printer make sure that:

1. Go to Start > Run and type in services.msc then press Enter.
2. Click on Lexbces > Right click - Properties, Change recovery to automatic instead of disabled.

I've been searching the entire web and can't find the answer that works. I have a Dell desktop that is about a year old. The past two weeks my printer has been going out. I've traced it down to the fact that my print spooler doesn't start on startup. I can turn it on and everything is fine, but when i reboot my machine it doesn't turn back on.

I've tried using the Command Prompt as an administrator and I keep getting Error 5 no matter what I do. I've removed my Kaspersky antivirus and had no luck. Now i can't reinstall it. I also can't install the FixIt center from microsoft.

I've already tried the following tasks with no luck. Any suggestions?

Things to try when print spooler won't start

When I boot up XP my printers won't show up and I can't add any. It says my print spooler isn't running. Sometimes when I reboot a couple of times they show up and all is fine. How can I manually turn on the print spooler when I get this message so my printers will show up? One is attached directly to my computer and the others are on the network.

A:Print Spooler

Is Print Spooler started in Services. Go to Start>Run, type Services.msc.
You also mention that you have a network, are you using SP2? Make sure Print Sharing is enabled , see if this article will help http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1596.
