I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all,

About a two weeks ago my dvd drive stoped working (it could have been longer but I havent used the drive), this only a few weeks after upgrading to Windows 7.

When looking in device manager my DVD drive is not recognised and I'm stuck what to do next. The DVD drive has power to it but I can play or burn.

Is my DVD drive just broken or has windows 7 'lost it'

Have tried some of the regedit solutions but nothing seems to work.

Any ideas greatly appreicated. I'm a bit of a computer novice and am at a loss at what to do

A:DVD/CDROM not working

An easy way to check if the DVD Drive is gone from Windows 7 or just plain gone is when your computer is booting up. Press either F2 or DEL to boot into the BIOS and check if that DVD Drive is listed under its installed devices (may have a different name in your BIOS).

Although Windows ME tells me my DVD/CDRom drive is working, it's not. When I insert a CD, and click on the drive, it asks me to insert a CD and then just hangs. I've been told it could be a Virus, but when I run a virus scan, it says the drive is locked. When I boot up, the boot drive is not detected. What's happening and how do I cure it.

I have a Atapi 44x cdrom (syst prop... says working fine) This all started when the tech that built/sold the computer to my husband... came to work on it! It was set at 233 meg hrtz which I ?'ed when it sold to him as a 400. Well until he worked on it... the cd player worked fine but after he was done it no longer worked. I will not ever have him back to work on it again.. so now I need help (he left a screw head bit in the cpu box laying on the mother board.... for god sakes)
The CDROM you can hear is trying to run (light comes on you can hear sound) the little pin hole in the front of the player that if you use a paper clip in it and it opens the door, well it doesnt work either.
In the system configuration utility in the Config.sys there are only 3 things listed and checked
1. [common]
2. DEVICE=C:\CDROM\CDTECH.SYS /D:MSCD001 /UDMA2 /V
3. LASTDRIVE=M
and in th autoexec.bat only 1 thing is listed C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\setaudio/s (and right under that is) rem - By Windows Setup - C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001 /M:10 (NOT SURE WHAT IT MEANS IF ANYTHING)
dont know what else to check....Please can anyone help?? I know enough about copmuters to get around in them pretty good just need some directions!! Jazz

My son and i are thinking that this is the result of my nephew setting up an in home network so that three computers could play the same game at the same time. I think he set up a virutual drive to allow the computer to run the game even though it was not in this computer, maybe something like Deamon link or something? this was done about 2 years ago and it was about the time it stopped working but I did not realize anything was done to the computer by my nephew until my son mentioned it the other day. I have had people try different cdrom drive in the machine but the results were the same. I also did a search a few mins ago of all files for the word deamon and it came up zero.
Can someone please help me get this thing working? it has been very frustrating!

I recently was burning CDs and after about the 5th one, the CD Burner ejected one that was about 50% done. Since then I've not been able to burn another. I tried re-installing the driver, the program, but nothign seems to work. About a week later the CDRom drive stopped working as well.
When I turn the computer on it detects both drives, its only once I'm inside Win 98 that I cannot access them. The error message is something like internal error, or cannot access drive.
Any suggestions on how to correct this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hey all, I've got a few questions for you. Basically I just built a new rig. I'm using a P6NGM Mobo, an e5200 dualcore, 2gb of xm2 RAM, radeon 4850, and an LG GH22NP20 Dvd writer/reader. I threw in my old hard drive with XP SP 1 on it to use since I have all my personal info on it already. Right away the machine booted fine, but for some reason my DVD drive wont work. It appears as drive G in My Computer, but won't let me eject it through right clicking, nor does it read the cd/dvd that's put in. I tried another drive I KNOW works with the same cable connecting it to the mobo and got the same result: nothing.

Now, my computer also has been restarting for NO reason, unexpectedly. There's no warning at all. My drivers for everything are the latest I can get, and it all works perfectly except the OS. I am going to buy a new hard drive tomorrow so I can install the OS clean, but i don't know how I'm going to do it. Is there a chance the OS is preventing the dvd drive from working correctly? If so, a new HD should fix that. But if it doesn't, how can I install windows to the new hard drive? Eek! Help! =)

I have searched through several "optical drives not working" posts on this forum but am hoping there may be a test or two someone would know of doing before I try to price a new drive. It is the hp BDDVDRW CT21L SATA CdRom Device (BD reader/DVD and CD read/write/RW drive) on an HP Pavilion dv7 laptop. Warranty expired as of 07/2010. I was able to read disks earlier today. Put a data disk (written by friend, used in the recent past w/o trouble) and it will not read it. Light blinks a few times, you can hear it try to spin up and read then it goes quiet. Double-click the drive under My Computer and up pops a window stating Insert Disk. Cleaned then opened to check connections to no avail. Any other ideas/tests?

Thank you for your time,
Kenneth

Test with both burned and commercial discs. Also try CD's.

In any case, if it won't recognize discs, the drive is very likely faulty.

I just installed a new motherboard, power supply, cpu, etc. I've done this many times before, and am quite perplexed at why my hard drive is not running. My cdrom has the light on, is getting power, but it's not blinking. Usually when this happens it's because I've gotten the IDE cable wacky, in the wrong direction, but I've checked these things over and over. My new cpu is working, as is its fan, and the power supply fan is also running. I've plugged in everything the way I always do, but am getting nowhere, but frustrated.

The reason I replaced these things was because I got this static when I turned on my computer, and it wouldn't boot. Originally, I unplugged the floppy and the static stopped and it worked for a couple of hours. So, logically, I thought of the power supply. Put that in, still got the static, so figured it was the connector on the motherboard. So, I ordered the new motherboard with the proper cpu/fan, and it all seems to be alive, except my hard drive isn't running, it does have heat/warmth from the power however. I'm trying to be specific enough for you to help me.

Thank you so much, in advance.
Sincerely,
Meli

Ok, it was working FINE without problems - autorun would work, and explorer would notice the new cd placed in the drive. However, lately, when I place a new cd in either of my 2 cd drives, windows xp fails to load the volume name for either of the drives. I have to go into the cd and find the setup program, I can't even right click > autorun. It remembers the right-click menu settings and volume name for the previous cd, but will never update it for any new cds.

Perhaps the answer to this is as simple as "it's frelled," but I thought I'd ask. Everything worked fine yesterday. Today I'm showing a "Code 31" error in the device manager on my Toshiba CDROM XM-6102B. I'm running Win2k, and the hardware troubleshooter is, as usual, no help at all. Supposedly, code 31 means the device depends on another device that is not functioning properly, but as far as I can tell, there is no other device that is not functioniny properly. I have un/reinstalled the drivers, and removed and replaced all the connections. The drive is getting power, as it can open and close, and it does show up in the post screen, and in the device manager in windows, with the yellow "!". I don't have another drive I can swap in to see if that works, but can probably get one in the next few days. Any suggestions in the mean time? Or what to try if another drive shows the same problem?

Thanks

Welcome to TSG!!

Was it like this from the repair shop? If so, return to them with a request for a fully functioning machine, as you were expecting one after paying them for their services.

If this came about since then, let us know. There are various things to try. (One might be to pop open the case and be sure the cable(s) didn't fall off in transport.) Can you see it in BIOS?

I recently received a hand-me-down pc with a CDRom/DVD which worked fine. It runs on Windows 2000 sp4. I installed a CDRom-RW from my older computer and since then have not been able to read cds. The computers registers that they exists, states that the correct drivers are installed but when I put in a cd rom and click on the icon, I get the message: "The disk in drive E: is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?" Both drives, (E and F), give the same message with their respective drive letters no matter kind of CD in input.
The drives are installed master and slave correctly. Both drives will play music cds just fine.

Do I have to change any settings in bios?

bios settings shouldn't cause the computer to lock as you describe, but who knows.

I would suspect the cable, either bad or connected backwards, the red stripe on cable must go to pin 1.

Also double check that the jumpers are not set the same as the other device, only one master and one slave per cable

Also whatever ide channel you are adding the drive to should be set to auto or cdrom in the bios.

The drive could need cleaning, it may have failed, or a cable may be loose or disconnected inside the case. Did you move the pc lately? It's obviously getting power since you can insert a cd, but that doesn't mean the drive hasn't failed.

First thing I would try is cleaning the CD. You can use a regular CD cleaner if you have one or can get one. If cleaning it several times doesn't help, open the case and check the cable connections to the drive and motherboard. If the connections are good, try finding another drive that you can try in your machine.

Hi:

I've had experiences with a number of BTC CD_ROM drives of variable speeds. These relatively inexpensive drives manufactured by Behavior Tech Computer Corp. are not the world's most reliable. I've heard them squeek, sputter, gasp, wheeze, and groan on numerous occasions in quite a few systems that I've repaired. Your best bet is to junk that clunker and purchase either a new and different CD-ROM drive from another manufacturer or get yourself an up-to-date DVD or CD/RW drive made by a reputable company with a solid history of reliance. I'm not going to suggest a manufacturer, but if you do a little online investigation, you'll come up with your own choice. Good luck.

When you say it doesn't work.......is it recognized in the bios setup? Does it appear in my computer? Does it appear in control panel/system/device manager? Any yellow exclamation marks there?
