Solved: I'm using Adobe Reader 9.2 why is the updater offering Adobe Reader 8.1.4

Q: Solved: I'm using Adobe Reader 9.2 why is the updater offering Adobe Reader 8.1.4

I updated to Adobe Reader 9.2 from Adobe's website this morning and when I got home, it said Adobe updater needs attention. It was offering to install 8.1.4. Maybe because I haven't restarted yet. I thought that was weird. Several problems trying to open a pdf file after updating. Said tab has been restored and kicked me out of reader a few times. Finally it let me into the PDF and said it was parsing the data or configuring the file for reading or somesuch. I hope it stops behaving badly after a restart. paj692

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Solved: I'm using Adobe Reader 9.2 why is the updater offering Adobe Reader 8.1.4

Adobe has released some information about some big security holes in Adobe software: http://www.adobe.com/support/security/

You can turn off the updater as follows:
1. Load ADobe Reader
2. Go to Edit, Preferences
3. Select Updater at the bottom
4. Select 'Do not down or install updates automatically'
5. Click OK

When I am surfing the net and open a pdf, Adobe Reader begins the updating process which goes on and on and on - it never finishes! Any idea why this might be? At the moment I just eventually cancel the update so as to get rid of this winking updater icon on the task bar. (We're taking hours and hours!) I've trawled through the Adobe forums to no avail, but someone on BC will be able to help, I'm sure.
I'm running Vista Business. Thanks !

A:Adobe Reader 8.0 Updater

Don't know if I'm that someone, lulabelle,

but I will ask -

did you go to the Adobe site and download the current version, uninstall the one you have, and re-install the new one?

This might resolve the issue.
It's possible that your firewall is preventing the update. You might want to check it first, before you do the download/reinstall thing.

Let us know, OK?

sometimes my machine slows right down and when I look on Task Manager under `processes`, it says that the Adobe Reader is working and using almost all of my CPU in the process.

Even if I try to click on it and try and `end the process`, it won't close and just keeps running.

Three questions!

Firstly, what is happening and can it be stopped?

Secondly, I hate Adodbe and only have it to use PDF Files with. Is there another programme that will do the same thing, just read and produce PDF Files? I thought I saw something somewhere that was a programme that did all of this without any of the hassle.

Lastly, is there a programme that will convert PDF format bck to a word document?

Regards, Tolshar.

A:Adobe Reader Updater

Hi tolshar,
Are you actually using Adobe Reader when you get the slowdown? Sounds to me like maybe it's in your StartUp programs and is always running. If it is there, you can safely delete it from StartUp and have it open only when you need it.

As for alternatives, take a look at Foxit or CutePDF and see if they do what you need.

Hope that helps.

Adobe Reader updater is getting on my nerves. I can't understand why there are so many updates.
What is really annoying is that everytime it updates it has to restart your computer. It takes an age to download and install as it is.

I just don't see the point of all these updates sometime 2 or 3 a week. I have now disabled it and also blocked it on my firewall.
Does anyone know if this is a dangerous thing to do? After all it is only a PDF reader.

Anyone else fed up with Adobe Reader Updater?

Hello, Eight Forums.

Okay, this is what happened.

Yesterday, my Adobe Reader updated to Version 11.0.11 from version 11.0.10, which surprised me cause I didn't know there was a newer version out. When they changed to Version 11.0.10, they removed the Adobe Reader and Acrobat Manager/Adobe Reader Updater from the Start-Up entries and had put in a Scheduled Task to run the updater whenever the computer was idle. I found out this was to improve performance.

Alright then.

However when they updated to 11.0.11, they re-added the Start-Up entry. Which leads to the same executable as the scheduled task with no difference in target or whatever. Which is confusing. Especially since its set as a HKLM:Run entry.

So I've got Adobe Acrobat Updater as a service set to Automatic.
I've got a Scheduled Task set to run the updater whenever the computer is idle to check for updates.
Now I've got a Start-Up entry again which affects my boot time.

Can I use CCleaner to delete the Start-Up entry and just have the Scheduled Task again because it seems kinda pointless to have two different things check for updates.

Would this have any ill effects?
And yes, my Adobe Reader is set to Automatic Updates.

Hi there
I've just installed Foxit PDF reader -- It works fine -- now am uninstalling Adobe pdf reader.
Don't know whats up with adobe these days --if I could find a decent alternative to Photoshop I would --Note the GIMP is fine but I NEED photoshop unfortunately --it's still the best out there in spite of Adobe's messing up the latest releases of its software.

A:Foxit Reader works fine -- uninstalling Adobe pdf reader

I've used Foxit reader, but it wasn't totally compatible with Adobe Acrobat created PDF files, but in most cases it sufficed quite well. As for Photoshop replacements, there are a few others available and PaintShop Pro is not a bad alternative, though when Corel bought it out initially, it completely stuffed things up. I understand that it's fixed a lot of update issues etc in that time and it's leagues cheaper than Photoshop.

Do you guys remember when Adobe Reader was just this nice simple little PDF file reader. I had such a problem with Adobe Reader 9 and the site that I manage with all of Adobe Reader 9's add-on crap, that my once fine Adobe Reader 8 that came in at 60 MB's, with version 9 came in at over 200! I kid you not!

I'm sick of software companies piling on all this extra crap that has nothing to do with the performance or enhancement of the product. A PDF reader should be to read files....That's it. I don't need some graphic enhancing garbage, window washing, calender, singing man, Find Blimpy The Clown game, install the optional toolbar crap.

Luckily I was able to uninstall version 9 and go back to version 8 with the 8.1.3 within the program. Than I read at Adobe's site that there were some critical security patches for Reader 9. Well Adobe, if you would focus on the product necessities rather than the unrelated garbage, performance might be enhanced instead of hindered.

I can't wait to see what Blimpy The Clown does in Version 10! UGGHHH!

I created a pdf. file from a document that had 'fill-in forms'. I used Adobe Acrobat Professional 6.0. to create the PDF file.

I then I burned the pdf. file on to a CD.

When I used my Adobe Reader 9.0 to open the PDF file, I could fill-in the forms, but not save them. I received a message that said I could not save the information, only print it unless I enabled the ‘local save capability’ in the original pdf. file.

I will be selling the CDs and need the buyer to be able to fill-in the forms, and then save the document on the CD or the buyer’s computer.

1. How do I enable the ‘local save capability’ on Adobe Acrobat Professional 6.0, saving the document with the information typed into the fill-in forms?

2. How can I write protect the pdf. file so no one can edit it (except for the fill-in fields) nor duplicate the disk?

3. Has anyone bought a software product from www.SoftCaptain.com and if yes, what was your experience with the software product company?

A:Adobe Acrobat Professional & Adobe Reader

I can't answer all of your questions, but data on a CD is read only, you won't be able to save the edited file on that CD.
It can only be saved on the hard drive & then burned to CD again, if necessary.

Upgraded to EMET 5.5 and now I get a message when launching Adobe Reader saying:
"Adobe Acrobat Reader DC cannot be opened in Protected Mode due to an incompatibility with your system configuration. Would you like to open Adobe Acrobat Reader DC with Protected Mode disabled?"
If I select open with Protected Mode disabled, Adobe still crashes for certain operations. My default EMET settings for AcroRd32.exe are everything checked except ASR.
If I disable all mitigations in EMET 5.5, Adobe Reader works normally.
If I return mitigations to default and then additionally disable EAF+, the problem persists, although I found a post saying that fixed the issue in earlier versions of EMET.
Question: Is there a custom set of mitigations that enable Reader to work, or should I disable Reader mitigations in EMET, or should I disable Protected Mode in Reader, or should I use a different PDF viewer like SumatraPDF?

A:What's the difference between PDF Reader and Adobe Reader

Adobe Reader (current version is 11.0.13) is the most popular and most used PDF reader out there, but there are several others.
It's one of the "must have" programs that I install in every computer that I own or service.
Most of the on-line guides, manuals, etc. are in PDF format, so you need a PDF reader such as Adobe Reader to be able to open and view them.

Ok i solved this one myself but i still have questions that are unanswered,
I wrote in here all the details from start of problem to finish incase it would give a clue as to if i did anything wrong which might have caused this problem, this will bug me till the end of time if I can not work this out

Oh and i did do a search of the forum first to make sure it had not been answered before, and the search did not come up with anything.

I have Adobe Reader 9. I received through email two PDF documents from a friend, one smaller document one larger, the smaller one opens fine and I can scroll down and read it but the larger one, it opens but at soon as I try to scroll down it freezes (even after giving it a bit extra time to open as it’s a large file).

I opened it again in internet explorer and same thing happens it opens but freezes and have had to use on both occasions the task manager to close the programs.

I emailed my friend back thinking their might have been some fault with the down load, and asked her to send me the larger document again and asked her if she could open it and scroll down first before closing it and sending it to me, it worked on her computer.

So I opened the new copy of the document sent to me and same thing happens, now when it comes to Adobe, for me I have only had it on my machine to open PDF documents that I receive I never looked at the program other than to install it and stop the updates and it opens PDF’s other than that I don’t know diddly... Hi, I'm having trouble uninstalling my Adobe Reader 7.0
When I go into control panel and go to unistall it, this message comes up.
"The windows installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."
I have also tried going into C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Setup Files\RdrBig\ENU_\setup.exe.
But the last piece isn't there, so it can only go to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Setup Files\RdrBig\ENU_
So I have absolutely no idea what to do, I just want to get the newest version so that I can get my d-link to work for our wireless.
Please if someone could help that would be awesome!
I've tried searching the web a bit and using programs that say they will help you. Though once I want them to do something, I have to pay, so I'm looking for a free, easy way to do this.
Hope you can help, thank you!
