Lenovo Z510 random shutdown while plugged in

Q: Lenovo Z510 random shutdown while plugged in

I have a Lenovo Z510 laptop which turns off randomly while plugged in. It started intially only while playing games but then happened even while watching videos and browsing. Each time the interval got shorter and in the last stage it turned off the moment I inserted the charger pin. This never happens when its on battery so it not a overheating issue. I tried changing the charging adapter but it did not go away so I figured charger is not the problem. Then as a final solution got my Motherboard replaced and it went away but only for a month. Now even with a new mother board it randomly turns off while watching a video. Im really perplexed as to what could be the reason of such shutdowns. I really need to figure it out so it can replaced under warranty.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi vinayk23 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

There was a BIOS update for power issue on this model .
I would not however advise you to do it on your own since it may need constant ac connection and we do not want shutdowns to happen during the BIOS update as it may brick the pc .

I would rather have you call in tech support for assistance and back up your important files first for safe keep.

My Z510 has been randomly shutting down when plugged in, but doesn't have this issue when running on battery. I contacted Lenovo and they sent my a new power supply but the issue continues. I called again and they instructed me to repair-install the Lenovo power manager and do a disk check. The issue still continues. Anyone have this issue or know how to fix it? It used to happen when running something intensive like photoshop or a game and only if charging over 75%, but now it'll happen randomly. I can be sitting staring at the laptop with no programs running and it'll shut down. Z510i7HD 46008 gb mem1 tb hard driveWin 8.1

I would be working on something and the laptop would just switch off. The place where I bought it from replaced the charger once, the motherboard a second time and the third time they replaced the charger again at which point the problem seemed to have stopped. This was about 7 months ago in which time I haven't faced that problem again. Recently, I was playing a game on my laptop and the power was plugged in and the battery was charging from 15% and the laptop switched off. This happens whenever I run the game and the laptop is plugged in to power supply. However, if I run the game on just battery itself, I face no shutdown issues.  Can anyone help me?

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

Have you ever checked the temperatures to see if that is the cause of the shutdown ?    Use the free utility HWMonitor to see what the temperatures are when gaming with it plugged in and when gaming on battery only.  The program comes in two versions.  The first will install on your hard drive.  The second is a compressed version that can be unzipped and then copied onto a flash drive for a portable version.

Here is a link to that free program......

http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

Since the laptop has been in use for 7 months, if you never blew out the dust from the fan and heat sink you might give that a try as well.  Accumulated dust will increase temperatures and reduce the fan's performance.   Just use short bursts of compressed air in the intake and exhaust vents several times.  Avoid long blasts as they may damage the fan.  Cans of compressed air can be purchased from any computer or electronics store.

Have had a Flex 5 1470 for 2 weeks and today for several hours I ran into this issue where whether it was connected to power or working on battery power I could use the laptop only for around 3-4 minutes before it woud unexpectatly shut off (literally an immediate BLACK screen). I could then power it back on and continue to work for another 3-4 minutes before this would happen again. I downloaded a CPU thermometer and heating was not the issue (was operating well below the operating temperature for the i7).  Any ideas of what was going on? What might have caused this issue and more importantly how to resolve this issue? Your feedback is appreciated!

I have had a horrible experience with Lenovo customer support, and am looking for advice. My Lenovo Z510 started crashing only while plugged in, and of course this happened shortly after the warranty expired. Because it was out of warranty, I didn't bother calling Lenovo. I tried everything I could think of, replaced the fan, replaced the A/C adapter, replaced the heat sink and reapplied new thermal paste. I updated all of my drivers, and the system BIOS. I even took my computer into a repair place, and they couldn't determine what the issue was but offered to slowly start replacing things until the issue was fixed. This seemed expensive and a big risk, so I didn't pursue this. But the problem persists. I recently found on a Lenovo forum that this had happened to multiple people, and the problem was a bad motherboard. Because of this, I decided to call Lenovo customer support. The person I originally spoke with confirmed that he had also found several forums that showed Z510s had a faulty motherboard, and said because of this it was likely that despite being out of warranty they would still be able to fix my computer. He escalated my case, and several days later I got an email from Lenovo simply stating my computer was out of warranty. I emailed them back asking if they would be willing to fix it because of the known issue, and never heard back. A month later I called Lenovo, asking why I had never heard back, and they gave me a cookie cutter response that I needed ... Read more

I have an ideapad z510 which I have been using without any problems for the last 2 and a half years or so. For the last few weeks, it won't turn on if it's unplugged: the lights under the keyboard turn on for a brief moment, so does the power button, but then it all stops. When I plug it in, the first time I press the button it doesn't turn on either (same behaviour as when unplugged) but on the second attempt it turns on propperly. Once running, I can unplug it and it will keep working propperly.  What could be going wrong? How could I fix it?  For your interest: I cannot (easily) remove the battery, in case that matters.  Thank you for your help Leo

A:ideapad Z510 - turns on only if plugged in

Hi leocasasola,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

You can start with the power check out guide from the hardware manual (page 21-22) testing on the integrity of the AC adapter and operational charging to isolate.

Further steps may require certain tools and skill as board level checking (power board , systemboard ports and chips etc.), so it would be best that you take time to back up your data while you can and check on your local service center.

I can then start the PC again without no problem... This is really frustrating also seeing other users having this problem, if Lenovo will not respond, i might just return the laptop and buy another one. Hello, I have a 3 yr old Ideapad Z510(that came with Win8)which worked absolutely fine until recently. If I plug in the charger when the laptop is on, it abruptly turns off and would never boot again until I remove the charger. However, this is not how it behaves every time. There are some rare instances where I could still operate the machine with charger plugged in.  When turned off, battery is charging and also goes to full 100%. When turned on(battery mode) it does not drain rapidly - I could still get a fairly decent stand up time. So I am assuming the battery is good. I don't see any thermal issues either. Things I tried:-------------- > Tried with a different charger - no help.> Updated the firmware - no help.> Update the entire driver pack - no help.> Applied windows patches, reinstalled and also upgraded windows to Win 10 - no help.> Reseated the battery and associated cables - no help.  I am not sure if there is anything that I could do to at least diagonize the problem before I give it to the service station. Any pointers on this is much appreciated   Thanks much in advance.

I had been trying to speed up my computer and read articles and forums on removing start up items. Everything went good, no issues.  Computer still starting up slow and taking it's sweet time on processing tasks.  Random issues with WIFI connectivity. Telling me WIFI drive not connected, printer not connected....etc.  Just got new NETGEAR Nighthawk x4 smart wifi router model R7500 and the NetGear Genie....my wifi is not the problem. Strong signal in all rooms and even outside house, but computer randomly not connected. Then yesterday, random shut-downs when I am not near my computer?  I walked away for a few hours, had open QuickBooks, internet explorer search, OpenOffice and email.  When I came back everything was shut down and programs had errors, so something is forcing a shutdown.  Backup says drive is not connected and it backed up to the desktop.  Not sure where to begin trying to figure out what is making the computer shutdown. Right now I am planning the precaution of making sure I close items before walking away from computer.  I usually just put it to sleep and then come back and pick up where I left off. I make sure to shut down at least once a week for a back up on Fridays, which is when I scheduled it.  Thanks for your help

Hi everybody! Like many users on these forums and other sites I purchased my Y50-70 laptop, installed windows 10 only to be happily using it when suddenly there woud be a 'pop' soundand the whole thing would shutdown instantly. Searching the forums many people suggested it could be the 'COM Server application' which appears in the event log of the system. People suggested altering the registrysettings to fix this -this reduced the problem but didn't solve it as there would still be random sudden crashes. Others suggested driver changes, reverting a windows update, chaning the power supply, etc - nothing really worked and it stil crashed. Now to the solution! Simply put - I changed the wifi card - why? I was thinking of changing the OS to see if Windows 10 was the problem. After changing the wifi card my laptop has not crashed once - not once! This has now been over four months and I have had a perfectly stable system, it's great! Also changing the card is really simple. I have tried a different charger as my sister also has a lenovo laptop, but this did not work either. I would think if the battery was the problem, the laptop should still be working with the charger in? I have tried calling support line several times with no answer, the warranty has gone out and I forgot where i bought the laptop sadly. Dear all,
I'm looking for some help to understand the possible causes of the BSOD that I've met randomly while using my new Lenovo Thinkpad T430 - 2349-PHG.
The BSOD is not the only problem I'm having. While using the Laptop, sometimes the screen starts to shake, then the laptop shuts down without showing the BSOD. Sometimes, the BSOD appears. Each time I've to restore the Loptop to a previous point in order to make it work.
I've tried to run memory test using memtest86+-5.01, after 10 hours work and 9 runs, there was no errors.
I've tried to use driver?s verifier, however, when I set it up to work, the BSOD appears.
Attached is the recommended ZIP file to analyze the problem, only two dmp files are available.
I hope that I get some help regarding this matter soon.
Thank you in advance for your time and help.

I have a Lenovo IdeaPad Z510. I got it around 3 years ago, and this year, I realized that it has been running quite slow, or slower than usual. Whenever I open a chrome tab, it would take around a minute to set it up and would lag a little when I open up multiple tabs.  This is the specs of my computer.http://tech.firstpost.com/product/laptops/ideapad-z510-59-387061-specification-348262.html So, I was wondering, if I were to add more ram to my computer, would it fix this problem? Would my computer speed up and will respond/act faster? I know that I have 4 GB DDR3 right now, 2 GB that is shared with the graphics card and my task manager says that I have only used 1 out of 4 slots. Does this mean that I have another 3 empty slots that can be filled with ram? Also, is there a maximum amount of ram my computer can handle? I have seen some people ask about it but have no idea about it. So, my real question, would it be possible to add 8 GB of ram? This means that I would have a total of 12 GB ram, and would most likely have 4GB, 4GB, 4GB of ram, 3 slots taken out of 4. If I have 4 slots. But if I have 2 slots, then could I add an 8GB ram, and would have 4GB and 8GB, still totaling up to 12GB?

A:Lenovo Z510! ABOUT RAM

Hi fwachee,

Welcome to the COmmunity Forums.

Yes you can add 8GB ram to your current 4GB for a total of 12 GB.

As per specification from your hardware manual (page 27):
 DDR3-1600/1333MHz SODIMM 2 (max 16 GB)

Two slot are physically available if you would open it up for confirmation as shown below.

This would definitely improve speed and memory utilization of your machine specially with multiple browser and virtual machine apps.

Hope this help answer your query.

Regards

Lastly which processor would be a good option for this laptop? (I'm using this laptop mostly for gaming (of course as much as it allows me hehe), so I hope you guys will recommend me computer parts which will help me to get a better gaming experience on z510 ) Thank you all in advance!

Soo, I have seen a lot of posts about this issue, but none of them answered my specific question.I have a Lenovo ideapad z510 with i5-4200M processor and a 4GB RAM.I am looking forwards to upgrading my RAM to 8GB (I would like to insert another 4GB). I do realise that the laptop has 2 RAM slots and one of them is empty, but I do not know the specific measurements of the RAM card I should get (hight, width and thickness). Could anyone please inform me of the measurements of the RAM card I should get. I would  also gladly appreciate if someone could suggest a specific 4GB RAM card that would be compatible and would work nicely on my laptop. Thanks for any reply.

EDIT NOTE : This post was move to the top of the page to assist Lenovo with an escalation. For all future post and comments, please continue posting in this thread. i have this issue too, but when i changed the option "intel virtual technology" to enabled in the bios configuration section, my laptop started at 3.2 ghz on battery, then i changed the power option from "high performance" to "power saving" mode, it was redused to 0.77, then i changed back to performance mode,it speeded up till max. it seamed problem was solved.  i am not sure what intel virtual technology is doing or related to this issue, but it's worked for me. i hope this helps. meh, after 3 restarts it's stuck at 0.77 again, i think we definetly need a bios update. Edit- After a quick search, i ve found that "intel virtual technology" doesn't related to this issue, and it' NOT THE SOLUTION.  problem still exists. Also, just fyi, some other brands of devices faced this issue over the inernet and all solved by bios update or board replacement.    EDIT NOTE : This post was move to the top of the page to assist Lenovo with an escalation. A:Re: Lenovo Z510 CPU stuck at 0.77GHz

Hi! The CPU (i3-4000M) in my Z510 sometimes stuck at 0.77GHz. It doesn't matter if I set the performance to maximum in Windows and in Lenovo Energy Manager. It usually happens when the notebook is unplugged from AC but sometimes it happens on AC too. And also it doesn't matter if the computer is cold booted, restarted or waked up from sleep\hibernation. I have read about a lot of similar cases (just google on "stuck 0.77GHz").I'm using Windows 8.1 x64, the drivers ar up-to-date and all of the updates are installed. We are talking about a wold-wide problem since it is exists in other notebooks too. (e.g.: Asus) Is there any (un)known problem with the new Haswell processors\chipsets?What is the solution?

Hi all,  My z510 is a couple of years old now. Tonight it is refusing to charge and when it's attached to AC power the battery remains at 5%, while the icon looks like it's charging normally. I've restarted a few times and tried updating the battery firmware, but it was up to date already. I'm running the most recent version of Windows 10. Anybody know of a solution? Thanks!
