I have a NIVIDIA RIVA TNT2 MODEL 64P monitor with Windows XP installed. The brightness, color etc. on the monitor seem to be at the max but all images/pictures/movie files etc are very dark. Is there any other way to adjust the brightness on the monitor?
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
I think that's just your video card type. If your monitor is old and this has been gradually getting worse then it could be going. You can usually adjust the brightness with your video card settings.
Right click desktop, choose properties, settings, advanced. You may have to try a few of the tabs to find the controls.

Last tuesday I've received my new laptop / netbook: Asus X205TA. After installing everything I found out that my brightness isn't adjusting. I've tried to:
- Use all different ways to adjust brightness (charms bar, shortcut, power plan settings etc.)
- Windows update
- Update Microsoft Basic Display Adapter drivers (there are no updates available)
- Disable and re-enable the Display Adapter
Yet: it's not working. I've also have a problem booting up games. Even the simplest of games (as the netbook is low-spec) are either not booting up, or they show errors about not being able to access the video card or so. I wonder whether these issues have something to do with the brightness settings.
I'd appreciate any input from you guys
Well issue is that your graphics cards drivers are't installed, nor detected! So you are stuck with Basic Display Adapter Drivers
I had a look at the specs and it says "Integrated Intel? HD Graphics" which isn't helpful as there are different models of the Integrated Intel? HD Graphics

Is there a hotkey button to adjust the brightness on the laptop? If so maybe it is stuck or sticking.

well when my laptop is plugged in it shows maxiumum brightness, but when its not plugged in it become brighter, yet brightness setting shows in the middle, for not plugged in, how can i get the plugged in brightness to equal unplugged brightness, and I have tried changing power settings.
First of all, please specify maker and model of your laptop. Some vendors could have their own third party replacements for some functions.
Also, please go to Control Panel - Power Options - on the right side of your current active power plan select "Change plan settings" - in the next window click "Change ADVANCED power settings" - then navigate to - Display - Display brightness and check percentage.
I've recently got a new computer laptop with Windows 7 and the first thing I noticed that the screen is much brighter (and maybe more saturated) than my previous laptop (with Windows XP). First I thought it was my laptop, but then I saw an other computer with Windows 7, and the screen there is very bright too. I searched the net and I see that there are more people complaining about the brightness on Windows 7.
I understand that I can set the screen brightness, but it seems like a fact that the "default" brightness on Windows 7 is way brighter than on Windows XP. Some people are probably accustomed to this, but to me it's too much. I can decrease the brightness with the laptopl's controls on the keyboard, but I think that's not the way to go - I think I should look at the Windows 7 configuration. I could go to the ATI Catalyst, but is there an other way? Is the Calibration tool the only option?
And the second question, if this is a common problem, maybe there are some known settings that would take Windows 7 brightness closer to Windows XP and earlier versions?
If these are new laptops then, yes they will be brighter then older computers. But it has nothing to do with Windows. It has to do with the display themselves. A lot of the new LCDs on modern laptops are brighter quite a bit brighter then previous generations in part, moving to LEDs for the backlight.Read other 6 answers
Hi there guys,
I have a problem with my dell inspiron m301z laptop,
Whenever there is something dark on my display ( this could be a picture or a website or something else) my brightness automatically adjusts to that environment. So its like the brightness is adjusting automatically depending on the virtual environment. I looked up the forum for similiar problems and tried some things with the power options and stuff but couldnt not fix it..
However this does not happen when the adapter is plugged in, everything stays equal all the time,
Thank you guys.

I purchased a new computer the other day and it is running Windows 10 Home. One thing that's annoying me is that when I adjust the screen brightness through Control Panel it keeps getting undone. I recently upgraded from WIN98SE to WINXP. Before the upgrade I used to go into my Display settings to adjust the brightness on my monitor through the video card, but now through XP I cannot find that function. My video card is a Nvidia Riva TNT2 64MB card. I have a brightness adjustment in the monitor settings, but that is already adjusted at 100% and I need to adjust up a little bit more. Does that make sense? Does someone know where I can find this now that I am on XP?
Uninstall your NVidia display adapter. Run one of these to be sure all the driver files are removed: Driver Cleaner Professional or Nasty File Remover.
Then, install the most recent driver:
You'll find color, brightness, gamma adjustments in the advanced display properties and a separate adjustment for DirectX overlays, such as video player windows.
i cant get the function keys for the adjusting of brightness of my laptop screen. i can adjust it when it starts up but when the welcome message of windows xp starts i cant adjust it anymore. it's very annoying since i have to restart my laptop just to adjust the brightness using the function keys. anyone can help? please thanks.
i'm using Windows xp, Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family for my graphics.
these i think the most relevant for this issue.
btw, all the other function keys work. thanks again

Hi everyone, I have a pretty weird tech problem.
What happens is, whenever I adjust my monitor's brightness (from its physical buttons) the screen turns black. However the monitor is still on, the LED is still green and the computer is still responsive, the screen just turns black.
I can use the computer just fine, as long as I don't try to adjust anything. If I do want to change something, I have to change the values a little, then restart, change them again, restart until I have the values I want. This problem appeared when I tried to adjust the brightness by keeping the + button pressed down, so it increased quickly.
Is this indicative of a dying monitor ? It is pretty old, it's an LG L1750SQ, 17 inch LCD, it's over 4 years old. Also, I do not believe the video card to the problem, since it stays pretty cool, it has a good heatsink on it.

I just got the HP Pavilion 27xi IPS LED Backlit Monitor at work, working on a computer running Windows 10. I'm pretty tech-saavy, but I cannot figure out how to adjust the brightness! I've tried the F9/F10 function; doesn't work. I then thought it might be an issue with the driver, so I went to Settings -> Displays -> Advanced Display Settings -> Display Adaptor Properties -> Monitor (tab) -> Properties -> Driver (tab) -> Update Driver but got the "The best driver software for your device is already installed" message. Under the Settings -> Displays screen, there's no option for adapting the brightness and I've scoured the forums, but none of the solutions presented are working. Today I received my new monitor and I am not very happy with it.
I must adjust it so how, I tried to use Magic Tune but it seems my model is not supported.
When I look on the screen I feel a pressure in my head :P
So I will have to adjust it manually.
Maybe someone already have a monitor like me and can help me with some adjustments.
Not sure if you got a Manual so I added a link for you to Samsung's web page on the Monitor...link to Manual is near the bottom on the left...Section 3-1 is for setting up Optimal
Resolution. Section 4-1 is for setting up the Software and it does show Magic Tune.
There is a Trouble shooting guide in the same section as the Manual and there is a section for Magic Tune in the guide.
AOC 2353 monitor, on windows 7 has a recommended resolution of 1920 by 1080
when it is set here I notice even the desktop boots up quick and efficient. opposed to when it is set at 1600 by 900. which is best on the eyes.
problem with 1920 by 1080 is that the folders and print are far too minute to see.
this is with Intel onboard video, from the processor.
is there a way to expand the text and folders? browsers can be zoomed
would having a video card help?
If you go into the advanced display settings, you can increase the size of items and fonts and can "bold" the text.
I've got bad eyes, so I do this every time I set up one of my computers after I install the Windows operating system.
The native resolution for my 27" monitors is 1920 X 1080.
This is an example of what my desktop looks like after changing the display settings.
As you can see, the icons and text are noticeably larger and bolder than they would be from using the default settings.

I have been experiencing an intermittent problem with my monitor auto adjusting with increased frequency since this morning.
It is a 22 inch Belinea TFT.
What I have done :
Tried running at a lower res. - didn't help.
Went into Safe Mode - same.
In Device Manager I deleted one entry under Display Adapter for secondary X800 just leaving Primary Adapter.
Found the CD with original drivers and followed the instructions on reinstalling from a specified location ( hopefully the .inf) - it took a second or so.
So far ( few mins. or so ) it hasn't happened again.
I'd like to know where I might look to check it has been successfully applied so if need be I can try again.
Also - if there is anyway of disabling the auto adjust feature - since I could not find a way of doing so using the Monitor's OSD .... and this problem doesn't even appear in the accompanying manual under troubleshooting.
Furthermore Googling turned up very little.
Any suggestions appreciated.
* Edit * It has just occured again, so obviously unsuccessful.
Here are the instructions from the CD :
To install a BELINEA monitor for Windows XP with the BELINEA.INF file, please
proceed as follows:
1. Click "START"->"CONTROL PANEL"
2. Now, click on "DISPLAY" icon, then "SETTINGS"->"ADVANCED"->"MONITOR"->"PROPERTIES"->"DRIVER"->"DRIVER UPDATE".
3. Choose "Install from a list or specific location ( advanced )", than click "NEXT" button.
4. Choose the "Donīt Search. I will choose the driver to install" button and click "NEXT".
5. Click the "HAVE DISK" button and than the "BROWSE" button.
6. Choose the appropiate drive and directory in which you put the Belinea_xxx.inf, than click "OPEN" and "OK".
This ( part 7 ) does not appear - I get a dialog box stating ' The specified location does not contain information about your hardware.'
I have tried using the inf on the disc and from the desktop.
7. A list with all supported Belinea monitors will appear. Select your monitor type and double click "NEXT".
8. Click "FINISH" button and than the "CLOSE" button. Now the inf file for your monitor is installed.
Hi all, I'm having trouble with the monitor buttons on my Ideacenter A530. All of the buttons on the bottom of the monitor light up randomly during PC use (normally only a few are lit such as the power on the bottom left and the wireless one). The brightness is then toggled to either the lowest or highest setting on its own and doesn't let you adjust it back. Example: the brightness indicator on the top right gets stuck on the lowest brightness and although I drag the brightness back up, it goes down constantly until I do a cold restart. I don't think this has to do with automatic screen brightness or the ambient light sensor because that is disabled. Any ideas? My hunch is a hardware problem... ThanksRead other answers

Also, in the title of my question, how do I embolden the words, like every other post/thread ?

Their may be a 3rd party program that does what you want but I think it depends on the video card and monitor you have.
I have a 50,000 to 1 ratio contrast monitor and had to use the software management that came with it to adjust properly so it won't burn my eye balls.
What type of monitor do you have?
Hi! I have an ASUS VS238 monitor. I'm trying to change the brightness settings---way to bright. I push the contrast/brightness button on the bottom of the monitor and a little box pops up with brightness. I click on the up/down buttons on my keyboard and nada. Nothing happens. After a few seconds the box disappears. I've tried using the cursor, but as soon as it tries to enter the brightness box it disappears. I've tried the menu button, and the up down buttons don't work, but if I push the menu button again, it drops down to standard. I push the button again, and I get a box asking yes or no. It's set on no. I push again and it returns to standard, push again and I'm in a back and forth loop. How do I get the buttons to work? Any and all responses will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I know this is possible because you can adjust the brightness in games and then minimize the game and Windows will be brighter. I just need some more practical way of doing it.
I don't know if it'll matter but I've got an NVIDIA GeForce3 (Ver. 6.14) graphics card.
And no, I'm not buying a new monitor quite yet.

You may be able to adjust the brightness in the display properties of your video card. Go to Display in Control Panel and then to settings and Advanced. My ATi card has gamma and brightness settings, yours should have some sort of setting too.
I have a Mag Innovision LT765 LCD monitor that i got for free. The catch was that none of the buttons worked on it, and the brightness was stuck all the way up. It was fine with the integrated Intel Graphics on my computer because I could use the Intel software to turn the brightness down and it looked OK. However, today I upgraded my graphics card to a Radeon 9200SE. However, I no longer have software to turn down the brightness. I can barely read text, it is SO bright, I'm getting a headache just trying to read this. Anyone know of any good software I can use to change the brightness setting. I tried something, MagicView, i think, but it didnt work.
P.S the specs in my profile are more than 2 years old! Lol! Guess I havent been here in a while!
Try a new driver?
I recently attached a CTX 17" X701A LCD monitor to my computer (OS: Win2KPro). The monitor works fine at a resolution of 800x600 and a refresh rate of 75 Hertz (the same settings I used for my Viewsonic CRT). The display looks to me as if it were slightly concave, but I think that is an optical illusion because my Viewsonic screen was slightly convex and my eyes got used to that over the years. The text is slightly larger than that with the Viewsonic, but that is OK. However: I notice that the brightness of the screen varies from slightly darker in the upper left corner to slightly lighter in the lower right corner. Is this (1) another optical illusion, (2) a typical windows effect, (3) a typical property of LCD monitors, or (4) a defect? The variation is not enough to bother me and my wife does not notice it at all, but I am a little curious about what is going on.
