Preferred Solution: I can’t open internet explorer on my computer

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

I don't see anything suspicious here... When having problems like this, in most cases Security software is the cause. On some systems, certain Security applications just won't work properly. I see you are having Zonealarm and I have seen this issue with Zonealarm quite a lot.
Uninstall Zonealarm and let me know if that solved the problem.

Hey everyone. So my computer has been acting strange for a few of days now. I know about a week ago it got infected with Spy Sheriff (tricky little program) but I'm pretty sure I got it off. And I'm running Spybot right now and it's about half done and it hasn't found anything. As for the symptoms,1) I've been trying since I got infected with Spy Sheriff to run disk cleanup. And I know in the forum it said it could take minutes to hours but I ran it all last night (a total of approx. 10 hours I think) and it still doesn't go anywhere.2) My computer has been "freezing" alot. I'll only have two Internet programs open and they will both freeze, so I do the ctrl-alt-dlt thing and my CPU usage has gone from 3% to a 100% even though nothing has changed. And it's normally when I have something simple open like Yahoo and Google.3) The last time my computer "froze" I shut down the Internet window that wasn't responding and eventually the CPU usage went back down and I could use the other window again. But now I can't open another window of Internet Explorer at all. (which is why I'm doing this now. I'm going to try to restart my computer but it would be pretty tragic if I.E didn't open at all after that)I'm thinking more strange stuff has happened but now for the life of me I cant remember. Any ideas anyone? Oh and Im operating on Windows 2000 Professional.

What did you do or use to get rid of SpySheriff? Below is a link to instructions for removing SpySheriff. If you haven't run the Smitfraudfix I would suggest doing that. You probably have other infections, too. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/52345/how-to-remove-spyware-sheriff-and-antispylab/Also, install Super Antispyware. Whenever I start up my computer, the Internet Explorer wants to open. It of course is not connected to the Internet, so it says "page not found". Sometimes it opens up endless windows and I can't shut them down faster than they open.

I tried deleting Internet Explorer from my computer and seeing if that would stop it. But each time I turn on my computer again, it is back. It never goes away. I can close the IE window if it only opens one of them and my computer works fine after that, but it is always back at the next start-up.

I am currently using Windows XP professional and I use the Yahoo Browser for my internet access. I don't really use the Internet Explorer program itself.

How do I get rid of this annoying window that wants to open every time I turn my computer on??

A:Internet Explorer Wants To Open At Computer Start Up

dodiemom,First of all let me say Welcome to Bleeping Computer. My first impression is that you have IE in your start up menu somehow. Also I would highly discourage attempts at "uninstalling" IE. Especially if you are using Windows XP. IE is such an integral part of XP, that by attempting to uninstall IE you may corrupt you OS irreparably. You may use alternative browsers if you wish and just leave IE in place. One other thing I might advise is that Yahoo does not make or have a browser per se. The browser is still IE however "branded" with the Yahoo logo, and possibly has Yahoo tool bar attached. Underneath it all, it's still IE. To stop IE from opening at start up follow the instructions below. These instructions are assuming you are using Windows XP. If you are using another OS please post back.Start by cleaning out your Startup folder. Find it in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Startup, where username is your Windows logon name. Delete the shortcuts of any programs you don't want to run on start-up. As with any shortcuts, when you delete them, you're deleting only the shortcut, not the program itself. (You can also clear out the start-up items by going to Start > Programs > Startup, then right-clicking items you want to remove.)Be (IE Startup) SafeDa Bleeping Advisor, Animal

So on Thursday night my computer got a bunch of spyware, malware, things of that nature on it. I ran Spybot and did a virus scan and I was able to get everything off except 4 things. The next morning I was able to get the rest of the items off my computer but when I tried to get online neither Opera, nor FireFox could load any page.

I use a wireless connection and it says Im connected but I cant perform anything related to the internet. I did all the usual things that I normally would to fix the problem, but it didnt work this time. I connected my laptop directly to the modem but that didnt help. I thought I may have accidently deleted something important so I did a system restore and still nothing.

I ran winsockfix but whenever I do it keeps saying something likeError 53 and it was unsuccessful. Ive searched and tried everything I can find. Ive tried all the netsh winsock things in command prompt and netsh int ip resetand the other things related to that, but it did nothing.
Ive tried a couple other thing I cant remember at the moment but nothings worked. Any help would be appreciated.

Each time I attempt to open Internet Explorer (IE 9). My Vista Desktop restarts. Also it will not find updates.

Any ideas?

A:Each time I try to open Internet Explorer, the computer restarts.

Hello JSW,

What do you mean by the desktop restarts?  Can you please clarify and post screenshot if possible?
Do you get any error msgs? (e.g. windows explorer has stopped working, Internet explorer has stopped working and must be closed....)

NOTE: IE9 is the last IE browser that is supported in Vista, and it doesn't play well with many sites anymore, as it is outdated. (Gmail, for one doesn't support IE9)

Windows Update still supplies security updates for IE9.  Are you saying you can't use WU?

I would recommend using Google Chrome, especially since you cannot install IE10 or 11 with Vista.

Let me know

Mark.

Firstly hello to everyone. Admin - Please move to correct section if in wrong place.
I checked my computer for viruses with NOD yesterday. It found a virus called Genetik trojan in WIN32. It also found problems with hg1.dll fil. It asked me if I wanted to delete it although other programs may use it. Stupidly I deleted it. Now for some reason, I can not open Internet Explorer, Control Panel, My Computer or Recycle Bin. I click on the icons in the desktop but nothing happens.
I'm assuming there is a problem that is based out of Internet Explorer since those other programs use the same type look. I've tried d/ling Internet Explorer 7 but it has not fixed the problem.
Can anyone help me out please? I am a teacher and use my computer daily in lesson - but now I've really messed it up. I can get access to the internet using Mozilla.
Thanks,
Dma.

A:Can not open Internet Explorer, Control Panel, My Computer in xp

Hi and welcome to TSF.
HG1.dll is not a Windows file so it is likely that an infection has caused your problems. Your best bet would be to run a Deckard's System Scan but this is going to be difficult if you can't access Internet Explorer. First of all, let's see if we can correct your system files using the System File Checker. Only do this if you have SP2 on your installation disc. Otherwise you will need to slipstream SP2 to the installation disc. Follow these steps (courtesy of Chauffeur2)

Insert the Windows? XP CD in your drive. (Hold down the Shift Key to prevent it from starting.)

Go Start > Run ...in the box type in sfc /scannow ?please take note of the space between the sfc and the /.

This is the System File Checker...it will scan all the Windows? core system files to ensure that they are in their respective correct places, and if not replace them from the CD.

During the scan you may be asked to Insert the CD, if this happens just go retry and let it do its thing.

One important point: While sfc is running, it is not advisable to do any other work, or have any browsers/programs running on the computer, until the scan is complete. (This process will generally take around 45-65 minutes to complete).

Once finished, remove the CD and reboot your machine...all should be "Normal" (hopefully).

For some reason, all of a sudden I could not open Internet Explorer, Control Panel, My Computer or Recycle Bin. I click on the icons in the desktop but nothing happens. I've tried d/ling Internet Explorer Service Pack 6 but I run into some kind of error saying that it can't find all the components to install. Can anyone help me out? Let me know if you need more info. I've run a bunch of adware and spyware stuff too.

A:Can not open Internet Explorer, Control Panel, My Computer, etc.

Let us have a look-see.........

Please download HijackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Double click on the program to run it.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Get HijackThis Analyzer and save it to the same folder as the hijackthis.log file. Run HijackThis Analyzer and type in y if you agree. The result.txt file will open up in Notepad. Copy the whole result.txt log and post it in the forum. We do not need the original hijackthis.log (unless we ask for it). Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

I am having a similar problem, only worse. I am trying to fix my MIL's machine. Windows XP--Upon login there are the three user accounts and all appear to be administrators, plus there is an official "administrator". No passwords on any. After I login on any of the accounts there is a blank screen--no icons, taskbar or start menu. I can gain access to some things via the task manager. It has AVG on it and there are a number of items in the vault it will not let me delete. I ran CCleaner, Super Anti-Spyware, xp registry cleaner and sd fix. All have done a number of things. I had never ran CCleaner before and was impressed with that. Anyway, even in safe mode I can't run malware or hijack this--so I don't know if I have gotten everything or not. I hope so. She had downloaded Incredimail and Magentic. I finally got all that off--primarily via the registry. I did the sfc scannow, above, and I don't know what it corrected, if anything.

there are several concerns. Obviously not being able to have a desktop with icons, start menu and task bar is the biggest problem. Also, a tidbit is that I cannot get "explorer.exe" to show in the processes on the task manager--I think that could be a major contributor to the overall problem. I have verified that it is in hard drive in the windows folder--one is an application with just over 1,000 kb. It doesn't have the same icon however that my own compter has. Also, there are a number of things I cannot... Read more

Can you download and unzip HijackThis to a permanent folder of its own?

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

Run it and select "Scan", then save the Scanlog and copy/paste the results here.

Also this has helped some people with similar IE problems. Try going to the Internet Options > Advanced menu (through the Control Panel applet) and uncheck "enable third party browser extensions"

I am running Windows XP Home SP2 with the latest updates on a Pentium 1.8 GHz Dell 2350. Recently, IE and Eudora quit working. (No new programs had been installed.) IE will not load any pages, it just freezes. Eudora reports an "unhandled exception" and exits. "My Computer" generally will not open, but occasionally after searching several minutes it will function perfectly with every disk/link opening instantly. (I can bypass the "My Computer" button with the "Run" command to instantly open any drive. Using this method, the Control Panel may still open slowly.) Using Task Manager, no process generally appears to be using a lot of CPU resources. Also, "My Computer" and Eudora function perfectly in Safe Mode.

I did run the Panda online scanner. After 6 hours, it reported 37 potential "viruses or spyware" but did not give an option to fix any. I neglected to save the log file at that time--sorry. Since then, I have downloaded and run the following antivirus/spyware detection programs without finding any problems other than tracking cookies (removed all cookies): SpyBot Search & Destroy, AVG Free 8.0 full scan, BitDefender 10 Antivirus full scan, the latest Windows malware removal tool, sfc\ scannow (did not run with XP CD in drive), and Windows Defender. Hi! I keep getting an Internet Explorer Security warning box that says: "A website wants to open web content using this program on your computer." Beneath that message it reads: This program will open outside of protected mode. Protected mode helps protect your computer. If you do not trust this website, please do not open this program. Then, below that message it says Name: Adobe Flash Player; Publisher: Adobe Systems Incorporated. You can click "Allow" or "Don't Allow." I've been clicking "Don't Allow" because I think it may be a virus. This message pops up whenever I try to navigate to a different website - they are trusted sites such as Google or MSN. I'm just not sure how to get rid of it. I have run SuperAntiSpyware which found some threats then removed them, but I keep getting this message. I also ran Malwarebytes but that found nothing.

My computer is running really slow, and I keep getting this message. I followed the directions in the preparation guide and am posting and attaching my logs that Bleeping Computer recommended. Thanks for any help you can give me!

I have a windows 7 msi laptop that until recently has had no issues.
The past several weeks however, Internet Explorer closes unexpectedly multiple times when I am online. Also, I cannot open PDF files and Adobe Reader will not reinstall. iTunes won't open, and pictures won't open when I double-click them.

No error messages have shown up...the programs simply just do not open. I have the latest version of iTunes, and I am unable to download any version of a PDF file reader, but I previously had Nuance.

I have NO CLUE what to do or how to begin trying to resolve this issue, and most of my work files are PDF so this is becoming a huge problem...please help.

A:Internet Explorer closes unexpectedly, Adobe Reader won't open, iTunes won't open....

Hello and welcome to TSF,
The first step would be to try a different browser and see if your online problems keeps happening. If you are a hardcore IE fan, see if there is an update for it. As far as your pictures and files are concerned, it might need a simple solution like Disk Defrag. Many people overlook this, but hey it works! You can also do a Disk Cleanup (also built into Windows) which clears some unnecessary junk.
Good Luck!

Hi All,
I've been racking my brain trying to see what is going on and I cannot for the life of me figure it out. So I was hoping that someone on here might be able to help. Here's my situation. As I mentioned in the title something is going wrong with internet explorer and it opens in the task manager but is not open on the screen (although I do often see a little flash of something like a window popping up every now and then but only a flash then it's gone). Also I will click on normal links (like cnn.com after searching google for "cnn" and it will send me to some random website, usually trying to sell me something). Finally after some invesitgation it looks like there is a false iexplorer.exe file on my computer that got there somehow, and I think is causing issues. Oh and my windows firewall and symantec have been disabled. I have scanned with malwarebytes, adaware, spybot, and a few others with some each of them finding things but nothing has been fixed.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance,

My computer (OS Windows XP Home) has been running rather slow and recently I have not been able to access any internet sites. I have successfully connected to more than one wireless network and had 100% signal strength. When opening internet explorer, my preset homepage has disappeared and internet explorer is attempting to connect to errordns.com in the lower left corner of the window. The address bar remains blank. The explorer window then continues to constantly connect to errordns.com as if I were clicking Go on the right side of the address bar numerous times and overwhelming internet explorer. I am not able to access anything else which requires an internet connection, such as limewire or my AIM icon. I have attempted to change my homepage address in the internet connections options but the same repeating connection to errordns.com occurs. I do not have an up-to-date antivirus system currently. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

Sometimes I will have 4-5 browsers open at once. I will then close all except one of them.

When I go into task manager, Processes, there will still be 4-6 "iexplorer.exe" processes open.

I don't want this. Why do they remain open after closing the browsers?

Is there a fix for this?

A:IE8: Multiple internet explorer processes open with one browser open

Do they stay there until you restart the computer or do they go away after you close all of the browsers? Also when you open more browsers again does more processes come up as well as the other already there?

Please do not edit the logs, though I'm sure you meant well. To rid yourself of those O18 entries, you can uninstall Logitech's Desktop Messenger. It's not really necessary.

From their site:

Quote:

If you choose to disable to uninstall the Logitech Desktop Messenger you will not receive any messages about updates to your products. However we will be posting on in the downloads sections of the Logitech site. So if you choose to monitor the Logitech website as an alternative, you will be able to access the latest updates.

It should be located at C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt

Please post it.

Please run Deckard's System Scanner once again, this time using these instructions:

Click the Windows 'Start' button > Select 'Run' - then copy/paste this into the run box & click OK
"C:\Documents and Settings\Michael Beuhler\Desktop\ZonedOut\dss.exe" /config Click on "Check All"

Click Scan!

Im trying to change the hard drive in my Hp laptop. Serial number: 5CD4132XOK. I?ve tried calling Hp for support but apparently they don?t support that laptop anymore.

To get into the laptop, you first have to remove keyboard, followed by the plastic cover around the keyboard. It?s attached by clips, which unclip most of the way around the laptop. But, it gets stuck at the Cd tray and the USB socket next to the Cd tray. If I try to force it, the USB socket starts to come up as well. I?ve checked multiple time if I left any screws in and have watched tutorials to see if I?ve missed something. What could be holding it together? My dad has disassembled it before so it isn?t soldered together. I can?t contact him to ask how he did it so I?m hoping one of you guys might have an idea.

Thanks for your time and consideration.
Kind regards,

I have an older Dell running XP. Would like to wipe the operating system and do a clean install but have some programs I no longer have install disks for so I can't. Tried to complete the Preperation Guide. Defrogger worked fine. DDS would not run and it just gave me an output file full of gibberish. I tried to attach the text file but it was too large. Since DDR wouldn't run, I downloaded Hijackthis and have posted the log file instead. GMER ran fine, (took a long time) and I've attached the log file.

Any help getting this machine cleaned up will be appreciated. Thanks!!

I'm not sure if this looks the same in IE6, but in Internet Options > Connection > Settings, is the Dialup Networking connection you are using the one selected there? When you launch IE, the dialup adapter should run.

Hello,

Im having trouble with a programme called CDisplay, which essentially is a JPEG viewer for reading digital comics. Anyway, as of today it simply will not work. When I tried to open a file I got a message saying that the programme couldnt be found. However, the CDisplay icons are still on my desktop and in All Programmes on the Start menu.

I then searched for the programme and Windows (I'm running XP, by the way) found the relevant folders. However, when I so much as click to highlight anything to do with CDisplay (folders, icons; and not even going so far as to try and open them) the computer freezes for several minutes until I get an unresponsive programme error message.

I tried to uninstall the programme (using both Windows and Revo Uninstaller) but again received messages that it couldnt be found. I then tried reinstalling CDisplay but received a message saying Error 23: Cyclic Redundancy Error or something very similar.

At first I thought this might have been caused by a problem with the external hard drive that I use to store my digital comics. However, the external drive (and CDisplay) works fine on another computer, as does everything else on the drive (videos, MP3s) that does not have to do with CDisplay. Plus CDisplay is installed directly on my laptop, and all of the comic files work fine when viewed with a different programme.

So, does anyone have any idea what is going on and how I can solve this problem? Any help would be much appreci... Read more

Today Ive extracted it without any problem. And started to work with them, but some of them doesnt open. I understand that the problem isnt in my Illustrator but in archive or in these files. Tried to re-extract them the same problem. Extraction is OK, some files are bad. So I think that problem is in the files. May be there is some way to recover them? Hope for your help.

A:[SOLVED] A Programme Has Disappeared – Won’t Open / Can’t Uninstall Etc.

I would say to go to their site and ask this question in their forum, however their site says this software is no longer maintained and no one is answering the forum questions.
If Revo won't uninstall then Delete all files of CDisplay in Program Files and Desktop, do a Search/All Files and Folders/Included Hidden Files and delete all instances of CDisplay.Empty Recycle bin. Then go to Start/Run and type Regedit. In the registry editor go to the tool bar to Edit/Find and in the Find What box type CDisplay hit Find Next. it will stop at a registry string, hit the Delete key on your keyboard then hit Enter to accept the deletion then hit the F3 key to continue searching the registry. Continue to do the last 3 steps until you get the message Finished Searching the Registry. Reboot and try reinstalling.

My Sisters net book developed a fault within four days of setting up, in so far that access to the internet was not possible. Each time a site was typed in the error message could not open page would come up. I started the net book up in safe mode, by using MSCONFIG and changing the boot up with network but left all services etc running. Once booted I started the wifi connection and started IE11 and it loaded pages correctly. Reverting back to normal boot and the fault re-occurred.
I did notice however if I opened IE or Chrome before the net book had fully booted (started all back ground programs) I could access the internet for a short while before getting the unable to load page error.
Windows update and Netflix both work correctly.

Another problem with the laptop was the right click context menus. Some of them did not work and would make the laptop freeze for a short while. A thread on this site pointed to context handlers and in particular to one from Norton. Using the method quoted in the thread I was able to get the right click menus to open correctly.

I have always hated Norton and decided to remove it from my sisters net book. After removal and a re-start IE11 and Chrome now work correctly.

Prior to removing Norton I noticed that the context handler was built on the 26th of December 2014 and the fault on this net book started around the 29th.

A:Internet Explorer 11 and Chrome can not open internet page

Hey mate,

glad you got it working. Make sure you removed every trace on your computer by using the Norton removal tool: https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/...rProfile_en_us
- otherwise it might conflict with future antivirus programs. The built in Windows Defender works okay, but it is not great at catching all malware. Unfortunately, some of the other free antivirus programs have interfered too much with the Windows system, including Avast!, Kaspersky, etc. I actively use Defender, and give a manual scan of Malwarebytes.org 's free malware-removal program to compliment it. You might consider giving it a try (it is not an antivirus program, just a malware removal kit).

Another great way of ensuring fewer malware get loaded onto the computer is to always make sure windows is updated with the latest.

Cheers

I've been having this problem for about a year now, and I just can't get it fixed. Whenever I try to open Internet Explorer it just flashes for less than a second, and then automatically closes. Also, I can't open Internet Options. I try to click on it from the Control Panel, but nothing happens. I try to enter inetcpl.cpl in Run, but nothing happens.

However, i've read on some other forums and threads here about looking for "inetcpl.cpl" in the System32 folder, and it is NOT there on my computer. I really don't know what to do now.
EDIT: After using Microsoft's Fix It program, inetcpl.cpl is back in the System32 folder, but nothing happens when I click on it. I tried to access it through the browsing fuction of Run, but it doesn't sure up there. Maybe that's normal, but I thought I should note it anyway.

NOTE: If this belows in a different section, please move it. I wasn't really sure.
