T450s Internal Battery Discharges First

Q: T450s Internal Battery Discharges First

My T450s has recently started discharging the internal battery first rather than the removable battery. I can't recall when this started to happen but I think it happened when I updated the BIOS to the latest version currently available. Anyone have any insight if this is an issue with other models and a fix? This is rather annoying. I have updated all of the other drivers with the System Update utility from Lenovo. Machine Type: 20BW

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi everyone, Title says it all, I know this topic of discharging internal battery first has been brought up a lot, and that the reason behind it is this: The T470s are designed to drain the battery with least wear first so as to degrade both batteries equally and prolong the laptop's overall battery life. However, as I'm using a new 61++ battery, clearly somethig is going wrong somewhere as the year old internal battery cannot be in better condition than the brand new external.https://gyazo.com/6c12f3f40514599d04d852a8589189ab Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi, I am using a t440s thinkpad with Arch linux installed on it.  The external battery was working fine at first but recently it refuses to discharge first.  The internal battery discharges then shuts the computer down when its empty leaving the external battery at full charge. Running acpi -V on my computer it outputs the following: Battery 0: Unknown, 100%
Battery 0: design capacity 6039 mAh, last full capacity 5672 mAh = 93%
Battery 1: Discharging, 98%, 02:16:50 remaining
Battery 1: design capacity 1924 mAh, last full capacity 1767 mAh = 91%Battery 0 is my external battery and is labeled as unknown.  I updated the BIOS to the latest version and this did not fix this issue.

This just happened to me again this morning. The third time in 3 months. I open my laptop and the three lights on the keboard (FN/Mute/Microphone) are all on. The power button does nothing at all. Suggested solutions that I've tried:- Insert a paperclip into the small hole on the bottom of the laptop and press the button with it.- Press the power button 11 times, then hold for 30 seconds on the 12th time. The only solution that has worked for me is to open up the laptop and disconnect/reconnect the internal battery. I now cannot trust that my ThinkPad will turn on when I need it. This could be bad for business if it happens at an inopportune time. I need a solution. Any ideas?

A:T450s won't wake. Power button does nothing. Only solution is to disconnect internal battery.

I am not confident of these suggestions, but would suggest that you try the following:: confirm you have the latest available BIOS, drivers, and operating system,Reset BIOS to the factory defaults and then make any needed adjustments to the BIOS settings.

Hi there, I've got an Alienware 15 R2 that I bought 2 years ago. Everything worked fine until about 6 months ago when the battery began disconnecting and rapidly discharging (about 2hrs from full to shutdown) whenever I open any games.
I've searched everywhere for a solution. Diagnostics show battery health to be fine, I've tried different charging cables (mine is currently 240w and was the cable I received with the laptop) and I've attempted to reduce all processes to the bare minimum.
My fiance and I bought a matching pair of laptops and the other seems to work without issue. The only notable difference we've found was my BIOS having been updated recently while the other is an older version.

I have a Toshiba P25-S509 laptop that's a few years old but still runs pretty good. The problem that I having now is that it seems to only run on battery even if the AC adapter is plugged in. This is one of those 10lb giant laptops that was marketed as a desk top replacement. That was a joke and I fell for it.
I get about 50 minutes of run time and have to be religious about recharging. I purchased another adapter/charger and a new battery and the problem still exists. Strangely enough however, once in a while I'll see the charging light come on while it's running and i will think that my problem is solved but it doesn't last for long. If any one has any advice on how to fix this situation I would appreciate it. I may have to get a new laptop and I can assure you that it will not be a Toshiba. I would also appreciate any recommendations on a good reliable brand.

Thx in advance,

VC

Hi

My NB520 has recently developed a problem.
It was working fine and i charged it up to 99% then when i removed the charger, a message appears saying ''0:05 of battery remaining (99%)'' and then ''computer will suspend very soon unless it is plugged in''.

So even though it is registering the 99% charge it thinks there is only 5 minutes of operation time left.
Is this a battery problem or a motherboard problem?

Thanks

Hi

For me it looks like a battery malfunction?maybe you could try to calibrate the battery several times in order to increase the performance but not quite sure if this would help in this case?

To calibrate the battery you should discharge the battery until it would be fully empty. Then charge it again until the battery indicator would switch to blue or green (this depends on model you have).

If this would not help, I would recommend testing new battery.

Hello,  I bought this model of laptop 2 weeks ago and I found out strange problem, which I also found on HP forum, so definitely it is serious issue - every second or third day (at least for this first 2 weeks of using laptop) my laptop's battery is arround 5% discharged during night. To be precise, when I finish my work at night (during work power jack is plugged in and battery is 100% full), I completely shut down laptop (Windows button/Power/Shut Down, so no hibernation or anything similar, just standard shutdown of device) and I unplug it from electricity. When I power on laptop in the morning the battery is around 95%. So, basically during night while device isn't working at all it still somehow drains for around 5% . I am afraid that if I don't solve this problem it will get worse and worse, and after couple of months of using, battery can discharge even more during night.  As mentioned before, I am using Windows 10 64-bit system. I am also using my old laptop and this situation has never happened during many years of working on it. Looking forward to hear from you.

I had a similar issue with my old battery? Now it?s running only 2min?

Hello,

This laptop is about four and a half years old and recently the battery has started acting up. The battery discharges from a full charge in about 15-20 minutes.

Another problem I had with the battery was a 601 error at bootup - I got this error in the BIOS screen and it states that the battery has fallen below its optimal charge capacity.

I managed to "fix" this problem with a BIOS update. I then ran the powercfg utility and it shows that the battery is charging fully,

Battery:Battery Information
Battery ID 14089 2010/12/01Hewlett-PackardPrimary
Manufacturer Hewlett-Packard
Serial Number 14089 2010/12/01

Design Capacity 11502
Last Full Charge 11502

So can anyone tell me why the battery is discharging so quickly? Am running Windows 7 Home Premium in Power Saver mode and nothing is running in the background, and the only apps are a couple of browser windows.

Thank you in advance.

My new Toshiba Satellite Z830 10J ultrabook with Win7 64bit,. all updates, works fine and shows no deficiencies, there is however one strange exception.

When the battery is fully charded and i "pull the plug", the system runs on the battery for sometimes more than 5 hours, so i assume the battery cycle is ok.

When the battery now is fully charged again and i SHUT DOWN the system and do not use it for a few days,
then the battery is totally DISCHARGED to 0% and the system will not boot, until i plug it in.

This phenomenon occurs in less than a week. So: charging the batrery to 100%, switching off the system, pulling the plug, wanting to re-use the system after 7 days, yields to 0% battery charge.

Is there any specific reason for this?

greetings

Hello Roland

It is well known that battery looses capacity over night or after few days but maybe several percent or maximal 20% but it is not known to me that battery will be complexly empty.

Is some external device connected to USB ports when the notebook is off or notebook is placed on the desk without any connected devices?

Please enter also BIOS settings and disable every option that can be related to this issue. I don?t have this new notebook and BIOS is not known to me but check please all BIOS settings. Disable wake =up on LAN or USB sleep and charge.

My old original battery discharges in 30 minutes and I purchased an original new one from Toshiba authorized dealer in Croatia.

After several days of charging and discharging, the new genuine Toshiba battery discharges 1.5 hours of normal use without powering any external devices nor optical drive.

Toshiba specification for this model of Portege states that battery should last approximately 4 hours.
How I can get the battery replaced when local dealer stated that he can not guaranty battery life and that the new battery came directly from authorized Toshiba parts distributor in Europe?

A:Portege M700 new genuine Battery discharges in aproximately 1.5 hours

> After several days of charging and discharging, the new genuine Toshiba battery discharges 1.5 hours of normal use without powering any external devices nor optical drive.

The battery should be calibrated properly. This means that you should charge and discharge the battery until it?s fully empty. This should be repeated several times?

Furthermore the battery working times depends on notebook usage? using notebook with max display brightness or running applications which needs full CPU, GPU and HDD performance would decrease the battery working time.

I have a Flex 3 that is only 4 months old and notice that even when the laptop is totally off (powered down, no lights on, not hibernate or sleep) after a day or two the batter charge upon bootup has gone down significantly. I am talking a reduction of say 40%. I am under warranty and I have to run this "Battery gauge reset" routine and do a few other checks before they replace the battery.  Although I can't imagine how looking at windows power options can impact what the battery draw is while the unit is OFF and windows is not running....but guess they have to go through their script. Anyway my question is on this Battery Gauge reset.  I have read things where this takes all night or something and people have to turn sleep mode off on their laptop? That is not in the official instructions so for those that have had this issue or run the reset do you just "press the button" or do I need to make sure the laptop stays awake. Also, what is it actually doing?? Is this type of battery drain a known issue?  To me it sure seems like just a bad battery....Thanks,BJBBJB

I've spent the better part of 2 days trying to figure this out for my boss, she's mucked up her PC and I'm drawing blanks. She reported to me that her keyboard stopped working, and external keyboards "would not sync" either.  She works remotely, so I had her send me the PC.  Upon receiving, I was able to get USB keyboards to work, where she'd tried 3 (one brand new) and failed.   However - I still can't solve the laptop's internal keyboard.  It appears to be entirely unresponsive, but the FN light does work, so it's getting power.  When opening the on-screen keyboard, I see that: CNTRL and ALT are being recognized.  Escape is acting as the function lock/unlock.  B, S and K keys are also being recognized, but as other characters, like Scroll lock and ALT+Scroll lock.  No other keys are recognized. I've checked languages, deleted and reinstalled drivers, system restored to an older point where the keyboard did work, and a few other things I've read suggestions on, to no avail.  I'd say by now I've been through 15 different posts from Windows, Lenovo, other support sites, and have had no luck with any suggested remedy.  Anyone have any better/other ideas?  We're now out of the T450S, only have T440S in stock, and considering the improved touchpad of the T450, and her expanded memory, I don't want to downgrade unless absolutely necessary.  I'd like to fix the 450. Thanks

Hi all, My 2-year old Lenovo T450s is experiencing charging problems. If I plug in the battery charger, it starts charging for a second, it then stops, then the cycle starts again. Needless to say that none of the batteries (neither the built-in nor the external) charge properly. I tried to: (1) buy a new battery charger, (2) unplug the external battery leaving the internal plugged in, (3) unplug the built-in (internal) battery leaving the external plugged in. None of these solutions worked. I then unplugged both batteries and plugged the battery charger, and the laptop works. What do you think? Is it a hardware problem (perhaps related to the motherboard - I can't think of anything else)? Is it a software problem? Thank you in advance for your time! Best, Paolo

Hi, I like that my T450s has 2 batteries. But the thing that bothers me is that the removable battery is drained first entirely prior to using the built-in battery. I've noticed that this increases the "cycle count" of the removable battery as essentially the battery has been completely used. In other laptops this is not a problem as they come with 1 battery and the cells are depleted uniformly.  This has only become a concern for me when I want to use the laptop for long hours without a charger. This would increase the cycle count of the removable battery if done on a daily basis. By doing so will I be ruining the battery life ?  Pls let me know, thanks.

A:T450s - How many cycles can the removable battery ...

Not sure, but I guess this is a bit by design, True the external is wearing more by having more cycles, but this also means that the internal one has a increased live time. The external one will be the first to wear, but is also the more easy one to replace .I already have 2 externals with my laptop. But I get your point and I'm curious about it too. Depleting a battery fully will wear a Li-ion more then not fully depleting it (if my study's where right that is). So it might be true that the less wear on the internal battery does not compare equally to the extra wear caused to the external battery. On the other hand, the extra wear might not be that great to worry about. And this dubble battery design does give us the awesome feature to hot-swap external battery's (which I use quite more that I thought I would).

I'm dual booting Windows 10 and Ubuntu 18.04 on my T450s. About a year ago, when I first replaced the removable battery with a new extended 6-cell external battery, I was getting 12-14 hours of battery life off a single charge. Now I'm getting about 5-6 hours on both OSs. I checked the battery health on LInux via: $ upower -i /org/freedesktop/UPower/devices/battery_BAT1and got the info that the external battery had only lost a few percent of its original capacity (can't give exact figures cos writing this from Windows). My general use cases are running firefox, mail clients (geary/postbox), translation/word processing software (memoy ms word, libreoffice). Main CPU usage usually seems to be Windows background processes. What can I do to resolve this? Recalibrate the batteries (although I'm struggling to find tools to do that on the t450s)? Reinstall Windows and Ubuntu?

I'm not sure how helpful this is but... it's all I've got...if you boot to Windows 10 and run the Vantage tool you can do a draw-down test. This wil reset the battery gauge, and having done that it testyou can then compare the present "Full Charge" capacity vs. the design capacity.

Many thanks in advance  When on battery, the Internal Battery discharges First, then, the External Battery. I got the machine around a week ago, and my internal battery has already gone through 8 cycles (when reviewed through the Thinkpad Vantage App). Yet, the external batter has only gone through 1 cycle. Given the ease of replacing the external battery, and that Thinkpad advertised a "hot swap" battery bridge feature, I do not find a rational for the current discharging behavior. There is a relevant posts on Reddit, but draining both of my batteries does not get things back to normal.External link: https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/83vqj5/t480_internal_battery_draining_first/

After a long journey, both batteries in my T450s were flat, and this morning when I plugged in and booted up I got the message that "The battery installed is not supported by this system and will not charge".  True to its word, one of the batteries does not seem to be charging.  These are the original batteries which came with the laptop when bought new from Lenovo.  They have performed well since I received it, no problems to date, and no obvious reduction in performance.  How can I get the battery charging again? Thanks for your help.

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T450S laptop has two batteries. Internal Battery 1 is working perfectly fine. HW Info shows the following Info:Power Status: On AC PowerCurrent Capacity: 19570 mWh (100.0 %)Current Voltage: 11.936 V Removable external battery has been on 0% and charging for a weeksUnique ID: SANYO45N1775Designed Capacity: 23200 mWhFull Charged Capacity: 16570 mWhWear Level: 28.6 %Power Status: Charging Critical On AC PowerCurrent Capacity: 0 mWh (0.0 %)Current Voltage: 5.123 V I started hearing the USB Connect/Discount Sound when I recover laptop from Stand By mode approximately the same time that the battery stopped charging. I have no external devices (hard drive, printer, mouse, USB...) connected. I some times get the message "Battery 2 Not installed Message in a white pop up window. I have tried the following but the problem still persist1) Fresh Installed Windows 10.0.17134 Build 171342) Updated to the latest Bios Firmware3) Updated Lenovo Energy Management software but got a message saying Windows has the latest Drivers (However Battery Driver says Microsoft 2006)4) Updated Battery Firmware but got a message saying nothing to update5) Installed Lenovo Vintage Software & Reseted the battery but got an Error. Could it be a Windows Update problem since I am hearing Device (USB) connect/disconnect sound & the battery issue happen approximately the same time?Any suggestions? Buying a new battery would be my last option

I finally upgraded from the X201 to X270. This is a refurbished mahcine from lenovo. My internal battery discharges very fast. I ran through the utilities. I was on for 2.5 hours surfing with Google Chrome and only had 20% left. Is this normal? If not, I will need to buy an extended battery. My X201 lifespan is much better.

At the power manager interface, I can recognize just the removable battery.Do you have please any suggestions to activate my internal battery ?  Thank you.
