Malwarebytes starts 'Bug Bounty' program after discovery of vulnerabilities

Q: Malwarebytes starts 'Bug Bounty' program after discovery of vulnerabilities

Source: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Vulnerability Disclosure

In early November, a well-known and respected security researcher by the name of Tavis Ormandy alerted us to several security vulnerabilities in the consumer version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Within days, we were able to fix several of the vulnerabilities server-side and are now internally testing a new version (2.2.1) to release in the next 3-4 weeks to patch the additional client-side vulnerabilities. At this time, we are still triaging based on severity.

The research seems to indicate that an attacker could use some of the processes described to insert their own code onto a targeted machine. Based on the findings, we believe that this could only be done by targeting one machine at a time.

However, this is of sufficient enough a concern that we are seeking to implement a fix. Consumers using the Premium version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware should enable self-protection under settings to mitigate all of the reported vulnerabilities.

Unfortunately, vulnerabilities are the harsh reality of software development. In fact, this year alone, our researchers have found and reported several vulnerabilities with other software. A vulnerability disclosure program is one way to accelerate the discovery of these vulnerabilities and empower companies like Malwarebytes to fix them.

I?d like to take this opportunity to launch the Malwarebytes Bug Bounty program which I hope will encourage other security researchers to responsibly disclose vulnerabilities within Malwarebytes software.

I?d also like to take this opportunity to apologize. While these things happen, they shouldn?t happen to our users.

We are taking steps like the Bug Bounty program as well as building automatic vulnerability finding software to mitigate any potential for a future vulnerability. In addition, our engineers have used this discovery to create new processes and methodologies that will help us to continue to scrutinize our own code, identify any weak lines or processes and to build additional tests and checkpoints into our ongoing development cycle.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to e-mail [email protected] and we?ll get back to you.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

as of today , AVG has opened up their own bug bounty hunter program . they challange hackers if they can find critical bugs in the following area's :

We are interested in security related bugs only:
- Remote code execution
- Local privilege escalation: e.g. situations when AVG allows a non-privileged user to gain Administrator or System rights
- Denial of service (DoS): e.g. crashes of AVG processes or BSOD caused by AVG drivers
- Self Protection bypass: e.g. causing corruption of AVG files, registry keys or running processes or making key components of AVG product nonfunctional
- other security related bugs with a severe impact on the system security or stability

discription of the program :

We appreciate all security concerns brought forth and are constantly striving to keep on top of the latest threats. Being pro-active rather than re-active to emerging security issues is a fundamental belief at AVG Technologies. Every day new security issues and attack vectors are created. AVG Technologies strives to keep abreast on the latest state-of-the-art security developments by working with security researchers and companies. We appreciate the community's efforts in creating a more secure world.

Starting this fall, Apple will pay up to $200,000 for iOS and iCloud bugs

As part of a security presentation given at this year's Black Hat conference, Apple today announced that it would be starting up a bug bounty program in the fall. The program will reward security researchers who uncover vulnerabilities in Apple's products and bring them to the company's attention. Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and many other companies have offered bug bounty programs for some time now, but this is Apple's first.

For now, Apple is intentionally keeping the scope of the program small. It will initially be accepting bug reports from a small group of a few dozen security researchers it has worked with in the past. For now, bounties are only being offered for a small range of iDevice and iCloud bugs. The full list is as follows:
Secure boot firmware components: Up to $200,000 (~150,000)
Extraction of confidential material protected by the Secure Enclave: Up to $100,000.
Execution of arbitrary code with kernel privileges: Up to $50,000.
Access from a sandboxed process to user data outside of that sandbox: Up to $25,000.
Unauthorized access to iCloud account data on Apple servers: Up to $50,000.
As the program continues and Apple works the, um, bugs out of its processes, the company will expand the list of eligible security researchers as well as the list of hardware and software bugs for which bounties are offered.

Researchers who want to claim the bounties will need... Read more

The convergence of connectivity technology and the automotive industry is creating a more enjoyable driving experience. Features such as self-diagnostics, keyless entry and ignition is becoming commonplace. However, they can also introduce IT security issues.

Last month we learned that the Mitsubishi Outlander can be easily broken into by attackers exploiting security weaknesses in the setup that allows the car to be remotely controlled via an app. Last week a researcher unveiled two vulnerabilities in the BMW ConnectedDrive web portal/web application.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles bug bounty
Today, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles launched a public bug bounty program on the Bugcrowd platform to enhance the safety and security of its vehicles and connected services.

?Bugcrowd was chosen based on the scale of their existing programs, the pool of researchers already engaged in their programs and their model for triage and recognition of identified vulnerabilities,? Titus Melnyk, senior manager of security architecture, FCA US LLC, told Help Net Security.

Hi, a friend has asked me to look at a machine which according to her 'when I go onto the internet, does not work'. I have little more to go on than that, but my first thoughts after checking device manager (all is ok) was to check for a virus. I've downloaded on another machine the latest version of MBAM and installed this fine. When I try to execute it though, it tells me the database is 70 days out of date and if I click yes to update, the program stops. No messages or anything, just stops. If I don't update it presents me with the main MBAM screen, but when I click 'scan', the program again just stops.

Grateful for any suggestions.

A:Malwarebytes auto starts scans after restart

I think this has to do with Malwarebytes now using the "RunOnce" registry key. This causes programs to run whenever the computer reboots or a user logs in.

Run and RunOnce Registry Keys (Windows)

I first noticed this a couple of weeks ago when I installed Malwarebytes 1.70 beta. (Never had this issue in prior versions.) CCleaner > Tools > Startup > Windows tab showed a new RunOnce entry. Once I disabled it the startup scans stopped. If you don't have CCleaner you can still access it through msconfig > startup tab. (Just as a side note, Adobe Flash Player Update has used RunOnce for a long time and I got tired of it scanning every time I started my computer.)

I have a particulary troublesome infection that I am at a loss for. I tried to run Malwarebytes but after downloading, installing, and updating, when I click on scan it starts but after 5 seconds it closes. Does the same thing with hijackthis, and superantispyware free edition. What is strange, is just for kicks I ran combofix, it updated, did the recovery console, went thru the scan completely, said it found a couple items but when I go back to run Malwarebytes, it still only runs for 5 seconds. All other malware remover free products I have tried render the same results such as RootRepeal, a couple of online scans, Spybot Search and Destroy etc. After running if I try to run again it says windows cannot access the specified path you may not have the appropriate permissions.

I found an interesting bug, but it doesn't have any security implications on Windows, but it actually causes a commercial Antivirus to not function properly.
My question is, should I apply to the Microsoft bug bounty reward ?
If so, how is the payment processed ? by paypal, check ?
If my windows bug is eligible for a reward, then Microsoft would be supporting a greater cause, which is my antivirus:

Bug Bounty Programs are programs whereby an individual is rewarded by the company or website concerned after they have pointed out a bug in such website. They are also called vulnerability bounty programs or hacker bounty programs. And researchers who do reporting of the bugs and defects in such programs or websites are called bounty hunters. These reportings help companies to get rid of such bugs at the right time before they are exploited by hackers and other miscreants.
The job of a bug bounty hunter is straight, find a bug and get rewarded. This is turned into a great profession for many. In this article, we shall be enlisting the names of 10 famous bounty hunters who are trusted by companies all around and are famous for their good deeds.

Everytime I start XP or open up my laptop and it comes off of standby Publisher starts AND Publisher tries to insert a picture from my in-built camera.

So I have to look at myself, cancel the insert/capture of picture, close Publisher, click 'no' to 'do you want to save?'- every time. There's nothing in msconfig-startup, except one suspiciously blank entry at the top. There's also nothing in Start->Programs->startup.

Any ideas why my computer loves Publisher so much? Or where I can see what is supposed to be starting up each time.

Also I almost never use Publisher and hadn't used it in a long time when this began

Thanks!

Well, I downloaded this trainer for a game. I have an avg exception file where if there is a false positive, I can put that program in there.
I started it up, ran it with the game, and it didn't work. (I never put it in the folder where I have an exception, and I never got a virus warning.)
I deleted the game, and the next time I started my computer it started 3 times, then crashed. A bunch of runtime errors popped up and Windows Explorer went non-responsive. Then it all stopped until next startup.

I went looking for the program, searched the C: drive, and found it located in my Temp file under AppData. Deleted it, then it returned after another startup. I could not believe it, it must be some type of stealth virus.

I changed the permissions on that, made it so no one could access it... no luck.
I searched the registry with TuneUp 2009 registry search and found two subkeys belonging to it. Deleted them, same thing keeps happening, they return to the registry...

I check my other User account on my computer, It's worse. When I log on, It keeps starting and won't stop unless I open notepad (or any other software to prevent Windows to log off.) then attempt to log off, stops the process, and cancel it.

I have no other choices, could this be the Alcan virus, could the Brute Force Remover Delete it? I have been afraid to use it. Could I also use ComboFix and catchme. I heard they can be dangerous to use without a malware expert's ok..

As stated by the author of ComboFix:

ComboFix is a very powerful tool which when improperly used may render your machine to a doorstop.

We first need to verify if there's any rootkits present and how they could affect our tools. DDS & GMER are preliminary scans. We use their logs to map our strategy for attack.

With these logs we can determine the infections present & decide whether to deploy ComboFix.

Hi All, I have a Lenovo B590 laptop. I had some issues with my wifi card (long story, and I guess it's not relevant) and decided to update my BIOS. The original version was H1ET75WW (1.18). I made a bootable USB with Rufus and the updating process was started. During the update I got a message like ?System will be restarted?. However, it didn't turn on anymore, the update seems failed. Now when I push the power button, the power led lights up, the fan starts and after a few seconds it restarts again and again endlessly. The first ?boot? is a bit longer 6-8 seconds, the next ones shorter, 3-4 seconds, but the screen is always blank. It's a bit promising that when I plug in an USB and while holding the Fn+R buttons and turning the laptop on, then the first ?boot? is a bit longer, and it tries to read the USB drive - at least it's led light starts blinking. So I hope that there is a solution to repair the BIOS by using the appropriate files ont the USB stick. What I tried so far:Taking out the battery and plugging out tha AC power, and holding the power button for a minute.Taking out the CMOS battery for half an hour and pushed the power button without battery/AC power.WinCrisis (even though I couldn't find a BIOS.wph file, but tried to rename EXE and CAP files).Creating a bootable USB again, with the DOS files on it from the official Lenovo site.Trying to rename/edit autoexec.bat and other files endlessly... I'm fixing this system for someone and they had the typical antivirus 2012 popup rampage BS. I got process explorer to run, found where its process launched from (application data/local) and there were three 3-character executables sitting there, all created on the same date, one of which was repeatedly starting up. So I terminated and deleted those three and the system was acting mostly normal. There were no unable-to-account-for items in any of the various ways to view startup lists but now windows update is broken :(

It's Win7 so I ran the built in Windows Update utility and 1 installed and 14 didn't but they were already downloaded. So I deleted the update cache with a batch file containing:
CD\
CD %Windir%
CD SoftwareDistribution
DEL /F /S /Q Download

and that worked so I re-checked for updates and it was the same ones so I hit download and they did redownload successfully then all failed to install pretty quickly. So I picked one of the Win7 security updates from the list and downloaded the WIn7 64 bit version of that KB# from download.microsoft.com and tried to install it manually via a standalone installer download of it. It went through the steps nicely then just said it failed.
I unhid the administrator account and logged in as that (for the first time on this system by the way) and got the same result trying to run it. So apparently something isn't quite right.

So I ran the SFC utility and it came up with a result that some... Read more

Hello and welcome to TSF.

Thanks for being honest in telling that you are a professional, getting paid for fixing computers, and that you're willing to pay a sum for for the service you may receive here.

However, this forum is set up to assist non-professional home users with their personal computers.. The analysts/helpers donate their free time for a good cause, not for payment in return. Therefore, not only offering payment, but also expecting them to do your work for you, may be considered unfair, bordering on offensive and ethically questionable.

I would recommend that you set msconfig as normal startup, once the computer starts up, launch the application, go to settings/preferences/options something to that effect and then find the option (launch with windows/windows startup/automatically start.. something similar to that) and then disable it from there.

It might just be the Windows Indexing Service. Have you enabled or installed any "Folding at Home" software? That will use your computer for various number crunching tasks devoted to science during periods of no use. I'm not sure if ATI still has that "Folding" option when you install the drivers, but you may have installed it when you installed the ATI driver package. I've never installed it, but it's either a startup program or a service you can disable.

Hello, I need help on my computer. Seems that every time I start a program (games and videos), my computer freezes. It also makes a loud beeping sound, which starts and ends every second. I was wondering if anyone could help me this problem. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

A:Computer Freezing When A Program Starts.

You may have a bad stick (or 2) of RAM. Try the following programs to see if that is the problem. I prefer Memtest86, but both are good programs. Memtest86 "A Stand-alone Memory Diagnostic" MicroSoft's Memory Test BIOS beep & POST codes

I have Windows XP Pro, SP3.

I've put a shortcut to a program in the Start>Programs>Startup folder, but the program that the shortcut points to, doesn't start. (I've had it there before and it worked.) Any ideas?

I remember that (it was probably somebody from some tech support) somebody told me to issue some command in Start>Run... . This allowed me to see and manipulate the startup programs. Does anybody know what the name of that command is?

Thank you,

royeo

Hello all

Has anyone tried out the new tool from MalwareBytes?

I have antiexploit. So far it hasn't caught anything for me. On the other hand, EMET has caught one attack. I believe EMET and antiexploiit have similar functionality.

A:Malwarebytes program and it will not run

hello I have split you to your own topic .. Please try these suggestions to run <MBAM and get a log. Some types of malware will disable MBAM and other security tools. If MBAM will not install, try renaming it.Before saving any of your security programs, rename them first. For example, before you save Malwarebytes', rename it to something like MBblah.exe and then click on Save and save it to your desktop. Same thing after you install it. Before running it, rename the main executable file first***Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file and change the .exe extension to .bat, .com, .pif, or .scr and then double-click on it to run.If after installation, MBAM will not run, open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder in Program Files, right-click on mbam.exe and change the .exe as noted above. Then double-click on it to run..***Another work around is by not using the mouse to install it, Just use the arrow keys, tab, and enter keys.***Open up command prompt, type in following commands: XP >> click the Start menu at the lower-left of your computer's desktop and select "Run". Type cmd into the Run box and click "OK".Vista >> click the Start menu at the lower-left of your computer's desktop and Type cmd in the search box.regsvr32 mbamext.dllregsvr32 ssubtmr6.dll regsvr32 vbalsgrid6.ocxregsvr32 zlib.dll ****If you cannot use the Internet, you will need access to another computer that has a connection. From there save mbam-setup.exe to a fla... A researcher has unearthed fresh evidence of cyber criminals' growing attraction to Apple's OS X platform with the discovery of a now-disbanded group that offered 43 cents for every infected Mac.
Mac-codec.com was just one of hundreds of "codec-partnerka," a term researcher Dmitry Samosseiko uses to describe the well-organized affiliate networks that pay a small bounty each time their malware is installed on an unsuspecting end user's computer. What makes this one stand apart is its dedication to the Mac platform.

It works on my other computers but not this one even though this is my newest computer. No error message occurs either. I also seem to be the only one having this problem out of other people playing the game :/ this is on a windows 7 home premium Toshiba satellite c655

I recently installed a program called Zortam Mp3 Media Studio which I haven't tried using yet. Every time I boot up, the program starts even though I never created a shortcut in any Start Up directory. Can anyone tell me where the program's shortcut is that is starting it at bootup and how to stop it doing this?

Thank you,

A:Solved: Program starts at BootUp; how do I stop it?

Best way to do this I think is to go to Start,Run and type in msconfig in the box ...then click on start up and unclick the offending program in the list that appears then click ok ...you will get a reminder when you next boot up but you can just ignore that ...

Hello,
We are having an issues with my son's dell laptop D620. It is running XP pro 2002 SP3.
The problem seems to occur both randomly and anytime the windows auto updater trys to install a program. Sometimes 1-2 minutees after boot up, an install starts out of nowhere. It proceeds as a normal install would 1) the install status window with progress bar appears and the bar progresses for 1/3 of the way, then 2) a second status window appears stating that the feature we are trying to use is on a CD ROM that is not available. this box inlcudes the browse folder area which happens to have the numeral "1" in the text entry area. 3) you can either cancel which just loops back to the install status then back to the second bowse status window, or select OK which brings up a third status box stating that path "1" cannot be found. 4) if you select the OK box that appears in the status message in the second half of item 3 above, you get a 4th status box that reads "The installation package for the product Status cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'status.msi'.
The only way to cancel this whole thing is to use the task manager applications tab and end the 'status' application. I don't know what triggers this to start. This same behavior seems to occur after some (not all) windows auto updates are downloaded and in the process of being installed. this problem seems to have began af... Read more

I have a laptop running Windows XP. When I first turn on the computer my X-Cleaner program automatically starts loading and running. This is a nuisance to me as I would rather run it when I am ready to turn off my computer. I have read that if I go to the start up folder that is the place to remove programs that run automatically at start up. The problem is the program is not there. I also read that I need to go to the registry if I don't find it in start up. I don't know how to go to the registry and then how to do whatever I need to in order to change this from occurring. If anyone knows how, can you please let me know?

Thank you,

Adrine

Go to Start > Run > type "msconfig". Go to the "Startup" tab, and see if the program is there. If it is, uncheck it and apply!

Hi, I'll try to be short, since it's strange and hard to explain.

Had windows 8.1, upgraded to Windows 10, everything normal.
After a few months, one program I use for a long time started giving me problems - plays.tv.
It''s a client app that allows recording of in-game footage for gamers. The problem I started experiencing was that whenever I clicked the shortcut or the exe of plays.tv, instead of opening the program window, nothing would happend. Upon clicking again after a while, I would get the usual "The program is already running". So, checking the task manager I could see there was indeed a process open for it. But nothing I could do would make it show up, there's not even an icon in the task bar. So, only solution would be to end the process in the task manager and restart again. Usually at the second attempt it starts normally. Not always.
Now, this problem started hapening rarely, to occasionally, to frequently, to always. And soon, it was affecting also another program, also related to video recording - OBS Studio. They didn't start at the same time, OBS just started more recently. Contacted support for plays.tv, they never seen anything like it.
Now, the most recent windows update changed the display a bit for the the task manager. So now when that happends, I can clearly see that the processes are indeed running in the task manager, but not in the apps tab where they were supposed to be, the process will be in the background processes instead.

I have seen it and cured it on Win 9x several times but have never seen it on XP.

Any clues out there

Hey everyone,

First time posting here. Recently last week, i started getting BSODs with the "ntoskrnl.exe" being the issue according to bluescreenview. I was playing CS:GO and it blue screened twice, one after another. Today when coming home from work, I was playing Rust, and bam, a series of BSOD. It seems to have gotten worse seeing as how I can't even run a program without it crashing.

I ran memtest and no errors were found.

I've gone ahead and uploaded the zip file along with screenshots of Bluescreenview.

Thanks!

A new program I am trying out is GotoCamera, a webcam tool.
There is no way I can find in the software setup that allows it to start automatically when Windows starts. With Windows XP I could add it to a startup folder, but I don't think Windows 7 has one. How can I get GotoCamera to start automatically when I start Windows? Thanks!

A:How can I have a program start automatically when Windows starts?

Press Start then All Programs and scroll down to the Startup folder. You can right click on this and open it.
