Bios options for SSD on W530

Q: Bios options for SSD on W530

Hi, I?m trying to replace the Hard drive in my W530 with a 2 Tb SSD drive (crucial MX500). The current HDD is configured as a dynamic drive with a system, recovery & 3 other NTFS partitions. I have tried copying the disk and using the ?migrate OS to SSD/HD? options in the MiniTool Partition Wizard Pro 10.3 program, however, when I swap out the old Drive & try booting from the new one, the bios doesn?t see the drive as bootable , although it identifies the drive model & if I run the Storage diagnostic utilities , no errors are found. Can you suggest what the problem could be, please? - Do I need to change a bios option / what option(s) should I look at? Thanks in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all - I've got a w530 2436-CTO that likely needs a new main board. It won't post, and when the memory is removed it gives a beep code that the manual says is either the DIMM or the system board. I believe my system board FRU is 04x1505, but I can't find anywhere to buy this part. How can I figure out which other FRUs are compatible? For example, I see many places selling 04x1547.A Lenovo doc describes 04x1505 as PLN Q1 y-amt y-TPM and the 04x1547 as PL Q3 W8 nAMTyTPM.Any thoughts? Thanks guys.

Without any memory installed, a 1-3-3-1 beep sequence is normal. Not sure on the board FRUs though. Do you happen to have a K2100M?

I am looking to upgrade the ram that is in my Lenovo W530. Right now there is 8 GB of Ram in the system and I am looking to replace it with  32 GB. My big concern is getting the wrong Ram sticks and it not working. Do I have to go with the ones that are spec'ed out through the Lenovo site or is there another good manufacturer that I can buy from?

I have a Thinkpad W530 (2438-4KU) running Windows 7 Pro, with a 3rd-generation (Sandy Bridge?) Intel processor (Intel Core i7-3630QM). Even though BIOS Update 2.70 had been listed in the Critical tab in Lenovo Update -- presumably because it addressed the Spectre and/or Meltdown vulnerabilities -- I purposely held off on installing it. Doubly so after reading comments on this board about pc?s running at hot and widely-varying temperatures after installation. Well, just now I ran Lenovo Update again, and was expecting to still see a BIOS update listed in the Critical tab since I hadn?t applied it. But I was surprised to see that the only BIOS update listed is now in the Recommended (not Critical) tab -- Update 2.71 -- and the only vulnerability it states as addressed by the update relates to Intel Active Management.  (There are no updates of any kind listed under Critical now.) So is 2.71 cumulative, i.e., does it have the Meltdown/Spectre patches even though not listed in the specs? And if so, shouldn?t it still be listed as Critcal in my run of Lenovo Update since I never applied 2.70? In addition, I?d appreciate any feedback from W530 users with Sandy Bridge as to how BIOS 2.71 (or for that matter, 2.70) is working for you -- particularly if you have Windows 7. Any heat issues? And what kind of practical performance hit did it cause (comparing to 2.69 or earlier)? Thanks

Can anyone confirm whether or not all W530's came with a Windows 8 key in BIOS?  I'm considering picking up a used W530 but most I've found are only Windows 7 and I'd like to be on 8.  I have media to install I just don't want to purchase one unless I know for certain that it will have an embedded key for Windows 8. Thanks,Kevin

A:W530 - Windows 8 BIOS key

Hello and welcome,

The way I read this:  ThinkPad Notebooks; 2013 to present (withdrawn models)

Some came with Windows 8, some came with 7 as a downgrade from 8, and some were "pure" Windows 7.  I'd expect the 8 and 7 via downgrade to have embedded Windows 8 keys and the pure 7 machines not.

Not quite 100% on this, but that's my understanding.

Hey guys, so I have a weird problem. I just bought an HDD caddy from newmodeus to add a 2nd drive to my W530 (a WD Caviar Black 750GB). Windows detects it and runs just fine, but when I try to access bios by hitting F1 on boot with the 2nd drive installed, it hangs at:Initializing Intel(R) Boot Agent GE v1.3.81PXE 2.1 Build 091 (Wfm 2.0) If I remove the drive and try to access bios, it works just fine. I eventually got into the BIOS properly by disabling  "ATAPI CD0" from the boot order. Disabled it, turned the machine off, stuck the drive in, restarted and everything's working fine now. Still, I'm curious if anyone knows what's going on? I'm hoping there's nothing to worry about. Thanks!

Ok, so it started happening again. I tried the F9 reset in BIOS, but it intermittently hangs when trying to access BIOS again after a couple days. Any help?

I have a Lenovo G50 70 laptop currently with Windows 10 and Linux Mint installed in a dual boot configuration. I recently made a bootable USB of another distro I wanted to try but when I tried booting from USB it shows the error "EFI USB boot device failed". I went into the BIOS and configured the settings and Exited Saving Changes but when I went into the BIOS again, I saw that the changes I made had no effect. Even after restoring default settings the changes reverted.I cannot open the laptop to change the CMOS battery, because that involves hardware and might be a bit risky. I have heard that a BIOS update can sometime solve this issue but that involves a bit of a risk as well.I am welcome to hear any other suggestions.

Hello Community!I tried to upgrade my W530 i5 3320M with an i7 3740QM. Unfortunately after installing, I could not even enter BIOS anymore, just the "Thinkpad" boot screen appears, without prompt to enter setup. Swapped back to the i5 - everything fine as before. I have installed to different RAMs (4GB Hynix orig.+8GB Crucial) in the slots underneath the keyboard- while using the i5 these are the presupposed slots. Nevertheless it should run with those, right? BIOS is from 2.65 from 2016.  Any idea what else could be up here? Thanks a lot!

In the beginning of March 2018, there was a critical BIOS update, which I ran... Prior to the update my system's CPU tempratures, while ideal, where very stable and around 55 degrees celsius. After the BIOS update my CPU temprature reads are all over the place. While ideal, the sensor can read 55c and instantly jump to 82c, back to 64c, upto over 90 degrees celsius and so on [you get the idea], with arbitrary temp reads, without any apparent reason...  Has anyone came across this issue?Should I be worried about this?Should I rollback to previus BIOS version? Could I ,even? Thanks

Hey there, Wednesday evening I got home from work to find that my w530 had ran out of battery. I plugged it in and attempted to start it, but was unable to get past the lenovo splash screen and couldn't get to windows login. Iritatingly, the computer will randomly boot to windows login and allow me to login very rarely.Since then I've tried various attempts to fix the issue but things haven't improved. Initially I could attempt to boot to a DVD or USB but now when I select either boot option the computer goes right back to the boot options. If I can use one, the computer will hardreset and reboot. If I hit f12 I can get into BIOS or into the diagnostic utilities and the computer is stable without any crashes, even when running diagnostics for 3+ hours. Diagnostics have not found any errors with the ram, mobo, cpu, or HDD.I thought initially it might be something BIOS related, so I reset to default options, tried pulling the CMOS battery, and then flashed and re-installed the latest BIOS version without any effect from any approaches.I pulled RAM sticks one at a time to see if that was the issue without any change. I then tried pulling the HDD, all but 1 ram stick (4gb of 16gb), as well as pulling the 16gb SSD flash drive. Even with this I couldn't get the computer to boot by USB or DVD. When I connected the HDD to my desktop tower and used the bootrec.exe command in command line I was able to get the tower and laptop to get to windows, but it has since reverted.I've diss... In the Dell XPS 13 (9360). Using the latest BIOS 1.3.2 (but the old previous BIOS version was the same).

If you go to the "Fn Lock Options" under BIOS, there are 2 options, they are listed as:
Lock Mode Disable/Standard   = The F1-12 Keys behave as function keys
Lock Mode Enable/Secondary = The F1-12 Keys control the secondary functions.

These options are Swapped. If you disable the "Fn Lock" and set the mode to "Lock Mode Disable/Standard", log into Windows, and Press F1, it will then MUTE the system. Even though it should act like an "F1" Key.
If you go back into BIOS, set the mode to "Lock Mode Enabled/Secondary", log into the system and Press F1, then the Help comes up.

The options are swapped on these two configure options. Please update the text in the BIOS to match the appropriate configuration. Thanks. I've included a ScreenShot of the BIOS options. "Fn Lock" does do what it describes (disables Fn-Esc). Doesn't matter if u turn this on or off. If you have it set up as I do below, the Fn Keys are set for the proper Function (F1-F12) operation. However, the text says it should do its secondary functions in this mode.

Where can I find an operating manual for the HP branded motherboard? My Oct. 2016 (build date) Omen 870-030vx desktop has 4x SATA connectors on the MB (Z170 chipset).  It has a 512gig SSD boot drive attached to SATA#1. I attached 2x 6gig HDDs to SATA#3 and #4 thinking that HDDs are usually connected in pairs for RAID such that channel 1 would be SATA#1&#2 and channel 2 would be SATA#3 & #4. The BIOS set up lets you change from AHCI mode to RAID but it never gives you an option to choose which set of HDDs you want to place in the array - nor does it have an option to choose RAID "0" or RAID "1", etc. If RAID is choosen in the BIOS then the computer fails to boot.  What have I done wrong here?

A:How to set up RAID in BIOS - not many options

Hi: You can't just switch the controller settings without making some changes in the OS registry, or the OS will not boot. Please see this related thread.  Should be the same for W10. https://communities.intel.com/thread/28709 Unfortunately, I have no idea where you would find a manual for the motherboard.  The only guides available will be on the support page for your PC. You may be able to use this general guide for how to set up a RAID array...starting on page 15 http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03519601

I have two bios options in the bios that will probably make the pc faster, but I want to know that it is safe. The first one is the HT speed, it is set at 400, but I can set it to 800. Should I do this?

The second is the DRAM Dimm voltage adjustment. I have geil value ram ddr400 running at 227 fsb with 2.5-3-3-6 timings. The voltage is set at 1.6, should I set it to 1.65?

Will these settings make a performance difference?

A:Weird Bios options I don't get?????

hey there,

The ht speed is the bandwidth between the CPU and the AGP slot. You dont really need to up it unless your having trouble with your graphics card.

The only reason you would need to up the voltage on the RAM is if you have overclocked it. If you have then a higher voltage will make it more stable. If you havent, you'll just be giving it a higher voltage.

Hope this helps

Hello.I have a G40-30 laptop.I changed the hard disk and installed windows 10. The problem is when I boo my computer after post and before windows it shows me 2 messages. "Windows boot manager boot failed" where I press ok and then "Lenovo recovery system boot failed" where I press ok again and then it enters Windows normally. Those errors are because the original Hard Disk had installed 2 partitions extra one for each error. From Bios I change from EFI to legacy and I change to "legacy first" for boot priority. But after saving and restart the "legacy first" boot priority is not saved and it has changed back to EFI. The fist chane remains saved as I selected it.I tried updating the BIOS with the latest version but when I select to procced with the update the computer restarts and the BIOS is not updated.Again the computer works fine but I cannot save the changes I make to the BIOS. And I have tried to restore default setting to the BIOS but nothing changed.Any thoughts would be very helpfull.Thank you

Abdo2, welcome to the forum. I am not certain that you can see more options in the BIOS.  Once you're in the BIOS, you can use the arrow keys to move from section to section and through the options in each section.  If the option is greyed out, it means that it is not available.  HP keeps their BIOS options to a minimum. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

Have you ever seen a BIOS that has absolutely no boot options other than the internal disk.

I bought this little 11.6" Asus X205TA 1.0 laptop which is actually a handy little device. It obviously has no optical drive but 2 USB ports. But the temporary and permanent boot order does only allow booting from the internal disk. I am really stuck if I want to e.g. recover from a Macrium image.

I guess I will have to make my own refresh images. And even those I can only use as long as the machine functions. Any other ideas.

That's a new one on me, Wolfgang. Seems your only option is something like Paragon Migrate and a spare SSD to swap in case of catastrophe.

SATA AHCI Mode [Disabled]
SATA Port0-1 Native Mode [Disabled]
My HDD is recognized as SATA-II by HD Tune though the speeds of my HDD are kinda slowish 30mb/sec,but anyway my main question is: Is it ok if i leave them disabled or its better to have them enabled? I'm planning on buying another SATA-II HDD and im curious of these settings.

A:A question regarding some options in my bios !

Welcome!

I don't know about the second option, but I know the first. See this tutorial before changing anything: AHCI : Enable in Windows 7 / Vista

I have roughly 100 M920q's that I want to set up with an identical BIOS config. Whilst I could do them all manually, this will take a significant amount of time.I looked at the Lenovo BIOS Config Tool, but this doesn't seem to apply settings from the config files to any of the several machine models I tried.I then went to look at the Windows BIOS Setting tool. The first tool; SRWIN.exe (& x64 version) errors out with the followingStartService Error: 5
CreateFile Error: 2
Unable to get bios driver handle. The second tool CFGWIN.exe (& x64 version) works but doesn't provide the same level of functionality as the first tool. Please, could someone help me out, as I don't want to have to manually set ~100 PCs.

I'm working on a friends HP ENVY Notebook - m7-n109dx and we believe as well as Best Buy's Geek Squad believe that the notebook has been hacked into my friend and I are at our witts end.All we can get into at this time is bios when we set bios to default and try to boot to safe mode windows defender offline blocks it from booting into safe mode and same thing when we press f11 to get into system recovery win defender offline blocks it. Envy Notebook is not even 6 mo old any help will be greatly apppreciated.       Notifications Email me when someone repliesTagsMessage Tags Tips to get the best answerHere are some tips to help you get the best answer.
