Remote Desktop Access over the internet: "can't connect to the server"

Q: Remote Desktop Access over the internet: "can't connect to the server"

Hello,

I am trying to configure Remote Desktop Access to work over the internet.
Remote Desktop Access works on my local network.

Both of my computers are on Windows 7 Professionnal. My router is a Belkin F9K1002.

I followed the official widows tutorial. I forwarded the necessary port on my router (I switched from port 3389 to 50000, in case 3389 was blocked by my isp).

Every time I try to connect I get

"Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:
1)Remote access to the server is not enabled
2)The remote computer is turned off
1)The remote computer is not available on the network
Make sure the remote computer is turned on and connected to the network, and that remote access is enabled."

Any ideas as to where the problem could be coming from?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have used several different programs lately that whenever they try to validate my information from the web, I get an error that the program is "unable to connect to remote server." I removed my anti-virus software and disabled windows firewall, but nothing seems to work. Internet Explorer and Firefox seem to work just fine. The other weird things is that these programs work just fine when I use them on my laptop which is connected to the same router. Thus, the router is not the problem. Since I have the same problem with multiple programs, I'm assuming that there must be something wrong with my windows network settings. I am running Windows XP

Any ideas of what fixes I can try?

I am trying to use my computer running Windows XP Home to remote desktop into my computer running Windows 7 Ultimate over the internet.

The computer I am trying to connect to is listening on port 3389, has all sort of firewall exceptions sorted and is enabled to accept remote connections. The computer I am trying to use to connect has no firewall currently (I have disabled it just to get this working).

And yet when I try and connect using the ip address of the host computer I receive the message "remote desktop cannot connect to the remote computer for one of the following reasons"... and so on.

What else do I need to do now to get this working?

Thanks.

Hi all, I'm trying to remote into a user's computer in another office of my company. After putting in the user's credentials I get "You do not have access to logon to this session". I've already removed fInHelpMode from HKEY_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server and rebooted but get the same error when trying to log in as the user. I can connect and log in as administrator but in this case I need to connect a printer via TCP/IP so I need to be logged in as the user. I can remote into other computers just fine.

We are an XP Pro shop. Computers are Dells, I beleive the user is on the same model I am, Dell latitude E6400.

Any ideas?

Well I'm on Windows 8 and my computer has been running fine until yesterday. Randomly at around 8:00, my internet shut itself and it wouldn't work. I tried resetting the router and such but nothing worked. My computer can connect to the internet connection,
but when I boot up Google Chrome it will not work. So I did some troubleshooting and eventually it said this "The remote device or resource won't accept the connection". And it's not only my internet browser that won't work. Other apps like Skype
won't connect either. After looking at another thread, I tried resetting the settings on Internet Explorer and changing the Proxy thing but nothing worked. Someone also suggested downloading Hitman, but that was stupid considering I couldn't even connect to
the internet. I had Windows Defender scan my computer and it said there was nothing wrong. So I'm not sure what is up. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

A:Cannot connect to Internet. "The remote device or resource won't accept the connection"

Make sure other device connected to your internet don't have similar issue
is there any changes before this issue happen? install, reinstall, windows update, HW changes, router setting or environment changes
just try at safe mode with networking, if its fine at safe mode with networking, than something to do with 3rd party software, antivirus, firewall ect. Try to restore your PC using restore point
if this issue also persist at safe mode, its considering driver or hardware failure (try to update driver, reinstall or run basic TS regarding WLan issue)

Hi!

My daughter got a virus on her laptop and after getting rid of it (I think all the way, it's hard to tell until I can update the anti-virus software) I can no longer connect her laptop to the internet.

I have had a problem in the past with having to reboot the server and all the computers in order for the computers (all of them in the house) to register new ip addresses. Normally, if I have one computer that refuses to connect even after a reboot of the entire system I can connect it thru LAN and it, bang, fixes itself. However, this time it is not working.

Not only will her wireless not connect but neither will the LAN. I have opened the cmd prompt and done an ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew. Every time I do this I get the message:

"An error occurred while renewing interface Wireless Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out."

I tried the "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" and it seemed to work fine.

I also tried the "netsh winsock reset" and it seemed to work fine as well.

I rebooted each time I attempted a fix. Still I am unable to connect to the internet. It says it is connecting locally, but will not connect to the actual internet. When I use the repair option it gives me the same messages over and over that do not work. It always leads back to the IP address.

Here are the specs on her computer and as much information as I can think of. Please let me know what else I can try to get her compu... Read more

Hi,

I suggest you create a new admin account and login on the machine with new created account to check the result. If the issue persists, please restart the machine with the original user account and collect the following log file for research.

If anybody can solve this, I will cry. I'm not joking. I will break down and cry because I've been struggling with this for 6 months...

So here's the issue in a nutshell:
My internet is connected to a laptop downstairs as well as mine (sometimes but rarely). I often cant connect. It comes up with a box that says "Connect to a Network" and for options, "Troubleshoot problems" or "Tell me more about Internet connection problems". I click "Troubleshoot problems" about 5,000 times a day (no joke) and about 20 of those times it fixes the problem. The other times it does nothing and I have to go shut off the downstairs computer and unplug and plug back in the router about 10 times. Then sometimes is works for 10 minutes or so, and sometimes it doesn't. If I ever do get it working, it never ever stays working.

Most times when the internet does connect, it works for about 30 seconds then shows a yellow triangle warning said with an exclamation mark stating "limited access".

My SGS2 phone connects just fine. So does the laptop downstairs and any other gadgets except for my desktop! This is frustrating as anything!

I've tried various commands from different websites to fix it and nothing works. I've even tried booting in safe mode with networking (NOTHING ELSE RUNNING) and the internet still doesn't connect. It ALWAYS shows the network with full bars, but never connects.

Please, let's put... Read more

Hello! Hope you can help me...
I use PPPoE connection. Telephone cable->ADSL->Wireless Router. ADSL is also a wireless router, but is in Bridge mode.

If I connect the computer directly to ADSL modem, works just fine. But when I connect it to Wireless Router, it says No internet access. I wouldn't be bothered by this if all applications that use an internet connection would work. But it seems like only 'net browsers do.
Also, two laptops work just fine.
I have rebooted them over and over, then unplugged them both, plugging in ADSL first, and after 5 minutes the Wireless Router.

ping localhost works
ping Yahoo! works
ping 192.168.1.1 (adsl home page) dosen't work from computer, but works from laptops.
Problem isn't from my wireless card, had it with 2 wireless usb adapters as well.
Yesterday and the day before, it magically worked. But since then it didn't.
Also, it says "Wireless Network Connection 15", since i've tried pluggin' in those USB addapters in each USB port I could find.

First, please forgive me if this is formatted oddly- I am typing this on my Blackberry.

For the past few months, I have been accessing the internet with my laptop's wifi through my neighbor's password-protected network (with his permission). I also sometimes go online using another neighborhood network which does NOT have a security key.

As of today, I can view networks and connect to both of these (as well as others), but I can't get online. I get the "No Internet access" message when I connect to any network.

When I go to the command prompt and type ipconfig /all, I get this for IPv4 address: 192.168.1.9(Preferred) and I cannot successfully ping any ip addresses.

I have rebooted already and renewed my network adaptor. Any other suggestions would be very welcome. Thank you!

Hello, about 3 days ago my internet my internet was working perfectly. And two days ago my router decided to stop working and shut down all internet connections it was connected to. But I soon fixed the router (did a reboot) and everything works fine, except my gaming desktop which shows a "limited access" next to the router name and a yellow triangle with a "!" on it.

Here are the things I tried:
Rebooting both the router and modem
setting a default gateway to the IPV4 and IPV6 address
Uninstalling the network drivers so they would automatically install again

I'm running out of options. I searched everywhere but nothing seems to work. And no way am I re-installing windows 7. I have about 60 steam games on my desktop and I do not want to re-install every one of those.

Any bit of help would be wonderful

If the network stack was corrupted or if winsock is hosed the file below can straighten that all out for you.

Save the file below, unzip and run the file, let it run until your machine reboots itself. If this doesn't work please post a screen shot of your ipconfig/all and I'll have a look at it.

Hello, I recently had to move a couple XP Pro computers around and change their workgroup / workstation "Computer name". But now my "Run as" feature and remote desktop feature don’t work properly...don’t understand...read ahead...

OK, so lets say when I originally set up this one dell computer right out of the box, I set it up with the workgroup name being WS999 and my personal admin user account name was 999 on that computer. Then I moved that computer and changed its workgroup computer name to WS700, and then renamed my personal admin user account to 700 to match…for my own personal preference.

But now when I go to use the "Run as" feature (desktop icon, shift + right click, “Run as...”) in order to run a program with admin privileges through my admin account while logged on in a limited user account, it wants the original admin user name of 999 and not my NEW personal admin user account 700. For me to run the program as an admin, I have to put in the original admin user account name of 999 as the user for it to work. The same thing happens when I try to use remote desktop on the XP computers I have changed the workstation ID and admin user account name on.

I know I could use the built in MASTER admin account, but I don’t like too from previous problems and a super long PW All I did was go to “my computer” proper... Read more

Good afternoon!

I have a two HP machines - a desktop running Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit, and a laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

I've been having network/internet issues with the laptop for the past week that have reached a low point today. Previous to today, the laptop would frequently lose internet access for a few minutes. Eventually it would reconnect. Today, however, I am getting the "No Internet access" message with the little yellow ! sign down in the task bar and no amount of begging/pleading/resetting will make it go away. I am apparently still connected to the home network itself - just no internet.

My desktop, on the other hand, is connecting to the internet just fine. Both connect wirelessly, by the way.

As the desktop seems to be fine, I am assuming that this issue is with the laptop itself and not with the router. I don't have access to the router anyway - I rent my apartment, internet is included, but connected via a router in my landlord's apartment next door. They're away for a few days, so I'm out of luck, for now, if you ask me to do something with that equipment!

Any help would, of course, be most appreciated!

Hi All

I have a strange problem. I have 2 PC's on a LAN, both Windows 7 Ultimate. Both PC's is connected to the same router via ethernet. Now PC number two has internet access and works great, but PC number 1 also shows "Internet Access" in the system tray and also in the network map, it shows that it is connected to the internet. But when I open ANY browser(FF, IE, Chrome) it cannot connect to the internet. Skype also cannot connect. As I said, the other PC (PC2) can connect fine and has the exact same setup as PC1. However, on PC1, when I manually connect via a dial-up broadband connection using the SAME username and password to my ISP as I used in the router config, it connects. The problem is that it loses the connection every 2 minutes or so...(failed to connect...redialing...). Can anyone tell me what I can do on PC1 to make it connect to the internet via the router the same way the other PC does?

Also, the two PC connects fine over the LAN between each other, but as I said, PC 1 cannot connect to the WAN the same way PC2 does.

Things I tried: I did a TCP/IP stack repair and rebooted. Nothing. I disconnected the 'working PC' from the LAN, nothing. I uninstalled the Antivirus and Firewall, nothing...

Router: Siemens Giga 762SX
Network adapter on PC1: Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC. I do have the latest drivers installed

Thanks

if its using a modem(which barely anyone does anymore). Make sure windows detected it properly. Go into the device manager and make sure there are no exclamation points or question marks by it which usually means windows did not detect it and or the driver properly. Also, check your network adapters in the properties box in network connection. There should be at least 1 but probably more adapters there which tell the modem how to connect to the network etc. If there arent any listed then you probably will need to add them manually.

I just go to the other partition or HDD, right-click the drive letter/icon and drag to the desktop choosing Create shortcut here. That works but it probably would be better to do the same with a Folder on the other drive. Dropping a file on the icon should copy or save it there.

My server is a Dell Dimension desktop with a USB connected printer, an HP 2575.

I WAS able to print on the HP printer remotely from my Sony Vaio laptop in another room, but I suddenly started getting the "RPC server unavailable" error when trying to print from the Vaio on that printer.
I've tried restarting the RPC and Print Spooler services on both the server and the client - but nothing works.

After reading the Microsoft's Support notes, I tried pinging the server. The ping was successful when I use the IP address, but NOT successful when I use the server's ComputerName. So I concluded that the client doesn't recognize the server name. So I deleted the printer from the client, changed the Computer Name on the server, rebooted, but now I cannot add the printer to the network with the new name.

Look in Services to see if the status for RPC shows Started. If it is stopped your computer won't be able to do most everything. Also look at the Dependencies tab for RPC and check that all of the services it depends on are started. If one is not, that may be a clue why RPC is stopping.

Hi TimFF,
This might be related with the UAC settings, check this thread:
give full permission for the users in program
files folder
The steps in the above thread is not recommended.
For the short name usage, we may consider to create a directory-junction from
PROGRA~1 to C:\Program Files:
With the following commands:
mklink /J "C:\PROGRA~1" "C:\Program Files"
Reference:
Mklink

Thanks

A:PC has "Internet Access" but cannot connect to the internet

found the problem...It was the Firewall on the router, for some reason it only blocked the 1LAn connection, and not the other one. How do I allow that one PC connection through other firewall? I tried different ports but it keeps blocking the one PC only

I have read every article and forum thread I could find, and no one has ever gotten to the bottom of this.  I'm giving it a try here, and am providing lots of test results.
When the remote computer tries to connect to the host, it gives an error message that says the following "Your computer could not connect to another console session on the remote computer because you already have a console session in progress."
Here are the troubleshooting steps I have done:
1) Rebooted remote computer.  Failed.
2) Rebooted host computer.  Failed.
3) Connected with different remote computer to same host computer.  OK.
4) Connected with remote computer under Administrator account.  Failed.
5) Connected with remote computer to different host computer on same network.  OK.
6) Ran ipconfig /flushdns on remote computer.  Failed.
7) Deleted default.rdp file on remote computer.  Failed.
8) Ran Disk Cleanup on remote computer.  Failed.
9) Reviewed hosts file on remote computer.  Empty.
10) Test using both computer name and IP address.  Both failed.
11) Manually cleaned out every temp file I could find.  Failed.
12) Cleared registry entry for MRU for Remote Desktop.  Failed.
12) Changed IP address on host computer.  Succeeded.
Here is what I get out of this testing.  The remote computer is storing information about the connection to the host computer via IP address, and the error is only w... Read more

Hi, I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate x64 connecting to Server 2008 x64 (NOT R2) via the terminal client, MSTSC "Remote Desktop".  When I first connect, my connection shows as fullscreen (as per my settings) with the connection bar (the "flap" at the top
that has the minimize, retore and close buttons on it).
Here's my problem... if I hit the "restore down" button, the RD window shrinks down and I can resize it etc like any normal window.  But now if I hit "maximize", instead of going fullscreen again (like in Vista's version) it maximizes the RD window,
but leaves the title bar in place.  So now my RD window has scrollbars because the titlebar and other bits of "chrome" around the window have shrunk the viewable area, but my remote desktop remains at the same resolution.
Basically, I just want to know - once you have resized a Windows 7 remote desktop winow, how do you get it to go into fullscreen again, so there's no title bar etc. in the way, just the remote desktop you want to work on.
Thanks much,
Richard

Using remote desktop connection to a win XP SP2 computer, I have admin rights, but I don't see an option to restart the machine. Where would I find that, or where would I add it?

A:Solved: Remote Desktop Connection: Adding "restart"

Here's how to shutdown or reboot a computer administered by Remote Desktop.

Start --> Run
Type in "taskmgr" without the quotation marks. Notice the spelling. Click "OK".

The Windows Task Manager will open.

n the "Shut Down" menu you can see all the options for the computer. You can Log Off and Disconnect plus you have the option of Restarting or Turning Off the computer.

Hi,
I am having trouble connecting remotely to my work's servers.  It was previously working fine, but today I upgraded to Windows 8.1 and now I'm getting an error.  It says my credentials do not work.  Now, my username and password are both still
valid, as they were used to log in from another computer.  I initially thought it was that the firewall was preventing me from connecting, but I enabled the Remote Desktop app and it still does not work.
I'm kind of at a loss on where to go from here so any help would be appreciated.

I get this error message when trying to connect to my remote vista RTM
(Ultimate) machine.. It happens at random.. the only fix is to
remotely reboot the machine via a "shutdown" command.

It says to click ok to terminate the application, that only results in
a blank screen.

in the event viewer:

Faulting application atbroker.exe, version 6.0.6000.16386, time stamp
0x4549b800, faulting module USER32.dll, version 6.0.6000.16386, time
stamp 0x4549d372, exception code 0xc0000142, fault offset
0x0000000000001d28, process id 0xeb8, application start time
0x01c749630f7606db.

Event ID 1000 , Application Error...

No real solutions here either:

I tried looking to see if there were any applications which may be causing this.. by going back to the first time this happened in event viewer/ installations history..

Only one major app was updated around the first instance.. it was Visual Studio 2005 Sp1 for Vista and the hotfix.. so this isnt something I can remove if it is the culprit.

What is Atbroker anyway.. anyone run into this and fixed it?

A simple reboot (remote reboot) fixes things, but potential lost data which isnt saved occurs.

& restarted the remote PC as well.

I just noticed that there is a new (hidden) file in "my documents" folder called "Default". It is a hidden folder and was not there 4 days ago.

When I check the properties on it it simply says that is is just a Remote Desktop Connection type and it was created August 24th, 2008.

My remote desktop and remote assistance features are not active or loaded.

Is this file normal or not?

Thank you!

I have a desktop and a laptop (both running 7057) in my homegroup. I want to be able to run programs off of the desktop from the laptop. Is there a simple way to do this? I don't need VPN capabilities as I just want to be able to do this from inside the house. I've read through a bunch of threads here but haven't found what I was looking for. I can share files/folders just fine but can't seem to figure out how to share programs.

Thanks in advance.

Hi all,

Running windows 7 pro and have been unable to rdp into my machine for the last couple of days. I've noticed that the service "remote desktop services" is missing from services.msc. Presume this is my problem.

Would anyone know how to get this service back and running. I'm unable to use system restore as all my restore points throw up an error.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

A:"Remote Desktop Services" service missing

Try opening CMD as an administrator

type in SFC /SCANNOW

this will require your Windows 7 DVD. If you don't have one you should have a Factory Restore partition that will work if you have an OEM machine.
