Problem with deleting files, permanently deletes and doesn't go to bin

Q: Problem with deleting files, permanently deletes and doesn't go to bin

For months now every time I 'right click' and delete, items don't go to recycle bin. They permantly delete instead for some reason and never go to recycle bin whatsoever.

I am fed up with this because I have deleted things by accident and I want the recycle bin to work so I can send them back if I accidentally delete a file.

Is there any way I can fix this? I am using Windows 7 Home Premium.

Preferred Solution: Problem with deleting files, permanently deletes and doesn't go to bin

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This is the first thing I can recommend doing:
Right-click the Recycle Bin
Choose Properties
Select "Custom size" (you don't have to change the number in the Maximum size field, but you can if you wish)
If you have more than one storage drive, then select them and do the same thing
Click OK
If this doesn't work, then there may be other things to try. Although, I haven't checked yet.

Hello, I deleted some sensitive information in the recycling bin, and I'd like to permanently erase them. I don't have the means to wipe my hard drive (I'm using a netbook). If I fill the hard drive to max capacity and delete the excess files afterwards will this overwrite the undesired files?

Thanks for the help.

Once you have emptied your trash can, defragmenting your hard drive can normally do the trick.
There are software programs too that can help, having never used one I cannot recommend any but google your post title and have a look around

A:files are permanently deleting

Hello pag, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Is this happening with all files, or just certain ones?

Is this happening from certain locations, or all locations that you deleted them from?

Do you also have the "Display delete confirmation dialog" box checked for each listed drive location?

Anything deleted from a removable drive (ex: USB drive) will always be automatically permanently deleted, and will not go to the Recycle Bin. Only files deleted from internal or SATA connected drives will go to the Recycle Bin first.

If the file you are deleting is larger than the max storage size of the Recycle Bin, then it will prompt you to permanently delete instead of going into the Recycle Bin.

Hope this helps for now,

Okay, I was just reading a previous forum on deleting files; however, that seems very detailed and harsh. My husband is leaving a place of employment and needs to remove his personal info from his computer without destroying the computer. Has anyone used Micosoft's SDelete (I think that is it) for this? The Darik Nuke and Boot (not sure that is the exact name) seems to be very detailed and I'm not sure I can walk him through that. He has files in his MS Word that need to be permanently removed, and I guess log in information on certain accounts he has accessed online, i.e. banking, etc. Any suggestions as to what to use that is "user friendly" for someone who isn't real computer saavy? Thanks.

I am having a problem with deleting files in Windows 7, when I delete a file, it asks if I want to send it to the recycle bin, and I say "yes" but if I go into the recycle bin, the file is not there and it is not in its original directory. it is like it decided to permanently delete and skip going to the recycle bin. When I sort the recycle bin by 'date deleted', the last thing in the recycle bin is a few weeks old. I have deleted many things since the last date that the recycle bin says my last deleted file was. and I did not empty the recycle bin otherwise the files from a few weeks ago would be also gone. I googled the problem but Google only showed results on how to bypass the recycle bin and permanently delete but it showed nothing about Windows doing it on its own. Please help me fix this because I lost an mp3 that I made because of this problem.

A:files are permanently deleting instead of going to the recycle bin

Do you still have the 'Recycle bin' icon on the desktop ? If you do, right click on it and see if your version of properties is similar to mine in that the button 'Don't move files to the Recycle Bin . . .' is the active option.

Untick this button to get files to go back to the recycle bin. As you will see I don't use it, I just havve the warning message active.

Maybe I'm really OCD but I downloaded certain applications that I now don't need, so is it ok to go into regedit and find those applications and delete them or should I just use add/remove programmes and search windows explorer?

I've noticed that even though I've deleted an application in regedit under software, some file with the same word as the application appears when searching on windows explorer.

A:Permanently deleting files/folders forever

Use the normal/standard method for uninstalling software.

You will not see any performance gain by removing the entries that you mentioned from the registry.

If the normal uninstallation process leaves some folders/files behind, you can rename them and see if things still work as desired. After a week or two, you can delete them... but it should not be a big problem if those left over files/folders happen to hang around.

Dear All,
I have been searching a solution for this strange issue for long. I'm an IT Admin in a windows domain where few PCs are affected with this issue. When users delete files, it gets deleted permanently and do not go to Recycle Bin. Users do get alert that file
will be deleted permanently. I searched a lot and tried few solutions found. Let me brief what I tried so far;

This is the Recycle Bin Properties dialog box, which is strange that I don't see drives there.
After doing a lot of search, I tried few solutions. One is to delete $Recycle.Bin folder for all drives and restarting computer. Then tried deleting a single file. Though this method recreated $Recycle.Bin hidden folders, it didn't fix my problem. Then I found somewhere that booting in safe mode and then deleting a file would repair any issues with Recycle Bin. Tried that as well. Didn't fix my problem.

Please note that all of above actions done and screenshots taken are from an Admin account. Is there anything further I can try to fix this issue? Why did this happen in first place?

Thank you all

A:Recycle Bin permanently deletes

Follow the tutorial and thread posted below you'll find options to block your system to permanently deleting files without moving it into recycle bin:

Recycle Bin - Permanently Delete Items Automatically

One more reference URL:

If that didn't helps you, consider repairing your system using Installation CD DVD or inbuilt system recovery options. Moreover, you can also try creating a fresh administrator account for your system and then try performing the same functions.

In Windows 8.1 Pro Update 1 64-bit I am not given the option to move files to the Recycle Bin. Instead, when I delete a file I am asked "Are you sure you want to permanently delete this file?"In the Recycle Bin properties for each hard drive partition I have not selected "Don't move files to the Recycle Bin" and I have check-marked "Display delete confirmation dialog."

I can't remember precisely when this started to happen, but I did install Update 1 recently. I don't know if that matters.

Hi all.

To delete a number of items at once in My Documents or in My Pictures, I hold down the Ctrl key while clicking a few items - and then I click 'Delete'.

But half the time I do this, instead of deleting the items - it makes another copy of them.

Is there any way of correcting this problem? It would now take me a full half hour to individually delete each file.

Thanks for any help.

I have recently installed Windows 8.1 and use AOL for mail. If I use the 'Search box' located on my inbox page to find a website and then return to my inbox and try to delete the text from the 'search box' - emails in my inbox get deleted instead. I have checked that I am placing the curser in the "search box" but it still deletes one or sometimes several emails. Does anyone know why this would happen.

This is one of three quirks that I am experiencing - another is that having opened an email from a website e.g money supermarket when i click in the right hand corner to maximise the page size it opens full size then immediately reverts back to the original. And finally when I go to return an email and start typing the message it will type the first few letters and then stop. I have to replace the curser, click and start typing again.

These are all annoying, they don't happen consistently and I have no idea if they are related or not. Can anyone give me any pointers as to what might help.

After moving an email to my 'saved stuff' folder within the Storage folder, I delete the original item within the Inbox.

I find that the saved item has also vanished.

This has happened over 6 times. I keep restoring the item by sending it to myself again from another source.

I've been assuming that an item in the Inbox that is also in the Storage folder area would result in having two emails on my machine. Is this wrong? Is one a shortcut?
If anyone knows of a meaningful explanation of the Folders and theory, please post it.

I'm using the 2009 version, but 2011 should work the same: When I move a message from any pop3 account folder to a storage folder, it just moves and there is no need to delete it from the source pop3 folder. You could try a repair of Windows Live Essentials via Programs and Features. It sure sounds like something is wrong.

I recently realised that MS Word (both 2003 and 2007) has a nasty feature when it comes to selecting text, a feature that other word processors don't have. Namely, when wanting to delete the text between the cursor and the end of the row (Shift+End then Delete), what's also deleted is the line break between the end of the row and the start of the next paragraph. It's when the next paragraph is of a different style that this problem is most annoying, because that paragraph's text is then immediately brought right after the cursor, making it the same style as the paragraph from which I've just deleted. To more clearly exemplify this, I've created this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OsgHeCqD9Q8 Is it possible to make Word not behave like this, i.e. only the delete the selected characters rather than make a mess out of the following paragraph? Thanks for any help!

I recently uploaded pictures from my camera to my HP (uses VISTA Home Premium). At first I had all these photos in a folder in "My Pictures". Later on I deleted the pictures did not wish to save and also deleted it from my trashcan. However, I noticed that in the vista search bar, if you type in the file name of that picture folder, it shows a preview of every picture....even the ones I thought were permanently deleted! I tried right clicking and deleting it. But of course, since I already deleted it, it shows up as "this is no longer located in [location]. Please verify item's location and try again". these are thumbnails of the pictures that I already deleted. I can't open these files because I deleted the original....How do I delete this? If this doesn't make sense,How do I get rid of these images? Are there any more of my pictures stored somewhere else? Help!

A:Permanently Deleting pictures from Vista

I don't know how to delete the thumbnails of the pics you already deleted. I do know that pics are stored in three places on my HP laptop: (1) Pictures folder, (2) Photo Gallery, and (3) Search. Recently, I decided that I didn't need pics stored in 3 places, so I deleted all in Photo Gallery and those in Search, and then found out that the pics in my picture folder were automatically deleted. I could have cried----until I found out I could retrieve the deleted images.

Hello. I've been attempting to clean up my notification area on my Windows Vista 32 bit computer by removing all non-system icons. I don't just want the unwanted icons to be hidden, and would like them to be removed from the notification area entirely. I have used this tutorial and have been successful removing the unwanted icons, but whenever I reboot my computer, it reverts to how it once was. The issue appears to be that two registry keys that I delete, being IconStreams and PastIconStreams, keep reappearing after I reboot and restore all of the unwanted icons. I'm not sure what is causing them to constantly reappear, and I couldn't find any tutorials that addressed how to keep them from reappearing, so any help in permanently removing these keys would be much appreciated!

Okay so yesterday I was cleaning out my laptop and I deleted the swsetup folder not knowing what it was... I decided to google it and found out it was important.. I decided I'll finish up then recover it. Long story short I forgot about it and ran a cleaning program and it deleted everything that was in the rubbish bin... How can I get this folder back? or Is there one I can download? Or am I just screwed...

A:Accidentally deleting swsetup file permanently

Hi: Unfortunately, you are out of luck. That file is not as important as you think. All the SWSetup folder contains are the driver and software installation files that came with your PC. Most of those files can be downloaded from your PC's support and driver page, with the exception of the trial software. I always delete that file.  It can far exceed 1 GB in size. I do save it on a portable hard drive before I delete it, but I can count on one hand the number of times in the last dozen years I have had to go to one of the SWSetup files I saved for my many HP PC's over the years, to retrieve an installation file that I needed.

A:How do I PERMANENTLY delete "permanently" deleted files from my computer?

Those files are still there, but we arent able to access/see them .. I just know that Windows "hide" these files from the tables, but it leaves the registry of these files "open" so other information can be written over.

That means... By the time your files will be overwritten by other information and slowly they will permanently be deleted.

I recently cloned my HDD to a new SSD and that seemed to go okay. The original HHD had 2 partitions named Miscellaneous 1 and Miscellaneous 2. I honestly do not know where those 2 partitions came from. I guess I could have created them some years ago, but I just do not remember. As you would expect after the cloning I had those same 2 partitions on my new SSD. When I check partition properties they both show up with about 100 MB used space and 39 GB of free space. I want to clean up that drive (as well as my new drive) so I deleted them on the HDD using Disk Management. For some reason when I did that it also deleted 2 partitions that had data and pictures in them. That was okay since I have that information on the new drive, but I would like to get rid of the 2 Miscellaneous partitions on the SSD, but am afraid to do so. When I run Disk Management it does not show the missing files on the HDD (as I would expect) and does show them on the SSD (again as I would expect).

I learned about Partition Wizard Mini-tool from this forum. I ran the Partition Recovery Wizard and it shows the 2 miscellaneous and 2 data files as lost/deleted on the SSD. I have attached screen shots that hopefully will help to explain what I am trying to describe. Any comments or suggestions about what may have happened and what I need to do will be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

A:Deleting an empty partition also deletes a partition with data.

Just joined and this is my first problem

After a system crash, computer restarted with manufacturers recovery disc OK.

Now if i send a file etc to the recycle bin, a message window opens telling me it it doing the recycling but it just seems to hang. If i then use task manager to stop the process, it records an error for Windows Explorer and then restarts explorer. The file is now in the recycle bin.

If i now open the recycle bin to empty the bin the same process occurs. Again when i have caused Windows Explorer to restart the Recycle bin is empty.

I have tried the deletion of the recycle bin - to have Vista create a new one, which it does but this does not solve the problem i have.

Any help would be most grateful.

Had problems with Spyware Detector and Max Secure so I uninstalled both. But now the bugaboo SDEarly Delete can't be located, now occur.

Found several .dll files that can't be deleted. I tried SPYBOT and it turned my hd into shambles. Good thing everything was backed up prior to running SPYBOT.

I believe the SDEarly delete problem is located in one of the DLL's that can't be deleted. Can't see anything in the recycle folder either. Researching the Internet turned up nothing effective. I think that Spyware Detector AND Spybot are pure garbage and criminal. Has anyone had success in deleting those files effectively and permanently?

Yeah, you should of let it remove the registry keys. You should also use Super Antispyware. It removes Smitfraud malware and the malware that often accompanies it. Install Super Antispyware free. Run it in safe mode. Allow it to quarantine whatever it finds. http://www.superantispyware.com/

Are you sure you are deleting the files and not only the shortcuts to the files?

If you are sure the file is NOT what the message says it is, use "Unlocker" to accomplish the delete.

When I open a folder and select several files to delete (let's say 3 PDFs, 2 XLS and a DWG) then click Delete on one of them, a dialog box opens that says opening a large number of files may take a long time.

If I click cancel, they aren't deleted. If I click OK (the other choice I am given) then each of the files is opened all at once. When I close them, then they are deleted.

This behavior occurs with my XP Pro SP3 computer when deleting files from the local HD and also with mapped network drives. It doesn't happen everytime I delete files, it is sort of unpredictable.

Is it possible that your antivirus is preventing you from getting infected by deleting malicious files?

A couple days ago I realized there was something going on with my PC when I tried to delete something. The thing is, the file is deleted, but it doesn't get moved to my recycle bin. I don't know where it goes really..very strange. Anyone know what the problem could be? I was reading up in an attempt to fix this myself and I saw there was some talk about deleting the recycled folder but I can't find it. And I've done virus scans and everything else

I've come across a pretty strange hard drive problem. The model number of the drive is SAMSUNG SP8004H.

The drive has been filled with whatever random things i can find to fill it with so I decided to delete a few things to make room for new files. It starts out having 1 gig of 80 gigs free. I proceed to shift-delete a 5 gig folder and try to download something new but the drive still reads as full... exactly the same amount of space free/used.

I try again with another 5 gig folder. Same thing. Weird. So I check all my recycling bins... all empty. The drive (which i only use for music or video files) doesn't have any hidden files on it, and I double checked that too. At first i tried restarting... maybe just a fluke error, but that didn't help. Then I did a defrag, and a disk check, but nothing showed up as being wrong. The drive reads as being healthy and I can access all the data on it perfectly fine.

Any help regarding this problem would be greatly appreciated! If not, it looks like my 80 gig hard drive suddenly became a giant CD-ROM.

Hi all,

This is a typical "user in trouble finds a forum and asks questions in the first post"-post.
But I hope it's ok and someone could give me a suggestion. Thanks in advance.

The problem is that Altbinz screwed up in it's temp folder. I was downloading some files with a total size of about 500-600MB when Altbinz started to get slow, so I decided to pause all downloads and restart the program. The downloads never finished and I ended up with a big mess in the temp folder. Now I cant'delete it.

The disk on which this folder is, is an external 1TB USB drive. So I guess I can't use the "MoveOnBoot" program.

Here is some more info on my OS:

I made the following screenshots to clarify. In some of the screenshot I highlighted the relevant info in red.

Screenshot 1.
This is the actual problem. Windows says the temp folder is 77.9GB but it's impossible that I downloaded 77.9 GB in just 20 minutes.

Screenshot 2.
None of these folders can be opened.

Screenshot 3.
None of these folders can be renamed.

Screenshot 4.
Ok, so let's try to delete the files in the folder...

Screenshot 5. (sorry for the size)
Let's see the properties of a random file. This file seems to be from the future ! And it's 1.44GB, no wait, it's 0 bytes... windows seems to be clueless

Screenshot 6.
Windows seems to be clueless about the folders too. An empty folder from the future with a size of 2.20GB

The 77.9 GB is virtual, its not actually using up that memory...Run a virus scan and see if it detects anything, if it detects well and good else you'll have to use some other third-party software to get rid of that junk..

I just recently hooked up a new hard drive and did a fresh install of windows server 2003. I now have an old hard drive, both are hooked up to my computer, with a windows xp install on it. I've successfully retrieved my important files from that old hard drive, but now i want to delete the things on it that i dont want, like the Documents and Settings folder, the Program Files folder, and the WINDOWS folder. It doesn't give me an error when I try to delete them, rather, nothing happens. The files remain and no matter how many times I try to delete them it doesnt work...any idea why this is happening and how to get around it? Thanks!

Hello richpodraza

If you want rid of everything why dont you just fdisk the drive and reformat? If your using that slave drive as just storage you dont need to put an O.S. on it just format it.
