turn off mcafee and turn on defender in windows 10

Q: turn off mcafee and turn on defender in windows 10

I want to discontinue use of McAfee (which came with the initial install) of my Windows 10 computer, and turn on Windows Defender. I don't know where to start.

Preferred Solution: turn off mcafee and turn on defender in windows 10

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: turn off mcafee and turn on defender in windows 10

Open the start menu. Select "Control Panel". Select "Programs and Features". Find and select the McAfee program in the list then click "uninstall" at the top of the list. When it has finished uninstalling Windows Defender will activate itself.Go back to Control Panel again and select "Security and Maintenance" . In the security drop down list it should say Windows Defender is turned on.

A:Windows Defender will not turn on

Perform the following troubleshooting methods:Method 1:I would suggest you to make the “Windows defender Service” startup type to “Automatic”.Follow these steps:a. Press “Windows key + R” from keyboard.b. Type “services.msc” without quotes in the “Run” Window and hit enter.c. Search for “Windows Defender Service”.d. Make “Startup Type” to “Automatic”.e. Restart the computer and then check how it works.Method 2:Perform System File Check (SFC), and then check if this fixes the issue.Follow the steps:a. Press “Windows Key + Q” to open Charms Bar.b. Type “cmd” without quotes in the search box.c. On the left pane, right click on the “cmd” option and select “Run as Administrator”.d. Type ‘sfc /scannow’ without quotes and hit enter.Note: It may ask for windows installation DVD to fix and to enable SFC to make more than minor repairs. Some files saved on your computer might get deleted when fixing corrupted files.

For some reason, Windows isn't letting me activate Windows Defender even though I have no installed antivirus (as the below log reflects). I get a message that some program I've installed keeps me from doing it. If I try to go through the Action Center, hitting "Turn On Now" just opens system32 in Windows Explorer.

What could be causing this? My school requires us to have some "SafeConnect" program on our computer in order to connect to the internet there, but I uninstalled it as I'm home for the weekend and am trying to figure out why this is happening. Thanks.

Windows Defender - Turn On or Off in Windows 8

Hi guys!

I'm new to the forums (first post) so please be kind, haha!

I have recently built a PC myself and had no issues whatsoever, until the other day when an Action Centre notification popped up. For some reason, Spyware and Virus protection have both turned off automatically and when I am prompted to turn them back on, I get an error saying "Action Centre can't turn on Windows Defender. Please try again later."

I have tried the services.msc method and tried to activate WinDefend that way, but encounter another error "Windows could not start the WinDefend service on Local Computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified."

I have looked up this issue with no resolution yet - as most of the solutions are for people that have installed third party Protection Programs like AVG, Norton etc.

I haven't installed any programs like that, and have also checked in the Control Panel to make sure one didn't install itself automatically with an install of another program.

If anyone could help me out with some tips, that would be greatly appreciated.

A:Cannot turn on Windows Defender

Hey mate,

This is not a solution to your problem, but hear me out. Consider another AV for a moment. I used to use Defender exclusively until I met Avast!, which runs faster than Defender and is better at catching malware, as numerous tests show. So I would recommend installing both Avast! and another program called Mbam from Malwarebytes.org. Use both of their full scans to check your computer for infection (because defender was somehow disabled).

Then, either we can try to fix defender, or you can stick with Avast! The choice, is yours.

Hello group

How can I turn off Windows defender and keep it off? Don't worry this computer never goes online and when it does I'll turn Windows defender back on.

My computer is set up as administrator and user. I always use the user side but I cannot turn Windows defender on or off from that side. I must always go back over to the administrator side, turn it off and go back to the user side. I have turned off Windows defender on the administrator side but when I turn the PC back on in the morning Windows defender defaults on.

Is there a way that I can turn it off from the administrator side and don't have to worry about it defaulting back on again when I reboot.

Thank you

I looked through all the security settings and cant seem to locate any option to disable WD.

After Norton expires, restart (reboot) the system. Defender should automatically turn on. Opening Defender (in search, type DEFENDER. App will be at top) should look like this.

If Defender is off, it will look like this. Click Turn On. You may also receive a notification banner in lower right of desktop.

As a side note, if Norton is set to expire in a couple of weeks (around month end), you may want to consider just disabling it now and uninstalling and setting up Defender. On 8/02/16, there is a major Windows 10 update scheduled. Just a suggestion to avoid having to deal with both at the same time. TC

I'm running 8.1.

When I try to run Windows Defender through services (since it is set to manual and turned off), I get the following message:

Windows could not start the Windows Defender Service service on Local Computer.

Error 577: Windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damanged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown device.

I can't get Windows Defender to start through the Action Center. When I turn it on, it just brings me to the system32 folder.

Any ideas? Do I need to do a clean install? I used to have avast installed, but have uninstalled it. If I can't get windows defender to work should I install something else?

EDIT: I am running malwarebytes anti-malware. Do you think there's a conflict there?

A few problems have occurred, I click on the windows defender icon and the "windows defender has been switched off" message appears. I go to the action centre and the system 32 folder appears.
I try the command prompt method to enable windows defender and it also does not work
I try running a scan via command prompt and it tells me some corrupt files have been found
I have also tried changing the start up setting from manual to automatic but I cannot seem to do this as the option is greyed out
Is malware causing the prevention of windows defender being switched on? Bearing in mind my computer has recently had a reboot and also works at top speed.

I got a new antivirus called Bitdefender that I bought at a store. I needed something better than what I have.

I've spent more than two hours on trying to fix this mess. I did several fixes that did not work at all.

It was working last night then I decided to refresh my PC. I installed several programs including drivers, windows updates and Malware Bytes (No Anti-virus installed).

Today, I found out Windows Defender was not working. I did try launching it from search, action center, and attempted to manually start which clearly didn't work. It is set to automatic in services. All other tabs such as Update, History, and Setting are greyed out.

I always get the response "The service couldn't be started. This programs service has stopped. You can start the service manually or restart your computer, which will start the service."

I also deactivated UAC.

I have an Acer laptop computer running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. I use Microsoft Security Essentials as my anti-virus and anti-malware programs (I believe that Windows Defender is part of MSE). Last night I opened the Action Center and under the Security section, looked at the status of MSE and Windows Defender. The status window showed me that MSE was "On" but Windows Defender was "Off". I selected it and then clicked the button to turn it on, but the status remained "Off". I closed the Action Center and a short time later an information window popped up telling me that Windows Defender had stopped working. I was informed that I could restart it by rebooting, which I did. After the reboot, I looked in the Action Center again and saw that it was still in the "Off" state.
I decided that the program might have gotten corrupted somehow, so I decided to uninstall MSE and then download it again and reinstall. I did this and everything went fine. However, the Action Center still told me that Windows Defender was "Off" and I still couldn't turn it on.
The only reason that I could think of for this is that there is some other anti-malware program running. About a year ago, I purchase Malwarebytes and installed it on my main desktop computer, and I thought that I had also installed it on the laptop as well, but if I go into Programs and Features, there is no evidence of it. Best explanation for this is right here:
It's not really a problem, neither with Norton nor with Microsoft Security Essentials. It's by design.
Microsoft Security Essentials, AVG, Norton, and McAfee all turn off Defender. That's good, not bad. Not only is there potential conflict, but there's no reason to have both; they all essentially have something very similar to Defender built into them, and running both at once will hurt your performance and create the risk of problems as they conflict with each other.
Even if this wasn't the case, I wouldn't worry too much about it.  Windows Defender sucks anyway.

I was recently given a Toshiba laptop with Windows 8 installed.

I would like to use Windows Defender as the real time virus protection.
I have installed MBAM and Spybot S&D.
Windows Firewall is turned ON.
I used Norton's tool to uninstall the Norton products, but it did not fully work and I had to use the uninstall program feature for some components.

I have spent a full day trying to turn ON Windows Defender, and reading posts in many forums.

When I go to the Action Center, it tells me that Defender is turned off. When I hit the button to turn it on, the button does not seem to activate.

I have a message in my system tray to turn on Virus Protection.

I am not comfortable messing with Registry keys based on random recommendations I have seen online; would do so with your direction!l

My questions are :
1) I like defender because it is lightweight and effective. Can you help me turn it on?
2) Would you recommend something else instead?
thanks so much in advance,

Do you have a 3rd party AV program installed? Usually a new OEM PC will come with a trial AV program installed.

Some 3rd party antivirus (AV) programs may turn off Windows Defender when they are installed to be used instead, and will not allow Windows Defender to be turned back on until the 3rd party AV has been completely uninstalled.

Running Windows 8.1 on Dell XPS bot last fall. Have been running Windows Firewall and Window Defender from the beginning.

Last week, "Solve PC Issues" notifications on bottom bar indicated Windows Defender turned off. Clicked the "Turn On Now" button. Got following pop-up message:
An error has occurred in the program during
initialization. If this problem continues please
contact your administrator. Error code 0x80073b01

Went to control panel > system and security > action center. Same message in notifications. Clicked "Turn on Now" from there - same result. Also tried to turn on as administrator (I am the moron administrator). Same result.

I never ran another anti virus program on this computer. None are listed among programs for deletion (maybe one came with, but I don't see it and never activated it). I did not ever turn off Defender. I do have the Spybot free program installed, but that has been on since beginning of February with no problems, and I think it only runs manually when I do a scan (it is more anti-malware I think, not full always running anti-virus).

Suggestions? Help? (Please). Thanks, Lazlo

So basically the issue is this: I suspected my computer was infected with Malware about a week ago, so I installed the free military Mcafee edition that they give us. The problem seemed to go away until, well, I was continually disconnected from a video game that I play online. This is when I realized that I wasn't able to turn on either of these firewalls.

I tried using Windows' forums, but their anti-virus software detected NOTHING on my computer. I also tried command prompts and admin files looking for the Windows firewall, but it doesn't exist. I'm kind of desperate to fix this computer because it has information on it, plus I don't want to buy another one.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Guys,

Running windows 10 with the build in windows defender.
recently (in the last few days) a message keeps popping up that no virus software is running and that I should turn it back on.
I tried, but the option to turn it back on is greyed out, I ran a Microsoft antivirus scanner and it came back clear.
I obviously need to turn Defender back on, but have no clue how to

Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Cheers for reading

A:windows defender won't turn back on

found the problem

I installed Spybot S&D. because of that Windows thinks there is another anti virus software installed and disables Defender. Uninstalling Spybot S&D automatically enabled Defender again

I am running Windows 7 Pro and have downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials.

Thnere is just no way can I turn Defender ON and having Googled everywhere and followed all the recommendations, I have given up on it! From the number of hits on Google, this is obviously a common problem ...........

Point is, do I really need it with MS essentials installed? This seems to cover most of the security issues so maybe Defender is not necessary any more ........ ?

Thanks in anticipation .....................

Windows defender turned on when i didnt need or want it to. there Isn't a turn off button other than in gpedit.msc.
win+r to run gpedit.msc, says it cant find it. I even looked where the msc should be and its not there.

A:No gpedit.msc, cant turn of windows defender.

Group Policy and gpedit.msc are only in Windows 10 Pro and above. If the version is shown as Windows 10 with no other designation it will be the home edition that does not have it. It cannot be added. It is not just gpedit.msc but the infrastructure that supports it that is missing.

I am trying to turn on Windows Defender with no success. I click on the works turn on Windows Defender but it just keeps going on and on. I tried downloading it again with the wizard but it said it said the wizard was interrupted and try again when I do it does the same thing. i tried downloading it from the Windows site and after downloading the pop up said "You do not need to install this software because Windows Defender is included in Windows Vista (I have Windows 7) You can access Windows Defender from the security section of the Windows Control Panel". Again, I tried this but when I click on the words "turn Defender on" it just keeps going on and on without doing anything. HELP!

Hi, My grandparents recently bought a new computer running Windows 8 that came with a couple of free months of norton antivirus. We don't want to pay for the subscription now so I just want to use the inbuilt Windows Defender antivirus (I have been told that this is decent enough for antivirus/spyware/malware etc). I uninstalled Norton using add/remove programs in control panel but now when I try to turn on Windows Defender it gives an error message. Im not with the computer now so I can't say exactly what the error was but it had something to do with not being able to turn on because there is another antivirus program running (but there isn't).

Any help on what I can do to get Windows Defender to turn? They currently have no protection at all :/

A:Solved: Windows 8 Defender won't turn on

If you uninstalled the trial version of Norton that came in that Windows 8 computer, you need to download and save and then run its removal tool so it can find and remove the leftover file and registry "debris" from the uninstall.

While attempting to install Avira AntiVirus, it informed me that Windows Defender was running and that I should turn it off. I open Defender and attempt to click on Tools but there is no response and the Tools icon is grayed out. Googled and came up with no remedy to this problem so here I am.

Anyone have a suggestion how I can turn off this program and/or get the Tools icon to be active?

Problem OBE- Tools icon now works. Must have been magic!

When you go to turn off defender, a message tells you, " You can turn this off temporarily, but if it's off for a while we'll turn it back on automatically."

First problem I have is with grammar. The folks at Microsoft should know NOT to use a coma and the word But next to each other as they mean the same thing.. grammatically this is wrong and redundant. This reads as major unprofessional.

Second problem is the language, it's rude. Who The Hell does Microsoft think they are not being gentile about this 180 change of events. People aren't gonna be happy about this change in policy for defender but they sound so flip about it.

Third problem is of course this app is not critical to the operation of the operating system (it's an extra offered for your use but in no way critical.) I can and should be able to replace this software with any anti-virus I choose. If Microsoft demands they have the right to turn on this unwanted software whenever they like then it WILL cause problems for other anti-virus software or apps I wish to run. I need to disable this completely so Microsoft cannot turn it back on. Whats the hack for this fix?

I just uninstalled Mcafee Security Suite following their instructions for Win 10.  I now can not get Defender to turn back on.
I get a pop up saying another program is disableing Defender.
I was not aware Emsisoft would block/disable Defender. At the moment Emsisoft is the only security program I have left running.
Any ideas?

A:Windows Defender will not turn back on.

Since Windows 8/10 Defender includes anti-virus protection, it typically is disabled by the installation of a third-party anti-virus program...in your case McAfee Security Suite probably disabled it to begin with. However, uninstalling McAfee was not enough. Emsisoft Anti-Malware is an antivirus platform that includes anti-malware protection...EAM combines its technology with Bitdefender Anti-Virus. Windows Defender will remain disabled until that EAM has been completely uninstalled. After removal of the third party anti-virus, Windows 8/10 Defender needs to be activated if you choose to use it. When uninstalling the third-party anti-virus Defender should automatically turn on. In some cases you may receive a message indicating your system has no protection...click here to turn on Windows Defender. If not, and Defender remains disabled, you will need to manually turn it on.Since you are using Emsisoft, there is no need for Windows Defender.
