"Recording" streaming video

Q: "Recording" streaming video

I was watching a television programme via a television station's web site and the programme started in Microsoft's Media player by default. I had the choice, however, to watch it in RealPlayer instead.
Now, is it possible to save this streaming file onto my PC so I can watch it at later time, when I'm not on-line? For instance, I would like to connect it to my TV but cannot be on-line there.
Or have this feature been disabled for copyright reasons?
Or is it just that I don't understand how to do it?
Anyone who can enlighten me?

Preferred Solution: "Recording" streaming video

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: "Recording" streaming video

You may not be able to copy the streaming video, but if you look around in your temporary internet files, you'll find it there. It would help if you knew the name of the file, but if you don't, you can just hunt for it then send it to My Documents.

So this problem is sort of difficult to explain, my audio tears. That is, while it is streaming it will sort of robot (get metallic) and stutter. This problem also shows up in my video while playing online games, the screen will freeze momentarily.

I have ran a complete norton scan, CC cleaner etc. I have also defragged and error checked my drive with no results other than the normal tracking cookies, and a few fragments. Additionally I also ran the windows 7 driver update tool, and individually checked them through the device manager; nothing.

Thinking the problem might have been my ethernet cable I replaced this. The issue still occured, so I swapped cables with my wife, and still no fix. I also tried both cables on different ports on my router (ie. I connected to a different port with each cable) and still no fix.

No one else in the house has the problem. Further, I should be getting 50Mb service, while downloading (or running speedtest.net) I get 1-2. I'm leaning toward the problem being with my ethernet card? I ran a continuous ping test on the cmd window while playing, and it seems that I am getting "random" latency spikes that coincide with the roboting/stuttering. Latency will pop up to 500-800 and than drop to normal 3-10.

Just thought that I would check here and see what people thought before grabbing a new ethernet card.

Have you performed a speedtest from another computer for comparision? You can also run the same ping test from another computer while testing?

Verify the NIC settings: Start / Control Panel / Network and Sharing Center / there is a link for the "Local Area Connection". You can view the speed. There is a "Diagnose" button for Windows to check the connection and in the properties you should be able to view the speed and duplex settings which should be 100/Full or 1000/Full depending on your hardware.

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

whenever i clicked on a large video file in explorer (running xp sp2 on inspiron 6000), explorer would crash. i found a tip online to run "regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll" and that fixed the problem completely.

however, this fix created a new problem - - now all the info that used to be under "Audio" or "video" is gone! any fix? "date modified" is still there, but i like to sort my video folders by artist, and now it does me no good.

by the way, when i now click on an avi's properties, summary tab, and go to advanced, all the needed info is missing from there too.

from doing a search, i see that the way to undo the original fix is to run "regsvr32 shmedia.dll", but then i think i will have errors with large avi's.

so, any other fix?

Hi All, Happy New Year!

First time posting... On 1/3/08 i ended up with a bunch of viruses on my computer. From what I can gather they are bad news. I down loaded PC Tools to do a search and found a bunch of Trojans and other nasties...

I have uploaded a screen shot of the PC Tools scan...

In the "C:\Program Files\Video Add On" folder the following can't be deleted:

In the "C:\Program Files\Helper" folder the following was found:

What is this? Do I need the file in Helper?

Please help!

PS: I am not a techno savvy guy. I kinda know what is going on but only enough to get myself into trouble and not be able to get out! I tried a few things to get rid of them but was unsuccessful.

From what I have seen I will be here for a bit. Thanks in advance.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

You can do it with HyperCam. It'll record the action as an .AVI file which you can play back with Media Player.

Here is the full error when I try to record:

"Another application is recording audio. Stop recording with this other application and then try to record with Sound Recorder again." I have turned off all of the start up programs, restarted my computer, and even uninstalled TotalRecorder, which I thought was causing the problem.

My motherboard has on board audio which I disabled in my bios in order to use my recording sound card. This worked flawlessly for over 2 years. Then sometime last year Windows installed my "Missing HD Audio Driver" which disabled all sound until i enabled the on board sound in the bios again, this of course meant i couldnt use my recording card.

All Windows and driver updates have been turned off, it still installs.

My apologies if this had already been addressed in a different thread, but I could not find an answer to my issue anywhere.

I want to be able to record "What u hear". Every thread I have read states the same thing. Control panel> sound> Recording tab> right click> Show disabled devices.

This does not display my sound card, so I am unable to enable it as my default recording device. It doesn't change anything, all I see is my laptop microphone.

I have resorted to plugging a 3.5mm (1/4") double adapter and a male to male cable between audio out to mic in, to enable recording whilst being able to listen to what I'm doing.

Please help!

Hey guys, I made a thread a few years ago about me recording with a Plantronics 380 while using a dolby 5.1 usb soundcard to make the volume louder so people can actually hear me and getting a bit of static issues while recording as heard by the attachment I added with this post.

Now recently at PAX AUS I won a Corsair H2100 wireless headset but whenever I plug it in I get static/snow sounding interference and I have no idea on how to solve it while using corsairs software. They've
told me to send it in as they think it could be a defective product but im doubtful. But if I got a replacement and the same issue occurs I don't think I would be able to sell the headset on something like Ebay.

http://www.gamingcapacity.com/wp-con...com380-911.jpg -Plantronics 380 headset

Any ideas? I would prefer my first issue to be solved first before the corsair if possible thanks

A:Static when recording as well as a new wireless headset "snow" problem

A wireless device is a digital device and its up to the support software, e.g. the Corsair software to amplify or do whatever to the signal. The PC's sound card is not used with digital (the sound card converts analog to digital).

As its wireless, there are possibilities for interference from other wireless devices or even wireless/cell telephones.

e.g. I bought a Logitech Wireless mouse and keyboard. They had interference problems and did not work well. I replaced that with a Microsoft wireless mouse and keyboard, which apparently works on a different frequency and it works OK.

On my old Xp, using a cheapy microphone (plugged into sound card), I successfully overdubbed one guitar part onto another with no perceived loss in quality. I had a SB card and used "record what u hear" which I assumed took it directly from the card BEFORE it hit the speaker (i.e. it's recording the amalgam of any sound from the PC that hits that sound card at that instant).

On my W7 PC (integral soundcard), I have tried BOTH a webcam and a 3.5mm soundcard direct microphone.

So, I record 5 seconds of guitarplaying using either Sound Recorder OR my Logitech Webcam software (muting the video).

I then play that 5-seconds using WINDOWS EXPLORER preview and then record that again (adding NO other part). Using either webcam or the 3.5mm microphone, the second recording comes out horribly phase shifted (you almost can't tell its a guitar).

Any suggestions? I've tried all the combos I can think of. I have BOTH speakers and recording set to 192000-bit (i.e. they match).

Additionally, on my sound RECORDING tab, what is SPDIF? Is that akin to "what u hear"?

A:Overdubbing - 2nd recording sounds "phase shifted"

My guess there's a signifcant latency in the sound card hardware, most likely because it's onboard audio and not a dedicated sound card.

Second, S/PDIF is a data link layer protocol and a set of physical layer specifications for carrying digital audio signals between devices and components over either optical or electrical cable. The name stands for Sony/Philips Digital Interconnect Format

First off, I'm wondering if this is an issue related solely to my laptop, or if it might just be a Vista issue; I have a Toshiba P305D-S8995E laptop, and when I right-click the speaker icon in the system tray and select "recording devices", it only shows "Microphone" as an available option. I would like to have the option to record whatever audio is passing through the soundcard similar to the way I do it on my Win XP computers, therefore I assume I'm looking for some sort of "Line In" recording option. So is not having a "line in" option an issue with my laptop's soundcard, or is this a Vista issue? Thanks in advance for any help.

I've seen various places say that this feature is still in "beta" and a work in progress, but I had a strange experience with it yesterday, and I'm confused as to what's going on.

Up until yesterday, I was having what seems to be a common problem, in which when you hit the record button, it will act like it's recording for about ten seconds, then it will stop and say that there's nothing to record (I've already gone through the process of selecting that option that you can say it is a game that you're recording).

Yesterday, however, it seemingly started working properly. I was able to record several videos without that error occurring. The problem is, I attempted to record more later on in the evening, and once again, I started getting the same "ten second" error. I've tried again this morning, still getting the "ten second" error.

Anyone know what's up with this feature? Any idea why it seemed to work just fine yesterday morning, and then all of a sudden, it's back to not functioning correctly? I can't seem to discern any rhyme or reason for it. I've been trying to record from the same source that I successfully recorded from yesterday, so it's not like I've switched programs or anything.

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

Computer: Acer Aspire 5672WLMi notebook.
Recent issues: Hard Drive failure in May. New HD installed by warantee company (MicroMedics).

Things were going smoothly until about a month ago. I noticed that files (.wmv, .avi, .mp3) that I played on my system would get "stuck" and get choppy for a second, then play, then choppy, etc. Basically making the system unusable for anything audio. Some video images have the same issue, but it's mostly audio. I first noticed it after I installed RealPlayer, so I uninstalled RealPlayer, and then reinstalled all of my audio codecs. This same issue occurs when watching streaming videos, 90% of the time, but sometimes Youtube/etc play fine.

I've googled various things for the past month and none of them have resolved it: It's not just the speakers, because it occurs when I use the headset jack. Also found that it could be the battery, however when powering down and restarting without the battery in, it still occurs.

Not sure if it's malware or hardware related. PandaScan showed only one non-cookie related issue (dialer.su, related to software that I installed yesterday, very long after this problem started. I have since uninstalled the program (Switch) that included dialer.su).

Thanks in advance, I'm stumped.

but the system is giving me an "Error: Access is denied" response.
what I have typed:
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.3.9600]
(c) 2013 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
C:\Windows\system32>cd /d D:\
D:\>fsutil.exe 8dot3name set 0
The registry state is now: 0 (Enable 8dot3 name creation on all volumes).
D:\>fsutil file setshortname "Program Files" PROGRA~1
Error:  Access is denied.
And I try it in Safe Mode.It is also "Access is denied.".
Can someone
help me?

Hi TimFF,
This might be related with the UAC settings, check this thread:
give full permission for the users in program
files folder
The steps in the above thread is not recommended.
For the short name usage, we may consider to create a directory-junction from
PROGRA~1 to C:\Program Files:
With the following commands:
mklink /J "C:\PROGRA~1" "C:\Program Files"

Since the win10 forums doesn't have a sound/audio sub-forum, I guess this is the spot.

So I've got the old volume mixer back, but it does not have the drop-down for inputs? With 4 various inputs now being forced drill down to the speaker cpl every time you want to set volume/mute/unmute an input, well that's a truly ridiculous regression in usability, I don''t suppose there is a reg hack to get the drop back??

I really don't get how things like this pass committee, "all in favor of putting the most useless volume mixer since dos in our flagship product?? Ok, the eyes have it, now get back to work we've got a lot removing., diminishing and disabling to do before this "upgrade" is ready!!"

Bought brand new one WD "My Passport" Ultra 1TB, plugged it in to my laptop "Lifebook" A Series running window 7.with supplied short lead.
followed instructions, formatted drive, instigated back up of total hard drive from laptop to Passport everything seemed to munch away for about 40mins or more, when finished I opened the passport file on the laptop to view that it had the contents to find it was empty.
tried again with same result.
What am I doing wrong? please be kind! I'm not a technophobe but I do seem to get tied into an "electronic loop" on a regular basis and don't know the computer jargon words or what abbreviations mean.
Thanks in advance

A while back, I installed Creative MediaSource on my old PC, and could do "What U Hear" recording (recording exactly what would come out of the speakers). Now, I have installed CMS on my new PC (from the SAME disk), and I can't do "What U Hear" Recording. What gives? Can someone help me to do "What U hear" recording on my new computer?

Hi Kenmcfa

In case it's just a small detail you might have missed in the setup, here are some guides and question-and-answer pages from Creative -- in case you haven't seen these yet.

Otherwise, I guess we'll have to wait for a user or tech who has experience with your program [I'm more familiar with Pro Tools on the Mac (my brother-in-law is a recording engineer) - so this is the first I've heard of Creative's program. . . . Looks pretty useful, from the info on their site]

Best of luck

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to help my dad fix a problem with his Windows 7 Home Premium x64 Toshiba Satellite P775-S7100. When he's using a piece of software for his work called Epic, he tries to record dictations on a microphone but this error always comes up: "MCI Error: Error starting new recording. All wave devices that can record files in the current format are in use. Wait until a device is free then try again. Command=record dictation overwrite. Command return string="

Any advice on this would be amazing. All of the advice I have found about this problem is in regards to XP. Thanks in advance.

A:"Error Starting New Recording" Windows 7

I see what this program is, for medical dictation. I assume the version he has is Windows 7 compatible and not an older Win XP program. First step would be to contact the program vendor to check that it is set up correctly. I see that it also incorporates Dragon Naturally Speaking, a voice recognition program and maybe that is where the problem is?

I have followed thoroughly various tutorials for setting up OBS for streaming. Initially I had set it up for Youtube, then switched to Twitch. This works fine. I have absolutely no complaint with that. Streaming out to these platforms is working as I would like.
This issue I'm experiencing is what I can best describe as a pulsing or jumping, about once per second when I play a file back that I have recorded (not streamed) with OBS.

The audio is flawless, no stuttering, nothing like that. Audio BR is at 160...

As I watch the status information in OBS as I am recording, I see no warning about overloaded encoder, the frame rates are where they are supposed to be, no dropped frames. everything should appear to be good. CPU load is unremarkable, again plenty of headroom. It doesn't seem to matter if I increase bit rate, decrease bit rate, CBR, VBR, increase or decrease framerate, or which software i use to view the output fine: VLC, WMP, whatever, there is this pulsing. Its just enough to be annoying. Its subtle, but it's there. And it doesn't matter which PC I play the file on ( I have a few I can test it with)

The computer running OBS is more than adequate for the task.

I have - in an effort to improve things - changed recording format, changed encoder, even the location to which I was saving it ( initially that was a network drive, but I change to an internal SSD for test purposes) I can not get rid of this.

This is just for a little pet project, I ... Read more
