HELP! Having Trouble Deciding on a Laptop for School

Q: HELP! Having Trouble Deciding on a Laptop for School

Hi, so I'm in the process of purchasing a laptop for University and was hoping someone could help me out with a couple questions I have.

1) How does the AMD Turion? 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-56 (1.8GHz/1MB), perform against the Mobile AMD Sempron? Processor 3500+? Would both perform well for a school laptop?

2) How much better is the ATI RADEON® Xpress1270 HyperMemory? than the ATI RADEON® Xpress1150 with 256MB HyperMemory? Would both be good enough for basic office and internet use?

3) Is the AMD Turion? 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-56 (1.8GHz/1MB) with the ATI RADEON® Xpress1270 HyperMemory? worth about 150$ more than the Mobile AMD Sempron? Processor 3500+ and ATI RADEON® Xpress1150 with 256MB HyperMemory? Should I not bother with the upgrade for 150$?

Thanks in advance for helping me out. Most of this stuff goes right over my head!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

1. A sempron is a much older (single core chip). The turion is far better.

2. Any laptop is capable of graphics for basic office and internet use. Even cheap ones.

3. yes. Ensure you maximize the RAM on any laptop you buy. It would also be wise to buy a faster rpm hard drive.

4. Please post in the correct forum next time. (mobile computing)

Hey guys,

I've gone mobile because of work, and so I've had to sell off my massive desktop in favor of something more airplane-able.

I've narrowed it down to three very similar options, and I was wondering what the community thought:

Lotus P150EM
Display: 15.6" 1920 x 1080 FHD LED Backlit Matte Display
Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-3630QM, 6MB L3 Cache, 2.4-3.4GHz
Memory: (8GB) 8192MB, PC3-12800/1600MHz DDR3 - 2 SO-DIMM
Graphics Card: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 670MX (Kepler) 3GB GDDR5

Lenovo IdeaPad y500
Display: 15.6" FHD LED Glossy Wedge 1920x1080
Processor: 3rd Generation Intel Core i7-3630QM Processor( 2.40GHz 1600MHz 6MB)
Memory: 16.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3 SDRAM 1600 MHz
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT750M GDDR5 2GB w/ SLI NVIDIA GeForce GT750M GDDR5 2GB

Display: 17.3" High-definition widescreen LED-backlit TFT-LCD (1920 x 1080)
Processor: Intel® 3rd Generation Core™ i7 2.4GHz (with Turbo Boost up to 3.4GHz) (pretty sure it's the i7-3630QM)
Memory: 8GB DDR3
Graphics: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 670MX (Kepler) 3GB GDDR5

Really sorry if this is in the wrong place! Any thoughts, suggestions, etc, are appreciated.

i have been looking for really good board and new processor, i currently have a stock board with phenom 2 x4 3.4ghz black. for some time ive been wanting an i 7, but then i saw the phenom 2 x4 3.7ghz black. i tend to see allot of people who in my opinion are kindof intel fanboys and go a little overboard, i like the i7 2600k, but benchmarks can be done poorly and an opinion isnt saying much if its totaly bagging on the other. so the two things im looking at are.

Newegg.com - ASRock 990FX Extreme3 AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI BIOS
Newegg.com - AMD Phenom II X4 980 Black Edition Deneb 3.7GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Desktop Processor HDZ980FBGMBOX

i dont need to know if they are the best, but i am getting fed up with how much the price keeps going up with the intel stuff, seems every time i look they have somthing better for 5 times more. if you know of any reasonable priced am3 chips that could be better for close to the cost i would appreciate it. and some info on the matter from someone who may have tryed both chips (intel i7 2600k or amd 4x 3.7ghz) or know about both would be appreciated

A:looking to upgrade, but am having trouble deciding

also guess i never asked, is the processor even a step up from my 3.2? i would think it would be a drastic increase, but i could be wrong

Im going to be starting college this year and I have no idea what pc build to get ( i narrowed it down two) basically what ill be doing is trying to get it to run fallout 4 with mods when they start coming out regularly, photo editing, watching/streaming videos, and taking some classes online when work doesnt permit to.

First build
AMD FX-4300, PowerColor Radeon R9 380, Thermaltake Commander MS/I Snow Edition (White/Black) - budget AMD FX build for light gaming - icebergslim64's Saved Part List - PCPartPicker

Second build

Intel Core i5-6400, PowerColor Radeon R9 380, Thermaltake Commander MS/I Snow Edition (White/Black) - Skylake i5 build - icebergslim64's Saved Part List - PCPartPicker

Which one would best suit me for my goals, I tried other forums but it devolved into a intel vs amd argument and didnt get an answer. Hope that doesnt happen again 😧

About six weeks ago I had an issue with my computer that seems to be related to an update downloaded at that time. I had Automatic Update set to download and install updates automatically and after one such update, the computer instructed me to restart which I did.
All went well until I logged in. The log in screen came up, I logged in and hit enter and the desktop started to load...and froze there. I restarted in safe mode and system restore failed. I called Dell and they walked me through diagnostics until they were fairly sure that it was not a hardware problem. I finally got it to reboot from the Windows disk that came with the computer, but the problem persisted. No error message, no lights, no beeps. Just frozen at the same place at the same time. In addition, each time I had to hold the power button down to reboot, my RAID array would have to 're-verify' the data on both disks which would take about 4 hours before I could even think of doing anything with the box.
Finally Dell had me restore the system from a partition on my hard drive which reset the computer to how it was from the factory... It worked fine till I downloaded the updates again. The last bunch included a Vista security update and a bunch of Office updates. I had to Factory Image reinstall again.
I have now shut off my Auto Update. It tells me that there are updates to download, but I have not done any of them in the last month. The computer works fine now. The only nagging issue is tha... Read more

Over the past week or so my PC has had a habit of crashing with notably the display switching off immediately and no mini-dumps being created. I decided to see whether a faulty was at work so I ran the driver verifier at least 4 - 5 times. Didn't take long for the results to show up. The system would soon BSOD when I logged in.

The results point towards possible USB driver problems but I don't know what I should do next as I don't want to do an action that can make things worse.

I've ran DM Log Collector and have attached the .zip file (hopefully it has been) to provide some info into this problem.

I've been having problems with my computer recently, and after I thought everything was taken care of, I can no longer gain acces to the server pages for my school (University of Iowa). The main page is www.uiowa.edu if that helps. I can get to the main page and also get to the main page of my webmail, but I cannot log in or go any deeper into the site. I've done everything I can think of including resetting my security features back to the default. If you have any suggestions it would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

having problems downloading any new programs (kodak picture printing, authorware player, etc,). My windows xp will only let me save these programs to disk. the option to save it to my desktop or anything else does'nt exist, when I click on it nothing happens. I'm not the best with computers and I used HiJack this and deleted what I thought were bad. I hope I did'nt delete something that allows me to download programs. I got 6 weeks worth of homework and 1 1/2 weeks to do it. I talked to the authorware people and the IT guy at my university ( for hours upon hours) and they want me to erase everything on my computer and start it over completly. Can you help me???

A:Downloading Trouble- Test Due For School- Help!

When it give you the option to save to disk is there a drop down box that allows you to select a drive? If so select the folder manually thru C:\ . Is the rest of your computer working OK? Do you have you XP disk? You may need to repair it thru the "REPAIR CONSOLE" if you are have more problems. If you can download and install the way I described, do that and we will "CHKDSK" form the "REPAIR CONSOLE" after your semister is over.
You are lucky you can even boot your computer. HJT it very dangerous to modify. That is why we don't recommend tweaking it without advice from the HJT Team.
Good luck and keep us up on your progress.

I just purchased a Toshiba Satellite C50 - A Series laptop at Best Buy. Geek Squad Guy installed the recommended Webroot security software. The primary purpose of this computer is to provide access to my Schoolteacher girlfriend's online Gradebook via her school system's website.

As recommended by her computer folks at school, we downloaded Java 7, both the 32 & 64 bit versions. Accessing the school website's "PowerTeacher" section was not a problem. The problem is getting into the actual Gradebook. As an alternative to directly accessing the Gradebook, the following instructions are provided:

Step 1: Download PowerTeacher Gradebook

An alternative method of launching PowerTeacher Gradebook is being provided by your PowerSchool administrator because the Java browser plug-in cannot be detected on your browser. (my caps).

Then there are a series of steps on how to download and unzip the Gradebook zip file to a convenient location, with an icon installed on the desktop as a shortcut. We tried that and were not successful.

Rather than be stuck using this "work around", assuming we could ever get it to work, we would love to be able to get access to the Gradebook directly via the website.

Any ideas on how to get the Java browser plug-in to be detected on the browser?

Are there any other issues that could be preventing a direct connection to the Gradebook?

Many Thanks!

I'm looking to get a laptop to basically replace my desktop PC. I really like the macbook pro, but I don't have the kind of money to buy it, and I'm not a big fan of apple or macs. I have also looked at HP, the pavilion dv5t series with the intel core 2 duo 8600 (2.4 Ghz), the 1680 x 1050 display (is the infinity screen nice?), 3GB memory, 512MB 9600 GT, 250 GB HDD. Here's the link if you want to see it http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/s...Versatile+performance&series_name=dv5t_series . These are really the only two I've looked at so far. I spend a lot of time online, and will also probably be doing some light gaming, and a lot of music and movies. I'd like to be in about the $1300 range when I'm done (although less is better). Any input would be great. Thanks.

A:Help deciding on a laptop

Your link doesn't work, although from the specs it doesn't look too bad. It'd be better going for one with an 8600 series video card, since it'd be cheaper and more suited to light gaming.

Hello everyone. I'm here asking for any recommendations for a soon-to-be college freshmen. Price range is about anything under $1,500 if need be. So I'll take any suggestions.

Also, what do you think about the Lenovo Y410 notebook or Lenovo 3000 Family N Series?

A:Deciding on a Laptop

Are you only going to be using it for college work and Internet browsing?
If so then here we would buy something around £250 - £400 ($500 - $800) is normally good enough for a college freshman.
I'm not sure on American pricing, But we have to pay 17.5% tax on our products here so they would be cheaper there. You probably wouldn't even have to spend as much as I've said.

Well, I have been thinging of getting a new laptop. My current laptop is still pretty good but, I am looking for more speed. I was thinking of a Dell XPS i7 system with 6GB Ram, 750GB 7200RPM HD, 2GB Graphics Card. Cost is about $1,100 and additional $120 to have Windows 7 Pro. My current laptop already has 7 Pro on it.

My Current system is a IBM (Lenovo) T61P. It has a Centrino vPro 2.4GHz Processor, 4GB Ram, 320GB 7200RPM HD and a 512 Dedicated Video Card.

Recently, I was talking to another friend and we were discussing the Solid State Drives and how fast they are. I had heard that you can load Photoshop almost instantly when running on a SSD. I am looking for some advice on whether I should buy the new laptop or get a SSD drive for my current system. Obviously, money is one of the issues here. Which solution would i get the biggest bang for my dollar. A 128GB SSD Drive will cost me about $150 and a HD Bay Caddie (so I can keep my 320GB HD in my Laptop for data storage) would cost about $30-$40.

Any thoughts would be appreciated

Thank You

3 months ago i got an hp elitebook workstation (i5 processor 8gb ram. nvidia graphics) when i took it home and installed crysis 2 to test its performance, the laptop shut down suddenly after about 5 minuts of playing, later i found out that playing a game while the laptop is charging makes it overheat quicker than it would already overheat without charging, but charging fires it up so quick to 100c° . anyway i turned it back and got my money after so much painful and pointless conversations. now i decided to get back out there again and try to snap a good laptop. my dad bought the hp elitebook i5 for himself, this one isn't workstation , it has a very poor graphic card with 64 mb dedicated memory. but the battery lasts for like 4 to 5 hours which is just amazing, but the graphics are crap, it cant play a 4k video from youtube./ i wonder if it can even play an 1080p video actually! anyway now i decided i will either get a dell latitude e6420 ( i5 processor . 4gb ram . intel hd 3000 ) or get a cheaper laptop like i3 or core duo because i don't see how useful an i5 processor would be with a very poor graphic card, basically all it can be used for is browsing , and i can do that with a core duo. cuz i have been reading a lot of articles and reviews and it seems like laptops with nvidia graphics tend to over heat, and some say that all laptops overheat if you play games , so what should i get, dell latitude e6420 or some core duo laptop or i3 laptop

I have a Toshiba Satellite A30 and have done for a good 3 years now, and its a great laptop, but its starting to get worn down. Its currently running XP Home SP2 and on 227MB ram, and thus an upgrade is in order. Thanks to the folks at Crucial, i can either get 2x1gig or 512 or a combo etc... The laptop has 2 slots. Im thinking that theoretically i should aim for a 2x1gig ram upgrade, but its very very expensive (for me ) and so i was wondering what an experts view would be on getting which. I could just get 512mb for a managable price so im around the 730Mb mark, -what performance improvements will be visible?

Is there anything else that isnt a wallet-ruining that i could invest in, i dont really think its worth getting a new one personally.

A:RAM advice, and help deciding how to/what to do to upgrade Toshiba Laptop!

adding RAM only improves performance is if you're lacking it to begin with. it does not make your computer any faster, but it will reduce the "bottleneck". tweaking windowsXP can significantly boost performance (and it's free) by turning off visual effects like fading, also stop programs from starting with windows. all those thing are resource hogs and use up your RAM when they don't need to. I would suggest you try to tweak your system before spending money on extra RAM.

as far as the total amount of RAM is concerned. you have a 256MB RAM stick in there now (some of it is used for onboard video, which is why you only see it at 227MB). generally 512MB is all most people will need, 1GB for gamers, 2GB for video editing, etc.

so bottom line IMO, buy another 256MB stick ($35 on crucial) which will double your total RAM to 512MB. And tweak your system so that it only runs needed programs and effects, instead of bogging down your system with junk you don't use.

good luck

Hello. There is not much we can do to help you here on the Laptop Audio discussion board. I suggest that you go to Dell_Robert P's profile page and send him a message. (Click on the link which should take you to his page. Then send him a message if you see "send a private message" link on the right side of the page. If not, then click the Add as Friend link and include your message.)
Robert P is the chief forum moderator, and will probably try to help you, although there may be a limit on what a moderator can do. You should include more concrete details about what happened than you put in your post here. It explains what happened but is a bit sketchy. Also include your laptop's service tag number, so he can look it up.

I'm thinking of getting a Laptop for school, but since Ive only ever brought/built desktops before, I'm not really sure what laptop would be best, only what I want from it and can afford...

-I can spend around £500.
-Needs to be powerful enough to run Visual Studio 2008 without any problems (VS08 is probs the most demanding app I'll use at school)
-At least Dx9 with pixel shader 3. Dx10 would be nice if possible
-If possible without spending too much I wouldn't mind being able to play games at decent settings (eg HL2:Episode 2) without lag

Ive had a look around but couldn't realy find anything useful to tell me if a laptop is capable of what I want or not...this looks like it may be more than capable, but I'm not really sure if thats the case, nor if it's actauly a good deal for £499...

Anyway, my laptop freezes a lot of times, especially when I haven't turned it off for a long time. This just doesn't happen with my school pc even if it's on 24/7. I was the one who installed windows 7 on both computers so they have almost the same programs installed (except maybe Connectify app in my laptop).

Now i'm wondering if I can still make my laptop perform faster or should I just buy a new one? My CPU usage meter indicates 87% of my ram is used. this is usually the case when i'm working. Do you think this will get faster if I upgrade the ram? i ... Read more

A:My 3.3 WEI computer in school is better than my 4.4 WEI laptop. why?

Do you think this will get faster if I upgrade the ram?Hello and Welcome -Most updated Windows7 computers will run about 4G RAM, rather than your current installed 2G RAM, so it would not hurt to upgrade this -If These TravelMate P243 Specs are the same / similar to yours, it includes Memory "Base RAM size 4 GB" -Part of Acer's business lineup, the TravelMate P243 features an Intel Ivy Bridge processor, 8GB of RAM, an HD webcam, and a 14-inch 1366 x 768 display. Availability date: Aug. 14, 2012 Also This Review says "Basic RAM is 4G" - So I would look at 4Gig as a standard setup.my laptop freezes a lot of times, especially when I haven't turned it off for a long time. << I would turn the computer off at least at the end of the day and save your work Personally only, I turn my laptop off every day (night) as it may be 2 or 3 days between using it, and I like to start fresh each time - Your choice there -Desktops and laptops are a bit different with shutdown times etc, but I still believe in turning them off when totally finished, and it only takes about 1 or 2 minutes to restart them for each session - Try this for a while, and clean out unwanted programs on a regular basis also -Regards -

So lets say I know that security is a joke in a way. I have a basic firewall. I have a router (with built in firewall) I have anti virus.

But... it slows my computer down so .... if I want to keep my computer safe when downloading files, browsing websites, this is a laptop so it will be going places at some point.

What do you rec. website or downloads for basic security? Is

Microsoft security essentials, windows firewall, and malware enough? In cunjunction with a router at home with a firewall?

I read about sand boxing and I do have avast (but I disabled it for speed issues) so what about running commando and so forth. I mean... it seems silly to install a ton of programs if it makes it so I can't even use the internet. Also is crome a safe browser or should I be using Firefox?

My fear is simply a virus that messes up my computer, someone getting into my email account and sending virus's out.. that kind stuff...

:P hehe just curious if there is a good website to read up on this stuff for.

If what I got will keep me safe from bios passwords and highjacking software im cool. I don't got anything worth stealing I don't order online or anything... so any info be great. (computer will be used for school soon though) don't want people messing with it for sure.... but at the same time important It doesn't get bogged down

A:so what if im parnoid? Keep my laptop safe at school

If you are not really sure if the a website is infected or not go here http://www.virustotal.com/ Using this website, you can check and verify if the website that you are trying to visit has a malware, rootkit, trojans, adware and spywares.

For some reason you need to delete your prefetch and temp files so that it will not cosume your computers memory (Performance problems.)

Click start, type on the start search or run "%temp%" without the quotation mark
Select all then hit delete. Noticed that some you can't delete all of them. Its fine. Just press skip.

Click start, type on the start search run. then on run type "prefetch" without the quotation mark
Select all then hit delete.

I'm going to buy a laptop for school use in college, but I'm not sure how to choose the right laptop, I know that the minimum amount of RAM should be at least 2GB and I also heard that i3, i5, i7's are good to use too. My friend also told me that Lenovo is a very good and trusted brand for laptops but what else should I look for? What other brands/manufactures for laptop are trustworthy? main question is what to look for so that it isn't going to be 'OUT' in a few years. Thanks a lot!

My laptop has XP Home, and when the computer guy when to put in the networks domain, he said there was no place to put in the domain only a work"group" which wouldn't work.

How do I go about getting it to work? He said there is a network card so it should be able to work, but he's not sure how to do it.

Is it even possible with the Home edition or do I need the Professional edition?
If it's possible what do we do?

Hey guys.

I want to get a laptop to use for school projects (like slideshows and videos), gaming (H2V, CS:S) and surfing the web (do people still say that?) and I'd like to hear from someone who knows more about it than me about how mush it would cost.

Here's an extensive list of what I'd like it to have:
- Windows Vista Home Premium (there's $300 already)
- At least a 3Ghz CPU
- Mid- to high-end graphics card (GeForce 8600 maybe)
- A good sound card (nothing fancy)
- At least a 120-160GB hard drive, reasonably fast (say 7200 RPM, is that fast?)
- At least 4GB of RAM
- A relatively small screen size (18-21") so I don't have to be carrying around a huge bag
- Decent networking capabilities (good enough to download stuff, play games online and use my school's wireless)

I hope I didn't miss anything. I don't know much about laptops so any advice or insight is helpful.

On Apple's website there's a thing where you can play with upgrades and a few other settings to customize your computer, and it tells you how much it would cost. But Macs are lousy for gaming so I tried to find a thing like that for PC laptops but had no luck.

A:How much can I expect to pay for a laptop for school and games?

Dude, how much are you planning on spending? Those are some pretty heavy specs for a lappy. I really don't think you need quite that specs for basic gaming (though definitely get someone else's opinion, I only know from what I've looked at and such). but try Dell, they've got some pretty good deals. however, if you really do want even higher specs, you might wanna try something like Alienware.
Again, I'm no expert, but for a lappy those are some pretty high end specs.

Oh yeah, lol. BTW, if I understood you right...you're talking 4-5 grand.

Haven't posted in a while. Well college is coming around and i NEED a laptop, I'll use it for notes, papers, projects, and homework, but that's not what I'm worried about

I'm very OCD about what I buy. I have around 1200-1500 to spend, and i want the best bang for my buck. I want a gaming laptop, that's at least somewhat solid, what am I looking at with that price range?

A:buying laptop for school/gaming help?

You're going to need more money for a good gaming laptop.

Ok I did a little searching and I found a list of mobile video devices.

Nvidia GeForce Go7600
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600
ATI Mobility Radeon X1700
Nvidia GeForce 8400M-GT
Nvidia GeForce Go7700
Nvidia GeForce Go7600GT
Nvidia GeForce 8600M-GS
Nvidia GeForce 8600M-GT
Nvidia GeForce Go7800
ATI Mobility Radeon X1800
Nvidia GeForce 8700M-GT
Nvidia GeForce Go7900GS
ATI Mobility Radeon X1900
Nvidia GeForce Go7800GTX
ATI Mobility Radeon X1800XT
Nvidia GeForce Go7900GTX
Nvidia GeForce Go7950GTX

Look for a laptop that you can afford with at least one of the above, 2GB of memory for Windows Vista and the mobility processor of your choice. The farther you go down the list the faster and more expensive the video will be. All the recognized brand names I saw where $2000.00 and up.

I am trying to install Windows 7 on my laptop because it was nearly crashed so I decided to reinstall it. When I press "Install now" and finish editing my HDD settings so Windows is going to install it finish the "Copying Windows files" step and it just stucks at 0% at "Expanding Windows files"

I have tried with Windows XP aswell and it does not work. I have taken out the HDD and deleted everything on it from my other computer but it seems to still not work so I guess it is the BIOS settings.

I have full access to the BIOS but I have no idea what to do...

Any ideas?

A:Kid needs a computer for school... should I go with a laptop or desktop?

Given a choice, I vote desktop

1) You usually need pay more for laptops
2) Laptops will also need to endure more wear and tear as they're mobile and will be probably be dropped or slip out of hand some time and ya need worry more about damages
3) And importantly, i think it's easier to keep an eye on what kid's are doing on a computer when it's a desktop!

I am looking at this as a laptop for a grade school student who wants to do homework, surfing, and play flash online games. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo-n22-11-6-laptop-intel-celeron-4gb-memory-32gb-solid-state-drive-b... Being very pleasantly surprised by how much I like the laptop in my sig, I'm shopping just for Lenovo. This one I linked to seems rather cheap (in terms of price) to me. I realize a celeron is not the fastest chip around, but it has an SSD. Is this an incredibly good deal for what I'm getting? Or is that just the going rate---not like I have to snap it up now? Should I be leery of these smaller (its actually a tad lighter than the Macbook air) laptops, or the N22 series in general? EDIT: OK just realized its not an SSD---its flash memory. Never bought a laptop with that. Is this a red flag?

A:Lenovo N22 as a grade school student's laptop

One more thing---how easy would this be, to take out/replace the battery? And can I unscrew the bottom and upgrade the RAM easily? Or is it designed to be never torn down, except by a professional? I sent back a laptop that I bought from HP (right before I bought this Lenovo) b/c I was not able to replace the battery.

So basically got my school laptop yesterady, the internet worked fine at school but when I came home it wouldn't work. When I came to school again today it worked, when I came home again it wouldn't.

The internet connection showed that it was connected () but I don't got internet acess. Some restarts I have internet (pretty slow) just on the beginning, sometimes pages just loads forever or very long without connecting and sometimes it just loads a little bit and says network error.

I've been working with trying to fix it all day yesterday and like one hour today, and now I just want to get it done so I came here to make a thread. My network is fine with the computers/telephones in my house so it's not the router.

I've tried to use the windows network error checking tool, it just says that the strandard gateway isn't available (which is not getting automatically resolved) and it identifies a problem aswell that the connection between the router and internet has disconnected.

I have tried to...

* Restarted
* Changing battery network card settings to high priority
* Disconnecting, reconnecting
* Re-typing wifi password
* Deactivating ipv6
* Using a DNS
* Few CMD commands
* Changing an option called "dulex/rulex someting" or something that tells how much mb/s you should receive (or something like that) from router to automatically detect to 100mb/s, didn't make any difference either
..and more

A:New laptop, can't connect to wifi at home but can at school

This is quite simple - The School is using a proxy within Internet Explorer. You must have admin rights for this to work.

On Internet Explorer, - Tools - Internet Options - Connections - LAN Settings - Untick the bottom box (Proxy)

Close and re-open IE, everything should be working.

Make sure you make a note as you will need to re-tick the box when you're next at school.

I am looking to get a laptop for school (Microsoft office, emails, etc...) but also to have some gaming capabilities, most importantly to run Dota 2 1080p @60 FPS (the only game I really care about on this laptop).

The budget is about 700?-900?, but it is quite variable, as I can go higher if it is really worth it.

Thanks in advance,

I'm trying to help my sister fix a problem with her PC, and am stuck in a problem.

The PC was her earlier school-laptop, but after finishing school, she bought it legally from the school. It still has the school setup, and it's not possible to boot from the XP-CD. Even though the install-cd is inserted in the drive, the PC boots to the ordinary partition. Entering "Boot Device Options" only lets me choose between "Notebook Hard Drive" and "Notebook Ethernet". Clicking "BIOS Setup", this message appears:

"User ID: BIOS Administrator
Enter password:"

Neither I nor my sister knows the admin password. The tech-desk at her school is closed, so we can't get help from there. This is really frustrating, it's her computer and she have legally bought it from the school, so this shouldn't been a problem! I've also tried to enter the admin account without password, but of course it's password protected... Is there any way for me to format and reinstall the OS without the need for the admin password (legally, without hacking)?

Good evening Tech Support Guy forums. Here is one for you. I am using a laptopt that is used at a school. The owner (member of staff) can connect to the schools wireless internet but not the one here at home. The computer is running XP Pro and I'm a Linux guy so I'm stumped.

Bascially the wireless card picks up the router, connects and tells me the signal strength is great and all is well. That is not the case. When trying to get anywhere on the net I get the old could not find server page. I have taken an ethernet cable out of the back of one of the other machines and plugged it into the laptop. I need to tell it to not use proxy at all and to automatically detect settings. That is fine but the owner needs the wireless. Like I said the card works fine at the school. Here it won't. I told it to not look for hte proxy and get the settings automatically. We have other machines that connect to the router wirelessly and the router itself assigns the laptop an IP.

Can anyone help me fix this and get it all sorted?

The card is D-Link Airplus DWL-G650+ and the router is a Belkin F5D7230-4 Wireless G router.

Any help much appreciated.
