Netbook won't connect at work, it did at home today

Q: Netbook won't connect at work, it did at home today

This is a really stupid problem. My Acer Netbook with XP worked fine on my wireless network at home this morning. I unplugged it, folded it shut and put it in my bag to bring to work with me (I did not shut it down, never do, has always connected right away). At work, it says it's connected but has little or no connectivity because it can't get an IP address. I've done the refresh/renew, stack resets, nothing works. I got it to connect normally once, (no idea what I did) but couldn't get to the internet, so rebooted and then it won't connect at all again. I will know whether this is a hardware failure or not when I get home and try to connect, but does this sound like a router problem, or something internal? Thanks for any help.

Preferred Solution: Netbook won't connect at work, it did at home today

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Netbook won't connect at work, it did at home today

could a firewall issue

is it a work computer - there a limit to what we can advise here, as any changes may be against your company policies

lets see an ipconfig /all
------------------------------------------------------------------------
ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

If you do not have another PC - do you have a phone connected to the internet - can you photograph the result and post the image in a reply
Note: you will see entries named Tunnel adapter Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface: we dont need to see that information - JUST the infomation above those entries

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

For Windows 8
to open a Cmd Prompt or an Administrator Cmd prompt from the Desktop. Use Win + X and choose Command Prompt or Command Prompt (Admin) from the list.

This should work for all windows version, XP, Vista, W7
Hold the Windows key and press R

then type CMD

then press Enter to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results into notepad and then automatically open the notepad and display on your screen.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results into a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will now be highlighted
Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy

Now go back to the forum - goto the reply and then right click in the reply box and paste the results.
The results from the notepad should now appear in the forum reply.

Due to corona virus my wife started working from our home office last week. She used our personal PC to connect to her work through Citrix with a few hiccups but eventually no problem. Our PC connects to internet via wifi due to distance from router.
This week she was unable to connect. Her IT department couldn't resolve it and said it can't connect because it is not cabled?????
So my wife had to go to work, collect her computer and bring it home. We now have our outdoor garden table in the living room as a makeshift office so she can plug her work computer into the router. Two kids and husband confined at home too!

Apart from buying a 10m network cable is there a fix to get connected via wifi?

Hi All,

Last week I bought a Toshiba NB300-108 netbook which came with Windows 7 starter pre-installed but I have since installed Windows 7 Home Premium Edition only to find problems with the screen resolution and the mouse pad functions.

I managed to find the driver for the screen resolution but I am completely stumped when it comes to fixing the mouse pad. The mouse pad will work but I can't scroll down web pages by sliding my finger down the right hand side of the pad like I could in Windows starter edition.

I have tried the Toshiba website and tried a number of "googles" without success so can anyone please tell me how to get my mouse touchpad back to how it should be?

Many thanks in anticipation of your usual help and expertise.

OS: xp pro sp2 all critical hotfixes
system: IBM t42 - 1.7 GHz processor - 512 MB RAM
level of ability: intermediate
There is no graceful way to explain this, so excuse me if the sentences sound a little stunted. I have a home network that has the name of pimp. I have several laptops, but we'll focus on two of them - one that i use at work and at home, and one that is just used at home.

The work laptop was working just fine last week, and then I went out of town and took the ltop with me. I connected to a best western network just fine. When i got home, i am now unable to connect to my home network. It says that I am connected to the pimp network, but when i try to surf or check email i get no love. I did an ipconfig and instead of pulling an ip address that is assigned by my verizon fios router (192.168.x.x) I get a 169.254.x.x address. What's strange is that my other laptops work just fine, so i'm assuming the router is fine. What's stranger still is that I can take my work laptop to work and, without adjusting ANY settings, i can connect to my work network without any problems at all.

Troubleshooting so far:

I have tried a release/renew
I have deleted and recreated all network connections
I have done a flushdns
i have tried assigning a static IP address that corresponds with my home network

that's kind of where I'm at on this. I just think it's weird that I can't connect at home from this ltop, but i can at work. any suggestion... Read more

Try this - at home on the T42, open a web brower, I'm assuming IE. Either wait until the screen times out or just click stop. Click tools, Internet Options, Connections, LAN settings, then look at the Proxy Server box. If it's checked, uncheck it and uncheck any other boxes in that window, then close everything and open a browser again and let me know what happens.

Hello all and thanks in advance..

I've burned up over 10 hrs trying to solve this puzzle and scanning through the forums. I haven't found a similar situation w a solution which is why I'm posting.

ISP: Verizon DSL, Westell 6100 modem, Netgear RangeMax router.
Setup works perfectly, bridged modem, Router assigns IP addresses, no worries.

1st machine:
IMac 2GHz Intel Core 2, OS 10.5.8, updated.
Connects perfectly via ethernet and wirelessly, WPA Personal authenticat. Also works using WPA-2.

WEP NOT good: asks for passphrase/key, I enter it as it is set up in the router control panel, it attempts to authenticate, then error reads "Connection Timeout."

2nd machine:
Old IMac PPC G4 1 GHz, OS 10.4.11.
Connects via ethernet through both modem directly and via the router.

WEP NOT good, error reads something like "failed to connect, Try Again?" I don't plan on using WEP, so I haven't looked at that setup in a while. I've been trying to set up the network as WPA. I understand there's some sort of incompatibility issue with the older Macs and WEP.

But... WPA NOT good: similar error to above, not a timeout. My router's broadcast is detected, but this machine cannot connect to it regardless of the authentication. Does NOT work via any WPA (1 or 2) nor WEP. Basically, it doesn't connect wirelessly. It will only connect if there is NO router authentication.

Hi
This is an XP pro machine and after it failed to connect I have also re-installed XP.
It cannot ping the linksys router and connect to the LAN/ internet.
I have tried comparing TCP/IP settings, checked off windows firewall , compared with other computers on the LAN, checked the cables, assigned working IP's to it to see if that helps etc.

If I bring it home and change the TCP/IP settings to match my home router, it works flawlessly.
I have also completely formatted and reinstalled XP.
What else can I try?
Appreciate any input. Thanks!

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

I recently received a computer from where I work as a gift; they were going to throw it out because they got new ones. This computer was part of the network, and upon startup required you to provide a username and password as well as select the domain. I know the username and password, so I can log on. However, I cannot receive an internet connection when I connect it to the internet at my home. The icon at the bottom right of the task bar states that I am connected to the local area connection, but my internet browsers claim that they cannot connect to the internet. Does this have something to do with the network domains on the computer?

Is there a way to resolve this? It runs Windows XP Professional. Thank you for your time.

Notes:
I have a working internet connection on all other non-work computers that I connect.
All wires and plugs are intact and as they should be.

Hey guys,

I've got a Dell work laptop. It has McAfee Safeboot and other work related security things. I don't have many "privileges" on the machine. It connects to my work wifi network just fine (automatically) but I can't get it to connect to any wifi networks outside of work. If go to network settings and look at the wireless adapter and view available wifi networks, nothing comes up. It looks like the laptop has an alternative program that controls network adapter (Dell network adapter program) but it won't open when I double click it.

Any thoughts on where to start? What more info would you like?

A:Connect work laptop to home wifi

Have a talk with your work IT department and see if they can check it out for you. Then I would make sure that all the drivers are updated, not through MS but through each vendors website, especially the network adapter.

Is there a way to connect to my school network from home? I'm a grad student and need to have access to journal articles while at home. When I go to sciencedirect.com to look-up an article at home, it asks for a user-name and password. It doesn't ask that when I'm at school. So this means they verify the IP address to see if I have subscription to the website.

I'm not sure if it would help, but I have a Win7 PC connected to the school network in my lab. I don't want to use LMI because it is painfully slow.

Thanks.

A:Connect to work/schook network from home

I assume that you have login credentials for accessing the server from your machine at school.

You should try entering this into the ID request box. If you are on a domain system your User ID may need to be in the format domain/user.

If this does not work you may need to ask your IT department in school to adjust your login credentials to allow remote access. These are also the people to talk to if you do not know your ID and password (autologin)

It is probably the setting for the network adapter on the new computer having a static DNS entry from your workplace. Look at the TCP/IP settings for your network adapter in Control Panel.

Hello,

Sorry if this has already been covered, I have tried searching but don't really no what I'm looking for!

I have a netgear dg series router at home but am having trouble accessing the Internet with my work computer. I have connected dozens of personal computers and wifi devices to my network without trouble but with my work laptop I am stumped.

I originally tried setting up the connection myself. I was able to connect to my network but had no Internet access. The techies at my school then manually input all the necessary settings from an ipconfig/all that I ran on my personal computer. This made no difference to the issue, the computer connected to the network but still no Internet.

The final thing I checked was whether I could access my router setup application through internet explorer. I did this by going to http://192.168.0.1 and using the default username and password. That worked fine and I could access all the wireles settings and even change the Encription code. Even after that, I couldn't access the internet!

I'm hoping it's a simple fix, any help would be awesome.

Thanks

Sebastian

Hi,

I have searched this forum and google but cannot see a solution to my problem.

I am trying to set my home Outlook 2007 to my works MS exchage server.

I can connect to it through IE with an https connection which is ok but a bit limited.

When I set Outlook to autodiscover settings for my work mail everything runs smoothly to start. It finds the settings confirms if i wish to accept the security certificate but the prob starts when it asks for my username and password as it keeps automatically putting my PC's hostname before my username. I have tried removing the hostname but this doesnt seem an option as the PC has to be called something. I though I would be sneaky by giving the PC the works username but still no joy.

Any suggestions?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When I try to plug my laptop into the router via ethernet cord (in order to login to router and setup secure network) my computer will not recognize the router and won't connect to internet. I tried troubleshooting with my cable provider and they say it's in my computer (IP address will not reset) and he recommended I replace my network card. Windows 7 has a built-in backup (Windows Backup) and synchronization function (Sync Center) but they’re not as easy to use and are limited in feature's, you can download SyncToy which I haven't really used but many people claim works well , and theres a few more free tools out there

It doesn't matter that your systems run different Firewall's and AV's

So I'm trying to fix my friend's netbook. It won't connect to a wifi network. It used to be able to connect to one. It'll either not connect, disconnect immediately, or say it had trouble connecting and disconnects. I booted from an Ubuntu live disc and scanned the windows partition with ClamAV. I got about 12 files, uploaded each one to virustotal to see if I can eliminate any false positives and got left with these:/Roaming/Mozilla/Extensions/{ec8030f7-c20a-464f-9b0e-13a3a9e97384}/[email protected]/components/FreeWorkzFirefox.dll (Adware.Gamevance-445)
Default/AppData/Roaming/Mozilla/Extensions/... (Adware.Gamevance-445)
/Program Files/FreeWorkz/FreeWorkzIE.dll (Trojan.Tdss-7991)
/Uninstaller.exe (Adware.Gamevance-336)Also I scanned it with a Kaspersky Rescue CD 10 and malwarebytes CD and cleaned some other stuff out, I can pull out the log if necessary. I couldn't troubleshoot it myself and another odd thing I noticed was that double clicking wouldn't open a folder. I tried changing the double click speed and nothing. Only thing I can think of is that something it caught created some changes I'm not aware of.Any help would be greatly appreciated! Also I was able to connect to my wifi network in Ubuntu.

Please post the full log from the scans you have done, and also with Kaspersky Rescue CD. This will make it easier to assist you.

If the netbook is running Windows please show the following. If you have a computer running Windows that can successfully get internet access please show the following for it also.

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

I have a wireless D-Link wireless router and I want to connect it to a netbook so that the netbook can go online too, but I just dont know how to do it. The netbook is asking me for a baud rate setting, or just saying unconnected. My computer is windows 7 and the netbook is Win CE 6, so I cant create a home group network. Can anyone help pls? Attach my ipconfig

A:Dont know how to connect my netbook to computer

Quartzy, welcome to the windows 7 forum.

If your netbook is asking you for the baud rate, then it is trying to setup a modem which baud rate is part of the setup. Does the netbook have an ethernet port or a wireless card?

there is the possibility that the wireless port on your netbook is powered off and that would be a good reason for not connecting. I suggest that you take a look at the properties for your wireless port and see if the Power is turned off.

The ipconfig is from your working computer, not the netbook or at least that's what it looks like to me.

Go into the win ce control panel and check out the wireless adapter.

Check the wireless is switched ON
theres often a physical switch or a combination of the FN and one of the F keys to toggle the wireless on/off
often F2 is used - but note , not always - look for a symbol that looks a little like (( i ))

is the wireless on?

Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and install the program.
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.

If you do not have another PC - do you have a phone connected to the internet - can you photograph the result and post the image in a reply

My parents have a Samsung N150 netbook which worked fine with their old modem however they recently got a new one- a D-Link DSL-2730B and it won't connect wirelessly to it, only with the ethernet cable. Every other computer and laptop in the house works with the new modem so I don't understand what's wrong. Is it the drivers? I tried to find an update but couldn't.. Would really appreciate some help as my parents are going to nag me until I fix it. Thanks in advance.

A:Netbook won't connect to wireless Internet

So you got N150 using it with N150 netbook.

Make sure you have this router adsl modem in the mix mode: 802.11b/g/n Try that. Does this router see this Netbook in it's DHCP Tablet? What OS is on that netbook?

I am trying to help my son use his Netbook but cannot get it to work at my house. How does it work? Do I have to put in my password for it to connect? I have fibre optic broadband. I did try to help him from his house but he has Windows 7 and I have XP so not au fait and could not find things quickly enough and I have eyesight problems, so need to get familiar with the Notebook at my house and then can show him! Trying to show him how to send emails with attachments to look for employment, I am fully conversant with my computer used for 12 years now. I cannot tell you what the Netbook is saying as I haven't got it here at the moment, but I am going to pick up his Netbook tomorrow and would like an idea of what I am looking to do to in order to connect with mine. Sorry this is rather long winded, but will really appreciate help. Mavis

My new compaq mini 100c 1110SA won't connect to the internet via the wireless network
I can get on using the ethernet cable. It's using Windows XP
Status says that packets are being sent but not received
Windows diagnostic says: Wireless network key does not match the key settings on the router
Router is a Belkin 54G
Tried it on my firends BT hub but get same result.
Took it back to Carphone Warehouse and they manged to get onto their wireless network. Talking to the assistant today he did say that they had another customer who was having problems getting onto her virgin network.
Sounds to me that I may have to alter a security setting on the router to enable packets to be received but my knowledge of routers is limited

A:Netbook won't connect to internet wirelessly

Forget about fixing the router. If other machine connect to your router, just remove ALL the stored wireless network profiles from this machine and then search for the network. Enter the CORRECT encryption key and you should connect.
