File Extension Question

Q: File Extension Question

I received a file in an email with the extension of .sec. I can't open it. It's should be a text document, possibly with a graphic. Would anyone know how to open this type?

I am tying on a computer that has Windows XP.

Preferred Solution: File Extension Question

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just purchased a program called Multimedia Greeting Card Maker v4.2 this week. When I create a card, then test it within the program, it works fine. When I save it, it saves as a .CRD file.

A:File Extension Question (.CRD)

Disregard this question.

It turns out I am required to send a .BAT file and an .EXE file with the card to get it to work. Wish I would have known that before the shelled out the dough. The cards does open, but it's a real hassle for the recipient.

there all the file defaults, use the ones you need, also you should download hijackthis so a mod can tell you whether your computer is still infected

Download 'Hijack This!

*Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
*Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
*By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
*Click on Install.
*It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
*Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
*Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log *should open in notepad.
*Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents *of the log.
*go to this thread and post the contents
*DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I have been using this same Excel file for many years. I viewed on my new home laptop 2 days ago, using a 2010 Excel Version. It was created on 2007.

I opened it on my work computer, version 2003, and now get the above error message on both machines. The file can no longer be opened.

I have tried emailing it, still won't open.

I have chenged the file type to both .xls and .xlxs neither open.

I downloaded the program on the home page of this site, and it said no file issues, no known problems for this file.

When I click Open File, it still shows where I had the file opened (the file name in lighter gray font - but cannot open.) The original file is in black, and I can open. But, get that message.

I also tried to open and fix - and I tried both options, with formulas, and without formulas, and all it opened was foreign characters.

Any other suggestions? Or is this file gone? Unfortunately, my most recent back up is 3-4 months old...

I also thought about using a macro to save some steps as well. Thanks for your help!

Hi there
on the download is there a SAVE AS option -- that might work if you change the default to .xls

Otherwise I think there are some xlsx viewers where you could view the file or change it to xls. (Note changing to xls will possibly remove some formatting etc).

So I recently had a case of hard drive failure in which basically nothing of value was recovered in the original directory structure, however the drive was full of .chk files from a chkdsk run. I ran a quick script to change all of the extensions to .jpg, and most of the files were in fact intact.

Many of the files, however, are either corrupt, or are simply not JPEG files, and so will not open with the .jpg extension. Is there any batch renaming application that can analyze files by their header data, and append the appropriate extension automatically for the most commonly used filetypes?

A:Batch file extension processing by file header?

Usually file recovery software does that (before the files are recovered as chk files). I don't know of any app that will do what you said though. But if you don't have too many files, use a hex editor to open them and rename accordingly. I use winhex (just for viewing though), but any other will do. Here's a few strings that may help:
JFIF .jpg
PNG .png
MZ .dll or .exe (at least 32-bit - dunno how they are for 64-bit or 16-bit executables)
moov somewhere in the file .mov (may not be at the beginning)
GIF89a .gif
ftyp .mp4
**\rtf1 .rtf
000001BA21000100 (in hex) .mpg (MPEG-1 at least - don't have MPEG-2 samples to test ATM)
3026B2758E66CF11 (in hex) .wmv or .asf

Hello, I use Notepad++ to edit Python files which have the file extension .py such as "sample.py"

I would like to set Notepad++ as the default program to open .py files.

When I open a .py file I get the popup asking me which file I want to use to open. But I do not get the choice to set the default program to open this extension.

When I go to Settings|Choose Default Apps By File Type the .py extension is not listed.

Looking through the registry I see that there is no .py handler.

Q: What is the method to manually add a file extension and associate it with a program?

A:File extension not in file association list

hey I figured it out!

1) Settings - Indexing Options
2) Advanced button
3) File Types tab
4) Add New Extension to List box, type in extension (without a period) such as "py"
5) Click OK and Close
6) Settings - Chose a default app for each type of file
7) Scroll down to file extesion
8) click Choose a Default
9) select a program
10) The first time you open a file with this new association, you will get a popup asking you which program to use to open this file type. Your default program will already be selected and a checkbox with Always use the program to open this type of file will already be selected as well, just click the program type. After this you are golden.
11) Damn I spent 3 hours on this! Ugh!

I have Firefox 47. Have not updated to version 48 yet, but I do have updates set to automatic for the browser and extensions.

I get a message that said, "Another program would like to make changes to Firefox settings." The programs were Ad Block Plus and My WOT which I had for years and years. This is the first time I have ever gotten this message. Why most likely did I get this message. It happened when I opened up Firefox.

PS. Update history shows that I was auto-updated to version 47.1 yesterday. I also have Windows 10 on a desktop and was updated to version 48 a few days ago. Was version 48 made mainly for the release of Windows 10's anniversary update?

A:Firefox Extension Question? Windows 8.1

I don't think Ver 48 is only for Win 10. I'm on Win 10 and still sitting at 47.0.1. Mozila doesn't push updates out to everybody at one time.

To answer you question about that message, I think mozila made changes in security for FireFox in 47. That is when I first started seeing that message.

ok then I am stumped for a solution for I think is probably simple!

I have a broadband connection in my house, which provides Wifi for the home via a Netgear Wireless router and a wired connection to a couple of home laptops. All fine and dandy.

My new home studio is ready for occupation and in a separate building 75m away, so is well out of wifi range from the house.
The studio does however have a BT extension socket which is connected to the same home phone line via a cat 5 cable.
I realise that I can plug a single computer into this socket using a filter and that would provide broadband for 1 computer.

Thing is, I need to have decent broadband for 2-3 Macs in the studio (I am a video editor).

My question is:
What are my options for getting preferably Wifi in the new building, or at least 2-3 wired connections from this single BT socket?

I have a new spare DLink wireless router, is it possible to have 2 WiFi routers connected to the same Bt line? so the Netgear one serves the house and the Dlink one configured the same to serve the studio?

I purchased a Netgear Ethernet switch, after being told by PC world that this is what I need. Trouble is it doesn't to me look connectable to the BT socket /filter as it lacks an ADSL socket.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I recently recieved a 15 minute video clip which was split into 2 parts. The trouble is, my PC reads them as .txt files. The names are AAE.mov-1 and AAe.mov-2, but they are text files (even though no program I currently have can open them). I was told that I just need to join them and they will revert to the video format so I can watch them. I am stumped as to how to do this.
Any help is appreciated.

A:.MOV file with .txt extension

Looks to me like whoever sent you them has done something wrong if they have a .txt filename extension. The .txt extension does not belong to multipart files. Most multipart files have the .rar or .zip extension for the first file, followed by alpha-numerical filename extensions for the part-files. They can be joined back together using WinRAR or WinZip respectively.

A friend of mine uses Win 98 and had it reinstalled by a technician. the technician said he saved my friends old emails and placed them in a folder named WIN_OLD.

The problem is that the file extentions are .dbx and we've never heard of this. Now he can't access his old email and is frantically searching for an answer to assist him in at least viewing the emails. Each file has the Microsoft Outlook Icon attached to it.

Trust me when I say his Outlook program does not function.

We thought that by right-clicking one of the files, and then choosing "Open With..." that we would be able at least use another program to view the emails. That just isn't going to happen because nothing seems to want to open a file with the extension ".dbx"....

Has anyone heard of this extension and if so then how can we view the file?

General rule is you can't run a php file locally.

php runs from web servers, not local clients. With that said, you could set up a local webserver and run it that way or pick up a copy of somthing like php viewer

Why did it work in your browers before...what browser and version were you using? I'm guessing it was an old version before developers begain locking down the running of scripts locally.

Hi everyone,

I don't know where else to post this question since there isn't a miscellaneous thread so I hope you won't mind if I ask on this thread.

I have a problem opening a file with D01 extension. This file was copied from an old 1980's computer with a security camera footage. This is suppose to be a video or data file but when I searched the web its always about a D01 audio file. I tried installing Winamp with a D01 extension plug-in to run it but it doesn't work. I don't know what other program can open this since the computer I got it from is so old.

Its really important that I can view this file because this is a footage of someone hitting my car, but the guy went to court and said I was the one who ran into his car.

If anyone can help that would be great! Thanks!

Also I have this file saved in my laptop which operates with Windows Vista.

A:D01 file extension

Hi. . .

Ironic to see this as I recently worked on a criminal case involving surveillance footage than was "un-openable". The New York State Police sent a DVD with 2 files on it - one had no file extension; the other an exe file named player.exe that failed when executed. That was it. Very nice of them. . . but they are the prosecution, although I think they have heard of reciprocal discovery. File opened. Defendant acquitted.

Your file - some questions, please -

1. Does the 1980's PC have a DOS OS?
2. What is the approximate date the footage was taken?
3. What device was it recorded on (digital camera, VHS, etc...)?
4. Have you ever seen the footage - if so how?
5. Did the 1980's PC actually record it?
6. How large is the file?
7. How was it copied from the 1980's PC - 1.44mb HD floppy?
8. Is the file compressed (1980's had FastBack)?
9. Have you ever found a program that will partially read it?
10. How did you copy it onto your Vista system?
11. Does anti-virus flag it?
12. Is it a single screen shot or is it like store surveillance footage - multiple screens (4, 8) on one screen?

I will give it a shot - but I need the file. Send me a PM and I'll provide email address.

Regards. . .
