File Extension Question

Q: File Extension Question

I received a file in an email with the extension of .sec. I can't open it. It's should be a text document, possibly with a graphic. Would anyone know how to open this type?

I am tying on a computer that has Windows XP.

Thanks

Preferred Solution: File Extension Question

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just purchased a program called Multimedia Greeting Card Maker v4.2 this week. When I create a card, then test it within the program, it works fine. When I save it, it saves as a .CRD file.

What is needed to open this file? I've tried everything I have, and I am unable to find the answer, via Google

TIA.

** Program's description**

This GREAT software package allows you to create musical animated greeting cards for all occasions. A:File Extension Question (.CRD)

Disregard this question.

It turns out I am required to send a .BAT file and an .EXE file with the card to get it to work. Wish I would have known that before the shelled out the dough. The cards does open, but it's a real hassle for the recipient.

.dat files are, as the name suggests, data files. The data is in ASCII format. You should be able to open these in a normal word processor or in MS Notepad.

I just discovered 20 of these files in the C: root directory in one of my computers and have never seen them there before.

This is what the file name looks like:

sqmnoopt00.sqm

through

sqmnoopt19.sqm

I did a Google search on it and it appears to have something to do with MSN Messenger 8.0. If that's the case, I did install the 8.0 beta version about a week ago - which originally worked, but no longer does. I haven't uninstalled it yet.

Download 'Hijack This!

*Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
*Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.

*Click on Install.
*It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
*Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
*Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log *should open in notepad.
*Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents *of the log.

I have been using this same Excel file for many years. I viewed on my new home laptop 2 days ago, using a 2010 Excel Version. It was created on 2007.

I opened it on my work computer, version 2003, and now get the above error message on both machines. The file can no longer be opened.

I have tried emailing it, still won't open.

I have chenged the file type to both .xls and .xlxs neither open.

I downloaded the program on the home page of this site, and it said no file issues, no known problems for this file.

When I click Open File, it still shows where I had the file opened (the file name in lighter gray font - but cannot open.) The original file is in black, and I can open. But, get that message.

I also tried to open and fix - and I tried both options, with formulas, and without formulas, and all it opened was foreign characters.

Any other suggestions? Or is this file gone? Unfortunately, my most recent back up is 3-4 months old...

I'm trying to open in Excel 2010 a file with .exf extension that is always a pipe delimited text file. I have set, using Windows file associations, to open this type of file with Excel. But, I would like for it to recognize that it is pipe delimited, so that I don't have to click on Delimited, Other, "|" to import the file. Any ideas? I also thought about using a macro to save some steps as well. Thanks for your help!

Hi, welcome tothe forum
Macro is the solution, just start the macro recorder, give it a name and do what you do, stop the recorder and you have the macro.

So I recently had a case of hard drive failure in which basically nothing of value was recovered in the original directory structure, however the drive was full of .chk files from a chkdsk run. I ran a quick script to change all of the extensions to .jpg, and most of the files were in fact intact.

Many of the files, however, are either corrupt, or are simply not JPEG files, and so will not open with the .jpg extension. Is there any batch renaming application that can analyze files by their header data, and append the appropriate extension automatically for the most commonly used filetypes?

A:Batch file extension processing by file header?

Usually file recovery software does that (before the files are recovered as chk files). I don't know of any app that will do what you said though. But if you don't have too many files, use a hex editor to open them and rename accordingly. I use winhex (just for viewing though), but any other will do. Here's a few strings that may help:
JFIF .jpg
RIFF AVI LIST .avi
PNG .png
MZ .dll or .exe (at least 32-bit - dunno how they are for 64-bit or 16-bit executables)
moov somewhere in the file .mov (may not be at the beginning)
GIF89a .gif
ftyp .mp4
**\rtf1 .rtf
000001BA21000100 (in hex) .mpg (MPEG-1 at least - don't have MPEG-2 samples to test ATM)
3026B2758E66CF11 (in hex) .wmv or .asf

Hi there
on the download is there a SAVE AS option -- that might work if you change the default to .xls

Otherwise I think there are some xlsx viewers where you could view the file or change it to xls. (Note changing to xls will possibly remove some formatting etc).

Hello, I use Notepad++ to edit Python files which have the file extension .py such as "sample.py"

I would like to set Notepad++ as the default program to open .py files.

When I open a .py file I get the popup asking me which file I want to use to open. But I do not get the choice to set the default program to open this extension.

When I go to Settings|Choose Default Apps By File Type the .py extension is not listed.

Looking through the registry I see that there is no .py handler.

Q: What is the method to manually add a file extension and associate it with a program?

Thanks!

A:File extension not in file association list

hey I figured it out!

1) Settings - Indexing Options
2) Advanced button
3) File Types tab
4) Add New Extension to List box, type in extension (without a period) such as "py"
5) Click OK and Close
6) Settings - Chose a default app for each type of file
7) Scroll down to file extesion
8) click Choose a Default
9) select a program
10) The first time you open a file with this new association, you will get a popup asking you which program to use to open this file type. Your default program will already be selected and a checkbox with Always use the program to open this type of file will already be selected as well, just click the program type. After this you are golden.
11) Damn I spent 3 hours on this! Ugh!

I have Windows XP SP2 installed.

There are presently 246 files in the C:\WINDOWS\$NTSERVICEPACKUNINSTALL$ folder with a .000 extension that add up to tens of MB's.

These files appear to be duplicates of other files with the same name.

I'm pretty sure that files with a .000 extension can be deleted in XP, just like they can in 98 and ME, but I want to be sure.

ok then I am stumped for a solution for I think is probably simple!

I have a broadband connection in my house, which provides Wifi for the home via a Netgear Wireless router and a wired connection to a couple of home laptops. All fine and dandy.

My new home studio is ready for occupation and in a separate building 75m away, so is well out of wifi range from the house.
The studio does however have a BT extension socket which is connected to the same home phone line via a cat 5 cable.
I realise that I can plug a single computer into this socket using a filter and that would provide broadband for 1 computer.

Thing is, I need to have decent broadband for 2-3 Macs in the studio (I am a video editor).

My question is:
What are my options for getting preferably Wifi in the new building, or at least 2-3 wired connections from this single BT socket?

I have a new spare DLink wireless router, is it possible to have 2 WiFi routers connected to the same Bt line? so the Netgear one serves the house and the Dlink one configured the same to serve the studio?

I purchased a Netgear Ethernet switch, after being told by PC world that this is what I need. Trouble is it doesn't to me look connectable to the BT socket /filter as it lacks an ADSL socket.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Guys,

I have Firefox 47. Have not updated to version 48 yet, but I do have updates set to automatic for the browser and extensions.

I get a message that said, "Another program would like to make changes to Firefox settings." The programs were Ad Block Plus and My WOT which I had for years and years. This is the first time I have ever gotten this message. Why most likely did I get this message. It happened when I opened up Firefox.

Jack

PS. Update history shows that I was auto-updated to version 47.1 yesterday. I also have Windows 10 on a desktop and was updated to version 48 a few days ago. Was version 48 made mainly for the release of Windows 10's anniversary update?

A:Firefox Extension Question? Windows 8.1

I don't think Ver 48 is only for Win 10. I'm on Win 10 and still sitting at 47.0.1. Mozila doesn't push updates out to everybody at one time.

To answer you question about that message, I think mozila made changes in security for FireFox in 47. That is when I first started seeing that message.

I run Mac os 10, Leopard, and sent a compressed mp3 file to an XP friend. I sent the file via Apple Mail. My friend could open and play the file, but before the music was downloaded it wasn't noticed that there wasn't an extension after the . (dot). He can't delete the file, move it but it plays.
He tried renaming file with proper ext. but that didn't work. It pulls up an error message that says "file can't be found."
Does anyone know how to delete? The file isn't causing any harm but it's just the principal of not being able to get rid of it!
Thank you.

Here is the latest error message:
Error deleting file or folder.

A:mp3 file without extension

Not enough information. Browser, method of getting emails
(webmail? email client?). How was the MP3 played? Was
the attachment saved to their hard drive first, then played?
What program was used to play the MP3? What is the
full path to the file? What program is generating these error
messages?

On the assumption they use Internet Explorer and Outlook Express.
If they simply clicked on the attachment and made it play without
saving it first, then cleaning the Temporary Internet Files should
get rid of the file.

There really doesn't seem like an apprporiate place to ask this so this seems the most feasible. I recieved a cd from a company containing old (1999) bank of america records (check images) that they couldnt open and need to. I am not convinced that the file format should be abc. I ran it through Trid and it came up with a Microsoft Security Catalog file. I am unsure what to do from here. I didnt know if it is possible to find what type of file it is supposed to be by reading it with notepad.

I've attached the file and any help would be appreciated!

A:ABC File Extension

If you ever need to know what program opens a file extension, just type it in Google. Do not install any Registry Cleaner programs they offer. But they will tell you what program opens that file extension.
The consensus is that the .abc file extension is a music writing software. There was also one hit about a financial graphic program that is very rare.
Since these are Bank records, why not contact the Bank and have them look through their micro film files for the account and reprint them for you for a small fee.

I recently recieved a 15 minute video clip which was split into 2 parts. The trouble is, my PC reads them as .txt files. The names are AAE.mov-1 and AAe.mov-2, but they are text files (even though no program I currently have can open them). I was told that I just need to join them and they will revert to the video format so I can watch them. I am stumped as to how to do this.
Any help is appreciated.

A:.MOV file with .txt extension

Looks to me like whoever sent you them has done something wrong if they have a .txt filename extension. The .txt extension does not belong to multipart files. Most multipart files have the .rar or .zip extension for the first file, followed by alpha-numerical filename extensions for the part-files. They can be joined back together using WinRAR or WinZip respectively.

When I download programs, (we are not talking about P2P here) everything works fine and all, but if I want to change the name of the file I downloaded, it says that the file is a "file extension" and that it "may not be usable if I change the name." For example, I download a media file and it works fine. It is designated as being a media file and opens with media player. If I change the name, the message "this is a file extension...may not be usable if you change the name" comes up. If I hit "yes" to proceed and indeed change the name, then the file still works, but it is only called a "file" instead of a "media file" and therefore does not open with Media Player as a default. If I try to check the box that says "make this program the default player for this file," the box is "uncheckable." This started happening a few days ago and I am not quite sure what is going on. Any ideas? Thanks.

The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file." What can I do to be able to view and edit the video on my computer?

A friend of mine uses Win 98 and had it reinstalled by a technician. the technician said he saved my friends old emails and placed them in a folder named WIN_OLD.

The problem is that the file extentions are .dbx and we've never heard of this. Now he can't access his old email and is frantically searching for an answer to assist him in at least viewing the emails. Each file has the Microsoft Outlook Icon attached to it.

Trust me when I say his Outlook program does not function.

We thought that by right-clicking one of the files, and then choosing "Open With..." that we would be able at least use another program to view the emails. That just isn't going to happen because nothing seems to want to open a file with the extension ".dbx"....

Has anyone heard of this extension and if so then how can we view the file?

Thanks for any input.

I apologize if this is the wrong forum to post this in.

I recently recieved a new computer.
On my old computer, I was able to code in Notepad, save as a .php file, and be able to view it as an internet site in my internet browser.

However, my new computer does not read this extension at all. I have visited PHP's website and downloaded a package that installs PHP for Windows, but this had no effect on the .php files I have on my computer.

I have some old files I transferred over from my old computer and when I click to view them, they won't open at all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you

General rule is you can't run a php file locally.

php runs from web servers, not local clients. With that said, you could set up a local webserver and run it that way or pick up a copy of somthing like php viewer

Why did it work in your browers before...what browser and version were you using? I'm guessing it was an old version before developers begain locking down the running of scripts locally.
