Q: Question You are subscribed to this thread Applies to Windows Apps on Windows 10 Other Windows apps Tools 4 views Broken report - Threat Modelling Tool 2016 - fault risk ratings

Hi,

I am using the SDLC Threat Modelling tool 2016 by Microsoft on a Windows 10 virtual Box 32-bit.

When I am trying to generate a final report, it discards all the different risk ratings for each threat, and instead of having the respective high, medium, low levels next to each threat, it produces a html report putting only high next to each
one of them.

Any help?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,
We are using  the Threat Modeling tool 2016 but we have a problem with
accentuated prints like «é» or «č» in the template editor.
It raises an error on :
-
Stencil name
-
Properties name
-
Properties values
What?s really annoying is that the modeler doesn?t have any problem with these prints characters ? we used them in TMT2014 without any problem, and we?re able to do the same in TMT2016 by importing a model from 2014 - so bypassing the template editor.
Is it possible to fix this and allow accentued prints characters in a futur version ?

Property name 'New Property Attributeé' of stencil 'New Stencilé' is not valid. Property name must contain only letters, numbers and underscores. Property name cannot contain
periods and special characters other than parenthesis, hyphen, comma and &.

Just upgraded to Windows 8 a couple of hours ago. Everything was working fine until I turned on 'High Contrast' in Settings/Ease of Access. The setting refused to revert when turned off (tried restarting, etc). After I finally managed to turn it off (Control Panel/Display and then choosing a new theme), every Windows 8 app has become unusable.

Text is warped, appears in places it shouldn't and buttons can't be clicked. The apps themselves are slow to load and quickly close themselves after starting. This happens in Xbox Music, Xbox Video, People, Weather and every other Windows 8 app I've tried. Meanwhile everything on the desktop is fine.

With one exception. If I right-click on the desktop (or in Windows Explorer) the screen turns black, takes a few seconds to return and then every program on the desktop has been closed. I'm guessing this isn't what right clicking is supposed to do.

A:All Windows 8 apps broken, old Windows 7 programs fine

Attempting to create a new folder in Skydrive through Windows Explorer also results in it crashing. I can create a new folder in my local libraries however.

This is a thread spin off of
http://forums.techguy.org/general-security/1011304-linux-security-myths-talking-people.html
OS X for the most part do not like to install programs in system level.

You cannot move appp around in windows as windows makes DLL files and registry entry and moving it will break it.Also Microsoft wants people to use shortcuts and moving apps will break the shortcuts of path of the files.

In OS X all files needed to to run the app are glued with the app and in windows you must run the installer to make the directory where it will copy all files to run the app ,make path ,make the shortcuts and DLL files and registry entry .

Moving files around break the DLL files and registry entry .Part of this is to stop illegal copying. In windows people use the installer to remove or install app we never move app around like in OS X .

Also most time apps have to run in system level in windows not like OS XClick to expand...

It is not the scopes of Linux ,windows ,OS X security myths but the thread got little of topic of talking about moving appp around in windows and other OS.

Please discusses here with out making the other thread more of topic.

A:Cannot move apps around in windows ( thread spin off)

Note there is a debate going on there. One member saying it can be done in Linux and windows and saying it is easy if you know what you doing. The other member saying it is very hard and you have to know lots about the OS to do that.

It all started when I tried to use the calculator. I pressed the calculator key on my keyboard but the calculator app didn't open. It just flashed on the screen. I tried again but no luck.
I googled and found this. I re-registered the apps and reboot my computer.
Calculator didn't work nor did any other apps. I also discovered that all apps had strange names. For example store is something like:
@{Microsoft.WindowsStore_2015... etc.

I tried re-registering and rebooting again. Trying to open calculator with keyboard gives an error. My OS is not in English but I try to translate it. "You need a new application to open link type calculator."

I find when there is a pending update to the modern windows apps they won't work correctly. Then navigate to store and generally can see an update waiting. It then updates and seems to work fine. I've had it before where photos or calculator flash on screen and then disappear. I then see the updates are lurking. So basically a looming update seems to break functionality until you actually go and update.

I believe a virus or trojan from a long way back damaged or corrupted the Windows Update and App components. All my metro apps cannot connect to 'servers' or the internet

and Windows Update could not even find updates until I tried to mend it myself and ran multiple fix it Microsoft applications to return the Service to my computer. Fortunately, now it searches but doesn't find anything.

I believe these fundamental components have been corrupted or deleted by a third party program (which I deleted with Norton Internet Security a while back) and my machine can no longer connect to Microsoft servers for updates and app support.

I've tried almost everything apart from a full factory reset and I'm really not planning on doing that as I don't currently have an external backup disk.

Will post any further necessary info required.

So, a few weeks ago, I started playing Rise of the Tomb Raider on Steam and every time I would exit the game my volume icon and my start button became unclickable. I searched the web for a solution and found a PowerShell solution. It worked, but it only fixed the problem until I decided to play again.

A few days ago, I went to open up my camera app and a screen would open up for 1 second and close. It also happened when I tried to open up the Windows Store.

"@{Microsoft.WindowsStore_2016.27.2.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe?ms-resource://Microsoft.WindowsStore/Resources/StoreTitle}"

I've tried everything except system restores. I never set up restore points and that's my fault. I really don't want to spend hours downloading all my games and programs again. I also don't want to spend money on a external hard drive to make backups of everything. If I have to, I will. Hopefully there is a quicker and easier fix. I don't understand why there just isn't a uninstall and reinstall option for the Windows Store.

Well, here is a screen shot I made of my issue. I've read through a few other posts about Store errors, I think mine is different than most of the other ones on here. Thanks for any help you can send my way.

Earlier today, I decided to accept the free offer on my Win 7 Samsung laptop to upgrade to Windows 10. The upgrade checker started by telling me that this laptop was compatible but now seems to be in two minds about the subject and won't let me upgrade. Some assistance would be greatly appreciated, as the July 29 deadline is fast approaching.

One screen on the Get Windows 10 dialogue box reads as follows:

This PC works with Windows 10

You won't be able to use the Guest account in Windows 10.

You'll need to uninstall these apps during the upgrade
Samsung Recovery Solution 5
Easy Settings [another Samsung app]

I decided to uninstall the 2 Samsung apps before starting the Win 10 upgrade, but the Get Windows 10 dialogue box still insists that they are there despite a couple of reboots. Those apps no longer appear in Control Panel's Uninstall or Change a Program list. Neither are there any obviously related Services still running.

When I try to proceed with the Win 10 upgrade I am presented with another page of the Get Windows 10 dialogue box:

Unfortunately, this PC is unable to run Windows 10
We're sorry to let you know that this PC can't upgrade to Windows 10 because one of more things are incompatble. See right for details [that takes me back to the other page quoted above, which tells me that my laptop works with Win 10!]

This is very frustrating. Where do I go from here?

Just got a refurbished Surface Pro 2 and I feel like the Windows installation might be a bit broken. Done all the usual googlings and every step I make takes me further down a feedback loop of 'computer says no'.

Firstly, if I try to check for updates (in control panel), it gets stuck in a 'checking for updates' loop. I saw one fix was to make sure the date was correct, mine was WAY off, oh how I delighted in the promise of that being the obvious fault - it was not.

The other issue is that the app store thing has never worked. At first it was because the initial Windows set up messed up my attempt to log in using my Microsoft ID, then I rectified that and, like the update issue, it too hung upon trying to start it. I did the fix where you copy and paste this 'Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $Env:SystemRoot\WinStore\AppxManifest.XML' into Powershell, but all that did was delete the actual store app.

Store is ok now, no particular reason, just windows update that's broke.

I'm trying to update my current genuine Windows 8.1 home to Windows 10. Unfortunately it fails no matter what method I use. I've tried everything. I think it's due to the fact that my windows apps are broken. Same goes for windows store and pc settings. Upon clicking any of the above I get an icon in the taskbar but clicking on it does not reveal any window. Also live update for the tiles associated with apps does not work.

I've tried already :

1. Automatic repair of windows store and apps with a dedicated microsoft app. Output : "Can't find ms-windows-store:PurgeCaches"

2. Using automatic registry repair tool called Wise Registry cleaner. Rebooted, nothing changed.

3. Ran 'regedit' and tried to access HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AppModel\Repository\Packages
Unfortunately, folders 'Repository' and 'Packages' did not exist. Hi Everyone,

I'm installing Windows 10 on new computer for my organization . I try to configurate one with fresh install (package of apps like Libreoffice, VLC, etc. for users) and custom desktop describes in this tutorial:

Default User Profile - Customize in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

It works fine, in audit mode I install apps, drivers, custom desktop and configure default apps like google chrome for internet browser, adobe reader for pdf files etc.

then I run the command line to enter oobe mode generalize. Everything is ok, I continue my install. Then I create new user local account. And when windows starts, I have my custom desktop but default apps are removed (Microsoft Edge replace Chrome, Pdf files are read with Edge, etc.) and Apps Windows like "Weather" or "Actualities" crash . I really don't understand what happened... i try many times for same issue...

Does anyone have an idea ?

Thanks a lot

I never tried sysprepping 10 but i have faced similar issues with 8.1. Turned out that you need to save the default app associations to an XML file using DISM (before Generalizing the image ) and later import it.

Export or Import Default Application Associations

Configure, export, import App File Associations in Windows 8.1

I have used "Setupcomplete.cmd" to auto import the app associations during the last face of install.

Add a Custom Script to Windows Setup
You may also need to disable the new app notification before generalizing the image.

Windows 10 Folder will not refresh:
Either it is Windows 10 x64, B10240 and B10523, OR Acrobat 11 when using their 'Convert' button an Acrobat add-on in Internet Explorer 11. The associated Window Explorer folder lists existing and old now non-existing PDF files; the file
list keeps expanding. The Convert button coverts a Web page to a PDF file. Typically I use the Desktop to store the PDF after conversion, and then either delete that file or move it to an alternate folder for archiving. On pressing the Convert button
an Explorer Window appears which allow for renaming and selecting a folder to store the PDF. It is this window that is not refresh, and F5 has no effect also. The non-existing PDF files are sized as "0 KB" and the list is getting
larger. At one point I actually had six real PDF's and the Explorer Windows listed and additional 75 files phantom PDF's.

Modern App Stores have been around for many years and are present on macOS, iOS and Android. Now let's add Windows Store to the mix, since Microsoft have struggled with gaining anything to add to their Store, and would like to hear your opinion.

External sites:

What is it? What's a Universal Windows Platform (UWP) app?
How it works? Intro to the Universal Windows Platform
Background: Difference between Windows UWP (Universal Windows Platform) and Win32 apps, as explains below:

"Another big reason why UWP apps are desirable over Win32 programs is that they are much more restricted in terms of what they can do after they are installed on the operating system. This makes UWP apps more secure than most Win32 programs. For instance, UWP apps can usually only read the file system in the installed location of the app, as well as an application data folder and a temporary file folder. This is unlike Win32 apps, which usually have access to the whole file system." | Link
In my opinion, UWP apps will shapes Windows 10 future for the Windows 10 Family (Desktop, IoT, Mobile and Xbox), but I do doubt that many members here will not want UWP apps to become the norm, and would prefer Win32 apps. Comment below.

Due to the limitations of the Poll, please vote 1 option under Stage A and 1 option under Stage B - that is most fitting to your personal views.

I tried both of them (tried to refresh the computer for like 6 times). it didn't work. and when it said on startup that the refresh didn't work, it had a link for suggestions, what to do. but the link didn't take me anywhere.

I already spent like 10 hours just to try solve this. reading at forums. I even tried to install all over again windows 8... but it didn't work (as I expected).

I think this have something to do with Antivirus. but I am not sure. than again, I paid money for that Antivirus. so I need to find a way to solve this and stay with my Antivirus.

help?

thanks in advance.
UPDATE:
I read somewhere that its probably the Kaspersky Antivirus 2013..
they suggestion was to make Sharing Network option off/on.
Tried both. still doesn't work.

A:Windows 8 Metro Apps (Like Windows Store) get stuck on splash screen

Just to let you know, I had the exact same problem and none of the troubleshooting steps I found online helped. The solution I had was to uninstall McAfee VirusScan 8.8. Note that just disabling it did not help, I had to completely uninstall it. When I tried re-installing it failed, which tells me the compatibility check when upgrading from Windows 7 didn't catch it. I installed McAfee EPO and that works just fine. Good luck.

Ok, here's the situation:

I usually just have my Desktop as my only Toolbar. That is, whatever is on the desktop shows up on the Taskbar (without title or text). Of course, this is easy enough to do, but try removing the following from the Desktop Toolbar:
- Internet Explorer
- My Computer
- My Network Places
- My Documents

Most of you will say, "Too easy, just go to Display Properties -> Desktop tab -> Customize Desktop and UNcheck the Desktop icons" OR "Just right-click and delete them from the taskbar".

Looks great.... until I reboot or log-off/in. They magically reappear on the Taskbar (but not on the actual Desktop).

I imagine I may need to edit the registry. Any ideas???

A:Windows XP Taskbar magically restores Windows' default apps (IE, My Docs, etc)

Ok, 23 hits, but no replies.
So, I have a work-around:

I simply created a folder, added all the shortcuts I would normally have on my desktop, MINUS the annoying sticky MS ones, and created a toolbar using that folder.

The only downside is that any new applications I decide to have on my new toolbar, need to be added manually to this folder, and should be added (if not already) onto my desktop.

Crude, but it works =o)

Am trying to do an In-place repair to my Surface Pro 3 already running windows 10 (Build 10586.29) because of bugs causing the Start menu and search to be unusable, as well as some metro apps. Have already tried re registering apps using powershell but no luck.
The steps i have followed to attempt this In-place repair are here,
and am using the USB installation media method.
The problem I'm experiencing and enquiring about is when I get up to choosing what to keep, it tells me this.
I have done a bit of research and found some people have fixed this by undoing past registry edits, but this is a very new computer and have never done any registry edits and started with a clean install. Windows and all my system files and programs are in there reglar spot and I run nothing off of other hard drives. Also I have tried booting from the USB media and get the same thing. So how could this be solved? Thanks in advance.

A:Windows 10 In-place repair - Cant keep files and apps, windows install

Why don't you just select Keep personal files and apps? You can choose one of the two other options, too, as is clearly told in the tutorial you mentioned.
Screenshot from the tutorial you mentioned, its Step 13: Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - Windows 10 Forums

Kari
EDIT:

Forget the above, I've just noticed my reply is wrong; when checking your screenshot again I can see that those two other options are greyed out.

I have no idea why. One possible reason is that the install media used is older than current installed Windows. The in-place upgrade and repair install needs to be done using the same Windows version, build and edition than the installed Windows, or later.

Hi everyone,

I couldn't find a solution to my problem so far and I will be really grateful if someone can help me. After installing all available updates of windows 8.1, my checkbox for "Show windows Store apps on taskbar" simply disappeared from the taskbar properties. Moreover, the on and off option from Settings -> Change PC settings -> PC and devices -> Corners and edges -> App switching also seems to be forever gone. In other words when I open an app I can't close it (Esc isn't working any more or X option) and I can't see it on the taskbar Please HELP. Thank you in advance!

A:windows 8.1 missing show windows store apps on taskbar

Hello Geryga, and welcome to Eight Forms.

The show Store apps on the taskbar option was part of the April 8th updates. Please check to make sure that you have all available Windows Updates installed, then check to see if you have the option afterwards. If you did install them all, then see if restarting the computer may help.

I am using Windows 8 Release Preview on my desktop. At present the Windows marketplace has a very limited quantity of apps. I also saw the Windows phone marketplace and it has a lot of apps. I read in the news that it has more than 100000 apps presently. I think it a possibility that when the final version of Windows 8 releases we could also have the opportunity of using Windows Phone apps from the Windows marketplace. Since they too are metro so there is some possibility. What you think about that? Is that a possibility?

A:Would Windows 8 (final) support Windows Phone apps?

I hope so but I heard that the phone apps and the metro apps are in different coding language so that might not work out. Someone else might know better. I really wish that windows phone apps will work on windows 8 though for metro since that would mean a much easier transition if their marketplace is already growing.

Anytime whenever I open any windows 8 app (Store, Change PC settings, ect.) it will be visible on the task bar but when I click on it it immediately just minimized itself and ive tried everything I can think, I cant even do a windows restore because it says that there is no program with that name. Im somewhat experienced with computers but this has me clueless.

A:Major Windows problem, no windows apps open.

Go to C:\ProgramFiles from here you need to unhide the hidden and system folders
You should see your windowsapps folder then. Make sure that folder has the administrator power it needs to read/write etc.
ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES need the following permissions to execute properly:

Read & execute, List folder contents and Read in the following locations
C:\WindowsC:\Program Files (x86)C:\Program FilesList folder and read data, Create Folders and Append Data
C:\Users\<userName>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WERRead
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\DriversHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWAREHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SAMHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWAREHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEMHKEY_USERS

You should then be able to do a restore.

With the introduction of Windows 10, Microsoft is making some fundamental changes to how its software functions. Beyond bringing back the Start menu, Microsoft will also be making some significant changes to the way the Windows Store works.

Currently, you can only buy 'modern' apps in the Windows Store but that will all soon change thanks to a blog post that was quickly pulled by Microsoft. Because of that post, we know that non-modern apps will soon be sold in the store.

Per the blog post: The Windows Store will also support more than just modern apps. It will add desktop apps, as well as other types of digital content. We will provide many different ways to pay for apps. And we'll provide an organization store within the public Windows Store, where an org can place their own curated list of public apps as well as specific line-of-business apps that their employees need.

FireEye mobile researchers recently discovered potentially “backdoored” versions of an ad library embedded in thousands of iOS apps originally published in the Apple App Store. The affected versions of this library embedded functionality in iOS apps that used the library to display ads, allowing for potential malicious access to sensitive user data and device functionality.
These potential backdoors could have been controlled remotely by loading JavaScript code from a remote server to perform the following actions on an iOS device:
Capture audio and screenshots
Monitor and upload device location
Read/delete/create/modify files in the app’s data container
Read/write/reset the app’s keychain (e.g., app password storage)
Post encrypted data to remote servers
Open URL schemes to identify and launch other apps installed on the device
“Side-load” non-App Store apps by prompting the user to click an “Install” button
The offending ad library contained identifying data suggesting that it is a version of the mobiSage SDK [1]. We found 17 distinct versions of the potentially backdoored ad library: version codes 5.3.3 to 6.4.4. However, in the latest mobiSage SDK publicly released by adSage [2] – version 7.0.5 – the potential backdoors are not present. It is unclear whether the potentially backdoored versions of the ad library were released by adSage or if they were created and/or compromised by a malicious third party.

Attempted to update to 8.1 yesterday and the store just won't open. Every time I click on the Store tile it doesn't get past the green introductory screen before just disappearing (crashing).. If I open a window I do not see how to force an app close. I see ctrl + W to close window, but how do I force an app to close?

A:Cannot close YouTube, other apps, windows in Windows 8

Two ways to do this. to the top of the screen when your on the app you want to close. and click hold and drag down as far you can go. that close's the app.

Or you can move you mouse to the upper left screen and a little screen pop's up.
Just right click on it and you can choose close.

Or you can move a bit downwards when you on the thing in the upper right corner and you can see all the app's running. and you close them by right clicking and choosing close.

I started receiving threat detections of AVG and a scan removed several files labelled as "Trojan Horse Small.BPR". But I still get threat detections and scans don't seem to find anything. I also scanned with sophos but nothing was found. I installed zone alarm to stop any potential trojans. My computer is starting to mess up. It started with google chrome crashing and other applications not running properly. Now when I load up there is a blank screen and I have to goto task manager and run explorer manually to get it going. My housemate has similar problems with threat detections but no problems with the running applications. We share memory sticks and hard drives and I'm worried the infection is on them. Haven't been able to use my laptop for days now and I'm worried I will have to perform a full format which I really don't want to do.Thanks for your time guys,--------------------------------------------------------DDS (Ver_09-09-29.01) - NTFSx86 Run by Hasnain at 16:21:50.78 on 09/10/2009Internet Explorer: 7.0.6001.18000 BrowserJavaVersion: 1.6.0_11Microsoft? Hi!

Everybody knows that 64-bit Windows discontinued support of 16-bit apps in Windows 7.
I was never using 32-bit Windows since I left XP.
Now, I want to create virtual machine with 32-bit Windows 10 and Q is clear and simple:

Allows 32-bit Windows 10 Pro to run 16-bit apps?
If not, which last Windows version supports it?

Thank you for each help.

A:Windows's 8.1 apps

Because they changed the behavior of 8.1 from how 8 was. You have to Right click, and then you get the "All Programs" up. You will also have to reinstall any Metro apps that did not get installed if you did a clean install of 8.1.
