Thinkpad w550s External Displays Dual 4k Issues

Q: Thinkpad w550s External Displays Dual 4k Issues

I have two Samsung UE510 28" 4K Displays that I want to use as eternal monitors on my Lenovo w550s laptop. I have one mini display port that should support them. The display adapter is an Intel HD Graphics 5500 with NVIDIA Quadro K620M. From what I can tell I should be able to use a dual video adapter to out of the port into the monitors. The monitors are currently hooked up via Displayport cables. The problem is that I can only get one monitor to display content and the other one just keeps flashing like it is detecting then not. I have updated all drivers but nothing is working. Any Help would be appreciated. Thanks

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi, I've seen this for many years, on many different ThinkPad models and generations, on multiple variants of Windows (8, 8.1 and 10 for sure, and maybe 7, but its so long ago since we had any 7 machines that i cannot recall if the problem existed then). External monitors on occation blacks out for a few seconds before re-appearing. It might happen multiple times within a minute, or once a week - so it is highly sporadic. I am currently running a P51, but my colleagues in my current department also experience this. They are on P51 and W550s. All my ThinkPads since 2011 have had this: T510, T520, T530, W540, and now, P51. I'm on DisplayPort, and currently using daisy chain to connect 2 external displays (2x Dell U2515H), and my internal monitor disabled but the lid is open.

I have a brand-new ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6th Generation, a new ThinkPad USB-C dock, and 3 external Dell U3014 displays, which have a maximum resolution of 2560x1600. I want to run all three external displays at full resolution, with the built-in display turned off. Right now, with 2 of the displays connected to the dock's 2 DisplayPort ports, and the third display daisy-chained to one of the first two using a DisplayPort cable, I have all 3 displays connected and working, but only at the following maximum resolutions: display1 at 2560x1600, display2 at 1440x576, display3 at 1440x576. The Lenovo Platform Specifications sheet for my ThinkPad says that the Intel UHD Graphics 620 chip in my laptop supports "three independent displays" with maximum resolution of [email protected] (for a USB Type-C connection) or [email protected] (for an HDMI connection). So, I think that my laptop graphics chip has enough power to drive all three displays at their full 2560x1600 resolution.(see https://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad%20X1%20Carbon%20(6th%20Gen)/ThinkPad_X1_C...). I've downloaded and installed the most recent driver for the Dell U3014 displays. So, I'm guessing that my laptop and display drivers are fine, and my dock is the bottleneck. Can anyone tell me how to get all three external displays running at their full 2560... Read more

Does anyone know if the Latitude E7240 can support two external displays without a dock? Can you have one plugged in to the mini displayport and one in to HDMI and output just to these displays?
Or is it limited to just the laptop display and one single external display?
Thanks!

A:Latitude E7240 - Dual External Displays Without Dock?

Hi ag-asanchez,
The Latitude E7240 uses an Intel HD Graphics 4400 GPU and so can support up to 3 independent displays, not on dock. In order to use both the onboard screen and 2 external displays both the HDMI and MiniDisplayPort will need to be connected to external displays.
With the Intel Driver, 9.18.10.3204, installed and two external displays connected, the following option should enable 3 independent displays.

(from the notification panel)

Intel HD Control Panel >> Output to >> Extended DT (options here for clone or extended)

Intel HD 4400 Graphics Driver
http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/driverdetails?driverid=183CP

Please see the following Intel guides for more information regarding a multiple display set up for the 4400 GPU.

I installed Ubuntu on an mSATA card in my T520, which is on the 4338-35U docking station connecting 2 external monitors via digital video cables. This dual-display works nicely for Windows 10. The only troule is, with this configuration, the power-on ThinkPad logo (where I can press the F12 key to select boot device) doesn't show on neither monitor and doesn't respond to my pressing on the F12 key. The Device Manager shows all drivers are installed. When power-on off the docking station, I can use the F12 key select boot device to go for either Windows 10 or Ubuntu (Linux). I need advice on how to get the boot device selection screen to show up when the laptop sits on the docking staion.

Hey everyone, I think this is easily possible, but I wanted to confirm before pulling the trigger on another monitor. I currently am using my W530 with a Dell U2713H external monitor (2560x1440) and would like to add another one. Would the W530 be able to handle Mini DP to DP into the Dell U2713H and then DP out to DP in of a second Dell U2713H. I think this is a common daisychaining method, but wanted to confirm. Please share your setup if it is at all informative. Thanks for the help!

Hi everyone!I recently purchased a T480s with the following specs:- i7 8550u- MX150 Graphics- 16GB of RAM- WQHD Display I am running a Setup with the following Displays: internal Display @ WQHD, external Display 1 @ WQHD, external Display 2 @ FHD.Everything works perfectly fine, if I connect External Display 1 via a Thunderbolt Dock and DisplayPort and External Display 2 via HDMI directly. The problem I encounter is the following:I have some "small Adapters" for Thunderbolt -> HDMI or Display Port. They used to work fine until yesterday, now all adapters, except for one (USB C -> HDMI, USB and USB-C) have stopped working. All I get is a message stating that there is a malfunctioning USB device.Funny part: All adapters work fine on a Dell XPS15, Lenovo MIIX 510 Tab, and so on. Whats the problem? I already tried System Restore to a few days ago, did not help... Thanks,Jakob

Morning, Trying to figure out something here, this is, for all intents and purposes, something new for me, as I've been mostly a "Mom n Pop" Tech vs "Business Tech" so, anyway. I'm working with M900, and M910Q with Intel 530 Integrated for video. I'm trying to trouble the following issues to verify if I missed anything, before punting said minipcs to Lenovo for RMA. Anywho, issues: 1. A M910Q, only the DP port with the metal bracket will work. When the Primary is plugged in, any secondary plugged into the other ports will show up under that port when looking at it in the Intel GFX Display view. I figured this out when I changed the resolution on the 2nd monitor, primary changes. Primary is the live monitor. 2. We have a number of M910s and M900's where when trying to use dual monitors, thru DP -> VGA or DP -> DVI. Monitors would flicker like strobe lights. This can sometimes be bandaided by swapping cables and adapters, but not completely remove the issue. I will point out that we do not have any actual DP Capable monitors on site. Not yet anyway, and those that will be, are going to ThinkCentres with Discrete Cards in them... Ideas? Am I miss anything? I don't see anything in the BIOS to help me, and updating the drivers doesn't seem to provide resolution either. Most are running old drivers, but a few are running the latest for the machine.

I have tried re-installing drivers, changed cables and nothing, I still get the blinks. Is there anything I can do to fix this?  Thank you,Daniel A.

Hello,

I am looking for help, as I have been having some resolution issues with my extended monitors for quite some time.  There are a large number of problems that range from BSODing shortly after re-connecting my docked monitors on a regular basis to having constant annoyances with sizes on screen.  I have tried and searched for hours and attempted every applicable resolution, but I haven't found a correct solution.  While I would love to resolve problems with resolution, the BSODs after re-docking are my primary problem.

BSOD after re-connecting my laptop to either docks (takes about 15-20 minutes and gives multiple error messages)
Very inconsistent font sizes and sizes associated with Windows and file explorer

Things I have tried/notice:

Updated drivers, BIOS, firmware, software, etc.
Ran the various Windows commands to check for errors (sfc /scannow, dism, etc.)
Swapped wires and re-seated connections
Adjusted refresh rate on external monitors to 59 and 60 hz
Adjusted resolution on primary monitor to 1920x1080 to match both external monitors (while this is an undesirable solution, it did help some problems and helped address many of the sizing problems, especially with file explorer)
Used custom scaling instead of standard resol... Read more

I have a ThinkPad S1 yoga bought in Dec 2013. I have being using the mini hdmi to work of 1 external 1080p monitor these last few years and it has worked fine. I now want to add a new second 1440 x 2560 along side my 1080 x 1920 monitor for a dual monitor set up. (Mostly for spreadsheets, emails, web browsing etc.) I do not mind if one of these duplicates my laptop screen. I was going to get the onelink dock to enable me to do this however I am not sure if it will work. I know the resolution with dual monitors running off the dock is limited at 1200p. What I now want to do is use the mini hdmi on my laptop for one monitor and the onelink dock for the other, however I want to be sure it will work before I go and buy the monitor and dock. Alternatively I could buy an USB 3.0 to hdmi adapted to run the 1080 monitor and a usb hub for the extra usb's I will need. (I think the dock will use less processing power and would be a slicker set up so I imagine it would be better?) You?re  help would be appreciated as I have read there can be issues trying to get higher resolution monitors to work.

Dear Lenovo, I bought a Lenovo W550s laptop last August, and last week I spilled water on the keyboard. Now, about 8 buttons on the keyboard (at least), don't work. I am curious, will the warranty help me in any way with any thing?  Also, I am looking for a replacement (internal) keyboard, and am having trouble finding one. I am pretty sure that the keyboard that shipped with my laptop last fall was not backlit, as the keyboard never lit up (unless I didn't know how to turn it on). Anyways, the Parts No.: 0C44952, ID No.: 57P1ZW, FRU No.:04Y2387, Model No. KM BL-105US.  When I looked up the part on Lenovo's website, it returned nothing: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/partslookup.  So, my questions for you are:1.) Does the Lenovo warranty help me cover my malfunctioning keyboard?2.) Is the keyboard that I have, Parts No. 0C44952, a backlit keyboard?  3.) Where can I get a compatible keyboard replacement for this laptop? 4.) Will this keyboard replacement work? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA3DY3CW6149&ignorebbr=1 Kind regards,Spencer

Hey Lenovo Enthusiasts! I am about to purchase the Lenovo Thinkpad 550s, and I am tempted to purchase the baseline memory (4GB) and storage (512GB) HDD.  I want to make sure that I can indeed upgrade the memory to 16GB of RAM and the storage to a 256 (or 512) GB SSD. In my research earlier on, I noticed that somebody had posted a link to the parts list:https://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/w550s_frubom_20150130.pdf I don't know what half of this technical jargon is, but from what I gather, I have found an SSD made by Samsung on Amazon, and an 8GB memory made by Data Memory Systems that seem to abide. SSD:http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-256GB-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-7KE256BW/dp/B00LMXBOP4 Memory:http://www.datamemorysystems.com/parts/lenovo/03X6657/ Questions:1) Could somebody wiser than me please verify that these products will work for the w550s? I was going to purchase them from Crucial, as they say that is is "100% compatible" but I am not sure still.Crucial: http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Lenovo/thinkpad-w550s 2) In regards to the warranty, does anyone know if I were to mess up the data preloaded on the HDD that is put in the laptop, by trying to transfer it to the SSD, would the warranty cover fixing this? Kind regards,Spencer

A:Lenovo Thinkpad W550s Memory upgrade to 16GB and S...

Very disappointing. Yes, I have the same problem (son, since it is your problem!). I note that over 189 people have at least looked at this question you asked before we decided to have you purchase the W550S...and after calling tech support one last time after my son purchased the machine (and was told there should be no issue)-we see BSOD multiple times within an hour.  They happen so quickly that it is hard to even note what the error message is.... I replaced his 512 HD with Samsung SSD 512GB drive. I used a disk duplicator-everything seemed to go great. Then I put in 16GB of RAM-again, everything seemed great. However, the notebook is only now being used frequently as my son is starting school now-and as said above, the BSOD is making me think this has something to do with the SSD or RAM replacement. Yes, obviously, it's fairly easy to replace with the original parts and see if the problem goes away-but he wanted the SSD and more RAM, so even if that fixes the issue-we will likely get rid of the notebook. BUT:  here is what disappoints me:  absolutely no comment on my son's original questions. I'm guessing I won't get input from Lenovo either....will try to call tomorrow, but we are almost beyond the point where we need to return the SSD/RAM and notebook if we want our money back. A little guidance from Lenovo would be appreicated before we need to make a decision.. Thanks,Steve

I just received my brand knew P72 thinkpad laptop and I hooked up my existing external monitor to it so I can work with 2 screens.  I am having tons of issues with it.  Any software that I display on the external monitor runs slower and definitly lags when opening new files.  Other issues I have is that when I drag any software to that screen it looks massive and then takes a moment to adjust.  Sometimes after I drag the software to the other screen, certain portions of the software gets blacked out.  And the most annoying issue of all is that, when I go to move my mouse to the external monitor, I have to hit just the right spot at the edge of the laptop screen for it to pass through to the external monitor. Now I had our IT company look into this and they are telling me the problem is that the screen on my laptop is 4k but the the external monitor is not and that is the problem.  So if I want to have another monitor without these issues, I must buy a 4k monitor.  Is this true?  I read the user manual and it said nothing about it MUST BE 4K. I am posting here because I am hoping someone can help me fix this without buying a new monitor.  Or if I do need a new monitor, I am hoping someone can confirm what I need to buy and if it needs to be 4K or not.  If I have to buy a new one I am hoping to buy a 34" Ultra Wide Monitor from LG.  A LG34wk500 I don't know much about computers so take it easy on me if the is... My P70 is displaying some very odd behavior when I plug in multiple external monitors. When I have the laptop LCD open and running, it seems happy, but as soon as I close the laptop lid it goes haywire and 2 of the 3 external monitors keep flickering and dropping in and out every 5-10 seconds. monitor 1: built-in laptop LCDmonitor 2: external monitor connected to mini-DPmonitor 3: external monitor connected to Thunderbolt 3-to-DP-adaptermonitor 4: external monitor connected to HDMI System is happy if all 4 monitors are up and running. As soon as I close the laptop lid monitor 3 and 4 start flickering every few seconds. At that point Windows 10 is constantly trying to switch and re-scale the desktop for 1, 2, or 3 monitors. I have the latest NVidia and Intel P530 graphics drivers provided by Lenovo (updated yesterday) installed for my M3000M and Xeon 1505M processor. It sure smacks of a graphics driver issue to me. Or a driver hand-shake issue between the discrete and internal GPUs. Anyone else seeing a similar problem. Not sure that very many people are running 3 or 4 monitor setups out there so I might have discovered a corner case. I would like to close my laptop lid at work so it's not turned on all day degrading its life.

It is literally unusable like that and i cant return the laptop to the manufacturer since im using it for my university and have a lot of important programms and data on it, i need it daily. Here is a small list of what i have tried so far:-reinstalled the drivers for the device-optimize the power settings-forbid windows to turn off the device to safe power-tried various drivers I could not come up with more solution attempts to that issue. Right now i am even thinking about just buying a new WiFi card for the Laptop (is it swapable in a t480? or is it integrated?)If you need further information to help investigate the issue please let me know!!! I hope there is another way to resolve that issue!Looking forwards to your help  Phil

I've put a fresh install of Windows 7 on RC build, whenever it finished the install and had put its own version of drivers on my dual screen setup worked perfectly, but when i updated my ATi drivers to the latest Win7's but dual screen capabilities vanished. Both screens work fine on their own its just when i try to get them to work together i get problems,,

The screen resolution manager has both screens listed and my cursor will disappear off the right side of the screen as it would do normally on dual setup, but for some reason the other monitor isnt displaying.

Nevermind, ATi had crossfire enabled in the CCC

A:dual displays, bit odd,

Someone with ATI drivers will better be able to respond to this but it sure sounds like the drivers are the issue.
Make sure you have the right drivers. Make sure they are for 7. Completely remove current ATI driver setup. Install drivers again.

A quick search here will point you to any discussion about these drivers - I'd search in the Graphic Cards section not the Install section.

And Welcome to SevenForums. Once you've fixed your problem let us know your solution! Then shoot over to the Tutorials - some great stuff there!

All I have a client with a Dell Precision T3620 that has an Nvidia K620 graphics card installed. The connections on that card are display port and dvi-dual link. If I select onboard graphics as primary, nothing works I see nothing on either monitor.

Would love some help.

A:Dual displays, one won't show up

More than likely no as most motherboards will disable the onboard video when a video card is detected. It is hit and miss (more miss) getting that sort of thing to work unless you have an AMD based motherboard with onboard video and use an AMD video card, known as SurroundView,

ATI Hybrid Graphics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

and allows for using up to 4 monitors at a time, 2 on the onboard and 2 on the video card. Pretty sure Nvidia has something similar,

Scalable Link Interface - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

but no idea if it works like AMD's solution (which happens to work very well).

That's what I also want to use now, but can't manage to work it. What I'd like is to use nVidia "only for external display always" & use intelHD for "laptop screen always". Is there a way to do that on Win10 enviroment & with drivers (intelHD is v10.18.15.4279, while nVidia is v369.09). thanks,

Currently I have 1 20" 1680x1050 display connected via DVI to a Ati Radeon x1300 Pro. I was thinking about getting another 20" display (same resolution) and connecting it via VGA. Basically my question is, will the video card be able to drive both of the monitors simultaneously at 1680x1050 each?

I upgraded my graphics card to a 4350 for the sole purpose of getting better netflix quality. The setup in my room is that I have a 22" LEDTV on my desk above the tower and about 10' away from the desk is my 32" LCDTV that sits atop a dresser. I have the HDMI going to the 22" and a 15' vga with sound going to my 32". When I tried to get both displays to work at the same time the 22" has a weird flickering line that goes up the screen. But when I unplug the VGA and have the 22" standalone it works just fine or vice versa with the 32" working fine by itself without the other monitor. Is it just a power problem? Like having both monitors at once is too much for the gpu to handle it power wise?
I'm thinking it's not necessarily the graphics card but the cheap mobo and cpu I'm working with since it only has a PCIe 1.0 slot instead of a 2.0 and the cpu is only a pentium D 805 (it's a crappy computer I know, but this is just a ****ty second build and will not be used as my main comp). I have a Gigabyte GA-G31M mobo and C2D on the way. I'm hoping this will fix the problem. Anyone else ever had this problem or know why it is happening?

A:Dual displays on 4350?

The problem is sorta the card.

The 2 tv's have 2 diferent "refresh" rates, and the settings aren't ideal.

You'll need to mess i n the Catalyst control paNEl and set the frequencys to better match.

Looking at this Desktop at Bestbuy. Its a great price and has a lot to offer. I was just wondering if it can run 2 monitors in the hdmi ports. Im not sure how the quality would be running 1 in HDMI and the other in VGA or DSub.If anyone knows if it can be done. I'm going to go buy it asap. I just want to know if the 2 samsung monitors I bought can be run together.

A:dual displays and vid players

It might be an insufficient memory issue on your graphics card, try using the TV as the sole display rather than clone and see if the images come out on the TV then. The other thing if that is not successful it to ensure that the TV out settings have dont have the TV at too high a resolution for the mpegs, in the UK the settings are roughly equivalent to 640x480 check on your locale.

Hi,

For the past year, I've been using Windows Vista Ultimate and a dual display setup. Sometime during the summer, my dual display setup started not working. When waking up the computer from hibernation, one display would no longer be available (and would remain asleep?). I could move my cursor onto the sleeping display's area, but I couldn't see anything.

I replaced my graphics card but this didn't solve the problem.

I reformatted last night and am now using Windows 7 Home Premium. I haven't gotten a chance to play with dual displays since they're at my university dorm room. This morning, I fixed an issue where my USB devices would stay in hibernation despite waking my computer up. I disabled an option called "USB selective suspend setting".

Is there an equivalent for dual displays? What other hibernation options could be screwing with my dual displays? (I'll test when I get back to school.)

My specs are attached to my user.

Check you have the latest drivers. 84hz might also be an issue - have you tried it at native resolutions and default refresh rates?

I have a Thinkpad T430 type 23474W4 and a Thinkpad mini dock series 3 type 4338-15U. I already have a Lenovo LEN LS2223wC monitor hooked up to it through one of the DVI ports. I have a a Lenovo LT1952p Monitor that I would like to use as a second external monitor. Both monitors work individually through either DVI or VGA. However, I can't get them to both work at the same time no matter what configuration I use. I was told they didn't have to be identical monitors to work together. What am I doing wrong?

I'm upgrading from a normal 17" crt to TFT to save space, but going the route of dual monitors. I'm wondering if it's best to go the standard (square) route, or go for the newer widescreen models?

Baring in mind that I will use the screens mainly for day to day work. I do a little gaming every now and then, and not too bothered about movies.

Also, the dual monitor factor is important. Is it best to have two standard screens when having dual monitors, or two widescreens? Or is it purely personal preference?

Opinions?

I have an EliteDesk 800 Mini G2 with the i5-6500T CPU and integrated Intel 530 graphics. It also has dual DisplayPort connectors. Like the title says, I was trying to find out if the unit will support dual 4K monitors 3840 x 2160 @ 60MHz. The specs seem to suggest this would work. I'm trying to confirm without having 2 4K monitors on hand. Anyone know and/or have any experience with a setup like this?

Dell Optiplex 330

This has an on-board display controller and another AGP add-in we added, ourselves. We have been using the add-in for several months and decided to do dual monitors today. When we connect the on-board controller to a monitor, we get a message that the machine has been halted and advises us to "correct" the incorrect connections. It wants us to connect the monitor to the add-in card.

Problem is we have a monitor connected to both.

We cannot even access the BIOS setup.

Any ideas?

I have a new Inspiron 3656 with a Radeon graphics card.  I would like to connect dual displays; one via Radeon HDMI port and one via built-in HDMI card.
Radeon port is working fine, but I can't get the built-in HDMI card to work.  I can't even find reference to it in Device Manager or BIOS.  Is it a faulty card or am I missing a setting somewhere?
Thanks.

When you have a discrete card, the built in one is disabled. You need a videocard with dual ports to have dual monitors.

I am trying to setup a dual display from my desktop computer to my 23" monitor and 40" hdtv. The resolution is 1920 x 1080 on both screens. The image fits the monitor perfectly, but is overscanning on the hdtv. How can this be corrected?

A:[SOLVED] Dual Desktop Displays

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

It is due to the image is being stretched across the 40" TV. For dual monitors it best to have them the same size. Besides TVs aren't really great PC monitor replacements.

I have a brand new HP DC7800 business class Desktop with a Nvidia 8400GS. This particular card has a DMS-59 port and in my set up is using a DMS-59 to dual DVI dongle powering dual Viewsonic VP2030B LCDs. When i first got the computer everything was working perfectly, Screen two was set up to extend my desktop from screen one.

Then one day everything stopped working. The computer recognizes that I have both displays hooked up however I can only get video on one of them. In the Nvidia control panel when i click on "Configured independently from each other" and then click apply, my settings get reverted back to single display automatically and I never get picture on the second screen. Same thing happens when i change the settings in windows. I'm running Vista x64 enterprise edition. I have tried swapping cables, different drivers including beta. Any suggestions on what to do next?

Thanks in advance for any help offered.
