Eligible to receive one copy of Windows 10

Q: Eligible to receive one copy of Windows 10

Hi, I have just received my new HP 250 G5, with an information slip stating: "You are eligible to receive one copy of Windows 10 recovery media and HP driver media. For more information or to register your computer and request your copy, either use the registration app or go to http://register.hp.com" I have registered my laptop, but cannot find any information on obtaining Windows 10.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Eligible to receive one copy of Windows 10

Paris2801 Sorry, but you are misunderstanding the offer. It is NOT for a free copy of Windows 10; instead, it is for a free set of Recovery Media to use on Win10 with your PC. This is used to restore your PC to its original factory condition.

I've had many difficulties upgrading my Dell Inspiron from seven pro to Ten. Now that I finally have Ten up and running, it needs an activation key. Apparently in order to keep it running.

I have the slmgr -dlv report attached. What does it tell WRT my eligibility. If it says no, how do I get a good key? My original product key is for Vista and my upgrade was with a seven Pro OEM disk purchased from Amazon a couple of years ago. There is no product key on the packaging or the disc. I used ShowKeyPlus to get an activation key but the windows install says that it is a general application key (or something like that) and won't work.

Thanks for your help.

Yes, it is eligible for activation. You just have to enter a valid Windows 7/8/8.1/10 Pro product key.

A genuine Microsoft product would have come with a product key sticker. You probably did not get a valid genuine Microsoft product that was eligible for you to use in the first place. Microsoft is improving their product key checking.

I have a question about a desktop workstation I purchased from Dell. The PC in question is a Dell OptiPlex 580 which came with an OEM installation of Windows 7 Pro x64. Please bear with the length of my post, and forgive me if I am not posting this in the correct forum. I?m not sure if there is a correct forum for this question, but here goes:Is it possible to purchase a bad copy of Windows? What exactly do I mean by ?bad copy?? I?m not talking about a pirated copy with a fake license. I mean, is it possible the copy of Windows that came installed on my system is damaged, corrupt, or incomplete? All the data on the OEM disc was transferred from somewhere, from something. When the manufacturer created this disc, is it possible that something went wrong? Why do I want to know? Well, here is my story:About two years ago I purchased a brand new PC from Dell. I noticed within the first week or so, practically right out of the box, the PC crashed and displayed a BSOD. The PC crashed again about a week later. I was a little concerned when I saw the first crash, but the second got my attention for sure. However, every time I tried investigating an error code, the probable cause was always vague. I couldn?t find anything that pointed to that one ?silver bullet? fix.I looked for answers everywhere, often on boards such as this one. The fixes suggested to me were numerous, well thought out, but all too often varied. ?It?s the hardware! It?s the software! It?s the hard drive! ... Read more

A:Is It Possible to Receive a Corrupted Copy of Windows?

If I were troubleshooting something like this, all signs seem to point to either a corrupt windows disk you received from Dell or Micro$oft, or a bad Hard Disk Drive. I'm assuming this is a Hard disk drive and not a Solid State Drive (SSD) correct? This could possibly be a hardware /driver conflict. When you get the bluescreen is there anyway you could perhaps screenshot it and post it here? Just use your cell phone or anything really. Once you post that it will have the information I need to actually see whats going on.

I purchased a Windows seven OEM cd from Amazon to upgrade from vista. I'm now wanting to upgrade to ten and the installation using a usb stick gets to the screen where it asks for a product key. The OEM disk doesn't have one.

Is is there a workaround?

A:Is 7 pro OEM version eligible for upgrade to Windows 10?

Just a clarification needed to address your question, lbeck. Are you booting from install USB intending a clean install or just running the setup.exe in the root of the USB to perform the upgrade per se? If only upgrading, you need to make sure your USB has precise edition of Win10 needed to upgrade from your Win7 edition.

I'm ttrying to get the Windows 10 Upgrade, but after going through some help screen, It's telling me that my product is not eligible for an upgrade.

I'm just wondering why that is. I have Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium SP1 that I purchased with a new HP Pavilion desktop computer. I have a product key. why isn't this eligible for W 10? Any ideas?

thanks,
Carl

A:Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium SP1 Product Not Eligible for Upgrade?

Hello and welcome Carl I don't know exactly why but it does recommend you remove any security suites from the machine before you go ahead.

My own personal experience is that one of my desktops upgraded from an OEM Home version I put on but my Toshiba laptop upgraded but would not go past build 10074 and kept asking me to activate it so it could be purely down to glitches or bugs in the system.

By the by how did you get the 10 as I downloaded the ISO and then loaded it from booting from the DVD? As I said I had an OEM clean install to get rid of all the Toshiba crapware - maybe the HP stuff could be causing the problem/s.

Hello, I'm Richie. Let's skip the introduction stuff and get straight to business! I've been planning an upgrade on my PC (GPU & PSU wise) Will it be able to run? These are the parts as listed: -Zotac Geforce GTX 1060 Mini 3GB (NewEgg Product Page) (Not SC'd) -EVGA 450W B1 Power Supply (Newegg Product Page)  So just wondering if these will be eligible for my current build and that nothing will blow up?  Thank you!-Richie

A:Will these upgrades be eligible for my PC?

@RichieWhy,Interesting introduction, to the point. No problem, just disable Secure Boot.   The PSU is adequate based  on the previous draw of 65W (GT 635),  your adding just 55W with GTX 1060 (120W total), and you committed an overall 150W increase.

I think "eligible" in this case means "eligible for Acer driver support".  My unoffical opinion (I don't work for Acer)  In other words, if you upgrade an Acer computer that's not on the list, then you're on your own to find drivers.  In most cases, Microsoft will automatically give you the drivers you need during the upgrade.   Windows 10 provides a 30 day rollback feature, but be sure to backup your files and make recovery discs or recovery USB drive prior to upgrading....just in case.   http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/29934/related/1/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xNDQ0MTU1ODA... Edit:  So you can click "ok, notify me when ready" and it will let you know when it is ready (Microsoft has all your drivers).Edit2: As to why a fairly recent computer isn't on the list...I don't have a guess.

Hi I have a Switch 10 32gb, it seems to be an eligible device. However, I don't receive the icon tray notification. But, in addition, how could I even think to update it to Windows 10 if this requires 16 gb free disk space? I guess this amount of GB was not even free when I bought it! So, how did you manage to update it?  ThanksFabio

A:Switch 10 eligible, but space will be never enough...

I solved with a "radical" solution and i got 18 Gb of free space after installing Win10 and Office. This is what i done: 1) Back up of all my data (documents, pictures etc)2) Hard Reset of my Switch 10 (Alt+F10 at startup, complete recovery option). With hard reset you'll have about 17 Gb free after Win 8.1 recovery. This will be enaugh for avoiding the "not enough space" error during Win 10 upgrade.3) Installation of the only required update to upgrade to Win 10 (KB 3035583)4) Upgrade to Win 10 by using Windows Media Creation Tool.5) Check for Windows 10 activation.6) Make a bootable USB stick using Windows Media Creation Tool.7) Perform a clean installation of Windows 10 by deleting ALL partitions (also the Win 8.1 recovery). (Power button + volume up to enter BIOS settings and set USB as primary boot device, remember to remove USB stick after first installation reboot, you'll not asked for) Steps 4 and 5 are mandatory because if you don't activate Win 10 by upgrading from Win 8.1 you will have activation issues (the product key of Win 10 is not the same of Win 8.1). With this solution you'll lose definitely your software warranty and support (that covers only pre-installed Win 8.1) but the hardware warranty is kept (i had this information by Acer Support Service). If you want to keep Win 8.1 recovery partition you'll have about 8 Gb less (10 free) after installation of Windows and Office. After installation i... Greetings,

Mods may want to pin this for easy reference:

Microsoft has provided a compatibility list to determine if your computer running Windows 10 is eligible for the Creators Update. Here is that list:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...puter-is/5152bb37-f95d-48a6-b7b2-ad0d5c738923

While most systems will eventually get Creators Update, older systems, designed with processors for Windows 7 to 8.1 may not. For example, Adom Clover Trail processors, were discontinued by Intel and were produced from around 2012-2014, so those machines will only get fixes up to Anniversary Update. Search online for more details. Computers that were manufactured with Windows 10 out of the box, should be fine.

Microsoft will provide older processors running Windows 10 Anniversary Update with Windows 10 Updates until 2023. For machines that are newer and can get Creators Update, Microsoft will support Anniversary Update until March of 2018. The cycle is that support for a Windows 10 build will be good for 18 months per each release of Windows 10 Feature Updates for the life of the device that runs Windows 10.

It is also recommended that only advanced users upgrade to the Creators Update manually. The automatic update process includes processor and hardware checks before the download happens automatically. You may bi-pass some of those checks if you do the update manually. You will be asked to review your privacy settings, before the update begins.

For some reason, Windows 8.1. downloader package refuses to see my 8GB SanDisk flash drive as a target for creating bootable Windows 8.1 installer USB media. A 16GB Patriot drive is detected and processed properly, but 8GB SanDisk is ignored. The same is true for the Windows 7 USB/DVD tool.

What could be causing this?

When I create the media on the 16GB drive, only 3+GB is used, which means that 8GB drive should be sufficiently large.

UPDATE: It appears that the SanDisk drive is not detected as "removable", so neither Windows 8 downloader nor Windows 7 USB/DVD tool see it as a valid target. There are quite a few reports of that issue on the Net. So, how do I create a bootable Windows 8.1 install media from that SanDisk drive?

If so, what are they?

There is no reason why using copy and paste won't give you a perfect copy and in my view it's more reliable than using the Windows backup utility.

One program I've found invaluable is Microsoft's SyncToy, which you can download here: Download: SyncToy 2.1 - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

It will sync files between folders of the same name on two separate drives or partitions ( I always use the Echo procedure).

You might also want to consider using Windows 7's Robocopy function.

I just purchased a pre-owned Lenovo T420 laptop with Windows 7, but amazingly, over these many years, I've never had to back up my OS before because someone (my tech guy mostly) had always done it for me. Anyhow, while I do intend to make a full system backup copy, which I have no doubt will include the Windows 7 OS, I would also like to create a backup (disk) copy of my OS only since no install disks came with the computer. I can load the Windows 7 OS onto an 80Mb CD, but the entire hard disk backup will take many gigabytes and I intend to use a 32 Gb flash drive for that purpose.

My first and essential question is, can I create a Windows 7 Pro "restore" disk by just copying and pasting the entire "Windows" file on my hard drive to a CD or Flash drive...or is there more to it than that?

When I started to create a backup copy of the entire disk using the Windows backup program, I took particular notice to the
fact that (after I selected the custom selection option rather than the automatic selection for which files to copy) that the Windows file was no longer listed on the "C" drive menu provided in the backup program. It is certainly listed on my "C" drive when I bring it up directly, so can anyone explain to me quickly what that's all about?

I have a double problem (I think). When I get emails with pictures from some people, their pictures appear as a blank box with a little red X in the corner. Since I get some pictures I always assumed this was something to do with the way they sent the email (or their email service). OR -is this really a problem on my end?

I have had people tell me the same thing happens when I send an email with pictures. If I forward an email with pictures it usually works OK, but if I try to copy the email (to clean it up and not have all the addresses and headers included from previous forwards) the pictures do not appear to my recipients. The email looks complete with pictures when I send it, but they don't get the pictures - just the box with a red X.

Do I have some setting on my computer or email that is causing these occurances?

I use Netzero webmail service, and have two computers - on with Vista and Windows 7. The people that aren't receiving my email pictures use various email services.....some web based, some not.

For the benefit of anyone who has a similar problem .... I eventually found this on the Yahoo web site

Yahoo Mail
We've recently updated our servers for your safety and now require a secure connection when accessing Yahoo Mail from a mobile device or mail client.

If you're using an unsecured connection, you'll receive a connection-related error. Don't worry, here's how to fix it.

POP server settings
Want to access Yahoo Mail from an email program like Outlook or Mac Mail? Here's the settings you'll need.

Incoming Mail (POP) Server - Requires SSLSecure Socket Layer
•Server: pop.mail.yahoo.com
•Port: 995
•Requires SSL: Yes
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - Requires TLSTransport Layer Security
•Server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com
•Port: 465 or 587
•Requires SSL: Yes
•Requires authentication: Yes
If your POP client doesn't offer TLS, you'll still be able to use SSL.

Login info - Requires authentication

•Email address: Your full email address ([email protected])

In my case I simply had to check the SSL box, which automatically set the incoming port to 995. It also set the outgoing to 25, which I reset to 587. Problem solved.

Would have been nice if Yahoo had warned me of the "update" in advance.

I have a Samsung Camcorder that my computer won't receive. I have downloaded the proper driver from www.samsung.com/uk and even called their technical support. They had me uninstall the driver then redownload and reinstall. It still doesn't work. They said there is nothing wrong with their drivers. They said they do not support windows issues. So here I am.

When I plug the camcorder into the camcorder the found new hardware box opens. It asks how I would like to install the software even though I have already installed it. I choose automatically then it searches for the software then it tells me the hardware was not installed because it could not find the neccessary software even though I downloaded the right driver from samsung.com and installed.

It seems as if maybe there is some corruption in device manager or something, I don't know. It does seem to some type of Windows issue.

PLEASE HELP!...

Thanks much

A:Windows won't receive my Driver

Not sure about that but you could try this:
Uncompress the driver to a location within your hard drive (I assume that you can extract the file somewhere, if not please post back with info on the driver file type) - Let's say C:\camcoder_driver. Then plug your camcoder to your PC and select install from a specific location. Point at the location you extracted the drivers. Hope this helps

When I check for updates it shows:
"You receive updates for : Windows only"
I've checked "Change settings" and there is no option to change it to "everything"
I'd like win8 update to function as it did in WinXp where it would check for all updates, ie Silverlite, hardware drivers, etc.
Is there a way to get that update function in Win8?
Thanks,
jimb

my self build desktop pc:
Win8x64. (The one that I purchased and downloaded from the Microsoft.com store.)

A:You receive updates for : Windows only?

Is there a "Get updates for other Microsoft Products. Find out more" link on the Windows Update page? If so that might help you.

If not, try this page:

My question involves upgrading a home desktop to Windows 7 Ultimate. I have a copy of Windows XP Professional and Windows Vista Ultimate which are Academic versions I purchased at a discount from my university. (I already purchased the Student Windows 7 edition for my laptop).

**Are the academic versions of Windows Vista Ultimate or Windows XP Professional eligible for the Windows 7 Ultimate Retail Box Upgrade?**

I do not want to purchase the Upgrade retail box version to then learn the Academic version of XP and Vista are not eligible for the Upgrade version of Windows 7 Ultimate. Or will I need to purchase the Full Retail Box version to upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate?

A:Academic XP Professional eligible for Retail "Upgrade"?

You are "Eligible" to upgrade from any version of xp or vista - but you can only perform in-place upgrades from certain versions, the fact that they are academic should not matter. But see Windows 7 Upgrade Paths for details about which versions can be upgraded in place.

Hi Guys

My friend recently installed windows 7 ultimate 32 bit on his laptop, everything went perfect and is running fine.

He then decided to also upgrade his desktop, he had successfully installed it and was able to get to the log in screen without any problems, once typing in his password and logging into to windows, the screen would flicker and go black and blue and sometimes the pc would shut itself off. The error which we could make out before the screen went off was 'Kernel driver has stopEd responding.' something to that effect, I can't remember the exact message. But we managed to figure it was an issue with the nvidia drivers, as it seems to be a wide spread problem with nvidia GeForce cards (my friend has a 8600gt). Now since then we decided to format the hard drive and perform a fresh install of windows 7. Now this wer things get interesting.

We booted from CD and ran the windows 7 installation, when the screen comes up to ask which partition/hard drive you want to install on, we formatted the hard drive on this screen and then tried to perform an installation, the installation started, but stopped at some point and we received a blue screen, now weneva we attempt to boot from cd, the windows installations files are loaded and the windows starting logo is displayed, but then we receive the BSOD.

I cannot provide you with any dump files as there is not operating system, but I have taken a picture of the BSOD that we receiving.

I'm running Windows Vista Basic Edition. I can send e-mails, but I can't receive. When the Windows Mail Program checks for new messages, it pops up the following error:

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10053. Error number: 0x800CCC0F

I called my internet provider, and they told me it wasn't a problem with their system, but a problem with Windows Vista.

Thanks for any help!

A:Windows Vista-Can't receive e-mails

From MS source

The problem is coming from an Incompability of the TCP/IP Protocol between your router and Windows Vista.

Your router requires a bios update to fix

G'day,

It's two problems, really, and I don't know if they might be related. I recently installed IE9 and since then I can no longer receive attachments via Windows Mail. I have checked all my settings and cleared the cache and nothing works. At the same time IE9 will not ask if I want to remember log-in details. Old details that were imported from IE8 work still work fine but I can not add new ones that will be remembered. Again, I cleared the cache, etc. It's extremely annoying, especially the problem with the attachments. Would someone help me out, please?

Cheers,
Fritz

Some new PCs running Windows 7 and 8.1 won't receive further updates

Ed Bott of ZDNet reports that users who tried to install the latest security updates on newer PCs running older versions of Windows were greeted with the following error:

Unsupported Hardware

Your PC uses a processor that isn't supported on this version of Windows and you won't receive updates.

It's worth noting that the move, while controversial, isn't exactly out of the blue. Microsoft had explicitly cautioned that new PCs sporting Intel's seventh generation Kabylake and AMD's Bristol Ridge processors would require Windows 10 in order to receive future updates. In August 2016, the company stated that:

Going forward, as new silicon generations are introduced, they will require the latest Windows platform at that time for support... Windows 10 will be the only supported Windows platform on Intel's upcoming "Kaby Lake" silicon, Qualcomm's upcoming "8996" silicon, and AMD's upcoming "Bristol Ridge" silicon.

That said, supported Skylake-based systems will be able to utilize Windows 7 and 8.1 throughout the extended support period for the two operating systems, which ends on January 14, 2020 and January 10, 2023 respectively.

Moving forward, while it may be possible to forcibly update older versions of Windows, it's clear that Microsoft wants its customers to upgrade to Windows 10. Businesses with Windows Enterprise lic... Read more

This was an intermittent problem but today seems to be permanent: I'm on Vista home premium, using Windows mail. I have a broadband connection. When I click Send/Receive the incoming mails arrive but I see a window headed "Windows Security" that asks me to Logon to my server (pipex) saying "please verify that both the username and password are correct". The "remember my credentials" box is already checked and however many tiems I enter my user name and password this window re-appears.
Webmail works fine for both send and receive.
I've had this problem ever since I got the new PC with Vista installed, (3 months ago) but until today it occurred only now and again and eventually I was always able to Send.
Also installed is FreeAVG antivirus and MSGTAG. The latter requires that my SMTP outgoing is set at 127.0.0.1

I have a question about a desktop workstation I purchased from Dell. The PC in question is a Dell OptiPlex 580 which came with an OEM installation of Windows 7 Pro x64. Please bear with the length of my post, and forgive me if I am not posting this in the correct forum. I?m not sure if there is a correct forum for this question, but here goes:

Is it possible to purchase a bad copy of Windows?

What exactly do I mean by ?bad copy?? I?m not talking about a pirated copy with a fake license. I mean, is it possible the copy of Windows that came installed on my system is damaged, corrupt, or incomplete? All the data on the OEM disc was transferred from somewhere, from something. When the manufacturer created this disc, is it possible that something went wrong? Why do I want to know? Well, here is my story:

About two years ago I purchased a brand new PC from Dell. I noticed within the first week or so, practically right out of the box, the PC crashed and displayed a BSOD. The PC crashed again about a week later. I was a little concerned when I saw the first crash, but the second got my attention for sure. However, every time I tried investigating an error code, the probable cause was always vague. I couldn?t find anything that pointed to that one ?silver bullet? fix.

I looked for answers everywhere, often on boards such as this one. The fixes suggested to me were numerous, well thought out, but all too often varied. ?It?s the hardware! It?s the software! It?s the... Read more

A:Is It Possible to Receive a Corrupted Version of Windows?

I don't know about the OEM DVD, however I used to do a lot of support on the Dell forums and we saw an occasional new PC with a bad disc image (load) and various problems. Reinstalling from the Dell recovery partition on the hard drive fixes this problem. These were "consumer" model PC's, not the commercial line such as an Optiplex.

However, in you case I would more suspect hardware than the software. I've never seen a corrupted Windows disc, or at least one that would cause BSOD.

BSOD's, depending on what happened can cause corrupt disc sectors, so I don't think its an actual hard drive problem.

Along with installing the OS, you also have to install all the Dell drivers. Windows 7 will install many drivers but not all drivers. On a "consumer" desktop the correct install is (1) Install OS (2) Install Dell Desktop System Software (3) Install motherboard chipset drivers (4) Install device drivers including video, Dell sound drivers, Ethernet, etc.

The Dell Desktop hardware forum section may be something to consider, with knowledgeable users helping users.

Sorry if this has been asked before but I could not find anything. When I first open Windows mail it will send & receive once. After that I get a error:

Some errors occured while processing the requested tasks. Please review the list of errors below for more details. But here is nothing is there.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Also what are some good Windows mail back up & restore programs.
For outlook express I used ABF Outlook Express Backup it was great worked every time. It would backup messages, contacts, rules, accounts, passwords for the email accounts, IE favorites etc. I can not seem to find a all in one program like that fow Windows Mail.
Thanks everyone

Michael
