having trouble downloading /updating

Q: having trouble downloading /updating

I just reformatted recently, wasn't having trouble, just felt it was time. After a fresh install of Windows 7 I get a pop up saying "digital signature required", after trying to install graphics driver. I tried downloading again but I don't think it installed correctly. Looking in the device manager it tells me this: Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)
I'm getting this for pretty much everything that requires one (digitally signed drivers)... Also there's a problem is preventing Windows troubleshooter from starting. I can't even update windows, says service is not running...
I'm on a HP Pavilion m6-1045dx Entertainment Notebook
I never had to deal with anything like this on any of my computers /laptops /desktops.. only this HP!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

On the weekend I mistakenly turned off the power while my desktop was shutting down. The computer then wouldn't start Windows and after various failed attempts at system recovery I did a factory system restore.

Last night I successfully downloaded MSE but with the status per screenshot below.

I clicked the Update button and it downloaded for over four hours before telling me the update failed because of lost internet connection. I'm on satellite internet and the connection can drop in and out.

I hesitate to try to update the same way again, with such a long wait, but will have to if that's my only option.

So I'm wondering if there is a better alternative?

Thanks in anticipation.

ETA - Thought I should add some info that may/may not be pertinent. Since the factory restore the desktop is running Windows 7 Home Premium (without Service Pack 1) and Internet Explorer 8. I had problems installing the Windows Service Pack, and was unable to upgrade to IE 11 without it. I intend to seek separate help for these issues on this forum, once I've followed the posting guidelines. Cheers.

Install the Visual C++ redist 2005, then VC++ redist 2005 SP1, then VC++ redist 2008, then VC++ redist 2008 SP1. Only restart PC after last one has finished and do them in order, one at a time. This will take quite a long time, let them finish. Then run windows update and select everything, in particular the updates for the VC++ redists (mainly security updates) and restart your PC again. Tell us if anything here fails and any error messages you get. Are any of your applications getting side by side configuration errors? Then try your program install again. Hopefully it will now work. Tell us what happens. Will try and post links later as this post sent off iPhone.

Hope this helps, though you may have already done this.

P.S. You could try sfc /scannow though I really doubt it will help.

I have Windows 7 SP1. From 161108 my Windows Update cannot find any new updates, it just searches for days and days. There are many posts on this subject, but I have not been able to solve the problem.
1. Is there a simple way to download and install updates manually (not using Windows Update)?
2. Would it be a very bad idea to stop updating Windows 7 from now on?

Best regards
Sven Ingvar J?nsson

A:Downloading Windows Updates manually or stop updating

Question #2:
Yes, it would be a VERY BAD idea to stop taking at least critical and important security updates from now on. MS now issues them all together in a monthly "roll-up", rather than individual updates. But there is a way to take only the "security" patches, instead of the combined security+performance patches.
Let's get your WU working first...

Question #1:
If WU is stuck on "checking for updates", you need to temporarily shut down that process/service in order to manually install the 2 most important patches that should fix it (3020369 and 3172605).

Let's try this:
IF NOT ALREADY DONE: Download and save, but do not run yet, the standalone installers for KB3020369 and KB3172605 for your architecture (32-bit or 64-bit).
Disconnect from the internet.
Disable the Windows Update service in both the applet itself ("never check for updates") AND from services.msc (change it to "manual" and STOP the service, then click "OK").
Run 3020369 and reboot.
Run 3172605 and reboot.
Go into services.msc and change WU back to "Automatic-delayed start" and start the service.
Reconnect to internet.
Change WU to "notify me, but let me choose".
Run a manual check for updates.
The concept is that you are going to install them from the standalone installers that you have downloaded locally to your computer, NOT via Windows Update.
So, if Windows Update is partially or fully enabled when yo... Read more

When I started a small consulting business in 2002 a client company allowed me to install MSOffice SP-1 which I later upgraded with MS Office 2003. Another user then installed Office XP Pro (why I don't know).

A:Trouble Updating Microsoft

I think I'd click the windows update button in the start menu, logon as a member of the admin group before you do.

That way, IE is automatically used.

If you have SP2 installed, you could also go to control panel>Automatic updates and click "notify me" since that should allow you to download updates manually.

You might need to download an active X applet to get them manually if you haven't done so in the past few months, or possibly run through their new genuine windows thing b4 you are given the green light atwindows update site.

You should do all you can to enable the manual updates, as that is the prefered method, imho.

Also, you could visit the site, copy the URL, and paste it into the "trusted sites" when you go control panel>internet options>security tab>highlight the "trusted zones" icon>press 'sites" when it blacks in from default gray. Apply and exit.

By doing these things, it will become more apparent which your problem is:
1. malware redirection -or-
2. configuration of winXP itself

post again of any difficulties or success, please.

A:Trouble Updating Drivers

Hello lonogod,I don't recommend third party driver download software nor do I recommend Microsoft Updates for third party drivers. They may deliver drivers that are similar but aren't necessarily tested for compatibility with your particular hardware. That can lead to system instability and BSODs. This is particularly important with notebook computers where drivers need to work very closely with the installed hardware for energy saving modes. The only place to obtain reliable, stable third party drivers for your hardware is from the computer manufacturer's or hardware manufacturer's website. If your computer is an OEM product (Toshiba, Sony, Dell, HP, etc.), the best drivers for your specific model would be found on their website. If your system is home built, then the best drivers will be found on the motherboard site (Gigabyte, Asus, etc) and the manufacturer's site of any add-on components (graphics - nVidia, ATI, etc).I am attempting to update my drivers because my computer has been crashing a lot lately and someone told me that updating my drivers might be a good place to start. If you are interested in persuing why your computer is "crashing", we would need to gather a little more information about the problem computer. It might prove helpful in pointing toward a solution.1. ) Please follow this link: BSOD Posting Instructions Windows 8 - Windows 7 - Vista.Follow all instructions with the exception of:Create a new thread HERE and atta... I'm trying to update my Nvidia 680i SLI motherboard's BIOS. I've followed the instructions, and wrote the file onto a writable CD, and set my cd-rom to the first boot device. But when I restart the computer it does not boot from the cd. What gives? How do I get the computer to boot from the CD?

For a couple of weeks now, I've had these windows updates that wouldn't finish installing. I've been trying the recommended solutions that I could find but nothing really helps.

I've tried repairing the Microsoft .NET framework but it fails to repair for some unknown reason.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled it both manually and through windows updater, both failed.

Can you please help me?

Thank you.

A:Trouble Updating .NET framework 4

Let's try cleaning up your .NET framework...Download, unzip, and run the dotnetfx_cleanup_tool. It will remove the .NET framework from your computer so that we can reinstall it later. After running this cleanup tool, it should ask you to reboot. Please do so.Next, download and install dotnetfx35.exe. This will reinstall the .NET framework onto your computer. Note: this is a large file, and could take some time to download depending on the speed of your internet connection. After another reboot, download and install dotnetfx35setup.exe. This will update the .NET framework to version 3 SP1.If you need any more updates for the .NET framework, Windows Update should find it for you (assuming updates are set to automatically download and install).

You may be infected with Poweliks or Xswkit (aka Gootkit, a Poweliks clone) which typically affects the ability to browse or download files using Internet Explorer and causes PowerShell error alerts. Task Manager typically shows numerous occurrences of (COM Surrogate) dllhost.exe or dllhst3g.exe. If using a 64-bit version of Windows, then these entries will be listed as dllhost.exe *32 or dllhst3g.exe *32. These processes are known to spawn and consume a large amount of system resources. When attempting to download files in Internet Explorer you may receive the message "Your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded." or you may see a pop-up alert advising that "powershell (powershell.exe) has stopped working".If you are having trouble downloading files with Internet Explorer, follow these instructions to re-enable downloads/reset all Security zones to default.

Hi all.

I couldn't find any threads that cover my exact issue and I assume that this is the correct section of the board to post in... anyway, my issue is as follows:

IE8 won't allow me to download any programs. The download box pops up as normal and the progress bar goes to 100% but then it just closes and the download is nowhere to be seen. The search function won't find it either; the program is not on my computer.

The only bits of advice I've found online is to download Firefox (which would be great if it wasn't for the initial downloading problem) and also altering permissions in the Component Services bit (dcomcnfg), which did nothing.

I've also turned off Windows Firewall and am using Kaspersky 2011 with all permissions set so that it doesn't delete stuff automatically.

I also had an issue with uTorrent that I believe to be related: Whenever I clicked on a link to download a torrent, uTorrent wouldn't pick up on the fact that I was attempting to add a torrent to the download list. I was able to add a new torrent by inputting the URL but they would invariably fail.

(Foolishly, I had a bit of a tantrum and uninstalled uTorrent so as to install BitComet but then realised that I couldn't download that anyway. I blame quitting smoking.)

Any ideas?

My computer recently crashed and I reinstalled the operating system to fix it. Unfortuneatly though, when I tried to download AIM the "download box" immediately dissapeared; making me unable to download it. I tried downloading other things, such as Flash, but everytime the download box opens, it closes alomst a nano second after it opens. Then same thing happens whenever I try to download things from my email too!

Is there some way to fix this problem?

I have Windows Xp and Internet 6

A:Downloading Trouble

Certainly. Make sure all drivers are installed. And try getting Microsoft updates then downloading and installing other software.

The worst case scenerio would be : you had a bad stick of ram and windows installation was corrupt. However I think you will be able to solve this problem with windows updates.

My downloads timeout, or they say completed and when I open them its only about a quarter of the file I downloaded. Is there a manager or something I can download to continue unfinished downloads or to stop from only getting partial downloads.

Any help welcome.

I have tried to download service package 2 several times and it gets about halfway done and then stops with a prompt that says "access denied". If you have any ideas, I sure would appreciate it. I seem to be unable to download some programs because they seem to require the sp2.

A:trouble downloading sp2

try downloading the redistributable package from the following source, this will allow the entire install to go ahead without your computer going online

I am trying to down load [email protected] and when ever I do, it say "Error writing temporary file. Make sure your temp folder is valid". The icon is on my computer, but I keep getting that message whenever I click it and I can't listen to the radio. What does that mean and what do I need to do in order to get the radio to work? I have Windows 97 or 98 and I have downloaded this and other items before, but now I can't. Thank you.

Try http://ns-radio.netscape.com/radio/radioclient/radioweb/html/download.html

I sometimes download programs that have icons that look like this:
 unknown_icon_download.bmp   3.06KB
16 downloads how can you download them on Xp it just says choose IE or select from list.

A:Trouble Downloading?

The icon you see traditionally means that there is no application set to open the file in question. or that the file in question is corrupt. For example, downloading a microsoft word document and not having microsoft word instaled on the system. Could you say what the file is that you are downloading?

I am having trouble downloading anything from any website whether it's through IE, Netscape or AT&T browser. When I go to any website to download, computer acts like it's downloading, but the end result is a large solid window, except for a small white square in the upper left hand corner of this large white window. Within that small white square there's a even smaller red square in it's left hand corner. Then below that is a blue triangle. Then to the right of those two small objects, there's a small black circle. I have searched and searched the internet for any explanations, but to no aval. Even AT&T couldn't explain it either when they tried to use their remote assistance to help me with downloading their software. I have taken a picture of this weird looking icon with my cell phone. If anyone out there would give me their cell phone # I'll send the picture to you. I have dug deep into IE's internet options, but don't see anything that should be blocking me from downloading. All options are checked that allows downloading. Please help!

It sounds like you have a "download manger" installed and that it's, giving you grief. Do you have say ""Real Download" or something similar installed?

Use your Windows Search to find Log Files. Since there's a lot there, zero in on the date of the event and see what the file relating to your problem says. It will be in plain text so you'll have no trouble reading it.

I don't know whether this is an XP or an IE thing...

I inhereted this laptop at my company. I have full admin rights to it, btw.

This is kind of tough to explain. When I go to download certain types of programs - not files with a direct link to the file, but something that's supposed to run an installer on my machine - I don't get a prompt to download the software and the files don't start to download.

For example, go to http://download.sidestep.com/get/k00...&param=onlyGet

If you click I Agree, it should start to download a file. Except on my machine, it won't. I've had this same problem at other sites and it's becoming a major issue - I can't DL the webconferencing software we use, either.

I've gone into IE tools/Security/Custom Level and made sure that everything in ActiveX will download (or at least prompt me), but I don't get the pop-up box to download these types of programs. I've dropped my security levels to the bare minimums, but that didn't help either.

For what it's worth, the Sidestep site listed above gives me this error message:
This is taking too long.
A few possible reasons why your download is failing:
You are using pop-up ad prevention software that prevents our registration windows from opening.

You are blocking JavaScript and/or ActiveX with your browser configuration, firewall, or anti-virus software.

You are in an office and your company has blocked your computer from downloading programs that m... Read more
