I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: {SOLVED} Windows reboting...ram or Power check

Well if the system just randomly reboots it is more than likely the PS(Power Supply). The RAM maybe, or even if the Processor is getting to hot. The PS is the easiest to check. Look at the FAN on the PS. Is it slow or fast? If slow then maybe it is getting weak. Next would be to open the system and disconnect the CD-ROM Drives and maybe a ZiP drive if you have one. Disconnect any USB devices that use system power and not thier ow power source. This would be like a webcam or some other small device. Printers, scanners and other large devices don't apply. Also remove your sound card, modem and/or NIC(network interface card). Leave the video card in for obvious reasons. Fire up the system and see how long it stays on. IF it stays on for as long as you have it on then it is a weak PS. If not then it might be the RAM or even the Processor. GOOD LUCK and let me know how everything works out. OH YEAH, if the system still turns off I would replace the PS before troubleshooting the other devices, because it is the cheapest device. Like $25 to $50.

Hey everyone, can any one help me - I will try and explain as best I can...
My computer every now and again makes a churnign sound, freezes and the ngives me a blue screen which says that it is dumping physical memory.
I tried to run check disk on the c: drive but a box tells me that 'windows was unable to complete the disk check'.
I also noticed that I tried to analyze the disk for defragmenting but nothing happens it simply says that 'disk defragmenter could not start' - I have 23% disk space left (if that means anything).
If anyone can help, I would be very grateful.
Thank you.

Someone... Please HELP! I did an automatic windows update last night. Now, my computer is so sluggish that I can't use it. (I'm a freelance digital designer) It is slow to load... but eventually does. And then, it creeps at openning programs. Now, when the computer is on, I get a Windows message: Virtual Memory Minimum is Too Low.

I cannot access the internet because AOL won't load properly. (I'm at a friend's computer right now) I am able to start in "Safe Mode" so I did and uninstalled the latest Windows update using "add/remove" but that didn't help. I also deleted the contents in the Temp Folder for all users and the Temporary Internet Files. I searched for f3initialsetup1.0.0.8.inf to delete it from my Downloaded Program Files but I didn't have it. I maintain my PC well. I use Norton Anit-Virus 2006 and update my definitions regularly. I disc defrag once every month.

Here is my hijack log. I'm desperate. I know I have a lot of programs running at startup. I'd like as little running as possible but I'm not sure what to do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

So a coworker has asked me to fix his computer. The "System Check" Malware has been installed and seems to have other stuff as well. I have ran my usual tools, Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, and while the "system check" window no longer shows up. I cant help but feel that there is more on this system. When I click the start orb, on the right side of the start menu where Computer, control panel, ect are supposed to be, there is nothing, just white space. And on the left side where the recent apps are supposed to be, again nothing just white. The only way that I can access computer is through searching for computer in the windows start menu. I can if need be have access to a boot cd.

Any help on this would be great!

A:Power Supply check

Hi Panais,

No software that I know of, you can use a multimeter to check voltages on the various lines and thus work out current draw on the PSU and thus the power.

The easiest way is to add together the power "wattage" rating of each of your components (info should be available in documentation or on manufacturer's web site) a total of all the ratings at their highest load figure should give a worst case figure which should be less than your rated peak PSU output. The total of the "normal " Load figures of all the components that are working at the same time should be less than your continuous rating for the PSU.

This is of course an exercise based on quoted figures each component is different and also may vary over time.

Is this a general question or do you have reason to think the unit may not be upto the task?

Im running WIndows Vista, with all current updates.

Its a new laptop aswell, so can't see that there would be much of a problem.

Cheers for any help.

Hey,

Apparently I fell asleep in front of my computer around 1 am (<.<) and when I woke up around 3 or 4 am, the power was out. I turned off the switch on my psu and just went to bed.

I just got up now and saw the electricity was back, so I turned on my PC. It said windows was not shut down properly, so I just went about starting Windows normally and didn't receive any errors afterwards. I restarted it a couple times, then powered down completely, turned off the switch again, and then discharged the motherboard's capacitors.

My question, I know power outages can be pretty damaging. Do you have a checklist of things I should check for, in terms of damages?

When I fell asleep in front of the comp, the only program running on the computer was an instant messaging app, so I'm pretty sure the HDD should be fine, but I will be running Drive Fitness Test/Western Digital Lifeguard, but I'd really like to know if I should run any other tests or procedures to see if any component (from the psu to the cpu) was damaged in any way.

Any tips are appreciated

A:Power Outage, What Components Should I Check?

If it boots up fine when you turn the machine on then you may have been lucky and no damage has been caused. The most obvious cause of damage after a power surge would be the machine not booting, or creating errors and crashing.

I cant tell if mine is dead or not, its a new case.

You cant plug in the Power connecter to the mobo wrong, its a 24pin on mobo but
20 pin fits fine, im doing it with other cases too.

Plz forgive me if this isn't the right forum to post this question. Its both a hardware and software query..

I recently re-verified the Novice part in my name wherein I accidentally flipped a switch that controlled the outlet that my power strip was on.. and made an ever dumber mistake by quickly flipping the same switch back "on."

My desktop is connected to a power strip, a pretty old one, that's suppose to act as surge protection.

I tried to start the desktop back up, but it was clear that the while the PSU was fine, the hard drive and the Mobo seemed to be experiencing difficulties. The screen was just blank with little to no indication of life. I manually turned off the desktop and restarted it twice in the same fashion. When nothing came up, I turned off the PSU to dissipate any remaining charges.

After turning the PSU again, the mobo (asus) finally reappeared and everything loaded, including the OS (XP Pro). Firefox reloaded everything from cache, so apparently nothing (software wise) seemed askew. I did notice the Quick Launch bar was missing, so I'm guessing my windows profile might have been affected slightly..

My question - aside from Window's HD error check (full 5 out of 5, the type that runs before the OS loaded) what other check-ups should I do to test if my desktop was damaged by my accidental self inflicted power outage?

Any hardware checks? Software-wise? OS-wise?

p.s. if it makes any difference, my PSU is a thermaltake W01... Read more

Hello,
I am new to self builds and have face some serious probs on the way. thought i had id down and everything working fine for a couple of weeks. I added a third monitor through to DP on Monday it is now Friday. everything been running fine but just this morning the PC turned off for no reason twice in the space of 30 minutes. I know i should check tempratures but unsure where to down load the software and also what recommended temps should be. Any help would be appreciated

A:power down for no reason how do I check temps

Your power supply might not be enough for everything you're trying to run. Have a read here
Allied AL-D500EXP 500W power supply review and even though not exactly the same model it's basically the same. For your temps you can Download something like HWMonitor here
CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting
Let us know what temps it reports. Also get rid of Avast and use MSE with the free Malwarebytes for weekly scans

I probably need to replace my power supply in my computer with a more powerful unit. How do I find out the output of my current ps?? Are they difficult to replace yourself or should a pro do it?? Also whats involved in replacing the cooling fan yourself? Im upgrading my pc to play games. Flightsims, etc and I have been told I will need to more than likely upgrade these things when I get a better graphics card. I have a dell E310 pentium 4, xp, I gb ram. A:How do I check the specs of my power supply?

If your Dell computer was manufactured after August 1998, it may require the use of a proprietary Dell power supply. Although the Dell power supply looks like a standard ATX, it is a non-standard PSU that cannot be replaced with a standard power supply alone. Because of this design difference your Dell Power Supply may need a Dell to ATX power supply converter in order to be replaced with any standard ATX Quiet Power Supplies.

Pentium 4 Dell Models that do not require a power supply adapter:
Dell Dimension 4300, 4400, 4700, 8200, 8300, OptiPlex GX 400

Pentium 4 Dell Models that are not compatible with this power supply adapter:
Dell Dimension 8100
http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e/std/sku=dellconverter
open the case from the side
Remove 4 screws on the back of the power supply
Unplug everything from the power supply

Reverse the process your done. No real big deal. just make sure you know the power supply you purchase will work with a dell or the adapter you but with the power supply will work as well.

How do I find out the output of my current ps??
Look at the lable on the power supply it will tell you.

Also whats involved in replacing the cooling fan yourself?
Depends on what fan you are speaking of? the case fan? not much just remove it and replace. if your speaking of the cpu? a little more in depth, the stock heatsink+fan usally work and no reason to change unless overclocking.
What is your current graphics card? what are you planning upgrading to? pls lis... Read more

My friend's laptop won't turn on. It doesn't start to boot or anything. My first thought is it's either the battery or the A/C adapter but I'm not sure how to check those without having swappable pieces (which I don't have.)
I took the battery out and tried to power on with just the A/C adapter plugged in and same as with the battery in, only thing that happens is the little light with the lightening symbol flashes 3 times. Also the little light where you plug the charger in lights up while the charger is in. Would the laptop power up with just the A/C adapter plugged in and no battery?

How to run chkdsk or System File Checker (SFC) from the Recovery ConsoleBoot your Vista or Windows 7 installation DVD
When you see "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD", press Enter
At the "Install Windows" screen, click on Repair your computer at lower left
At the System Recovery Options screen, make note of the drive letter assigned to your boot drive (normally C: ) and click Next
At the Chose a Recovery Tool window, click on Command Prompt. You will be sitting at X:\Sources directory
Run chkdsk or SFC
If you did not note the drive letter of your boot disk, you can enter bcdedit and look at the osdevice line to see what it is.
For chkdsk, type chkdsk c: /r and press Enter (use the letter from above if not C: ).
For sfc, type sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows and press Enter (use the letter from above)
Let either run to completion undisturbed.

Vista or Windows 7: If you don't have a install DVD, you can download a legal copy here:
Windows 7 Direct Download Links
Windows Vista Direct Download Links

Make sure you get the same version you have installed: 32 or 64 bit; Home Premium, Pro or Ultimate.

The problem start with my wife's PC. It started a few weeks ago she told me. She can't open Outlook Express (doesn't start), access My Space or get updates at Windows Update. Also some images on sites do not load.

I then checked my PC and found, I couldn't access Windows Update, My Space, Thunderbird fails to retrieve emails. I have not noticed any issues with images.

Given this sounded like some of the behaviors I have heard of trojans doing I thought I would post my logs here and see if anyone sees anything out of place. Normally I wouldn't consider a cross contamination but about two weeks I temporarily set up a home network between our PCs to share a few files. The next day I disabled NetBIOS on my PC but as we are both behind a hardware firewall, I guessing if it happened it must have happened then.

Nothing jumps out at me but I wanted to get a second opinion.

Any help would be appreciated.

He wanted me to help with his cdrom it would not play he has not got a burner just the cdrom.

He has 3 harddrives in his computer, why I don't no but he has windows Pro on a 5 gig drive and the he has I think a 20 gig harddrive and a 40 gig harddrive. Trying to make this short he told me that everytime he put in a disk in the cdrom an error comes up and say put a disk in or no current disk in drive, he has his cdrom on a drive G, He had the 40 gig harddrive hooked up and on the same ide line he had his cdrom. he had the harddrive as slave and the cdrom as master I told him he should change them that the cdrom should be slave (I am right on that I hope) anyway the lite comes on when you put a cd in the tray you can hear it trying to start the whirring noise and in device manager every thing is ok. I uninstalled in device manager and then rebooted thinking it might be a corrupted driver but did not help it says it is working properly. Then he said after that ,, that the cdrom quit working right when he hooked up the new 40 gig hard drive. He unplugged the new harddrive and we just kept the cdrom on that ide (by this time we had already changed the cdrom to slave) but even with just that on and the harddrive unhooked you get the same error. should we leave the 40 gig harddrive out and now try the uninstall and reboot to see if that helps or any id...

I turned my emachine T2825 desktop off to move it. I plugged it back in and tried to turn it on but now it does not boot up, nothing on the screen. The blue indicating light around the power switch does not come on but the hard drive amber light is on and the processor fan is on all the time. I have been reading several threads with simliar problems on this PC and it sounds like the motherboard went bad and it is possible the power supply caused it to go bad. I have check my voltages and I get the 12 and 5 vdc at all my plugs. I have replaced the power supply with another 250w P.S. but it still won't boot up with the same results as before. Before I invest in another mother board I would like to make sure the power supply is bad or not. Is there a check for this? Also do these syptoms indicate a bad motherboard?

Thanks,
Gary

A:How do I check power supply on an emachine T2825

I would have to agree that it sounds like a bad motherboard...make sure that everything else is SEATED correctly, especially the video card.

You can get a 15 dollar tester from a computer store that allows you to test the P-Supply...Otherwise, you might google on home ways to test it.

My power went out for ten seconds yesterday, and when my desktop computer re-booted, I got a message saying drive D (hard drive) had to be checked for disk consistency. It passes the test and the desktop appears. Then the whole computer freezes. Does anyone know how to resolve this issue? Once the desktop appears, the whole computer freezes so I can't access anything.....

A:Check disk consistency after power failure, freezes

I suggest trying to boot into safe mode.

If successful, then initiate a chkdsk /r on the boot drive.

Start/Run...type chkdsk /r (with space between k and /) and hit Enter.

Type Y in response to onscreen message and hit Enter.

Reboot the system. The chkdsk /r will run before the system boots to the desktop. After the chkdsk /r has completed, the system will boot into XP automatically.

Hi, my mom's pc and mine were recently hit by viruses. I downloaded some patches, etc. from Microsoft. My pc is OK but my mom's now has a blue screen that says 'please check signal'. Only the screen comes on for 1 minute- can't get anything when we try to power on. :dead: Unplugged everything, replugged it, tried combinations. Just before this, the system would run a debugging program that would freeze everything up. Mom was getting the blue screen before, but she found out that switching the power surge off, then on, fixed the problem. Sorry, I'm new to this site but was hoping for some info because everyone wants to charge her $80 to $100 just to discuss the problem, not to fix it. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
