Wireless Card Issue or Software Issue

Q: Wireless Card Issue or Software Issue

I am having problems with my internet connection and my connections tray in general. I keep losing my internet connection and then when I try to repair my connection, it doesn't respond. Nothing in the connections tray will respond. When I go to reboot, I get the message that the connections tray is not responding and I have to end it. Does anyone have any experience with this or know what might be happening? Today I called IBM .. I have an IBM Lenovo X61 Tablet .. they told me I needed to reinstall my drivers for my connectivity (they called it the wireless stack .. I downloaded something for power management, hot key driver, wireless card connections, access connections) .. I did that and am still having the same problem .. any suggestions? .. I would appreciate any help! ..

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Ok - I have a monitor that seems to have ghosting (when the start items appear they have a light ghostly gray that travels vertically a crossed the screen - you can see throw them but its anoying). I thought it was a monitor issue - but I pluged a laptop in and it looks great. I updated the drivers for both the video card and the monitor, but it still looks like crap. Any ideas?? What do you have running near the video cable when it's connected to the PC that generates RFI/EMI? It sounds like an interferrance issue and possibly a cable shielding problem.

Hi, I'm having a weird problem with Vista Home Premium (32bit).

About 10 days ago, I came home from a trip to discover that my wireless connection on my Vista desktop had gone down. I restarted the computer, and when that didn't solve the problem, I restarted my wireless router. This usually fixes things, but this time it didn't - so I tried uninstalling ZoneAlarm free firewall. This didn't work either, so I tried disabling the Windows Firewall, releasing IPv6 & IPv4 through NETSH, running IPCONFIG, etc (everything that I could find on forums related to the topic).

I even bought a new a new USB wireless adapter and this didn't work either. I can view all of the WiFi hotspots in the neighborhood (and the detailed information such as encryption types) but I can't connect to them (or my own hotspot). I can connect but I get the "Connected with Limited Access" error.

When I try "netsh interface show interface", I get the following (condensed):
LAN - Disconnected
LAN 2 - Disconnected
Wireless Network Connection - Connected

However, when I run ipconfig /all, I get this:

OS: Vista Ultimate 64 Bit

Ok, I have a laptop with the above OS on it. The problem started about a month ago when I installed a 3rd party video card driver (GeForce Go 7600) because the old one couldn't run Fable. I have roll backed the driver to the previous one, but the problem persisted.

I'm not sure if the problem is exactly due to the driver, because it may have started earlier, I'm not sure.

What's happening is: When I right click on the network connections icon the tray, it does odd things. It always tells me the computer if off line even though I'm connected perfectly, Sometimes it ignores my right click until I restart the system. Sometimes it comes up but i can't click any options. Other times it loads the network connections window, but never responds. Although sometimes it will load after an hour or two. I created a second user account to see if it still happens. It loaded and gave me a network selections menu and I was able to connect, but still told me I was off line.

Is there a way to fix this? Also, if no-one ever seen this problem before I'm considering going to a clean version of my OS. I don't have access to my installation CD for a few weeks, is there a way to reformat my drives and redo my OS without the disk?

Another kind of off-topic question. I noticed I didn't have the ability to copy-paste in the second user account I made, even though I made it full admin. Is that working as intended or a glitch? If it's intended, how do I get rid of... Read more

I have a realtek 8188ce built into my Toshiba laptop. Initially windows 8 detects it and it works fine, however after a restart (or 2) the device manager will report that the device cannot start or simply wont detect the wireless card at all. I've also downloaded the latest drivers from realtek and the problem persisted.
The only way I can temporarily fix the wireless card is to go into the device manager, restore hidden devices and remove the wireless card. Windows will detect it upon restart and it will work fine again. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi there, long time reader, first time poster.

Had a weird issue last night while I was streaming a movie. Apparently Asus LiveUpdate was running in the background and ran into a problem, as it shut down my HDMI output and asked me to reboot. When I did, neither the wireless driver or the NVidia driver were working. The wireless driver was a simple fix - just uninstalled, scanned for hardware changes, and voila. The Nvidia driver I just downloaded and reinstalled from their website, and it hasn't given me an issue since. The wireless driver, however, will make me go through this 'scan for new hardware' dance every time I restart my computer before it will work. Here's what I tried so far:

1. Downloaded the latest driver from Intel's website. Same problem on restart.
2. Uninstall other wireless drivers that might interfere. No dice.
3. Uninstall wireless driver, restart, let it install that way. STILL made me go into device manager and reinstall before any networks would show up.

I'm really at a loss here. I made sure to have my anti-virus off while installing, so I can't figure out what the problem is. My specs are below. I installed the wireless card myself after I got the laptop, since the stock one didn't support 5Ghz networks, but it has never given me an issue till now.

I'd appreciate any suggestions y'all can offer. I'll be sure to post back if I somehow fix it.

A:Wireless card issue on restart

I believe I just figured it out. The first time I reinstalled the driver, it must have defaulted to allow the computer to turn off my wireless card to save battery. If anyone finds themselves in this predicament, here's where I went to fix it.

FYI. I had a problem with my TL-WN620G card and Windows 7 releases 7000, 7100 & 7127. The drivers would install fine, however, Win 7 was unable to connect to the internet without me setting up my wireless connection.

After a reboot Win 7 would not connect unless I either reconnected the card or set the network connection up again. I have now resolved the issue by using the Atheros AR5005-UG drivers.

If anyone is having a similar issue I would suggest you try and find the chipset your wireless card is using and to try drivers from the chipset provider.

I've got the same wifi adaptor as you. I've been able to use it with the driver provided by TP-Link, but I'm having trouble with it when my computer resumes from standby. Every now and then it'll trigger a blue screen of death upon resuming (well I'm suspecting its the wifi adaptor), or the device just won't start after standby unless I unplug it and plug it in again.

Where did you find the Win 7 driver for the Atheros AR5005-UG?

Hi all, Here on a T530 running W7. Latest PM driver caused an issue with OSD display, read some other threads talking about that.Wanted to point out that this driver caused a severe issue with my Intel Centrino N6300 wireless card too. After latest PM driver update, it could not work properly. The card was stuck to very low rates (56mps to 144 mps). After removing the network set up in order to figure it out and trying to reset the wifi connection, the system would just reject the setup 9 times/10, in spite of a correct config/wifi password... Been struggling with this until I went back to previous PM driver. A real pain in the @ss...!!After rollback, the wireless card is now working as before like a charm... Thibaut

I'm using an NVidia 8500 GT video card.. or I was. Over the last few weeks, every once in a while my monitor would get no signal. Once I restarted the computer, the signal was restored and everything was fine.

I got a pretty bad virus this weekend, and shortly after I managed to finally fix my system, my video card no longer sends any signal at all. It doesn't matter which port on the card I plug my monitor into, I get no signal. Restarting no longer solves the issue.

The monitor works fine if I plug it into the VGA port on the back of my computer, so I know its not that.

When I opened the tower up, I noticed it was pretty dusty inside.

My question is this:
Was the timing just a coincidence? Is my card fried to to dust buildup/overheating, or did the removal of the infected files somehow remove something that allowed my card to be detected and run?

Hello all,
I am having an issue with my wireless internet connection. It has worked well for 5 years, but a few days ago I suddenly lost connectivity. Checked the wireless switch on my Dell 1737 laptop, good. Replaced my Intel 5100 wireless card with a new one. It is not recognized by Device Manager, but the driver shows up under Control Panel, Programs. Tried just about everything. Do you think I am looking at an out of box hardware failure? I have checked and rechecked the seating and coaxial connectors to the new board. This one has me stumped. Any suggestions? Kind regards.

Hello all,

I recently built a computer for the first time and everything went pretty smoothly. I currently have 2 partitions, one is Ubuntu (hardy) and Windows XP 64 bit. I installed the drivers for the wireless card in XP and I have an icon in the system tray with an X through the signal bars. When I double click on the icon in the system tray an interface comes up with buttons such as link info, configuration, advanced... etc. The only problem is when I click the buttons, nothing displays in the display area. I think it must be because its a 64 bit operating system but im unsure.

I tried to update the drivers via device manager but it says that the drivers are already up to par and what not. I cant set up a wireless connection through the control panel either but thats probably because everything else needs to be fixed first.

I can get Windows 98, 2000, Vista Business (64 and 32), XP (64 and 32), and a whole bunch of server OSs for free from school so Im currently downloading vista 32 bit to try out the card because I know its compatible and I will try a third partition to see what I can do.

The card is a Hiro H50169 Wireless G Network Adapter - 802.11g, 54Mbps, PCI I purchased from tigerdirect. Its running on an ASUS mobo and as far as I can tell its physically installed correctly.

Any guidance/help at all would be appreciated as I'm such a novice with all of this.

A:Solved: Cant connect wirelessly... Maybe wireless card issue?

The computer's a year old, running XP, and my boyfriend and I have no idea what's wrong with it (it's his). I'd put in hardware support but I don't know which piece of hardware may be corrupted, exploding as we speak, or what.

It began last night. He's done this before -- he has two monitors, one meant for a TV (I believe) and another old computer screen. Normally it runs on the TV one because it's bigger. He switched to the older one to show me how he can adjust the settings so that it's all vertical. That was great and dandy and we didn't expect any issues. He's done it before and it really isn't doing much to the computer.

Later, after midnight, he goes to switch everything back to normal. First, the computer acts like the monitor is there but that it can't do anything -- it tries to go into sleep mode or something. Then I suggest he unplug, shut down, plug things back in normally, and power back up. This appears to work.

I was a bit happy then, until we got to the XP loading screen. It's going... and then after, it flashes, then goes black. Nothing comes up, nothing does anything.

And so the three hour saga of last night begins. We restart, we spam F8, we get into safe mode, he disables Nvidia but can't open the application. Nor does his mouse function in safe mode (I know some don't, but it really doesn't help the situation). I've used my laptop to bring up shortcut keys and we're functioning through everything that way. He restarts after disabling Nvidia, an... Read more

Hello forum,
So I just updated my Nvidea graphics card, and for some reason after restarting my laptop, in order to install these files to the system, the "System Thread Exception Not Handled" Blue screen error flashed on my screen, and later redirected me to an automatic repair screen, which attempted to fix this issue.
I ended up restarting the laptop on safe mode, uninstall my Nvidea graphics card and completely reinstall it from scratch.
But for some reason it keeps giving me the same error each time I restart my laptop.
After some research online, apparently there's an issue with Avast and Nvidea?
You will find attached the SF Diagnostic Tool grab all option files needed to view the issue at hand.
Any help would greatly be helpful.
Many are saying that I've not been installing the corrent drivers, but that's not possible, as it's directly from the MSI website (GT70 0NE) linked to the official Nvidea website, saying that the driver includes my graphics card (680M).
While other people are saying that maybe Avast is causing some issue towards the graphics card?
I have the Avast 2014 Professional Antivirus.
Laptop Specs:
Windows 8.1
MSI Dragon Edition 2, GT70 0NE, Intel Core i7-3630QM CPU @ 2.40 GHz 64 bit
Intel HD Graphics 4000
Any help would greatly be appreciated, I'm currently running my laptop without the nVidea Graphics Card Drivers, and seems to be fine so far.

Well I just found this forum today, so I decided to ask this question.

About a year ago, I had to system restore, because my computer just kept FSODing on me. When I went through the system restore process with Dell, at the end of the process I got an error. I don't quite remember what it was, as it was so long ago.

Ever since then, my computer has been completely without sound. I have tried everything from installing/reinstalling/uninstalling drivers, to the most simplistic, such as checking if my speakers work, or are connected.

So far, nothing has brought me any closer to figuring out what this problem could be. I am pretty sure that somehow, my sound card (its an integrated one) has just fried or something, but I really dont know.

So... is my sound card busted? Or are my drivers just not working for some reason?

Thanks for your help in advance.

A:Sound Card issue, or driver issue?

System restore . . .

System restore or system recovery? Did wipe the old operating system out and reinstall everything from scratch (system recovery) or did you use Windows' system restore to backdate the configuration. (Frankly, I think the choice these of terms by the industry are very confusing.)

Assuming system recovery and assuming the sound worked before and quit after system recovery, I'm for a misconfiguration. But, the simpler fix might be a cheap add-in sound card.

Hey, I recently put together a PC and I've been having problems with it since. When I initially built it, the specs were:

i7 920 2.67GHz
Asus p6t Motherboard
8gb RAM
500gb Sata II HD
ATI Radeon HD 3870x2 (the card with with 2 GPU's)
500W unbranded PSU
1 added 120m coolermaster fan

Shortly after I started using my PC there was a power surge that knocked the power supply out. I recently got a new power supply. A 650W Silverstone PSU that I thought was more than enough for this. The problem that would occur now is that the computer would restart during games and sometimes while processing/rendering videos in adobe premiere.

When I would enable the 'crossfire' option on my card (to enable both GPU's to work) the computer would no longer just 'restart' the entire screen would hang or the colours would go out of sync shortly after which I'd have to restart the computer. This having happened I assumed the problem was with the graphics card, not the new 650W silverstone I got. I upgraded to a newer card; Asus Nvidia Geforce GTX460 768mb. The specs are now as follows:

i7 920 2.67GHz
Asus p6t Motherboard
8gb RAM
500gb Sata II HD
Asus Nvidia Geforce GTX460 768mb
650W silverstone PSU
1 added 120m coolermaster fan

After upgrading, games like modern warfare 2 will restart in missions that has a lot of smoke, during a standard windows assessment process the computer will also restart.

A:PC restart during graphic-intensive tasks. PSU issue? GPU issue? Mobo issue?

You've got Asus motherboard, hence the first thing I'll look at considering the issues you are having, is at RAM settings/voltage in the board's BIOS, these should be exactly the same as on RAM packaging, but even that doesn't guarantee that it may not be the issue, so basically you'll need to fiddle around a bit with settings/voltage in case default specs doesn't work.

You may also consider stress testing your graphic card using OCCT (including vRam). Regards

So First off, I am sure most of you who are looking at this will think it is an easy fix, and trust me I wish it was. I have spent the entire day before this post searching for common fixes to issues, with no luck.

First off, here is the scenario:

I went go get on my PC that has been running flawless since December 2010, and the first thing I notice is it came back from sleep or idle, whatever you want to call it. This seems to happen now and then and I believe it happens because windows installed an update over the night (Wednesday 2/27/13). Normally this is no big deal, I go about my way and all is fine.

So I noticed that some open files I was working on in excel have duplicates, one set is read only, one is not. I closed all that down and we were all set. The other big thing is the Aero feature was dead. So I went online and hit ALL the usual fixes, running the diagnostic, downloading the specific MS diagnostic tool, resetting the service multiple times, restarts, even some registry updates I found. NOTHING worked. The interesting thing is the only part of aero that is not working, is the glass feature, and the peek feature. All the mouse icons and other attributes seem to be working.

I have an Nvidia GTX 460 card, so I updated to the most current form of the drivers, nothing. I delete the drivers and install the original CD drivers, nothing. I then delete the driver and try to use driver sweep to remove them. This is when I notice that I can not boot into safe mod... Read more

My computer crashed earlier in the ear and I had to send the hard drive off to have all of my information extracted manually off of the computer. They were able to retrieve the program and its contents but when I click on the application itself in the folder it won't allow us to open it. We had downloaded a new version of the program prior to getting the disc back but were hoping that instead of doing a backup restore that we could just open the old program but that is not happening. Can you please help. We can't even do a backup restore on the new program that we downloaded. Thank you!!!

The old program needs to be installed if intend to use it.

Have you tried Opening the old data file using the new version of the program?

I'm wondering if its possible, by some software means or whatever, to dig up why a computer would be freezing within a program.
This software im running is locking up on me periodically and i would rather like to know why. I thought it was bad ram initially, but that doesnt seem to be the case.
Any thoughts?

I have a new hp laptop running windows 8, I use only quoting software, it works fine on my win7 PC but just stops at the login on my laptop, the company said it was a antivirus issue so I turned it all off but still the same. Disappointed with windows 8, Mac ftw

FYI, new versions of MacOS often have similar compatibility issues. This is nothing unique to Windows.

The problem is that many software developers take shortcuts, and when something seems to work they ship it.. but a change that happens later breaks the undocumented behavior.

You can try enabling the Windows 7 compatibility functionality. If you're in the Start Screen, right click on the icon for the application and choose Open File Location, then right click on the applications icon and choose properties. Then go to compatibility tab and tick the checkbox "Run this application in compatibility mode for" and then select Windows 7 from the dropdown.

i got a logitech webcam and a micrsoft lifechat wireless headset, now whenever i turn off my computer in anyway at all, both stop working, the solution is to uninstall both, restart, reinstall both, restart, and then they work till i shut the computer off again, then i have to do it all again.

i hate doing this, so i was wondering if anyone else has a solution (both are usb, headset is plugged into front ports, webcam in the back, only other thing that is USB on my entire computer is my keyboard (zboard))

Okay, on my XP account on the home computer the application cctray.exe gets the following message after a bit: "'The Instruction at *insert value here* referenced memory at *insert value here* The memory could not be read" My dad's thinking it could be due to a virus. (he's paranoid about my online gaming and nothing I say will probably fix that) I believe it's just an issue of the application bugging out, or something else. Course the main problem is this only happens on my XP account. Should my dad log onto his account, no issue at all. *will post a dxdiag from the home PC asap if needed, is currently using a different PC*
So all I'd like to know is if this is due to a virus, an application bug, or something else. Many thanks.

edit: I would like to add that I did scan with Ad-Aware and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and came up with nothing.

Hello, I am having a serious problem with my laptop. When it is switched on it only stays on for a couple of seconds before shutting down by itself, it then restarts itself but in SAFE MODE. Then after a few seconds again it shuts itself down and starts again in normal mode. This cycle just continues and i cant even use the start menu in any mode because it keeps shutting down.
Does anybody have a solution to this? I would be seriously greatful.

Thank you.

Hi Stephenmatt and welcome to TSF,

Considering you can't get into safemode there's really not much you can do. You can try running the Windows repair of the installation DVD and see if that gets you anywhere.

Otherwise I would recommend you to back up the data by plugging the harddrive into a PC and extracting the file. Then do a complete reinstall of the system.

Hello all,

I've had the machine for a little while and just finally got around to getting a blu-ray disc (BD) to watch. When I put it in the BD drive, Mediasmart opened automatically (as it should) and play back began. The problem is that while the sound works fine, the video is simply an massive solid green block. The entire screen is green with the audio for the film playing in the background. When it gets to the main selection screen the options appear just fine (Play movie, scene selection, bonus features, etc...) and where they're supposed to be on the BD but everywhere there is suppose to be video or graphics, there's just a giant square of green.

I've tried updating, but it continually says there's no updates. I've uninstalled and reinstalled a current version of Mediasmart with the same problem. I've updated windows and HP products to their latest versions. I've tried other programs (Media Player Classic, VLC, and DivX Plus) with no luck. One program told me I had to update my DirectX capabilities, but when I checked Windows update, I'm running the latest version of all relevant software and drivers. I have even checked to make sure the drive was in fact a BD player and it is (dual lenses along with the Blu-Ray logo). Also, to make matters more infuriating, I've tried the BD in other blu-ray players and it works fine and regular DVDs work fine on my machine.

This is very frustrating, obviously, and any help would be g... Read more

Please can you assist with my wireless connection issue.

I have just recently purchased the RTL8192CE wireless Lan 802.11 PCI-E NIC and installed it in my shuttle XPC. I am using Windows 8.1 64bit OS. The LAN card is picking up my wireless router fine, but when I enter my router password an error message appears. I have checked the driver and windows sates it's working correctly, notwithstanding I reinstalled the drivers given with the LAN card just in-case. But still I am unable to connect to my wireless router.

The DSL router works fine on all my other devices, iPhone, laptop, kindle etc. and just to make sure I called my DSL service provider and they reconfigured the router. But still when I enter the password to connect to the router, it will not connect to the internet?

My Windows 8.1 laptop does not play bass on external speakers. From what I hear on the headphones, it plays fine, but I could be wrong.

Anyway, I don't think it's a hardware problem, because the external speakers play from any other device perfectly. It's just the laptop that doesn't work. I've tried using Windows Media Player, VLC Media Player, and MusicBee. None of those work. Online (browser) bass doesn't work either.

So, what screenshots do you need? Any reports on what settings I have? Or any additional info about what software and hardware I'm using? Just let me know, and I'll post it for you.

Thanks in advance!

Make and Model # of your laptop?
go to Control Panel/Sound on the Playback tab, does it recognize your External speakers? Highlight the speakers and click the Configure Button, Test the speaker setup.

I now have a dual-boot Win7/Win10 P70.
After being very impressed yesterday with the fingerprint login functionallity in both Win7 and Win10 using the new fingerprint sensor on the P70, I was suriprised today when I rebooted the machine wo Win10 after having been off all night and the fingerprint option icon had simply disappeared from the Welcome screen.  Yesterday I had gone through the enrollment process in both Win7 and Win10, and everything seemed to be working perfectly. But today after starting the machine after haivng been powered off for many hours, it just disappeared from Win10.
I then repeated the Win10 enrollment (I think this is part of Windows Hello functionality), and sure enough it was now back again and seemingly working fine.
I then had to go back to Win7 to check something, and was surprised to find that even though the fingerprint icon was offered to me and I selected it, while Windows was now waiting for me to put my finger on the sensor the sensor itself was not active!  So I instead logged into Win7 via passwword and repeated the Win7 enrollment which I'd done yesterday.  And once again, everything now seemed to work fine across several re-boot tests to Win7.  I then stayed in Win7 to do what I had originally gone there to do.
Well, now I re-booted back to Win10, where just a while ago that third login icon for fingerprint had been present on the Welcome screen, and now it's once again gone!!  Disapp... Read more

A:P70 fingerprint software issue

Well that's great.  Since the fingerprint login icon for Win10 had disappeared on me, I decided to go ahead and re-enroll for the third time.  I got into Settings and then pushed the "remove" button for my fingerprint, and then pushed the "add another" button to start the process again.  That's how I had done it each of the two previous enrollments.
The dialog started, I entered my PIN, and then it asked me to scan my finger.  I put my finger on the sensor, and instead of registering it and moving on to asking me for the additional scans, Windows Hello apparently broke!

I've tried this five times now, including rebooting in between, but to no avail.  I guess something corrupted in the Registry now and I'll have to research how to "clean house" so that I can start over.
Grrr... and things were going swimmingly with my Win10 learning experience.

Allright so about 5 days ago my pc started acting up. When I turn on my wireless adapter, my pc slows down to a crawl, it sometime takes 4 minutes or more to start a program if it starts at all. Sometimes it just blue screens and gives me an inpage kernel error message. When I reboot also it will take 10 minutes or more to start all the programs if wireless adapter is turned on but has no problems when i turn off the adapter and reboot. after rebooting though when i do try to turn it back on it slows down again. I tried to run GMER but im on a 64 bit system and it only gives me three options services, registry and files. that scan didnt produce anything. This whole thing may be a hardware issue but It may also be a virus. Hi. I'm new here, as you can see from my post count

I'm having a few issues, which I'll get to in a moment, but first some background info. Sorry I can't be more specific about version numbers and error messages, but I'm on my laptop at the moment. I can get to the desktop probably tomorrow or late LATE tonight.

Had a desktop
(WinXP MCE 2005,
Asus K8N,
Athlon 64 3400+ (I think),
2048MB generic budget ram,
HIS Radeon X1600 256Mb,
Hauppauge WinTV PVR-150,
Creative Labs X-Fi Fatal1ty
Ultra 550W X-connect PSU
Seagate Barracuda 500Gb HDD
All drivers newest versions to the best of my knowledge.

I took the old HDD (and some other parts, as mentioned below) and popped it in my upgraded rig:
Athlon 64 X2 4600+
2048MB Corsair XMS2 TwinX
Same graphics card, optical drives, soundcard, PSU and TV Card.

Before the transfer I uninstalled any MOBO-specific drivers I could find.

At first, the new rig booted and ran fine, except the TV-card was not recognised. So I go get the drivers from Hauppauge.com, blue screen on install. I get them installed finally, and the system bluescreens on boot. Try a system restore from safe mode, etc. Eventually get the thing to load into windows again. Go through uninstalling all the peripherals and using GURU3d Driver sweeper, then re-installing drivers and parts one-by-one. The thing runs great now EXCEPT:

1. Windows Taskmanager shows I only have one core. "One Graph per CPU" is the only option, sel... Read more

After the 2nd or 3rd Windows Update I get sent to the System Restore menu because Windows could not start. I've done a full system restore 4 times now. After the 3rd time I brought it back to the store and, after 2 weeks, they said it was a software (OS) problem. Even though I got the extended warranty they want $80 to reinstall the OS. The problem is this is a refurb. 7 was pre-installed and didn't come with a disk. MS says I have to go to the HP to get a copy of 7, but I can't find it here. Can I d/l Windows 7 (64 bit) here to reinstall on this machine? Personally, I think the store is FOS and I'll probably be returning it. But, I need to try that before I do. I'm not designing a space ship to Mars or trying to kill everyone on the planet in a MMORP. It's for my wife to play on Pogo and do some banking. Her old PC is on Vista and won't run IE11. Help?!?

A:Told it was a software issue

I suggest that you perform a system recovery one more time. This time change the Windows 7 update settings to check for updates but let me choose whether or not to install them.  https://youtu.be/u-gTSQ5COpg  You can download the all at once convenience update that was provided by Microsoft and very likely avoid the problem that is causing the no-start scenario. See the tutorial at the following URL. http://www.howtogeek.com/255435/how-to-update-windows-7-all-at-once-with-microsofts-convenience-roll...

Hi...I'm trying to install a tutorial CD I got from my insurance school. I successfully installed the same software on my desktop but it won't install on my lap top. Both of my puters are XP. The error message I'm getting is:

"Setup cannot install system files or update shared files if they are in use. Before proceeding, we recommend that you close any applications you
may be running.

I tried installing this puppy in safe mode and got the same error.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Dell optiplex 740
Windows 7 32bit (originally had vista on the machine)
2Gb memory
80gb hdd
I can probably provide more details if necessary.
I'm not sure which.  My wife works helping an elderly gentleman in his house and he has not been able to use his computer for a little while now so they asked me to look at it.  I hate when things don't go smoothly....  that's life though right...
The issue to begin with was that it would not finish starting up before shutting down.  One issue they had that was preventing me from even investigating the issues was that the guy's son set up passwords for his account and for an admin account so that nothing would get installed without permission accidentally.  This guy is in his 90's and has a LOT of trouble seeing.  He really only uses the computer for solitaire but he's missing that right now.
I finally got the son to track down what the admin password might be and he suggested two... fortunately one was right.  I was afraid I was going to have to do a fresh install(which I still could do I suppose...)
I'm in the process of TRYING to figure some things out with it and not getting very far so far.  The other day while at his house I managed to get into safe mode... and even into windows in the admin account for a while before it just shut down.  This has me leaning towards a hardware issue...  but I don't know.  These things can take SO long sometimes I told him I... The optiplex 740 is supposed to have a set of diagnostic lights of the front panel. See the manual here. Page 52 shows how to access Dell Diagnostics for a set of tests. The power light also changes color to indicate a problem. Edit: Now that Windows 7 is on the computer, the Diagnostic Partition may be gone.
Edit Edit: You can download the Dell Diagnostics here.
