how do I get Windows Defender working after I uninstall McAfee?

Q: how do I get Windows Defender working after I uninstall McAfee?

What would suggest I do, McAfee came pre installed on my HP Laptop. My "free" subscription ends in a few days and I noticed that my Windows Defender does NOT work. It is grayed out because of McAfee as I have learned reading other posts on this board.
Other AV programs have this effect on Windows Defender in many cases.
I guess my question is how do I get Windows Defender working after I uninstall McAfee?

Preferred Solution: how do I get Windows Defender working after I uninstall McAfee?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Soon as you remove McAfee, Windows Defender should come back on ....they won't run at same time.

I downloaded an ipchanger called Invisible Ip Map (torrent). Then ran it on my computer. seemed to work fine until I connected to the internet with a different ip (Saudi Arabia). However, other problems occured, windows defender was disabled and I tried reenabling it using windows help guide and an error 1058 popped up. I tried going to update.microsoft.com and a pop up came up and i read about it, googled it and such and used the smitfraudfix.exe to try fixing it. nothing, it ended up screwing up my computer even further where McAfee is missing a whole bunch of things, a few errors popped up that i didn't have a chance to write or printscreen. So, I got a new Laptop for Cristmas, and with it, my mom got me a year of McAfee. After it expires, i'll be getting Hitman Pro. (Right now I use Mbam Premium + McAfee + AdwCleaner + Super Anti-Spyware.) Now, I know a lot of people will yell at me about how McAfee is a resource hog and that I shouldn't use it, and, well, I already know. But, if I have a free year on something, I might as well use it.  Whichever answer this question this awnswer has, I will still use McAfee, for the reason stated above. However, I am just curios, is McAfee or Windows Defender better? Soon it will not matter because I will be using Hitman Pro which will enable Defender again but for now I want to know.
Which has a better detection rate? McAfee or Windows Defender?
Again, I dont care about anything exept detection.
So I guess the question is not "Which is better?" but "Which has a higher detection rate?". Anyway, just answer the question.

There is no universal "one size fits all" solution that works for everyone and there is no single best anti-virus. Every vendor's virus lab and program scanning engine is different. Each has has its own strengths and weaknesses and they often use a mix of technologies to detect and remove malware. In many cases choosing an anti-virus is a matter of personal preference and what works best on a particular system.Choosing an Anti-Virus ProgramThere are several reputable labs which test the effectiveness of major anti-virus programs and security suites to include AV-Comparatives.org, Virus Bulletin Comparative Tests, AV-Test.org, NSS Labs Consumer Anti-Malware Products Group Test Report, etc. These kinds of comparative testing results will vary depending on a variety of factors to include but not limited to who conducted the testing, what they were testing for (type of threats, attack vectors, exploits), what versions of anti-virus software was tested, what type of scanning engine was used, and the ability to clean or repair. There are no universally predefined set of standards or criteria for testing which means each test will yield different results. As such, you need to look for detailed information about how the tests were conducted, the procedures used, and data results. Some of the testing criteria and standards may even be misleading....for some unknown reason...the renowned German test lab AV-TEST has quietly (there was no warning) modified its certification process. I am running McAfee internet security on windows 10. My question is should windows defender be on as well? I don't seem to be able to switch it off, it just comes back on after a while. I don't seem to get a definitive answer anywhere.

A:Windows 10 defender & McAfee

I don't have the answer you are looking for, but my advice is to uninstall McAfee and just use Defender.

When setting up a new computer that comes with McAfee I get the first round of updates, then dump McAfee and make sure Defender is running. In most all cases there is a noticeable increase in the speed of the pc.

I am currently using Windows Defender in both of my home PCs. My ISP (Cablevision aka Optimum Online) now offers the full McAfee AV suite for free.

Any experiences, opinions, or advice will be appreciated!

You can set Windows Defender to run manually as a secondary scanner.

I am aware that users should only have a single anti virus app running on their system.

Every month when I run the automatic updates, the Windows Defender application is installed automatically - it is turned off as McAfee AntiVirus Plus is installed on my laptop and it performs the same tasks as those in Windows Defender.

My question is this - if McAfee does the same thing, why should I have Windows Defender on may laptop???

A:McAfee AntiVirusPlus and Windows Defender

McAfee doesn't have a stellar record in the matter of not interfering with Win 7 systems.

My recommendation: 100% remove McAfee, install Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) link in my sig.

MSE is the one and the only av i use, i install, recommend.

I do not use Anti-spyware or anti-anything. I use MSE and only MSE.

The button to run it is greeyd out.

Is there a way to run a scan with defend?

A:No way to end McAfee and begin Windows defender - screensh

Ensure that "Windows Defender" Service is set to "Automatic" in "Services." Type in Services in your search menu in Start and check.

Also, the reason Windows Defender is not running is because you have McAfee Antivirus running. By having both Antiviruses running will cause system instability. Uninstall McAfee or only use McAfee. I personally use Windows Defender because it outperforms all the other antiviruses and it is simple, uses little resources, and speedy.

Is anyone successfully running McAfee (or another AV) and Windows Defender at the same time?

A:McAfee Total Protection & Windows Defender

If the installation process for an AV app turns off (disables) Windows Defender, the you should not try to run Windows Defender with that particular AV app. There are a few AV apps that leave Windows Defender enabled.

I would suggest uninstalling McAfee Total Protection and using Microsoft Security Essentials or Panda. McAfee does not have a good reputation in these forums.

I recently bought a new computer running windows 8.1 which came with a free trial of McAfee. When the free trial expired I uninstalled McAfee using their commercial uninstall tool, opting for free Windows Defender. When I try to activate Windows Defender I get a message which states "This app has been turned off and isn't monitoring your computer. If you're using another app to check for malicious or unwanted software, use Security and Maintenance to check that app's status."
After a few days of struggling I successfully finally could not find any remnants of Mcafee on the computer, but still get this message whenever I try to activate defender. When I go to the control panel ->system and security -> Action Center and click "Turn on Now" for defender, nothing happens.
I took it to a nearby computer repair store and they said that windows defender was probably not activating because of McAfee, but it also could potentially be a virus acquired during the time my computer has not had a virus protecter.  They offered 100+ to fix the issue.  I am frustrated that my new computer came pre-installed with a virus-like program that I have to pay to get rid of.
I have installed and run scans using Malwarebytes free and Spybot SD free with no results.
Thank you for any help you may be able to provide

When I try to delete this program from the program files and program files(x86) folderes, I get a message that I need permission from TrustedInstaller to make changes.

So I went into the properties and changed the sharing settings, to share with myself of course. I have only been able to give myself permissions in one of the folders. After doing this, it lets me begin deleting. It begins going through several screens informing that it is a shared folder, that deleting it will affect other users...................but it eventually comes back to the message that I need permission to get rid of something on MY OWN computer!

HI guys I would just like to ask if windows defender and firewall are as good as mcafee if so I would uninstall mcafee and turn them on. why pay if they are just as good.

A:Solved: mcafee vs windows defender and windows firewall

If you have Windows 8, as your posting in that forum suggests, then you'd probably be OK. "Windows Defender" is actually the re-branded Microsoft Security Essentials, and that's a full anti-virus.

If you have Windows 7, as your compute specs indicate, then Windows defender is just antispyware. You can get MSE (for free), but don't have it by default.
Pick it up here: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

I'd certainly suggest that MSE, coupled with the firewall, is as good as McAfee.

A:Completely uninstall Defender from Windows 8.1, possible?

Hello Anakunda,

These are all part of the OS and cannot be uninstalled. They can only be turned off instead.

Windows Defender:
It is recommended to have an AV program installed if your not going to use WD to help keep your system safe. When WD is turned off, it doesn't use any resources on your computer other than the bit of hard drive space for it's files.

Windows Defender - Turn On or Off in Windows 8
You can safely set UAC to "Never Notify" to stop most notices. It is not recommended to completely disable UAC in Windows 8 by setting the EnableLUA DWORD to 0 like in the red warning box in the tutorial below though. If you do, it will break all modern apps, and prevent them from being able to be opened.

Hi All

There's something I've been thinking about recently that I would like to ask the forum for your opinions.

I run a lab at home with about 30 Windows Server 2016 servers. They all have Windows Defender installed and I have a Group Policy which enables/configures certain features like Cloud Based Protection. I never ever browse the internet from any of these servers (I use my desktop with my SUA account for internet activity) and I don't share my servers with anyone else.

What I was wondering is:

To free up memory on my cluster and to reduce disk IO I was thinking of uninstalling Windows Defender on Windows Server 2016 using Powershell as follows:

Remove-WindowsFeature Windows-Defender, Windows-Defender-GUI

Now obviously this would mean I would have no AV/malware on these test servers but since I don't browse the internet from any of these machines the risk should be minimal (note I said minimal as I do accept having no AV has its risks/downside which I accept).

I may keep Defender installed on some servers that have ports open from the internet like my mail gateway (anti spam etc) but besides this I can't think of any other reason to keep Defender installed. All servers are behind a pfsense firewall in different VLANs and have tight firewall rules controlling traffic between them.

I don't have any kind of third party AV/anti malware installed. Everything I download gets checked on my desktop before copying to any of my test servers.

1. My computer had some malware issues and some browser redirect issues (probably from before the more recent malware). I ran a full MBAM scan to get rid of Internet Security. I also ensured the .exe and .dll files were no longer present. I also ran a HijackThis scan and did manual removals. So far it looks like Internet Security is gone but I'm still getting redirects, youtube doesn't work (404 not found -ngix), and I can't access/edit/move/do anything to my hosts file. I tried safe boot as well and I still can't edit. I attempted some command line stuff to try to give me access to the file but it doesn't work. Also, read-only and hidden are checked in the properties but it doesn't let me edit those either; I get an access denied error. My lone O1 line from the Hijack log is something with localhost, nothing suspicious. Any idea on how to fix this?

2. Windows Defender doesn't open. It says something like "failed to initialize handle is invalid". It's listed in the Startup tab of msconfig and enabled.

3. Not sure if it's related but my sound has recently stopped working as well. I know it's not the speakers (built into monitors) as I tried brand new ones and they didn't work either. In the mixer, I can see the audio levels fluctuating when watching a youtube video for example, but I don't hear anything. I've toyed around with settings and everything in my audio control panel but still nothing.

Thanks in advance.

A:Access to hosts file disabled + Windows Defender not working + sound not working

If you use a browser other than Internet Explorer, you could try uninstalling it, deleting all files (so in your profile and program files), and then reinstall.

In regards to Windows Defender, it sounds as if your registry is damaged and/or core files for defender. That said, have a look at this: Error message when you try to start Windows Defender on a computer that you recently upgraded to Windows Vista: "Application failed to initialize"

A bit more information in regards to your system specs, setup, etc., would be helpful.

Do you have more than one output port on your computer? If so, try plugging your speakers into that and see if it works.

You might need to recheck your sound/audio settings in Windows, just to check it is outputting to the correct device.

If no success, try uninstalling/reinstalling (or just updating) your soundcard driver.

Mcafee kept on trying to download virus-scan, however the download kept on restarting. My computer is still unprotected, and mcafee will not scan and is giving me the message "Scan failed to start; result= -2147467249" and is advising that I re-install mcafee because "Some components are missing"

Actually Windows Defender isn't really that good, I'd get Spybot Search & Destroy, SuperAntiSpyware and SpywareBlaster. AdAware 2007 is also good but it can conflict with McAfee Anti-Virus.

On boot up McAfee says Trojan Found Defender-EV and cannot clean, delete, or quarantine it. The file name is !Update-3595[1].0000 and the path is C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Setttings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\HV3JT9OE. I have scanned the box with Ad-Aware, Spybot, and used Windows Defender. I am running XP Home SP with pop up blocker enabled. I have cleared cache, deleted history, emptied recycle bin, etc I turned off system restore which deleted the restore point, then rebooted and turned restore back on. What is bizarre is when I manualy try to browse to the content.IE5 folder it is not under Temporary Internet Files. However there is a Content.IE5 folder under Temp. Thanks for any help you may be able to provide!!!

I use the Vista Firewall plus AVG Free 8.0 together with Firefox 3.5 Browser with Adblock. I also carry out a periodic manual scan using AdAware Anniversary Edition free.

Vista comes with Windows Defender, but in the 2 years I have had Vista, whenever I have scanned with it, it always reports 'no unwanted or harmful software detected - your computer is running normally!' Very reassuring or what? Does this mean everything else is doing a really good job or could it mean that Windows Defender is really not much use?

Hi longbelly,
I am always very happy when any of my Security Progs report "no unwanted or harmful software detected etc"
Different people will have different opinions on the use of Defender, AVG & so on.
Suffice to say it is part of my security set up & will remain so.
Just in case you are not familiar with the Defender info, [which reads well] refer link below.
IMHO Defender has a lot of good points. It provides a layer of extra security for your computer. It also works well with AVG.
Let us know what you eventually decide to do about Defender.

I selected Windows Defender in Control Panel. Got a message saying it's turned off. If you are using another program, check the status in action center. I am using Microsoft Security Essentials. Is that the reason Windows Defender won't turn on? I like MSE so it's not critical that I use WD. I'm just curious. Do they conflict with each other? Thanks,

YES. Microsoft Security Essentials turns it off because it has it built in.

While I was on the Internet yesterday Windows Defender popped this message: ?Malware Detected Windows Defender taking action to clean detected malware? and after another window popped saying: ?Detected threads are being cleaned, no further action is required?

After rebooting and back on Internet, the above messages re appeared (messages appear only when I?m on the Internet).

Checking the Defender history I see it found this malware: ?Exploit: SWF/Meadgive?, there are 6

My question: Is the Defender working or not?

My mom needs to uninstall McAfee and I'm 4 hours away and can't help her.

She has a new Dell with XP, and when she goes to Add/Remove programs, all she says she has by McAfee is "McAfee Uninstaller". Without being there to see for myself, I don't want to mess her up by uninstalling the uninstaller program, if that's what she has in the list of programs.

Would someone please give me a blow-by-blow list of instructions to forward to her? Bless her heart, she's 84 years old and knows more about computers than my DH, but this has her stumped! She's going to install Zone Alarm once she gets McAfee off of her machine.

Thanks so much for your help!

A:How to uninstall McAfee??

Hi, Peachykeen

First attempt to remove McAfee throughout the Add/ Remove Programs option in the Control Panel. Then Download and run the McAfee Removal tool

This tool is not compatible with Microsoft Windows 98 or ME.
Download the removal tool from HERE.
Click Save and save the file to any folder on the computer.
Navigate to the folder where the file is saved.
Double-click MCPR.exe.
Click Run. A Command Line window will be displayed, and then close automatically. Wait for a second Command Line window to be displayed.
Note: Do not double-click MCPR.exe again, you may have to wait up to 1 minute for the next window to appear.

After the second window appears, the program will begin the cleanup.
Observe the installation, which could take several minutes. The following message will be displayed in the Command Line window:
The machine must reboot to complete the un-installation. Reboot now? [y.n]
Press Y on the keyboard.
Wait for the computer to restart.
All McAfee products are now removed from your computer.

Hi everyone
I`m doing this for a friend, so I figured I`d better come here so as not to goof up. This computer has Windows 98, and has Mcafee on it, which has not been updated for probably 4 years, how she managed to get away without getting a nasty is beyond me. Well she wants to put another anti-virus on the machine. I was hedging her toward AVG free edition, but now I hear it`s going pay at the end of the year(say it ain`t so joe). Well we will come up with something. My question is, anything special I need to know about removing Mcafee(she has no disk for it). Somewhere in this forum I had read where someone had problems removing it. That`s all I need is to try to remove it, and have something happen unexpectedly on someone elses machine. Like I said the Mcafee hadn`t been updated for at least 4 years, and that kind of makes me a little aprehensive. Just for questions sake, If I decide to not remove it, can I go to msconfig, and uncheck it so it doesn`t startup and cause problems with the new anti-virus? If AVG goes pay, any links out there for a decent free anti-virus thats user friendly. Thanks for your time and any advice lended.

Mike Peters
